In order to address the difficulty of accurate segmentation of froth images of different sizes, a method of froth image segmentation based on highlight correction and parameter adaptation is proposed. First, a machine vision system on a single-cell flotation machine is built to collect froth images. Homomorphic filtering is used to improve the uneven brightness and shadow of the images. Fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering is then utilized to classify similar highlights that belong to the same froth. After Otsu threshold segmentation, a parameter-adaptive morphological operation is used to extract the marker points and edge bands and correct the froth edges in the original image. Finally, the modified image is filtered by morphological reconstruction, and the highlight mark is used as the local minimum point for watershed segmentation. Three sizes of froth images are segmented in comparative experiments. The results show that the proposed method is suitable for the segmentation of froth images of different sizes. The position of the extracted segmentation line is close to reality, with average over-segmentation and under-segmentation rates for froth images of 2.6% and 6.8%, respectively. The froth image segmentation performance is stronger than that of the other methods examined.

This contract includes fixed costs and guaranteed availability. The results have been excellent, and the fleet of trucks performs well. History The Smoky Valley Common Operation is a unique mine. Through a mixture of diligence and foresight, it has become the largest open-pit, heap leaching gold mine in the world. This was no small feat considering the remote area surrounding the mine. Round Mountain is located in north-central Nye County, NV. To the east of the town and mine lies the Central Toquima mountain range. To the west is the Toiyabe mountain range. Between them is the Big Smoky Valley, a flat expanse of sagebrush, salt grass and fine dirt.

The purpose of this paper is to provide general information about the bioaccessibility of metals and specific information about the use of bioaccessibility in risk assessments (human health risk assessments [HHRA] or ecological risk assessments [ERA]) and a list of sites where regulatory agencies have approved the use of bioaccessibility data in risk assessment. The memorandum also cites current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) guidance as well as state specific guidance where applicable. BRIEF HISTORY OF METAL BIOACCESSIBILITY TESTING AND METHODS The bioaccessible fraction of a constituent is that fraction that dissolves or desorbs from its matrix (e.g., soil) in the gastrointestinal tract and is available for absorption (USEPA 2007a; ITRC 2011; ITRC 2017). This is different from the bioavailable fraction, which is the percentage of the amount of an element that an organism is exposed to that is absorbed by that organism during a given time under defined conditions (USEPA 2007a). The bioaccessibility factor is the percentage of a metal that is potentially available for absorption and, therefore, is a conservative estimate of the bioavailable fraction since all that is available for absorption may not ultimately be absorbed into the organism’s system. Currently, there are two main techniques for estimating bioavailability of metals within a medium: in vivo animal studies (time-consuming and often cost-prohibitive), and in vitro tests that simulate human, or animal digestion in a laboratory setting. In vitro and in vivo test methods and protocols have been extensively evaluated by numerous researchers (Ruby et al. 1996; Rodriguez and Basta 1999; Sips et al. 1998; Sips et al. 2001; Molly et al 1993; Oomen et al 2002; Kelley et al. 2002; Oomen et al. 2003; Furman et al. 2006; Drexler and Brattin 2007; Basta et al. 2007; Wragg et al. 2009; Wragg et al. 2011; Chaney et al. 2011; Bradham et al. 2015; Bradham et al. 2018). The most recent scientific literature demonstrates that protocols used to estimate the bioavailability of metals to mammals also predict bioavailability of metals to birds as well (Beyer et al., 2016).

That you are giving the Daniel C. Jackling award to me is a great personal honor. But more significantly, it is a recognition that geostatistics has come of age. And since I am considered by many as belonging to an older generation of geostatisticians, I thought that it would be fitting that I reflect on where geostatistics came from and where it might be going. First, though, let me propose a definition of geostatistics. Etymologically, paraphrasing Webster's definitions of "geo" and "statistics," it is "a branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of masses of numerical data taken from the earth." This definition is most appropriate in the context of mining geostatistics. It includes both classical and spatial statistics. It emphasizes the earth aspect, or the analysis of geologic features. And it should remind the practitioner that geologic input is a critical part of all geostatistical applications. In the 1910s, statistical methods were already used to analyze geological data. However, the origin of geostatistics, as we know it today, is best set in the late 1940s, when H.S. Sichel recognized the lognormal distribution of sample values in the South African gold mines. In 1951, Daniel Krige observed that "it can be expected that the gold values in a whole mine will be subject to a larger relative variation than those in a portion of the mine." In other words, samples taken close to each other are more likely to have similar values than if taken farther apart. This observation is the foundation on which spatial statistics, which characterizes values defined in a multidimensional space, is built. However, the 1950s were marked by studies based on classical, as opposed to spatial, statistics. It was only in the 1960s that the need was recognized to model the similarity between sample values as a function of the distance between samples and that the semivariogram was defined. A theoretical framework was developed by Matheron that supplied an elegant mathematical explanation to the empirical observations made by Krige. Matheron coined the term "kriging" in recognition of Krige's pioneering work on the geostatistical evaluation of mineral deposits. As soon as this theoretical framework was developed, it was possible to bring geostatistics to the academic world. The "Centre de Geostatistiques" was founded in Fontainebleau. Numerous students were trained there, disciples eager not only to improve the theory and develop more sophisticated mathematical tools, but also to spread the new faith throughout the world. Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. Alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include: • orthomagmatic platinum group elements (PGE) ± gold (Au); • porphyry copper-silver-gold (Cu-Ag-Au, ±PGE); • epithermal Au-only, and Au-Ag-base metals; • submarine exhalative Kuroko-, Cyprus-, seamount- and Yellowjacket-type deposits; and • enigmatic deposits akin to Olympic Dam. Coeval epithermal deposits related to porphyry deposits suggest the two types represent separate immiscible fluids evolved in oxidized, CO2-rich alkaline magma chambers. Alkaline rock provinces develop above mantle hot-spots, but crustal structures control the final distribution of magmas and ore fluids. Prospecting guides for alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include the presence of evolved alkaline rocks, pervasive K-metasomatic, redox and carbonatic alteration and low level Au (±Te, etc.) anomalies. Although alkaline igneous rocks crop out in less than 1 % of the area of the North American Cordillera and craton, alkaline rock-related ore deposits have produced nearly 13% of the total United States and Canadian lode gold production. Large (31-t or 1 million-oz) deposits are common (Fig. 1), and additional deposits and reserves are being discovered. New genetic models are evolving, making alkaline rock-related precious metal prospects attractive exploration targets.

The Woodbury L-73 Tunnel involved the design and construction of a 96-inch tunnel driven through 8,080 lf of very difficult ground conditions. Anticipated ground and groundwater conditions consisted of potentially flowing silty sand with cobbles and boulders, mixed face of sand and sandstone and full face of the St. Peter Sandstone. Actual conditions were similar, although the quantities did change from bid quantities. This paper presents the approach used for development of the GBR regarding risk management. The means of arriving at a fair compensation for variances from the baseline values to address the actual encountered tunneling behavior of the soil, boulder count and its effect on production rates are presented.

This paper provides an account of the efforts undertaken to construct the Northeast Interceptor Sewer (NEIS) project, which is a portion of a much larger program in Los Angeles, California to upgrade the city’s wastewater facilities. The project consisted of a number of elements, including both soft ground and rock slurry wall shafts, drilled shafts, soft ground EPBM mining, rock TBM mining, large diameter pipe placement, and underground structure construction. The need to complete the project under strict schedule constraints, in addition to the challenges of underground construction in congested urban areas, necessitated the work be undertaken with the proper balance of state of the art equipment, and thoughtful planning. The paper will detail the means, methods, and equipment used on the project, as well as discuss several of the unforeseen conditions encountered during construction.

Baja Mining is currently constructing the Boleo metallurgical plant in Santa Rosalia, Mexico to recover copper, cobalt, zinc and possibly manganese products from the Boleo ore. The process involves an acid seawater leach of the whole ore followed by solid-liquid separation and washing of the leach residue. Solvent extraction is used to separate copper, cobalt and zinc from solution. Copper and cobalt are recovered as cathode metal products and zinc as a zinc sulphate monohydrate. Manganese may be directly precipitated as manganese carbonate which can be used as a feedstock for manganese metal production. Laboratory testing has continued to refine various aspects of the process including iron removal, cobalt and zinc solvent extraction, cadmium cementation, cobalt electrowinning and manganese metal electrowinning. The results of this testing are reported in this paper.

Despite the recent pullback in metal and mineral prices, and the associated market adjustments, the mining industry is still facing a serious issue with the declining availability of graduate expertise. This is due to a combination of an aging workforce, retirements and retrenchments, coupled with a lack of suitably qualified graduates entering the workforce. The issue has certainly improved since 2004 when the industry picked up the rates of hiring graduate engineers and mining/mineral school enrollments picked up in response. This hiring effort has helped to cover the ?gap? years from about 1985-2000, when industry demand for graduates was particularly poor. However, the recent market pullback is likely to set back this progress, as recruitment and hiring wavers as a result of cost cutting measures and economic uncertainty. A key issue for the mining industry is how to ensure the survival and growth of relevant ?core? degree programs. Such programs include mining, metallurgical, mineral processing and geological engineering. The mining industry needs a healthy, high-level education program to ensure an adequate supply of appropriately qualified graduates for the mining industry. Two-thirds of the professionals entering the minerals industry who graduated within the past 40 years graduated prior to 1985. Since 1985, we have been living off the legacy of graduation classes from the mid-1970s and early 1980s. It is estimated that we have been producing graduates at approximately 40 to 50 percent of the sustaining rate since about 1985. Further growth in the domestic industry would increase graduate requirements significantly, and the export of U.S.-graduates to other parts of the world (as is currently occurring) also impacts the total graduate requirements.

INTRODUCTION Many excellent papers have been written and presented regarding agricultural lime and the subject has been covered extensively in books concerning soil science, fertilizing, limestone, etc. We felt challenged to construct a paper that wouldn’t merely be a repetition of past presentations. Therefore, we chose to begin with factors having the most impact on plant growth realizing that the audience is likely to be relatively unfamiliar with this subject. So, we decided to dig deep into the roots of soil and plant growth science in order to better understand the significant role of limestone in this important area. The soil with the higher plants growing upon it forms an open and dynamic ecosystem in which there is flux of energy and material (heat, light, water, nutrients, mineral and organic matter, organisms). Plants root in the soil and then take up oxygen for root respiration, yielding energy for nutrient uptake, water for turgescence and transpiration and use in photosynthesis and the mineral nutrients needed for the synthesis of organic matter. Above the ground the plant takes in light energy and heat using them in photosynthesis to assimilate atmospheric CO2. Photosynthesis is the basic life process of creation. However, we will look at the root room where soil, water, air, and heat economy and the supply of nutrients determine soil fertility and the important role lime plays here. Location is the primary point to be considered when discussing agriculture (climate and soil); secondly, the dynamic and mobility of the minerals (plant nutrients) in the soil; and thirdly the conversion of organic substances into humus. And then there is a great deal of water involved in the growing process. In order to produce 1 kg of dry plant substance, 300 to 800 kg of water must be pumped through the plant and is then lost by transpiration. Cereals, vegetables, and sugar beets consume between 400 to 500 kg of water during the growing process and long-growing crops, such as alfalfa and clover, can consume 600 to 800 kg of water per kg of finished product. Without water, a plant cannot grow. (Reference 1)

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

Passive-treatment systems that mitigate acid-rock drainage (ARD) from coal mines have operating since the mid-1980s. Large systems at metal mines are being contemplated. A 95L/sec (1500-gpm) capacity system is planned this year at an underground lead mine in Missouri. Mine, process and environmental managers need to understand how and why passive-treatment systems work. They must understand what operational limitations to expect, as well as the economics of construction and operation compared to the alternatives, like lime precipitation. Wetlands have been recognized as nature's method of improving water quality. Contaminant reductions can occur through the precipitation of metal hydroxides, sulfides and carbonates and pH adjustments. Local conditions, oxidation state and water and soil chemistries dictate whether these natural reactions will occur under oxidizing (aerobic) or reducing (anaerobic) conditions.

D.A. Dahlstrom In the paper, a comparison was made between flowsheets using the screen bowl centrifuge and disc filters, respectively, as the primary dewatering device. The authors very effectively show that by raising feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced through reduced viscosity of the water. When a final coal moisture of 10% is required, the net effect of heating the feed is a reduction in thermal requirements because of the lower evaporated load on the dryer. The flowsheet comparison on this, however, was not completely correct. Disc filters do not generally utilize enhanced mechanical dewatering through increased temperature. Horizontal belt filters, through the optimal use of steam heating of the filter cake, have shown significant cost reductions over disc filters where steam is not used. In addition, the authors forgot to mention that there is a certain fraction of the feed that is so fine that it cannot be recovered by the centrifuge economically. That is the function of the filtration device shown in Fig. 4. In subbituminous pipeline coals, this fraction represents more than 10% of the feed. Even after flocculation and belt pressing, the moisture content in the fine fraction is 30%-40. Recent tests on a subbituminous pipeline coal slurry, compared an Eimco-Extractor horizontal belt filter with the screen bowl centrifuge flowsheet shown in Fig. 4. Mechanical dewatering was enhanced through the use of a steam dry zone after the initial dewatering zone. Vacuum pump horsepower was reduced by more than 50% through the use of condensors, and heat recovery was utilized to minimize thermal costs. Thermal drying to 10% moisture by weight was required in both flowsheets. The 0.5 wt% fines in the filtrate were flocculated and recycled to the filter, thus eliminating the belt press and solids mixers. When the three major operating costs (which normally account for 50%-75% of the coal operating costs) of steam, electricity, and flocculants at current prices were calculated, the flowsheets utilizing the Eimco-Extractor had cost savings vs the centrifuge flowsheet of 89¢/t (81o; per st) of surface dry coal. This advantage increases with increasing thermal and electricity prices. I congratulate the authors for the strides made with the screen bowl centrifuge. However, filtration flowsheets continue to be improved and their simplicity and low thermal and electrical requirements should not be so quickly dismissed. ? Reply by N.D. Policow From a technical standpoint, a number of extensive test programs have demonstrated that by raising the feed temperature, mechanical dewatering is enhanced whether it be centrifuges or filters performing the separation. Economic constraints usually become the over-riding issue. If an inexpensive source of thermal energy is available, i.e., waste steam, etc., the approach becomes commercially acceptable. For the specific case of coal slurry pipelines, since the dewatering plants will be located close to power generation stations, the preheating approach becomes especially attractive. The cost comparison shown in Fig. 7, which was prepared by a major West Coast engineering firm, contrasted screen bowl centrifuges and disc filters. In both alternatives, a thermal dryer was specified to produce a contract moisture of the final product. Sizing of the thermal dryer on the screen bowl alternative was substantially smaller than that of the filter, since the screen bowl was credited with a four to six percentage point decrease in product moisture compared to the disc. This comparison was made at ambient temperatures and reflected solely the mechanical dewatering capabilities of the two devices. No preheating of the feed was included in this particular comparison. Early generation screen bowl centrifuges operated under the principle of maximum bulk tonnage throughput. Second and third generation machines have followed the trends dictated by the coal industry calling for higher one-pass recoveries than previously demanded. The current generation of high-speed, long-bowl centrifuges permit recoveries of ultrafine solids directly comparable to commercial filter operation. On typical coal preparation plant feeds with nominal 600 E. an X 0 (28 mesh X 0) clean coal, recovery levels in excess of 99% are now obtained. The material that does escape the centrifuge and reports to the main effluent is typically -10 µm, high ash material. We have documented substantial beneficiation effects in screen bowl centrifuge performance with the cake product containing lower ash levels than the feed. On the referenced pipeline, coal tests performed on Western subbituminous coal, we found that the percentage of -10 µm material in the feed was six to eight times greater than normally encountered on eastern Appalachian seams. Our 45-t/h (50-stph) production centrifuge was never set up to maximize recovery. It was used as part of the two-stage dewatering circuit that had been chosen by designers of the proposed pipeline. Recoveries up to 95% were recorded. With field adjustments, that performance could most certainly have been improved. In contrast, manufacturers of the horizontal belt filter provided a small pilot-scale unit that operated on a side stream at the test facility. Numerous combinations of chemical additions were evaluated to determine those that had the best impact on filter performance. Whereas the screen bowl centrifuges operated without chemical addition, producing a dry, fluffy cake, the belt filter required two stages of chemical addition to attain satisfactory performance and high recovery levels. This paper concerns the optimum arrangement of the buoyancy module, which is used for stable dynamic motion and structure stability of the marine flexible riser. The main method of this study is simulation-based design using Genetic Algorithm (G.A) for optimum design and Multi-body dynamic for simulation. The marine riser connects the vessel and the seabed-tracked vehicle. The motion of the riser affects the motion of the vessel and the vehicle. In this study, a marine riser of the deep-seabed integrated mining system (Figure 1) is used. This riser has a strong effect on efficient transfer of minerals. So, the buoyancy module must be equipped to supplement problems of the structure stability and the dynamic motion. Positions and quantities of the equipping buoyancy modules are determined by the at sea experiment (Figure 2). But this method is not easy because the actual sea experiment is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous (Figure 3). Thus, the position and quantity must be determined by simulation-based design. The dynamic analysis models of the riser and the buoyancy module were built in the commercial software DAFUL. In the marine environment, factors affecting behavior are current, drag force, etc.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future: Imagination, Innovation and Technology.” The meeting consisted of plenary and technical sessions and a special General Manager’s Session. The technical paper presentations included concurrent mining and mineral processing sessions. In the General Manager’s Session, representatives from the region’s taconite operations presented the current status, concerns and future plans for each of their operations.

Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

High-fidelity, immersive training is known for its learning and logistical benefits. While other industries have used virtual reality (VR) for decades, the same uptake has not been seen in mining. NIOSH recently developed an adaptable, scalable VR training platform, VR Mine Rescue Training (VR-MRT), which has attracted significant industry interest. NIOSH is using VR-MRT to understand the barriers to adoption and implementation of VR. As a part of a larger effort to assess the effectiveness and implementation of VR-MRT, researchers have conducted pre-implementation interviews. In this paper, the authors use feedback from individuals at various implementation levels to assess the acceptability and appropriateness of VR-MRT and identify potential implementation barriers for VR more generally. Researchers also describe ongoing efforts to overcome these barriers as NIOSH works to position VR-MRT as a supplemental resource more generally for mine safety training.
