This paper documents a probabilistic resource modeling workflow for the Round Mountain epithermal gold deposit. The set of categorical and continuous variable simulated realizations provides a model of variability and uncertainty given the current orebody knowledge. These realizations can be used to quantify and understand expected deviations in reconciliation during mining and provide a more accurate measure of expected gold than an estimated model. Gold mineralization at Round Mountain is primarily contained within tertiary tuff units, which dip gently to the west and thicken towards the southern part of the orebody. Domain boundaries are modeled as combinations of lithology and alteration; alteration domains are constrained to be within the tuffs. Large-scale geologic uncertainty is strongly influenced by parameter uncertainty, particularly the input histogram. The spatial bootstrap characterizes prior global uncertainty in the input histogram for categorical and continuous variables. Categorical models are generated using hierarchical truncated pluri-Gaussian (HTPG) simulation. Continuous variable simulation is carried out within the simulated domain boundaries using trend models to account for non-stationarity.

As the 2017 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2017 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 342. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2017 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a special review article on Heap Leach Modeling, and articles from two Special Issues on Rare Earths. The 2017 Transactions consists of a total of 54 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2017 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 69) and all 24 papers published in 2017 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 34). Additionally, this volume contains 9 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our Publications staff. As the 2017 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

As a by-product of the steelmaking industry rich in iron and zinc, electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) landfill disposal is restricted in many countries due to the metal lixiviation risks. Several approaches have been examined to recycle or reuse EAFD. Hydrometallurgical methods mainly include the preparation of pregnant acid leached solution (PLS) using inorganic acids followed by selective metal recovery using different methods. We herein proposed a hydrometallurgical process initiated by acid leaching and finalized by thermal treatment to produce nano-ZnO from EAFD. At the condition of this study, only 67% of zinc was leached by sulfuric acid from EAFD into PLS while 98% of surplus leached iron was removed through precipitation by sodium hydroxide. Additional purification of iron removed PLS was accomplished using di-2 ethylhexyl phosphoric acid to extract Zn+2. The addition of ammonium hydroxide to purified PLS provided (Zn(OH)2)3(ZnSO4)(H2O)5 as the final precursor for nano-ZnO that ultimately transformed to nano-ZnO (60 ± 6 nm particle size) at 850 °C. The achieved results were scrutinized through various tests and analyses including TEM, XRD, SEM, EDS, FTIR, and TGA.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. Understanding the energy-size reduction relationship is vital to grinding process; therefore, this paper aims to show the energy-size reduction of magnetite-calcite binary mixture in a laboratory wet conical ball mill. Single magnetite, single calcite, and blended magnetite-calcite mixture at three weight ratios in four particle sizes were ground in a laboratory wet conical ball mill at four grinding time periods. The results showed that the particle size distribution of both fine particles and coarse particles of single and mixture ground product fitted well with the PSD computed by Rosin–Rammler-Benne function. The larger mass percentage of calcite is, the higher t10 of binary mixture ground product is. On the contrary, t10 in the mixture decreases as the percentage of magnetite in the mixture increases. The different breakage behaviors in blended samples are due to the hardness and particle size. The results of calculated ratio of energy absorption factor showed that the calcite consumed more energy in the breakage process of binary mixture than ground alone. The JK size-dependent breakage model based on the t10 method fits all the experiment data, be it generated from pure minerals, mixtures at different weight ratios, or each component separated from the mixture.

The frustration encountered by exploration crews in connection with land acquisition could be graphed to show a correlation with the natural law that everything tends to become more so. Figure I shows a rather common, situation. The combinations of ingredients are almost limitless and the resulting brew is often poisonous to an exploration man. A single step, that of taking a series of deep soil samples is often delayed until some sense can be made from "floating" unpatented claims which are obscure in orientation as well as position, placer claims overlapping lode claims, location posts with empty Prince Albert cans, and claims with no apparent assessment work for ten years. Add to this some patented claims with¬out monuments, a state or federal withdrawal area which may or may not invalidate pre-existing claims, a loosely defined tunnel site, and some ranchers who understandably resent the separation of surface rights from mineral rights. The picture is familiar to exploration men. One approach to such problems is to ignore them until someone voices an objection -- but then an even more chaotic situation is likely to develop. Another practice is to stake new claims to cover all ground that is "open" at first glance and then find out if there are conflicts so that the new claims can be adjusted accordingly.

The brecciated dolostone-hosted (Mississippi Valley-type) and associated shale-hosted stratiform Pb-Zn deposits at McArthur River occur adjacent to a major syndepositional fault, the Emu fault. Base-metal zoning, mineral parageneses, and Pb and stable isotope ratios indicate that both types of deposits formed contemporaneously from metalliferous brines that flowed into the host sediments from the Emu fault. Derivation of brines from underlying evaporitic sediments is suggested. Geochemical evidence indicates that the mechanism of ore formation was sulfate-reduction coupled with oxidation of organic matter. The textural relationships of stratiform sulfide mineralization to diagenetic dolomite concretions, chert blebs, volcanic glass shards, and inter-ore breccia beds, indicate that the reactions proceeded diagenetically within about 100 m of the sediment/water interface.

Southwestern New Mexico is part of a large belt of Late Cretaceous to Eocene copper porphyry deposits found in Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. These deposits are the result of arc magmatism that occurred during the Laramide orogeny. Recently, attention has been brought to other commodities that can be extracted as by- and co-products, many of which are critical minerals. A new compilation of the geochronology of these deposits shows two main pulses of magmatism that produced mineralized deposits and, along with new dates by the author, shines new light on the geologic history of these deposits and the role it plays in critical mineral abundance.

Thanks to strong industry support and longstanding partnerships, the University of Arizona has provided extensive pre-college mining education and outreach for more than a decade. These efforts to promote mining-related degree programs and the wide variety of indemand career opportunities reach thousands of middle and high school students and hundreds of teachers every year. The School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources is constantly looking at ways to help students overcome barriers into degree programs. But competition among degree programs for talent is fierce, and outreach has not made a big enough difference in the number of students pursuing mining engineering degrees. With workforce shortages threatening to undermine the industry, more is needed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 500 new mining engineering jobs each year, and according to a study by Deloitte (2023) nearly 50 percent of skilled engineers will reach retirement age in the next decade. At the same time, the 14 accredited mining or mineral engineering degree programs in the United States are producing fewer than 200 graduates annually (Society of Mining Professors and Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, 2021). To better understand mining’s competitive position, the School of Mining Engineering & Mineral Resources conducted a comprehensive study to determine (1) how prospective college students, parents and educators perceive the industry, related careers and the mining engineering degree, (2) factors affecting students’ choices of degrees and career plans and (3) the roles parents and educators play and how they influence students. This article is the first of two installments to discuss the results. This installment focuses on what students, parents and educators think about mining and where they get those impressions, as well as the role parents and educators play in influencing students’ choices of careers and degrees. The second installment, scheduled for publication in a later issue of Mining Engineering, looks at what students are seeking in their degrees and careers, and how mining compares with other degrees and industries.

"The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown Project builds a 19km LRT corridor that includes a 10km underground portion, between Keele Street and Laird Drive. The West Tunnel Contract (ECLC1-15) includes 6.5km of twin EPB TBM bored tunnels with a 5.75m internal diameter precast concrete segment lining (PCTL), between Keele Street and Yonge Street. This paper summarizes the overall scope of work, the technical challenges faced and innovative solutions developed by the contractor during the TBM move across an existing subway tunnel using state of the art high capacity strandjack gantry crane.1. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) is Canada’s largest urban region, populated with over 6 million people, and is one of the most rapidly growing regions in North America. One forecast estimates that the population of this region will increase to 8.6 million by the year 2031. In September 2008, Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario, launched a 25-year regional transportation plan named “The Big Move” to cope with the expected increase in transportation demand. The Eglinton-Scarborough Crosstown, one of the projects included in “The Big Move”, is a light rail transit (LRT) that will run across Toronto in an east-west direction between Mount Dennis and Kennedy along Eglinton Avenue. In October 2012, the West Tunnel Contract of the Crosstown LRT (ECLC1-15) was awarded to Crosstown Transit Constructors (CTC), a joint venture between Obayashi Canada Ltd., Kenny Construction Company, Kenaidan Contracting Ltd. and Technicore Underground Inc. The project includes approximately 6.2 km long twin bored tunnels, 9 cross passages, 1 emergency exit building, 7 sets of station headwalls, and an intermediate pair of extraction and launch shafts. Each of 6.5 km long twin tunnels are divided by the existing subway station into two drives: the first half from the launch shaft LS-1 (west of Keele Station) to the extraction shaft ES-1 (west of Eglinton West Station), and the second half from the launch shaft LS-2 (east of Eglinton West Station) to Yonge Station, as shown in Figure-1. The TBMs are extracted at ES-1 and moved to LS-2 over the existing Yonge-University Subway Line at Eglinton West Station before resumption of tunneling at LS-2."

An air-pulsated jig has been widely adopted as a main coal washer. It may be mainly because of its many technical and economic features such as large capacity, low running cost, long life, etc. However, the recent increasing demand of fuel coal requires a higher productivity and efficiency of the air-pulsated jig. To fill this requirement theoretical and experimental investigations have been conducted on model and practical jigs in Japan. This paper generalizes the results of these investigations. In jig operation it is essentially of the most importance to create efficiently the pulsation of the water best suited for coal washing. The optimum pulsation should be determined by the theory of jigging process, and the method to realize it by that of pulsating mechanism.

This article offers an examination of a retreat mining method conducted at the Pinoura Mine in India from 2010 to 2017. The method is atypical for coal mines of India’s coalfields. The method executes depillaring in a single pass and does not require the formation of galleries and support installation in splits, thus, reducing the cycle time. A variety of observations are discussed throughout this work and emphasis is placed on field measurements and depillaring under weak roof (RMR = 40–45). This paper discusses design techniques, specifically the estimation of the snook (remnant pillar) size, and important practical observations after the fact. The execution of this method was eventually conducted in eleven panels.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. NIOSH has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by 9 decibels. The ?Inquiring Ears Want to Know? fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

The understanding of the influence of the different types of apatite on the performance of mineral processing of igneous phosphate ores is still a challenge due to the difficulty to explain why some types of apatite floats in the froth flotation cell and others do not under the same conditions. Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão mine: predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and less frequently yellow apatite. The chemical composition of these types of apatite was determined by electron microprobe analysis (EPMA) and LA-ICP-MS. Blue and green apatite respond well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite is the one bearing the lowest P2O5 content and the largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest P and Ca grades and lowest substitution level. A negative correlation of the amount of phosphorus with fluorine was observed. Furthermore, impregnation of iron oxide-hydroxides in the yellow apatite was also observed. Therefore, the low flotation behaviour is due to low crystallinity coupled with impregnation onto its surface.

To come to know the cost of your safety program or how much is expended yearly for each employee on safety; to know what your safety costs are per man-hour or per ton-produced; to know what the health, medical and compensation costs are for any given incident are just a few of the important facts and figures that the safety management of a given organization needs to know to operate in the mining industry today.

Continuous thickeners can be sized either from previous experience, continuous pilot-scale test results, or from batch settling tests. Although it is a relatively simple process to size full-scale thickeners when previous experience or pilot-scale operating data are available, batch testing is often the only realistic method for sizing thickeners due to time restrictions, budget limitations and availability of sample material. Many authors have, therefore, suggested means of running batch tests and analyzing the resulting data. Fundamental thickening theory had its beginning with the work o£ Coe and Clevenger(1). In order to determine the size of the thickener settling area, they proposed that a series of batch settling tests be run at various initial concentrations. The solids handling capacity at each concentration can then be determined and the lowest capacity (maximum area requirements) used to size the thickener. Kynch(2) developed a mathematical analysis in which the relationship between solids concentration and settling rate can be obtained from a single batch settling curve. Talmage and Fitch(3), Yoshioka(4)(5) and Dick(6), have enlarged upon these works to give a basis for methods of sizing thickeners.
