"This is a panel discussion on the milling experience with large volume flotation machines in Canada. Over the past ten years, the Canadian milling industry has been characterized by treatment of ever increasing tonnages of lower grade ores. In order to treat these ores efficiently, mineral processors have been employing increasingly larger volume flotation machines. In older established mills, standard flotation cells have been replaced by the larger volume models with very apparent savings in mill floor space as noted in the Opemiska copper mill.We are pleased to hear from four mill operators with extensive experience on large volume flotation machines. They are:1. I. E. Wahn, metallurgist with Falconbridge-Manibridge, who will describe their mill experiences with the Tank cell and the Maxwell cell.2. G. M. Hughes, mill superintendent of Sherritt Gordon-Ruttan, will detail recent experience with the Agitair cell.3. J. R. Maxwell, mill superintendent of Opemiska Copper, will report on their Maxwell cell installation and operation.4. A. H. Winckers, superintendent of Development and Technical Control, Sullivan Mill, will present a paper written by H. J. Chalmers describing Cominco's past experiences with large volume flotation machine installations including Denvers, Wemcos and Maxwells."

"There are two main issues stemming from Vallée’s (2002) comments on Dominy et al. (2001b). First, he raises the importance of quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) during resource estimation programs, and second, he indicates that the resolution and understanding of continuity (grade and geological) issues are paramount in the classification of resources. In particular, continuity is critical at the boundary between the Inferred and Indicated Mineral Resource categories. The original contribution agrees with the importance of these points, and the principal author offers the following discussion and clarification. Further comment is also provided on the reporting of grade uncertainty through grade ranges.It is worth remembering that vein-gold deposits (e.g., shear-zone, lode-gold, mesothermal types etc.), particularly those containing coarse gold particles (e.g., >100 µm), generally show large variations in grade and an erratic grade distribution. In most cases, diamond drilling is a good measure of geological continuity (depending on drill spacing), but a poor measure of grade and its distribution. High-nugget effect deposits rank among the most difficult deposit types in terms of producing an accurate and precise resource estimate, and clearly represent a distinct deposit type."

"Abstract - The Asturian fluorspar district consists of vein and stratiform deposits where mineralization is controlled by a combination of lithological and tectonic factors.It is postulated that these fluorspar deposits have been formed under disequilibrium conditions created during circulation of ascending hydrothermal solutions along faults and other high permeability conduits. Mixing of solutions is inferred from fluid inclusion studies. Cavity filing and replacement processes are very important in localizing the ore deposits and in determining their morphology.Permian volcanic rocks in the area yield a regional positive geochemical anomaly in fluorine implying that Permian vulcanism may be a possible primary source of fluorine.On a regional scale a relationship can be established between some of the ore deposits and important tectonic lineaments. The stratiform deposits preferentially occur within a calcareous-detrital facies located at the margins of basins. These basin margins are related to important synsedimentaryfaults.Fluorite is the only economic mineral in these deposits. Quartz, carbonates, barite and pyrite are comnmon minerals accompanying fluorite. Other minerals that may occasionally be present as minor components are: marcasite, chalcopyrite, fahlore, sphalerite, galena and related supergene minerals."

The paper will outline the methods and test procedures including the evaluation criteria currently used at the Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL), Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, a laboratory approved by the Ontario Minister of Labour for the purpose of testing or examining mine shaft ropes or other hoisting appliances. Also for Canadian mines the paper will suggest proposed criteria to be used at MTL for the evaluation of ropes used in "ultra-deep" single-lift shafts. Most of the methods and test procedures currently used at MTL were adopted during the revision of the CSA Standard G4, Steel Wire Rope for General Purpose and for Mine Hoisting and Mine Haulage to be published most likely in year 2001. In this latest or sixth edition of CSA Standard G4, a new Clause 14 has been added outlining the requirements for in-service destructive testing of steel wire ropes for mine hoisting applications. The existing fifth edition of CSA Standard CAN/CSA -G4-92, which is intended for the manufacturing of new ropes, includes requirements for raw materials and construction features for round strand and flattened strand rope, and locked coil rope in bright and galvanized finish.

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REEs+Y) are being used in the making of hybrid electric cars, catalytic converters, wind power generators, LEDs, hard disc drives, flat panel displays, and portable electronics. Currently China produces more than 95% of REEs+Y, which has made REEs+Y a critical strategic resource. Process Research ORTECH Inc. (PRO) has developed the innovative mixed-chloride (HCl+MgCl2) solvent extraction processes for recovery of REEs+Y from their ores. The HCl leaching system provides the opportunity to regenerate the acid, while the presence of MgCl2 in the lixiviant enhances the activity of the hydrogen ion by orders of magnitude, making the lixiviant very aggressive and resulting in high recoveries of REEs+Y. Solvent extraction steps are used for separation and purification of REEs+Y from other value metals or impurities including iron, zirconium, hafnium, uranium, thorium, niobium, tantalum and titanium. Direct individual separation of REEs+Y in a mixed chloride system allows avoiding the additional process steps of precipitation and dissolution in HCl. The resulting process has a simplified flow sheet that is closed-loop and environmentally friendly.

"This paper deals with the organization of the central office technical areas and the role played during the feasibility studies, construction and operating phases of Les Mines Selbaie.HistoryThe Engineering Department was originally formed as a part of the Exploration Department, to examine the feasibility of advanced exploration prospects being brought to the company. In 1968, with the discovery of the South Bay property in northwestern Ontario, the department became part of a Mining Division and was expanded, so that it could provide more advanced mine feasibility studies, control of construction engineering and procurement and initial mine design. As is generally the case, the mine design function was handled with in-house capability, while plant, mill and const ruction functions used outside consultants.The 1974 discovery of the Selbaie deposits, started a period o f growth in the capabilities o f the department. The complex nature of these deposits, required that skills were added in the mining, metallurgical and plant areas. During the early feasibility study period these skills were provided by the engineering company of the parent group, but when it was realized that production from the deposits was likely, permanent staff was added."

Only the provinces of Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia made more than minor modifications to their tax structures, with both Ontario and Quebec imposing major tax increases. In the past year, the federal budget was also released in the spring. Not so this year: we have that to look forward to in the fall!This month, Tax Notes presents a brief summary of the more significant tax changes introduced at the provinciallevels in the last months.Summary of provincial tax rate changesThe tax changes in this year's provincial budgets were both up and down- but there were far more tax increases than tax cuts.At the corporate tax level, two provinces, New Brunswick and British Columbia, increased their general corporate income tax rate; the former by two percentage points and the latter by one percentage point. Quebec, rather unexpectedly, sharply cut its corporate tax rate on business income, but increased some of its other business taxes at the same time. British Columbia reduced its corporate tax rate on small business income by two percentage points and Saskatchewan by one percentage point."

"This work encompasses co-extrusion of alloy Al4.5Mg at the core and rapidly solidified Al4.5Mg1Ag forming the surface layer. The goal is to produce a multi-material by co-extrusion having a relatively hard surface as compared to a softer core. At the same time, work hardening in both alloys is expected to be significant due to Mg in solid solution. Precipitation hardening at 160°C is studied by applying solution heat treatments at 560°C. The hardness increased from 80 to 130 VH in the surface material after 236 h. Surprisingly, the Al4.5Mg alloy also shows pronounced aging at this temperature, i.e. from 70 to 90 VH. The relatively high solution heat treatment temperature introduces grain growth in the core, but this is insignificant for the RS surface alloy. Blisters forms at the surface and cracks follows large portions of the interface. However, the tensile ductility is significant in all conditions due to very pronounced work hardening, i.e. for the as co-extruded, T6, under- and over-aged. The elongation at fracture ranges between 40–45% and the tensile strengths 240–275 MPa. The tensile properties increase linearly with the thickness of the RS alloy, i.e. following the rule of mixtures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg alloys in 5xxx-series are classified as non-heat treatable wrought alloys (Polmear, StJohn, Nie, & Ma, 2017). The formation of the binary ß-Al8Mg5 does not give a substantial increase in the strength of the alloys (Mondolfo, 1976). When a third element like Ag, Cu or Zn are added, G.P.?zones are formed at low temperatures and intermediate, partial coherent phases are nucleated somewhat higher temperatures and finally a ternary, equilibrium phase is formed (Auld, 1968; Cousland & Tate, 1986; Mondolfo, 1976). Both the formation of G.P.?zones and intermediate phases increase the hardness and strength of the materials. An intermediate, hexagonal T´?phase is formed in Al-5 wt%Mg-1wt%Ag, and finally the equilibrium, cubic phase (Al,Ag)9Mg5 is nucleated (Cousland & Tate, 1986; Mondolfo, 1976)."

"This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1988. The program was developed in response to the terms and conditions of the Water Licence issued to the mine in 1981 by the Northwest Territories Water Board. Echo Bay Mines Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle.The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that the total containment concept would require reevaluation since discharge from the pond would be required within a few years. During the initial years of production, an investigative program was established to determine the most effective means for treating the tailings pond water. This program incorporated both laboratory studies as well as monitoring of the tailings pond contents and environmental conditions as the impoundment area was filling. The program showed that natural degradation phenomena, if properly utilized, are effective in lowering the concentrations of all contaminants to within Licence limits with the exception of arsenic. To ensure compliance with arsenic limits, an iron salt was added to cause arsenic to precipitate from solution in the tailings pond.As a result of our studies, the tailings management system finally implemented at Lupin Mine includes the following components:Tailings pulp retention cells constructed by dyking off one end of the tailings impoundment area.Two tailings ponds in series operated in a sequential decant and fill fashion.An iron salt solution preparation and metering system.A syphon system into which the iron salt solution is injected as the contents of the first pond are decanted into the second pond.A second syphon system for decanting the contents of the second pond to the receiving streamThis paper discusses the findings and conclusions of the waste management investigative program, describes the civil work completed to reach our final operating scenario, describes the sequence of operating the treatment system, reviews performance data, and comments on abandonment and restoration of the tailings impoundment area."

"The paper describes a new method of interpreting the “canister test” data for the quantitative estimation of gas-kinetic parameters of coal bed based on the developed model of gas emission from coal sample placed in a sealed container. The model accounts for grain-size composition of the sample, initial gas content S, as well as coefficients of diffusion D and mass transfer ?. The inverse coefficient problem is formulated to find S, D and ??from the data of pressure measurements in the sealed container. It is shown that the inverse problem is uniquely solvable if the pressure is dropped during the experiment. The method has been tested using the data from an underground coal mine in the Kuznetsk Basin.Based on the poroelastic model of a coal bed and Khristianovich’s concept about origination and evolution of the filtration zone F in the neighborhood of a degassing borehole the authors considered the corresponding direct problem on rock mass geomechanical state. It was offered interpretation method for data on pressure measurements in a plugged degassing borehole allows evaluation of the diffusion coefficient, the horizontal component of natural stress field and parameters of F. The related inverse problem of the mixed type is formulated, and the cost function is constructed. The analysis using synthetic input data has shown that the cost function has a number of local minimums arranged on the same straight line, one of the minimums being the inverse problem solution. INTRODUCTIONPre-mine degassing is an integral part of coal mining. It allows mitigation of induced accidents in mines (coal and gas outbursts, rock bursts) (Guide, 1990; Malyshev & Airuni, 1999; Seidle, 2011) and also furnishes an alternative and ecology-friendly energy source—methane (Rice, 1997; Nambo, 2001). Choosing an optimized pattern of degassing boreholes, as well as estimating degassing time and amount of gas recovered requires data on gas-kinetics indices of coal beds out of which the key parameter is a gas content S. According to the latest guidelines for coal mines in Russia (Ruban et al, 2012), mining is allowed if S in a coal bed section is under 7 kg/m3."

"The interaction between a deformable bubble and a rigid particle in viscous liquids under microgravity conditions is studied by direct numerical simulation via an Arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method. Due to the microgravity, the bubble will stay as a sphere in the fluid without external forces and its deformation is caused by the moving particle. In this study we assume the flow field is axisymmetric and the motion of the gas inside the bubble is neglected. The particle equations and the Navier-Stokes equations for the fluid are solved in a unified finite element framework. The particle obtains an impact velocity by an external force and the impact velocity is varied over a wide range. A ‘critical time scale’ T0 was identified for the interaction process. For successful contacts between particle and bubble, the time scale of their relative motion must be less than T0.INTRODUCTIONThe particle-bubble interaction is an important process in many applied industrial domains such as water treatment, froth flotation and liquid steel purification. It is a complex three phase process in that it embraces many research areas: fluid hydrodynamics, interfacial forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry.Derjaguin and Dukhin(1961) clarified the particle-bubble interaction by introducing three-zone model for small and medium size particles. When the particle is far away from the bubble surface, the hydrodynamic forces are dominant. The particle is driven toward the bubble surface by the particle inertial and gravity. This region is regarded as Zone 1 and the interaction in this zone is a collision subprocess. As the particle gets close to the bubble, it exits a zone where the liquid flow around the bubble surface creates a tangential stream from the upper surface of the bubble toward the rear of the bubble. This is Zone 2 which is called the diffusiophoretic zone. In Zone 3, the particle is very closed to the bubble, surface forces like van der Waals, electrostatic and structural forces are considered. Contrast to Zone 1, Zone3 can be regarded as an attachment subprocess."

STEEPROCK LAKE (Figure 1) lies about two miles north of Atikokan, a village approximately one hundred and forty miles west of Fort William and one hundred miles east of Fort Frances on the Canadian National railway. The possible presence of hematite beneath the waters of Middle arm was inferred by early geological investigators (1890-1903) from the dense hematite float found on the southerly shores of this portion of the lake (1). A dip-needle survey of Middle arm, undertaken in the winter of 1930-31 by J. G. Cross, indicated two areas of high magnetic attraction which Mr. Cross thought might be due to magnetic iron oxides associated with possible hematite bodies. Bedrock could not be reached by the ineffectual hand-drilling so courageously attempted, and further work was abandoned. It was not until 1937 that Mr. Jos. Errington, of Toronto, convinced of the possibilities, determined to support Mr. Cross to the extent of several thousand feet of drilling. During the winter of 1937-38, holes Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 13 were put down (see Figure 1). The first four of these holes demonstrated that the areas of magnetic attraction outlined by the dip-needle survey east of the Narrows and southwest of Elbow point were due to ash rock (2). As a result, Mr. Cross decided to investigate the bordering areas of low magnetic attraction and selected a location near the high ferruginous lime (3) point in the northeast of Middle arm. Dense, hard hematite beneath approximately 350 feet of water and clay was struck in the first hole, and, before the end of the winter's drilling, hematite had been encountered in holes Nos. 6 to 13 along a straight line 700 feet in length (see Figure 1). In the meantime, the Steerola ( 4) Exploration Company had been formed to continue development and already, in the spring of 1938, W. D. Neeland, the Company geologist, had come to the conclusion that the most probable location for possible hematite was at the ash-lime contact. Accordingly, during the summer, drilling was continued off-shore in holes Nos. 15, 25, and 27 (see Figure 2) toward possible hematite bodies inferred by Mr. Neeland.

The Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine was the answer to the flue-dust problem of the copper blast-furnace smelter. Then came concentration by flotation, which threatened to eliminate the blast furnace from the smelting field altogether, and again the sintering process solved the problem. As is well known, the sintering process is dual in its function; it expels sulphur from the charge and it converts a powdery material into nodules or chunks that hold together. The charge is ignited on top just as it passes over the edge of the first suction box, and the oxygen of the air that is drawn downward through the charge breaks up the sulphide and oxidizes about fifty percent of the sulphur. The heat produced by this reaction in the upper stratum of the charge ignites that lying immediately below, and, when the pallett has travelled the full length of the machine, the tire has reached the graces and the fine concentrate has changed its characteristics by being partially fused and has become a more or less solid mass. When the Granby Company was smelting its ore as mined, one small D-L machine was adequate for the treatment of the flue dust, but as soon as the policy of smelting the concentrate was adopted, it became necessary to add two large machines to the sintering plant. The three sintering units, of which two are 42 in. by 396 in. and the other 42 in . by 264 in. in hearth area, have a combined capacity of from 370 to 450 tons (dry) of charge per day. The capacity varies directly as the hearth area. The sinter produced is about 88 per cent of the dry charge, or 325 to 400 tons per day. The sintered fines returned for resintering average between 30 and 35 per cent of the charge, but this is not as great a disadvantage as might appear, since the addition of hot fines improves the burning qualities of the mixture. From 50 to 54 per cent of the sulphur is eliminated in the sintering operation.

"The properties of Base Metal Mining Corporation are in Yoho Park about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Field; British Columbia; on the main line of the Canadian Pacific railway. There are actually two mines; the Monarch on mount Stephen and the Kicking Horse on mount Field; separated by the steep valley of Kicking Horse river. The outcrops of the orebodies range from 4; 900 feet to 5; 300 feet above sea-level. The concentrator is situated below the Monarch mine and is connected to the main portal by an aerial tramway. The ore from the Kicking Horse mine is conveyed by aerial tramway to a storage bin on the main highway and is then trucked to the concentrator.During the construction of the Canadian Pacific railway through Kicking Horse valley, galena float was found at the base of mount Stephen. The East Monarch outcrop was staked in 1894. The outcrop of the West Monarch ore body on the cliff face of mount Stephen was not discovered until 1916. The Kicking Horse orebodies on mount Field were discovered a few years later. In 1912, a 75-ton concentrator was erected, which operated at intervals until 1924. During this period approximately 42,000 tons were mined and milled, largely from the East Monarch orebody. In 1928, the Base Metal Mining Corporation, Limited, was formed to take over the Monarch and Kicking Horse mines. A 300-ton differential flotation concentrator was erected and production started in the autumn of 1929. In a very short time, however, the low price of metals forced the mill to shut down until August 1933. From 1929 to 1935, when the mill again ceased operation, a total of 256,500 dry tons of ore, averaging 1.59 oz. silver per ton, 9.7 per cent lead, and 12.6 per cent zinc, was mined and milled, largely from the West Monarch orebody. After a period of further underground development, the concentrator reopened in 1940 and is still in operation. From 1940 to the end of 1944, 354,363 tons of ore was milled, averaging 5.32 per cent lead and 10.47 per cent zinc."

Originally the focus of Deak Resources Corporation Business Plan was to establish a method for treating small gold and possibly base metal mineral deposits located in the Kirkland Lake - Noranda area of Northeastern Ontario, Northwestern Quebec at a central treatment facility. Since the establishment of this original business plan in 1988 other processing options have availed themselves for handling the base metal ores off site at a central facility which may preclude their processing at Deak.The site selected for the Deak processing plant was Kerr Addison's Virginiatown operation. At the time this property was acquired from the Receiver following Golden Shield Resources' Bankruptcy in 1989 the mill had been processing in the order of 1, 100 SDT per calendar day through one processing module; a module originally designed to process 1,500 SDT/day of a free milling gold ore. This tonnage level however had not been achieved since 1966 when an average throughput of 1481 SDT per calendar day was recorded.In order to realize Deak's overall Business Plan it would be necessary to expand the mills processing capabilities to provide:(1) A 2200 SOT per day circuit capable of processing a free milling, medium work index gold ore;(2) a 1 ,000 SDT per day flotation and/or cyanidation circuit capable of processing refractory gold bearing materials containing refractory minerals (i.e. copper) that should be removed prior to cyanidation; and possibly(3) a 1200 to 1500 SDT/day base metal circuit capable of processing the broad range of Deaks' Base Metal Property ores. If this circuit were introduced it would be completed in two tonnage phases.Further, it was recognized when operations resumed under Deak in 1990 that the existing tailings dam was suitable for, and had sufficient capacity for additional gold tailings with necessary physical modifications and changes in disposal techniques (including the construction of containment storage cells) that would allow storage for an additional 3.4 million tons of gold ore tailings approximately 1.0 million of which has been deposited since 1990. The focus of Deak's long term tailings disposal strategy is to acquire the Barber Lake Basin which is currently adjoined to our main tailings system which will provide an additional 10 million tons of storage capacity.

"This paper will examine the role of debt and equity in project financing and will illustrate the impact on the return to the project sponsor of each type. Conventional debt sources will be examined, as will product purchaser advances, foreign export-import bank loans and lease financing. The paper will review guarantees, charges against the project, dividend restrictions and other commitments. It will also discuss various features of sales contracts and the degree to which they can assist in securing financing. IntroductionThe cost of bringing new mining projects on stream is escalating significantly more rapidly than general rates of inflation. Reasons for this include the higher costs of safeguarding the environment and ensuring the health and safety of workers. The need to develop properties in more remote areas is also a significant factor. These higher costs have not been matched by increases in metal prices, making the task of financing these projects ever more difficult. At the same time, the imagination of borrowers and lenders seems boundless, and innovative schemes for financing projects are constantly being unveiled.It is probably safe to say that no two projects have ever been financed in precisely the same way and the number of financing options for any project is limited only by the imagination of the sponsors themselves. The objectives of the project sponsor represent the most important factor in determining the scope of possible financial arrangements. For example, the sponsor may wish to maximize over-all company leverage by isolating each of its projects in separate companies. In so doing, it hopes to facilitate more ventures than would otherwise be the case. These objectives point toward true project financing. Additional objectives may be to develop a number of its properties by joint venture and to reduce the amount of debt on the sponsor's balance sheet. Those sponsors whose objectives include minimizing over-all financing costs will wish to increase the number of financial options and, as a result, will not be so concerned with effecting true project financing. This approach may also provide ""greater certainty that tax benefits are utilized quickly."

Ferteco Mineracao, belonging to the CVRD group, is one of the several iron ore mines in the south east of Brazil. Some of these mines have pit walls of over 350-m height and operations under difficult geo-technical conditions are steadily increasing. In order to mine the 15 million tonnes of high grade hematitic ore remaining in the Fabrica pit, Ferteco had to deal with the following restrictions: Warrant power to its concentrator and pellet plant, relocate the load-out rail road loop, stabilise a poor phillyte slope, relocate a creek on a bench, lower the water table and mine at maximum angles at a slope with phillyte and loose itabirites directly under the rail road loop. Considering these aspects, 3 stages of operations were designed, considering a safe operation, but with the lowest possible security factors at the last mining stage, before the pit would be filled in again with tailings. Stage one above the rail road loop and below the high tension power mast, where the poor phillyte slope was secured by a flexible retaining wall, using old rails and anchors up to 27 meters (80ft) with a working pressure of up till 30 tonnes and stage two with different slope angles, and deep wells, high wall blasting perpendicular to the highwall with relief holes and rerouting the creek in steel half culvert and stage three, the filling in with tailings and recuperation of the deep well pumps. Following studies and analysis were made: Geotechnical and geological studies of all rock formations including rock strength test, a hydrological study to define the lowering of the ground water level, slope stability analysis for every bench and all possible combination of benches, definition of blasting parameters close to the pit slope, a monitoring plan, including topographical movements, vibrations due to blasting, piezometers and pressure cells as well as a plan how to fill up the pit again with tailings in combination with the rising of the ground water level. The conducting of risk reviews is an essential activity in ensuring safe operating conditions, both during project design phases and for existing facilities. The following paper presents a structured approach to the conducting of risk reviews for existing operations, including descriptions of supporting documentation and guidelines for on-site review activities. The conducting of regular site risk reviews and safety audits is crucial in ensuring the continued safe operation of existing facilities, particularly in the copper industry where numerous processes and unit operations can present catastrophic risks, both in terms of loss of life and financial liability. The structured approach presented aims to provide a logical and comprehensive analysis of risks to align safety-related facilities and procedures with current industry best practice and ensure consistency across multiple client operations. INTRODUCTION The production of copper, whether by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process routes, carries significant inherent safety risks. Production volumes are relatively large, often requiring complex processing routes, multiple production trains and a variety of supporting ancillary facilities. Furthermore, considering the relatively large size of ore reserves, copper production plants can have operational lives well beyond the typical design duration of 20 years. In this context, the conducting of regular risk reviews is essential in ensuring safe operating conditions and aligning facilities with current industry best practices. Risk reviews and safety audits can take various forms and have various areas of focus. The methodologies and approaches described below relate specifically to catastrophic risks, defined broadly as risks that carry the potential for multiple fatalities and significant financial losses. Focus is given to existing facilities and does not consider the risk-related activities such as hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies conducted during plant design. The structured approach presented aims to provide a guide for effective site- based audits and a logical analysis of risks identified. RISK CLASSIFICATION Table 1 provides a typical summary of the classification of risk types and the associated consequence categories and descriptions. It illustrates the descriptions of a catastrophic risk in terms of the broad categories of Health & Safety, Environment, Financial, Image & Reputation and Legal & Compliance. In terms of the Financial category, numeric costs ranges are often prescribed depending on the financial characteristics of the specific operation and the associated parent company.

Diamond valuation is more akin to industrial minerals valuation in that process recovery is important at the ""assay stage"", the impact on price of new goods arriving on the market must be evaluated, and product quality must be acceptable to potential buyers."

The Toyo Smelter and Refinery, owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) is located in the coastal zone of Saijo City and Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The refinery has been producing copper, sulfuric acid, and precious metals such as gold, silver, and PGMs. Previously, the process of precious metals recovery was a combination of pyrometallurgy and an electro-refining process with the conventional cupellation for around 400 years. However, this process had some major problems such as non-efficient recovery of valuable metals, high environmental risk by pyrometallurgy, high cost for maintenance of equipment and so on. In order to solve these problems, a thorough hydrometallurgical process for precious metals refining using chlorine leaching technology was originated and developed by Sumitomo and thereafter commercialized in 2004 at Toyo Copper Smelter and Refinery. This new process enabled shorter-term recovery of gold and manpower saving, and occupational safety and working conditions have also been improved. Superiority over the existing hydrometallurgical processes was also confirmed, for example by the achievement of 99.99% pure silver production without an electro-refining process. This paper summarizes the hydrometallurgical technologies for precious metals recovery such as chlorine leaching of copper anode slime for silver recovery, solvent extraction (SX) for gold recovery, and ion exchange (IX) for PGMs recovery. It also presents a unique silver purification process. INTRODUCTION Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (SMM) produces copper, precious metals and rare metals as by-products at the Toyo Copper Smelter and Refinery, and nickel and cobalt at the Niihama Nickel Refinery. Precious metals contained in nickel ore are also separated and refined at the Toyo Refinery after concentration. SMM has been refining precious metals using the pyrometallurgical method. In recent years, we have revamped the separation and refining process of precious metals dramatically by making use of advanced hydrometallurgical and engineering technology developed in the company. In this paper, we introduce the history of development and techniques of this process, and also introduce in detail the technologies of gold refining, PGMs recovery, selenium recovery, and silver refining which have been particularly difficult to achieve.
