The calculated temperature history of a single particle of MgCl2 hydrates when it came in contact with fused salt electrolyte at 650 °C was determined using the measured heat transfer coefficient for the molten salt bath at 650 °C. The calculations revealed that the entire interior of the particle reached the temperature required for the formation of MgOHCI from hydrated MgCl2 in less than 2 seconds. This was much less than the time required for dissolution of the prills as observed in experiments. It is very likely that the formation of MgOHCI during prill dehydration and dissolution is a result of hydrolysis in the interior of the prills.

The Drumbo Mine is located near Highway 401 between Woodstock and Kitchener in southwest Ontario. The tabular flat-lying gypsum bed is between 1.5 to 2.4 m thick and is situated near the base of the Salina Formation, about 116 m below surface. The mine is owned and operated by Westroc Industries Limited. The 3.8 m diameter shaft was drilled using a Hughes CSD 820 drilling rig and a liner sinking technique new to the North American continent. The shaft was completed in the fall of 1977, and remaining facilities were finished in the fall of 1978. Gypsum production started in December 1978, employing the conventional room-and-pillar method of mining.

The power required to operate a ventilation system can be 25% to 50% of the total energy requirements of a mine. In an effort to reduce energy consumption, initiatives are being introduced at Vale Inco to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems with the objective of decreasing energy usage. One energy conservation measure being introduced is the use of variable frequency drive (VFD) technology for fan motor control. Advancement in technology is making VFD applications more of a standard in industry. The benefits include improved operating performance and system control, reduction in current peak demand, and optimized power usage. This paper describes the application of VFDs for main and auxiliary mine fans; and associated potential energy savings.

In 2002 Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB released the new RCS technology for all of its drill rig types. RCS opened the way for a new generation of computerized drill rigs based on modern, standard PC-computer technology. Drilling accuracy, information logging and reduction in manpower in some types and serviceability, have all taken a quantum leap forward when compared with previous generations of drill rigs. The RCS (Rig Control System) is modularised and distributed is accomplished by means of CAN-bus technology. This technology, which is well proven in automobile applications, forms the communication backbone of the rig. The modularity facilitates almost unlimited possibilities for the expansion and adaptation of drill rig functions.

?It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.? Charles Darwin. Canada?s mining and exploration companies have evolved over the past century from essentially a pick-and-shovel industry to a high-tech industrial sector. This evolution has occurred in fits and starts, and has been driven by the shifting environment of economic, technical and social opportunities and pressures in Canada. As labour costs have gone up, and labour availability has gone down, the industry has evolved more efficient processes. As mineral prices have increased or fallen, the industry has evolved either by expanding or shrinking production, or by changing processes to adapt to the newly prevailing conditions. As stringent environmental protection legislation has been implemented, the industry has adapted accordingly, and has substantially changed its mindset to incorporate sustainability into its way of doing business. These changes have occurred over a number of decades, and have usually occurred as the industry?s reluctant response to pressures it couldn?t evade. This model mirrors the classical paradigm of natural selection where evolution is driven by pressures external to the organism (or organization) ? change occurs to the degree necessary for survival and prosperity, but generally no further. In recent years a new paradigm has started to come into play in Canadian mining and exploration. Rather than only a reactive response to the external economic, social and technical factors, groups within the mining community are becoming proactive in developing strategies for future adaptive change. Instead of each against the other, they are developing more sophisticated paradigms where they can both compete against (such as in marketing) and cooperate with (such as for tech development) their fellow organizations. Most importantly, they are seeing individual and national advantage in a collaborative Canadian approach to address the advantages of overseas competitors who often have lower labour costs, lesser environmental standards, or more accessible markets and transportation. This has translated into large-scale mining community support for the Canada Mining Innovation Council, and its programs in exploration, mining, processing, HR development, energy and environmental stewardship. This new paradigm is adaptive to the current environment but is substantially different from the older way of doing business in two major ways ? it is based on a collaborative approach to competitive advantage, and it is highly proactive rather than reactive. All the programs have their priorities determined principally by the mining and exploration companies, whose first obligation is to determine the long-term research priorities of the industry as a whole, rather than for their individual companies. Only after industry consensus on priorities does the research community become engaged in the implementation of specific projects to address those identified priorities. A goal of the program is to effectively create a virtual mining research laboratory, by engaging all the major research centres in the country. This approach is being actively adopted by much of the Canadian mining community, and argues well for the adaptability and long-term survival of mining in Canada.

"Recently, the arsenic grade in copper ores has been increasing year by year. Arsenic bearing minerals (enargite (Cu3AsS4) and tennantite (Cu12As4S13)) coexist with typical copper minerals such as chalcopyrite (CuFeS2). The removal of arsenic from copper ores that contain relatively high arsenic content is essential due to its adverse impact on the environment and the resulting economic consequences. In this study, arsenic removal and dissolution behaviour of Cu and As from enargite (Cu3AsS4) were investigated using ferric sulphate (Fe2(SO4)3) solutions containing sodium chloride under high pressure oxidation conditions. The effects of numerous parameters including the concentration of Fe2(SO4)3 and NaCl, temperature, total pressure, leaching time and particle size were studied while other variables such as pulp density and stirring speed were fixed at 100 g/L and 750 rpm. The results showed that more than 60% of the copper was dissolved in a 0.1 M ferric sulphate solution under the high pressure oxidative conditions, whereas the leaching rate of arsenic was less than 20%. SEM observation revealed that elemental sulphur was deposited on the surface of enargite forming a passivation layer and the residue was agglomerated. Those phenomena may cause a decrease in the copper leaching rate. It was found that more than 80% of copper was dissolved in the ferric sulphate solution in the presence of 0.34 M sodium chloride under the conditions optimized, whereas the dissolution of arsenic in the mixture did not exceed 2%. XRD analysis of the solid residues from the leaching experiments used ferric sulphate and mixtures of ferric sulphate and sodium chloride showed arsenic to be present as scorodite (FeAsO4).INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been an increase of the arsenic (As) content of copper ores due to the gradual depletion of high grade copper ores. In some copper deposits, arsenic occurs in the form of minerals such as enargite and tennantite. The removal of arsenic in ores containing copper is critical to the production of pure copper and the management of the environmental challenges caused by the smelting process. Due to the environmental risk caused by arsenic emission and the deteriorated quality of the copper product, smelting of enargite concentrates is not an effective method for the extraction of copper (Padilla et al., 2010; Safarzadeh et al., 2014; Long et al., 2012). Therefore, a number of studies have been carried out to develop arsenic removal technologies from copper ores using various methods such as hydrometallurgy (Curreli et al., 2009; Tongamp et al. 2010), pyrometallurgy (Dalewski., 1999; Padilla. et al, 2012) and bio-oxidation (Ehrlich, 1964; Sasaki et al., 2010). Several hydrometallurgical leaching processes like sulphuric acid, alkaline sodium sulphide and sodium sulphate and ferric sulphate leaching have been developed to treat enargite ores and concentrates. "Evidence shows that methane gas emanates from the mined-out area or gob of a longwall coal mine and can travel towards the working face, posing an explosion risk. Since the gob consists of varying levels of compacted rock, many researchers have modeled fluid flow through the gob as a Darcy-type porous media with a specified porosity and permeability. When studying methane gas explosions near the gob fringe, the Darcy flow assumption may not be applicable to describe the methane flame interaction with the gob. Computational fluid dynamic studies were performed modeling methane flame propagation across a simulated gob which was modeled as both a Darcy porous medium and as discrete rock objects with varying sphericity. Modeling the gob as a Darcy porous medium results in unrealistic methane flame propagation since the porous media assumption does not consider any differences in rock size and/or distribution. Additionally, the porous media model does not allow for ignition within and subsequent flame propagation through the porous medium, which must be modeled to understand the potential for methane gas explosions in the gob area. Modeling the gob as discrete rock objects produces more realistic methane flame dynamics and agrees with experimental observations. Modeling results show flame propagation across circles, hexagons, and squares, meant to represent rock rubble in the gob, produce different levels of turbulence which affects methane flame propagation velocity. This research demonstrates that modeling methane gas explosions in a longwall coal mine environment, specifically near the gob area, requires modeling obstacles, such as rock rubble, as discrete physical objects to capture the complex coupling of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer. INTRODUCTION Although there are methods to mitigating methane accumulations in a longwall coal mine, explosive gas zones (EGZs) of methane and air may exist and pose an explosion risk to nearby miners and equipment (Brune, 2014) (Karacan, Ruiz, Cote, & Phipps, 2011). In the event of an explosion, the resulting methane flame and pressure wave can be catastrophic as evidenced by the Upper Big Branch explosion in 2010 that killed 29 miners (Page, et al., 2011). Since the mining process is transient, it is difficult to determine exactly where these EGZs exist, but investigative reports show in many cases, these EGZs can be near the working face, behind the shields, or within the gob area (Brune, 2014) (McKinney, et al., 2001). Additionally, miners have recounted seeing flames moving back and forth within the gob and under the roof supports (McKinney, et al., 2001) and in other cases, anecdotal evidence of hearing small pressure pops deep within the gob area (Brune, 2014)."

"Investment casting offers many advantages for the near net shape production of complex geometries, however, molten titanium reacts with most of the refractories used in investment casting shelling systems, which leads to the formation of an oxygen contaminated surface layer. This layer, called alpha case, is 0.1 to 0.6 millimeters in thickness according to the casting section size and must be removed either by mechanical or chemical milling processes. Alpha case removal processes affect casting tolerances and may contaminate the part intended for medical applications (e.g. embedding of abrasive grit media in the alloy). A shelling system based on an yttria prime slurry has been developed and was found to almost suppress the mold metal reaction. Yttria is an expensive refractory, but slurry life was found acceptable for small castings using a closed container and flow coating process instead of conventional pattern dipping. Alpha case depth has been determined for Ti6Al4V by metallographic techniques and microhardness measurements on different step block casting cross sections. Alumina and yttria second prime stuccos were evaluated in this study. The shelling system minimizes finishing operations in the production of casting for medical applications.INTRODUCTIONTitanium investment castings have been in the commercial market since the beginning of the titanium era in the mid 50’s. Investment casting is a cost effective way to produce complex parts for medical, aerospace and chemical processes applications. Investment casting of titanium is difficult due to the high reactivity of titanium with air and refractories used for shell mold building especially for the face coat. Melting is done under vacuum and no shelling system has been proven effective to suppress the mold-metal reaction yet. The main issue with the mold-metal reaction is the formation of an oxygen enriched zone at the surface of the castings named alpha case (Frueh et al., 1997; Kim, 2002; Saha, 1986). The alpha case is brittle, reduce the fatigue life in service of the parts and must be removed by chemical milling.For industrial purposes, calcia partially stabilized zirconia based slurries have become widely used in titanium investment casting for primary coats due to a combination of limited metal shell reaction. Calcia stabilized zirconia slurries have an acceptable shelf life and offer an interesting production window. Our experience shows that a resulting alpha case depth is 280 micrometers for a casting section of 6.35 mm in thickness is typical with such a shelling system (Morin, 2013)."

The Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) is the copper concentrate moisture content beyond which liquefaction may occur during shipping. This study indicates that TML is a function of mineralogical characteristics of concentrate, which in turn may directly affect moisture retention properties. A comprehensive mineralogical and chemical analysis was conducted to determine the impact of composition and mineral content on concentrate’s TML. The analysis indicates that the high TML value is associated with particular minerals such as gypsum, swelling clay, muscovite and pyrite. Since higher TML values allow higher moisture contents for shipping, this property is desirable for concentrate inventory management and shipping flexibility. Scarcity of minerals that may increase TML contributes to limitations of shippable inventory. INTRODUCTION TML is the maximum moisture content of copper concentrate beyond which liquefaction may occur. Moisture content above the TML is considered a shipping hazard as it may result in loss of lives and cargo. The details of TML testing are given in ISO 12742:2007 (ISO 12742). In principle, TML is 90% of the Flow Moisture Point. The method of testing for Flow Moisture Point and TML is based on procedures that provide pulsations that simulate the cyclic force of ocean waves to determine moisture levels at which the onset of concentrate flow may occur. International Maritime Organization (IMO) provides guidelines for developing and approving TML testing and moisture determination in the context of its Moisture Management Plan (MMP) for shipment of copper concentrate cargoes (IMO 2013). The IMO regulations are specifically provided in MSC.1/Circ. 1454 “Guidelines for developing and approving procedures for sampling, testing and controlling the moisture content for solid bulk cargoes which may liquefy”. Since each port has its own operational characteristics, resource availability, peculiarities of governmental structure, and desired methods of interaction with the authorities, it is necessary to adopt the IMO guidelines to the local requirements. In order to establish a TML and MMP measurement system, it is required to implement and follow proper guidelines for the relevant procedures. For example, sampling procedures are developed in accordance of ISO 12743, “Copper, lead, zinc, and nickel concentrates – Sampling procedures for determination of metal and moisture content”. Moisture content of copper concentrate samples are determined in accordance with ISO 10251, “Copper, lead, zinc, and nickel concentrates – Determination of mass loss of bulk material on drying”. To assure strict adherence to the MMP procedures, the overall system needs to be integrated into the site QA/QC system, which would make them auditable and certified in accordance with standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 17025, and ISO 17020.

"Froth stability is critically important for an effective separation of fine and ultrafine particles using column flotation. While a desirable froth stability is required to facilitate the drainage of entrained gangue particles for secondary cleaning, excessively stable froths could create problems in separation efficiency and down-stream processing. In this work, we demonstrate that a stable foam was produced using a poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) solution at the temperatures below the critical solution temperature. In contrast, very little foam was produced at the temperature above the critical solution temperature (~32 oC) of PNIPAM. We can also tune the foam stability by changing the temperature of wash water. When warm water of temperature of 50 oC was applied, the foam collapsed and diminished. This is probably attributed to the switching of PNIPAM molecules from coiled to a globule conformation as the temperature is increased. Our results indicate that the foamability and foam stability can be tuned by tempartureresponsive PNIPAM. This is the first time that thermo-responsive PNIPAM has been shown to have potential as a modifier of froth stability in column flotation.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, column flotation has become a more prevalent process in the separation of fine mineral particles (typically < 100µm). Traditional flotation cells are sometimes less efficient in selective separation of ultra-fine particles (Kohmuench et al., 2009). The efficiency of flotation columns is dependent on the froth stability at the top of the cell to drain the unwanted gangue particles entrained in the froth. The greater froth height in flotation columns, compared to mechanical flotation cells, gives a longer froth residence time, allowing more of the drainage process to take place before the froth reports to the launderer. Secondary cleaning, by applying a wash water shower to the froth, enhances drainage of gangue particles entrained in the froth, and improves the recovery of the targeted minerals (Finch et al., 2007).While a stable froth is desirable to facilitate drainage of entrained gangue particles, greater amounts of fine particles have been found to contribute to excessively stable froths which could create problems for down-stream processes (Bethell et al., 2012). Operators have tried spraying additional wash water on the froth, and reducing frother dosage to destabilize the froth and to prevent backup at the launderer. The former is sometimes inefficient, and the latter results in unacceptable recovery loss. Currently, the best practice is often the installation of larger froth launderers, adding expensive defoaming agents, and/or using deaeration tanks (Bethell & Luttrell, 2005)."

To obtain sufficient material on which to perform copper-molybdenum separation testwork a variability set of drill hole reject samples amounting to several tons was put together to include the different ore types proportions expected in the copper circuit. The samples were treated in a copper circuit pilot plant and enough mass of bulk concentrate was recovered to conduct copper moly separation tests in the laboratory. Tests consisted of stage flotation reactor (SFR) rougher pilot plant tests, conventional laboratory rougher, cleaner and 4 stage open circuit cleaner tests. The mineralogical liberation analysis of the feed and concentrate was used to model the effect of liberation on the grade-recovery relationship of the different samples. Mineral kinetic parameters for the various samples were determined by calibration to the test data. The copper concentrate results as simulated from previous studies on the same deposit were used to simulate the variability in head grade and throughput expected for the feed to the copper molybdenum separation circuit for each of the first 10 years of production. This variation in feed was then simulated through the separation circuit to obtain optimised molybdenum grade recovery curves to forecast the circuit production for each of the first 10 years. INTRODUCTION Incorporating Geometallurgy into the design for a copper molybdenum separation is especially challenging due to the low mass of final concentrate typically produced during testwork. This is due to the low molybdenum head grades and high overall molybdenum upgrading expected. With molybdenum head grades of around 300 ppm, 1 tonne of copper circuit feed is expected to produce around 300 g of molybdenum concentrate in the plant. In the laboratory however, this may end up only resulting in a few grams. Obtaining sufficient mass for laboratory testing therefore requires starting with a large initial sample and careful testwork planning to maximise the utilisation of this mass. A testwork program was designed to investigate the effect of ore variability on the copper molybdenum separation circuit (here after referred to as the molybdenum circuit). Composite samples were selected to represent the various ore types, copper content, moly content, pyrite content and clay contents expected in the copper circuit feed. These samples were run through a bulk copper pilot plant to create the feed for the molybdenum testwork. The molybdenum testwork consisted of rougher kinetic flotation tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests, rougher cleaner kinetic tests with regrind, stage flotation reactor (SFR) pilot plant tests, open circuit cleaner tests. These tests were used to calibrate the ore kinetics in the IGS-FLEET model for simulation of the molybdenum circuit performance.

"THE NOR-ACME gold mine is located close to the north shore of Snow Lake, at 54°53' north latitude and 100°03' west longitude. It is about 75 air miles east of Flin Flon, and 36 miles by road from Wekusko at Mile 81 from The Pas on the Hudson Bay Railway.The claims which contain the Nor-Acme orebodies were staked in 1927 by C. R. Parres, who, with his sons, held the ground until 1938 when Nor-Acme Mines Limited was incorporated. In 194 l, on the recommendation of F. Ebbutt (1), this property was optioned by the Howe Sound Exploration Company, Ltd. A program of 50,000 feet of diamond drilling resulted in the outlining of two orebodies containing an estimated 5,000,000 tons with an average grade of 0.15 ounces per ton to a depth of 1,000 feet.A period of inactivity during the war years was followed by the construction of a mining plant capable of treating 2,000 tons of ore per day. Milling started in March 1949, and to the end of 1954 has resulted in the production of 383,793 ounces of gold and 32,906 ounces of silver from 3,331,403 tons of ore.General GeologyThe general geology of the Snow Lake area is described by J. M. Harrison (2), and will not be discussed here except insofar as it affects the Nor-Acme orebodies. The orebodies occur in rocks of Precambrian age that have been classified by Harrison as the Snow group, comprising meta-morphosed sediments interbedded with acid and basic volcanic rocks. The volcanic rocks include pyroclastic types which are unique in the region, a fact which led to their classification in the Snow group rather than the more widespread Missi group that generally occupies the same stratigraphic position above the Amisk group (Figure 1)."

"Commissioning of a circulating dry scrubber plant was recently completed at an existing facility, in order to treat the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns. Proper planning of the different commissioning stages and staffing an integrated team are the most important factors required for a successful plant start-up. A strong operational readiness plan must be in place as early as the start of construction in order to ensure a smooth transition from commissioning to operations. Plant performance can meet or exceed performance criteria within the required timeframe if the proper group dynamic and good communication is established between construction, commissioning and operations teams.INTRODUCTIONCommissioning of a circulating dry scrubber (CDS) plant was recently completed at an existing facility in Quebec, Canada. The CDS plant treats the sulphur dioxide off-gas emitted from rotary kilns in order to meet increasingly stringent environmental requirements. This installation enables the existing facility to reduce their sulphur emissions by over 90%.The CDS ProcessA general overview of the CDS process is presented in Figure 1 below. The combined, de-dusted off-gas from multiple kilns is sent to the CDS, which acts as an entrained fluid bed, where the gas is contacted with a water mist, re-circulated solids and hydrated lime. The SO2 from the gas stream and the available calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) from the hydrated lime dissolve in the water and react to ultimately form calcium sulphites and gypsum. The solid residue (referred to as CDS residue), is the primary byproductof the process.Fresh hydrated lime and CDS residue is captured by the dust collection system and is re-circulated to the CDS via a fluidised transport system. Clean off-gas passes through the dust-collection system and is then sent to the atmosphere by a single exhaust fan.The CDS residue purged from the system is combined with the dust collected from the kiln offgas system and this mixture is wetted in the already exiting agglomeration system, to minimize dust generation during handling, and then sent to disposal."

"Four deep-seated rockslide systems were investigated and are under surveillance by TIWAG (Tyrolean hydro-electric Company) since the mid-1960s after impoundment of Gepatsch reservoir began. These rockslide systems consist of several individual sliding masses (slabs) which show variable activity from zero to a few centimetres per year. The focus in this paper will be on the findings for the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab which is part of the “Hochmais-Atemkopf” rockslide system.The rock mass has slid over moraine deposits in the last post-glacial period and was in equilibrium (or slow to extremely slow moving, respectively) until the filling of the reservoir began. During the initial reservoir filling in summer 1964 considerable movements had been observed over a length of 1000 m accompanied with an activation of the Hochmais slab. Geological investigations, additional surface and subsurface measurement showed that the sliding mass is characterized by an en bloc movement and the deformation accumulates within a several metre thick shear zone located within the moraine. In contrast to the deformation characteristics for the first impoundment process (1964 – 1966) where the magnitude of deformation occurred during impoundment, the maximum amount of deformation since 1967 occurs during the drawdown of the reservoir. Based on long term measurement it can be shown that the magnitude of deformations per year correlates with the minimum storage level in the reservoir. Other external influences such as precipitation and snowmelt have no observable impact on the deformation characteristic of the landslide. On the basis of long-term data series it was possible to determine the factors of influence and to elaborate a conceptual mechanical model which describes the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab induced by the drawdown of the reservoir. The mechanical model considers the reduction of uplift forces in the highly fractured and permeable rock slab during drawdown as well as increasing seepage forces in the less permeable moraine material."

"Instead of carbon capture and geological storage (CCS) that does not rely on structural aquifers, injecting carbon dioxide into sedimentary rock deep underground has been considered. For advection velocity of the fluid is slow, the permeability of sedimentary rock deep underground is low. In order to perform the CCS on the low permeable sedimentary rock, it is necessary to clarify the behavior of long term storage properties of carbon dioxide (CO2).In this study, the permeability and storativity of CO2 injected into low permeable rock has been evaluated. The injection of supercritical CO2 has been conducted on the specimen of Ainoura sandstone (unit weight: 2.39 g/cm3, porosity: 11.9 %) saturated with water by using flow pump method. The experiment has been set up to reproduce the similar condition of deep underground reservoir under 20 MPa confining pressure, 10 MPa pore pressure, 35°C temperature and 3 µl/min CO2 injection rate. In order to prevent an increase in pore pressure, the boundary condition on the outlet side of specimen has been kept a constant pressure.As a result, it has been possible to observe step by step the change of the differential pressure between both ends of specimen. Furthermore, the relative permeability and specific storage of rock under supercritical CO2 injection has been examined by the theoretical analysis of flow pump permeability test incorporating Darcy’s law for two-phase flow. It is observed that CO2 has been transmitted gradually while CO2 stored in the rock. It is also clarified that residual water has existed in specimen after showing the constant differential pressure in the end of the experiment. Using the results of the experiment, 3D core-scale flow-simulation by using TOUGH2 has been conducted due to confirm the flow of fluid and CO2 distribution in the specimen. From the experimental results and analytical solution to them, permeability and storativity are identified, and simulation results support the validity of the experimental results."

"During crushing, rock particle is subjected to complicated loading and the particle shape influences the fragmentation outcome. Thus, a highly controlled laboratory test is desired to establish the relation between the loading and the fragmentation parameters for better understanding the rock crushing mechanism. In this work, a split Hopkinson pressure bar system in combination with high speed cameras is utilized to carry out a dynamic ball compression test, in which the spherical rock sample is adopted to avoid the shape effect. Using the elasticity theory, the history of the axial symmetric tensile stress perpendicular to the diametrical direction along the loading axis is determined, from which the loading rate and the dynamic indirect tensile strength are calculated. With the aid of the moment-trap technique, the total energy absorbed by samples is accurately determined from the one-dimensional wave analysis. Furthermore by considering the kinetic energy of the sample fragments using the high speed camera snapshots, the surface energy is determined for each sample. The relations between the loading rate and the fragmentation parameters, i.e., the number of fragments and the surface energy are established. The application of this method to a granitic rock shows that it is flexible and can be applied to the crushing study of generic brittle solids. INTRODUCTIONCrushers are widely used to break rocks to extract specific minerals in the mining industry, and to obtain rock fragments with desired size distribution in construction industry. During crushing, the breakage of particles can be in either the single-layer mode or the multi-layer mode. In the single-layer mode, the particle breakage can be assumed to be isolated, in which the interaction between particles can be ignored. It is thus suggested by many researchers that highly controlled single particle test should be performed to establish the relation between the input mechanical energy and size reduction for better understanding the crushing mechanism (Yashima et al., 1987; Tavares, 2007; Pitchumani et al., 2004)."

Dual-energy X-ray transmission (DE-XRT) imaging is known from safety luggage inspections at airports. The use of DE-XRT technology for sorting applications in the primary raw materials industry has been the subject of numerous investigations. Beside other metal ores, X-ray transmission sorting is already used for the preconcentration of tungsten ore, gold ore and coal. The applicability of DE-XRT sorting is limited to ore types where differences in metal concentrations are measurable, based on an interpretation of X-ray images. Metal contents in particles occur in large varieties in terms of concentration, grain sizes, spatial distribution and mineralogy and therefore influence the X-ray absorption. As a result, each ore has to be tested individually for its suitability for DE-XRT sorting. The objective of current research at the Department of Mineral Processing (AMR) at RWTH Aachen University is to assess parameters influencing the detectability of rare earth oxides. Two approaches were followed: (1) Practical test work, based on artificial ore samples of defined compositions and (2) Computer-based simulation of absorption features of identical particle compositions. In total, more than 300 artificial samples of various compositions and metal grades were produced and X-ray images from DE-XRT sorting were analyzed. Results from the DE-XRT sensor were put into correlation with metal grades and particle sizes, to analyze influences and limits on the detectability of rare earth oxides. In addition, a new approach was tested in which the X-ray absorption of particles of various compositions was determined based on a Monte Carlo (MCNP) simulation. During the simulation, similar compositions, as used for the artificial samples, were tested and the X-ray absorption behavior during DE-XRT sorting was determined. A comparison of results from both approaches is used to assess the applicability of the MCNP-simulation for the prediction of the X-ray attenuation behavior during DE-XRT sorting.

"IntroductionThe leaching method selected for the dissolving of uranium ore depends in part on the physical characteristics of the ore, as well as the uranium mineralization. There are two main methods of leaching employed in uranium circuits in North America, one being ""Carbonate Leaching"" on sandstone, and pitchblende type ores, and ""Acid Leaching"", on quartzite type ores.This chapter deals with the acid leaching of uranium ores found in the Elliot Lake area, using sulphuric acid, for the leaching reagent, and ""pachucas"" for the contactor.The basic leaching process involves the pregrinding of the ore and the mixing of the ore with hot sulphuric acid, the mixture is air agitated, the air being used to oxidize the ore as well as produce agitation. THE cyanide plant of the Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining Company, Limited, at Wells, B.C:, in the Barkerville section of the Cariboo mining division, was erected during the latter part of 1932 and placed in operation in January, 1933. The initial capacity of the plant was about 50 tons daily. This was increased to 100 tons at the end of 1934 and stepped-up to 150 tons in September, 1935. It is expected that further plant extensions, for milling a total of 200 tons daily, will be required during the early part of 1936. Recent additions to the mill have been so planned as to permit ready expansion to 275 tons daily when underground development warrants the milling of this tonnage. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly the steps taken to bring the plant to its present capacity and to comment on possibilities for further plant expansion. The gold in Cariboo Gold Quartz ore occurs as free gold in the quartz and on pyrite surfaces. Some of it is very finely divided, specks l/10,000 inch having been observed microscopically, according to Dr. G. Hanson. In addition to pyrite, which comprises probably 15 to 20 per cent of the mill feed, galena and sphalerite are present, with small amounts of arseno-pyrite and chalcopyrite. Sulphobismuthites-chiviatite, galenobismutite, cosalite, etc.-occur more or less frequently in certain sections of the mine. Following tests on Cariboo ore by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, at Ottawa, treatment of the ore by straigh t cyanidation was recommended and a 50-ton plant employing continuous counter-current decantation was erected. This plant was built as a pilot mill, the intention being to erect a larger mill after metallurgical treatment had proved successful over an extended period. This original installation, however, has been enlarged and retained as an operating unit, additional equipment being added to it as capacity increases have been required.
