"Over the last 50 years disposal of uranium mill tailings has evolved from dumping untreated tailings into the nearest depression to depositing chemically-stabilized tailings into highly engineered management facilities. This paper describes the evolution of disposal methods and the criteria which have determined the development path followed. Remediation techniques to bring older and now unacceptable tailings deposits into satisfactory compliance with today's· regulations are reviewed.With the closure of the uranium mines in Elliot Lake, Ontario, considerable effort is being made on decommissioning the tailings areas by developing long term maintenance of water covers. The innovative methods being used to develop these water covers are detailed. Methods now under development in Saskatchewan for subaqueous deposition of high density or paste tailings for permanent disposal in mined out open pits are described.SummaryThe technology for uranium mill tailings disposal in Canada has evolved considerably over the past 51 years. This evolution has been driven by an improving understanding of how best to safely and permanently store tailings, in conjunction with stricter environmental protection regulations. Old sites are being decommissioned in situ, but may require long term care and maintenance. The use of water covers is an important technique in eastern Canada to prevent intrusion, radon evolution and, for the Elliot Lake tailings, acid generation. The major drawback of water covers in any above ground disposal method is the requirement that a long term maintenance and monitoring plan be put into effect for each site.New higher grade mines in Saskatchewan will increasingly use disposal in mined-out pits using the pervious surround method and/or paste tailings technology as a method to permanently dispose of these wastes and to permit “walkaway” after a few years of monitoring."

"Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. "In 1989, improved milling and recoveries resulted in a record production of 7 722 200 Ib Nb2P5 at the Niobec Mine. At the beginning of 1990, proven and probable reserves stood at 11 952 000 tons grading 0.65% Nb205. This year, the world steel market has slowed and as a result, niobium consumption is down. Consequently, production at the mine dropped 14% for the second quarter.IntroductionThe Niobec Mine is located approximately nine miles northwest of Chicoutimi, Quebec, (Fig. I). After ten years of production, the Niobec Mine is the only operating niobium mine in North America and the second largest producer of niobium in the world after Brazil.The Niobec Mine is a joint venture held equally by Teck Corporation and Carnbior. Teck Corporation operates the mine while Cambior is responsible for marketing and selling the niobium pentoxide concentrate (Nb2P5).The deposit was discovered in 1964 following an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. However, mining of the deposit did not begin until 1976. The initial production capacity of 1500 tons per day was increased several times to the present capacity of 2450 tons . The deposit is considered as an ample source of pyrochlore concentrate for at least 15 years at the present production rate.Niobium, also known as columbium, is a greyish-white metal used primarily as an alloy in various steels and other metals. The use of niobium in alloys heightens tensile strength and improves corrosion resistance while at the same time reducing the weight of the alloy. Niobium is also used in the fabrication of steel for the aerospace, automobile, and oil and gas pipeline industries. Although substitutes for niobium exist, their use often results in diminished performance and net cost increases."

"Line Creek Resources Ltd. produces three million clean tonnes per year of metallurgical and thermal coals for the international market. The mining operation, which is located in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, produces coal from four pits by conventional truck and shovel methods.The South Pit, which has been in operation since J982, has a benched highwall 490 m in height. Shallow dipping coal seams at the base of the syncline formation will be exposed in the highwall over the next four years of pit life. The first of these seams, which will measure 500 m in final highwall length, was exposed in J994. An auger, powered by a 1250 hp engine capable of cutting 2.2 m diameter holes, was brought on site in J994 and has proven to be a successful means of recovering coal from the J3 m thick seam.This paper covers the background to the selection of an auger mining method to recover highwall reserves together with the geotechnical and methane considerations for this approach.IntroductionLine Creek Resources Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd., owns and operates the Line Creek mine. The operation which consists of four active pits, a processing plant, and rail loadout is located in the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. Figure 1 shows the general area.The coal bearing sequence at the mine is preserved on the east and west limbs of a major syncline. Up to twelve mineable coal seams, ranging in thickness from 2 m to 15 m are contained in the formation. Within the pits the seams are stratigraphically consistent and structurally undisturbed, except for small-scale thrust faults that create multiple repeats of the seams."

"Transfer points on belt conveyors have long been a source of problems for both designers and users. Conveyors are generally given a low priority in new equipment layout, thus designers are often forced to compromise due to space limitations. Consequently, for this reason as well as for reasons of initial economics, many conveyors are supplied with less than adequate transfer points.Although not intended as a cure-all, a number of existing installations have been modified with the result that spillage has been reduced to a minimum and belt life has been extended. The most striking modification consisted of replacing conventional rigid frame idlers with five-roll catenary idlers.Although catenary idlers can be traced back to the early 1900s in North America, with a patent having been issued in Washington, D.C. as early as May 29, 1907, the practical application of this concept has only recently reached North America. Major installations include applications at St. Lawrence Cement in Oakville and Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, as well as belt conveyors at Stelco's Nanticoke plant and yard conveyors at Syncrude in Alberta. These installations were part of major capital expenditures for new facilities and included complete conveyor systems.However, this article will discuss the use of catenary idlers on existing rigid frame conveyors for the purpose of absorbing the energy of falling lumps, protecting conveyor belts and reducing spillage. We will deal specifically with an installation at Inco Metals Company in Sudbury, Ontario, where approximately 40 five-roll catenary idlers were installed on a 42-in.-wide belt conveyor handling ore located under the railroad car dumper at the Clarabelle Mill. Before-and-after photographs clearly show the tremendous improvement in the cleanliness of the location, and the savings in maintenance costs and extended belt life have prompted Inco to consider modifying other conveyors."

"Mathematics, process theory, process practice and computer applications are the main disciplines that contribute to developing useful techniques for computer simulation of mineral and coal processing plants. As in any multidisciplinary effort, communication or transfer mechanisms must be developed to facilitate the flow of experience between participants of different backgrounds. These mechanisms include written reports, verbal communications, workshops and transfer of computer programs. The SPOC project at CANMET is devoted to computer simulation and as such has addressed, or will address in the near future, problems inherent to methodology transfer. The first major output of the project was the material balance program, MATBAL2, which has been acquired by over 30 organizations. Program documentation, industrial workshops and summer student programs have been used to effect the transfer. This experience is discussed and the future outlined.IntroductionComputer simulation has become a common tool in many different fields of human activity during the past two decades, as illustrated in Figure 1. The total number of articles abstracted in Chemical Abstracts under the general subject entry of “Simulation"" has been following a pseudo-exponential growth since 1972 and was approaching 5000 in 1980, whereas no such entry was even used prior to 1967. This represents over a dozen papers published daily on the subject and should continue to grow to higher figures. Still, progress toward accepting modelling and simulation in mineral and coal processing has been very slow. It will be shown later that this slow acceptance is a cause rather than a consequence of the limited success of the various attempts made so far to draw unambiguous benefits from simulation applications. The real cause of the difficulties in fully accepting the new methodology lies in the multidisciplinary aspect of modelling and simulation, which does not suit the traditionally conservative approach that prevails in designing and operating large and costly processing plants."

"A mineral processing investigation to recover chromite was performed at Lakefield Research, under the guidance of CANMET personnel, on a 70 tonne ore sample from the Bird River deposit in Manitoba. In the laboratory phase a flowsheet was developed which involved grinding, gravity separation and flotation. The gravity concentrates were upgraded by magnetic separation and the flotation concentrates by gravity concentration. Pre-concentration by electronic ore sorting, magnetic separation and heavy media separation also was examined.The developed flowsheet was applied on a pilot-plant scale in the second phase of the testwork to the ore as received, and to ore pre-concentrated by electronic ore sorting and magnetic separation. Ore pre-concentrated by heavy-media separation was treated on a laboratory scale based on the pilot-plant flowsheet.Processing the are as received resulted in 77% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30% Cr20 J; processing are pre-concentrated by electronic are sorting resulted in 64% recovery of chromite in a concentrate analyzing 30.5% Cr20J.IntroductionA five-year mineral development sub-agreement was signed between the federal government and the province of Manitoba in 1984. The purpose of the agreement was to establish a work program which would strengthen and diversify the mineral resource industry of Manitoba. Basically, the agreement covers three sectors: Sector A, geoscience; Sector B, mining and minerals technology research; and Sector C, development studies.Project selection involved input from industry, federal and provincial representatives. In the case of industrial mineral s, the selection was initiated at a meeting held at the offices of the Department of Mines and Energy, Winnipeg, Manitoba, in October 1985. One such project was the evaluation of the chromite ore deposits at Bird River, Manitoba."

Arsenic extraction from Chilean copper concentrates up to nearly 99% was achieved, using hydrothermal reactions. Arsenic appears in nature in more than 200 mineral species, being arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4), and tennantite (Cu12As4S13) the most common species. In addition, arsenic is present in a large amount of copper concentrates, produced in northern Chile. Medical statistics show that in northern Chile, the amount of cancer to the lung, skin and bladder are the highest in the country. The latter situation, demonstrates the importance of studying metallurgical processes that do not generate atmospheric pollution. The hydrometallurgical processes such as hydrothermal treatment in autoclave reactors, do not produce gaseous emissions. On the other hand, the arsenic remains in solution from where it can be transformed in scorodite by widely known methods. Previous works about hydrothermal treatment of enargite have shown the feasibility of transforming the enargite of the copper concentrates into chalcocite or mineral species of the chalcocite family such as djurleite, digenite and for this reason enrich the concentrate in copper and pass the arsenic to solution. For this research, two Chilean copper concentrates were used, concentrate 1 with 5.5% arsenic and concentrate 3 with 1.8% arsenic. These concentrates were subjected to a complete chemical and mineralogical characterization. Later these concentrates were carry out to batch tests of hydrothermal treatment. Also, these concentrates were subjected to grinding to have different particle sizes. For the hydrothermal tests, a liter capacity Autoclave Engineer reactor was used. Characteristic of this reactor was the maximum temperature 350°C, 5000 PSI pressure, and 900 rpm agitation speed. Kinetic tests were carried out with the two concentrates maintaining the same solid: liquid relationship, the same agitation velocity and the variables studied were treatment temperature, time of reaction, concentration of copper in the solution and grain size of the concentrates. The conclusions of the study indicated arsenic extraction of the order of 93.98% from the concentrate 1 and arsenic extraction of the order of 98.74% from concentrate 3. After the hydrothermal treatment, the solids and solutions were characterized chemically, by electron microscopy and X ray diffraction. Also the solids were characterized by grainsize through a particle size analyzer (MICROTRAC). Results of batch treatment shows that arsenic can be release almost completely from real copper concentrates using this hydrothermal process and the next stage will be a scale up process in order obtain results for pilot plant design. INTRODUCTION Arsenic is an impurity that appears associated with copper minerals forming enargite, tennantite, tetrahedrite, and that due to the pyrometallurgical treatment either in conversion or roasting furnaces, it goes into the atmosphere together with the sulfur dioxide. A great quantity of literature can be found to eliminate arsenic or try to separate arsenic from copper. The methods used are mainly leaching processes with or without pressure (Padilla, Jerez & Ruiz, 2015) with different reagents like chloride media (Herreros, Fuentes, Quiroz & Viñals, 2003) or chloride media with sulphuric acid (Riveros & Dutrizac, 2008) or sodium hypochlorite (Mihajlovic, Strbac, Zivkovic, Kovacevic & Stehernik, 2007). It is known too that Chile is the first copper producer in the world and a great quantity of its minerals are in the north of the country, in Antofagasta.

As the demand for natural gas as a prime global energy source continues to grow, the search for new sources of the fuel spreads into geographical areas that are more remote from the marketplace. Along with this comes the need for longer and ever more efficient pipelines. This requirement for higher value in natural gas transportation is satisfied to a large extent through the application of high strength technology and innovative design approaches that support increased design and operating pressures. This paper reviews the latest accomplishments and successes in these technologies for use in gas transmission. It also explores some of the technologies which are targeted for the future to allow the industry to achieve even higher benchmarks in reliability and cost-effectiveness. The central element in the theme of high strength technology for gas pipelines is that of high strength steel. From tensile strengths of Grade 359 a few decades ago, more and more operators are now specifying Grade 550 linepipe for their large diameter projects. As well, Grade 690 steel is operating successfully in limited transmission applications and Grade 825 has recently been installed. With the introduction of the latest high strength pipe comes the need for high strength fittings. The industry's first Grade 550 fittings were recently specified and installed on a project with Grade 825 line pipe. High strength materials can only be implemented successfully if compatible design and construction processes are in place. The latest developments in strain- and reliability based design will be described as well as the corresponding advancements in welding and inspection technology.

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. The result has been that marginal tax rates imposed on mining and processing activities throughout Canada have jumped to hitherto unparalleled levels."

"The use of autogenous mills has become widespread, owing to their capacity and favorable capital and operating costs. Optimal operation of these systems is critical, given their high energy consumption and effect on downstream processing. A considerable effort has been spent over the years in the development of advanced control systems to achieve a better performance in this regard. However, despite significant advances, the problem still remains challenging, owing to the nonlinear behaviour of the system with respect to the mill variables, and, the unmeasured ore variability come from the mine.The mill load, in particular, can be seen as a state variable of the mill, which could be important for; modelling and control, and, important insights into the mill behaviour. In this investigation, time series cluster analysis was performed using online mill load measurements in order to identify the different control states of the mill. More specifically, this time series was divided into short non-overlapping segments. A distance matrix was set up for each segment and the information was captured by means of textural features, similar to that used in multivariate image analysis. These wavelet and grey level cooccurrence matrix features could subsequently be used to rapidly identify the normal operating conditions from the feed disturbances in the mill.In principle, the methods and models presented here, once suitably validated and calibrated, could be used in online process monitoring of autogenous mills. They also could serve as a foundation for developing more advanced process control models."

The traditional approach to managing information flow between a mine underground and overground, applied in copper mines of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., is mostly based on exchanging spoken information using the mine telephone network and printed documentation. This way of information flow significantly influences effective use of time of a shift foreman employed at a mining division. In order to minimise multiplication of significant information generated as paper documentation, a concept of an IT system module to input basic data concerning operation of the mining division was developed. The idea is based on computer software that permits inputting data in the underground and their immediate sending to the overground. The above-mentioned solution will permit significant reduction of administrative work time that each foreman has to do on each shift. The time saved on filling forms and communication will permit the foreman and the other workers involved in information flow to spend more time for execution of their basic duties. In the case of the supervision employees working in the overground, the IT system will allow all the interested persons to be informed directly, with no necessity to transfer the information on the situation in the given mining division by turns from one to another. On the other hand, saving time on administrative works will permit the foreman employed in the underground executing more detailed inspection of workplaces in his subordinate mine division. Thus, availability of the foreman for the mining division operation will be improved. KEYWORDS

ABSTRACT Orange Footwall 'sill' is locally concordant locally discordant, with the structure of its sedimentary walls. The sediments were folded in two directions. Folds, following both these directions, are preserved in the concordant portion of the 'sill'. It seems, therefore, that the porphyry has replaced the sediments, thus preserving within itself their structure. During replacement, the nascent porphyry may have been much weaker than its walls. Accordingly, under directed pressure, the porphyry could have flowed locally, disarranging the replaced structures within it and developing a flow structure discordant with the folds in the sediments. Some such action may account for the discordant parts of the 'sill'. INTRODUCTION The senior author has seen certain granitoid massifs that have an internal structure vastly different from, and discordant with, the structures in their wall rocks. It seems that? such massifs have moved independently of their surroundings. Yet, a structure section elsewhere in the same mountain range may reveal granitic rocks with internal structures that appear to continue the structure of the invaded rocks. In such a case, it is at least thinkable that the granite has replaced the older sediments or volcanic rocks. In February, 1950, the writers mapped, on 15 level of the Nickel Plate mine, near Hedley, B.C., a diorite or gabbro porphyry 'sill' that, in one cross-cut (1503), appeared to be quite concordant with the wall-rock structures, whereas in another cross-cut ( 1500) about 100 feet to the south, the same porphyry was discordant (see Figure 1).

"The zinc deposits to be described are in Lemieux township a few miles south of the Tabletop mountains, in the central part of Gaspe peninsula, Quebec. Although they have not been worked, they constitute a potential source of zinc and lead and structurally are of considerable interest.GENERAL CHARACTER OF THE OCCURRENCEThe deposits are in sharp-walled quartz-carbonate veins and breccia zones carrying locally, and in varying amounts, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, marcasite, chalcopyrite, and specularite. Those so far investigated strike generally north-south, have steep dips, and cut through sediments of Lower Devonian age, mostly calcareous argillites or siltstones. Wall-rock alteration is negligible.BROADER STRUCTURAL FEATURESThe principal known occurrences are in the south-central part of a dome structure measuring 6 by 5 miles. The argillaceous sediments are overlain, on the flanks of the dome, by sandstones and lavas. These have been stripped from the central part of the dome, revealing the veins in the argillites beneath. The veins formed after the volcanics, but the fractures and breccia zones in which the deposits formed are confined mainly to the argillite series, presumably because of the greater strength of the lavas.The argillite series is cut by dykes, sills, and small stocks of diorite and acidic 'porphyries' that are older than the veins.THE FEDERAL HILL AREAThe distribution of known veins is shown in Fig. 1. The characteristic features of the veins are well illustrated by the Federal Hill area shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, and described below."

In mining operations the cost of timber is an item of much importance, because the life of mine timbers is, in many cases, very short and, as the supply of the better grades becomes depleted, less durable kinds must be used. This, of course, tends to shorten still further the period of service-ability. While it is possible that concrete and steel may, to some extent, take the place of timber in mines, their high initial cost and the difficulty in installation will greatly restrict their use. Moreover, wood, besides being comparatively cheap to handle, possesses other desirable qualities, and for many purposes a satisfactory substitute is hard to find. Both the decreasing supply and the increasing price of timber make its more efficient utilization imperative. AGENCIES DESTRUCTIVE TO MINE TIMBERS Timber used in mines is exposed to destruction from many sources. Wear, breakage, and waste are responsible for much loss. Wood rollers and drum laggings must be frequently replaced on account of the constant wear by ropes. Unprotected timber in chutes and mills is also rapidly worn by abrasion, and track ties in main haulage ways get worn by the feet of mules, cut by ropes, etc. Large amounts of timber are broken by 'crush' and 'squeeze,' and much temporary timber is buried beyond all recovery in pillar workings and in those mines which resort to back filling. Decay and insect attack, however, cause the greatest damage. If not totally destroyed by one or both of these, the timbers frequently become so weakened that they break under the pressure upon them.

Confronted with this prevailing attitude, Canada's mining industry starts out with two strikes against it in its bid to attract and hold on to its fair share of available work force.Behavioural scientists have, for decades, been seeking answers to the questions:• ""Why do people work?""• ""Why do people choose a particular occupation?""• ""Why do people choose a particular organization?""• ""Why do people leave one organization for another?""• ""Why do some people stay in an organization?""• ""Why do some people work harder than others?""Their answers to these questions, although tentative and often contradictory, are being used by more and more organizations to solve people problems. Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. General Motors and the United Auto Workers turn around the car assembly plant in Tarrytown, New York in seven years from the plant with the poorest labour relations and production record to one of the best under a program referred to as ""improving the quality of work life.""2. Shell Canada and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers have designed a new petro-chemical processing plant in Sarnia using a set of principles that seek to optimize both the social and the technical system."

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Several factors contributed to this jump in pumping costs as follows:"

"In mills, metallurgical efficiency is important in every step of the operation through to the tails. Different problems which hinder metallurgical efficiency exist in different mills. One such problem occurred in the Bralorne mill at the tailings end of the circuit, where the washing efficiency of the filters was so low that serious losses in dissolved gold occurred.The new cyanide plant at Bralorne went on stream in August 1961. Test work done showed that: a flowsheet of grinding in water, jigging, thickening, agitating, followed by double filtration, gave satisfactory results and was more economical than a counter current plant. Two filters, 141 x 161, with approximately 700 square feet of filtering surface on each, were purchased and installed in series. Test work showed that this was ample filtering area for 500 tons per day.When the plant started up a density of 45% solids was maintained in the agitators, and a 20 ounce cotton dl1ck was used on the filters. Vacuum was between 23 - 25 inches. Under these conditions the filters would not work and only picked up a very slight skim of pulp. Various speeds were experimented with, 4 minutes per revolution being the most efficient. At this speed the thickness of the pulp on the filters increased to about 1/8”• It was therefore quite apparent that, under these conditions, the filters would not handle very much tonnage and the mill tonnage would have to be reduced drastically until the problem was solved."

"The Icon Sullivan Joint Venture ore deposit was discovered in June, 1965 by Messrs. Paul Benard, Bob Galipeau and Mac Watson working under the direction of Mr. Andrew J. Troop, as employees of the Icon syndicate. The deposit is located on the Waconichici River as the south end of Baie du Poste of Lake Mistassini, approximately 45 miles north of Chibougamau. Property acquisition and Winkie drilling was followed by a diamond drilling program to evaluate the deposit. Stripping of the open pit area connnenced in the late fall of 1966 and the first test sample of ore was shipped to Chibougamau in December of that year.Regular ore shipments to the mill of Merrill Island Mining Corporation Limited for concentration commenced May 25, 1967. Production to December 31, 1970 amounts to 42,960,000 pounds of pay copper.The ore is chalcopyrite in white quartz dolomite, and it contains a very small amount of precious metals. The quartz dolomite assumes a flat to gently dipping attitude and is associated with a graphitic argillite contact zone on both hanging and footwall sides, in dolomitic limestone rocks. There is practically no other sulphide present in the ore.During the summer of 1969 a series of pre-concentration tests were completed and a Wemco heavy media sink float plant was installed in late 1969 and early 1970. This pre-concentrator eliminates at least one third of the ore mined in the form of barren quartz dolomite prior to ore shipment by truck to the concentrator in Chibougamau."

"The effect of nitrogen on the flotation separation of sulphides from complex ores from Brunswick Mining and Smelting (New Brunswick) and Mattabi Mines (Ontario) was investigated. The most significant finding was enhanced pyrite floatability after as little as 3 minutes nitrogen conditioning. This was used in a novel sphalerite/pyrite separation process developed on the Brunswick ore. After aeration and Cu/Pb bulk flotation in air using xanthate the slurry was nitrogen conditioned, xanthate added and the pyrite floated in nitrogen. As an example up to 70% pyrite recovery with about 20% sphalerite recovery was achieved. Sphalerite was recovered from the pyrite tailings and the pyrite concentrate by copper-activation, raising the pH to 10 and floating in air. About 65-70% recovery at 35-40% Zn grade was achieved compared to 25% Zn grade by the conventional route. The process offers a promising alternative to current practice which seeks to depress pyrite at all stages. A possible mechanism of the effect of nitrogen is presented. INTRODUCTIONUse of gases other than air in froth flotation has been reported from time to time. [Podobnik and Shirley, 1982; Lin and Metzer, 1975]. Of all the gases, nitrogen would appear to hold the greatest practical promise because of its easy availability and chemical inertness. It is used in froth flotation in chalcopyrite-molybdenite separation [Redfearn, 1983]. The use of nitrogen in polysulphide chalcopyrite. this case is mainly to reduce the oxidation of a compound (Nokes reagent) used as a depressant for There is no reported use of nitrogen in the flotation of other sulphide minerals."
