The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Modular Mining's Computerized Dispatch System was selected based on reputation and superior customer support. Modular's dispatch system is a fleet management system that uses computer, data communication and global positioning sys- tem technology to produce automatic, optimized haul truck as- signments. Optimization is achieved by equally distributing trucks to shovels so that truck queuing and shovel idling times are mini- mized. The Olympic Dam Mining Operation involves the supply of some 2.2 million tonnes per annum of ore feed for the metallurgical plant. To achieve this approximately 9 km of tunnels are developed per year to gain access to the long hole open stopes that supply the majority of the production tonnes.Vast amounts of data are produced in the mining activity from the geology, mine design, scheduling, surveying, shift reporting through to the statistical reporting and analysis of the performance of the mine activities. Care must be taken when obtaining the data to maximise the usefulness of the data to other users so not to impose constraints or additional processes on future users.

Tumbling mills are grossly inefficient, using only 5 per cent of the total energy supplied for actual breakage. A significant proportion of this inefficiency is unavoidable owing to geometric limitations; rotating drum systems are prone to exhibiting certain regions (energy barriers) that resist particle entry thereby restricting the transfer of energy. Though such systems are inherently inefficient, improved modelling schemes may lead to slightly enhanced efficiency through better microscale predictions of key breakage drivers (stress, force). Central to achieving such incremental advances is the development of a universally accepted rheology for dense granular flows. Armed with a better understanding of these macro-scale ingredients, classical process modelling offers an efficient, spreadsheet friendly framework for recovering the spatial distributions of the comminution drivers. At this real-time level of process control, it should be possible to tune comminution operations towards more energy efficient configurations – the ultimate goal of this research. The present work employs validated DEM data to recover the full continuum field which will ultimately serve as a basis for calibrating process model outputs based on different rheological hypotheses. Such a continuumbased approach captures tensor properties like the shear stress and strain rate – both of which are necessary to developing a dense granular rheology. Moreover, DEM captures this data at the momentum transfer timescale of 10-6 s – no other measurement technique is capable of this level of spatial and temporal resolution. Importantly, the confidence in this DEM data is strengthened because it has been validated at the continuum scale using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) kinematic measurements. Validated DEM data is derived from batch experiments conducted within a 300 mm ID laboratory drum using three and five millimetre glass beads at 60 and 75 percent critical speed; such mill speeds are typically encountered in the tumbling mill industry. Dimensional analysis is conducted using critical rheological parameters (shear rate, shear stress, granular temperature etc), which are key to not only developing a granular rheology but ultimately will be used to tune our mechanistic models.

Managing productivity and improving efficiency for a healthy return on capital employed have become key mining industry strategies under prevailing tough global market conditions. However, achieving this in a multisystem environment such as a mining operation can be daunting. The field of discrete event simulation offers some relief, giving engineering teams insight into multivariable systems and stochastic processes. It allows for integrated system thinking and domain expertise to be woven into project thinking fibre. Directed system optimisation and therefore improved efficiency becomes possible. Furthermore, capital discipline accrues from optimal upgrade investments. This paper illustrates the practical application of this approach by reviewing a typical case study for a direct shipping iron ore operation. Dynamic simulation was used to establish maximum processing plant capacity under varying material characteristics and identify capital-efficient upgrades for increasing production.The study started with descriptive statistical analysis of existing data. Discrete equipment and system capacities were defined, followed by static plant mass balance calculations to establish bottlenecks and overall static capacity. Equipment ‘uptime’ and ‘downtime’ analyses established system and overall plant availability and utilisation. From this information, a dynamic simulation model could then be developed and initially calibrated against actual plant performance to verify its robustness. Once confirmed to accurately represent existing plant dynamics, system capacity response to variable changes could be tested to ultimately determine maximum plant capacity. Additionally, plant optimisation was incorporated to arrive at optimal upgrade points. Maximum capacity and necessary upgrades were established as a function primarily of feed size distribution. Additionally, the interfacing effects of rehandling feed material to the final product grade and potentially to life-of-mine were established as important outcomes. Tailings are generally deposited on or near to the mine sites, occupying the site area, and being an economic burden for mining companies. Tailings can cause several environmental impacts, such as leaking toxic substances and contaminating underground water, emitting greenhouse gases, and damaging natural bodies and wildlife. Geopolymerisation of mine waste effectively transforms mine waste into more valuable, environmentally friendly products. Geopolymers are inorganic aluminosilicate materials that are widely applied in the construction industry (Araya, Kraslawski and Cisternas, 2020). The high performance and the low-CO2 emission of geopolymers make this type of material potentially more desirable than ordinary cement, given that manufacturing one ton of traditional cement generates approximately 0.8 tons of CO2. This process is seen as a promising method for repurposing tailings and reducing the environmental impact of mining waste. However, the environmental impact of geopolymer production is not sufficiently comprehended (Mazzinghy et al, 2022). Moreover, geopolymerisation of mine waste can offer several economic benefits, including reduced waste management costs (Amari et al, 2019; He et al, 2022), reduced raw material costs, and potentially lower production costs. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure the economic feasibility of the process. This study aims to demonstrate the potential environmental impacts of geopolymer concrete produced using mine wastes and industrial by-products such as blast furnace slag (BFS). For this, a comparative cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was conducted on different geopolymer mix designs, and the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions results were compared to the ordinary cement. LCA can be used to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymerisation of mine wastes in various ways. One important impact category is GHG gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and is the focus of this study. Another aim of this study is to evaluate the economic feasibility of the geopolymerisation of mine wastes via economic analysis (EA) to identify the key economic factors and trade-offs associated with repurposing mine wastes through geopolymerisation.

Having worked as a consultant for most of his 40-year working life, mostly as a mineral property valuer, the author has seen many poor valuations. Most were valuations of exploration tenements where the selection of the rather subjective, but necessary, geological inputs raised the main concerns. Those valuations involving iron ore prospects raise particular problems due to the special characteristics of such deposits. Iron ore is more like an industrial mineral rather than precious or base metals and Reserves are determined not by a traditional cut-off grade but by customer specifications. This is intended to be an overview/keynote paper on the current state of the growing (yet consolidating) Australian Iron Ore industry. It has now moved beyond Western AustraliaÆs æPilbara Big TwoÆ of Rio/BHPB (with the emergence of the irrepressible FMG and Hancock Prospecting) to include the YilgarnÆs æMidwest ManyÆ (including US re-entrant Cleveland Cliffs through Portman) and projects in other States. Ore types have moved from haematite Brockman to martite-goethite Marra Mamba (including the RobeÆs mesas and below water table Yandicoogina CIDs) and magnetite ore types. There are DSOs and secondary process feed. Mineral valuers have to reflect today upon these and many other determinants of value when choosing the most appropriate methodologies to adopt when technically assessing and valuing exploration tenements containing iron ore. Set against a frame work of the JORC Code (2004) and VALMIN Code (2005), the general valuation issues involved in using the cost methods (eg multiple of exploration expenditure), market methods (eg comparable sales, rules-of-thumb and joint venture terms) and income methods (eg synthetic discounted cash flow (DCF)/net present value (NPV) modelling) are discussed. Relevant factors when valuing iron ore properties are discussed, eg ore type, lump/fines ratio, stripping ratio, water table, impurities and grade, particularly the JORC confidence category of the identified mineralisation. Remoteness and access to existing rail infrastructure is a key consideration.

Highwall mining is a specialised and largely automated mining method developed in the United States for the extraction of coal left under a shallow overburden cover after cessation of economical open cut mining operations. As the name indicates, coal is extracted from the seam exposed along a highwall by a remotely controlled continuous miner operating in a single unsupported opening and brought to the surface by a string of conveyor segments. The single entries are separated by coal .pillars and driven normal to the highwall, over areas where the thickness of cover and volume of recoverable coal is insufficient to allow or justify conventional underground mining. An additional highwall mining method is augering. The success of high wall mining operations depends significantly on geological features, notably the stability of the working roof, determined by the type and mechanical properties of the immediate roof strata. Stability of the ribs, absence of floor heave, faults and dykes are further important prerequisites for profitable highwall mining. The geometric relationship between the spatial attitudes of existing joint systems, the direction (azimuth) of the single entry opening and its vertical profile determine the unimpeded depth of penetration into the coal and thus its economic success. The mechanical implications of the lithological transition zone from a coal seam to either primary or original roof strata, compared to an interface between the coal seam and overlying strata, characterised by a sharp erosional boundary between coal and a secondary immediate roof stratum, are very significant. The compatibility between the response to mining by the geological system (floor-seam-roof) and the capability of the mining equipment to prevent the development of instability are essential requirements from a mechanical viewpoint. The minimisation of vibrations, very good horizon control, an ability to vary the profile of the opening, and the maintenance of consistently high advance and retreat rates, are also important aspects of profitable highwall mining.

Gross at the First Ordinary Meeting of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, August 18th, 1952.Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen:Confronted with the task of reviewing the progress of Mount Isa Mines Limited, since the inception of the Company 28 years ago, I soon found that effective coverage was a task beyohd me, if I were to confine the address within the limits of time allowable. Faced with the alternative, a summary, that could only fail to -do justice to the subject, I turned elsewherl? for inspiration and found it in Chester Wilmot's book "The Struggle for Europe". Those of you who have read this masterly contribution to the literature of World War II will recall that he takes us, most dramatically, behind the scenes and we learn of the thoughts and ideas that were uppermost in the minds of both allied and enemy leaders at times when decision's that profoundly influenced the course of the war were taken. I felt I could safely follow this rather novel approach to my own problem. Strengthened by the realisation that the technical achievements of the Company have largely been covered over the years, and that the results of our labours are mainly here before you, I have attempted to liven up my modest canvas by going behind the scenes, and have sought to deal with ideas and the reasons for important decisions, rather. than to embark upon a purely descriptive essay.If then, you will bear with me, we shall skip back through the years to the days of struggle that our President's address has so aptly covered, and find that one man's ideas and faith stand out beyond all others. W. H. Corbould must always be credited with having founded the enterprise, for he correctly appraised the potential of the struggling prospect and foresaw what could be done, despite the handicaps of geography, climate and need for heavy expenditure.

A mathematical model for spontaneous combustion of coal with moisture included is presented in this paper. The one-dimensional unsteady state model consists of conservation equations for oxygen, water vapour and inherent moisture of coal and energy for both gaseous and solid phases. A first order Arrhenius reaction rate for oxidation under both pore diffusion and chemically controlled reaction regime is considered. The rate of evaporation or condensation is also considered as a function of temperature of coal, water content of coal and gas streams. The equation of the model is solved numerically by the finite difference technique. Influences of different parameters on the process of spontaneous combustion can be examined by using this model. Also the model can be used to simulate full-scale storage conditions.

This computer-aided design system for mineral processing flowsheets which are based on froth flotation, size reduction and classification combines an expert system for generating flowsheet structures with numerical models for the physical processes and the economics. Design decisions, such as specification, size and placing of process units and the destination of recycle streams, are based on clear technical and economic criteria. These decisions are controlled by user-set parameters, which allow the incorporation of industry experience and preferences and the generation of sets of good designs, from which choices may be made by further criteria, such as controllability. Liberation is now fully modelled and the early results from this extension continue to suggest potential substantial increases in added value over conventional approaches.

Pressure filters were found to be necessary to produce Elura silver/lead and zinc concentrates at sufficiently low moisture contents for bulk cargo shipment by sea to smelters.The difficulty in obtaining low moistures was due to the fine primary grind, 80% passing 45 microns, and resultant fine concentrates, 97% passing 45 microns.The filtration system was designed to filter up to 90,000 tonnes/year silver/lead concentrates and up to 130,000 tonnes/year zinc concentrates.This paper details the preliminary test work to select Larox automatic pressure filters, and the commissioning and operation of these filters to achieve design criteria for both concentrates. The design criteria for both concentrates have been bettered due to the concentrates being coarser than the design sizing.

Spherical calcium dioleate particles (~10 ¦m in diameter) were used as AFM (atomic force microscope) probes to measure interaction forces of the collector colloid with calcite and fluorite surfaces. The attractive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface is strong and has longer range than DLVO (Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) prediction. The repulsive AFM force between the calcium dioleate sphere and the fluorite surface does not agree with the DLVO prediction. Consideration of non-DLVO forces, including the attractive hydrophobic force and the repulsive hydration force, was necessary to explain the experimental results. The non-DLVO interactions considered were justified by the different interfacial water structures at fluorite- and calcite-water interfaces as revealed by the numerical computation experiments using molecular dynamics simulation.

In pursuit of optimising the cemented rockfill system fragmentation of the aggregate, while travelling through the surface-to-underground aggregate transport raise, was investigated and a æfines estimationÆ equation was determined. When used with the rockfill strength estimation equation, the fines estimation equation enables an accurate estimation of the compressive strength to be derived theoretically. Optimum fill raise orientation was examined and recommendations are given depending on the varying stope dimensions. If the maximum dimension of the stope is less than 30.5 m (100 ft), a single, centrally located fill raise will suffice. However, as the stope dimensions increase, the number and orientation of the fill raises becomes more complicated and each stope must be examined on an individual basis.

The optimum defluorinating conditions for Sichuan bastnasite crude ore were determined by orthogonal experiments. Over 95 per cent fluorine in the crude ore was stripped by roasting 30 minutes of the crude ore with Na2CO3/ore =0.25 at 650oC. The stripped fluorine crude ore was further treated by NH4 Cl to recover rare earth. Above 95 per cent rare earth can be leached by water after the stripped fluorine crude ore mixed NH4Cl(NH4Cl/ore =1:1) roasted 1 h at 325oC. At the same time, the rare earth leaching solution contains little Fe, Si and Al. Therefore it is propitious to further purify the solution and recover rare earth.

Hydrodynamic and mass transfer performance are presented for a 72.5 mm diameter pulsed disc and doughnut column of the type used by Western Mining Corporation, Olympic Dam Operation, for the extraction of uranium from sulphate media using Alamine 336 as extractant. For the present purpose, 4.0 g/L sulphuric acid was used as solute. The mass transfer data were interpreted in terms of the diffusion model, thus accounting for continuous phase axial dispersion. The results indicated that an efficiency corresponding to approximately one transfer unit over the 1.0 m height of the column was obtained. This efficiency is comparable to that observed by Gottliebsen (1997) for a pulsed perforated plate column using 173 gm/L sulphuric acid.

Present practice of lead-zinc flotation at North Broken Hill Limited is described and factors influencing plant objectives and performance discussed. Mineralogical examination of final flot- ation products showed mineral liberation to be 94T complete and size by size metal recovery tables indicated a need for finer grinding to improve lead and silver recovery, but coarser grinding to improve zinc recovery. A steady grinding circuit, at constant ball mill power and cyclone overflow pulp density, is found desirable for satisfactory flotation circuit operation because instabil- ity in the grinding circuit inevitably leads to flotation instability and as a consequence less than optimal flotation operation. Remov- al of the variable lead flotation middling product from the grinding circuit decreased grinding instability.

The Phase I electrowinning system at KCGM's Fimiston Operation utilised the well proven technology of electrowinning precious metal values onto steel wool followed by calcining and direct smelting to bullion. The above process, while reliable and successful, was to some extent labour intensive. The Williams Mine in Ontario, Canada had published conditions under which precious metal values are electrowon onto woven stainless steel and directly removed using high pressure sprays. The current paper describes the testwork which was carried out to check the applicability of the Williams criteria to KCGM eluates arising from the elution of highly loaded carbon from the calcine circuit and lowly loaded carbon from the float tails circuit. Information is also given on the commissioning and operational experience which occurred.

An intensely sheared and mineralisedIzone occurs in the Quartz Dolerite Greenstone (or Younger Greenstone) mass on, the western limb of the Kalgoorlie Syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 ounces of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of.th e general geological and structural features gives rise to the expectation that the lode shear system,will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the maln syncline whose axial plane may be referred to as the "Boulder Dyke". Although payable ore has recently been found further south than previously, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is Problematical.'
