Commencing early in 1975, Saraji Mine in Central Queensland will product 3.56 million tonnes in the first year and then 4.57 million tonnes annually for the Japanese and European markets. The coal will be mined from a series of pits separated by corridors which will be mined at a later date. Through the corridors flow regional drainage structures and power lines. Relatively easy areas will be mined initially to assist the cash flow and to minimise start-up difficulties. For ease of scheduling it is desirable that pit lengths exceed 3 000m but this will not always be possible. Ramps were designed using 1 200m spacing and 5 per cent gradient as optimum but modified to suit specific conditions. One ramp will be in the end of each pit nearest the ROM hopper and stripping will commence from this end. The advantages so gained are shorter haul distances, immediate access to the coal after stripping and simplification of the excavation of the first ramp. Haul road location was defined by the minimum present value of construction plus operating costs. In Japan, shield tunneling method is generally used to drive a tunnel in sand layers around the urban area. In this report, appli- cability of NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method), which uses rock bolts and shotcrete as support, to water-bearing sand layers is studied aiming at establishing more economical tunnel driving technique. After the geological exploration, the conditions (i.e. pitch of steel supports, water content, cohesion, and fine content of ground,)necessary to ensure the face stability were investigated by using centrifuge loading tests. Concerning measures to manage ground water, an air permiability test was carried out to investigate the effect of the compressed air to cut-off inflow, and pumping test to study the applicability of dewatering. Furthermore, two dimensional elastic FEM analysis consider- ing progress of the excavation face was perform- ed to analyze stresses in the support system and deformation of the ground, and to investi- gate safety of the support and the ground. From these prior investigations, possibility of the applicability of NATM to the present pro- ject was predicted. Finally, based on these results, a real scale field application test was put into practice to confirm the prediction, and to pursue construction efficiency and phenomena which could not have been predicted Beforehand.

At the operation of mine winders in deep shafts considerable oscillations of winding ropes may occur due to elasticity of both wind-ing and balance ropes. The amplitudes of longitudinal oscillations may reach + lm at relatively low frequencies, ranging from 0.5 to 2 c/s. These oscillations may be dangereus for the rope and produce several hazards to the winding installation as a whole. They may cause conside-rable instant accelerations on the pulley and dangerous tensions in ro-pe wires. The excessive acceleration may cause the uncontrolled rope slip on the pulley. Several methods of limitation of these accelera-tions were developed, some of them have been already in control system: of electric drive of the winder. The most simple ones are: a/ limita-tion of the rate of change of acceleration and retardation of the win-der /so called "jerk"/ and b/ the proper selection of regulators of the winder control system to get the optimal control. The trouble in solv-ing the problem of rope oscillations is that the dynamic system of the winder is a nonstationaryone owing to changing distance of conveyance from the pulley. Besides, the system is described by the equations with distributed parameters. The brief discussion of the theory and its practical aspects are enclosed as well.

The Clermont Goldfield, from which about 300,000 oz of bullion have been extracted, was one of the major gold producers in Queensland. This paper is derived from a systematic study of the mineralogy, geochemistry, and stable isotope geochemistry of the deposit, based on detailed field work and logging of 57 reverse-circulation percussion drilling holes at the Black Ridge Gold Deposit (Fig 1), aimed at addressing the long debated question of gold-ore genesis at Clermont, i.e., whether it is of fossil placer or hydrothermal origin.Detailed petrologic and mineralogical studies indicate the hydrothermal alteration at Black Ridge is dominated by extensive siderite (+rhodochrosite-ankerite) veinlets and stockworks, which are concentrated along the deformed unconformity between the Anakie Metamorphics and basal conglomerates of the early Permian Blair Athol Coal Measures. Siderite alteration is also moderately developed in all other rock units represented at Black Ridge, including the Tertiary basalt. Weak to moderate phyllosilicate alteration is common throughout the deposit, including chlorite-sericite along the shear zone of the unconformity, and sericite-clay in the conglomerates. A sulphide-oxides zonation also has occurred, including pyrite below the unconformity, (pyrite)-chalcopyrite-marcasite-(hematite) along the deformed unconformity, and marcasite (hematite, pyrite) in the conglomerates.

Soluble salts can be removed from Bowmans lignite by water and acid leaching. The success of the removal of water soluble or acid exchangeable impurities is directly associated with the efficiency of dewatering these slurries. The filtration characteristics of a slurry at its natural pH (4.0) were poor, with a filter cake moisture of 65%. Acid treatment of the slurry at pH2 caused the filter cake moisture content to drop to 61 %. Various oils, oily surfactants and a flocculant were tested to determine the conditions for minimum filter cake moisture. A series of pilot scale filtration tests were conducted on flocculant dosed slurries with and without washing on a horizontal test unit. Moisture contents of 54% were obtained in laboratory testing using high additions of oily surfactant. For the pilot scale test work, moisture levels close to 60% were obtained with low flocculant additions, similar to results obtained in laboratory studies. Removal of soluble salts could be correlated directly to the final moisture content of the filter cake. This process of leaching followed by filtration resulted in the removal of approximately 75% (more than 80% with washing on the cloth) of the sodium chloride originally present in the lignite.

As a part of the Newcrest, Telfer Expansion Project, a consortium of Australian, Canadian and South African Mining Contractors in joint venture have been contracted to develop the hoisting shaft. The parties namely; Byrnecut Mining Pty Ltd, Murray and Roberts RUC and Thyssen Mining Construction of Canada Ltd have combined their individual expertise to excavate the shaft. There is a particular emphasis on the use of proven shaft sinking techniques from North America and in particular integrating electric hydraulic drilling equipment and personnel from the Canadian Mining industry. The Telfer hoist shaft when completed will have a finished diameter of 7.1 metres and extend to a depth of 1170 metres below the collar. The shaft will be fully concrete lined and will later be equipped for hoisting ore from the Telfer deeps at a rate of five million tonnes per annum. The shaft when completed will be the largest shaft ever completed in Australia on a volumetric basis. This paper will examine the technical aspects of the shaft sink, as well as exploring the integration of personnel and equipment from the frozen prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada into an operation in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia. What are the spin-off benefits for the development of other shafts within Australia?

Broken Hill has a long history of mining and it is without doubt a world-class deposit. It has seen production since 1885, notwithstanding the strikes that made the city infamous in days gone by and has given rise to three of the nation's leading mining companies; BHP, North and CRA. Prior to the formation of Pasminco in 1988, the mining and exploration activities were undertaken by separate companies who were business competitors and tended to operate in relative isolation. There were a few notable exceptions such as the Central Geological Survey of 1936 - 38 (Gustafson, 1939; Gustafson et al, 1950) and the Mine Managers' Association. The latter sponsored many university based research projects. At a local level there was good communication and cross fertilisation within this remote outback centre through personal contacts and professional bodies such as The AusIMM. Pasminco was formed by the merging of the lead-zinc interests of CRA Ltd and North Broken Hill Ltd. In Broken Hill this meant the joining together of North Mine and ZC Mines, the two largest mines then operating on the Line of Lode, to form Pasminco Mining Broken Hill Operations. Railway cuttings require the highest care in design and construction, as the pro- bability of failure concept does not allow any risks to be taken with hundreds of lives being dependent on continued stability. The usual geological influences on stability such as bedding dip and faulting are often discus- sed, but other major problems may come from the presence of sheet joints, cross joints differential weathering and seasonal or daily changes of ground water level. The design of rail cuttings has taken little note of the problems imposed by cons- truction methods, and low cost quarrying methods may seriously weaken a designed shape. The presence of berms and drainage ditches is often difficult to achieve as blasting imposes cumulative stresses and jointing on rocks. Contractors face difficulties in bidding extensive rock cuttings as variations in rock properties are often concealed and overshoot- ing the toe of a batter can easily occur. Modern blasting methods offer some solutions, but the best guide to safe successful cuttings is extensive investigation and the continued involvement of engineering geology at the stages of feasibility, design, construction and maintenance. Two case histories show the influence of folding, faulting and construction methods in the case of slope failure and slope stability.

The Emily Ann nickel mine is owned and operated by LionOre Mining International Ltd. The deposit was discovered during 1997 and is blind, concealed beneath 25 m of transported cover and a further 100 m of unmineralised Archaean felsic rocks. Nickel sulfide mineralisation is hosted predominantly in strongly deformed, altered and metamorphosed Archaean komatiitic ultramafic rocks. Subordinate felsic-hosted, remobilised mineralisation is also present. Mining of ore commenced during late-2001. Since the early days of exploration drilling, through feasibility delineation drilling and subsequent mining, a geological model involving thrusting and folding of a komatiitic-hosted nickel sulfide deposit has been an evolving theme. Development of appropriate mine geology procedures, including detailed mapping, significantly increased the confidence of mine-site geology and engineering staff in the geological model and improved operational efficiencies during start-up. This also allowed the engineering and mining team to develop a tolerance for the large fluctuations in daily production grade, with an understanding that budgeted production targets, on a level-by-level basis, were achievable. This paper describes the development of the current interpretation of the deposit and emphasises the importance of a sound understanding of deposit geology. The direct benefits at Emily Ann included improvements in drill targeting, resource estimation and mine planning.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

Magnetic field studies provide remote sensing of magnetisation distributions and a means to investigate moderately- to strongly-magnetised ore deposits that may be partially or totally buried. However, above-surface magnetic field surveys have limited capability to resolve the detail of magnetisation distributions because of the large separation between the magnetisation and the magnetic sensor. While some of this detail is available from magnetic susceptibility logging within boreholes or from magnetisation studies on recovered core, these measurements are limited to the exact trace of the boreholes. The large disconnect between ground or aeromagnetic surveys and highly-localised borehole sampling can cause problems in developing robust source models from magnetic survey data. The measurement of magnetic field in boreholes has the capacity to at least partially bridge that gap by measuring the magnetic field due to magnetisations proximal to, but not intersected by, the boreholes.CSIRO has developed the world’s first downhole magnetic tensor gradiometer. This instrument measures magnetic field gradients in all directions within a borehole. A prototype instrument has been built and tested as part of phase 1 of the Deep Exploration Technologies Cooperative Research Centre (DET CRC). The prototype performed well with magnetic pyrrhotite at the DET CRC test site in the Adelaide Hills and at Carpentaria’s Hawsons magnetite deposit south of Broken Hill. Further work is required to reduce the diameter of the probe so that it can operate in NQ holes (it is currently limited to HQ or wider) and to transform it to a continuous logging tool. The borehole tensor gradiometer can be used to investigate the continuity of magnetisation over a distance of several metres to tens of metres away from a borehole intersection and the structural dip of the magnetic body. It can be used to either replace or augment downhole magnetic susceptibility logging. The conventional CaO-SiO2-based mould fluxes are not suitable for high-Al steel casting because of the strong reaction between silica in the flux and aluminium in the steel strand. In the process of casting of high-Al steel, flux composition changes; with the decrease of the silica concentration and increase of alumina. Knowledge and understanding of the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on flux structure and properties are useful for flux design for the high Al-steel continuous casting. This paper investigated the effect of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio on structure, viscosity, phase composition of fluxes quenched at different temperatures and heat transfer of CaO-Al2O3-SiO2-B2O3-Na2O-Li2OMgO- F fluxes. It was found that flux melting temperature increased with the increase in Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Viscosity of the flux melts increased significantly with the increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio from 0.7 to 1.2, reaching the maximum value, and then decreased with further increase of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio. Raman spectroscopy analysis revealed that the change of the Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the change of aluminate and silicate structural units. The turning point for viscosity was attributed to the change in the degree of flux polymerisation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio increased crystallisation tendency of the fluxes. Heat transfer measurement by infrared emitter technique (IET) revealed that increasing Al2O3/SiO2 ratio led to the decrease in heat flux which is correlated well with the increased crystallinity of the flux. The results suggested that the flux with Al2O3/SiO2 ratio 4.3 is the best candidate among the studied CaO-Al2O3-based mould fluxes for casting of high-Al steel.

At Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs Weipa mine, the business improvement methodology Six Sigma is used to deliver measurable, sustainable outcomes for the business. The next step in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs improvement journey is to implement Lean Manufacturing at all managed operations. The operating environment for mine managers continuously evolves and effective mine managers must be flexible and adaptive to meet challenges. Governance and regulation constantly change in an environment of commodity cycles and finite resources. This increases pressure on the economic return achieved by the operation. As such, effective mine managers must be aware of and manage the operating environment û the broader, issues-based environment not just the immediate day-to-day responsibility of mine managing. This includes delivering on safety, community and environmental priorities. At Rio Tinto Aluminium, part of managing the business is via investment in the area of social partnerships to engage employees and the broader community in Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs commitment to sustainability. The Future Reef partnership entered with the Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation in 2005 forms an important part of Rio Tinto AluminiumÆs climate change strategy. This four-year, A$1 million investment funds programmes looking at the effect of ocean acidification on the Great Barrier Reef. Bendigo is AustraliaÆs second-most productive goldfield, having produced some 22 million ounces of gold between 1851 and 1954. Bendigo Mining Limited (BML), the sole lease-holder of the Bendigo Goldfield, is developing a mine that is planned to produce ore from beneath the historical workings for at least the next 25 years. The high-grade Bendigo reefs occur in the proximity of the chevron anticlines, which characterise the goldfield. Typically the reefs display relatively small cross-sectional areas and large (subhorizontal) strike dimensions. They occur in clusters due to interrelated structural controls. Most of the gold occurs as visible grains and laminae, and as such grade estimation is not amenable to ænormalÆ sampling and estimation techniques. The initial phases of exploration and development of the mine focused on understanding and resolving these sampling and estimation issues. In 2005, BML reviewed and updated the March 2004 Feasibility Study, refining the life of mine development strategy. The strategy fundamentally aims to exploit the 11 million ounce Inferred Resource and additional exploration potential by developing the current Kangaroo Flat Mine to produce ore at an initial rate of 450 000 t/yr in 2006/07, expanding to 600 000 t/yr by 2009/10; and developing the Eaglehawk Mine to produce 1 Mt/yr by 2011/12. Ore will be processed initially at the Kangaroo Flat site, and from 2011/12 also at the Eaglehawk Mine 1 Mt/yr processing plant. The two mines will connect underground in 2009. Total ore treatment capacity will be 1.6 Mt/yr, producing 600 000 oz/yr from a head grade of 12.7 g/t gold. The project is planned to operate for 25 years, processing 33.6 Mt of ore producing 13.7 Moz of gold. To achieve this production rate, the exploration and ore delineation programs will require up to 16 diamond drill rigs producing over 200 km of core per year. At the same time, approximately 8 km of on-reef development must be monitored and typically 18 stopes managed concurrently. The processing plants will be located in geographically constrained areas, which will limit the ability for selective stockpiling and campaign treatment.

The Grasberg is a large copper and gold open pit mine operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and located in the high equatorial mountains of Papua Province, Indonesia. The climate is alpine/sub-alpine with little seasonal variation in temperature and rainfall. The annual precipitation varies from about 3000 to 5000 mm over short distances around the Grasberg, but in general, an average daily precipitation of 10 mm per day applies and leaching of the overburden is continuous throughout the year. Mining commenced in 1988, and almost all of the overburden mined up to 2003 was potentially acid forming. The current acid drainage from this overburden is being collected and treated. From 2004 to the end of the Grasberg pit operation in 2014, approximately 70 per cent of the overburden will be potentially acid forming and 30 per cent limestone. A program of laboratory leach columns, field test pads and an instrumented full-scale dump was developed with the objective of defining scale up factors to quantify the acid and metal leaching rates and to evaluate the stockpile geochemistry and control options. The results of an ongoing seven year program have demonstrated feasible scale up between laboratory columns, field test pads and the trial dump in relation to material geochemistry and ARD evolution trends at Grasberg. The potentially acid forming waste types are highly reactive and maximum acid generation rate occurs within two to three years and that maximum copper release occurs within one to two years of exposure. The results also show that the net acid generation (NAG) test provides a good estimate for the potential acid load from overburden types. The chemistry, temperature and oxygen data from the trial dump suggest that oxidation and acid generation is occurring throughout the dump but at a decreasing mass rate with increasing distance from the toe of the dump. It is apparent that convection and/or advection are important mechanisms for the transport of oxygen into and within the dump. Key results and findings of the investigations carried out are presented and the implications of the findings for long-term ARD management at the Grasberg mine are outlined.

THE MORWELL BROWN COAL DEPOSITSTHIS deposits of brown coal in the neighbourhood of Morwell, are of tertiary age, and are represented on several horizons, but, owing to lack of evidence, the exact age cannot be fixed definitely. It is chiefly by reference to the basalt flows of the Older Volcanic series that the brown coal beds have been classified as of Pre-Volcanic and of Post-Volcanic age. The Pre-Volcanic brown coals are less widely distributed, and the seams generally are thin, though near Thorpdale a thickness of 40 tt. has been recorded, and from 10 ft. to 12 ft. in the vicinity of Narracan. Both of these localities lie to the south-west of Yallourn, and it has not been proven as yet whether these older coals and accompanying basaltic flows pass under the Morwell beds.The brown coal deposits have accumulated in an area where extensive faulting in early tertiary times has taken place with oscillations of elevation and depression of the land surface. In the vicinity of Yallourn, Paheozoic strata (probably Silurian) are exposed on either bank of the Latrobe River about a mile above the powerhouse weir, where the river flows through steep banks rising a couple of hundred feet on either side. The Silurian strata are highly inclined, and consist mostly of slates and Illudstones. Resting unconformably on the upturned edges of the Silurian is a conglomerate bed of Mesozoic age, above which occur beds clipping to the south-east of felspathic sandstones, with alternating mudstones at times carbonaceous, and containing thin seams of black coal.The brown coal seams and associated lignitic Clays, sands, gravels, etc, rest on the Mesozoic strata (as proved in the vicinity of the power-house and by boring north of the Latrobe River, near the old open cut), but do not appear on the surface of the Mesozoic, where these beds attain an altitude of more than 50 ft. above the present level of the Latrobe River.Half a mile upstream from the power-house a layer of basalt of the Older Volcanic series, almost resting upon the Silurian strata, is...

A major new mine to be developed at Pike River during 2005 has been designed to have a minimal impact upon the environment, and an overall net conservation gain. The Pike River Coalfield is located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand on the top of the Paparoa Range approximately 46 km north east of the coastal town of Greymouth. Pike River Coal Company Ltd (PRCC) holds a 40 year mining permit over the coalfield.   In October 2004, the Minister of Conservation granted PRCC access through 1.25 km of Department of Conservation land via an access agreement, and the Environment Court issued a number of consents for the development and operation of the mine, in addition to some existing consents.   The underground mine at Pike River is located under land administered by Department of Conservation, and has been designed to avoid or mitigate adverse environmental effects and integrate into the natural bush surroundings. The mine process has been designed to operate within an environmentally sensitive area and will incorporate technologically advanced methods of mining and processing. The mine process involves hydro mining of the coal, and transportation via a 12 km coal water slurry pipeline, to a dewatering complex located on PRCC land. This will ensure that traffic in the Pike River Catchment up to the mine is minimised.   An extensive series of management plans and monitoring programmes will be used to ensure that the environmental effects of the mine activities are minimised, by evaluating the performance of managerial procedures, and physical mechanisms in place to avoid or mitigate the effects. Trial mining and substance management plans in conjunction with an orthophoto and surface monitoring protocol will ensure that surface features, and water ways are protected from any adverse effects. The Blue Duck enhancement, and pest and predator control programme will help ensure that an overall net conservation gain is achieved.   Developing transparent working relationships and good communication with Department of Conservation, Iwi (Ngati Waewae and Ngai Tahu), and local environment groups has been and remains very important in the development of this project.

I would like to start by thanking The AusIMM and CSIRO for organising this excellent conference and inviting me to give a keynote address. Today I will focus on some broad observations of our industry, and leave the technical discussion to my colleagues who are presenting specific papers covering a wide range of topics. In preparation for this paper, I did a little research into the early history of the Pilbara iron ore industry. I was fascinated to read a quote attributed to Harry P Woodward, the Government Geologist in the late 19th century, before Federation. Mr Woodward described the Pilbara as an iron ore country and observed that æthere is enough to supply the whole world should the present sources be worked outÆ. Mr WoodwardÆs prediction could be viewed as wishful thinking and certainly at Hamersley Iron I would gladly envisage the Pilbara supplying the worldÆs entire iron ore needs! In reality, Western Australia accounted for 162 million tonnes or 36 per cent of seaborne trade in 2001. An impressive effort, but not quite the total world supply as Mr Woodward imagined. But we shouldnÆt dismiss these historical musings out of hand û perhaps we could see it as a challenge for the industry to æwork outÆ the present sources. We all know there is abundant iron ore in the Pilbara, and I expect it is only a matter of time until our collective technical expertise and sheer hard work will enable us to utilise its greater range of ore types. Opening up new markets will be a key pathway to creating additional value from the Pilbara ores. Today I will examine the state of play of our industry and the major influences that shape our business at present, before considering what the future might hold for us. I canÆt guarantee the accuracy of my crystal ball, but the stability and long-term nature of our industry does enable some reasonable hypotheses on where we are heading. I will also spend some time examining the way in which the iron ore producers are working to maximise the value of their resource base and obtain more from their existing capital assets.

Fleet management systems have been adopted by many open pit mines throughout the world and the resulting improvement in truck cycle times has been one of the most significant contributors to mine efficiency. Ongoing enhancements to fleet management systems such as interfaces for vital signs monitoring have given incremental efficiency gains. Each incremental improvement is another step towards a grand vision of a totally automated mine. A relatively new fleet management system is being integrated with two other technologies to provide a highly reliable platform for a networked information system which monitors mine machinery and production. The paper reviews the integration project, the features of the new mine site information network platform and the contribution to productivity and safety. The new fleet management system has a predictive truck dispatch algorithm. It also has a distributed database that replicates rapidly so that each machine in the fleet has an identical database, thereby making each machine aware of other machinesÆ locations on the site. High precision systems for navigating and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels provide individual machine operators with cockpit style real-time information to increase their operational efficiency. The integration of the new fleet management systems capabilities with the high precision systems that provide production information, machine vital signs data and operator information means that the mine operations and maintenance managers have real-time access to the whole mine siteÆs production data. Such a mine monitoring and reporting system is dependent on reliable wireless communications and reliable positions. Positions in fleet management and high precision systems for open pit mines are usually provided by global positioning system (GPS). Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as Glonass, and in the future Galileo, will provide additional satellite cover; however, some parts of open pit mines do not have enough sky visibility for reliable GNSS positioning and so a new centimetre level wireless positioning system called Locata is being integrated with the fleet and high precision systems to augment and backup the GNSS positions. The final integrated system will provide the highest levels of reliable position-based information to all stakeholders in a mineÆs operation, ensuring gains in productivity and safety.

It is usually the case that the short-term plannerÆs role is occupied by the younger site mining engineer. ThatÆs because mine scheduling is generally seen as a mundane and thankless task. But, short-term planners play an extremely important role in maximising the value of the mining resource, generally the companyÆs biggest asset. A look at any mining operation today will expose the competing drivers behind the operational and strategic plans. Operations are too often faced with pushing short-term constraints. It is the responsibility of the short-term engineer to answer the question of æWhere to next?Æ. In answering this question the young mining engineer is in an environment overflowing with urgency and constraints. Hasty decisions made at this time may have significant adverse consequences to the long-term value of the resource. Long-term strategy must address a broad and expanding number of issues that are generally overlooked by the short-term planner. It takes a holistic, rather than the prescriptive approach of short-term planning to determine the best strategic direction for the operation. To better understand the consequences of decisions made at the operational level short-term planners need better vision of the whole business. The key to improving the mining business is a planning process that integrates the short-term planners role with the overall mining strategy. Future developments in the mine planning process will focus on bridging this ædisconnectÆ between the operational objectives and the long-term goals. Improvements will come from the tools which planning engineerÆs use, and the planning methodology surrounding them. There will be significant hardware improvements to improve the speed with which a short-term planner can evaluate plausible options. Software that maximises the use of the improved hardware will be developed. Complimenting these technological improvements, conceptual methodologies of mine planning will improve to allow strategic planning to be brought within the focus of the short-term planning engineer. In todayÆs mining industry the young mining engineer is embarking on a career where business processes are paramount. This paper discusses the ædisconnectÆ that occurs today between the operational planning and long-term strategy and how this is driving developments in mine planning today.
