 The Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers deposits are mound-style volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) deposits in Australia. Textural, petrographic and microthennometric investigations of fluid inclusions in the Hellyer stringer system indicate that Type I, primary, liquid-vapour inclusions are 10 - 15 J.UIl in size, and yield homogenisation temperatures of 170 - 220¦C in early 2A veins, 165 - 322¦C in main-stage 2B veins and 190 - 256¦C in late-stage 2C veins. These data suggest a waxing and waning thermal history. However, the average salinity remained between 8 - 11 NaCl equiv. wt % in all Stage 2 veins. At Mt Chalmers, Type I inclusions up to 20 urn are found in quartz from the mineralised zone, and these inclusions yielded homogenisation temperatures of 160 - 268¦C and salinities of 5 - 8 NaCl equiv. wt %. Laser Raman spectroscopic (LRS) analysis indicates the presence of CO2 (<1 mole %) in the Hellyer and Mt. Chalmers VHMS systems. Semi-quantitative SEM/WDS microprobe analyses of fluid inclusion decrepitates indicate that the Hellyer and Mt Chalmers ore fluids were enriched in potassium and calcium but depleted in magnesium relative to seawater. PIXE microanalysis of fluid inclusions in quartz also indicates a significant base metal concentration in these fluids. Cation composition and higher salinities relative to seawater suggest that recycled seawater alone cannot be the sole source of the ore fluids. High base metal content and the presence of CO2 in the fluid inclusions imply that magmatic input of ore metals during seawater leaching of the footwall volcanic pile is a distinct possibility.

Despite the assertion above, this paper is not about to provide delegates with the answer to whom they ought to consult or identify the expectations that Maori might have in regard to the consultation process. It would be a very brave person indeed who would venture an opinion on such a sensitive subject. There are no short cuts to finding out what expectations Maori might have on any given situation. Nothing can be taken for granted. What this paper will attempt to do however is provide practical insights into what might be on the minds of Maori interests as they deal with the issues associated with mineral resources, particularly those under Treaty of Waitangi Claim. The Treaty of Waitangi has a significant bearing on the current debate between Maori and the Crown regarding ownership of mineral resources in New Zealand. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently hearing a case presented by a number of Iwi over the ownership of oil and gas resources in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. Others will follow. The Crown and Maori have never been able to settle differences over ownership rights without resorting to legal action and it looks like this scenario is about to be repeated in regards to minerals. The Crown has a duty to actively protect the Maori interest. This is a fundamental expectation in the relationship between Maori and the Crown. In the case of minerals, Maori have yet to see the Crown do its duty. The impact on developers has become evident through Maori objections to consent applications as the issues of mineral right remain unresolved.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

The Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Crown Minerals Act 1991 (CMA) both came into force on 1 October 1991. The purpose behind RMA was to integrate the existing laws dealing with town and country planning, land subdivision, water and soil, minerals and energy resources, coastal management, air pollution and noise control into one omnibus Act. Originally, there was a section in RMA dealing with minerals. However, this section was taken out of RMA and a companion piece of legislation - namely CMA - was passed with RMA.

Techniques have been developed for the dissolution of a wide range of rocks and minerals by a sodium peroxide sinter process. A olarge number of elements are determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and other elements such as arsenic and sulphur are determined by chemical analytical methods. The methods adopted to overcome inter-element and ionization effects on the atomic absorption results are discussed.

The amount of liquid retained in a porous bed is determined by weighing a column containing the bed.The column is attached to the free end of a cantilevered beam, and changes in weight are determined by calibrated strain gauges (which form a resistance bridge) attached near the fixed cnd of the beam. By coupling the output from the strain gauges to an amplifier and a recorder, a continuous record of changes in the drainage characteristics of the bed may be obtained.

Resonance re-emission from nickel vapour affords a convenient method for isolating the resonance lines at 3415A, 3515A, and 3524A. The vapour is generated by cathodic sputtering and is illuminated by light from a nickel atomic spectral lamp. The resonance lines thus isolated can be usefully employed for absorption measurements on mineral samples where the nickel concentration is too high for measurements with the more sensitive line at 2320A. A spectrophotometer employing a resonance lamp as monochromator possesses several advantages where a great number of determinations are made under routine conditions. The wavelength setting is stable under even the most rigorous conditions and with the provision for automatic setting of full scale deflection the instrument requires virtually no adjustment. The instrument has been used under routine conditions for the determination of nickel (in the range O· 05-2 per cent) in mineral samples.

Following extensive trials on a 100 000 tpa Research and Development facility at Kwinana, Western Australia, Hismelt Corporation (wholly owned by Rio Tinto) are confident of the future commercial success of this technology. The Hlsmelt process uses iron ore fines and non-coking coals to produce molten pig iron suitable for feeding to BOF and EAF steelmaking vessels. The unique process configuration combines direct injection of raw materials into the molten iron bath, high rates of metal and slag mixing, and effective post-combustion of the bath gases to achieve efficient coal utilisation. This is the key to the strong economic performance of the process.

A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

The refractory nature of residual gold in Kalgoorlie calcines is caused by occlusion in dense pyrrhotite formed by fusion within pyrite grains during decomposition. Fusion of pyrite increases as the rate of heating exceeds the rate of sulphur expulsion. By controlling these rates in relation to each other in a fluidised system fusion is limited and an expanded structure is formed. The increased area presented to cyanide solution, and the decreased diffusion distance, makes gold more accessible for extraction. Gold extraction from expanded pyrrhotite, before oxidation for porosity, is comparable with extraction from fully oxidised calcines from Edwards roasters. A method is suggested for standardised comparison of cyanidation residues.

In recent years it has been more and more recognised that applied geology can be of service to the mining industry, and many mining companies overseas now have permanent geological staff as part of the operating organisation.Most of these companies insist that the geological department must pay for itself by the savings it can make in operating cost, and the growing use of the geologist is proof that such savings are made.The geological problems in every district are different, and a description of the problems and method of attack in a specified district is a useful addition to the literature of mining geology. Very few contributions, from the standpoint of the mining company geologist, have appeared in the Australian literature so that, although the operations of Bendigo Mines Limited are still in the development stage, and its geological work newly established, a description of the routine geological work at Bendigo should beof interest.Although most Bendigo mining companies have not employed permanent geologists, they have utilised geological guidance wherever possible, and a great body of data has grown up. Acknowledgment is made here to the valuable work of the Geological Survey of Victoria, especially the writings of E. J. Dunn, H. Herman, and H. S. Whitelaw, and the maps of Caleb Thomas and H. S. Whitelaw; and also to the work of independent investigators, notably Chief Geologist, Bendigo Mines Ltd.

Stratigraphy of the Hamersley Province in Western Australia, featuring alternating units of banded iron formations and shales with contrasting electrical properties in a mostly gently undulating shallow-dipping layered geometry, is particularly favourable to airborne time-domain electromagnetic mapping techniques. Manipulated vertical cross-sections of modelled conductivity obtained from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of SkyTEM304 data enable the exploration geologist to interpret weathering profiles, shallow-dipping stratigraphy and steep structures, all of which are crucial aspects of bedded iron ore deposits genesis models.The Cobra Project is located 14 km east of the NNW-trending Menindee Fault Zone, which defines the western margin of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. The region comprises an extensive plateau of Brockman Iron Formation cut by a series of horst and grabens with a regional dextral strike-slip component. The 150° striking horst and grabens and associated 060° striking conjugate faults have approximate frequencies of 400 and 2000 m, respectively, and control the bulk of the iron mineralisation. Syn to late 150° trending dykes in part intrude the faults.In the Cobra region, elucidating the structurally dislocated stratigraphy without closely spaced drilling is very challenging. Geological mapping is hindered by the paucity of mappable stratigraphic markers within the banded iron formations and kinematic indicators. Airborne magnetic and remote sensing data sets highlight the dense lineament network, but provide limited assistance in quantifying relatively small apparent displacements, or distinguishing faults from dykes with reasonable confidence.Interpretation of modelled conductivity cross-sections generated from laterally constrained one-dimensional inversion of airborne electromagnetic method (AEM) data offers invaluable insight where the quality of mapping or drilling is wanting. Subsequent targeted field checking and infill drilling validated the geological model interpreted from the integration of these data sets.The AEM technique alone cannot decipher the complex geological environments often present in the Hamersley Province but can facilitate effective iron ore exploration by focusing precious field time and assisting structural and stratigraphic interpretations in areas with sporadic and shallow geological data.CITATION:Murray, R, Neroni, R, Kepert, D and Bresnahan, J, 2017. The oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is discussed from several viewpoints. Limitations of our present knowledge are pointed out, and several points where further information would be of special interest are mentioned.Firstly, some properties of minerals and their effect on oxidation are discussed. Properties of different species, such as crystal structure, lattice bonding, and "metallic" properties are mentioned, and then the effect of variation within a given species is discussed. The effect of physical factors, especially particle size, is also considered. Other variables discussed include the importance of solution composition, and its effect on the nature and rate of reaction, and the use of various oxidising agents. Some factors concerned with the whole system, such as temperature, pulp density and stirring rate are then considered.Finally, the nature of various oxidation products is discussed with reference to the kinetics of reaction and the nature of the rate limiting step. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to electrochemical explanations of the reaction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the factors governing the rate of oxidation of sulphide minerals in aqueous suspension is a prerequisite for the effective control of many ore treatment operations. Rapid oxidation of sulphides is usually desired during the leaching of sulphide ores and concentrates, but in the cyanidation of gold ores, or in the leaching of uranium ores, any oxidation of sulphides may be regarded as an undesirable side reaction. The procedures and equipment used for sampling iron ore process streams have generally improved in recent years. However, there are a number of areas where significant issues still commonly occur, including sampling high capacity streams, sample cutter design and operation, division of primary increments at the secondary sampling stage, the performance of crushers installed to reduce the particle size prior to sample division, and the sample mass that is retained at each sampling stage. These issues of non-conformance with correct sampling principles are caused by factors such as increasing the speed and loading of conveyor belts to increase throughput, which changes the trajectory of the ore stream and may result in an inability of the sample cutter to handle the increased flow rate without sample loss. Failure to sample the entire primary increment stream at the secondary sampling stage is also a common issue as well as failure of crushers to provide crushed products of the required particle size due to ongoing maintenance and/or adjustment issues. A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland û Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground subsection of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes operational. Support of the site's system continues from head office which is continually involved in development of SUMPS and issuing revision updates to sites. The users, as well as programmers, were mostly geologists and mining engineers. This helped to ensure rapid, successful implementation. The broad approach of this system was to use interactively the specialist skills and interpretative abilities of the user mining engineers and geologists with the data manipulation abilities of the computer. It is an integrated system which covers geological exploration, deposit modelling, mine planning and production scheduling. An important feature of the system is that the user has full interactive control over each function through a graphics terminal where applicable.

For mining medium-hard materials on the surface, "Continuous Surface Miners" have been employed for some years. The latest generation surface miner extends the performance of this type of machine to the point where the same cost efficiencies can now be achieved in medium-hard materials as has been achieved in softer materials by machines such as the bucket wheel excavator. The paper explains briefly the technology of the Krupp Surface Miner (recently released to the market) and develops the costs of ownership and typical operating costs. Comparisons are made between a shoveLtruck system and Krupp Surface Miner (KSM) systems based on both truck and conveyor transport systems. Further benefits of mining with the KSM, such as environmental, selective mining and improved product reovery are discussed briefly. The equipment is now available to mine semi-hard materials (with compressive strengths up to 60MPa) on a continuous basis and reap the benefits which continuous systems can deliver. All new and existing open cut mines should review their costs with regard to this technology.

The following observations on the mineral composition of the lead-zinc ores at Captain's Flat, New South Wales, are based upon the examination of a collection of specimens made during a brief visit to the mine in January, 1942, in conjunction with earlier studies of specimens and mill products, which have 'been the subject of various Mineragraphic Reports, Captain's Flat is about 35 miles south of Canberra, and is connected with the main line from Goulburn to Bombala by a branch line to Bungendore, 23 miles away from the mine.The geology of the mine has been described by Kenny and Mulholland2 and by Harper.3 The country consists of Silurian sediments, which have been invaded by a composite sill of quartz-felspar-porphyry. Both sediments and sill have been folded gently, the axial lines of the folds trending north and south. In the vicinity of the orebodies the folds are steeper, and thru,st faults are associated with the anticlines. The intense compression and shearing that accompanied the faulting has converted the adjacent porphyry to schist. The Captain's Flat orebodies occur along such a zone of shearing and faulting, on the eastern limb of a steep, north-pitching anticline. At their southern end the orebodies are enclosed in the slates underlying the porphyry, but the northerly pitch of the fold carries the slate to greater depth in the northern part of the mine, where the orebody lies beween schistose porphyry on the hanging wall and massive porphyry in the footwall.THE OREBODIESThe orebodies occur along a N.-S. strike length of 4,200 ft., and from the point of view of mining, fall into three sections: the Elliot's Section to the north, the Central Section, and the Keating's Section to the south. The Keating's Section is separated from the Central Section by 500-600 ft. of mineralised ground of so low a grade as' to be called barren, and is offset about 125 ft. to the 'east of the Central body by an oblique fault striking N.300E. Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...
