Review of the mining legislation in New Zealand has coincided with a number of radical changes. These include a redirection of economic management towards a more open and competitive economy; major reform of the state sector aimed at greater efficiency, transparency and accountability; a new environmental administration; and a fundamental review of policy for management of natural and physical resources. These changes provide an opportunity to develop a consistent and coherent approach in the minerals and related statutes that will achieve objectives of economic efficiency, equity, practicability and good environmental management.

This paper describes a novel system for the biological sulfate reduction (BSR) of acid mine drainage (AMD) using primary sewage sludge (PSS) as carbon source in an upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor configuration. A UASB reactor was operated at a temperature of 35¦C and it received PSS (1875 mg/L COD) augmented with sulfate (1500 mg/L SO42-). The experimental results indicate that a high treatment efficiency was achieved at more than 90 per cent sulfate reduction at a liquid hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 13.5 h. In this study, the effects of various operational parameters were also investigated. The effect of a biomass recycle stream from the top to the bottom of the sludge bed was found to initiate rapid BSR from the bottom of the bed. Profile tests showed that effective and immediate sulfate reduction was achieved as soon as the influent entered the reactor. From these results, it can be concluded that the UASB configuration using PSS as energy source would be a viable method for the BSR of AMD.

The production of sulphuric acid at Port Pirie by the contact process began in March 1924 with the commissioning of the Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s roasting and acid plant. This plant, operated by B.H.A.S. Pty. Ltd. on behalf of the E.Z. Co., continued to produce sulphuric acid from the gases evolved when roasting Broken Hill zinc concentrate in mechanically rabbled furnaces until September 1954, when the plant was closed down.In this peri9d of approximately 30 years some 600,000 mono tons of 98·5 per cent sulphuric acid was produced, most of which was used for fertilizer production at Wallaroo and Port Adelaide. During World War II 14,400 mono tons of the above was produced in the form of 20 per cent Oleum and railed to the Salisbury Munitions Factory for use in the production of nitro-glycerine, gun-cotton and T.N.T.In the early post-war period various ways of converting at least some of the sulphur in the gases' discharged to atmosphere from the lead sintering plant were considered until, in 1949, it was decided to erect a modern contact acid plant. Much work remained to be done on the roasting plant to produce a gas of suitable grade for the contact process and also on the design of a purification section suitable for the treatment of D.L. gases.The acid section itself, however, was largely of conventional design and it was therefore decided that this would be erected first. To it was then attached a sulphur-burning section to allow it to operate as a "hot gas" brimstone acid plant until the roasting and gas purification plants had been designed and erected. In this way the urgent need for sulphuric acid in the fertilizer industry would be relieved, to some extent at least, as soon as, possible.

An intensely sheared and mineralized zone occurs in the quartz dolerite greenstone (or younger greenstone) mass on the western limb of the Kalgoorlie syncline. This zone comprises the western part of the Golden Mile and has produced the greater part of the 33,000,000 oz of gold produced to date from the main mining belts. A study of the general geological and structural features suggests that the lode shear system will continue southward on a pitch similar to that of the main syncline. Although payable ore has been found recently further to the south, the expectation of large quantities extending southward from the present mining areas is problematical.INTRODUCTIONUntil the late 1930's the principal mining activities in the western lode system were centred on three major ore-shoots formed on the No. 4, No. 3 and to a lesser extent on the No. 2 lode shears (Fig. 1). With the gradual reduction of grade in depth on these main ore shoots, increasing attention was paid to the "Minor Lode" system of lode shears known to exist in the same area. A large quantity of payable ore was found on these "Minor Lodes" particularly in the central part of the mining area. In recent years more attention has been given to exploration in a southerly direction.ROCK TYPES AND STRUCTURESThe western system occurs on the western flank of a dragfolded, south pitching syncline. The rock succession consists of Black Flag sediments overlying the younger greenstone horizon which overlies the fine grained older greenstone horizon. The axis of the syncline is regarded as a tight infold of the overlying Black Flag sediments. This infold has been faulted and intruded by albite porphyry resulting in the formation of a composite body of slates...

Ensuring the success of a major resource development project, whether in the Gippsland Basin or elsewhere, is typically both a complex and costly process. It is therefore imperative from the point of view of the proponents of such a project - and in particular the financiers - that everything possible be done to minimise administrative confusion and delay in the establishment phase of the project, and to put systems in place which enable the project to run smoothly and efficiently in the later stages of its development and operation. An essential element in this process is ensuring that the project management is able to come to terms with and deal effectively with the relevant planning and environmental laws.

Isa): I found many ideas to interest me in Haddon King's paper "Notes on Ore Occurrences in Highly Metamorphosed Precambrian Rocks" (Stillwell Anniversary Volume).At Mount Isa I have not been happy about some of the longstanding appreciations of the geological evidence as fresh data accumulated, and as more and more knowledge has been building up outside Mount Isa in recent years of sedimentary deposition of sulphides.Accordingly, I organized a small section of the Geological Department at Mount Isa at the beginning of 1958 under Senior Geologist, W. J. Murray to reappraise our geological record and investigate old interpretations and new ones that arise. The work is expected to take several years to complete, but it is hoped that sufficient will be done before then to permit the most plausible story on the ore genesis to be chosen. In the meantime, W. J. Murray has proposed, in a Company Report, that the.epigenetic features of the silver,lead-zinc deposits, which are essentially conformable with the shales, could have resulted from remobilized syngenetic deposits.Haddon King, on p. 159; has listed six assumptions that are required by a magmatic-hydrothermal theory of, origin for conformable deposits. The Zeehan field has yielded over 190 000 tons of lead and 26,000,000 oz of silver. Moh of the production took place between the initial discovery of silver-lead ore in 1882 and 1920, and the greatest part was extracted from fissure lodes in the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian rocks. It is demonstrated that the prosperity of the mines relied upon the silver content, which is apparently highest in these beds, particularly where spilitic rocks are associated with them. In contrast, galena occurring in orebodies emplaced in the Gordon Limestone is low in silver.Most of the workings are relatively shallow due in some cases to enrichment related to erosion surfaces.Fault zones within a complex anticlinal structure exposing the Proterozoic to (?) lower Cambrian formations appear to have been major factors in the control of mineralization.

Ventilation modelling is used to evaluate ventilation system performance. This paper describes modelling to assess potential changes to a single entry longwall ventilation circuit to improve ventilation and gas management. The longwall panel is extracting a 215 metre face in a 1.5 metre coal seam at a depth of 900 to 1000 metres below surface. The 1.5 metre B seam is located approximately 25 metres below the main 3.0 metre A seam and the gas content of both coal seams is approximately 20 to 25 m3/t. The B seam is extracted prior to the A seam and the mine relies on fracturing of the overlying strata to induce gas emission from the A seam to reduce the gas content prior to mining. Longwall operations in the B seam are constrained by limited ventilation and high gas emissions. Due in part to statutory limits on gas concentration and air velocity, the average longwall production rate is approximately 700 t per day.Gate roads in the B seam are single entry, developed using road headers and supported with steel arches. Additional timber cog support is installed to reduce roadway closure from abutment loading. Due to the slow advance of gate road development, mine management were reluctant to consider significant mine design changes, such as two heading gate roads; therefore, the investigation focused on determining the extent to which ventilation and gas emission impacted on longwall production performance, while recommending short-term, low-cost actions to improve ventilation and gas management to support increased longwall production.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. Some 50 miles of tunnel have been driven in the Snowy Mountains Area since tunnelling commenced in 1951. Hates have improved progressively due to the know-how of American supervision and use of large matched equipment of modern design.The work has been carried out by contractors, working almost exclusively under schedule of rates contracts. The Authority has maintained active research into tunnelling problems, especially that of support, and this has resulted in considerable economies and improved rates of progress. The contractors also have sought economies both by management and equipment techniques. Ammonium nitrate came into favour as an explosive essentially because of its lower cost, and handling techniques have improved progressively. Rock conditions preclude use of the "Mole" type equipment in its present stage of development, but one contractor introduced the "sliding floor" and this could exert a great influence on future tunnelling methods.Examination of tunnels that have been in service for some time confirmed the quality of the work and endorsed the policy of continued research and development.GENEHALThe Snowy Mountains Scheme provides for the diversion of the Snowy and Eucumbene waters through two transmountain tunnels to the western river systems. These diversions, together with additional regulations provided for waters already flowing inland, will provide an average additional discharge of 1,818,000 ac it per year for irrigation.Furthermore, approximately 6,000 million kWh of electrical energy will be generated annually in power stations with a total installed capacity of some 3,000,000 kW (Fig. 1.).INVESTIGATIONThe aim of investigation work is firstly to collect sufficient information to allow the overall scheme to be planned and then to follow up with detailed information on eachproject. Block caving is becoming a more widely adopted mining method allowing for underground massive low grade orebodies to be extracted economically. Underbreak during cave propagation is difficult to predict in terms of recovery and is not well-researched due to the small number of caving operations. During mining of E26 Lift 2 (E26L2) block cave at CMOC Northparkes Mines, a wedge of high grade material failed to cave, even with the assistance of preconditioning and subsequent attempts to induce caving. The ultimate solution for recovery of the uncaved wedge was the establishment of the E26 sublevel cave (SLC), which commenced mining in 2015, with production following in 2016. The SLC provides approximately 1Mtpa to supplement the lowering grade of the current E48 block cave feed. Applying the sublevel caving methodology to recover block cave underbreak has proven challenging. The impact of the caving stresses and preconditioning of the wedge have caused production limitations requiring continual remediation throughout production of the E26 SLC. The dependence on remediation work created a roadblock to implementing precharging as the prevalence of brow loss raised concerns over the inability to hook up the charged ring. In 2018, a wireless initiation trial was completed in the E26 SLC over 24 rings. The trial showed that precharging was achievable in this environment and greatly improved the safety of charge up personnel.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

In pursuance of the investigation into the influence of various elements on the properties of lead during the past year, the effect of several elements on the creep rate of commercially pure lead has been investigated; a standard initial stress of 500 lb. per sq. in. having been adopted for comparison purposes. Other work which has been carried out indicates that the relative results of creep tests may be altered by varying the applied stress, but this aspect of the problem will need to await further investigations for itscomplete elucidation. The results obtained with dilute tellurium alloys are considered sufficiently interesting, and in some respects are so extraordinary, as to warrant publicatiorr at this stage.n must be realised however that, since the results obtained appear to be at variance with those said to have been obtained in practice and those previously published, the present investigation can only be considered as a contribution to our knowledge of the general problem.Consequently it is not considered advisable or necessary to offer detailed explanation of the results given. In fact, some features of the tests about to be described will need further investigation before an adequate explanation is possible.

Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

The term geochemistry - chcmbtry' of the earth - is almost limitless in its implied subject, but of recent years a major trend of research in this field has been towards economic application in the search for mineral deposits, and in particular for those of some ofthe less common elements for which a demand now exists.Geochemistry is in a state of slow transition from a purely descriptive subject to a fundamental science concerned with the relationships that exist between the distribution of the elements in the earth's crust and the physical characteristics of the atoms of those elements. The progress achieved promises a set of basic principles which will relate the atomic characteristics of an element to the physico-chemical conditions that make for its dispersion or concentration. This means that, given a geological map of an areasufficiently detailed for the physico-chemical conditions existing in past geological eras to be deduced, there is the possibility that the relative distribution throughout that area of any element present, and its likely mode of occurrence, could be predicted from a consideration of its atomic characteristics.Since the atomic characteristics of the elements are becoming increasingly well defined by physical research, the attainment of this ideal of prediction depends upon:(a) the strengthening of geochemical theory; and(b) the development of petrological and mineralogical methods of assessing the conditions of temperature and pressure prevailing in geological formations at various stages in their history.The other prime requirement is a d.etailed geological map - a requirement that is all too often lacking.The fact that there has been very little "geochemical approach" to problems of economic geology in Australia should not be taken to mean that there is little point in trying to develop such an approach here in as active and as rigidly scientific a manner as possible. The degree of success that has attended the attempts so far made, to which reference is made below, suggests the reverse, particularly in view of the relatively slight cost involved if the investigations were properly organised on a centralised basis. There are three aspects of geochemistry that are directly applicable to the search for economic minerals.(a) The classic technique of the prospector can be made more sensitive and reliable by the use of modern equipment coupled with the application of geochemical theory to geological and structural data. The case of the rare alkali elements (see below) is givenhere as an illustration of the way in which the distribution of elements can be predicted from the first principles of geochemistry, thereby replacing the prospector's dependence on his "sixth sense" that enabled him to suggest that a certain area of formation was"favourable" for the occurrence of a certain type of mineral deposit.At its best, this sixth sense amounted to an almost subconscious correlation of all relevant associations and typical occurrences of the particular mineral experienced by the prospector during his...

Five wells have been drilled in the Basker/Manta Block of VIC/P19, Gippsland Basin, resulting in sub-economic Intra-Latrobe Group oil and gas discoveries at Basker-1 and Manta-1. A total of 21 individual hydrocarbon bearing sandstones were intersected by the two wells. These reservoir sand bodies were deposited by fluvial processes in a lower coastal plain environment. The modelling of sand body orientation and geometry is a critical component in the evaluation of the two accumulations. Seismic resolution of the thin (average 2 m to 5 m) sand bodies is inadequate for mapping their orientation and distribution. Dipmeter data has been successfully applied to the problem of orienting the sand bodies using FMS images acquired during the drilling of Gummy-1 and reprocessed HDT data from Basker-1 and Manta-1. Prediction of lateral extensiveness (geometry) of individual sand bodies has also been attempted. Interpreted palaeocurrent direction from all three wells is dominantly from the NW to the SE. Reservoirs in the Manta-1/Gummy-1 area are interpreted to be predominantly channel sands, deposited by relatively low sinuosity streams. As such they would tend to have a laterally extensive, elongate geometry. Sand bodies deposited in the Basker-1 area show a predominance of laterally accreted cycles deposited by meandering streams. Channel geometry may then be limited in the downstream/upstream direction by internal permeability barriers such as clay plugs.

Newcrest’s Cadia concentrator operated from 1998 to 2012 with a traditional SABC grinding circuit treating Cadia open pit ore. The Cadia comminution circuit was well characterised through surveys and data that are available in the public domain, and became a benchmark standard for the industry and practitioners modelling large SAG mill based circuits. In 2012, the HPGR-based crushing circuit was introduced in front of the SAG mill to increase throughput when treating the Cadia East ore that was derived from an underground block cave. This ore was expected to be more competent and have a coarser run-of-mine size distribution.Numerous previous papers have described the design and commissioning of the Cadia HPGR-based circuit.This paper describes the improvement in comminution energy consumption resulting from the introduction of the HPGR, including identifying the impact of process complexity and an increase in ancillary energy consumption for conveyors, screening, and crushing.CITATION:Lane, G S, Seppelt, J and Wang, E, 2018. Preliminary work being undertaken on the optimisation of decision strategies for an open-pit metalliferous deposit is presented. The Optimal Control method has been selected rather than the easier to implement Dynamic Programming method of optimisation since a fundamental criteria of Dynamic Programming is violated. Essentially a system of state equations and decision variables is developed for the operation under consideration.

An optical computing system was used to determine spacings and frequencies in geological fabrics and engineering joint fabrics.Three-dimensional arrays of joints were plotted on an equal-area net. Directions in which true spacings are seen were determined from these plots. Photographs taken along these directions were used for optical computing.
