The historic city of Charters Towers in North Queensland is underlain by an extensive labyrinth of old mine workings in a large number of flat lying, subparallel, main and cross-cutting cross reefs extending of the order of 5 km along strike and down to a depth of 700 m in parts. These old workings produced over 6.6 million ounces of gold at a grade of over one ounce to the tonne prior to closure in 1920.Citigold is progressing the development of a modern, high productivity, low cost new mine to extract extensions of these reefs as well as other as yet un-mined reefs. To do this it is changing the paradigm for operating in such circumstances. This paper first briefly reviews the setting for the development and then discusses the philosophies and concepts that Citigold is proposing to use, harnessing technology to create a mine that exemplifies more productive and safer mining based on operating in the digital age.The paper addresses how a modern approach is being applied to the planning of a mechanised, deep, narrow vein, hard rock gold mine under a city. It also describes briefly the successful æexperimentationÆ with longhole open stoping methods developed at the companyÆs small underground operation (the Imperial Mine) to the south of the city, which will also be expanded substantially as part of the Charters Towers Gold Project.The paper also addresses the development of new and/or modified technologies in the venture, with the objective of pursuing continuous and autonomous mining methods. The company is adopting a holistic systems approach, addressing people, process and technology in order to efficiently identify and locate the high-grade ore zones and then extract them effectively at a high grade by minimising waste development and haulage, dilution and energy consumption, and with minimal environmental impact.CITATION:Lynch, M and White, B, 2013. Environmental regulators are increasingly adopting risk-based approaches to protect aquatic ecosystems. The Australian and New Zealand Environment and Conservation Council (ANZECC) and the Agriculture and Resource Management Council of Australia and New Zealand (ARMCANZ) (2000) introduced a risk-based approach to water quality guidelines that use decision frameworks to adapt water quality guidelines to local environmental conditions. Environmental quality objectives are no longer a simple ‘pass or fail’ number such as restricting total suspended solids (TSS) concentration to a specified limit for a particular rainfall event. This approach ignores spatial and temporal variability and the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. The risk-based approach establishes levels where adverse effects may occur. If these objectives are not met, further risk-based investigation is undertaken to assess the potential impact to the ecosystem. Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) developed a dynamic simulation to predict the variability of sediment discharges, which is applicable for risk-based impact assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The application of the methodology over the life of a mine site is illustrated using a proposed South Pacific mine.The site location is in extremely rugged terrain with a high annual rainfall of approximately 4.7 m. There were two major sediment ponds proposed to reduce sediment discharges. A sediment and hydrology model was developed in Goldsim to provide daily estimates of run-off flows and sediment concentrations. A modified algorithm based on the Australian water balance model was created and incorporated into the Goldsim model and calibrated using recorded field data.The sediment module was developed based on a Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) assessment, an annual prediction of soil loss over a catchment. A land-use type erosion vector was developed for different land-use types and for each of the subcatchments, a subcatchment erodibility vector was calculated. This vector and the daily rainfall erosivity factor were used to estimate the daily soil loss. The estimated soil loss and the modelled run-off yielded predictions of daily sediment concentrations. Finally, a sediment settling module was used to predict the daily efficiency of the sediment ponds and hence discharged sediment concentrations.The results of this modelling form the first part of a quantitative risk-based assessment into suspended solids impacts. The second part is the assessment of the effects of these predicted TSS concentrations on aquatic ecology. As part of the feedback-loop required in a risk management framework, if the environmental quality objectives are not met then further management decisions and actions may be required to reduce the risks presented by suspended solids. This may include modifications to: the mine-development plan; construction techniques and scheduling; processing techniques; rehabilitation strategies; or hard-engineering solutions such as sediment basins or flocculation.The Goldsim water-balance model provides a quick and efficient method of testing potential remedial actions on predicted sediment loads and concentrations. In combination with a cost-benefit assessment, options for reducing sediment releases from the mine site can be effectively and quantitatively compared thereby providing mine operators with a basis for decision-making. Regulators can also be satisfied that potential impacts to aquatic ecology have been comprehensively assessed and the necessary management decisions have been initiated to limit risk to the environment.CITATION:Ind, M and Usher, B, ?2014. The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented. In planning mine ventilation systems, heat issues are normally associated with deep-level mines where auto-compression and virgin rock temperatures play a major role. However, a number of mines suffer from high ambient temperatures and humidity, very steep virgin rock temperature gradients and an influx of hot groundwater. Mines in Australia and, particularly, South-East Asia have to deal with these environmental conditions, both in the operational and planning phases. These operations normally have to take heat into consideration during the planning stages at much shallower depths. In high rainfall regions, the water table is saturated and groundwater flow rates are particularly high, which add significant water heat load potential to the mine ventilation system.This paper considers the ventilation challenges associated with hot groundwater conditions in mechanised mines. The paper is based on specific project experience gained from a number of projects in the United States, Australia and South-East Asia and draws on data from mines that experience hot groundwater conditions. Australian companies and consultants are becoming ever more involved in projects in African, South American, East European and Middle Eastern countries. However, significant differences in culture and approach to projects sometimes make these projects challenging for reasons that are not purely technical. Often the challenges are rather related to how the project owner and local authorities perceive the reality. These perceptions and sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding project costs and potential outcomes need to be addressed by the æWesternÆ project developer and consultant.This paper will discuss the specific experience of Snowden in studies commissioned by companies from such countries for the development of very large, low-grade gold deposits in some of the most inhospitable areas in the world. The paper will further review similar projects undertaken in other ænew worldÆ countries and compare these to the initial Snowden experience.As the process operating costs of operations in many of these countries are extremely competitive when compared to the typical Australian operating costs, the paper will review the operating costs and the factors which may be pertinent to a large project of this nature, both in the Australian and the ænew worldÆ context. High fluid pressures and deformation have been instrumental in the formation of high-grade gold lodes at the Archaean granite greenstone 12 Moz Sunrise Dam gold deposit in Western Australia. Historically, predicting the location of these lodes has been difficult due to the irregular nature and high-grade nugget characteristics of the deposit. Recent exploration successes and the discovery of the Vogue system have led to an improved knowledge of the deep extents of the mine. This new structural and gold distribution data has enabled a new 3D interpretation of the system and has provided a better insight into the links between deformation, fluid pressure evolution and gold deposition. Here we employ 3D geomechanical and coupled fluid flow modelling to better constrain areas of high strain partitioning, rheological failure and focused fluid flow, which provides a substantially increased predictive capacity for further within-mine exploration. The localisation of deformation in and around the main felsic porphyry and major shallow shear zones provides critical insights into fluid pathways that have contributed to the distribution of fracture networks and ultimately gold deposition during late stage deformation events. In 1999, the Mineral Development Centre of CVRD (CDM) acquired a flotation device referred to as Mini Pilot Plant (MPP), which is able to run continuous flotation tests with drill core samples. Since then this equipment has been used to define the flotation circuit and process conditions during the pre-feasibility phase of CVRDÆs copper sulfide projects. Until now, the MPP results had not been validated for an industrial flotation operation. The present work consists of a comparison and correlation of the results from a flotation MPP and an industrial plant. In order to make this comparison, an industrial plant was completely sampled and the feed ore was tested on bench scale and on a MPP. The metallurgical and mass balances of each test were used for the comparison.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. Area selection criteria for gold exploration have historically highlighted the low prospectivity of high-metamorphic grade terranes relative to regions with lower metamorphic grades. The Tropicana gold project, Western Australia, is a rare example of a major greenfields gold discovery in Archean mid-amphibolite to granulite-facies gneissic rocks that have experienced widespread recrystallisation and partial melting.The project, located on the tectonically reworked eastern margin of the Yilgarn Craton, is part of the Tropicana Joint Venture, which is 70 per cent owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia (manager) and 30 per cent by Independence Group NL. Construction of the mine commenced in the June quarter of 2011 and first gold pour from open pit mining is anticipated in the December quarter of 2013. The approved project will have a ten-year mine life and in the first three years of operation, gold production will be between 470 000 - 490 000 oz/a at a cash cost of A$590 - A$630/oz.Reserves as at 31 December 2011 total 56.4 Mt grading 2.16 g/t for 3.91 Moz of gold. The mineral resource, as of 30 December 2012, has grown to 7.89 Moz of contained gold, including Inferred Resources of 11.9 Mt at 2.83 g/t for 1.08 Moz.Economic gold mineralisation post-dates peak metamorphism and is interpreted as younger in age (ca. 2500 Ma) than other gold deposits in the Yilgarn Craton on the basis of structural and geochronological constraints. Mineralisation is genetically related to an imbricate thrust stack that records a prolonged history of reactivation during the Proterozoic era. Gold mineralisation formed from higher temperature (>350¦C) silica-undersaturated fluids that preferentially migrated though a favourable intensely potassium metasomatised zone. Permeability created during brittle fragmentation was accompanied by replacement of mafic metamorphic minerals, and synchronous partitioning of strain into pervasively biotite-sericite-pyrite-altered stylolites and shear planes that bound more competent lithons.CITATION:Doyle, M, Savage, J, Blenkinsop, T G, Crawford, A and McNaughton, N, 2013. "Base metal and precious metal deposits are well known for their significant geometallurgical variation throughout the volume of the proven resource. At the metallurgical level, the plant normally processes an upper oxidised layer, a transition zone and a sulfide zone, often leading to different processing techniques for the different zones. A novel processing approach is presented whereby alkaline leaching with glycine is used to leach base and precious metals, using a copper-gold ore deposit as a case study. Glycine is a cheap, non-toxic, non-volatile, highly water-soluble crystalline solid produced industrially in bulk quantities. As a chelating ligand it forms a number of stable glycinate complexes with Ni, Co, Cu, platinum group metals (PGMs), Au, Ag, Zn, Pb, Hg and Cd, with broad stability regions over an extended temperature-pH-Eh range, allowing dissolution of these metals in the neutral and alkaline regions (pH 7–13). It has been shown that this lixiviant system can leach the metals from their oxide, oxy-halide, basic sulfate, carbonate, native and various sulfide forms, including refractory sulfides such as chalcopyrite. Extraction of the metals from their soluble glycinates is easily achieved using a range of solvent extraction and precipitation processes, and the glycine remains stable in aqueous solution for recycle and reuse. Minerals bearing metals in Groups 1 to 8 of the periodic table are normally unaltered. This technology therefore provides a highly selective leaching environment for the extraction of numerous scarce metals of economic interest, with minimal interaction with gangue minerals, whilst using environmentally benign reagents. Problematic leach residues such as jarosites, elemental sulfur and silica gels are averted through this processing approach. This technology allows hydrometallurgical processing that is much less domain-sensitive in the geometallurgical sense, and utilises essentially the same key reagents for the whole deposit.CITATION:Eksteen, J J, Oraby, E A and Tanda, B C, 2016. Social licence to operate is becoming part of a mining company’s DNA in the same way as health and safety. Consequently, mining companies are receiving increasing pressure from their shareholders to ensure that they add enduring value to the local communities in which they operate. Apart from the shareholders, a company has responsibility to suppliers, customers, employees, the government and the community, which means under the social responsibility model they must be accountable to the other stakeholders. External and internal challenges in mining are increasing the difficulty and complexity of mines to operate. The external mining environment has a big impact on mining operations and is driving matters such as the focus on safety, responsible mining and resource management, sustainability issues, profitability and productivity. Considering this, it is expected that the widespread implementation of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related practices across the mining industry in the next ten years will increase, not just for the big players but for juniors as well. Companies, investors, governments and insurers who fail to act on ESG matters are to likely face greater risks. Demonstrating leadership in ESG will ultimately become a differentiating factor and market participants have much to gain from embracing ESG stewardship as part of their competitive advantage. Stock Exchanges have an important role to play in advancing sustainability in the capital markets. It is for this reason that the Sustainable Stock Exchanges (SSE) initiative was founded to serve as a global platform for exploring how exchanges can enhance performance on ESG issues and encourage sustainable investment. The SSE initiative provides an effective platform for dialogue between the United Nations, stock exchanges, investors, companies and regulators in the mining industry. The paper will explain why ESG reporting is crucial for the survival of a mining company and how the lack of transparency could be detrimental to its public image and shareholder relations. The paper will also identify bodies that regulate ESG reporting, as well as the available tools that provide guidelines on reporting ESG matters. Key ESG reporting parameters (at a global scale) will also be highlighted.

Global methods used to explore for minerals have progressed relatively slowly since the development of the first diamond core drill in 1863. Since then, key developments such as wireline geophysics (1920s), the tricone drill bit (1930s) and aeromagnetic surveys (1940s) all occurred in response to global events. In this project, BHP’s WAIO Geoscience operations team hypothesise that a global movement towards a greener future as well as an increasing intolerance for safety events will drive another step change in exploration methods. We have leveraged our relationships with exploration contractor partners and industry leaders to develop a realistic vision for 2033 and beyond, where drill rigs, earthworks and geophysical units are operated and maintained remotely; emissions of dust and waste are eliminated; hazardous energy sources are controlled; procurement is based on sustainability rather than cost and carbon emissions are tracked with the same rigour as production metrics. We have combined these visions into a series of graphical illustrations with the aim of inspiring ourselves, our vendors and our peers to collaborate further on producing a step change in our industry.

A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. One means of this evaluation is by examining Case Studies in the strategies and difficulties of developing contract and entrepreneurial research.

The Newmont Boddington Gold (NBG) processing plant was designed for 35Mt/y with ball mills expected to deliver a combined new mill feed rate of 4837 tonnes/hr. Since beginning commercial production in late 2009, the plant has steadily increased throughput to meet design capacity in 2014 and reached 37 Mt/y in 2015. Through improved efficiencies, changes to the milling circuit have taken place since commissioning to take the plant beyond its design to an actual throughput of 39.0 Mt in 2017 and a budgeted throughput of 39.4 Mt/y this year.The NBG milling circuit has four parallel ball mills, each consisting of a 7.9 x 13.4 m ball mill with twin 7.5 MW fixed speed motors in closed circuit with twelve 650 mm cyclones. Each mill is fed by two wet screens with the undersize gravitating to a mill discharge hopper where it is combined with the ball mill discharge and pumped to hydrocyclones for classification. The cyclone underflow is re-ground to a target P80 of 150 µm.This paper will focus on process improvements made to the NBG milling circuit which include cyclone reconfiguration, fine screen panel redesign, implementation of an expert control system, mill power draw increase and grinding media changes to take NBG beyond its design throughput.CITATION:McCamley, C, Petrucci, P and Blay, K, 2018. The oolitic iron ore reserves in Lisakovsky, North Kazakhstan represent quite a challenging deposit both from a technological and from a resource point of view. The difficulties in processing such types of ore are connected with the extremely fine dissemination of phosphorus and gangue minerals inside the oolitic formations. The goethite crystals are cemented in their structure by aluminosilicates with quartz and other gangue minerals and dissemination is so fine that they are not separable by physical methods. The laboratory tests performed for dephosphorisation show that the combination of alkaline roasting followed by low intensity magnetic separation and acid leaching enables the obtaining of high grade iron concentrate. The magnetic separation performed ahead of leaching is effi cient as a means of buffering the high pH by washing out the soluble salts and the excess of base and after leaching facilitates the removal of secondary liberated gangue minerals in the non-magnetic fraction. As a consequence, phosphorous content is dropped to a more acceptable level for the ferrous metallurgy and iron grade and recovery reach 61.6 and 80.8 per cent respectively.

Metallurgical process control systems in mineral plants often employ state-of-the-art monitoring analysers in an attempt to optimise plant operations and enhance mineral recoveries. These systems are unfortunately invariably fed by simplistic ‘sampling’ designs consisting of various in-stream methods or pressurised probes. These are unfortunate compromises and provide a false picture of what a mineral flotation or other process can achieve. The situation is further aggravated by some manufacturers using misleading marketing to suggest discrete cross-stream methods for metallurgical accounting and unreliable continuous in-stream off-takes for control sampling and that they are of synonymous integrity.Reliable, absolute or representative samples are often absent in many modern day concentrator plants, due to compromises around sample taking, particularly in terms of delineation and extraction errors and thus leading to sample bias. For more reliable information from online analysers we need a continuous, but much more reliable sample taken, than is current practice.Online analysers require a fully proportional and continuous supply of sample for effective process control, otherwise maximised or benchmark recoveries will be nothing but a pipe dream. Large discrete cross-stream samples from mechanically less reliable equipment cannot be used as feed to online analysers, as it will negatively impact real-time feedback and efficient process control.It is possible to build correct sampling systems that could do both process controls online and metallurgical accounting at the same time. Multotec Process Equipment (Pty) Limited, in close association with experienced sampling consultant Francis Pitard, have jointly patented a concept to achieve this and which is embodied in the design of the unique Rotating Cone® Sampler (International Patent Application No. PCT/IB2016/057464). This study demonstrates the application of HyLogging™ technologies for mineralogical characterisation of different iron ore types throughout the Hamersley Province (Western Australia), including a channel iron deposit (Murchison Metals Ltd) and bedded iron deposits in the Brockman and Marra Mamba Iron Formations (BHP Billiton Ltd).Drill core from these deposits was analysed using CSIRO’s hyperspectral drill core logging systems (HyLogging systems), which are commercially available at the AMDEL and AMMTEC laboratories in Perth (Western Australia), through a leasing agreement. These HyLogging systems provide high resolution photographs at 0.1 mm pixel resolution as well as visible and infrared spectroscopic refl ectance data at 1 cm spatial resolution. The minerals identified include haematite, goethite and its subtypes (ie vitreous and ochreous goethite), AlOH-clays (kaolinite, Al-smectite and white mica), carbonates, gibbsite, chlorite, amphibole and hydrated silica as well as water content. The abundance and composition of these minerals was established from the spectral data and was validated against XRF analyses.The full potential of HyLogging systems in the iron ore industry is only starting to be unveiled, but some major benefits have already been demonstrated:• HyLogging systems can delineate different ore zones by mapping the vitreous and ochreous goethites. This has a potentially large impact in mine planning and operations, as hard, vitreous goethite and soft, powdery, ochreous goethite have different processing characteristics that can affect plant throughput if not carefully managed.• HyLogging mineralogy can also be used to support stratigraphic interpretations of the host, for example in subdividing the Dales Gorge 1 - 4 submembers of the Brockman Iron Formation.• HyLogging can have a potentially signifi cant impact on waste rock characterisation, as many of the waste materials can be identifi ed and quantifi ed with hyperspectral data (eg clay-type,• hydration state).• HyLogging can provide accurate three-dimensional (3D) mineralogy to iron ore companies that will empower them to improve future exploration and resource planning.• Application of high resolution photography to further improve ore deposit domaining is also to be considered.

The iron ore mining district of Labrador West and adjacent Quebec is Canada's largest iron ore producer with almost 50 years of production. The area is currently experiencing a period of renewed activity not seen in decades that includes new mine development, mine expansion and exploration for new iron ore resources. All of the past and present production and exploration programs in the district are centred on the Lower Proterozoic Superior-type iron formations of the Knob Lake Group, located within the Grenville tectonic province of the Canadian Shield. The Knob Lake Group is a continental margin sedimentary sequence which was deformed and subjected to greenschist to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism during the Grenville orogeny. Regional deformation and metamorphism plays a key role in making the iron formation of the Knob Lake Group economic. The distribution of orebodies in the district is controlled by superimposed F1/F2 synclines which causes thickening of the iron formation through repetition. Ore mineralogy consists of specular haematite, magnetite and locally martite with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Regional metamorphism has caused an increase in grain size of the ore minerals making it more amenable to concentrating and pelletising. Altius has been active in Labrador West since 2003 and is now the second largest licence holder in the district with several iron ore exploration projects. The Kamistiatusset project is located in the heart of the region's transportation, power and mining infrastructure. The property has seen limited previous exploration, but covers several significant iron ore prospects. Work by Altius includes a helicopter-borne magnetic survey, ground magnetic and gravity surveys, geological mapping, sampling and 6000 m of diamond core drilling all of which confirm both a favourable geologic setting and ore mineralogy.

To enable ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-FO) to be used on an equal weight basis with nitroglycerine explosives, smaller diameter bore holes became necessary with consequent modifications to drill steel and burden on holes. Detonation of AN-FO in small diameter holes proved successful both with and without primer charges but some alterations were required to adapt anoloders to the smaller holes.Important factors in training all operators in the new charging method were the retention of improved fragmentation, avoidance of excessive overbreak and keeping wall rock dilution to an absolute minimum. The successful storage of ammonium nitrate in climatic conditions with daily temperature fluctuations above and below the critical 90°F has been achieved.INTRODUCTIONTechnical aspects of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (AN-Fa) blasting agent are well covered in recent literature. This paper deals primarily with the manner of its introduction as the principal explosive underground at Great Boulder Gold Mines Ltd. and with the many problems encountered in the process. Following reasonably successful experimental firings in June 1962', using granular ammonium nitrate and an anoloder, permission was granted by theWestern Australian Mines Department to carry out test work in selected areas of the mine.
