Paradoxically, the increased emphasis on water treatment in mining has generated a new problem û hypersaline brines. Currently brines are either disposed of into ash systems, lined evaporation ponds or hazardous waste sites. Evaporative crystallisation (EC) is an alternative, but the energy requirements can be prohibitive and the salt product is still a waste that must be disposed of. Eutectic freeze crystallisation (EFC) is an alternative technology that is capable of separating aqueous solutions into pure water (as ice) and pure, solidified solutes. It is highly energy efficient and does not depend on the introduction of any solvents. In addition, the simultaneous production of pure ice and potentially saleable pure salt(s) is a major advantage. Although EFC has been shown to be effective in separating a single salt and water, it is still in the early stages of being applied to the multi-component hypersaline brines that are typical of reverse osmosis retentates generated by mining and extractive metallurgy.This paper presents an EFC brine treatment protocol developed by the Crystallisation and Precipitation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The protocol incorporates brine analysis, thermodynamic modelling to establish which salts will freeze out and at which temperatures, followed by experimental studies to determine the kinetic parameters, such as nucleation temperatures, salt yields and crystal purity.Case studies showing the application of EFC for the purification of typical brines containing high levels of sodium, chlorine, sulfate and ammonia (Brine 1) and a mixture of sodium and magnesium sulfate (Brine 2) are covered. Modelling tools were applied to describe the phase behaviour of the multi-component saline systems under different process conditions. Experimental validation was carried out using synthetic brines of different (and increasingly complex) compositions. The results showed that EFC could be used to selectively recover the sodium as a sodium sulfate salt from both different brines. The simulation tools were useful in the analysis and understanding of the process.A preliminary economic analysis showed that the operating costs for EC were approximately nine times those for EFC, but the capital costs were much less- equipment for EC cost about half that of EFC. However, it is important to note that the capital cost calculations for EC are based on a technology that is already well established and with only relatively marginal future equipment cost savings expected. In contrast, EFC is a new technology, with significant future technology improvements expected.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

Macraes Mining Company Limited operates a 2.1 million tonnes per annum gold processing plant at Macraes Flat, Otago. This uses a conventional CIL route to treat oxide ore, and a flotation, grind, CIL route for sulfide ore. This paper describes the design and operation of this process plant.

The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date.   L&M Lignite Limited (L&M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

The Sams Creek gold deposit near Takaka in northwest Nelson was discovered in 1974 by CRA Exploration (CRAE) geologists. CRAE recognised the potential of the area and subsequently undertook a comprehensive exploration programme of geological mapping, soil and rock-chip sampling, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling. Exploration defined sporadic gold mineralisation contained entirely within a deformed and hydrothermally altered, peralkaline granite porphyry dyke with a seven kilometre strike length, and up to 60 m thickness. Rock chip samples indicated extensive and economically significant gold grades over approximately one kilometre strike of the dyke at Main Zone prospect. CRAE completed 30 diamond drill holes at this prospect and defined a limited resource. Oceana Gold Limited recommenced active exploration at the Sams Creek Project in late 2002, focusing on improving the geological understanding and known resource at Main Zone. Completion of 1041 m diamond drilling successfully increased the estimated resource to 10.7 Mt @ 2.12 g/t Au containing 729 000 oz at a 0.7 g/t cut off. A further campaign of 1560 m diamond drilling was undertaken in 2003 - 2004 to extend the resource and test the continuity of high grade mineralised zones. Deeper intersections of the porphyry dyke indicated geometrical complexity and grade variability similar to that observed at shallow levels. Recent research suggests that Sams Creek can be geologically classified as a variant of intrusion-related gold systems, and therefore comparable to some other, very large gold deposits. However, due to the rugged terrain and dyke geometry, surface drilling is reaching the limits of viability at Main Zone. If infill drilling continues to be successful then an underground decline may be developed to facilitate further exploration. Potential also exists along strike, where other significant gold anomalies are known but largely untested by drilling.

"Work in CSIRO with several Australian ores has shown that?by heating a high-phosphorus goethitic iron ore and then leaching with caustic or acid, the phosphorus levels in the ore can be lowered to a commercially acceptable value of around 0.08 weight per cent phosphorus (P). With increasing heating temperatures up to 1300¦C, the extent of phosphorus removal increased. This is considered to be associated with mineralogical changes in the iron oxide phases in the ore during the heating.Little phosphorus was removed from four high-phosphorus goethitic iron ores containing 0.12 - 0.16 weight per cent P in leaches with boiling water. However, leaches with sulfuric acid removed ten to 20 weight per cent of the phosphorus and leaching with sodium hydroxide removed even more phosphorus to produce leach products containing between 0.08 and 0.12 weight per cent P from three of the ores.After heating at 300¦C, leaches at a low pulp density of 0.5 weight per cent solids with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4 gave leach products with 0.06 - 0.09 weight per cent P. The lixiviant concentration required and extent of phosphorus removal depended on the ore. At a higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids, leach residues with between 0.07 - 0.14 weight per cent P were obtained.More phosphorus was removed from ores heated at 900¦C. Leaches at both the low and high pulp densities, with 1 - 5 M NaOH and 0.1 - 1 M H2SO4, gave leach products with 0.05 - 0.09 weight per cent P. However, the lowest phosphorus levels were obtained after heating the ores at 1200 or 1300¦C and leaching with 1 M NaOH or 0.1 M H2SO4. Leach residues with 0.02 - 0.06 weight per cent P were obtained, even from leaches at the higher pulp density of 25 weight per cent solids. Leaching tests on heated samples under heap leaching conditions at ambient temperatures have shown that phosphorus levels can be reduced to similar levels to that achieved in an agitation leach within ten days.CITATION:Fisher-White, M J, Lovel, R R, Sparrow, G J and Washington, B M, 2013. The profitability of gold placer mining operations is determined by more factors than many placer miners recognise until too late. This study is based upon field trips to examine the efficiency of mining and transportation of gravels to a wash plant by bulldozer and truck. At the examined open pit mining operations gravels were washed using water canons, derockers or scrubber trommels. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between unit costs and power requirements for gravel mining and processing. The author conducted a number of time and motion studies at four open pit gold mines, including the Maly Patom Creek, the Nizhny Patom, the Taimendra Creek and the Kadali-Makit in the Bodaibo District, Irkutsk Region and collected and processed field data. As a part of the study significant correlations were determined and empiric regression equations derived between: power requirements (Ep) and unit cost (Cp) for gravel processing; and total power requirements (Et) and total unit cost (Ct) for gravel mining, transportation and processing. Based on the results of the study it was proposed to modify the current mining procedure methods and to replace water cannons at the Maly Patom Creek with a PPM-5 derocker. Introduction of the proposed technology resulted in 2004 in US$385 000 mining cost reduction at the Maly Patom Creek over a short-time Siberian mining season.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

Both industries are important to the West Coast and bear many similarities, particularly at the corporate end of the mining scale. However there are very distinct structural differences which set the scene for friction at the boundaries. Examples of how mining impacts upon forestry illustrate where some of the friction arises and provides some insight as to where some solutions are or may be found.

The challenge facing the engineering provider is to calculate throughput rates when faced with disparate specific energies calculated by different testing methodologies. Typically, an ownerÆs team would expect that the throughput calculations be checked using more than one method, therefore it is inevitable that there will be differences, based on which methodology is used. This engineering challenge is exacerbated by the continuing evolution of contemporary circuit configurations such as two stage pebble crushing with or without high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) as the second stage, or second stage pebble crusher product reporting to the ball milling circuit, etc.This paper is a companion to the paper first presented at SAG 2011, which showed that the Bond Indices are an excellent tool for estimating the specific energy requirements for semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills in single-stage SAG milling (SSS) circuits, SAG and ball mill circuits (SAB) or SAG and ball mill circuits with pebble crushers (SABC). This paper presents how the Bond Indices have been used to calculate ball mill specific energies, and therefore throughput rates, for SAG mill based circuits. Once the ball milling specific energy is known, tower mill and vertimill energy requirements can also be calculated. Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine is exploiting the iron ore deposits that can be found in the Bruce-King-Mokaning farm areas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. The Bruce, King and Mokaning (Khumani) deposits are approximately 10 km south of the town Kathu, adjacent to the Sishen Mine. Assmang Limited is jointly owned and controlled by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited.Measurement, calculation and trending of plant throughput and chemical ore properties are critical in maintaining a successful beneficiation operation due to these values forming the basis of decision-making and thus promotion of efficient ore extraction. The Khumani management and engineering information system (MEIS) supplies information on key process parameters to an operational team and is required to do so within an optimal time frame, for maximum impact.Diverse data is put into the MEIS from multiple specialist systems, with interfaces that require manual intervention. Manual intervention is resource and time intensive to the point which limits the effect on the process and decreases the potential for value addition.Automation of interfaces decreases resource and time requirements, standardising plant wide data sources and providing the opportunity to provide specialist system data to decision-makers in a timely fashion, resulting in maximum impact on the process output.Engineering and metallurgical management systems were interfaced at Khumani Iron Mine by means of an automated table which facilitates the transfer of production data validated within the engineering system as input to the metal accounting system. This interface effectively assigns a master to each specialist data set employed for decision-making and delivers accurate process parameters to the production team within an optimal time frame, resulting in increased potential to improve beneficiation efficiency.CITATION:Nel, H M, Nassis, T and du Toit, T, 2013. It is possible to divide industrial minerals into four general categories: 1. fuels, 2. construction materials, 4. agricultural minerals, and 4. industrial minerals. It is proposed to ignore the fuels in the context of this paper and deal in general terms with the others. Mining companies have often considered getting into the industrial mineral business because they can see a resource development with good growth and consistent profits. However, many mining companies being conversant with the metallic side of the industry have spent sleepless nights determining which industrial minerals are most suited for their particular situation. Some have got into the business for the wrong reasons and wished they had never heard of it. Others have successfully adapted to the industrial minerals philosophy and now operate in both metallic and industrial mineral arenas. There is a large difference between firstly, the philosophy and secondly, the functions of being in the industrial minerals business as opposed to metallicÆs. The philosophies can be considered in parallel but it is necessary to clearly have an appreciation of the dominant influences that affect industrial minerals.

The Kwinana (Western Australia) and Gladstone (Queensland) industrial areas are among the few dozens of heavy industrial areas globally that demonstrate significant levels of regional resource synergies. Such synergies are also referred to as æindustrial ecologyÆ or æindustrial symbiosisÆ. Fundamentally they involve the exchange of by-products or sharing of utilities between companies in close geographic proximity to achieve competitive advantage and environmental benefit. A concerted research effort is currently underway to foster greater realisation of regional resource synergies in minerals processing intensive regions, in Australia and internationally. This paper summarises current insights from the foundation research into engineering tools and technologies and enabling mechanisms for regional resource synergy developments. Regional resource synergy developments were reviewed for 16 international and two Australian regions. It was found that Kwinana and Gladstone compare favourably with the well-regarded international examples of regional synergy development. Given the fairly strong evidence that self-organisation is critical for regional synergy developments, an implementation model has been proposed that captures entry points for synergy developments at the level of platform (industry collaboration), process (developing synergy opportunities) and project (assessing and implementing specific synergies). It was also found that regional synergies have so far developed in the absence of specific methods for identification and screening of synergy opportunities. Moreover, very limited attention has been paid to the associated technological and engineering challenges. The current technical research effort therefore targets: the development of a toolset for the identification and development of potential synergy opportunities; and assessment of technology needs and opportunities for regional synergies involving water, energy and materials recovery and reuse.

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. "Ore mineralogy and texture are primary variables controlling mill recovery efficiency in flotation plants. However, tracking daily variations of key mineralogical characteristics such as species-by-species liberation is not possible with current on stream analysers and assay lab techniques. In addition, traditional plant mineralogical analysis limited by long data turn-around times from central analysis laboratories typically provides only a time-averaged view of mill performance, e.g. by means of monthly composite feed, con or tailings analysis.This paper presents the results of a development and first field test of an on-site Automated Mineralogy solution (MLA or QEMSCAN) with the specific goal of monitoring recovery variation, ore quality and flotation performance on a mineral species-by-species and day-by-day basis, from up to twelve million direct particle observations per month. The trial was performed at a Pb/Zn-Ag operation in the US from November 2012 to April 2013. The focus of the study was three-fold: to validate the robustness of equipment and operational procedures for daily use by mine site technicians at a remote mine site to develop a methodology to boil down hundred-thousands of Automated Mineralogy particle data from size-by-size con and tailings samples to a couple of numbers meaningful to chief metallurgists to monitor recovery trend changes and correlate these to changes in the feed properties and/or flotation efficiency.The study focused primarily on the Pb/Ag rougher-concentrator circuit. Ten polished blocks of two and three size fractions of con and tailings were prepared by mine site technicians during a daily twelve hour shift. Eight hours of daily measurement time by the instrument revealed an estimate of the dayÆs recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance for Freibergite (Ag-species) and Galena (Pb-species), within 36 hours from initial sampling. Data quality was assessed by means of calculated versus measured assay reconciliation. Cumulative sum curves of recovery performance, ore quality and flotation performance reveal trend changes with a frequency of 1 to 4 weeks. These were correlated to cumulative sum curves of e.g. locked and slimed particle classes of the mineral species of interest, attempting to identify a possible root cause of recovery performance trend changes.
