A general model which approximates the effect of cross- flow has been developed to give a practical method for predicting the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. The model is based on a modification of Dietz's theory and allows for variations in both the permeability and hydrocarbon pore volume. In the particular cases considered, it is assumed that the permeability can be characterized by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume by a normal distribution. A simple graphical method which enables the practicing engineer to predict the behavior of a stratified system is presented The results obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by the Dykstra-Parsons method. As a result of this study the following conclusions have been drawn: (1) The effect of cross-flow in a stratified system can be appreciable, particularly at very favorable or very unfavorable mobility ratios; (2) Under normal conditions, the effect of variations in the hydrocarbon pore volume can be neglected; and (3) The failure to use all of the available permeability data can lead to large errors in the prediction of the behavior of a stratified reservoir. INTRODUCTION Various methodshavebeenproposedto characterize and to predict the waterflood behavior of a stratified reservoir. Most of the methods assume that the reservoir is composed of discrete homogeneous continuous layers. With this model, the degree of stratification can be measured by several parameters based on core-analysis data. Among these are the Lorenz coefficient1 and the variation of a log-normal permeability distribution? The behavior of stratified systems is usually predicted by the Stiles, Dykstra-Parsons method or some modification of these. In both of these methods the reservoir is divided into discrete homogeneous layers with no cross-flow between layers. In the Stiles method the mobility ratio is assumed to be equal to unity while in the Dykstra-Parsons method it is allowed to take on any value. Other predictive methods have been proposed; method allows for cross-flow between the beds and a method by Schmalz and Rahme6 correlate.s the recovery directly with the Lorenz coefficient. In this new approach, which is essentially a continuous analog of Hiatt's method, the effects of both mobility ratio and cross-flow between the beds have been included. It is assumed that the permeability can be represented by a log-normal distribution and the hydrocarbon pore volume or porosity by a normal distribution. These types of distributions have been observed by several authors, 1,2,4 and most field data seem to confirm their observations; e.g., if these distributions are assumed and there is a 1:l correspondence between porosity and permeability samples, the commonly encountered linear relationship between porosity and the log of permeability is obtained. Since, in many field cases the permeability and poro sity data are truncated or cut-off at predetermined upper and/or lower values, the effect of discarding part of the data was investigated with the proposed method. A better technique for truncating the data is suggested. THEORY In the derivation of the method to be described in this paper the following assumptions are made: 1. Capillary forces are negligible per se; their effects are only manifest in the relative permeability curves. 2. The fluids are immiscible, incompressible and homogeneous. 3. The reservoir is horizontal and uniformly thick; it is initially liquid saturated i.e., connate water and oil. 4. Asbestos fiber, before it can be used commercially, is separated from the rock in which it is naturally found. Johns-Manville Corp. is currently constructing a 12-story fiber mill, of which the first half is completed and in operation. The mill will be the largest in the world, producing about 30 pct of the world's fiber. It was engineered and constructed by a cooperative effort of the engineers of the Canadian Johns-Manville Fibre Div. and the general plant engineering dept. Detailed design work on all phases of the job was done by Surveyer, Ninniger & Chenevert of Montreal. A series of crushing, screening, air aspirating and air separating processes will separate the fiber from 10 tons of rock per min. But to process this amount of ore about 90 tons of air per min will be handled in the aspirating and dust-collecting systems. To express this in more common units, 2.5 million cfm of air will be required. All this air will pass through a bag-type continuous automatic filter and will be expelled to atmosphere in summer or returned to the mill for heating during the winter months.

Much has been done of late years to facilitate preliminary stratigraphical investigations, and for examination at considerable depths and in a certain character of material the diamonddrill, in its general forms, certainly stands pre-eminent among the tools for such work. But there are large classes of deposits —indeed, I may say the larger proportion in which ordinary. prospecting is done—which lie near the surface and are interbedded with soft and fine material. The method usually employed for prospecting these is by means of small shafts. These are sunk with considerable slowness and at considerable expense, depending largely upon the character of the material encountered, and are greatly interfered with by water. In this region the smallest are 3 by 4 feet, but they are usually considerably larger. Having had occasion during the past year to do a large amount of prospecting work, I have found the use of a hand-auger and drill of immense value in this respect, and in my practice it has largely superseded, and always preceded, the other forms of investigation. Recently, when increasing attention has been paid to mercury for environmental reasons, the interest of several plants is directed to the removal of mercury from roaster and smelter gases. When Outokumpu Oy built its zinc plant at Kokkola in 1969, intensive development work was started to find an efficient and economic method for mercury removal from roaster gases. A process was developed, after laboratory research and pilot plant tests, to eliminate and completely recover mercury from the roaster gases. The process was commissioned in 1970. The behaviour of mercury in the roasting process and several possible methods of removing it from gases are discussed in this paper. Theoretical investigations and empirical tests show that the removal of elemental mercury from gases by sulphatization is very efficient. Further, it is stated how the technical process was built on this idea. The zinc sulphide concentrates contain small quantities of selenium, chlorine and fluorine. The role of selenium in the process is described. Similarly, the behaviour of chlorine and fluorine in the roasting, sulphatizing and scrubbing units has been discussed. Finally, the recovery of purified mercury and selenium from the precipitates is described.

This paper presents the results of a production experiment evaluating the effect of the use of oxygen in the bessemer converter with respect to its relation to blowing time, amount of steel scrap or cold pig iron which can be melted and teeming temperatures of the molten steel. THE simplest and probably the most efficient and economical means for producing steel from molten pig iron is the bessemer converter. This process is essentially a mechanism for bringing oxygen into contact with the molten metal thereby oxidizing the elements silicon, manganese, and carbon. The source of oxygen is that contained in the air and is limited by that amount. In theory, there is an intermediate chemical reaction due to the mass action of iron and air which is represented by the equation: 2Fe + O2- = 2Fe0 The FeO then becomes the oxidizing agent and reacts with the silicon, manganese, and carbon to produce silicon dioxide (SiO,), manganese oxide (MnO), and carbon monoxide (CO), in the order mentioned. The balancing of the various chemical reactions shows that in the ordinary bessemer process more than sufficient oxygen is delivered to satisfy these reactions, which indicates that a further increase in the oxygen content of the air would serve no useful purpose. In spite of this reasoning, however, it will be demonstrated that when melting stelel scrap, commercially pure industrial oxygen introduced into the normal air blast will permit the melting of a larger proportion of steel scrap than is possible with air alone and also will increase the production rate by a substantial reduction in blowing time. It will also be shown that when melting cold pig iron, it is possible to melt up to twice as much pig iron with the use of oxygen as can be melted without added oxygen with a nominal increase in blowing time. At the plant where this study was made, oxygen is purchased from a nearby supplier and piped directly into the plant. It is supplied to the bessemer converter by being introduced directly into the blast line through an automatic control system which may be adjusted by the bessemer operator or "blower." Normally, iron is supplied by five blast furnaces to an open hearth shop containing twelve 165-ton capacity stationary furnaces and a bessemer converting shop having three 30-ton converters. The molten metal from the blast furnaces is allocated to one shop or the other in a manner to best provide for maximum production. At various times, it is desirable to direct the maximum amount of available blast furnace production to the open hearth shop. This has the effect of reducing the production of the bessemer shop. When this condition exists, it is desirable to supplement the reduced iron charge at the bessemer with steel scrap or cold pig iron to the maximum possible extent in order to maintain high total ingot production. This condition becomes aggravated when one of the blast furnaces is taken out of production for any repair job and particularly for extended periods such as when relining is necessary. The purpose of the investigation and experimentation with oxygen was to determine whether or not it would contribute to increased flexibility in the use of the raw materials, molten iron, steel scrap, and cold pig iron. In addition to the effect of oxygen on flexibility of operation, it was also necessary to determine the relation of its use to production rate or "blowing time," final finishing temperature of the steel or "teeming temperature," and steel quality.

The annealing behavior of a heavily cold-worked FeCo-V alloy has been studied at temperatures both above and below Tc, the critical temperature for ordering. It was found that re crystallization and grain growth can take place below Tc in the ordered state and that, in agreement with results for fcc alloys, order retards grain growth. The activation energy for pain growth is -55 kcal per mole in the disordered condition; it was not possible to assign a value to the activation energy for grain growth below Tc because the degree of order is changing rapidly over the temperature interval investigated. Precipitation of an fcc y phase was observed upon annealing the cold-worked alloy at temperatures of 675°C and below. SINCE it is known that diffusion constants are greatly affected by long-range order,' it is not unreasonable to anticipate that order will influence the diffusion-controlled phenomena of recrystallization and grain growth. In the course of a study of strain aging of ordering alloys around the composition Ni3Fe Vidoz, Lazarevic, and cahn2 noted that a disordered cold-worked alloy annealed at a temperature T1 just below Tc will order but not recrystallize; Tc is the critical temperature for order. The same alloy annealed at a temperature T2 just above Tc, or an alloy of different (nonordering) composition annealed at either T1 or T2, will recrystallize after equivalent amounts of cold work. Initially Selisskii and coworkers,3,4 who examined a series of cold-worked and annealed bcc Fe- Co alloys, reported that alloys forming the B2 FeCo super lattice could not be recrystallized below Tc. However in a later paper5 it was shown that FeCo ordered alloys could be recrystallized below Tc. Thus the first question to be answered by the present investigation was whether or not a heavily cold-worked Fe-Co-V alloy could be recrystallized below Tc. When it was found that the alloy would indeed re-crystallize below Tc, the influence of long-range order upon subsequent grain growth was studied. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The grain-growth measurements were made upon FeCo-2 pct V wire of 0.031 in. diam; the alloy was the same as that used in an earlier study of the mechanical properties of FeCO-v.6 The wire was produced by cold swageing and drawing a rod 0.125 in. diam that had been quenched into iced brine from 850°C to disorder the alloy; the initial grain size was 0.05 mm. Rates of grain browth were measured after isother-mally annealing the wire in the temperature range 675° to 825°C; T, is -720°C. Grain diameters were measured on the transverse cross section of the wires. The line-intercept method of determining the grain diameter was used; conventional light photomicrographs were taken when the grain size was greater than 10 . In this way the effect of repair materials on the amount of slag tapped would be found with a reasonable degree of accuracy. Ten heats were made for this study with careful attention to a uniform charge. The steel was the usual grade B and melting was carried out in a 3 1/2-ton top-charge Lectromelt furnace. Melting practice in all cases was the same-complete oxidation, with recarbonization by means of low-silicon pig iron.

Rates oj decarburization of levilated Fe-C droplets conlaining 5.5 to 0 pct C have been measured at 1660°C. Gas mixtures of 1, 10, and 100 pct 0, with helium diluenl were used at velocities of 12.5 and 62.5 cm per sec. Rates were independent of carbon concentration in the mell and in good agreement with the calculated rule of oxygen diffusion through the gas boundary layer. The effects of flow rale and total pressure are as predicled and the rates are approxitnalely 2.5 times those with CO2 as oxidant. The mass-transfer correlation used incorporaled the efject of natural convection as well as forced conrection. Graphile spheres are shown to oxidize at the same rate as Fe-C droplets under the same experimental codlions. It is concluded that, for high carbon concentrations in the melt, the rate of- decarburizalion is controlled wholly by the rate of gaseous diffusion. Rate measurements with pure CO, are reported for low carbon concentrations where CO bubbles nucleate within the droplet. Under these circumstances the decarburi-zation decreased with carbon concentration and it is proposed that carbon diffusion is significant in conlrolling the decnvburization rate. In an earlier paper1 decarburization rate measurements were reported for levitated Fe-C alloys at 1660°C but with CO2 as the oxidant. The decarburization rate was found to be independent of carbon concentration in the melt but slightly affected by total pressure. The authors were unable to explain the slight pressure effect but in all other respects the results were consistent with control by diffusion in the gas boundary layer. Subsequent work has been directed at finding the reason for the slight pressure effect and whether the kinetics with oxygen as oxidant parallel those with CO2. Recently Ito and Sano2 have shown that with water vapor-argon atmospheres the decarburization rate is gaseous diffusion controlled until an oxide film appears on the surface. In this work the melts were contained in crucibles. MASS TRANSFER IN THE GAS PHASE In the earlier analysis1 only forced-convection mass transfer was considered. Subsequent recognition of the existence of some free-convection mass transfer explained the observed small effect of total pressure on the decarburization rate. Steinberger and Treybal3 and Kinard, Manning, and Manning4 have developed correlations involving the linear addition of the contribution of radial diffusion, free and forced convection. Steinberger and Treybal&apos;s correlation was chosen as the most applicable to the present work since it correlated most of the data available in the literature and handled the low Reynolds number region exceptionally well. The correlation for (Gr&apos;Sc) < 108 is where Nu&apos; is the Nusselt number for mass transfer based upon the total surface of a sphere in an infinite medium, G&apos; is the mean Grashof number for mass transfer defined by Eq. [2], Sc is the Schmidt number (µ/pDAB)f, Re is the sphere Reynolds number (dpu,pf/µf), p is the viscosity of the gas (poise), p is the density of the gas (g cm-3), Dab is the binary diffusivity for the system A-B (sq cm sec-&apos;), dp is the sphere diameter (cm), u is the approach velocity of the gas (cm sec-I), and subscript f denotes the property value is computed at the film temperature Tf defined by Tf = +1/2(To + Tr) where To is the specimen temperature and T, is the approach gas temperature (oK). Natural convection occurs when inhomogeneities exist in gas density. These may be caused by concentration gradients, temperature gradients, or both. In the present work the temperature gradient between the sphere and the bulk gas was very large and in some cases, for example the runs with pure oxygen, the concentration gradient was also appreciable. COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion-equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control. For the present purpose a number of factors important to efficient heat liberation and recovery have been grouped as follows: 1—combustion, temperatures, and rates of heat liberation; 2—radiation, convection, and furnace and boiler configuration; 3—sponge ash, slag, and hard-bonded deposits; 4— low-temperature deposits and corrosion (cooling flue gas below dew point and air-pollution control); 5—the limitations of coal cleaning and boiler size and cost as related to fuel characteristics; 6—future possibilities and conclusions. The development of combustion apparatus for power boilers is progressing at a lively pace. There has been no letup in improvements in design of pulverized-coal-fired boilers, and there is a strong trend at present toward improving dry-bottom units. Spreader stokers with overfire jets and dust collectors as standard equipment are gaining favor. Less than 10 years in commercial use, cyclone burners are going into numerous installations here&apos; and abroad.&apos; Underfeed and traveling-grate stokers have long since been developed for heavy-duty operation, yet new developments in overfire jets and humidification of air blast have improved their performance. A water-cooled vibrating-grate stoker of German origin is being introduced into the United States and Canada." The primary objectives of an ideal coal combustion device are: capacity to burn the variety and sizes of coals likely to be economically available during the life of the unit; capacity to burn the coals automatically for a wide load range and rapid load fluctuations and to burn the coals completely to CO2, H2O, and SO2, which means without smoke and cinders, or carbon in the refuse; capacity to control and discharge all the ash in final granular form without ash adhesion to walls or tubes, and without flue dust; minimum furnace volume; minimum labor and maintenance; low initial and operating cost. Regardless of the method of burning, the gaseous products of coal combustion are N2, CO2, O2, H20, and SO?. By way of illustration, the coal analyses in Table I is assumed from an installation described by E. McCarthy.&apos; When coal is burned with 20 pct excess air (theoretical air, 9.23 lb per lb of coal), the quantities of combustion gas shown in Table II are produced. In addition, the gases carry particles of fly ash, unconsumed cinders, soot particles, and small but significant amounts of vaporized oxides and sulphates of sodium, potassium, lithium, phosghorous, iron, and other metals. In recent years, germanium, one of the rare metals found in coal, has been shown to oxidize and vaporize at combustion temperatures and to be concentrated by reconden-sation at lower temperatures." Pulverized coal and cyclone flames" have peak temperatures of 3000&apos; to 3500°F. Temperatures in fuel beds of large underfeed stokers reach maxima of 3000°F, sufficient to fuse almost any ash and to volatilize some of it. These peak temperatures are above the optimum necessary for rapid combustion, but they hasten heat transfer for ignition as well as boiler heat absorption. Furnace and gas temperatures increase with combustion air preheat. Low excess air has the same effect. Fine coal pulverization and highly turbulent combustion shorten the distance for fuel burnout, increase flame temperature, and speed up heat transfer. Rates of combustion of pulverized coal exceeding 200,000 Btu per cu ft per hr have been demonstrated in atmospheric gas-turbine combusters,

THE geophysical methods of exploration employed so extensively in mining and petroleum investigations are now being used in civil engineering. Requirements differ from those of mineral ex- ploration and therefore modified techniques have been developed. The civil engineer is primarily interested in the uppermost soil and rock strata. In highway engineering the materials affecting design and construction may be found within 15 or 20 ft of ground surface, and data on soils and rocks is seldom needed for more than a depth of 100 ft even for the heaviest structures.

IN spite of the great amount of operating experience and of studies directed toward elucidation of the interrelation of the several processes going on in the blast furnace, the present picture of its operation is based largely on indirect evidence and on speculation. The reason for this unsatisfactory situation is the extreme difficulty of making direct observations and significant measurements while the furnace is operating, and of translating laboratory experience to the conditions obtaining in the smelting process. Yet there are questions that can be investigated with some promise of a definitive answer; and it is the purpose of the present paper to set forth some of these questions, as a basis for discussion, which may, it is hoped, lead to active work on some of them. In order to provide a starting point for this discussion, some views held tentatively by the writer are outlined, along with a certain amount of evidence gathered from operating records and interpreted on the basis of the ideas expressed. These opinions may prove not to be pertinent, and may well not be in accord with the opinions of others; they have been included to encourage others to do likewise and on purpose to provoke informal discussion. In this way it should be possible to transcend the limitations of formal papers; to bring forth suggestions of new hypotheses or new methods of investigation; and to promote better understanding between investigators and operators in this difficult field. The statements made express the present views of one physical chemist who is not too familiar with all the difficulties of maintaining these enormous reaction vessels in reasonably smooth and economical operation; who, however, is persuaded that some of these difficulties would be less formidable if surer knowledge of the several interrelated and concurrent processes were available and made use of. For these difficulties arise largely, it is believed, from variation in conditions which the operator must meet as best be can, and should lessen as these conditions can be brought under control so that they are either made substantially constant or the variations are neutralized by compensating methods. A. VARIATION IN BURDEN AND IN MIXING OF CHARGE To the scientific investigator, who aims to control the conditions of experiment and to limit the number of variable factors, the most perplexing aspect of the blast-furnace process is that nothing seems to remain constant for long. Variations of burden seem to be unnecessarily frequent; and, even if the charge were constant from hour to hour, its constituents usually are not mixed as intimately as they might well be. SEVERAL attempts have been made to account for the fact that grains in a fully recrystallized metal will coarsen on annealing Two fundamentally different hypotheses have been advanced; with several variations of each. One school considers that the cause of grain growth is the surface energy of the grain boundary The theory of Jeffries1 that grain size and grain size contrast control growth is an example The second school considers the primary cause to be a difference in the lattice energy on either side of the grain boundary The more perfect grains are considered to grow at the expense of their less perfect neighbors, with a decrease in free energy, and a consequent increase in the stability of the system. Burgers2 presents the case for the strain or lattice imperfection theory of grain growth quite completely The latter theory is attractive, since there is no doubt that differences in lattice energy or lattice perfection can cause grain boundary migration A recrystallization nucleus grows for this reason as was beautifully demonstrated by van Arkel and Ploos van Amstel3 Although it is generally stated that grain growth does not precede recrystallization, several workers4,5 have shown that small strains may induce a single crystal in an aggregate to grow, or at least may cause some&apos; grain boundary migration The origin and nature of the imperfections that are considered to be responsible for normal grain growth have never been clearly described, but it is generally agreed that they are a consequence of the difficulty of atomic reorientation in the solid state, and that they do not seriously differ from the type of imperfection that-can be introduced by mechanical deformation An object of the present work was to determine whether the introduction of mechanical deformation would cause grain growth in a specimen which would not otherwise show it under the conditions used It was also planned to determine the effect of such deformation the rate of growth in a specimen which would show - growth in the unstrained condition Recently Maddigan and Blank6 have indicated that slightly strained specimens of alpha brass can undergo considerable growth prior to recrystallization if annealed at low temperatures French7 has reported that at deformations less than 17 pct it is very difficult to detect the beginning of recrystallization in the same material. One session of the annual meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers-the first since this society became a Founder society with representation on the Board of the United Engineering Society-was held on Jan. 17, 1917, in the Engineering Societies&apos; Building. Mr. Charles F. Rand, Past-President of this Institute, and President of the United Engineering Society, welcomed the new Founder society in the following words: "As one who has looked forward very earnestly to this clay, and who has made a modest effort in favor of the new arrangements, it is a peculiar satisfaction to be the representative of the Trustees of the United Engineering Society and to welcome you on the occasion of your first meeting in this building in which you now own&apos; a quarter interest. "&apos;As this is your annual meeting, I cannot take your time for extended remarks, yet it seems proper that I should call attention to a few facts respecting the United Engineering Society, with which you are now identified. "The United Engineering Society exists for the purpose of holding the legal title to certain of the property of the societies of Civil, Mining, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and to act for them in certain matters. "The value of its property, including real estate, the Library and the Reserve and Endowment funds, exceeds two million dollars, all free and clear. "The total membership of the four Founder societies is 29,000 and the membership of associate societies is 23,000, making a grand total of 52,000 engineers who now have headquarters in this building.

Experiments revealed that quartz could not be floated in conductivity water at any pH with a long-chained sulfonate as collector. Various cations, Fe+++, Al+++, Pb++, Mn++, Mg++, Ca++, are shown to function as activators when the pH is such that the cation hydrolyzes. As the solubility product of the various cation-sulfonates was exceeded at the concentrations involved, precipitated cation-hydroxy-sulfonates, e.g. Fe (RSO3)2OH must be functioning as the collector in these systems. A number of interesting and important phenomena were revealed during a study of the response of beryl to sulfonate flotation.&apos; Perhaps the most important observation is the effect of various cations on flotation response. Experiments showed that in the vicinity of pH 3.0, about three ppm Fe+++ increased recovery of leached beryl from about 60 pct to 100 pct, whereas about four ppm Ca+ + reduced the recovery from 60 pct to 2 pct. With the exception of ferric iron, all of the other cations investigated reduced flotation recoveries drastically at this pH. As postulated in the paper Sulfonate Flotation of Beryl,&apos; even with low concentrations of polyvalent cations and sulfonate (on the order of one ppm), cation-sulfonates are precipitated immediately in solution. That is, blueish-white clouds were noted to form after given additions of salts to known solutions of sulfonate. Furthermore, it was also shown that one-hundred-fold more ferric iron than necessary to form the precipitated cloud had to be added to effect complete flotation. In other words, some form of solid ferric sulfonate was found to function as the collector in these systems. The form of the compound was suggested to be Fe(RCO3)2OH and that bonding to the surface occurs through the hydrogen of the hy-droxyl. As the form of this compound was shown to be dependent on the extent of hydrolysis of ferric iron, it is to be expected that ferric iron will be unique in some pH region. Further, if the presence of hydroxyl in the neutral precipitated compound is of primary importance, then other cations should function similarly but at different values of pH, since they will hydrolyze at different concentrations of hydroxyl ion. To determine whether the premise of hydrolysis is correct, the study was extended to quartz systems in the presence of various cations at various values of pH. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHOD Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate was chosen as the collector for the experimental work. The reagent, sup plied as a courtesy sample by the Shell Chemical Co., has the following physical properties: Physical form Solid — Finely ground Sulfonate content, pct wt 95 to 97 Molecular Weight 450 to 470 Number of carbon atoms in hydrocarbon chain 25 to 30 Melting Point, OF 250 to 260 Solubility Soluble in water with gel formation at concentrations higher than 25 pct by weight sulfonate This particular reagent was chosen because of its high active sulfonate content, long-chain length, and solid form. With the exception of the frother and sulfonate, all other chemicals were of reagent grade quality. Conductivity water was used in the experimental work. This water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, had an average measured conductivity of one micromho. Experiments were conducted at room temperature in a small glass flotation cell with the following procedure: 1) A redetermined amount of water and salt solution (e.g. CaC12 . 2H2O) were combined and the pH adjusted to a given value. 2) A given amount of sulfonate was added so that final solution volume was 130 cc. 3) One drop of Dow 250 frother was added. 4) Five g of quartz were added and the system conditioned for five minutes. 5) The pH of the system was measured (termed flotation pH).

INTRODUCTION Scope of Work Tins paper represents the results of an investigation of the presence, amounts, and degree of concentration of heavy minerals found in the pulp of the phosphate flotation plant at Peace Valley, Fla., which is operated by the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation of Chicago. In this paper, heavy minerals are those, excepting collophane, that sink in acetylene tetrabromide with a specific gravity of 2.95. Percentages of heavy minerals at several points of the flowsheet and the species of minerals have been determined. Some information as to the screen size of the minerals has been acquired. Previous Work All previous published reports or investigations of the deposits of heavy minerals in Florida have been limited to present beach sands. The mining operations conducted by the Humphreys Gold Corp. about seven miles east of Jacksonville along an ancient shore line have been described in trade journals, but descriptions of the minerals have been lacking. Commercial grades of ilmenite, zircon, and rutile are produced on a large scale. Papers have been published on heavy minerals found on the Florida beaches.I-6 Location "International&apos;s" Peace Valley flotation plant is in south-central Polk County, Fla. about eight miles south of Bartow and along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The mine surrounds the plant and includes about 1500 acres of the phosphatic lands in this area. GEOLOGY General Setting All of the rock underlying the area is almost horizontal. The oldest bed exposed is part of the Hawthorn phosphatic limestone of Miocene age. This outcrops in the stream bed of the Peace River about one mile east of the plant. Elsewhere the Hawthorn is covered except where it has been exposed by mining operations. The Bone Valley formation of Pliocene age, which is the phosphatic stratum extensively mined in this area, unconformably overlies the Hawthorn. Resting unconformably upon the Bone Valley formation are Pleistocene (?) terrace deposits of unconsolidated quartz sand which comprise the overburden of the phosphate ore. Stratigraphy Hawthorn formation: "Bedrock" of the pebble phosphate deposits is a cream to white colored, sandy, dense limestone containing varying amounts of small grains and nodules of collophane. Haulage in tunneling operations generally has been done with electric locomotives. As a rule, on short hauls the source of electricity is a storage battery mounted on the locomotive, which, of course, must be removed and recharged periodically. Where the distance from the recharging point to the tunnel face is very long, and where loads are heavy, trolley-driven locomotives are used. Diesel engines have been used in mining and tunneling operations in Europe for a number of years. The recent reports of studies in Belgium1 and by the Bureau of Mines in this country2-4 have indicated the potentialities of this form of power for haulage, mucking, bulldozing and many other underground operations. The hazards attending the use of Diesel engines in more or less closed spaces have long been known. The exhaust constituents that may create a harmful or objectionable environment are carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulphur, carbon dioxide, aldehydes and smoke. Lack of precise information regarding the concentration of these gases and the ventilation requirements to reduce them to safe levels has to some extent suppressed their general acceptance in tunneling and mining work. Not until the work of the Bureau of Mines referred to above, and certain experience gained in the construction of the Delaware Aqueduct, ‡ has there been available the requisite information regarding the conditions under which their use may be permitted. This paper concerns itself with the successful operation of Diesel engines underground in the construction of certain parts of the Delaware Aqueduct, and describes the conditions under which Diesel engines have been found to operate with a minimum production of noxious gases. The test data reported were obtained during the operation of Diesel engines over a period of two years.* Studies by the New York State Department or Labor Exhaustive tests were made by the Division of Industrial Hygiene, of the composition of the exhaust gases given off by a Diesel engine mounted on a test block. The Mother Lode district in California is probably better known as the land of Bret Harte and Mark Twain than as a gold-producing district, although in this respect it holds an important place. The history of quartz mining on the Mother Lode dates back to the &apos;50s, when, after the first fever of the gold rush, men began to look for something more permanent, if not more lucrative, than the placers. Since that time, the discoveries, shutdowns, and reopenings of the many mines, together with the varying fortunes of their numerous operators, constitute an interesting chapter in California history, but one too long to include in a description of mining methods. The district is well situated, so far as physical conditions are concerned. The Mother Lode extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, about half way between the crest and the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys, the country traversed consisting of low rolling hills—typical foot-hills. The elevation varies from 1000 to 1800 ft. and the climate is most desirable. There is an abundance of water, timber is easily obtained from the higher foot-hills a few miles east, and cheap hydro-electric power is generated practically on the Lode. These natural conditions are conducive to low costs in mining and have been the deciding factor in allowing profitable exploitation of the comparatively low-grade orebodies. Transportation facilities are not bad. Five branch railroads, from the main trunk lines in the valley, tap the district at intervals of from 10 to 30 miles, and the roads connecting these are fairly good for trucking purposes. Labor is made up of several nationalities, the principal ones being American, Spanish, Jugo-Slav, Italian, and Mexican. There were few Mexicans on the Lode prior to 1919, but the shortage of labor, experienced generally by the mining camps of the country in the years following the war, made necessary the hiring of some. The percentage of Mexican labor rapidly increased in 1920 and for a year or so thereafter, but it has now diminished until at most of the mines only a few Mexicans are working. Of the different nationalities, Americans are the most efficient and Mexicans the least.

THE mining press, as well as certain federal and state bulletins, refer from tine to time to. the relative hazards that attach to loading bituminous coal by hand when compared with the so-called "mechanical loading" process. Much of the coal coming under the head. of hand-loaded coal is won in part by the use of machinery; the coal-cutting machine is in general use, the electric power drill employed to a lesser extent. Therefore it may be said that the principal difference in the process employed, mechanical loading versus hand loading, lies in the fact that some type of loading machine is employed in the mechanical loading process to lift the coal from the face of the room, place or entry, after it is mined, placing it in the pit cars for transport to the tipple. It is a common practice to compute accident records on the basis of tons mined per fatal and per nonfatal accident, disregarding the fact that it is possible to produce by the aid of coal-loading machines the same daily, monthly and annual tonnage with a much smaller force than is required where the coal is all shoveled by hand. Inasmuch as the men who are released by the substitution of machinery for hand labor must find employment elsewhere, suffering some measure of hazard in their new occupation, we are of the opinion that the true relative hazard that attaches to the processes of mechanical loading and hand loading can be determined only by using as the basis of comparison "man shifts worked" or "hours of exposure" experienced per accident. The Union Pacific Coal Co., beginning with the year 1929, undertook to maintain a true record of man shifts worked per compensable accident, giving equal weight to fatal and nonfatal accidents. Accidents lacking sufficient severity to come under the compensable terms of the Workmen&apos;s Compensation Act were not included in the compilation, the Act providing that "no compensation, except the expense of medical attention, shall be allowed for the first seven (7) days of disability, unless the incapacity runs beyond the period of twenty-one (21) days,&apos; in which case the compensation shall run from the time of the injury."
