SALT bodies in the form of rolls, horses (sometimes called horsebacks), folds, wants and pinches1 have been encountered while driving entries and mining out rooms during the development of the potash mines in New Mexico. Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

THE loading of bituminous coal mechan¬ically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous pro¬duction in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past i6 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all¬time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recognized many years before the mechanical loader was introduced, because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in., and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without mechanical cleaning on the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely intro¬duced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problems have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expendi¬tures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging and improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. LARGE IMPURITIES The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher. WHEN the Board of Directors of the Institute in June 1931 approved the formation of the Committee on Eastern Magnetite and its then membership of eleven, little did any of those concerned envision that twelve years later the annual Committee luncheon would attract 34, and the technical session, jointly with the Iron and Steel Division, more than 70. Yet that was exactly what happened during the February meeting just passed. And what is more important, some members of the Committee are now predicting that by 1944 over 10 per cent of the iron ore produced in the United States will come from these Eastern Magnetite properties. Chairman Crockett, in opening the meeting, advised that due to the serious illness of Meredith E. Johnson, State Geologist of New Jersey, Mr. Johnson would be unable to brief his scheduled paper, which would therefore be reserved for a later date.

A purely geomentrical analysis based on oriented-growth relationships is presented to derive annealing-texture orientations in bcc metals from their- known deformation textures. The analysis takes as its starting point a description of- the bcc deformation texture and follows previous work on fcc metals in considering pvobable nurleation sites for recrystallization and the textural limitations on grains growing into a deformed matrix. The analy-sis accounts for the prominent and the minor coinponents of the annealing textures formed from two the deformation textures and can account for the ob-sem:ed temperature dependence of the annealing texture of bcc metals. THERE have been a number of investigations of annealing textures in bcc metals but few attempts to relate these textures to the deformation textures. This has been largely due to the lack of definition of both annealing and deformation textures, neither of which shows sharply defined orientations. It is, however, necessary to get a better understanding of primary recrystallization textures in bcc metals in view of increasingly exacting demands upon the quality of steel sheet for drawing purposes and as a necessary step towards the control of textures through processing. An analysis is presented here which relates annealing textures to deformation texture, by a purely geometrical method. This takes as its basis the oriented-growth theory of recrystallization and makes some reasonable assumptions regarding the make-up of bcc deformation textures and the limitations on growth relationships in bcc metals. Detailed information on this latter point is not available at the present time, and the present analysis may need to be streamlined or extended when such information is at hand. It is felt, however, that despite these limitations the analysis provides useful results and a valuable aid towards understanding the effect of processing variables. 1) BCC ROLLING TEXTURES Different workers have used a variety of descriptions for the texture developed in bcc metals by rolling. For the present purpose it will be assumed that two different deformation textures can be obtained: 1) a texture containing a major (112)[li0] component and a minor (001)[1i0] component for which increasing deformation causes the (001)[li0] component to increase at the expense of the (112)[li0] component, as suggested by Dillamore and ~oberts' (this is the texture predicted to arise starting from randomly oriented material); 2) a t~xture containing the above components and (111)[110] and (ii1)[112] components. A very limited development has been made of the coal-fields of this Territory. This is to be accounted for by the fact that a number of the coal-fields lack railroad transportation, by the distance of other fields from the consumers (due to restricted settlements), and finally by the poorer quality of a number of coals which have been mined as compared to others which can be economically imported into the Territory. The consumption of coal in Utah during 1886, outside of that used by the railway companies, was: Tons. DRILLING in the Oligocene potash basin of Alsace prior to 1927 had shown important differences of level in the salt beds thus encountered. To explain this a somewhat unsatisfactory hypothesis of faulting had been advanced. During the latter part of 1926 and the beginning of 1927- our firm was engaged by two organizations for the purpose of trying to supplement, by an electrical survey, the geological data thus far collected. As a re-sult of this exploration it was possible to affirm that salt dome structures were present in the Oligocene basin of the Upper Rhine, something heretofore absolutely unknown in that region. Two salt domes were actually outlined, one, near Meyenheim, was made the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences, by G. Friedel2; the other, near Hettenschlag, was briefly dis-cussed by C. and M. Schlumberger3 before the same academy. The purpose of this paper is to indicate the strati-graphic and structural conditions of the area where these salt domes were found; to discuss the results of the electrical survey which led to the location of the domes, and indicate the new geological outlook which such a discovery suggests.

THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. Speech advocating a new law of the sea-the "common heritage of mankind." The 3rd Law of the Sea (L0S) Conference was held in Caracas in mid-1974, and a fourth UN conference, scheduled for mid-March in Geneva, will once again attempt to produce a cohesive LOS Convention to take up where the 1958 Geneva Convention left off. The 1958 Convention specified coastal state resource rights on a continental shelf out to a water depth of 200 m-a supposed technological limitation at the time. But the surge of offshore petroleum drilling and the advent of the nodule resource have long since exploded beyond the 200-m limit.

Of the elements found in iron and steel, none has attracted more attention than phosphorus. It is considered the great enemy of the steel manufacturer-, and the chief aim has been and is to keep it out by using pure crude material, or when once in, to eliminate it or counteract its effect. A reconnaissance of the chrome and manganesel ore deposits of Cuba was made in the spring of 1918 by Albert Burch, representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the writer, representing the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the United States Government as to the location, character, size, and availability of the Cuban deposits of the ores of these important steel-alloy metals. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the Island. Mr. George A. Wright, of Baracoa, Cuba, a minirng engineer especially familiar with the chromite deposits of Oriente Province, was a member of the party from Feb. 25 to Mar. 20. It was possible to visit most of the chrome-ore deposits that seemed to be of promise, but there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Furthermore, no attempt was made to examine the extensive chromiferous iron-ore deposits of the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas districts, as these deposits cannot be regarded as sources of chromium except indirectly. At the close of the field work the essential data concerning the quantity and quality of ore probably available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, in the event of the continuation of the European war, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve, were furnished to such Government bureaus as were interested, including the Shipping Board and the War lndustries Board, and as soon as chemical analyses of the chrome ores could be obtained, a press bulletin on the subject was published by the Geological Survey. In the present paper the engineering data and tonnage estimates contained in the unpublished notes of Mr. Burch have been freely used, and their helpfulness is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Many thanks are due Senor Montoulieu and Mr. Wright for their valuable work in the field; to the officials of the Spanish American Iron Co. and of the various other companies; and to individuals holding chromite claims, for courteously facilitating the work of the party.

ONE of the postwar problems posed for mineral engineering educators is the desire of some mature student veterans to finish their college education under the G. I. Bill of Rights as quickly as possible, a desire that is quite understandable. Not only have they lost several years of education, which they wish to make up as quickly as possible, but many are married and have families and want to become productive as soon as possible in order to support their families properly. The obvious solution to this problem, if it really is serious, would appear to be a continuation of the wartime Accelerated Program, as it was carried on in most colleges and universities. As a matter of fact some schools are known to have continued their wartime programs in one or another form. To ascertain just what our mineral engineering schools generally are doing to meet this postwar problem, last April a questionnaire was sent to administrative officers at colleges and universities

MINING of the red iron ores of the Birmingham district has been carried on energetically during the past 50, years, and their development has created a large iron and steel manufacturing, center, the only important one in the South. The district produces approximately 10 per cent. of all the iron ore of the United States (80 per cent. of the Alabama ore mined is red ore) ; also, 43 of the 419 blast furnaces of the country are in the district tributary to Birmingham. The rapid growth of the district has been made possible through investigations that resulted in radical changes in furnace practice, and a still greater impetus will come from the study of the low-grade, high-silica ores, as a result of which they will be made amenable to treatment by concentration. Mining practice in this district has been comparatively simple because of the occurrence of the ore; but with the-rapid extension of the work-ings and the disturbed condition of the ore bed at some distance from the outcrop, more difficult conditions are encountered and the tendency is toward worse rather than better conditions. Should the high-silica ores of the lower bench of the Big Seam become available through beneficiation, mining practice will have to be modified to meet the new conditions, which will be rendered more difficult by the increased weight of cover that will exist at considerable distances from the outcrop. Support of workings will require greater attention and the efficient and economical operation of the mines will depend largely on the successful solution of the problems of working-and handling the ore.

I doubt if many of our engineers know of the existence of coalfields extending over hundreds of miles of territory bordering on and lying contiguous to the Rio Grande River in Mexico. Essential as these facts are to those contemplating the starting of industrial works along our frontier, 1 have not been able to learn that any surveys or examinations have been made of these deposits, arid I trust the preliminary and unofficial investigations lately made by myself may be found of interest, especially to those of our members whose experience has been with poor fuel, or in districts remote from railway facilities. While it is true that Northern Mexico is generally bare of charcoal-making timber, yet no greater mistake can be made than to condemn the light, quick-growing woods found in profusion, and which cannot be excelled in flame or heat-pruducing qualities for boilers, reverberatory furnaces, or hearths. No country could be surer of a full supply of wood if wise legislation in regard to irrigation and preservation of young timber were adopted and enforced, but the beneficiation of the low-grade ores of Mexico demands a more dense fuel for furnace work, and, fortunately for metallurgists, who will hereafter make this frontier a base of operations, there have been disclosed, near the surface, seemingly inexhaustible beds of semi-anthracite and bituminous coals. No extensive openings have as yet been made, and my own workings at the Cedral mines are all that can yet be said to prove the quantity and quality of the coal, other openings furnishing only corroborative evidence. Our location (one hundred and ten miles west of the Rio Grande River) is on the western line of the depository basin, as it has existed since the period of activity along the volcanic line. The region farther inland I have not examined, but the elevations, as a rule, are much greater, though from the nature of the formation, they are not necessarily barren ground. Beginning at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains (location of the Cedral mines), we find very interesting breaks in the foot-hills, disclosing the stratified rocks from the volcanic centres to the valleys.

(written discussion*)..-The mode of intercrystalline oxidation which the authors" have so well observed and described is characteristic of nickel that has been exposed' to: the action of an oxidizing atmosphere at higher temperatures, such as, those at which; it is annealed or heated for rolling or forging. Oxidation under such conditions proceeds inward from the surface along the, crystal boundaries' producing a net-work, probably of oxide; which causes a very brittle condition of this surface material. This, in turn, generally results in surface cracking and checking during further, rolling and a defective sheet or other product is produced. An example of this is shown in Fig. 2, which shows the surface, of a badly surface-cracked sheet of nickel produced by incorrect heating con-ditions. A cross-section of this sheet etched with nitric acid is shown in Fig. 1, which reveals the intercrystalline oxidation network adjacent to both surfaces.These layers are so brittle that it is not possible to deform them by rolling without severe cracking along these lines or, planes of weakness. The best, and possibly only, remedy for this condition lies in its prevention by the maintenance of a neutral soft flame for heating and annealing nickel during the entire course of its manufacture. I should like to suggest that, those making microscopic investigations of nickel and nickel-rich alloys try the use of acetic-acid .solutions of nitric acid for etching these metals rather than aqueous solutions, of nitric acid. I have found that a solution containing 50 per cent. nitric acid, from 25-45 -per. cent. acetic acid, and from 25-5 per cent. water gives excellent results with. Wrought and cast nickel and Morsel metal and superior results to those obtained with nitric acid, alone. The acetic. acid seems to inhibit the passivity that nickel often assumes toward nitric acid and much more uniform etching may, be obtained. The proportions of nitric and acetic, acid may be varied somewhat from those given without mate-rially altering the quality of the etching, although without any distinct improvement in it.

Anthracite coals have been divided into three groups: (I) meta-anthracite, a high-carbon coal that is usually very slow to kindle and difficult to burn, at least on conventional equipment; (2) anthracite, a high-carbon low-volatile coal of widely accepted value as both a domestic and industrial fuel; and (3) semianthracite, a coal lying between anthracite and bituminous coal in carbon and volatile content, and also, generally speaking, in burning characteristics. Anthracite Groupings The technical differentiation between these groups, as defined by the A.S.A.-A.S.T.M. Sectional Committee on the Classification of Coals, is as shown in Table I. Tables 2 and 3 show typical analyses of anthracites and semianthracites and Figs. I to 3 show graphically the range of analytical samples. Table 4 shows the commercial sizes of coals. Meta-anthracite and Graphitic Anthracite Typical analyses from virtually every field in the United States indicate that there are few if any extensive deposits of meta-anthracite. Some of the anthracites of Rhode Island contain almost negligible quantities of volatile and would thus fall into the meta-anthracite grouping on a basis of analyses alone. However, their other characteristics indicate that it is doubtful whether they should be considered as fuels at all, but rather as graphite. In fact, this material is being mined for use as foundry facings and furnace linings.4 A typical analysis of Fenners Lodge graphite,4 from Rhode Island, is: graphitic carbon, 55.9 per cent; silica (ash), 40.6; sulphur, 1.6; moisture, 1.9; volatile, o. Other Rhode Island coals possess percentages of volatile that would throw them into the normal anthracite rather than the meta-anthracite class. However, this "volatile" is nearly all noncombustible,3,4 being composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and inert gases, therefore its definition as volatile is open to discussion, leaving the exact classification of the fuel a moot question. One factor is certain, Rhode Island coal is so different from nor-mal anthracite in both analysis and burning characteristics that it should have a

Drilling activity in California during 1939 decreased approximately 15 per cent from that of the previous year. New reserve discoveries were the lowest in many years, but extensions, development of deeper sands, and reappraisals, indicated enough new potential to more than equal 1939 withdrawals of about 223,644,000 barrels. On June 1 a new uniform method of allocation was adopted, which had the immediate effect of reducing production, so that approximately 6,000,000 bbl. of crude were withdrawn from storage during the year. Market demand averaged 628,845 bbl. per day as compared with a daily production of 612,945 barrels. The rate of drilling was slow during the first five months because of the unfavorable storage situation. Subsequent to the adoption of the new uniform method of allocation on June 1, drilling was speeded up and continued at a rapid rate throughout the remainder of the year. As a result of prospecting, four new fields were discovered and seven fields were measurably extended. All of the new discoveries were made in the San Joaquin Valley. Statistics of production and development arc given in Fig. 1 and Tables 1 to 3. New Discoveries Coalinga-Northeast.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation discovered a second Eocene shore-line field north of the Coalinga Nose when it brought in well S.P.L. 7-17 in sec. 17-19-16, flowing 4230 bbl. of 32.4" gravity oil and 14,200,000 cu. ft. of gas at a depth of 8237 ft., from the "Gatchell" sand of Eocene age. This field, 2 miles north of the Coalinga Nose field, is considered to be a separate structure because it has a gas cap and a lower water table. The structure is a broad, gentle anticlinal nose probably separated from the southerly Coalinga Nose field by a shallow syncline. Production is sealed updip by the pinching out of oil sands. The average sand thickness is approximately 200 ft., the top 75 ft. containing mainly gas. The sand has an average permeability of 1000 millidarcys and an average porosity of 25 per cent. The productivc area of the field is estimated to be between 1200 and 1500 acres.

THE fact is-notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter production of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there. been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. New reserve discoveries were the lowest in many years, but extensions, development of deeper sands, and reappraisals, indicated enough new potential to more than equal 1939 withdrawals of about 223,644,000 barrels. On June 1 a new uniform method of allocation was adopted, which had the immediate effect of reducing production, so that approximately 6,000,000 bbl. of crude were withdrawn from storage during the year. Market demand averaged 628,845 bbl. per day as compared with a daily production of 612,945 barrels. The rate of drilling was slow during the first five months because of the unfavorable storage situation. Subsequent to the adoption of the new uniform method of allocation on June 1, drilling was speeded up and continued at a rapid rate throughout the remainder of the year. As a result of prospecting, four new fields were discovered and seven fields were measurably extended. All of the new discoveries were made in the San Joaquin Valley. Statistics of production and development arc given in Fig. 1 and Tables 1 to 3. New Discoveries Coalinga-Northeast.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation discovered a second Eocene shore-line field north of the Coalinga Nose when it brought in well S.P.L. 7-17 in sec. 17-19-16, flowing 4230 bbl. of 32.4" gravity oil and 14,200,000 cu. ft. of gas at a depth of 8237 ft., from the "Gatchell" sand of Eocene age. This field, 2 miles north of the Coalinga Nose field, is considered to be a separate structure because it has a gas cap and a lower water table. The structure is a broad, gentle anticlinal nose probably separated from the southerly Coalinga Nose field by a shallow syncline. Production is sealed updip by the pinching out of oil sands. The average sand thickness is approximately 200 ft., the top 75 ft. containing mainly gas. The sand has an average permeability of 1000 millidarcys and an average porosity of 25 per cent. The productivc area of the field is estimated to be between 1200 and 1500 acres.
