THE heats of formation of the tellurides of cadmium, indium, tin, and lead have been measured as a continuation of research on the thermodynamic properties of compounds of tellurim.' The tellurides of these metals were selected with a view to examining the relation between the heat of formation and the position of the metal in the periodic system. The elements cadmium, indium, and tin are in the same period and tin and lead are in the same group of the periodic system. The tellurides of indium are of special interest because four compounds, In2Te, InTe, In2Te3, and InzTe5, occur in this system. The available information on the heats of formation of the compounds investigated consists of values for CdTe, SnTe, and PbTe derived from electromotive-force measurements,J a value for CdTe obtained by tin solution alorimetr, and values for InTe and In2Te3 determined by combustion calorimetry.5 These values, however, refer to various temperatures ranging from 273' to 673°K and some of the reported error limits are large. Liquid metal solution calorime-try may be expected to yield more accurate values for the heats of formation than electromotive-force measurements or combustion calorimetry. The heats of fusion and the melting points of the compounds InTe and In,Te3 were determined in a constant-temperature gradient calorimeter. No published information appears to be available on the heat of fusion of these compounds. The results reported here give an indication of the degree of order in the solid compounds at the melting point. 1) MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Materials. Samples of the compounds SnTe and PbTe were obtained from the Westinghouse Research Laboratories and samples of the compound InTe from Lincoln Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Tech- nology. Additional samples of the compounds InTe, SnTe, and PbTe and samples of CdTe, In2Te, In2Te3, and In,Tes were prepared from 99.995 pct Cd (Baker Chemical CO.), 99.999+ pct In (American Smelting and Refining Co.), 99.99 pct Sn (Baker Chemical Co.), 99.999+ pct Pb (Fisher Scientific Co.), and 99.999+ pct Te (American Smelting and Refining Co.). Stoichiometric amounts of the component elements were melted in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes. The melts were held at approximately 100°C above the liquidus for about 16 hr and shaken repeatedly. The melts of the compounds In2Te and InzTe5, which form by peritectic reactions, were quenched into iced water. The melts of the other compounds, which have congruent melting points, were slowly cooled to room temperature. The samples were then annealed for 5 days at approximately 50°C below their respective solidus temperatures. Metallographic examination did not reveal any evidence of second phases or segregation. At least two batches of each compound were prepared. Samples from each batch were used in determining the heats of formation and, in the cases of InTe and In,Te3, the heats of fusion. The Heats of Formation. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds were measured by metal solution calorimetry with liquid bismuth at 623" as solvent. In this technique, the heat of formation is determined from the measured heat effects on dissolution of the compound and of a mechanical mixture of the component elements. The difference between these heat effects adjusted for changes in the composition of the bath gives the heat of formation at the temperature from which the samples are added to the bath (273°K). The experimental technique and method of calculation have been described in detail elsewhere.= It should be emphasized that the reported heats of formation depend on the thermodynamic data used in calculating the heat effects for the calibration additions. In the present investigation, the calorimeter was calibrated by adding pure bismuth at 273°K to the bismuth bath at 623°K. The reported heats of formation are based on a value of 4.96 kcal per g-atom for the difference in the heat contents of bismuth at 623" and 273". If a new value for this quantity becomes available, the reported results may be adjusted in direct proportion. The concentration of solute in the bath at the end of a calorimetric run did not exceed 1.7 at. pct and was usually less. In this range, the heat effect on dissolution of the solute was a linear function of the concentration of solute. In determining the heats of formation of the compounds in the system In-Te, a few runs were carried out in which two neighboring compounds such as InTe and In,Te3 and the corresponding mechanical mixtures of the components were added to the calorimeter. Most technical and statistical data published on pyrophyllite relating to production figures, uses, markets and sales, have in the past traditionally linked the mineral with talc and soapstone. This is due to several common superficial physical properties resulting in substitute uses and applications. However, these minerals are not similar in chemical composition and do not generally occur in a similar geological environment. Pyrophyllite now stands on its own in the marketplace-particularly in ceramic applications-due to the combination of excellent heat shock and creep resistance properties of the mineral. The increase in pyrophyllite use in the field of ceramics indicates the continuing realization of these marked unique properties. Several new fields of ceramic applications, previously the preserve of high-alumina materials, have been developed on the intrinsic properties of pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite is an aluminum silicate with the molecular formula of AI2O34SiO2H2O. It would be more appropriate to group pyrophyllite with such materials as kyanite, diaspore, andalusite, and certain high-alumina clays in relation to its general applications (Stuckey, 1928). These materials all have good beat shock resistance properties at high temperatures and are widely used for the manufacture of refractories. For those reasons they are interchangeable in some applications. Pyrophyllite also has many uses in nonceramic applications, the most important to date being as a substitute for talc in fillers. The major pyrophyllite mining operations are located in the US, Japan, Korea, Canada, and Australia, where the mineral is widely used as a raw material for general ceramic, mineral filler, and dilutant applications. Commercial Applications Pyrophyllite was first used in the last century for lining stoves and fireplaces, and also in the carving and polishing of ornamental objects. The rise in industrial demand for new products and applications resulted in the introduction of pyrophyllite as an alternative, mainly for talc and soapstone. Industrial filler applications followed for paint, paper, cosmetics, rubber, pesticides, crayons and pencils, and bleaching soap. The first use of pyrophyllite in ceramic applications was prior to World War II, in the manufacture of ceramic cladding tiles in the US. This was followed by the production of kiln furniture refractories and whiteware when pyrophyllite was offered by suppliers in North Carolina as an alternative to some local clays. The largest tonnages of pyrophyllite used today are in refractory linings in steel ladles in Japan, as seen in Table 1. The consumption of pyrophyllite in Japan is second only to clay and chamotte among refractory raw materials used. Recently this technology has been adopted in Australia. Japanese and Australian practice has resulted in appreciable technical and economic benefits, particularly when pyrophyllite is used in combination with zircon. The potential growth for this application is substantial if US and European steelmakers follow. Investigation and research into the properties of pyrophyllite determined the following main advantages of pyrophyllite-based ceramics: high corrosion resistance for molten iron, steel, and slags; good heat shock resistance; good indices of deformation under load and hot creep resistance (refractories); and increase in mechanical strength of whiteware products promoted by a better distribution of mullite in finished products (also obtained at lower firing temperatures than normally required in production of triaxial ceramics). Sulfur is a nonmetallic element widely distributed in nature. It constitutes 0.06% of the earth's crust but only a very small portion occurs in sufficiently concentrated amounts to justify mining. Sulfur occurs in practically all animal and plant life. It constitutes approximately 0.09% of the elements in the oceans; it has been found in meteorites. Sulfur was known and used by man before recorded history. The American Chemical Society approved spelling for the element is sulfur. The English spelling sulphur is used commercially in the United States. In ancient times, sulfur was called brimstone, literally "burning stone." Today the term brimstone is used interchangeably with the term elemental sulfur. Sulfur is found naturally in the elemental form in subsurface deposits associated with gypsum and anhydrite in salt domes and sedimentary formations in evaporite basins and in solfatara-type deposits associated with volcanoes and mineral springs. Sulfur occurs also in molecular combination in ferrous sulfides (pyrites and pyrrhotite) and nonferrous sulfides (copper, lead, zinc, and nickel), and in mineral sulfates (gypsum and anhydrite); as hydrogen sulfide contaminant in natural gas; as organic compounds in crude oil and tar sands; and as pyrite and organic compounds in coal and oil shales. Sulfur resources are abundant and exist throughout the world but the extent to which they can be classified as reserves is greatly circumscribed by prevailing prices and technology. Estimates of world sulfur reserves are compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. A compilation of reserves by area and source of sulfur published in 1970 and presented here as [Table 1] totaled 2.47 billion tons (Lewis, 1970). The effect of the decline in prices which has occurred since the earlier estimate is dramatically illustrated by the 1972 estimate of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior which shows world sulfur reserves of only 1.2 billion tons (Anon., 1972d). Sulfur is produced commercially from one or more sources in nearly 70 countries of the world. World production of sulfur in all forms totaled 41.6 million tons in 1971. (Sulfur statistics given in this chapter are long tons.) Native deposits, sulfides and oil and gas contributed, respectively, 31, 41, and 25% of world production (Table 2). Of the sulfur produced from native deposits, salt domes accounted for 54% and evaporite basin deposits, 44%. Volcanic deposits are of little significance except for local consumption. The past two decades have seen important shifts in the world's sulfur sources. In 1950, native deposits and sulfides each supplied about one-half of the world's production. During the 1950s, sulfur recovered from oil and natural gas grew rapidly, representing about 10% of the total by 1960. Since then, the petroleum industry has continued to increase its relative importance as a source of sulfur, representing more than 30% at 1972 year-end. Sulfur is generally classified as elemental or nonelemental for statistical purposes. Elemental sulfur is sulfur produced in the pure, uncombined form. It includes production from native deposits, as well as that recovered in the elemental form from oil and natural gas or other sulfur-bearing materials. When produced from other than native deposits, it is generally referred to as recovered elemental sulfur. Nonelemental sulfur is that which is utilized commercially in molecular combination with other elements, such as sulfides or sulfates. Elemental sulfur is being produced from salt dome deposits in the Gulf Coast region of the United States and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico, and from evaporite basin deposits in west Texas, Poland, Sicily,

The effect of hydrogen pretreatment of alumina, magnesia, and zirconia crucibles on reduced oxygen levels in iron charges has been studied. Hydrogen treatment of commercial high-purity magnesia crucibles was observed to produce as high as 70 pct reduction in oxygen content in iron melts. Hydrogen treatment of the commercial high-purity grade zirconia crucibles produced a 25 pct reduction in oxygen levels in iron melts. An average reduction of Knoop hardness of 47 pct was recorded on the iron charges melted in hydrogen-treated crucibles. On the basis of the experiments and the free-energy diagram, it appears that the major source of reducible oxygen to the iron charge is the suboxides and impurity oxides rather than the major oxide of the crucible. Suitable pretreatment of the crucibles to reduce and remove these oxides yields low oxygen levels in iron melted in the crucibles. DURING the last decade, attempts to produce more pure and uniform alloyed metals have brought about the development of many new melting techniques. Notable among these are vacuum-induction melting, inert and consumable-electrode melting, the cold-mold technique, and numerous techniques for removal of impurities by chemical reaction. However great the achievements in this field, metals must still be melted in contact with media of varying reactivity; i.e., gas, ceramic, and slag. Studies have been made to attain an understanding of the reactions that take place during melting, including slag-metal reactions and equilibria, equilibrium of hydrogen and water vapor, and carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide with oxygen in molten iron. These reactions have been treated quite thoroughly. There is one condition, however, that has been widely overlooked, and, to the author's knowledge, only cursive investigation has been made of it. This is the reaction between the ceramic crucible material and the iron charge. In recent years, Hadley and Bianchi' made a series of studies on hydrogen deoxidation of iron in magnesia crucibles. Bianchi2 studied crucible-FeO equilibria in the temperature range 1525°to 1650°C in high vacuum with, however, inconsistent results. Richardson and Jeffes3 in their series of articles on thermodynamic reactions in the making of iron and steel refer to Wentrup and Hieber's4 work on iron and aluminum deoxidation. Their pork included melting iron in alumina crucibles and measuring the aluminum and oxygen content in the iron. Because of the low values obtained, question has arisen of their analytical accuracy.3 Dastur and chipman5 obtained values on hydrogen-oxygen equilibrium in molten iron contained in alumina crucibles similar to those obtained in experiments in the present program. Hochmann6 studied removal of impurities in chromium irons in high vacuum. His results with respect to oxygen level in chromium-iron melted in magnesia crucibles are consistent with results we have obtained.

No records have been found of coal in the old Spanish documents, although some mention of it probably exists in manuscripts. Coal was found in Mt. Diablo, in Contra Costa County, about five miles south of the San Joaquin River in 1852, but the first mine, the Teutonia, was located in 1858. The deposits are located on both sides of a high ridge, and vessels of 1,000 tons burden could ascend the river to the nearest point to the mines.1 In 1854, coal was found about four miles from Oroville, on the Feather River, in Butte County. Development work was started and in 1856 a mine was opened. From the description the coal was likely a variety of lignite and probably never amounted to anything commercially, as it does not appear again in the records 2 The more valuable mines at Mt. Diablo were opened in 1859 and 1860. By 1867 there had been 11 mines started and at that time five were in operation. The seam conditions were much disturbed and lack of knowledge of them caused much waste of effort and money. All of the coal excepting that used locally and in nearby towns, was shipped to San Francisco, and largely used for steam purposes. The first receipts were in 1861-6,620 tons. A railroad to the river had been constructed and opened in February 1866. The Corral Hollow field in Alameda County was found and prospected to a small extent in 1862. Two mines were opened but little work was done and the field was then abandoned. Good exposures were rare and the cost of underground exploration was then prohibitive. The Commercial mine produced coal in 1869 and 1870, but a fire in the latter year destroyed the tipple and communications to the mine. The Livermore mine was abandoned after 18 months operation in 1875 and 1876 and no other work was done here until the nineties. INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. DESPITE strikes, domestic production of copper and zinc in 1951 rose about 3 pct and 10 pct, respectively. Lead output fell only about 7 pct. Primary refined, including processed scrap and imported concentrates, was somewhat higher for zinc, and slightly lower for copper and lead. Prospects are for moderately larger mine and refined production in 1952 according to Standard & Poor's analysis of nonferrous metals. The survey goes on to report domestic copper prices averaged 14 pct higher in 1951, lead prices 30 pct higher, and zinc prices 32 pct higher. The 2¢ rise in zinc and lead ceilings in October will lift the average price in 1952 over 8 pet, assuming no further price change. Currently, OPS appears opposed to raising the 24 ½ ¢ copper ceiling to the 24 ½ ¢ maximum on imported metal. The steep premiums in world markets are likely to be reduced in 1952. Sales in 1951 were at new peaks. A further moderate rise is indicated for 1952. Earnings of the industry were at a new high in 1951. The increase for companies covered in the survey was perhaps 25 pet, despite a tax rate of about 53 pet, against about 40 pct. in 1950. Relatively maintained to moderately higher earnings are currently indicated for 1952. About two thirds of the companies covered in the survey raised dividends, including extras, in 1951. In general, maintained payments appear probable in 1952.

In this note several recent results on twinning in copper shock-loaded with planar shock waves will be presented and the role of the twins in recrystalliza-tion will be discussed. The twinlike markings first observed in shock-loaded copper by smith1 were identified as twins by De Angelis and Cohen.2 This identification has been confirmed by others.3 In Ref. 2 it was also shown that there is an orientation dependence for twinning at low shock pressures, such that twins in a crystal loaded in [lll] form in the rarefaction or tensile wave but in

HISTORY IT is not known when kaolin mining was first begun in North Carolina. Evidence, in the form of excavations and primitive tools, indicates that some of the deposits were worked in prehistoric times. It has been suggested that the prehistoric mining was for mica, but the workings were all in altered or partly altered pegmatite material and the dumps do not represent the amount of material removed. Some of the early openings may have been made in search of kaolin or semi-kaolinized feldspar which was sold to English1 traders along the coast and used in some of the early English porcelains. In 1944,2 an application was made for an English patent to produce porcelain from an earthy mixture obtained from the Cherokee Nation in North America. It is well established, however, that the occurrence of kaolin in western North Carolina was known in England by 1767. In that year, Josiah Wedgewood sent T. Griffiths3,4 to what is now Macon County, North Carolina, to secure a supply of kaolin for use in England. Griffiths diary, now in Etruria Museum, Stokes-on-Trent, contains a most interesting account of his experience. Kaolin was discovered at St. Austell, England, shortly after the voyage of Griffiths, which probably accounts for the lack of further interest in American kaolin. Between 1767 and 1888, there are no records of kaolin mining in North Carolina. In the latter year, however, mining was begun near Webster, Jackson County, and, in the intervening period, has become an important industry. For some 20 years, kaolin mining was carried on chiefly in Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. About 1904, it was begun in the Spruce Pine district and for the past 20 years most of the kaolin mined in the State has come from Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. DISTRIBUTION The kaolins of North Carolina are limited in occurrence to the Piedmont Plateau and Appalachian Mountain area of the State. While kaolins are widespread in the Piedmont Plateau, having been prospected for in Rutherford, Cleveland, Gaston, Granville, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Richmond, Moore, Randolph, and Montgomery Counties, the production from that area has never been important. The known deposits of commercial importance are limited entirely to the mountain area of the State. While kaolins occur widely distributed throughout the mountain area and have been prospected for in many counties of that area, commercial production has come chiefly from two districts. One of these includes Jackson, Macon, Swain, and Haywood Counties. The other includes Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. TsunashiRo Wada, honorary member of the Institute, died at his residence, Ushigome, in Tokyo, on Dec. 20, 1920, at the age of sixty-four; he was born on March 15, 1856, at Obana in the province of Wakasa. An expert mineralogist, lithologist and geologist, he identified himself throughout his life with the development of the mining interest of this country. Perhaps the most noteworthy of his meritorious services in the public sense was the extension of the Imperial Steel Works at Yawata, anticipating the grim fate that hurled Japan. into a war with Russia in 1904. Educated in the Imperial University of Tokyo by foreign professors, he studied especially mineralogy, lithology and geology. In 1875 he was appointed assistant professor in the Imperial University of Tokyo, and in 1878 entered the service of the Home Department. From 1880 until 1893, Mr. Wada was Director of the Imperial Geological Survey of Japan, during which time he practically laid the foundation of the geological investigation work in Japan. In 1884, he made a trip to Europe by government order to attend the international Congress in Berlin, visiting en route several countries of Europe and America. While Director of the Survey, he was also, from 1880 to 1885, lecturer, and from 1885 to 1891, professor of mineralogy and lithology in the Imperial University, and, from 1889 to 1893, was Director of the Imperial Mining Bureau of Japan. In this capacity, he revised the mining laws of Japan, thus laying the foundation of Japan's mining administration. In 1894, he was again appointed lecturer in the Imperial University of Tokyo; in 1895, appointed Technical Adviser on Mines to the Imperial Household Department of Japan; and, in 1897, appointed President of the Imperial Steel Works, which was completed in 1900 with the expenditure of $10,000,000. In this capacity he did a great deal to promote the iron and. steel industry of this country. We owe him the ore-purchase contract with the Daiya iron mine in China, which remarkably facilitated the extension of the iron works in later days. The victory of the Russo-Japanese war must be said to be due to his merit in no small measure. He resigned the presidency of the Imperial Steel Works in 1901. In 1899, Mr. Wada visited America and several countries of Europe by government order; in 1902, he traveled through north and middle China doing exploration work and studying the geology of the country, accompanied by mining engineers and geologists. In 1894, he was again appointed lecturer in the Imperial University of Tokyo; in 1895, appointed Technical Adviser on Mines to the Imperial Household Department of Japan; and, in 1897, appointed President of the Imperial Steel Works, which was completed in 1900 with the expenditure of $10,000,000. In this capacity he did a great deal to promote the iron and. steel industry of this country. We owe him the ore-purchase contract with the Daiya iron mine in China, which remarkably facilitated the extension of the iron works in later days. The victory of the Russo-Japanese war must be said to be due to his merit in no small measure. He resigned the presidency of the Imperial Steel Works in 1901. In 1899, Mr. Wada visited America and several countries of Europe by government order; in 1902, he traveled through north and middle China doing exploration work and studying the geology of the country, accompanied by mining engineers and geologists. Anthropological diggings have revealed that the American Indians carried on intertribal trade in flint, obsidian, ochre, and other mineral commodities, indicating that mining was practiced before the arrival of the white man from Europe Carbon datings from the native copper pits on Isle Royal and Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan, have yielded dates as early as 5555 BC for this mining. As early as Pliocene time, Eolithic-man fashioned artifacts of stones probably found on the surface, but by late Quaternary, Neolithic man was sinking shafts and mining underground for flint. Because placer gold was easily recognized and easily worked, it was used for ornamental purposes by nearly all cultures before other metals were discovered The Chaldeans hammered copper objects approximately 4500 BC and copper was used in India and China about 3000 BC. An ancient trail from the Nile to the Sinai led to the mines of copper and turquoise Paintings and bas-reliefs of Egyptian tombs dating around 3000 BC depict maps, mining, and smelting in this area. It is interesting that despite this widespread and long history of mining, Agricola records that the first mining laws were developed by the Greeks at Laurium about 700 BC. All of the base metals are known to have been produced in small quantities during the Colonial period in America, but perhaps the first commercial production was the iron ore shipped from Virginia to England in 1608, followed by lead in 1621. Among the earliest companies formed in America that still survive (according to the standard reference yearbooks), were: the Jackson Mining Co., predecessor of Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. on the Marquette Range, Michigan, in 1844; the Sussex Zinc and Copper Mining & Manufacturing Co., fore-runner of New Jersey Zinc Co. in 1848 (although the Franklin-Sterling body was discovered in 1640); the five companies, Pittsburg and Boston, Quincy Mining, Pewabic, Huron Mining, and Minesota all formed in the decade (1844-1855) that followed the rediscovery of Keweenaw copper, were combined into Calumet and Hecla; and Vermont Copper Mining Co. in 1853 Although southeast Wisconsin lead-zinc was discovered in 1690, Mine La Motte in southeast Missouri in 1720, placer gold in California in 1848, Comstock Lode in 1859, Leadville in 1860, Cripple Creek in 1891, no surviving companies of those early mining periods exist. It has been suggested that the prehistoric mining was for mica, but the workings were all in altered or partly altered pegmatite material and the dumps do not represent the amount of material removed. some of the early openings may have been made in search of kaolin or semi-kaolinized feldspar which was sold to English1 traders along the coast and used in some Of the early English porcelains. In 1744,2 an application was made for an English patent to produce porcelain from an earthy mixture obtained from the Cherokee Nation in North America. It is well established, however, that the occurrence of kaolin in western North Carolina was known in England by 1767. In that year, Josiah Wedgewood sent T. Griffiths3,4 to what is now Macon County, North Carolina, to secure a supply Of kaolin for use in England. Griffiths diary, now in Etruria Museum, Stokes-on-Trent, contains a most interesting account of his experience. Kaolin was discovered at St. Austell, England, shortly after the voyage Of Griffiths, which probably accounts for the lack of further interest in American kaolin. Between 1767 and 1888, there are no records of kaolin mining in North Carolina. In the latter year, however, mining was begun near Webster, Jackson County, and, in the intervening period, has become an important industry. 'Or some 20 years, kaolin mining was carried On chiefly in Jackson, Macon, and Swain Counties. About 1904, it was begun in the Spruce Pine district and for the past 20 Yea's most of the kaolin mined in the State has come from Avery, Mitchell, and Yancey Counties. Distribution The kaolins of North Carolina are limited in occurrence to the Piedmont Plateau and Appalachian Mountain area of the State. The successful control of any operation, whether industrial, military, or purely physical, is fundamentally dependent upon the same elements: (I) The securing of accurate and pertinent information concerning the factors involved in the operation; (2) Correct interpretation of their relationship as affecting future results; (3) Efficient means for effecting changes in the factors governing the operation to shape the result. The analogy which exists in the control of operations in these widely differing fields of action is of utmost interest, and in considering the physical control of a process, the realization of its existence permits a clearer conception of the steps required to achieve results and aids in formulating the problems to be met. Let us imagine, for instance, the requirements for successfully conducting a business. It is evident that the first requisite lies in obtaining continuous and reliable information concerning the functioning of its various branches and in detecting, with the least possible delay, any tendency of change in their functions; next, in correctly analyzing this information by comparison with past records, showing the relation of the particular business to general conditions in the trade; and finally, in employing means for counteracting any unfavorable change in general conditions, or compensating for its effects by an appropriate action. Likewise, in military operations, the success in carrying out a plan lies primarily in the maintenance of proper intelligence and communication service, which furnishes information as to the disposition of forces; in correct analysis of the ascertained position, guided by fundamental knowledge of tactics; and finally, on the efficient carrying out of orders and effecting corrective movements. In the physical operation of a process, such as for example in cracking, our information is obtained by pressure and temperature instruments, etc., which permit us to visualize existing conditions under which the operation is being carried out. The information at hand is then analyzed and certain conclusions arrived at as to the results which will be obtained under the observed conditions. If this analysis should indicate, in the

The earliest reference to coal in Tennessee is that by Dr. Walker in 1750 (see p. 18) where he saw it near the present site of Middlesboro. The next reference found is in 1798 when Morse stated, "some of these mountains, particularly in the, Cumberland, or Great-Laurel Ridge, are the most stupendous piles in the United States. They abound in ginseng and coal."' There must have been many places where it was seen in that interval, but nearly as long a time elapsed before Morris, in 1834, said that "fine beds of stone-coal exist in both East and Middle Tennessee."2 In a description of the Dover Iron Works, on the left side of the Cumberland River, a few miles above Dover, in Stewart County, it was said that "80 hands were employed in digging and transporting stone coal" and that the "plant had been running at least since Oct. 2, 1834."3 While doubtless coal had been used locally, this is probably the first use of it commercially in the state. The consumption of stone coal was 4,000 tons per year. In this same geological report openings of coal are mentioned near Battle Creek, Marion County, and in Bledsoe and Rhea Counties, where it was being used locally by blacksmiths; some other places were being worked near the turnpike road from Kingston to the Crab-Orchard, the product being hauled three miles to the Tennessee River and loaded in barges; farther west in. White County several outcrops were found. In Fentress County, several pits had been opened, the coal being sent down the Obey and Cumberland Rivers, and openings were also seen in Morgan, Anderson, Roane, Warren, Hamilton and Franklin Counties. The writer had hoped to publish an account of the iron works in the state but was unable to obtain the necessary information. He was told by an old iron-master, Mr. E. Embree, that

In coursing the ventilating air through a mine it is often necessary to restrict a comparatively open split in order that it may carry exactly the desired quantity of air. Such a restriction is known as a regulator, and usually takes the form of a partition with a hole in it. The quantity of air circulating is controlled by the size of the hole or orifice. For example, it is desired to force a quantity q I cu. ft, per min. through split a (Fig. 1) and the quantity q2 through split b. It requires a pressure of 2 in. water to force the desired quantity through a, and a pressure of 1 in. to force the desired amount through b. The pressure drop between points A and B must be 2 in and a pressure of 1 in. must be destroyed in split b. This is done by inserting a regulator in b, which causes the velocity to increase in the orifice and results in a change from pressure-head to velocity-head. If the air, after passing the orifice, is slowed down in a turbulent manner, all of the velocity-head does not change back into pressure-head, so a permanent loss of static pressure results. A classic formula for computing the area of an orifice to destroy a certain amount of static pressure has been handed down from early days: 0.0004Q a =2 This formula is based on the assumption that all velocity-head in the orifice is "destroyed;" that is, does not reappear again as either velocity-pressure or static pressure. The derivation of the formula is as follows: h = head lost in regulator in fect of air. v = velocity in regulator in fect per second. q = quantity circulating in cubic feet per second. Q = quantity circulating in cubic feet pcr minute. a = area of orifice in square feet.

Coal was known in this county before 1819, but there is no record of its use before that year. In that year a furnace, the first one built in the northwestern countries, was put in blast on Bear Creek; it was built to use coke and its first blast was with this fuel, which was made in heaps, but the blast was too weak and the furnace chilled after two or three tons of iron had been made. Charcoal was then substituted, and this use of coal ceased.1 In November of the same year a resolution was adopted urging state aid for a road from Kittanning to. Hamilton, New York: "that this road will increase the trade and industry of the whole county, between Pittsburgh and the New York line; and that our soil will in consequence be better tilled, our mines of coal, of iron and of salt, be better wrought, etc."2 In 1828 an advertisement of lands situated near Freeport on the Allegheny River and contiguous to the canal nearly completed between the Kiskiminitas and Pittsburgh stated that they contained "large and never failing springs, Coal in abundance, and a great deal of Fine Timber."3 In 1830 there were said to have been 24 salt wells in this county producing 327,000 bushels of salt, chiefly on the Kiski and Allegheny Rivers. In 1837 there were a number of wells in the vicinity of Freeport. As all the salt works on the Conemaugh River, were using coal long before 1830,4 it is safe to say that a considerable tonnage of coal was used for some years in these plants. In 1837 a tract of land in Clarion Township having a new saw mill and abounding "in Stone Coal" was offered for sale,5 and also one in Toby Township having "an abundance of the best quality of iron ore and stone coal."' In 1839 an advertisement in the Pittsburgh Mercury said
