The Gippsland Basin, southeastern Australia, has an Upper Cainozoic history of episodic change of hydrology and the related environment, reflected in the geomorphology and surficial deposits of the onshore basin and the hydrodynamically controlled accumulations of petroleum of the offshore basin. Succeeding this episodic pattern, man through a number of activities, has had a sudden and major impact on the hydrology and the related environment. Activities include those directly affecting the groundwater system, such as extraction of fossil fuels with the consequent threat of land subsidence; irrigation and clearing of vegetation and the consequent effect of salinisation; change of land use and installation of septic tanks with resulting nitrate pollution; damming of streams and the consequent reduction in the frequency of floods with degradation of the biological Environment; de-snagging streams and construction of cutoffs with increased stream erosion, modifying wetlands including drainage, with the consequent degradation of their ecosystems; and increase in phosphate and nitrate inputs to the coastal lakes with the risk of their eutrophication.

The Material Service Thornton quarry is a multi-million annual production tons complex. Surrounded by busy surface highways, and divided by a railroad on the north/south axis and further divided by a major interstate highway on the east/west axis, blasting is a daily challenge. This paper deals with the problems of production blasting in an area adjacent to that interstate highway, and paralleling a busy four-lane highway. Discussion includes primary blasting issues such as borehole size, drill patterns and flyrock controls. Discussion also includes blast designs, timing schematics, smooth-wall blasting solutions, traffic and vibration concerns and many other factors influencing the success of this project.

"Bubble area flux has been claimed to be a major tool to dimension flotation equipment. The paper describes laboratory scale (batch and 301 continuous cell using plant feed) and small-scale (1 ,8m3) industrial experiments with coarse-grained massive sulphide ore.Samples were taken with different froth thickness and air addition rates while the bubble size was measured with an UTC capillary device. Problems of averaging the bubble size measurements and the bubble area flux measurements are also discussed.Material balances were calculated using the commercial program BILCO. The flotation rate constants were calculated for pulp and for froth assuming that we can extrapolate the flotation rate constant of the pulp phase from tests using very thin froth thicknesses.The results indicate that the bubble area flux is not alone an adequate dimensioning tool. With fine sizes there was a nearly linear relationship between the bubble area flux and rate constant for constant impeller revolutions. For coarse sizes the form of the relationship is non-linear and seems to go through a maximum value. Thus the final flotation outcome is not a simple function of bubble area flux but depends on the particle size distribution and other more traditional flotation cell dimensioning variables. The effect of the froth residence time in the total recovery of coarse particles is large, but will not be treated in this paper."

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

Oceanic subduction-related volcanic frontal arcs extend over 20 000 km within the western Pacific basin and over 21 500 km worldwide, yet they remain largely unexplored with respect to active seafloor mineralization. Systematic exploration of 26 major submarine volcanoes along ~840 km of the Kermadec arc northeast of New Zealand has documented ten (39 per cent) as being hydrothermally active. This frequency of venting is comparable to that on slow-to-moderate rate spreading mid-ocean ridges, which comprise ~80 per cent of the 60 000 km-long global system of spreading centers. The chemistry of fluids discharged from the Kermadec arc volcanoes is moderated by magmatic components in both the gaseous (CO2 + SO2-H2S) and liquid (Fe) phases at very high concentration.The high frequency of venting coupled with chemically rich discharge discovered during this first systematic survey of any arc system forecasts submarine arcs as being important sources of chemicals to the oceans and as potentially lucrative exploration sites for seafloor mineralization. The exploration protocols developed during these surveys include bathymetric mapping of mostly unknown volcanic edifices, followed by detailed water column profiling and sampling to detect and characterize volcanic fluid emission signatures. These procedures are being refined as the survey progresses, both for efficiency and as direct seafloor observations become available for predictive application of water column plume information to guide seafloor mineral exploration.

Commodity price down cycles are a fact of life in the mining industry. And companies pre-pare for them as best they can. Evenso, operations are still curtailed or closed during those cycles, profits shrink, layoffs are inevitable and many companies do not survive. However, one of the few good things that occurs during down cycles is the new, innovative exploration, mining and processing technologies that come about during hard times. To survive the lean times, the mining industry turns to improved technology to decrease costs and hold the bottom line. And, because mining is a cyclical business, each down cycle brings about technology improvements that carry over into the good times.

A study of the mechanics of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made. The transition from brittle to ductile failure occurs when the friction along the fracture surfaces exceeds the shear strength of the rock. A machine has been developed for measuring both the shear strength of rock and the friction along rock fracture surfaces. In this shear machine, the fractures are forced along definite planes; as a result, the rock is stronger than in compression tests where the fractures choose the weakest paths through the specimens. Friction is composed of several forces: (1) the forces to slide irregulurities on surfaces over each other; (2) forces to shear some of these irregularities; (3) molecular attractions across the fractures; and (4) forces required to break bonds resulting from melting and welding at the tips of irregularities on the surfaces. Friction along rock fracture surfaces is not proportional to contact pressure as usually assumed; instead, it increases as the contact pressure raised to the 0.4 to 0.8 power. INTRODUCTION It is difficult to produce tensile stresses under the high compressive stresses present in the earth; therefore, in deep drilling and geological faulting, shear failure predominates. This shear failure mechanism is complicated because rock is a heterogeneous material containing pore spaces, microfractures, elastic discontinuities and other imperfections. A study of shear failure of rock under pressure has been made to obtain a better understanding of this complex mechanism. A machine has been developed and used to measure the shear strength of rock and friction along sheared surfaces. This machine has certain advantages over the compression test — shear properties can be measured under low normal stresses and shear stress and normal stress can be varied independently. The first part of this paper is a description of shear failure of rock under pressure. The role of shear strength and friction along fracture surfaces in the shear failure mechanism will be discussed. The second part consists of a description of the shear machine and a discussion of the shear strength and friction data obtained using this machine. It will be shown that shear strength depends upon the size of the stressed zone, and that friction does not increase linearly with contact pressure as usually assumed. Attempts are made to relate some of the new concepts to tectonic failure and to dril ling. SHEAR FAILURE IN ROCK TRIAXIAL TESTS The shear failure mechanism is illustrated by the triaxial test shown in Fig. 1. In this test, a cylindrical rock specimen is subjected to a confining pressure, PC, and an axial pressure, pa. The Waihi-Waitekauri region hosts numerous low-sulfidation epithermal deposits that both outcrop and occur at depth. Zones of intense hydrothermal alteration enclose the Au-Ag bearing quartz vein deposits. Hydrothermal alteration includes the destruction of magnetite by hydrothermal fluids, pervasive silicification adjacent to quartz lodes and potassium enrichment due to adularia and illite deposition. High-resolution airborne magnetic and radiometric, and new gravity data delineate distinct geophysical anomalies associated with hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation. Five magnetically quiet zones occur in the region varying in size from 3 to 34 km2 and in geometry from circular to irregular zones. These zones represent the near-surface extent of strong to intense hydrothermal alteration associated with fossil geothermal systems. All epithermal deposits in the region occur in magnetically quiet zones. Over 120 new gravity stations together with existing data across the Waihi district have defined a positive Bouguer gravity anomaly coincident with the magnetically quiet zone. Eastern and western gradients of 50 gu/km bound the anomaly that contains two flat gravity highs west and east of the Waihi deposit. Strong potassium signatures in airborne radiometric data correlate with outcropping zones of alteration and are consistent with the presence of adularia and illite minerals. Hydrothermally altered zones are represented by areas of low Th/K ratios as a result of low thorium concentrations in andesite and elevated potassium levels in altered zones.

"This paper was written during part of the author’s student co-op with Cargill Salt at its Avery Islandunderground salt mine in Louisiana. Blasting salt is a unique type of blasting that is different than blasting other rock types. The plastic nature of salt, along with its large swell factor make salt a challenge to blast. The Cargill salt mines use and have tested a variety of different methods for breaking salt in an efficient manner, however these blasting methods are rarely used in other operations nor talked about today."

This work investigates the effect of waste plastics addition on the reduction of iron oxide by sawdust. Composite pellets of iron oxide containing sawdust (SD), high density polyethylene (HDPE) and blends of SD/HDPE were fired under argon in a horizontal tube furnace at temperatures between 1300 and 1500 °C. Reduced samples were weighed after 10 minutes of reduction and the extent of reduction was calculated from the measured oxygen contents of the compact. The results showed improved extent of reduction when SD was blended with HDPE. The highest extent of reduction was achieved at SD:HDPE ratio of 2:3.

Interpretation of pressure build-up data obtained in the conventional manner has often been difficult because of the deviation from theoretical behavior. Major causes of this deviation have been attributed to damage and afterflow, and to fluid redistribution in the wellbore which, in extreme cases, can result in a pressure hump in the early portion of the build-up curve. Theoretical investigations show that bottom-hole pressure is definitely influenced by phase redistribution in the tubing column during surface shut-in tests, and that the magnitude of the effect is sensitive to the producing gas-oil ratio and stabilized rate of flow in the well. For field experiments a wire-line tubing packer, which can be run in the tubing against a stabilized flow rate, was developed for bottom-hole shut-in tests. By use of this bottom-hole .shut-in method, pressure humps previously observed in surface shut-in tests were completely eliminated and the effects of afterflow minimized. Analog and digital computer studies have been made to obtain theoretical curves for comparison with field curves, and remarkable agreement between the results of bottom-hole shut-in tests and theoretical curves has been obtained. INTRODUCTION Pressure build-up data from shut-in wells have been used by the petroleum industry to determine the permeability of the formation, to estimate wellbore damage, to evaluate the static reservoir pressure and to speculate reservoir volume. Calculation of these factors is based on methods of analysis developed for theoretical systems whose build-up curves have a charac- teristic shape when the wells are shut-in at the sand faCe.1,2,3,5,8,10 However, field curves obtained by conventional surface shut-in methods do not always exhibit this characteristic. Such factors as stratification, rock heterogeneities and irregular reservoir geometry can cause the character of a build-up curve to deviate from that predicted by theory for a simple system. In addition, all field build-up data are affected by the methods utilized in obtaining the measurements. Conventional surface shut-in techniques allow two effects to occur which contribute directly to the manner in which pressure builds up at the sand face. The first, afterflow, has been recognized for some time and methods are available for estimating the magnitude of its effect and for correcting its influence.' The second, phase segregation in the tubing column after shut-in, has been reported only recently and appears to exert a considerable influence on the character of field build-up curves.!' In extreme cases, phase segregation can produce "pressure humps" in the early portion of the build-up curve. Such curves have been considered anomalous and have defied analysis. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the effect of phase segregation in the tubing string during build-up and to present a bottom-hole shut-in technique for obtaining field build-up data which minimizes the influence of afterflow and eliminates phase segregation effects. It will be shown that reliable reservoir information can be calculated from build-up measurements obtained using this method, even though conventional surface shut-in tests on the same wells yield anomalous data. Construction of foundations for the Skyway Segment of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge required innovative techniques due to the mass of the structures being inserted and the unique subsurface of the Bay. Twenty of the pier structures required large sheet pile cofferdams. Eight other foundations were installed in open water without cofferdams at the deeper part of the Bay. This narrative will present the initial planning, as well as the stages of installation, for each type of foundation. The first section will discuss foundation constructability modifications made during the initial planning phases of the project. Considerable effort was expended by Caltrans, the owner, T.Y. Lin the designer, and KFM (Kiewit/FCI/Manson) the contractor in modifying the design to assure that required tolerance would be maintained during the installation of the foundations. The final section will describe the steps required for installation including: initial access dredging, installation of cofferdams, preparation required to install the footing boxes, footing box installation, foundation support pile installation, and pile to box connections.

Tensile strength testing has been one of the most common physical property testing methods of thin spray-on liner (TSL) products worldwide. However, the variety of products tested has been insufficient for comparison purposes. Specimen preparation procedures and test parameters such as curing time and loading rate are not reported well. Comprehensive tensile strength testing on 20TSL products and one plain shotcrete brand was performed over 28days of curing period. Detailed information on the test procedures with particular attention on the important aspects during sample preparation and test execution are provided. As expected, the tensile strength increases with increasing curing period. The test results make the categorization and comparison of liner products possible.

The production of sulphuric acid at Port Pirie by the contact process began in March 1924 with the commissioning of the Electrolytic Zinc Co.'s roasting and acid plant. This plant, operated by B.H.A.S. Pty. Ltd. on behalf of the E.Z. Co., continued to produce sulphuric acid from the gases evolved when roasting Broken Hill zinc concentrate in mechanically rabbled furnaces until September 1954, when the plant was closed down.In this peri9d of approximately 30 years some 600,000 mono tons of 98·5 per cent sulphuric acid was produced, most of which was used for fertilizer production at Wallaroo and Port Adelaide. During World War II 14,400 mono tons of the above was produced in the form of 20 per cent Oleum and railed to the Salisbury Munitions Factory for use in the production of nitro-glycerine, gun-cotton and T.N.T.In the early post-war period various ways of converting at least some of the sulphur in the gases' discharged to atmosphere from the lead sintering plant were considered until, in 1949, it was decided to erect a modern contact acid plant. Much work remained to be done on the roasting plant to produce a gas of suitable grade for the contact process and also on the design of a purification section suitable for the treatment of D.L. gases.The acid section itself, however, was largely of conventional design and it was therefore decided that this would be erected first. To it was then attached a sulphur-burning section to allow it to operate as a "hot gas" brimstone acid plant until the roasting and gas purification plants had been designed and erected. In this way the urgent need for sulphuric acid in the fertilizer industry would be relieved, to some extent at least, as soon as, possible.

Before 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. When considering expansion, it was decided that the existing process would not lend itself to a program geared toward processing the total output of copper precipitate and copper concentrate from KUCC mining and concentrating operations. During 1989 and 1990, several smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy) of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy). The smelter facility that used the Noranda technology was shut down in May 1995. The flash smelting furnace operation began in June with the flash converting furnace start-up a few weeks later.

Composite ores are more often used for production of iron in connection with reserve depletion of traditional ore crude in the regions with developed metallurgy. In particular, the majority of perspective ferrum-ore deposits of the Urals are presented by titanferous magnetite ores which contain a significant amount of titanium and vanadium alongside with ferrum. Thus, the deposits of titanferous magnetites of the Southern Urals on the average contain about 20 % of Fe, 8,7 % TiO2 and 0,24 % V2O5. Due to a high content of titanium oxides it is impossible or it is inexpedient to process such ores in blast furnaces. During work just on titanferous magnetite ore refractory titanium-containing slags are formed in a blast furnace, and in case of its dilution by ores of different types the titanium due to the small content in slag is thrown out. It is often impossible to separate such ores into ferriferous and titanferous concentrates because ferrum and titanium are present in the same minerals. This work attempts to selectively reduce ferrum in solid oxide and to separate metallic iron from titanferousslag with fast fusion. Solid-phase reduction of ferrum has been carried out with carbon at temperature of 1000? 1300°?. In products of solid-phase reduction the extremely disperse mix of metal iron and only partially reduced titanium oxides have been achieved. It is impossible to separate such a mix mechanically. However, the fast fusion of the mix allowed separating it into cast iron and slag with the high content of titanium. Thus the cast iron contained less than 0,1 % of titanium, and the slag did not contain practically any ferrum.

The threat of global warming and its prominent position in public discussion and political debate requires all industry to take stock of its contribution to rising atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases. For the primary metals industry, the first step must be to identify the pattern and range of emissions at each step in the production chain. Only then can the industry assess the economic consequences of the penalties on emissions that will be imposed by governments and regulators and devise cost-effective plans to avoid or mitigate such penalties. While some work has been done to estimate carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using Life Cycle Inventory analysis, this approach is less useful than site-by-site emissions estimates. It is the level of specific emissions at each site that will ultimately deter-mine carbon taxation liabilities and participation in emissions trading schemes. Most mining companies have moved with the times to issue sustainability reports for their operations. But in the absence of any standardized reporting format, it is difficult to make useful comparisons between even the best-reported producers on a like-with-like basis. For this reason, Minecost.com modeled the use of fuels and energy used in mining, milling, shipping and metallurgical treatment to cover ?cradle-to-gate? emissions of greenhouse gases resulting from the production of the major base metals copper, zinc, lead and nickel. Greenhouse gas emissions ? overwhelmingly carbon dioxide ? are associated with the consumption of energy at every step in the production chain, from exploration through mining to the production of refined metal. Producers of primary metal employ diverse technologies to mine, mill, smelt and refine several different types of ore. Every orebody has its own special characteristics. In addition, most base metals are produced in concentrate that must be transported to smelters, with con-sequent emissions consequences.

Adsorption of lead and ferric iron on quartz and alumina is presented as a function of pH. Only the hydrolyzed species of these metal ions, FeOH++ and PbOH+, adsorb significantly on each of these minerals. Zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various additions of aluminum, lead, and magnesium salts. Sign reversal occurs at the pH values where significant concentrations of hydroxy complexes are formed. Models of adsorption are presented in the absence and presence of collector. The mechanism of adsorption of metal and collector species in the activation of nonmetallic minerals is still the center of considerable discussion in spite of the extensive study given this system. Until recently, the view was widely held that hydrated metal ions were responsible for this phenomenon. This fact is surprising, since it had been shown that the pH range in which flotation is effected corresponds to that in which metal ion hydrolysis occurs.' Additional support of this concept was pro vided by the work of Wolstenholme and Schulman in another system.' Later work has shown that hydroxy complexes of metal ions are the active species. These studies have also indicated that basic aqueous complexes of metal-collector may be necessary for flotation.3-7 Depending on the molecular weight of the collector, formation of these complexes may occur before or after precipitation of the metal-collector salt has occurred. Ion pair formation can occur when low molecular weight collectors are involved because relatively high concentrations of metal hydroxy complex and collector can be present in solution before precipitation occurs. This is not the case when high molecular weight collectors are used. A model of aqueous complex adsorption has been presented6,7 in which it has been assumed that adsorption occurs by the formation of water from adsorbed hydroxyl and hydrogen of the hydroxyl contained in the complex. Other authors8 have suggested that hy-droxy complexes are involved in these systems but that collector adsorption occurs by replacement of the hydroxyl of the adsorbed metal hydroxy complex with a fatty acid anion. All of these investigations have involved mineral surfaces that were negatively charged so that it is not possible to state with certainty whether hydrated metal ions or hydroxy complexes are the active species in this system. Use of a positively charged mineral should be helpful, however, since the hydrated metal ion will be repelled from this surface. On the other hand, if the hydroxy complex adsorbs by splitting out water, surface charge should have no effect because of the free energy decrease that the system will experience when water is formed. In this regard, sapphire is well-suited for study, since its surface is positively charged until approximately pH 9. Electrokinetic studies of quartz in the presence of various metal ions should also be useful in establishing the mechanisms of adsorption in these systems. That is, if the hydroxy complexes adsorb by water formation, drastic changes in the zeta potential should occur in the pH range in which hydrolysis occurs. In this view, adsorption of ions of widely different hydrolysis characteristics on both sapphire and quartz was measured. In addition, zeta potentials of quartz were measured as a function of pH in the presence of various metal ions and compared with flotation responses obtained under similar conditions. Experimental Materials and Techniques Reagent-grade aluminum, ferric and magnesium chlorides, and lead nitrate were used in this investigation. Adjustments in pH were made with reagent-grade HCl or KOH. Conductivity water, made by passing distilled water through an ion exchange column, was used in all of the experiments.

When most people think of explosives transport they think of a hazardous operation. We all know that we aren’t allowed to transport explosives through tunnels and are discouraged from traveling through heavily populated areas. Popular opinion suggests that explosives transport is a very risky operation. The authors decided to look into this a little more thoroughly and found just the opposite to be true. While there have been some disastrous world-wide accidents involving the transport of industrial explosives, this is not the case in the U.S. Over the past 10 years, accidents related to the transport of explosives used in mining and construction have resulted in 5 major injuries, 11 minor injuries, and no fatalities. Explosives and ammonium nitrate (AN) transport outside the U.S. has not had such a good record; there have been 4 major explosives or AN transport accidents resulting in a total of more than 300 deaths. Most of these fatalities could have been prevented if the accident site had been evacuated once the explosive or AN cargo began burning. The safe history of explosives and AN transport in the U.S. is due to diligent efforts by government, labor, and industry. However, accidents will become more common and disastrous if we become complacent.
