DR . JOHN A . CHURCH, in his treatise on the Comstock Locle 1 gave a full and clear account of the conditions of the mine during the period of greatest activity. The difficulties in the way of deep mining at that time were excessive water and high temperature. The drainage of the mines taxed the financial resources of the mining companies, and the high temperatures restricted the capacity of the miners for underground labor. In spite of these difficulties exploratory work was continued until the financial burden of removing the water became too great. The companies then restricted the work to the upper levels. The years 1883 to 1886 marked the period of cessation of deep mining. For 12 years thereafter mining was confined to the levels above the Sutro tunnel; and, while the question of drainage was more or less agitated, nothing of importance was done until the formation of the Comstock Pumping Association in 1898. Since that time successive levels have been drained until, at present, on the north-end mines, a depth of 700 ft. below the Sutro-tunnel level has been reached. Mining is now carried on in the Ophir mine from the 1,700- to the 2,200-ft. levels, and a winze is being sunk to make connection with the 2,300-ft. level (the 2,450 ft. of the C. & C. shaft). In 1903-the Ward Shaft Association was formed to undertake the draining of the Central and Gold Hill group of mines, and at the present time a depth of 2,500 ft. has been reached in the Ward shaft. The situation at the Ward looks promis¬ing, and the 3,000-ft. level may be reached in the near future. It is proposed to establish a large pumping-station on this level, and then begin the opening of known ore-bodies and the prospecting for new ones. The main factors which have contributed to the successful solution of the drainage problem are the Sutro tunnel, the use of the hydraulic elevator as a sinking-pump, the concentration of pumping-units, and cheap electrical power. The question of high temperature and its control still remains as a minor but important problem. The temperatures encountered in the new workings are as great as those in the earlier periods. The Comstock was considered the hottest group of mines in the world, and I am not aware of similar conditions in any other mining-district. A water-temperature as high as 160° F. has been reported from the Ward shaft, and temperatures below the Sutro tunnel are very high in many instances.

The rapidly growing demand for titanium pigments has aroused new interest in actual and potential sources of supply of titanium- bearing ores , which only a comparatively few years ago were almost unmarketable . This paper , which supplements a general circular entitled " Titanium" ( Information Circular 6365 ) , represents a summary of current trade literature and Government reports , together with some hitherto unpublished material that has accumulated in the files of the Bureau of Mines . The purpose of this pamphlet is simply to indicate the commercial possibilities of the deposits , and the discussion is confined almost entirely to the three commercial ores , ilmenite , rutile , and magnetite ( titaniferous iron ore ) .

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Joe Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately N. 20 to 45° The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1926, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting.

The enormous and constantly increasing demand for limestone to supply a multitude of uses is a remarkable feature of the mineral industries. As approximately 130,000,000 tons of limestone are produced annually, it is not surprising that deposits at or near the surface are gradually being exhausted and that less advantageous supplies are being worked. Quarries are becoming deeper and wider year by year, and in many places the volume of overburden that must be removed to allow open-pit work has increased alarmingly. Quarrymen are also gradually learning how expensive it is to sort and clean stone from a deposit overlain by poor material. As such conditions confront the limestone industry, the natural tendency is to seek some modification in method whereby the handicaps of increasing cost may be met and overcome. Operators, some of them unwillingly, have been forced to conclude that underground work in drifts and tunnels is the most logical solution of the problem. The unwillingness of some is largely due to unfamiliarity with mining and to the unfounded fear that costs must increase and dangers multiply when mining is undertaken.

This paper describes the test work, process design, commissioning and operation of a processing system at the Ergo gold operation that improves the extraction efficiency from gold tailings material. The improvement in recovery is derived from the separation of the gold contained within the sulfides of the tailings material and a dedicated process stream to recover that gold.The sulfides are separated by means of a flotation circuit and that resulting concentrate is subjected to a regrind of below 20 ¦m to enable a greater liberation of the gold. The ultra-fine material is then subjected to a dedicated leach circuit to recover the now exposed gold particles.The case study is an example of the challenges of introducing new technology and methodologies to a well-established operation and thereby attaining improved efficiencies and tangible business benefits.CITATION:Ebell, M B and Capstick, D, 2013. This study was performed to analyze the behavior of the blowing curtain face ventilation system modified with a specially designed regulator, called Wing Regulator. The purpose of the regulator is to extend the airflow penetration depth toward the face and allow effective face ventilation at curtain setback up to 13.7m (45ft) from the face. A small scale model of the Wing Regulator was successfully tested in the Mine Ventilation Laboratory at the University of Kentucky. Then a prototype of the proposed regulator was tested in full-scale in mine environment. Series of three dimensional simulations were performed to support this research using validated CFD code. This paper presents results of the performed studies and discuses the advantages of using the Wing Regulator. Presented information relates to the US Provisional Patent Application No 61/818,112.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

The solutions to unsteady-state gas flow in a radial system have been reviewed in order to aid in the interpretation of drawdown data. It has been the practice to evaluate the time and rate conversion constants, directly or indirectly, by using reservoir data. This paper presents a method of determining these constants from drawdown data. A simplified approach to the de-termination for the various boundary conditions is presented. An example of a problem which illustrates the use of this theory appears in the appendix. "A new method is introduced for the simulation by computer of the flow of liquid underground. The method has application in simulating, for example, liquid withdrawal systems, injection systems or injection-well systems. The computer simulation of liquid flow permits the utilization of the known properties of the rock in developing a model of the permeable rock mass.The flow properties of the rock at a specific site arc generated statistically using a random number generator. After defining in this manner the rock properties of each element in the computer grid, the streamlines or flow paths of the liquid are traced using the new method. The simulation is designed especially for computers. The meandering character of the liquids paths is displayed clearly as the fluid moves underground, thus providing the technical information required for the control of the movement of liquid."

A vertical tube, 8 m long and 2.5 cm in diameter, electrically heated to 650°C throughout the majority of its height, was used to study the-effect of ore feed rate and hydrogen flow rate on the reduction of fine iron ore particles. A correlation could be obtained between the combined effect of the amount of reducing gas and reduction time and the per-cent reduction. The results suggest that a method based on the reduction of fine iron ores while falling through up-streaming hydrogen cannot be recommended for industrial application.

A low-cost methodology that allows the determination of in situ stresses using oriented core specimens has been investigated. The technique can be used to determine the stresses during the early stages of a project, even in undeveloped areas of a mine. The research aim was to compare the experimental results estimated by the Acoustic Emission and Deformation Rate Analysis methods with those estimated by conventional Hollow Inclusion cell measurements. The studies have been focused on full stress tensor determination from a single oriented rock core. In all cases the rock core specimens recollected the in situ stresses reasonably well compared with the standard overcoring method.

"INTRODUCTION During the Bureau's extensive program of investigating possible domestic sources of manganese, an are-dressing study was conducted in its laboratories at Salt Lake City, Utah, on a sample of oxide manganese ore representative of vein material from the Ophir Hill mine at Ophir, Tooele County, Utah. The sample (obtained by blasting down and mixing a portion of the vein) was submitted by the Ophir Development Co. of Ophir, Utah. As the ore was too law in grade to be acceptable for direct production of ferromanganese, it was tested to determine its amenability to concentration by ore-dressing methods.At the beginning of the investigation of manganese-ore beneficiation in December 1940, the only product marketable to Metals Reserve Company was ferrograde manganese, grade B, the requirements for which follow: Mn, min., 48 percent; Fe, max., 7 percent; Si02, max., 10 percent; P, max., 0.18 percent; A1203, max., 6 percent; Zn, max., 1 percent.Later, the specifications were modified gradually. As of May 15, 1943, manganese products were acceptable if they contained over 35 percent manganese and less than 3 percent zinc and 1 percent phosphorus. Prices were based upon material containing 48 percent manganese, 6.0 percent iron, and 11 percent silica plus alumina. Premium were paid for manganese content in excess of, 48 percent and iron content below 6 percent, penalties being imposed upon products containing less than 48 percent manganese or more than 6 percent iron or more than 11 percent silica plus alumina. The specifications for commercial manganese further required that maximum particle size be 12 inches and that 75 percent of the product be coarser than 20-mesh. Therefore, fine material, such as table and flotation concentrates, had to be nodulized or sintered. In addition, carbonate manganese ores were not acceptable unless calcined."

Simplot Phosphates produces high quality phosphate fertilizer through open pit mining. The operation near Vernal, UT began as a three-pass mining process carried out with drill and blast followed by the combined effort of shovel-truck and dozer material removal. The first two passes removed the overburden and the final pass mined the relatively hard phosphate ore for processing at the mill. Vertical blastholes were employed in all of the mining passes.

The Waihi Gold Mine is situated in a high rainfall area (annual average of over 2 m) on the North Island of New Zealand. Water treatment and discharge at the mine has been ongoing for the last 25 years. The first water treatment plant consisted of a æstandardÆ water treatment facility (ferric chloride precipitation) and cyanide detoxification. With time the project has expanded and the volumes of water increased requiring additional treatment methods (reverse osmosis) to meet the water quality for discharge. "This paper describes the development and some typical applications of Wemco's large-capacity flotation machines, the No. 120 and the No. 144, with volumes of 300 and 500 cubic feet, respectively. During the 1960's, it became obvious that low-grade orebodies would be mined at high tonnage rates - plants and grinding mills would be larger, which would create a demand for larger flotation equipment. To meet this demand, Wemco developed a single-mechanism, 300-cubicfoot cell, having five times the volume of the standard No. 66 cell. The average production rate of the No. 66 cell on porphyry copper ore was 100 tpd per cell; and it was our intention that the No. 120 (300-cu. ft) cell would handle 500 tpd per cell, with at least equal metallurgical results and power consumption per ton. The success and industry acceptance of the No. 120 cell has since led to the development of a larger cell, the No. 144, having a volume of 500 cubic feet."

Manganiferous carbonate slates of the Cuyuna range, which are part of the unoxidized thin-budded iron formation, represent a large potential source of manganese. This report details recent bench-scale research by the Federal Bureau of Mines in applying mineral-dressing techniques to these materials in order to investigate their potential uses. Work outlined in the report was directed toward the production of concentrates usable as iron-blast furnace feed, but an equally important objective might have been to furnish an enriched feed for extractive processes for recovering manganese. Flotation concentrates were prepared that contained 11.1 percent manganese, 27.8 percent iron, and 12.2 percent silica, with recoveries of 73 percent of the manganese and 48 percent of the iron. Calculated analysis for a simulated sinter suggests a product containing 16.0 percent manganese, 40.2 percent iron, and 17.6 percent silica, with 31 percent recovery of the dry weight of the ore. The silica in the flotation concentrates was due to quartz and iron silicates. Substantial quantities of the iron silicates (stilpnomelane and smaller amounts of minnesotaite) were present in the slate, and the need to reject these minerals limited the recovery of iron. The sintered flotation concentrate would be usable as ferruginous manganese ore for iron blast-furnace feed because of its favorable manganese silica ratio. The unsintered flotation concentrates, representing 45 percent of the feed weight and containing manganese enriched in the ratio of 1.6 : 1, also could be used as feed to processes for extracting manganese.

Maximum fan efficiency can only be obtained when the fan has the correct combination of size, speed, and blade setting to provide the required flow of air against the mine resistance. As the mine grows older, resistance decreases unless old workings flow is restricted, and new combinations of speed and blade setting or different fan sizes may provide greater economy.

Household zinc based batteries contain some heavy metals such as zinc, manganese and mercury. There is a large effort from manufacturers in order to eliminate the last one. As a municipal waste, the disposal of batteries has become an increasing worry. The aim of the present work was to characterize dry batteries scraps, and establish a flowsheet for their processing. This was done using unit operations of mineral processing and parameters and yields of each stage have been defined. Such procedures have been chosen due to their low cost. The operations were hammer mill grinding, size separation, magnetic separation and specific weight separation in water. The characterization step was done through chemical analysis and x-ray difiactometry. After size classification, it was verified that 76.6% of the total amount of zinc was over 1.70mm. This fiaction was constituted basically of zinc and some coarse pieces from the steel body, paper and plastics. This fraction was submitted to magnetic separation followed by specific weight separation in water. A visual examination showed that during the grinding process, graphite was concentrated in the finer fractions. Manganese concentration in the fractions over 6,35mm was less than 2%. This means that there was low contamination by the paste in this fraction. It was due to the entrapment of the paste by steel scraps (from the body) and zinc (from the cup) during grinding.

"Effect of attrition scrubbing on the recovery of platinum group metals(PGMs) from automotive catalytic converter was discussed. The attrition scrubbing as comminution and separation process was effective for the recovery of the catalyst layer, ?-alumina, from ceramic supporting matrix, cordierite, by physical impact and shearing action between particles in the scrubbing vessel. The catalyst layer was dislodged from the surface of the supporting matrix into fine particles less than 45µm by attrition scrubbing. The production of fine fraction less than 45µm increased as the residence time for attrition scrubbing increased. The fine fraction obtained at the residence time of 40min contained 19.25% CeO2, 1.93% ZrO2 and 418.8ppp PGMs. The recovery of ?-alumina in the fine fraction increased as the residence time increased. Simultaneously, the recoveries of CeO2, ZrO2 and PGMs increased and reached up to 82.9% CeO2, 78.7% ZrO2 and 78.9% PGMs at the attrition scrubbing time of 40min. The production of the fine fraction and recovery of ?- alumina increased when the solid concentration and initial feed size increased.IntroductionThe automobile catalytic converters contain appreciable amount of PGMs. Currently several million tons of used catalytic converters are disposed annually worldwide, each containing about 0.5-1g of platinum and 1-2g of all PGMs1). The recovery technologies of PGMs from spent catalytic converters have been thoroughly reviewed by numerous researchers since last decades. Two types of methods, wet and dry processes, have been commercially operated. In the wet process, the PGMs on the spent catalytic converters were dissolved mostly in the form of chlorocomplex, MCl6 2-, by contacting with aqueous solutions. Subsequently the resulting solutions are treated to concentrate and the precious metal ions are reduced by introducing metals such as Al, Fe and Zn in the concentrated system2). In the dry process, the spent catalytic converters are melted, in some case with CaO, at an elevated temperature to produce a low viscous slag. The PGMs in the melt are separated by allowing them to adsorb on Fe or Cu having high specific gravity7). Although highly pure precious metals could be obtainable, the recovery technologies of PGMs currently operated seem not to be cost-effective since PGMs embedded in these types of catalytic converters are present in very small quantities."

Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.
