MINEMET RECHERCHE (IMETAL Group, formerly Le Nickel-Penarroya-Mokta) has studied on a laboratory scale and patented a new process to recover metal values -copper- from sulphide ores and concentrates. It combines a cupric leaching, solvent extraction and copper sulphate electrowinning according to the main following steps - A direct and selective leaching of copper sulphide ores or concentrates at atmospheric pressure with cupric chloride to form cuprous and ferrous chlorides and elemental sulphur. Pyrite remains in the sulphur residue. - The leach solution is separated into two parts -In the first one, air is injected to precipitate iron as goethite. The oxidation step can be easily realized at atmospheric pressure by maintaining an excess of cuprous and-ferrous chlorides in the liquor. Copper is extracted from the second part as cupric ion by an LIX reagent. Direct injection or air in the mixing chamber maintains good extraction conditions, so that only one mixer settler is required. - Iron, in the form of ferrous ion, is not coextracted. - Copper is stripped from the organic phase, transferred into a sulfuric phase and sent to sulphate electrowinning cells, which are now conventional in copper metallurgy. - Only electricity and air are required. After a feasibility study, the next step will be to develop it on a pilot and commercial scale.

Many of the trace elements found in coal are associated with mineral matter, making it possible to remove them by physical coal cleaning. As part of work funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, both conventional and advanced coal cleaning processes were found to provide large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements that, if released into the atmosphere, are considered to be potentially toxic or environmentally harmful. Advanced physical cleaning technologies appear to provide greater reductions than conventional technologies. Chemical cleaning processes may also remove many trace elements, possibly including organically-bound elements such as beryllium. Care must be taken in the disposal of coal cleaning plant refuse because oxidation and leaching of this material can create highly acidic leachate and many trace elements are mobile in an acid environment. Laboratory leaching procedures are potentially useful in determining the degree of risk of water contamination by trace elements should an acid environment form.

Epithermal Au-Ag deposits form in the upper 1 km of the crust and are therefore best preserved in the less eroded Pacific rim arcs, although also recognised elsewhere. Two profoundly different ore fluid types give rise to low and high-sulfidation styles apparent as variations in ore and gangue mineralogy as well as characteristic zoned wall rock alteration. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits are derived from near neutral composite magmatic-meteoric fluids and divided into a group with a stronger intrusion association within arcs grading in time and space from: quartz-sulfide Au + Cu, to carbonate-base metal Au, and the epithermal quartz Au + Ag, whereas in strongly extensional settings the influx of meteoric waters promotes the development of chalcedony-ginguro banded Au-Ag epithermal veins. In the presence of continental crust particularly in Latin America polymetallic Ag-Au veins represent a Ag-rich equivalent of carbonate-base metal Au and passes upwards to chalcedony-ginguro Au-Ag style. By contrast high-sulfidation epithermal deposits are deposited from an acidic magmatic fluid which provided characteristic hydrothermal alteration by reaction with wall rocks grading outwards as mineral assemblages dominated by: vughy silica, alunite, pyrophyllite-diaspore, dickite-kaolin and then illite-smectite neutral clays. Au mineralisation is commonly refractory with enargite deposited dominantly later within the silica zone.Exploration for epithermal Au deposits benefits from an understanding of the controls to mineralisation which commonly give rise to the development of ore shoots with widest and highest Au grade ore zones. In low-sulfidation systems a combination of competent host rocks, dilatant structures, higher grade styles of mineralisation and efficient mechanism of Au deposition, contribute towards ore shoot formation. High-sulfidation epithermal Au systems occur in permeable volcanic and breccia host rocks which are linked by major structures to the magmatic source.CITATION:Corbett, G, 2013. "Industry practice for high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) assessment and sizing relies on tests using pilot-scale machines with 0.7–1.0 m roll diameters. Typically 1–10 t of sample are required, depending on the level of study and resource complexity. This is challenging during early-stage development, which hinders incorporating HPGR into designs. With support from the Canadian Mining Industry Research Organization, researchers at the Norman B. Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering at The University of British Columbia developed bench-scale piston–die press tests (PPTs) that correlate to pilot- and full-scale HPGRs. This paper describes a new regression model to estimate the HPGR-specific throughput rate using both PPT results and an HPGR database. As part of its mine subsidence research program, the Bureau of Mines and the American Electric Power Co. cooperated on a study, conducted at the Price River Coal Co. No. 3 Mine, directed toward developing the capability to estimate the surface subsidence resulting from longwall mining in a geologic, topographic, and mining environment common to coalfields in the Western United States. Subsidence was monitored at the No. 3 Mine over two adjacent longwall panels. The subsidence study area was reduced when the two planned panels were reduced in length because of equipment failure and a mine fire. Subsidence was measured for 21 months. Subsidence continued for 6 months after mining had been completed. A maximum of 2.2 ft of subsidence occurred over the two longwall panels mined at an overburden depth ranging from 300 to 1,500 ft.

"Search Minerals is currently exploring the Port Hope Simpson (PHS) Rare Earth Element District in southeastern Labrador, Canada. The Foxtrot Rare Earth Element (REE) Project in the PHS District has a 43-101 resource estimate consisting of 3,410,000 tonnes of Indicated Mineral Resources and 5,850,000 tonnes of Inferred Mineral Resources. The indicated and inferred resources contain 1.07% and 0.98% total rare earth element oxide (including yttrium), respectively. The dysprosium and neodymium grades are particularly attractive at 218 ppm Dy2O3 and 1687 ppm Nd2O3 for the indicated resources and 208 ppm Dy2O3 and 1494 ppm Nd2O3 for the inferred resources. The mineralization remains open along strike and at depth and is only one of a number of attractive exploration targets in the Port Hope Simpson area. The REE minerals fergusonite and allanite are present. The ore can be beneficiated by gravity, magnetic separation and flotation to a recovery of +80% for the individual REE. Acid bake and water leaching may be used to extract REE into solution for subsequent purification and recovery. The extraction range for single stage leach tests were 91-96% for Nd, 84-87% for Tm and 92-94 % for Dy with modest acid consumptions. INTRODUCTIONSearch Minerals Inc. (Search) is exploring the 100% owned Port Hope - Simpson District in Labrador, Canada for rare earth elements (REE). This District is approximately 135 km by 12 km in size, and is highly prospective for heavy and light rare earth elements. A total of 11 REE prospects have been discovered in the District to date, including the Foxtrot. In addition, Search is exploring in the 100% owned Henley Harbour region and has joint ventures with Quest Rare Minerals in the Strange Lake region, and with Great Western Minerals Group in the Red Wine complex, all in Labrador. These exploration locations are illustrated in the Figure 1. The focus of this paper is the investigation of the mineralogy and processing of Foxtrot REE materials. The Foxtrot resource falls within the claims held by Search in the Port Hope Simpson REE District. The infrastructure available at Foxtrot is excellent with a deep water port, air strip and road and power infrastructure at Port Hope Simpson. Over $7 Million has been spent to date on exploration and development of the District. The Foxtrot has been explored using prospecting geochemical methods, geophysics (airborne and ground), channel sampling of surface outcrops, mapping and three phases of drilling (18,934 m total)."

Coal mining legislation makes frequent reference to æSafety Management SystemsÆ but there is a chronic shortage of useful guidance material as to how these might be applied to hazardous exposures. Several studies have indicated that for each death that is reported as a result of an industrial æaccidentÆ, there are five deaths that caused by occupational exposures. Because the deaths from occupational exposures do not occur on site and often well after employment has ceased, they are generally unreported. Improved access to mortality data from coroners, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and superannuation service providers (early claims from death and total permanent disability), has given rise to some analysis of death and disability data that provides evidence that there are emerging opportunities to develop and improve safety management systems for hazardous occupational exposures. Issues explored include how safety management systems might be developed in relation to dusts and chemicals and other hazardous exposures to ensure the risk of disorders with long latency periods are reliably assessed and the exposures effectively managed. The current standards and guidelines which refer to safety management systems in general or to management of exposure related hazards are examined. Many standards are based on dose-response studies that provide for an acceptable percentage of workers to suffer adverse health outcomes. An alternative management system might be to apply dose-response relations to health surveillance to identify æat riskÆ individuals and effectively manage health and related safety risk at an early stage.

This Bureau of Mines report discusses the principles of using computers to draw maps and plot geologic data of mining areas. The types of maps that can be drawn by a computer are reviewed, using as examples two separate areas where poor roof and gas emissions caused mining problems. Such maps can be used not only to help identify problem areas, but also to predict areas where problems could occur, thus giving mine operators time to work out solutions prior to mining. The average cost of a computer-drawn map for a mine property is less than $100, including computer time and man-hours for data preparation.

Spirals, the most common equipment for the separation of heavy minerals such as chromite, are greatly affected by size distribution and the liberation degree (hence the specific gravity and size) of the feed particles. In this study, the efficiency of spirals in separation of low-grade chromite particles has been investigated by studying the distribution of grade, size distribution and liberation degree of feed, concentrate, and tailings of spiral. For this purpose, mass balance constraints were applied to the spiral-containing chromite processing circuit. Afterwards, the grade variations and size distributions have been investigated. According to the results, when the feed to the spiral has a larger size distribution, the enrichment ratio of the feed is 1.32 and, with the smaller feed size, this value has increased to 1.99. When the spiral feed has a larger size distribution and higher specific gravity, the recovery of chromite increases with increasing particle size up to 250 microns, and then with increasing particle size, recovery decreases with a relatively steep slope. Evaluation of spiral efficiency with respect to particle liberation degree has also shown that despite the high degree of liberation of spiral feed in size fractions smaller than 75 microns (88.9%), the liberation degree of spiral concentrate and tail in this faction is equal to and less than that of feed, which can indicate poor spiral performance in these size fractions.

The present study reports a processing route to recover metals from integrated circuits of discarded random access memory (RAM) units containing ~ 66% printed circuit boards and ~ 33% integrated circuits. The integrated circuits are manually separated, grounded, classified, and subjected to water fluidization for the effective separation of metals. The significant separation was achieved via water fluidization, and the underflow fraction was magnetically separated. The magnetic fraction was thermally exposed in a muffle furnace, and the process optimization was carried out using a Box-Behnken statistical design. The detailed characterization at subsequent steps significantly aids the understanding of metal-plastic separation and enrichment. A concentrate containing 97% metals (Fe-59%, Ni-9.5%, Cu-7.7%, Sn-13.4%, Pb-5.6%, Ag-1.6%) with 96 wt% recovery can be recovered from discarded IC units. The process pursued is simple, adaptable, and environment-friendly, and the product can be used in conventional smelters.

The design of most underground support systems has largely been based upon empirical rules. This design method has proven to be satisfactory in most cases as witnessed by the number of successfully completed works. However, the adequacy of this approach to the developing technology of ground support systems associated with deep excavation has not been substantiated. In cases where the material has definite time-dependent behavior parameters, rules of past experience become extremely vague and conservative. The Spokane Mining Research Center is currently engaged in extensive research to develop rational design methods for underground structures which will account for the many interacting factors such as in-situ properties of the rock mass, excavation methods, proposed types of support system, construction sequence, and environmental variables. The reconstruction of the British mining industry which began shortly after nationalisation in 1947 continued until well into the 1950s with the support of the Government. This support diminished as plentiful supplies of cheap oil from the middle East made many coalmines un¬economic. The planned rundown which followed was foreshadowed in the 1965 White Paper which outlined the financial measures to speed the closure of uneconomic collieries. The decline appeared likely to continue into the 21st century as the role of coal in UK energy requirements became less and less significant. This policy was well on course in 1973 when the oil crisis led to a complete reappraisal of the position. A Government examination in 1974 of the coal industry then supported the National Coal Board's general strategy of major capital investment as set out in its 'Plan for Coal' (1). Plan for Coal aimed at halting the intended decline in the industry's capacity and restoring it to 120 million tons of deep mined output in 1985. The Plan proposed action along the following lines (a) increase output by major Investment in construction at existing collieries with sufficient reserves to give 13 million tons per annum extra output (b) invest in extending the life of existing collieries by gaining access to additional reserves, to give 12 million tons per annum extra output © by sinking new mines, produce an extra 20 million tons per annum. Figure 1 shows the contribution (2) expected from each of the three sources up to 1990/1. The measures taken were expected to offset the inevitable exhaustion of existing pits and provide the additional 40-42 million tons capacity needed to restore annual output in 1985 to 120 million tons. Parallel to this programme for expansion of deep mined output, opencast mining was to produce 10-15 million tons per annum. A recent review however, indicates that new mines are likely to yield only 10 million tons per annum by 1985, mainly owing to the need for public inquiries into proposals for new mining and the resultant fact that planning approval takes 'much longer than originally expected. Nevertheless the objective of 120 million tons deep mined output by 1985 is still considered achievable of means of a greater contribution from existing mines. This programme was originally estimated to cost 2,-56 million dollars at March 1974 prices, out revised estimates of the cost of Plan for Coal indicate that it may now exceed 6,960 million dollars at mid-1977 prices. Plan for Coal includes a substantial investment in new and reconstructed coal preparation plaints. At mid-1977 prices more than 322 million dollars Ls so be invested in coal preparation projects in the UK, at the rate of, about 70 million dollars a year. This rate 3f capital expenditure has been maintained over the past three years and covers investment in a wide range of coal preparation coals for the power station, coking and domestic markets.

Boring of tunnels and shafts in hard rock under high stress conditions is becoming more common as mines and tunnels are developed at greater depths. Under the high stress conditions, fracturing of the often-brittle rock occurs in the walls, backs, and ahead of advancing faces of excavations. Fracturing can have a significant impact on boring activities: sidewall spalling, which affects machine gripper capacity, and fractures can also develop in the rock ahead of the face, leading to blocky rock conditions, which may have a significant effect on machine excavation. Fracturing may develop dynamically, leading to rock bursts manifesting in the form of strain bursts, which can be hazardous and destructive. In brittle rock, fracturing is commonly extensional in nature. The focus of this paper is on fracturing in the face of the excavation. Examples of such fracturing behaviour are described briefly in the paper. Numerical analyses were carried out to predict the initiation of extension fractures and their orientations ahead of excavation surfaces, and the resulting formation of rock slabs/plates, and the stability of these plates. The results should be beneficial for the evaluation of the conditions prior to, and during boring operations.

Fourteen coal samples representing the Flag , Fire Clay , Whitesburg , Amburgy , Upper Elkhorn No. 3 , Upper Elkhorn No. 2 , Upper Elkhorn No. 1 , and Lower Elkhorn beds in Letcher County , Ky . , were carbonized by the Bureau of Mines - American Gas Association ( BM- AGA ) method , and yields of products and physical properties of cokes were determined . The samples tested were high- volatile A bituminous in rank , with dry , mineral - matter- free fixed - carbon contents ranging from 55.3 to 62.2 percent . Five of the samples , as received , were chemically unsuitable for metallurgical use because of excessive ash and/ or sulfur content . Generally , strength indexes of the cokes were low and all of the coals would require blending with higher rank coal to obtain satisfactory blast furnace fuel .

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the role that individual factors play in health and safety (H&S) outcomes in the mining industry. Two surveys, one measuring self-reported routine safety performance and one measuring individual perceived competence in the non-routine knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) critical to emergency response, were administered to two samples of mineworkers in separate research studies over a 2-year period (N=2,020 and 696, respectively). Eight demographic items were common to both surveys and their associations with each performance outcome were tested in response to a series of exploratory research questions.

The first authorization, in November 1940, was for a plant of only several hundred pounds capacity at Boulder City, Nev. Improvements in the process and subsequent additions to some sections have enabled the plant to produce more than 2,000 pounds of manganese per day for substantial periods. By the time pilot-plant operations were suspended in June 1945, over 1,500,000 pounds of metal had been produced. The future of electrolytic manganese production obviously depends not only on satisfactory development of methods but on availability of raw material and demonstration of valuable uses. Investigations of manganese-ore deposits in this country, made since 1938 by the Bureau of Mines, have revealed large amounts of ore suitable for making electrolytic manganese. At first the pilot plant was operated on ore from the Three Kids mine near Las Vegas, Nev. After practical features of the process had been worked out, other ores from throughout the United States were tested in the pilot plant. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results obtained on the following ores: Three Kids; Ladd mine, Tracy, Calif.; Chamberlain, S. Dak., nodules; and ore from Metals Reserve stockpiles at Deming, N. Mex.; Cushman, Ark.; and Philipsburg, Mont.

Shotcrete is a key initial rock support component used in underground mining and civil projects. The strength of shotcrete plays a vital role in providing and deciding the support adequacy. The strength of shotcrete is evaluated by its uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) test that is usually conducted on extracted core samples. Shotcrete cores are commonly extracted from the test panels along the direction of its application; thus, its strength perpendicular to the direction of application is often neglected. The true bearing strength of shotcrete is thereby ignored despite the fact that higher stresses act normal to the direction of its application. Although the anisotropic behavior of shotcrete is well reported, no study has reported extensive testing of this scale and nature. This study reports extensive testing of shotcrete cores extracted from tunnels of a mega hydroelectric project in Pakistan. The study reports 7- and 28-days strength tests of shotcrete cores. The research also investigates the anisotropic behavior of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete and suggests that shotcrete exhibits higher strength perpendicular to the direction of its application.
