Rock joint stiffness is not only a poorly known parameter, but also has no established laboratory measurement procedure. This paper presents methods used to determine the normal and shear stiffnesses of healed joints filled with vapor-altered minerals obtained from the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. Results show that these joints behave linearly up to 85% of their loading history and are stiff with strengths very close to the strength of the intact rock. Factors that might have contributed to the linear behavior of these joints are discussed and areas requiring further investigation are provided. Joint normal stiffness ranges from 7.16 to 64.77 GPa/mm with an average value of 26.93 GPa/mm, while joint shear stiffness averages 11.41 GPa/mm and ranges from 3.09 to 28.41 GPa/mm. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint infilling was calculated from the stiffness of the healed joint. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint filling material averages 7.89 GPa and ranges from 2.15 to 19.43 GPa. Given the pervasive presence of such altered rock, usually in the form of sub-spheroidal 3-D pockets, this property should be of value in any numerical modeling attempting to describe the mechanical behavior of these tuff formations at the level of detail where inclusions might be a factor.

In a short chronological review the development concepts and improvements in steel roadway support are shown. The successful standardization concept of RAG Deutsche Steinkohle and currently used support systems are important topics. The history of optimizing the material properties for the steel arch support with different alloys up to the tempering used today is discussed. The present-day application of the steel support is additionally presented. Today, it represents a system component of modern roadway support also for highly stressed roadways. In addition to the yielding roadway arch support, this overall system - the combination support - consists of the additional components of a rockbolting system and concrete backfilling. The comparison of the application areas for each individual partial system with the overall system illustrates its high performance capability. Actual practical experience with the state of the art typed steel arches are pointed out exemplarily. Understanding the complete system permits the selection of the economically optimal support for all conditions.

The paper presents the development of a spontaneous heating liability index (SHLI) of coal based on a mathematical approach. The parameters for the calculation of this index have been determined by differential scanning calorimetric studies. Thirty-one coal samples representing both fiery and non-fiery coal seams of different ranks have been collected from different Indian coalfields and their SHLI values have been determined. In addition, the susceptibility of these samples to spontaneous combustion has been ascertained by standard crossing-point temperature measurement. The moisture percentage of all the samples has been obtained by proximate analysis. A comparative study between SHLI and crossing-point temperature, along with moisture percentage, indicates that SHLI predicts the proneness of coal to spontaneous heating more accurately.

Occupational hearing loss is a permanent illness with no recovery currently possible. For underground coal mine workers, Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) continues to be a serious health issue. One of the principal and fundamental machines used in underground mining operations is also one of the loudest. Noise generated on the continuous mining machine is the result of 3 operational components: the cutting system, the dust collection system, and the onboard conveying system. During underground acoustic evaluations, the conveyor system noise was observed to be dominant. In order to more closely examine sound generated by the continuous mining machine, sound power levels were measured in a reverberation chamber at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Different chain types and configurations were installed on the conveyor system, and the resulting sound power level ranged from 118 dB(A) to 108 dB(A). Noise generated by the dust collection system was also examined and found to be 107 dB(A).

Operators within the metals market have developed and deployed pneumatic conveying and pneumatic injection technologies. These environmentally supportive and sustain-able solutions have been used to transport raw materials within operating facilities, from storage to silo, as well as injecting these materials directly into the heart of production processes. Operators, such as Codelco in Chile, Corus Steel in the UK, and many others across the World have seen pneumatic injection solutions transform their process and costs. An overview is given of two new developments in mine atmospheric monitoring. A new personal dust monitor (PDM) that gives real-time respirable dust readings is discussed. The unit is mounted within the minerÆs cap lamp battery and internally measures the true particle mass of dust collected on its filter. Samples are available for later mineralogical analysis and results do not exhibit the same sensitivity to water spray as optically-based measurement approaches. The technique achieves microgram-level mass resolution even in the hostile mine environment and reports dust loading data on a continuous basis. The monitor has been evaluated under an Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) grant and is being adopted for statutory mine respirable dust determinations in the United States (US). The monitor has particular application for determining location of high dust sources. It can evaluate the efficiency of engineering means of suppression and other approaches to reducing dust levels. It has been recognised that the PDMÆs unique measurement approach has application to allow real-time atmospheric diesel particulate matter (DPM) monitoring. The industry has no real-time atmospheric DPM monitor at present. Recent surveys in New South Wales and Queensland show significant numbers of miners continue to face full shift DPM exposures in excess of internationally accepted levels. Real-time DPM monitoring will allow the industry to pinpoint high exposure zones where a number of trucks and other vehicles work in areas of poor ventilation. Knowledge of high DPM concentration zones allows efficient modification of work practices to reduce underground minersÆ exposure. Approaches to uses of the DPM form of the monitor and the design of tag boards are discussed. Some outcomes from mine tests with both these new instruments are given.

Studies were carried out to investigate the ultimate soil pressure acting on pile(s) undergoing lateral soil movement in soft clay. A special apparatus has been designed to apply a uniform rectangular profile of lateral soil movement on the rigid pile(s) with pinned head and tip conditions to obtain the ultimate soil pressure. The piles were 16 mm (5/8 in) in diameter. For the pile group tests, the behavior of different number of piles (2, 3, 4, 6 and 9), pile arrangements and center-to-center spacings (3 and 6 diameters) were investigated. In this paper, the group factors of 11 combinations of number of piles, pile arrangements and pile spacings are presented. The group factors are given for individual piles in a pile group as well as for the entire group. Generally, the group factors of individual piles in a group varied significantly according to pile spacing in both directions, and pile arrangement; the group factor of the whole group reduced with an increasing number of piles, and increased with increasing pile spacing. For a pile group with the same number of piles but different pile arrangement, no significant difference was found in the group factors for the entire group.

The results of in-situ geophysical cross-hole tests on improved soil by soil mixing (SM) and jet grouting (JG) are described. This testing was conducted on soil improved by SM and JG columns constructed in the downstream free-field of Tuttle Creek Dam near Manhattan, Kansas as part of the seismic retrofit. Results of similar geophysical testing performed on untreated soil in the vicinity of the Downstream Test Program (DTP) area, as well as beneath the embankment at several locations, are also described and used for comparison purposes. In-situ shear moduli are also compared with those determined in laboratory resonant column tests. The increase in stress wave velocities and associated shear moduli by SM and JG treatment are presented for use in liquefaction potential and seismic deformation analyses of SM or JG treated soil. This data is required to determine the decrease in liquefaction potential and earthquake-induced permanent deformations due to SM or JG with respect to that of untreated soil.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

"Rejected sands from smelting metallurgical process because contain lead and others heavy metals are a problem to dispose as waste in all the countries. A procedure that is being proposed for it is to incorporate it on common clay bodies in the fabrication of structural ceramic products as bricks, blocks and roof tiles. The main goal of this paper is to present the results obtained with mixtures of sands from smelting metallurgical process with common clay from Jundiaí, São Paulo, Brazil. Preliminary incorporation tests (1,0% in weight) were made with hand formed spherical samples. With the higher compression strength of the spheres after drying and firing (950ºC) experiments on bricks production were made for quality technological test. Seven hundred hallow blocks containing 1,0% waste were produced and presented ceramic properties similar to those without sand incorporation. The utilization of computer assisted tomography (CT or CAT-scan)as general non-destructive examination (NDE) technique and as research tool for scientists in South Africa, is limited due to the relative unavailability or nonexistence of such specialized analytical equipment. Many medical hospitals are equipped with X-ray CT scanners for the diagnostic examination of patients but do not easily allow paleontologist or other scientist to utilize their very expensive equipment. As from 2003, Necsa hosts the South African Neutron Radiography (SANRAD) and tomography facility where neutrons from the SAFARI-1 nuclear research reactor and their penetrating power as well as X-rays as a complementing tool, are utilized in many R&D applications. This facility is being made available to HEI and specifically utilized by postgraduate students as part of their studies and/or by industry on an ad hoc commercial basis. The capability of these radiation imaging facilities at Necsa will be demonstrated in areas such as paleontology, geosciences and specifically the physical properties of rock and the distribution of minerals in borehole cores, petrophysics to predict the percentage tar/oil/water content within sandstone samples and others. The penetration capability of neutrons through specimens with a matrix of high atomic number (dense materials) and their ability to be attenuated by low atomic number material (light density) makes neutron imaging complementary to X-ray imaging. The capability of X-ray and gamma radiation for relatively easy penetration through specimens of low atomic number allows for viewing of imbedded high atomic number materials and density variation. X-ray micro focus radiography is capable of resolving objects of micro scale size that are micro distances apart whereas X-ray phase contrast radiography utilizes the wave properties of the electromagnetic spectrum of X-rays to clearly define edges of the specimen under investigation. Many applications with neutrons as imaging probe are successfully applied at several facilities across the globe such as at NIST in USA, Neutra at PSI in Switzerland, and ANTARES at FRM2 in Germany, etc, are documented 4?9, through world conferences on neutron radiography, for example. This is achieved through very well thought through and implemented instrumentation from the production of neutrons to their detection and interpretation of the images. The need arose at Necsa to upgrade the current facility from 42-year-old technology, which was successfully applied in neutron imaging over the past 10 years, to state-of-the-art technology found at European facilities. This initiative started under the auspices of an IAEA-TC programme for the period 2007?2010.

Overexposure to respirable dust remains a widespread health hazard to roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines. Recently implemented mist drilling technology was evaluated for its effectiveness in controlling respirable dust exposures for roof bolting personnel. This work presents the findings from NIOSH field and laboratory studies comparing respirable dust levels on mist drilling roof bolter machines to dust levels measured on machines using a conventional vacuum drilling system. Gravimetric and instantaneous respirable dust samples were collected for multiple drilling cycles. These dust measurements were used to assess the potential dust control capabilities relative to conventional drilling. Controlled laboratory tests found 0.3 mg/m3 more respirable dust with mist drilling than with the conventional vacuum method. A separate field investigation of the two techniques observed higher dust levels around the mist bolting machine.

"The oil sands industry in northern Alberta disposes of the by-products of bitumen extraction into tailings ponds. The mix of tailings sand and mature fines, with gypsum added as a flocculent, constitute a waste stream called consolidated tailings or composite tails (CT). The two main challenges of the tailings disposal process are a chronic shortage of economical containment and the potential mobility of CT deposits in the event of breaching by, for example, long-term erosion, which makes abandonment of tailings ponds more complicated. Thick deposits of CT do not consolidate in adequate time to provide reassurance for abandonment of the CT containment facilities and that is why the containment must be adequately robust or the properties of CT improved for long-term stability. This paper addresses potential solutions to these problems by applying the gravity drainage of CT and quasi-homogeneous construction for containment facilities.Gravity drainage is suggested as a mechanism to facilitate the consolidation of CT in critical areas of the ponds by inserting internal sand layers within the body of the deposit. Critical CT areas are defined as areas around the perimeter of containment. The advantages of this solution are longterm stability of the disposal area by creation of stiff deposits around its perimeter and facilitation of reclamation efforts on its surface.The present solution for containment of CT deposits is not favourable from a materials balance point of view. In general, sand has become a valuable resource as it both forms the primary component of the CT matrix and becomes the containment building material. If sand is required for CT, less is available for dyke construction. This puts additional pressure on the industry as a whole to maximize the use of overburden and interburden for construction of tailings containment structures. Typically, only 50 percent of dry mine waste (overburden + interburden) is incorporated into dyke construction. The remainder of dry waste is stored either in waste dumps or in tailings ponds, consuming valuable in-pond space originally allocated to CT material. Quasi-homogeneous dykes are proposed to contain CT deposits rather than traditional minimum cross-section dykes built of overburden and/or cell sand. The quasi-homogeneous dyke may change the unfavourable material balance and lessen the construction constraints that are presently imposed on the mine/waste disposal process."

Slag fuming has remained a key process for the recovery of Zn, Pb, and minor elements in the integrated flow sheet at Teck Cominco's Trail Operations for more than 75 years. Since the start-up of the KIVCETTM process and the #3 slag fuming furnace in 1997, a range of process intensification projects have been completed to improve metals recoveries and throughput based on improved process control, mechanical modifications, and, most recently, the implementation of oxygen enrichment of the blast air. This latter project, initially named 'nitrogen depletion' and now 'nitrogen oxygen performance enhancement' (NOPE), is the primary focus of this paper. NOPE reduces the amount of heat required to heat the inert nitrogen gas, and therefore more of the energy input can be used for reduction. It also frees up boiler capacity because the inert nitrogen gas does not then have to be cooled down. A dynamic METSIMTM model was developed to determine the opportunities to improve the process capacity and heat balance to both assist with justifying the project and to verify the observed furnace behaviour. Several process safety management issues were also addressed and a few key minor mechanical modifications were made to allow the project to proceed to commercial implementation at 25% blast air oxygen enrichment. Short term plant trials have confirmed the model predictions. The first three months of a long term, continuous trial showed a 6% increase in zinc fuming rate from average furnace performance despite the implementation of a KIVCETTM fluxing change to assist with minor element recovery that was expected to negatively impact the zinc fuming rate by 3 to 5%. This encouraging result is also in line with the model predictions.

The zinc recycling is assuming more and more importance. A lot of zinc secondaries and wastes are ready to be collected and converted to zinc metal. The impurities present in these materials and the technical and economical problems that some traditional ways of treating these materials are facing, call for new technologies. The EZINEX Process, a fully hydrometallurgical process industrially proven to convert oxidised zinc bearing materials directly to zinc cathodes, is an innovative process that can deal with any kind of zinc waste/secondaries in a very powerful way. In this paper the highlights of this process will be shown and discussed to demonstrate the robustness of the process and its economic viability.

Nile sediment was collected as a waste from one of the water treatment plants in Cairo, and subjected to petrographical investigation and granulometric, chemical, and mineralogical analyses. It was expected to find diatomite in that sediment but it was a surprise to find that the diatomite content amounted to about 52.01% by volume in addition to quartz, orthoclase and clay minerals. The latter are represented by montmorillonite and illite minerals. The sediment is light gray in color, soft and has low density and high surface area, such density and surface area generally decrease with temperature. The sediment absorbs 317% of its weight in water. The diatomite skeletons are the main factor responsible for its high porosity producing microporosity and low density, and these particles are concentrated in the very fine silt size fraction (11x2µm). The common diatoms in such sediment include Cyclotella ocellata Pant, and Melosira granulata (Ehr.) Ralfs. It seems that this Nile diatomaceous sediment has many advantages over the fossil diatomite, such as Fayium diatomite in Egypt, with the absence of carbonate minerals that require grinding and calcination those cause destruction of the cellular structure and energy consumption. This Nile diatomaceous sediment can be processed using sequential classification to obtain diatomite concentrate of 88.8% grade at 90.6% recovery, and a middling product of 19.4% grade and 5.8% recovery. The suggested flow sheet is quite simple to produce diatomite product for different industries at a low cost. The unusual particulate structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an ideal mineral to be used as functional filler in a wide range of industries, and as catalyst carriers and insulating material. Concrete is one of the decisive construction materials, also for the AlpTransit Gotthard Tunnel. The client has many requirements, and many are the solution possibilities that concrete systems can offer. Cement producers and concrete admixture manufacturers have been challenged to design and test jointly concrete systems for cast and sprayed concrete. The testing operation followed the scenario laid out by the Gotthard AlpTransit Project management?s instructions ?Testing system for concrete mixes.? Various supplier teams have applied for the concrete systems for sections Amsteg/Erstfeld, section Sedrun and/or sections Bodio/Faido and have also followed through with the tests. As was to be expected, the rate of failed mixes matched the level of the requirements. Thanks to this system, it was nevertheless possible to test complete concrete systems for all sections and to get them approved. The joint ventures tendering for the contracts were allowed to include only approved mix designs in their bids. Workability and durability are of paramount importance for cast and sprayed concrete mixes. Durability is influenced by the chosen mix design where binder concept and well-defined water content, i.e., impermeability, are determinant. Aggregates for AlpTransit are to be considered as given. The concrete mix design also determines workability. Because ambient conditions and also requirements with respect to workability are subjected to change, it is necessary that the mix designs include control measures. The choice and number of components for the concrete systems (cement, additives and admixtures) allow adaptation to changing conditions. For AlpTransit such adaptive measures must meet very strict requirements.

In 2006, McNally International Inc., in a joint venture partner-ship with Aecon Constructors, was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: the Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers and the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS) Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue, both in the Toronto area. These projects comprised a total of 13 km (8 miles) of 2.74 m (9 ft) finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the YDSS. Both contracts required the use of earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) with a precast concrete segmental liner.
