Mercurian e1ectrum (Au-Ag-Hg alloy) is the principal Au-bearing phase in the massive sulphide ores at Trout Lake, Manitoba. The average composition of this phase (in wt %) is 49.2 % Ag. 38.7 % Au and 11.0 % Hg, with ranges of 17.34 to 76.47 % Ag, 1.62 to 79.86 % Au and 1.29 to 30.87 % Hg. Compositional variation reflects solid solution in the a-phase of the Ag-Au-Hg system. Backscatter electron imagery reveals systematic zoning and suggests a general crystallization sequence from metamorphic pore fluids of progressively Ag-rich compositions. Investigation of the occurrence of gold in mill products demonstrates that mercurian electrum accounts for over 90 % of the Au in Trout Lake ore. I Invisible" gold in pyrite (x = 0.72 ppm Au) and arsenopyrite (x 30.2 ppm Au) is confirmed by SIMS analyses, and accounts for 7-10 % of the Au in the ore, and 35 % of the Au lost to the tailings. The remaining 65 % of the Au lost to the tailings consists principally of mercurian electrum locked with pyrite. No significant losses of mercurian electrum in the size range amenable to flotation and/or regrinding is indicated.

This article is part of a presentation Strauss made Dec. 3, 1988 at the sixth annual American Mining Hall of Fame (AMHofF) banquet in Tucson, AZ. At the banquet, the Mining Club of the Southwest honored Strauss by naming him the 1988 recipient to the AMHofF. (Industry newswatch, page 6). Introduction In the last two decades, there have been two previous periods of sharply rising copper prices. One was in 1973-74; the other in 1979-80. In both cases, a short period of high copper prices was followed by steep and prolonged periods of low prices. In the language of the market analyst, the high prices were called spikes. Is it likely, then, that three or four years from now the present price of copper will show up as a spike in the charts? There are substantial differences between the current position and the markets of 1973-74 and 1979-80. In 1973-74, US copper prices were subject to government-imposed price ceilings of $0.60 per lb through early December, 1973. These were increased to $0.68 per lb through May, 1974. Meanwhile, mines outside the United States were free of restraint. Rising demand in London pushed the price above $1 per lb in the third quarter of 1973. In early April 1974, it reached a peak of $1.50 a lb. In May of that year, the US ceilings were removed and the domestic price began to rise. What were the causes of this price strength? While ceilings held the domestic price below the world market, domestic consumers acquired all the tonnage offered by US mines. Meanwhile, in the world market, buyers feared prolonged shortages. The Club of Rome had warned that world economic growth would be limited by impending depletion of mineral resources. There was al so concern about a copper cartel that might increase copper prices even more. In early 1974, at a special United Nations session, developing-country spokesmen warned the industrialized world to expect high commodity prices. Also adding to the concerns of copper buyers was the fear that when US wage contracts expired in mid-1974, protracted strikes might ensue. The combined effect of this atmosphere was that consumers accumulated large amounts of copper, far above their normal carry. By midsummer, the position changed radically. While some strikes did occur in the United States, they proved short-lived. The most significant development was a massive economic recession. The energy crisis was causing enormous dislocations in the world economy. Construction activities were sharply reduced and automobile sales plummeted. Public confidence was shaken. Copper sales fell precipitately as consumers decided to draw down their swollen inventories. The price came down too. In April 1974, the London price- as noted-was $1.50 per lb. By the end of the year, it was down to $0.57 per lb. In 1973-74, the copper price rise was fed by fears of shortages, cartels, and strikes. In 1979-80, the market rose on the strength of good demand plus political and military instability. The price rise was also fed by inflationary trends, exemplified by speculation in precious metals. Prior to this second spike in copper prices, the market had been depressed despite economic recovery. Despite reduced US output, copper production in the rest of the world was increasing. Though consumption was rising, surplus stocks reached unprecedented levels. At the end of 1977, the aggregate of stocks at the refineries and in the exchange warehouses was 1.5 Mt (1.67 million st). That was more than three months' shipments at then rates of consumption. In 1978, the statistical position improved. Shipments of refined copper that year were 8% greater than in 1977. The result was reduced visible stocks but -just as was to be the case in 1984-86 - the price remained depressed. In 1979, an even sharper drop in visible stocks occurred as shipments rose by another 4%. This time, though, the price responded. In December 1978, the price in current dollars had been less than $0.70 per lb. By the end of 1979, it was above $1 per lb. And in the first quarter of 1980, it averaged more than $1.20 per lb. Military and political developments were a factor. The hostage crisis in Iran was followed by the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. To many, it appeared that war might result if the Soviets pushed on into Pakistan. At the same time, speculation drove gold and silver prices to incredible levels. As silver prices rose above $40 per oz), copper above $1 per lb did not seem unreasonable. Then, in March 1980, the precious metals price boom collapsed. Copper prices also retreated, though not as much. In February 1980, the copperprice averaged $1.32 per lb. By December, it had dropped to $0.85 per lb. In 1981 and 1982, the decline continued. The present copper situation Why is the current situation different from these two previous episodes of high prices? First of all, today's inventories are far lower than they were in either 1974 or 1980, when the price declines began. The stocks at refineries and in exchange warehouses are substantially less than they were then. More significantly, consumers today have very limited holdings compared with stocks they carried in 1974 and 1980. Even if faced with a downturn in their own business, copper consumers will not be able to stay out of the market. To the extent they have any business at all, they will have to buy copper. And on the supply side, there is also a significant difference. The year 1988 has been unusual. US production is up sharply, responding to higher prices. But production is little changed in the rest of the Free World. Indeed, several of the major producing countries have mined less copper this year than in 1987 despite the prices increases. Peru has had labor problems that have cut its output. Zambia and Zaire suffer from shortages of expatriate technicians, not to mention spare parts. They also suffer from the failure to maintain equipment or perform adequate development. In Chile, the two largest mines, Chuquicamata and El Teniente, have not met their production targets. Chuquicamata is struggling with high arsenic content in its ore. And, in late 1987, severe rockbursts hampered operations at El Teniente. Grey River Gold Mining Limited (GRGML) has constructed and largely completed the commissioning of an alluvial gold dredge designed to recover gold from a low grade gold deposit in the Grey River Valley, New Zealand. The most important resource that GRGML has are the people who are employed by the organisation. The low grade of the deposit necessitates the requirement to operate the dredge at optimum efficiency, which in turn requires the work force to be of high calibre and continually motivated. The primary prerequisite for employment at GRGML is for employees to be receptive to new ideas and have the adaptability to develop new skills and apply those skills to the changing demands of the workplace.   A continually changing organisational structure is utilised to meet the needs of a changing work environment. The adoption of an innovative site employment agreement allowing for flexible working hours has aided the achievement of good employee productivity and attendance.   Employees gain a higher quality of life by working a roster pattern involving twelve hour shifts and a four day on, four day off pattern.   Employees and management are communicating very well and working together to achieve organisational goals which will ultimately benefit the employees, the shareholders, the local community and the mining industry generally.

"The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."

Theoretical studies carried out on shape analysis supply mathematical tools to analyze the influence of grain shapes on ore beneficiation. In the case of statistic images like those encountered in applied mineralogy parametrical and harmonical analysis methods are used. It is important that the shape parameters are adapted to the specific processes involved in ore beneficiation, while remaining easy to manipulate. The inertia parameters are considered in the scope of granulometric and gravimetric processes It appears that they are able to distinguish between the resulting products where very popular shape parameters are not. The measured statistics are analyzed through discriminant analysis procedures in order to estimate the importance of morphological differentiation and the aptitude of shape parameters to account for this.

The first section of this U.S. Bureau of Mines report includes a discussion of the navigational tasks performed by operators of mobile mining equipment, with the focus on the navigational information and guidance techniques required by continuous mining machine operators. Some previous research and attempts in remote and autonomous navigation of continuous mining machines are mentioned. Issues of research in autonomous navigation of various other mobile robots are presented, with attention focused on their applicability to a continuous mining machine navigating in the mining environment. Conclusions are stated on methods of automating the navigational tasks of a continuous mining machine, and a decision to concentrate initial attempts on the tasks of autonomous face navigation is defended. The second section of this report includes a presentation of the Bureau's proposed solution for autonomous face navigation of a continuous mining machine, which includes the employment of a mobile roof support as a reference for guidance in the face area, and a navigational guidance system for the continuous mining machine.

This work shall consist of furnishing and driving foundation piles of the type and dimensions designated on the plans or in the special provisions including cutting off or building up foundation piles when required. This specification also covers providing test piles and performing loading tests. Piling shall conform to and be installed in accordance with these specifications, and at the location, and to the elevation, penetration and bearing capacity shown on the plans or as directed by the Engineer. Except when test piles are required, the Contractor shall furnish the piles in accordance with the dimensions shown on the plans or special provisions. When test piles are required, the pile lengths shown on the plans are for estimating purposes only and the actual lengths to be furnished for production piles will be determined by the Engineer after the test piles have been driven. The lengths given in the Engineer's order list will include only the lengths anticipated for use in the completed structure. The Contractor shall, with-out added compensation, increase the lengths shown or ordered to provide for fresh heading and for such additional length as may be necessary to suit his method of operation.

"IntroductionIn autogenous mills, grinding of the ore feed is accomplished by the direct action of the variously sized rocks making up the feed on each other and the mill interior. Size reduction is achieved without the addition of grinding media foreign to the mill feed, differing in this respect from rod, ball, and pebble milling. The term ""semi-autogenous"" has entered common usage in the industry to describe autogenous mills to which supplementary grinding ball additions are made to increase the rate at which size reduction of the mill feed occurs, beyond that achieved solely by the action of rock on rock. In a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill, 50Jo to 10% of the mill volume may be occupied by grinding balls, whereas a range of 25% to 45% is more usual in ball milling.The comminution of mineral ores using ""conventional"" techniques has been described in previous papers. In conventional operations, size reduction of mined ore, and liberation of the valuable mineral content, is typically accomplished using flowsheets employing two to four stages of crushing. Crushing is followed by one to three stages of grinding and classification using various combinations of rod, ball, and pebble mills. This paper describes operations employing autogenous or semiautogenous grinding as the principal stage in the comminution process. Primary crusher discharge, or in some instances run of mine ore, is fed directly to an autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding circuit. Final product sizing may be accomplished in a single grinding stage, the mills operating in closed circuit with classification equipment, or in several stages using autogenous and semi-autogenous mills for primary grinding, and ball or pebble mills for secondary grinding. In several operations a portion of the primary mill discharge is crushed in an intermediate comminution step, these circuits being called autogenousball- crusher circuits (ABC). Many different flowsheets exist, but common and important to most are crushed ore stockpiles, reclaim feeder and mill feed conveyor systems, pumps, screens, and classifiers. Autogenous grinding is employed in both wet and dry processes, although today wet predominate."

Fourteen samples of crushed Duluth Complex rock were characterized by the QEM?SEM automated scanning electron microscope image analysis system to evaluate the application of the system to mining waste rock characterization. The system can reliably distinguish the iron sulfides, the copper-iron sulfides and the nickel-iron sulfides. Calcite was distinguished from all other minerals except fluorite. The volumetric abundances were verified by comparing elemental abundances calculated using the QEM"SEM volumetric percentages and appropriate mineral compositions with elemental abundances determined by standard laboratory procedure. The pH and sulfate concentrations of rinse water from laboratory leach experiments correlated well with the mineralogical data.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is not just a catch-cry. It is an essential component of every-day life in many professions, including accountancy, law and public administration. Without realising it, many other professions are undertaking CPD activities in an un-structured way, including mining, metallurgy and geology. Examples include Annual and technical conferences of The Institute, Branch-level technical meetings and in-company training and development programmes and technical exchanges. Whilst approaches to date have undoubtedly helped keep the Australian mining industry at the forefront of mining technology, one cannot presume that technological development will stand still. To meet this challenge, human resource development must keep pace, not only to optimize utilization of technological developments, but more importantly to develop firm bases from which new products, processes and technologies can be developed within Australia.

"The material known as coal has a highly variable composition. As a consequence, coals show a great variation in their physical and chemical properties as a function of coal rank. The situation is further complicated because the preparation engineer must deal with raw coal, as mined. This is an assemblage of coal, upwards of 30% mineral matter and, typically, several percent pyrite. The kind and amount of the mineral constituents is also highly variable from source to source. A knowledge of coal rank and source location, and the kind and amount of associated impurities, is the first step in evaluating the response of a raw coal to preparation procedures. The raw coal must first be characterized before information from one source can be extrapolated to that of another.INTRODUCTIONCoal is a black or brownish-black combustible solid, derived from a heterogeneous mixture of plant remains and associated mineral matter that have undergone chemical and physical metamorphic changes by biological and geological processes without free access to air. It is composed principally of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen with lesser amounts of nitrogen and sulfur. 'Its exact chemical and physical nature has remained poorly defined, because the term 'coal' refers to a broad range of coalified solids ranging in rank from anthracite to a variety of bituminous coals of differing volatile matter content, sub-bituminous coals, and ending with lignite and brown coals. The variation in chemical and physical properties through these ranks is massive. In summary, Luckie's (1988) assertion is apropos: ""There is no such thing as coal; there are coals"". The coal preparation engineer, and, most especially, those scientists and engineers from other disciplines wishing to work with coal, must constantly keep this admonition in mind because what is true for one coal seam is often not directly applicable to another."

Seasonally adjusted new factory orders for primary metals declined in January, February, and March, especially in the steel industry. The decline was part of an apparent slowdown for the entire manufacturing sector. Orders for all durable goods, including not only primary metals, but also clay, glass, and stone products, fabricated metal products, machinery, and transportation equipment, fell in January and February. In March, orders rose a slight 0.8%. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the downturns in durable goods orders in January and February were the first back-to-back declines in 3 years. They were largely attributed to a drop in orders for transportation equipment, mainly auto-mobiles and aircraft, while the small gain in March was due to a surge in aircraft orders. Higher interest rates may be partly responsible for the slowdown in durable goods orders over the past 3 months. The higher rates have also hit the construction industry--another major end-user of minerals. Construction of new homes and apartments fell by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.4% in March, following a 12% decline in February.

General recognition of the potential benefits of utilizing advanced technology has focussed public attention on the organisation of tertiary education. This has produced a situation where opportunities exist for significant changes to be implemented. The challenges to Mining education in this environment of change are analysed with respect to the setting of education objectives, the role of centres of education, course structures and student access to courses. The scope of the analysis includes formal courses for professional education and technical training, and programmes for continuing education and postgraduate research. Previous significant advances in mining technology illustrate the importance of encouraging the establishment of an extensive involvement with mining education. Education cannot be the sole responsibility of professional academic organizations; significant industry participation is essential. Methods of achieving this interaction are discussed. Major changes in techniques available for disseminating information provide a significant incentive to assess the relevance of existing course structures and restrictions on student access to courses. Establishment of a less rigidly progressive system of education is discussed with respect to the development of the full potential of computer based learning. This will expand the availability of mining education to include remote locations. The practical feasibility of such changes and recognition of the value of education as a commercial resource could also increase overseas involvement in Australian mining education. Benefits of such changes and problems that may develop if accreditation systems are not also changed to take account of new technology are outlined.

On June 26, 1988, the Jade Hydrothermal Field was discovered in the Okinawa Trough by the German RV Sonne. This research cruise has taken place within the scope of a German-Japanese cooperative project. The Okinawa Trough, located between the Ryukyu Island Chain and the east coast of China, is an active backarc-basin formed by extension within the continental lithosphere. The Ryukyu arc consists of a nonvolcanic outer arc, forming the main island chain and representing compressive highs of the Asian continental margin, and an inner arc with present-day volcanism in its northern part (Sibuet et al. 1988). The valleys and ridges of the trough are cut across by transverse faults, giving rise to younger volcanic intrusions. The Jade Hydrothermal Field was detected in a caldera-like structure. It is. located at about 27°15,0'N and 127°04,5'E with a maxi- mum water depth of about 1650 m. Data of heat flow measurements show a high anomaly in the cauldron basin with values ranging from around 100 to 800 mw/m2 (Halbach et al. 1989). The hydrothermal vent area was discovered in the northern part of the inside northeast slope of the cauldron in a water depth between about 1300 and 1500 m. The mineralogy of the Joe Mann mine differs from that of other deposits of the Chibougamau area that are exploited by Les Mines Camchib Inc.. It is characterized by very fine first generation gold and very coarse second generation electrurn. Successful milling required adjustments of the processing flowsheet, which includes gravity, flotation, and cyanidation. A study of coarse gold liberation in the gravity/grinding circuit is described. Modifications to the flotation circuit and the reconditioning of a small capacity cyanidation circuit are presented. As a result of the circuit modifications, gold recovery increased from 65 to 81% in flotation and cyanidation. Overall gold recovery increased from 77% to 88-89%. These improvements are mostly attibutable to the recovery of -10 urn gold, whose presence in the Joe Mann ore and original circuit tails had been identified by process mineralogy.

The recession that took hold of the domes-tic mining industry in 1981-82 finally abated somewhat in 1987, resulting from increases in many commodity prices, especially in the metals sector, and from continuing success in lowering operating costs. By no means was the work finished; the mining industry was in a sense entering a new era. The struggle for survival was still very evident for many companies and various commodities, but increasing productivity and profits were accompanied by indications that these trends were more long term than short term. Raw nonfuel minerals produced in the United States during 1987 had an estimated value of $26.3 billion, an increase of $2.9 billion over the 1986 value. This is the fifth consecutive year that the value has increased. Except for a decrease in 1982, the value each year has increased since 1971, or 15 of 16 years. The value of raw metals production increased by an estimated 28%, an impressive improvement since the drastic fall in 1982. Industrial minerals growth was comparatively flat, with an estimated in-crease in value of 0.1 %, continuing a trend of the previous 2 years. Metal mine production dropped considerably in 1982 and maintained its resultant lower level until 1987, when production significantly recovered.

High-grade ore found in a shaft pillar at the Homestake Mine prompted a request for a Bureau of Mines study to determine if selected areas of the shaft pillar could be mined without jeopardizing the shaft. The design approach was to perform a finite-element study of the shaft pillar. Plan view and vertical sections were developed using two-dimensional, elastic, plane strain assumptions. Input into the model consisted of in situ stress measurements geologic mapping rock mass properties, and previous mining history. Results from the study indicated that ore-beating sections of the shaft pillar could be removed within the displacement tolerances acceptable for the shaft. Homestake engineers, using the results of the finite-element study and considering other factors, have designed and are beginning to mine the shaft pillar.

"During the mining process, the insitu material is broken into different size ranges, from very, large pieces to very fine particles. Some of the fine particles become airborne. In underground coal mining, airborne respirable. dust is associated with health and safety of the miners: The amount and size distributions of airborne dust are important parameters to effective dust control measures. The design of underground mine experiments, including sampling procedures and sample analyses methods to determine these parameters are presented in this paper.. A total of fifteen continuous miner cuts were sampled. The amount of dust generated during the cutting process and the relationship between total and respirable airborne dust concentrations and amounts are examined.The amount of respirable dust airborne is on the average only. 0.016% of the respirable dust generated. On the average, 61% of the total .airborne dust measured is in the respirable size range. The amount of respirable airborne' is on the average 36% of the respirable size fraction in the total airborne dust. For equal proportion of rock and coal material cut, rock contributes about twice as much fines (<0.22 mm) as coal. Additional fundamental research is necessary to further the understanding of 'the airborne propensity of respirable dusts in mine atmospheres.INTRODUCTIONMining is a sequential process of breaking, gathering, loading, and transporting the in-situ .materials.' In underground coal mines, duet in both the non-respirable and respirable size ranges is generated and entrained in every phase of the process. Even though large amounts of dust particles' adhere to run-of-mine coals, part of the dust generated becomes airborne (Cheng and Zukovich, 1973). Studies have shown that bit type affects the amount of dust generated'(Evans and Pomeroy, 1966; Kurth et al., 1975; Roepke et al., 1976; Stecklein et al., 1982; and Khair and 'Reddy, 1986). Deep cutting can reduce airborne dust generation (Black and Schmidt, 1977 arid, Black et 1978). Mechanical properties of. coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Laboratory studies have shown that Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) of the coal has a relationship with the amount of respirable. dust generated (Beafi and Ramani, 1979; Moore and Bise, 1984; and Moore, 1986). However, these relationships have not yet been validated with' data from the mines. The amount of dust airborne depends on a number of factors. Suppression of the airborne propensity of dust by water sprays is'widely practiced and is very effective. Water flow rate; pressure and configuration of water sprays have been identified as major factors affecting dust capture by sprays (Courtney and Cheng, 1977; Courtney et al., 1978; and Kissell et al., 1979). Ventilation is a very important means of controlling the dust level at the coal face (Jayaraman, 1977). According to a National Academy of Sciences study (1980), the mechanism of dust generation and the process by which the generated dust becomes airborne are complex and not yet completely understood coal seams are also important factors in dust generation. Dynamic rock anchors are interior fixtures developed by the author which promise to be a revolutionary development in the field of ground control. The fixtures are designed to be placed in the ground with modern roof bolting equipment, such as the type used in the American coal mining industry. They are composed of a plastic form- able anchor tube which serves to fasten a buttress deformed rod which is thrust and turned into the plastic and in turn clamps the roof plate to the rock surface. Plastic tubes 10 to 16 inches in length provide sufficient anchorage to exceed the yield strength of steel rods 5/8, 3/4 or&apos; 7/8 inches in diameter. This paper presents field testing and early work done on the device over the last seven years. Results of pull tests, creep tests, laboratory testing in concrete, and field testing under natural rock conditions demonstrate the uniqueness and effectiveness of this new support system.
