Based on the results of in-situ observations and physical model analysis, a computer simulation method, FEAEBP, has been developed to predict the behaviors of main roof breakage in longwall mining by considering it as a Kirchhoff plate on Winkler elastic foundation. This method in used to investigate the initiation, and development of the breaking process of main roof and its displacement field before and after its breakage. In this paper the simulation method is introduced, characteristics of the displacement field of the main roof is discussed and monitoring variation of the displacement field of the main roof in a Chinese longwall face is demonstrated.

"INTRODUCTIONA successful cyanide destruction process has to ensure environmental compliance at reasonable cost. That this is possible with hydrogen peroxide is shown by the fact that over twenty gold mines either already use H2O2 or intend to start using it within the next few months. "The Edmonton region accounted for 40% of Alberta's sand and gravel production in 1981 (about 12 million m3). Most of this production was by commercial operations (75%) for use in essential public works projects (64% in road and asphalt production).Although the Alberta Geological Survey delineated 1157 million m3 of gravel, a number of areas are considered to be in short supply. An econometric model was used for forecast demand in the region. Predictions, based on this forecast and estimated supply, are that 15% of the region's gravel and 3% of the sand will be consumed by the year 2010.The City of Edmonton is the largest consumer of aggregate in the region. Approximately 40% of the gravel in Edmonton's current supply area (about 55 km radius) will be used by 2010. These estimates are considered optimistic because the supply figures do not account for sterilization of deposits - some has already taken place in the region. If 25% to 50% of Edmonton's current supplies (one major deposit) were sterilized it would result in $1,000 million of additional cost due to increased haulage alone.Information on the value of aggregate resources, the location of sand and gravel deposit s and forecast demand has been made available to all municipalities in the region to aid planners and regulators in effective future use of this important resource.INTRODUCTIONAlberta is the second largest producer of sand and gravel in Canada at ab out 50 million tonnes annually. Value of provincial production exceeded $120 million in 1985. In Albert a, aggregate is used primarily in road and building construction (about 50% and 15%, respectively) and is important in such activities as petroleum exploration, oil sands development and the forestry industry.The Edmonton region (Fig. I) accounts for about 40% of provincial production and has a per capita consumption rate of about 13.4 m3 of sand and gravel per annum. Although Edmonton dominates, with approximately 50% of regional production going into the city, aggregate is produced in every county and municipal district in the region.Sand and gravel is essential to the current way of life in the Edmonton region. The resource is valuable and dwindling. The Alberta Geological Survey (a department of the Alberta Research Council) has collected information on aggregate in this region for the last decade which ca n aid government planners and regulators in pre venting sterilization and misallocation of this critical resource. This paper is a summary of that information."

"The Agnew (also known as the Perseverance) nickel deposit and its northern extension, the Rocky's Reward deposit, form one of the world's largest accumulations of nickel sulphides hosted by komatiites. Agnew was previously classified as an ""intrusive dunite-associated"" deposit . It has now been shown that the sulphides are hosted by komatiite flows which underlie an adcumulate-textured dunite body that crystallized in a large lava channel.The rocks of the mine area have been subjected to a metamorphic temperature of550°C and pressure of up to 3 kb. The komatiites have mostly been reconstituted to olivine-amphibole chlorite assemblages. There is a zoned sequence of enstatite-, anthophylite-, talc- and antigorite-bearing assemblages inwards from the western margin of the ultramatic reflecting variations in the CO/HP ratio of metamorphic fluids.Facing directions are determined from variations in the proportions of metamorphic minerals and in rock compositions which reflect asymmetric layering in the flows . Olivine-sulphides matrix ore is hosted in a single 50 m thick, east-facing flow that is overlain by flows containing massive sulphides. Much of the massive sulphide has been physically remobilized into fold noses, faults and shear zones. Chemical diffusion of ore components has upgraded a sulphide-rich metasedimentary unit where it is in structural contact with massive ore.To the north, the mineralized flow sequence is separated from a stratigraphically higher komatiite sequence, the Perseverance ultramafic complex, by approximately 150 m of felsic meta volcanic and meta sedimentary rocks. Southward, the Perseverance ultramafic grades laterally into an olivine adcumulate body and its lower contact cuts progressively down stratigraphy until it lies directly on top of olivine-sulphide ore of the mineralized flow sequence. This discordant contact is interpreted as the base of a thermal erosion channel formed by a voluminous komatiite lava flow. This contact greatly influenced later deformation of the mineralized flow sequence."

The new building of the Central Bank of Iraq in Baghdad was footed in difficult underground conditions on more than 600 reinforced concrete driven piles, with cross-sectional diameters of 45 x 45 cm and pile lengths of 12.0 to 18.0 m. The necessary embedded depth and the bearing capacity thus reached were established on all 600 drives piles by means of dynamic pile tests. For the calibration of the dynamic pile tests, 6 static pile load tests were carried out. The execution of the construction and the results of the extensive tests on the building site are shown.

The large rotary blast hole drills for hole sizes of 250 to 375 mm in diameter have been utilized by large open pit metal and coal mines for production drilling all over the world. The design of such rotary drills is in most cases about two decades old and it has not been done much in order to apply a modern technology on rotary drilling. The most modern large rotary drill, Tamrock RI 10, consists of an advantageous rotary head with a squirrel cage AC motor controlled by a frequency converter, a beneficial mast structure with a possibility for inclined drilling, hydraulic driven, independent crawlers, and a modern ergonomic cabin to provide a comfortable working condition for the oper- ator. Several automatic features are available as options. The rig has been designed to be operated by one man only. With this modern rig the produc- tion rate can be increased and production cost kept on a low level.

Construction of foundation piles or diaphragm walls through rocky or boulder containing formations has been long-standing difficulty. It has been widely understood that the down-the-hole hammer is the most capable mechanical means but is restricted in drilling diameter by the unavailability of drillhead sufficiently large diameter and the difficulty of disposal of cuttings. A great number of submersible motordrills have been used for the construction of cast-in-place piles and diaphragm walls and the reverse circulation system employed has demonstrated its advantage of the prompt removal of cuttings. The development of multi-head down-the-hole hammer drill combined with reverse circulation system presents a powerful engineering choice for those "hard-to-drill" ground formations. This paper will introduce the features of the system and some actual operation results in the foundation engineering through those hard rocky ground formation in some countries.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. To predict the spontaneous combustion potential of bituminous coals using a simple expression based on an easily acquired coal property. Background Approximately 20% of underground coal mine fires in the United States since 1978 have been attributed to spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion fires in underground mines are most likely to occur in gob area; and are difficult to detect and to extinguish by direct fire fighting methods. Often, sections of the mine or the entire mine must be sealed for long periods, at a great economic loss to the mine operator, mine employees, and the surrounding community. It is conservatively estimated that the cost of scaling a large mine is about $50 million.

The engineering profession generally does not accept vibro-driven piles as bearing piles unless their capacities can be verified by restriking with an impact hammer, which significantly reduces the economic benefits of vibratory driving. In part, the concern for capacity development in piles driven by vibration arises out of observations that vibro-driven piles do not develop capacities equivalent to those driven by impact (e. g., Mosher, 1987). Nonetheless, if capacities are predictable, vibratory installation may be more cost effective than installation by impact, due to savings in time of installation, even if capacities are lower than those of impact-driven piles. Throughout the past few decades, a number of attempts have been made to develop capacity prediction methods for vibro-driven piles, mostly along the same lines as methods for impact-driven piles. That is, (1) totally empirical formulae, (2) power balance / power transfer formulae, and (3) "time domain-nonlinear" (TDN) computational procedures such as the wave equation. Some of the formulae have been based partly on field experience, but the majority have been developed from simple theoretical models with parameters evaluated from laboratory studies. Neither these formulae nor the TDN solutions have been systematically checked (or modified) by recording appropriate field data over a variety of site

Due to highly competitive international coal markets, Stockton mine is bound to produce very high quality coals consistently if it is to maintain and expand its market share. The nature of the deposit is such that coals from various source pits are blended in differing proportions to meet the various coal quality specifications of the customer. The complexity arises due to quality variation within the seam both horizontally and vertically and the fact that up to six different products with completely different quality specifications may have to be produced. With increasing demand for this rare product and with CoalCorp eager to meet this demand comes the requirement for computer methods to handle this highly complex problem of both modelling and scheduling.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria were used in this work to study the effect of bacterial adaptation on the bioleaching of three iron-bearing sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite and arsenopyrite. The change in the pH during the bioleaching process was observed and the mechanism of the bacterial action were discussed. It was found that bacterial adaptation prior to bioleaching, enhanced the degree of sulfide leaching by 2-4 folds over that of non-adapted bacteria. A1 so the bacterial activity was enhanced by 2-4.8 folds. The pH of leaching solutions was decreased by the increase in both adaptation period and bioleaching time. It was also concluded that the mechanisms of bioleaching of iron-bearing sulfide minerals involved both the direct and indirect bacterial action simultaneously.

The paper describes the salient construction features of the Pile foundation work for the Railway viaducts in Algeria. Six viaducts were constructed for execution of the Railway line between Aintemouchent and Benisaf in Algeria. The work was executed by the Indian Railway Construction Company Limited of India (IRCON) for the Algerian National Railways (S.N.T.F.). These six viaducts had multiple spans of 36M resting on hollow piers of heights upto 69M. Most of the piers were founded on piles of 1 and 1.2M dia bored piles going upto 22M deep through cal­careous rocks and were designed for Railway loading in seismically active area. The work involved 356 piles & constituted a very important aspect of the whole work. The concrete in the piles was made with sulphate resistant cement and the integrity of the concrete was tested with Sonic method so as to ensure the quality. The piles were driven with the help of a hydraulic oscillator and the concrete was laid with a tremie pipe. Problems as encountered during execution have been explained.

The New Celebration Gold Mine near Kalgoorlie in Western Australia was commissioned in late 1986 and the CIL treatment plant currently processes 1.7 million tonnes of gold ore annually. The 1988 geological resource was 13.2 million tonnes grading 2.37 g/t Au in several open pittable deposits with the bulk of gold mineralisation occurring as a stockwork in Archaean quartz feldspar porphyry intrusives along a major regional shear zone. Mine planning, scheduling and operating techniques have focused on minimising open pit dilution whilst maintaining production requirements. This paper describes the successful achievement of this aim in extremely variable ground conditions and orebody widths.

A subsidence monitoring program over a longwall panel was established (1) to explore the impacts of dynamic subsidence on the ground surface and structures and (2) to correlate the movements between the structures and their corresponding points on the ground. The program consisted of a transverse line survey and a series of survey points around the structures on the ground surface and their corresponding survey points on the exterior walls of the structures. The vertical displacement of each point can be expressed as: where Si is subsidence at i point; Sif is the final subsidence at i point; F is face location in terms of distance from the i point and SD is seam depth. The development of subsidence can be divided into five stages. Damage to the structures starts at the beginning of the second stage, The maximum damage developed in the middle of the third stage. The relationship of the vertical displacement between ground surface and structures can be expressed as: G = aH + b where G is ground displacement, H is structures displacement, and a and b are constants. The relationship is linear. However, the strain is non-linear and more complicated because of the interaction of the ground surface and structure.

"This report presents the results of a laboratory study undertaken to evaluate ground granulated blast-furnace slag from Algoma Steel Corporation, as a replacement for Portland cement in cemented mine backfill. The evaluation was based on the results of compressive strength tests performed on cylinders cast from mixtures made with a granulated blast-furnace slag and tailings from four different mines in the Sudbury basin. Various percent¬ages of slags and various binder to tailings ratios were used.Tests results show that, in terms of compressive strength, the slag performs as well or better than Portland cement as the binding agent in cemented mine backfill. Lime was found to be a poten¬tially good activator for ground granulated slag in mine backfill applications.A field test was conducted at one of the mines, consisting of placing a mixture of 95.5% ground granulated slag and 0.5% lime into a stope, and inspecting the floor slab as it hardened. The slag performed as expected, considering the backfill mixture proportions used and the preparation of the test site."

The following is a summary of a very recent report prepared at Texas A&M University for the National Cooperative Highway Research Program and entitled "Downdrag on Bitumen Coated Piles". Anytime the soil settles more than the pile, downdrag or negative skin friction will develop. The load in the pile increases with depth up to a certain point and then decreases down to the pile point. This phenomenon has been quoted as being the number one culprit for deep foundation failures. In Chapter 1, an introduction to downdrag is given. The most common criterion for downdrag is to consider it in design as soon as the settlement of the soil surface after pile driving exceeds 0.5 in. Coating piles with bitumen is an effective way of reducing downdrag forces and therefore allows to use smaller piles for the same load. This results in cost savings. Coating piles with bitumen increase the cost of piles by about 33% and therefore the decision to use bitumen is generally based on economic considerations.

"Measurement of the size and elemental characteristics was performed on airborne coal mine dust samples collected by multi-stage cascade impactors as well as channel samples of the geologic materials. Size distributions were obtained using precise weighing techniques on the impactor substrates. Elemental analysis on the samples was performed by the proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) method, a rapid and non-destructive method of multi-element analysis.The various analyses were performed on 9 major and 21 trace elements. The results indicate the importance of intake air and shuttle car movements as sources of dust. The association of coal dust characteristics with channel samples was investigated using the coefficient of proportional similarity as a statistical measure. Results show a strong relationship between major elements and the geologic material being cut but a similar relationship between trace elements and geologic materials is not consistent.1. INTRODUCTIONThe most significant occupational disease in the coal industry is known ·as coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CW'P). While CW'P has existed for centuries, its mechanism of occurrence and association with coal dust has been well understood for only a few decades. In the 1930s, the significance of this disease led state and government officials in the USA to perform extensive epidemiological and environmental studies in the major coalfields. Study of these results plus later studies in the coal producing countries of Europe eventually led to the dust regulations that appear in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969.The impacts of the 1969 act were a productivity decline and increased production cost. Many analysts attributed this in large part to difficulties in complying with the new dust standards (Brezovic 1981). However, compliance was met in most continuous miner sections rather quickly. The remaining problem area is that of longwall mining where the procedures and layout of the minin~ system make it difficult to meet the standards."

Image analysis studies were performed on mill products from laboratory flotation tests of the Zn-Pb ore from the Faro deposit in Yukon, Canada, to determine mineral liberations at specific grinds and to predict recoveries at optimum flotation conditions. The minimum and optimum grinds for liberating sphalerite and galena were predicted from size analysis data for the minerals in large ore pieces, and determined by image analysis studies of the mill products. The determined optimum grinds are about 2 Tyler mesh sizes larger than predicted because sane of the fine grained sphalerite and galena occurs in interstices between coarser grained pyrite and is liberated when the pyrite grains are broken apart. Materials balance calculations were performed on the analyzed values for the liberated and unliberated sphalerite and galenaa to determine their distributions in the mill products. The laboratory flotation tests recovered 74% of the sphalerite and 83% of the galena in Zn and Pb concentrates respectively. The mineral evaluation study indicates that the optimum recovery for sphalerite and galena are 85 and 83% respectively. The company is currently recovering 80% 'of the sphalerite and 82% of the galena.

A mineralogical study of copper anodes and copper anode slimes was carried out to elucidate the silver phases present and the behaviour of silver during copper electrorefining. Most of the silver in the anodes is in metastable solid solution in the copper metal. As the copper dissolves, silver also dissolves, but is rapidly removed from solution by a variety of reactions. Some of the silver is precipitated as Ag by cuprous ions and some is precipitated as a complex CU-Ag-Pb-As-Se oxidate phase. Much of the silver, however, reacts with copper selenides to form, progressively, (CU,Ag) 2se, AgCuSe and Ag2se. The reaction commences at the periphery of the selenide grains and progresses inward; the result is commonly a silver-rich species on the outside of a silver-deficient core. Slimes collected periodically throughout the electrorefining cycle show a progressive silver enrichment of the selenides. Traces of Ag2Te also may be present, but the telluride seems to J:ie a rare constituent of most raw anode slimes.
