Pneumatic stowing was first introduced in longwall mining in the middle twenties. Since that time it has advanced through many stages of development, particularly abroad, which have greatly improved its efficiency and contributed to its growing use. Pneumatic stowing originated in coal mining but has also been adopted in metal mining. This paper discusses the techniques of pneumatic conveying of. stowing material and equipment and applications of pneumatic stowing.

Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. Develop an improved downhole geophone system with enhanced signal/noise ratio for collecting cross-hole seismic data used in tomographic reconstructions. Background The Bureau of Mines is conducting research in the use of cross-hole seismic tomography for detecting and monitoring leach solution flow during in situ mining. This technique requires the use of a downhole seismic energy source in one borehole and a downhole wall-locking receiver (geophone) in another borehole separated from the first by the region to be investigated. Bureau research personnel chose a commercially available air gun for use as the downhole seismic energy source. Unfortunately, commercially available downhole wall-locking geophones that the Bureau tested were difficult to operate in the field, often unreliable and generally inadequate in terms of their signal/noise ratio. Therefore, research personnel began to experiment with an alternative down-hole geophone design that could be used to collect adequate data in a wide variety of borehole and cross-hole field situations. Approach An attractive alternative geophone design would be one that would incorporate a pneumatically operated wall-locking system. As an integral part of the Bureau's existing field system, a portable, high- pressure/low-volume air compressor would have sufficient capacity to operate the air gun as well as several small high-pressure pneumatic linear actuators. This approach was the simplest and most compatible with the research activities being conducted at the site.

"(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Podiform chromitites are commonly found in the Moho transition zone to the mantle section of ophiolites, but have been very rarely found from the current ocean floor, even though some ophiolites are considered as a slice of oceanic lithosphere. One of the factors controlling podiform chromitite formation is the chemistry of host mantle peridotite; an intermediately refractory harzburgite is the optimum host for chromitites. This harzburgite represents the most common lithology of the oceanic lithosphere, where the peridotite-melt reaction, which is another condition, is possibly common there. The oceanic lithosphere mantle is thus a good host for podiform chromitites. The apparent rarity of documented oceanic chromitites is solely due to under-sampling of mantle materials from the fast-spreading ridge and the segment centre of slow-spreading ridges. Some ophiolitic chromitites formed not from genuine mid-ocean-ridge basalt (MORB) but from wet MORB due to the situation of typical ophiolites, which formed not at ordinary mid-ocean ridges but at supra-subduction zone spreading centres.CITATION:Arai, S, 2015. The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a new 2500 STPD gold operation. The control system of the mine and milling operations are a hybrid of DCS (Distributed Control System) control and PLC (Programming Logic Controller) control. A DeltaV DCS system serves as the main control and operation platform while the PLCs operate a multitude of vendor specific packages. The communication backbone of the DCS system is a hybrid of star and ring fiber optic topology, which provides reliability and flexibility. The communication between the DCS and PLCs is typically facilitated by serial communication. This communication insures the integrity of the whole control system.

IN his inaugural address in 1949, President Truman made a policy declaration which launched the foreign technical assistance program known to the world as Point Four. Congress passed Public Law 535 defining the scope of the program and holding activities to certain limitations. It also provided $34.5 million for the first fiscal year. The Technical Cooperation Administration was established within the Department of State to coordinate and direct a program to include "economic, engineering, medical, educational, agricultural, fishery, mineral and fiscal surveys, demonstration, training and similar projects." The mineral programs of Point Four have been staffed and managed by two agencies of the Department of Interior, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines. The Geological Survey is concerned primarily with water-supply problems, the discovery of mineral deposits, and the determination of habit, shape, and grade of mineral deposits. The Bureau of Mines is concerned with determining the commercial potentialities of mineral deposits, mineral technology, and the production and distribution of mineral commodities. Mineral projects comprised only 1 pet of the first year's budget. In spite of the relatively insignificant expenditure compared to those for food, agriculture, and health, a commendable record has been achieved.

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

Solid particles, especially oxides/hydroxides, develop an electrical charge on their surface when submerged in aqueous solution. Parks was able to relate PZC (point of zero charge) of an oxide to its minimum solubility and isoelectric point. Dzombak has compiled an extensive database for adsorption reactions on ferrihydrite surfaces using the double layer theory. The equilibrium calculational program, STABCAL has been used to extend the considerations of Parks and Stumm. The PZC for many hydroxides, complex oxides, and non-oxides have been investigated and the results are reported in the literature. Removal of arsenic and metals by adsorption on ferrihydrite as the substrate has been computed using ST ABCAL and the computational results are compared to experimental data. Absorbents other than ferrihydrite such as aluminum hydroxide are also discussed.

Amongst the unavoidable studies of the mining engineer who desires to reach the maximum efficiency, is the subject of patents. With the fundamental principles of the patent laws of this and other leading countries he should of course befamiliar, but still more should he keep abreast of that practical knowledge which will enable him to act or advise wisely when the patenting of a new invention, or the sale, purchasing, or adoption of a new patented machine or process becomes amatter for consideration. As every engineer worthy of the name is an inventor and more particularly every mining engineer he has a direct interest in watching the progress of legislation and administration concerning patent monopolies.His worldly prospects may indeed, to a considerable extent, depend upon the defeat of bad patent laws and the removal of incompetent officials, or the appointment of better ones. Better patent administration is always in Australia a valid requirement, and until engineers generally take up and press the demand, bad administration is likely to continue. The paper examines three types of polar zoning of ore-forming and associated elements that can be detected from geochemical data. Polar zoning is mapped in the form of geochemical ore systems of various ranks. Various types of polar zoning can be found in some systems, which present a general geochemical model of the ore object. The genetic basis of zoning is examined from the perspective of the conception of geoelectrochemical redistribution of matter, including ore-forming elements. The volume of the geochemical ore system may be used in the prognosis of resources for every rank.

A general outline is given for the determination of copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, cadmium, bismuth, manganese, uranium, molybdenum, vanadium, sulphate and fluoride by polarographic or amperometric methods in a variety of ores or metallurgical products. The detection of oxygen in gas mixtures by an amperometric method used as a safety device is also discussed. Introduction I N this paper, a general outline will be given of the polarographic and amperometric methods used for the chemical analysis of various ores and metallurgical products in the Chemical Analysis Section of the Extraction Metallurgy Division of the Mines Branch. The methods to be discussed will be confined to those based on the use of normal D.C. polarography and will not include those methods which utilize a cathode-ray, square wave, pulse or A.C. type of polarograph. In England, the provision of aggregate is determined by the historical relationship between construction and aggregate consumption. This approach does not necessarily lead to sustainable decision-making and can be seen as being driven by political expediency, rather than reasonable environmental consideration. The introduction of the statutory requirement for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) in the UK has provided the opportunity to examine this issue on a more rational basis. This paper provides a practical application of a SEA based approach, to the provision of aggregates at a regional level. The process, underpinned by relevant information on resources and environmental assets, suggests that alternative supply scenarios for aggregate provision are tested in a transparent, consistent manner with increased genuine stakeholder consultation. It supports a move away from "predict and provide" approaches to one where aggregates are sourced with the best balance of environmental costs and benefits.

A aplicação de ligas de NiTi como biomateriais exige que sua superfície tenha um excelente acabamento final, para garantir a alta resistência à corrosão e a biocompatibilidade. O polimento eletrolítico é um processo capaz de diminuir as imperfeições da superfície, sem alterar as propriedades do material, e de formar uma fina camada protetora de TiO2. Nesse estudo, foram realizados eletropolimentos em fios superelásticos e com memória de forma, usando dois eletrólitos ácidos distintos. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível concluir que a solução de ácido sulfúrico produz superfícies mais homogêneas do que o de ácido perclórico, para os mesmos tempos de polimento, e se apresenta como uma boa alternativa para o tratamento superficial de ligas superelásticas e martensíticas de para sua aplicação como biomateriais.

No presente trabalho busca-se avaliar o comportamento do solo virgem e com os resíduos, compactado, uma alternativa para área de Construção Civil. O estudo tem o objetivo de avaliar o solo (classificado como solo laterítico); e solo composto de polipropileno reciclado (rPP) e pó de madeira (PM); caracterizando a forma física e mecânica de rPP/PM para aterro. Neste trabalho, investiga-se a influencia dessas adições no comportamento mecânico de camadas compactadas de solo, avaliando o efeito do teor de composto rPP/PM. As amostras de polipropileno reciclado (rPP), e serragem (PM), foram separadas cada uma em 10%, 20% e 30%, e aquecidas juntas, após o aquecimento misturadas ao solo. Sendo classificado como solo de baixa compressibilidade (ML), caracterizando um silte argiloso. Segundo a classificação HBR, tem-se P200 < 35%, LL > 40, IP < 10 e IG =0, assim o grupo de classificação pertence ao grupo A-2, subgrupos A-2-5. Os resultados de Índice de Suporte Califórnia (ISC) do solo em estudo foram de 41% para amostra de solo e 130% para amostra de solo mais compósito.

After an adventurous past-four changes of government in thirty years -the whole of Silesia and attached coal territories have become part of the Polish State. The coal resources of this area are the biggest among the European countries. Under a surface area of 5700 sq km are about 100 coal seams, with a total thickness of 150 meters. According to German estimates, there are some 150 billion metric tons of coal ranging in thickness up to 14 m within a depth of 1500 m. The seams are mostly level, free from faults, with good top and bottom; the coal is of excellent quality, hard and clean; and mining conditions are favorable. The mines are worked at considerable depth by means of vertical shafts and operate with cage and skip hoisting. Before the war, the mines were up to date, equipped with modern machines. Among the European countries, output per man shift was the highest ? 1.9 to 2.1 metric tons ? and cost of production was the lowest.

Our modern cities are almost incapable of sustaining themselves without subsurface infrastructure, which is not identifiable at first glance. This very soon becomes evident when the chaotic conditions prevailing in some cases in the multi-million cities on the African, Asian and South American continents are taken into consideration. This does not simply apply to the hopelessly congested streets in the downtown areas. If anything, it is shown here too that a subsurface infrastructure represents an important prerequisite for public health right up to banishing the danger of disease. Even during the 1990s, this has been clearly underlined through examples of cholera and plague epidemics in parts of Central and South America as well as on the Indian subcontinent. The overriding significance of an inner urban subsurface infrastructure in order to create decent conditions in the major built-up areas was once again emphasised not all that long ago at the United Nations HABITAT-II Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996. More than 15 000 delegates from all over the world mulled over and discussed the prerequisites for humane living conditions in human settlements taking the varying climatic, topographical and cultural marginal conditions in different regions of the globe into account. Apart from the built-up areas themselves, the utilisation of underground space is experiencing high and ever increasing significance in less densely populated regions. Attractive and fast transport links between industrial centres call for high- performance transport arteries for the economic, speedy and unhampered carriage of people and goods. Important impulses for the economic power of a region or nation are provided by transport development and links. As a consequence, tunnels for roads and railways are being built or planned to a great degree for crossing mountain ranges, rivers and straits.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in Northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations in such contexts require: 1. Good political risk information; 2. A thoroughgoing political risk management plan; and 3. A strategy to deal with political risk perception on the part of the investing public. Obtaining quality political risk information, developing a political risk management plan, and addressing political risk perception are the foci of this work.
