O processo de coqueificação em uma Coqueria do tipo Heat Recovery ocorre pela queima da matéria volátil presente no carvão, principal combustível para aquecimento dos fornos. Uma segunda queima não desejada ocorre pela combustão do coque. Essa queima indesejada é denominada Burn Loss. A quantidade de ar succionada para dentro dos fornos era controlada por um sistema automático que abria ou fechava as válvulas utilizando como principal variável o Tempo. Durante o controle por tempo varias influências e distúrbios que ocorriam no processo não eram levadas em consideração e consequentemente não era utilizado todo o potencial do processo para a produção de coque. O controle desenvolvido pela equipe da Coqueria da thyssenkrupp CSA (tkCSA) chamado de PID Combustão é focado em um sistema de autoaprendizagem, capaz de reconhecer as características do processo e admitir somente a quantidade de ar necessária para cada forno. Cálculos matemáticos, estatísticos e o histórico da temperatura do forno são levados em consideração pelo PID Combustão que otimiza a mistura de gás com ar no forno. Os principais benefícios após a instalação do PID Combustão foram: redução nas temperaturas dos coletores (preservação do ativo), aumento da capacidade de produção do forno (aumento da velocidade de coqueificação) e otimização da sucção ao longo dos fornos no mesmo coletor.

The Piedras Verdes copper mine is a new run-of-mine (ROM), heap leach, solvent-extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) operation located 21 km (13 miles) north-northwest of the town of Alamos in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Piedras Verdes copper mine is wholly owned by Frontera Copper Corp. (FCC), a Canadian corporation, through its 100 percent beneficial interest in Cobre del Mayo S.A. de C.V. (CDM), a Mexican registered company. The January 2008, minable reserves were estimated to be 193.6 Mt (213 million st) at a grade of 0.36 percent copper. The overall recovery of total copper was estimated to be 61.9 percent. The property has an additional 17-year life and is designed to produce 31.7 kt/a (70 million lbs/year) of cathode copper. Construction commenced in early October 2005. The first copper cathode was produced 12 months later at a total capital cost of $100 million. Elevations at the site range from 150 to 300 m (490 to 985 ft) above sea level. The area has excellent infra-structure in the form of towns, power, water, roads, rail, airfield and access to the deepwater port of Guaymas (Fig. 1). The surrounding area is also famous for its numerous polymetallic (lead, zinc, copper, silver and gold) epithermal veins. Some of these were mined for more than 200 years and provided the wealth on which the town of Alamos was built. The original village of Piedras Verdes was located in the area of the proposed openpit mine and, consequently, it was necessary to construct a new townsite 6 km (3.7 miles) to the south before project development could commence. The new town site (Fig. 2), complete with power and water supplies, roads, sewer system, schools, clinic and recreational facilities, was completed and occupied by 49 families in September 2005. CDM received its remaining permits from the Mexican environmental authorities on Sept. 20, 2005. This enabled the company to proceed with full-scale development. CDM owns or controls 27 mining concessions covering the resource. Surface rights to the Piedras Verdes project were controlled by four Ejidos (communal agrarian and/or ranching societies) and five individual landowners. CDM has acquired all surface rights necessary for its mining operations and associated facilities either through outright purchase or long term lease agreements.

The Arrowhead Tunnels Project represents the final portion of a 70 km (44-mile) long water conveyance facility that will bring up to 28 m3/sec (1,000 ft3/sec) of water into Southern California. The 13 km (8-mile) tunneling project is well underway and consists of two, 5.8 m (19-foot) diameter TBM bores through extremely variable geological conditions. The tunnels lie near the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and several significant faults including the San Andreas Fault run within one kilometer (0.6 miles) of the tunnel alignment. Numerous other significant faults cross the tunnel alignment and water pressures in the tunnel have been recorded as high as 20 bar (300 psi). This paper describes some of the problems and challenges encountered and the solutions implemented to advance the two hybrid TBMs under conditions that ranged from hard rock with no water inflows to full-face granular material under 10-bar pressure and in excess of 32 l/sec (500 gpm) inflows. Due to the range and severity of ground and water conditions actually encountered, the Owner-Contractor-Designer team eventually found that adjusting the means and methods to be more responsive—virtually on a day-by-day basis—was needed to suit the conditions

ThePike River coal field is located between 700 and 1000 m above sea level on the West Coast of the South Island. The area contains a resource of some 60 million tonnes of coal in a single coal seam and is part of the Paparoa mountain range that receives between 6.0 and 6.5 m of rainfall per annum. The area has been isolated and has received no on the coal plateau but has been extensively logged in the lower 3.5 km of Pike Stream. The PRCC development proposal recognises this and calls for an environmentally benign development that includes underground development of this resource. The coalfield abuts and is partly overlain by the Paparoa National Park. The underground development will enable a number of environmental goals to be readily achieved: it will be out of sight of the public,it will not impact the national park,noise will be mostly absent,there will be absolute minimal disturbance to the land surface,coal will be transported from the mine to a dewatering complex on PRCC land in a slurry pipeline thus obviating the need for trucks and noise in Pike Stream valley,all water draining from the mine will be collected, treated if required to consent standards and discharged from a single point,the road into the area will allow for an effective predator control programme to be undertaken enhancing native bird life,an environment suitable for the reintroduction of Whio (Blue Duck) will be created, andthe net effect of the mine development on the environment will be positive.

The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction. The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park.   As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of: +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Over recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of miners in the Pilbara region of Western Australia targeting channel iron deposits (CID) located in valleys, intersected by ephemeral creeks and below the groundwater table. The falling iron ore price has triggered a drive to reduce cost and maximise yield. Creek diversions provide an opportunity to maximise the utilisation of orebodies and extend the life-of-mine.Creek diversions that are required during mining operations to access ore and provide flood protection have historically been constructed as uniform engineered channels designed primarily for flow conveyance while minimising earthworks costs; however, the design of diversions becomes more complex when they are required to function in a similar way to the existing creek system during operations and remain stable during more extreme events than would typically occur following mine closure, in accordance with current regulatory guidance. The design specifications for closure are often more rigorous than the operational phase, and could incur significant additional cost to implement retrospectively if not planned and designed upfront.The complexity of diversion design depends on site specific factors such as: the size of the creek to be diverted; hydrology; corridor restrictions; geomorphology; hydrogeology; geology; environmental and heritage values; potential impacts and the risk to operations and environment. The complex interactions of these factors must be well understood and hydraulic modelling undertaken to characterise the existing creek system, demonstrate the diversions, provide adequate flood protection during operations, and can function in a similar way to the existing system following mine closure. A co-operative research project, combining Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) research scientists findings and company iron ore geologists' expertise, resulted in new concepts about the origins, distribution and complexitie of iron ores and their parent rocks (banded iron-formation or BIF) in the Hamersley Iron Province of Western Australia. Understanding these problems was important to the efficiency of exploration, development and ultimate mining of iron ores. This genetic model, based on a detailed mineralogic background, was modified by Mt Newman geologists to obtain a user oriented classification for practical application in the field.The proposed Pilbara Iron Ore Classification (PIOC) gives iron ore geologists a basis from which to understand, identify and record the various mineralogic and physical characteristics of the many genetically different ore types occurring within and between orebodies in the Pilbara. More definitive quality control over ore products can be achieved based on the detailed understanding of ore types which the PIOC allows, compared to current classifications which deal only with the physical nature of ores. Of equal importance, the classification remains sufficiently simple to enable owners, operators and buyers to achieve a basic appreciation of ore type variations.With little modification, it is believed the classification has applications beyond the Pilbara, to iron ore worldwide.

"Abstract The content of Eurocode 7 – Part 1 and Part 2 – with respect to piled foundations is outlined. The important role of pile testing is presented and the derivation of the characteristic value of pile bearing resistance is explained. Recommendations for the use of correlation factors are given. The ongoing work of the Evolution Groups on piling is to prepare a revision of Eurocode 7 after 2019. Future topics and changes are highlighted.General outline of pile design by Eurocode 7In his paper for this conference Frank (2014) outlined the various aspects of standardisation for pile foundations, which involves Eurocode 7 as leading for pile construction in Europe. Standards for pile testing and execution of piling works were established in the last 15 years.This paper focuses on the design of piled foundations according to the design code Eurocode 7, which consists of 2 parts:EN 1997-1 Geotechnical design - Part 1: General Rules (CEN, 2004);EN 1997-2 Geotechnical design – Part 2: Ground investigation and testing (CEN, 2007) In Eurocode 7-1, Section 7 – Pile Foundations - deals with the design of piles. The safety concept for pile design is given in Section 2 – Basis of Geotechnical Design - for the three Design Approaches.In Section 7 presents the design of piles according to four methods:1. Results of static load tests2. Empirical or analytical calculation methods3. Results of dynamic load tests4. Observed performance of a comparable pile foundation.Guidelines for the ground investigation for piles is provided in Eurocode 7-2, Annex B.3. In the Annexes of Eurocode 7-2 examples of analytical methods to determine the bearing resistance of a single pile based on the results of various ground investigation techniques are given. Thus calculation models are presented based on design using the results of Cone Penetration Tests (D.6 and D.7) and Pressuremeter Tests (E.3). Alaskan villages typically store a one-year supply of fuel to reduce significant delivery costs. Alaska Village Electric Cooperative (AVEC), an electric utility cooperative providing power to 51 Alaska villages, has made a concerted effort to upgrade and improve their undersized and aging facilities. The Village of Stebbins, located south of Nome on Norton Sound is receiving upgrades to its AVEC bulk fuel facilities. Stebbins offered unique challenges from a foundations perspective due to the nature of the soil. The geotechnical investigation found the soil below roughly a third of the footprint of the bulk fuel facility to be thawed with seasonal freezing and the remainder was found to be warm permafrost with ground temperatures of between 30°F and 32°F. This is a unique and challenging arctic engineering design issue because foundations are designed differently for frozen ground conditions. Driven piles were selected because of site constraints, such as the design flood elevation and the change from thawed to frozen ground conditions. The pile design specified that the pile embedment depths would be selected based on the results of pile driving analyzer (PDA) testing during construction in the thawed ground and maintained within the frozen ground portion of the footprint. Difficulties during pile driving in the frozen ground resulted in several piles becoming severely damaged, requiring subsequent removal. This resulted in a reevaluation of the means and methods for pile installation. Additional fieldwork was performed to further characterize the subsurface soils and their frozen nature. Options for installation of piles in difficult areas were evaluated including ground thawing, predrilling, and reducing embedment depths. Presented within this paper are the findings from the initial and subsequent field explorations, discussion of the design methodology, and the decisions that led to successful installation of piles at this challenging remote village.

The Freeport-McMoRan Main Pass Mine development in the Gulf of Mexico is a complex designed to extract up to 67 million long tons of sulphur over a 40 year period. The initial development includes 15 platforms and 13 bridges located in water depths ranging from 208 to 214 feet, approximately 15 miles east of the Mississippi River Delta. Three additional platforms were designed and installed for the oil and gas development in the complex. Over 110, 000 short tons of steel were required to fabricate the structures. As the sulphur is extracted significant subsidence is predicted over a major portion of complex in the shape of a very large bowl. Vertical elevations are predicted to change as much as 65 feet. Horizontal movements and mudline slope changes cause adjacent platform decks to move as much as 30 feet relative to each other. Differential soil movement is predicted between piling of individual platforms causing the piling to spread, resulting in significant lateral loading on the piling. Relative vertical soil movements are predicted along the lengths of the piles which causes "up drag" or "down drag" forces on individual piles. This paper addresses the design of the piling for the structures in the complex. Design criteria will be discussed explaining how the more traditional offshore environmental and gravity loadings were combined with the unique loading caused by subsidence. Design and analysis procedures will be explained and analysis results presented. These results include the incorporation of 100 ksi steel in thicknesses up to 5 inches in some of the tubular piles. Comparisons will be made between conventional offshore structures and these structures designed to accommodate the subsidence.

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

"Initiated in 2008, the project of this 1800 km long Electrical Transmission Line is a job of extreme technical complexity, crossing regions of major forests and rivers. When ready, it will allow the large Brazilian states of Amazonas, Amapá and Pará to use the energy from hydroelectric plants, thus eliminating the need for the use of diesel fuel thermal plants, with their much larger environmental footprint. Due to its extraordinary characteristics, the Green Peace and the Discovery Channel constantly visited the job. The part between the Amazon and the Xingu rivers started in 2012, and encompassed about 100 transmission towers with up to 150 m height, through a region known as “Alagados”. This region exhibits a 1.5 m water level during the rainy season, and soaked ground the rest of the year. Navigation of regular vessels is impossible during the flood season, when a dense vegetation called “bulhado” fills the riverbed, and vehicle traffic is impossible during the dry season, due to the extremely low surface soil resistance. Great logistical and technical difficulties were encountered for driving and determining the capacity of the piles. New systems had to be developed for driving the piles, with the simultaneous use of 15 small piling rigs. The final penetration, total number of hammer blows during driving, plus Dynamic and Static Load Tests were used for determining the driving and acceptance criteria.The geographical challenge and initial conditionsThis paper describes the execution of foundations for a 500 kV Electrical Transmission Line in a region that becomes flooded during the rainy season and heavily muddy during the dry season. This is the monsoon climate, typical of the equatorial region of Brazil, where there is a rainy season lasting for about half the year, followed by a very dry season. The temperature varies very little throughout the year, due to the proximity to the equator. The locals call the rainy season “winter” and the dry season “summer”.The most important part of the so-called “Alagados” region is situated inside an Environmental Extractive Reserve (RESEX) called “Verde para Sempre” (Forever Green), created in 2003. This is one of the largest environmental reserves in Brazil. It is an area controlled by the Brazilian Environmental Control Department, the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio). The environment control parameters are very strict.No deep foundation had ever been executed before along the “Alagados” region. The main challenge faced on this job, however, was working in a place where self-propelling vessels or land vehicles and equipment cannot be used. During the rainy season there is a dense and intricate vegetation called “bulhado”, which prevents the movement of outboard motor boats with propellers going deeper than 50 cm. In the dry season, the heavy mud prevents the movement of foundation equipment, excavators, trucks and other machinery."

Selection of an appropriate foundation system requires great skill and ingenuity on the part of the designer. Certain guidelines for choosing between a pile and raft foundation are presented. A number of methods are available for estimating the capacity of piles, giving a wide range of values for the theoretical load carrying capacity. A few aspects to be taken into account while arriving at an appropriate theoretical capacity are discussed. The effect of fluctuation of water table level on the pile capacity and method of accounting for this factor on the pile capacity obtained through initial load test are also discussed. A case study presents a comparison between the estimated values of capacity of piles and the values obtained through the initial load test.

"Ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and they are very short in duration with high principal frequencies and high amplitude. Structural response to that kind of excitations may differ significantly from that generated by lower-frequency earthquake vibrations. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. However, the existing vibrations limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. This paper investigated the influence of the rock-soil interface on the response of pile foundation to ground-borne vibration from rock blasting, through numerical simulations using finite element software LS-DYNA. It is found that the slope of the rock-soil interface greatly influences the location of damage and the extent of damage on the pile. The bottom of the pile is subjected to a larger blast pressure and stresses are highly concentrated at the pile bottom. Thus, the pile bottom can fail in shear before it reaches its plastic moment capacity.INTRODUCTIONDrilling and blasting is the widely accepted method to large-scale rock breaking activities in civil engineering constructions due to its cost effectiveness, higher efficiency and ability to break hard rock. However, ground vibrations from blasting are undesirable and it can cause damage to nearby structures. In practice, the damage to nearby structures to generated ground vibrations has been controlled by various codes and regulations available. The existing vibration limits are not always applicable, as they depend on the geological conditions of the site and dynamic characteristics of the structure.Pile foundations are commonly used as foundations of high-rise buildings and bridges to transfer the heavy loads from the superstructure above through weak compressible soil strata into deeper, competent soil layers which have adequate capacity to carry these loads. In engineering practice, many piles are normally designed to carry mainly vertical loads and very little lateral loads, as typically the vertical loads (the gravity) are significantly larger than the horizontal loads such as wind loading. However, in recent years, there have been a number of reported case studies of translational soil movements that have induced stresses and bending moments that have damaged pile foundations and in some cases resulted in collapse of the superstructure. Typical lateral load include nearby construction activities such as an excavation for a basement or slope, the construction of a road embankment or a tunnel, as well as earthquakes (Abdoun 1997; Goh et al. 1997; 2003; Chen et al. 1999; Dobry et al. 2003; Boulanger et al. 2007; Black et al. 2007)."

"The new Amcor B9 paper mill in Botany, NSW, Australia, involved the design and construction of a new paper mill founded within the Botany Basin Sediments. There were numerous design and construction challenges to address, including tight settlement tolerances for the paper machine footings (6 mm total and 1/2000 mm differential limits), high variable and cyclic loads, deep (>25 m) bedrock and uncontrolled fill material across the site. The mill structure design incorporated a deep driven precast and CFA piled foundation solution, with a comprehensive swathe of testing to validate pile capacity and expected settlements. The pile design for the mill structure included the installation of approximately 1000 piles, with pile testing comprising dynamic testing and a static load test on precast piles. With consideration of Sydney’s increasing demand for development space in relative close proximity to the city’s CBD, industrial areas in the Botany Bay area are likely to make way for heavy or complex commercial and residential structures. Therefore, a better understanding of the engineering behaviour of sediments underlying these areas would allow for efficient foundation solutions. This paper presents a discussion on effective foundation testing techniques and the effects that the behaviour and characteristics of the Botany Bay sediments impose on deep piled solutions.2 PROJECT DETAILS2.1 New paper millThe project involved the construction of the largest recycled paper machine in Australia. The paper machine is 330 m (1080 ft) long, 22 m (72 ft) high, and capable of producing 1.6 km (1 mile) of paper per minute. Construction commenced in early 2011 and new paper mill officially opened in early 2013. The early works contract was awarded to Baulderstone Construction Pty. Ltd. (Lend Lease Corp. Ltd.), with the D&C contract awarded to a consortium headed by Leighton Contractors Pty. Ltd. (CPB Contractors Pty. Ltd.), which included Golder Associates Pty. Ltd. as the geotechnical designer and reviewer.2.2 Site history and effect on local topographyThe site has been used as a paper mill since 1902, and as such, has layers of uncontrolled fill and buried objects within the upper fill materials associated with historical industrial use. The fill material generally comprised of loose and very loose sands, with isolated pockets of cohesive materials, peats, pulped paper and general construction waste. In addition, during construction, underground storage tanks were identified at depth, indicating the historical extent of filling across the site was extensive. The presence of this generally uncontrolled fill was a factor for determining that the most cost effective foundation solution for the paper mill was piled foundations, to bypass these materials."

The pile inspector is a critical element in the quality control process necessary for a successful pile installation project. This guide is intended to provide the inspector with a basic understanding of only one of the many components of this process - the pile driving hammer. Pile driving hammers are used to install both bearing piles for structure foundations and sheet piles (and soldier piles) as used in retaining structures. In a single document, this guide offers a general presentation of the operation of the more common types of hammers the inspector is likely to encounter. It should make the information in the contractor's hammer submittal for the project more understandable. It should also provide an appreciation for the importance of a properly operating pile hammer. Prior to the start of most pile driving operations, the contractor will normally furnish a submittal to the engineer giving the specific pile driving equipment that he intends to use on the job. This submittal should include the make, model, and type of the intended pile driving hammer or hammers and their operating characteristics such as ram weight, rated energy, operating speed, external power requirements and, other pertinent information. Frequently, the operating characteristics are provided in the form of the manufacturer's specification sheet. The engineer will review this information and when he is satisfied, approve it and pass it on to the inspector. The driving criteria will have been determined by the engineer or others (the geotechnical engineer, consulting engineer, contractor, etc.) from the results of static analysis (for minimum penetration), driving during a test pile installation, Wave Equation analysis, dynamic formula, pile instrumentation during driving, static load test, or a combination of these or other appropriate analyses. The driving criteria can be a minimum penetration of driven pile length (embedded length), or a minimum (or maximum) blow count per unit of penetration. The pile inspector should become familiar with this information prior to the start of the job and should understand or seek help to comprehend the terminology and intent of each specification.

This paper describes the following at the new Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) nozzle manufacturing facility, which is being constructed inside an existing manufacturing facility: 1) generalized subsurface conditions, 2) pile load test program and evaluation, 3) pile selection, 4) problems associated with pile driving operations, and 5) production pile installation. The poor subsurface conditions, known and unknown underground obstructions, and work environment inside the existing building, used to manufacture the Space Shuttle external fuel tanks, required special pile installation equipment, procedures, and work schedules to install the economical pile foundation system ahead of schedule and without a lost time accident. GEOTECHNICAL STUDIES In April and May 1990, 16 soil test borings were drilled inside the existing building with a truck-mounted drill rig. The borings extended to depths ranging from 60 to 65 ft (18.3 to 19.8 m) below the floor slab. Typically, the silty and clayey soils were sampled by pushing "undisturbed" Shelby tubes, and the more sandy soils were sampled by driving a Standard Penetration Test (SPT) split-spoon sampler. The unconfined compressive strength, water content, and unit weight of the Shelby tube samples were measured in the laboratory. A geotechnical report was issued in May 1990 presenting the results of the field and laboratory testing and foundation recommendations (Gilbert, 1990).
