The Turquoise Ridge Joint Venture (TRJV) is located in northern central Nevada, and is situated within the Basin and Range province, near the northeast end of the Osgood Mountains (see Figure 1). The TRJV mine consists of typical Carlin type- gold mineralization characterized by low strength rock of altered limestones, siltstones, and mudstones. The weak nature of the ground facilitates the underhand cut and fill mining methods. TRJV has been working to optimize ground support and mechanize top cut drift sizes and eliminate operating hazards associated with jackleg drilling. Safety Factor analysis based on bolt strengths has allowed us to pursue larger sized top cut drifts and to evaluate bolt length sizes and spacing. Switching from jackleg sized drifts of 10?W x 10?H to a mechanized 12?H x12?W top cut drift design has the potential to decrease overbreak, provide more uniform drift design sizes and bolt patterns, and increase ore production by at least 38%.

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

Numerous problems encountered in the mining of narrow vein deposits challenge the productivity, competitiveness and profitability of many mines. Mechanization of mining operations is one of the most important means to ensure the healthy survival of this mining sector. Vein deposits account for nearly all the world's primary silver production, as well as a significant portion of gold, tin, copper lead and zinc. In North America, narrow vein mining constitutes an important sector of the industry. Operators exploiting such deposits are concerned with the most appropriate mining method and equipment to mine in such a way as to minimize waste rock dilution. Unfortunately, most of the equipment available does not meet the additional geological and economical restrictions typical of narrow vein mining. Thus, mining these deposits is labor intensive and can result in low productivity. Consequently, the profitability of many such mines is reduced. Increased mechanization is one of the solutions to ensure their healthy survival. This paper reviews the state-of-the art in mining equipment with reference to narrow vein mining limitations. Problems encountered Geological conditions and economical factors have a decisive impact on the choice of mining method and equipment. Many ore bodies are relatively small, usually erratically distributed, often less than 2 m (6.5 ft) wide, with dips ranging from 0° to 90°. To make things worse, ore body limits are sometimes difficult to determine and the ground is hard and abrasive.

"This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. Mechanical excavation methods can significantly improve excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. Herrenknecht has developed a mechanized shaft sinking method for soft and medium strength rock. This system combines innovative technologies which allow simultaneous excavation, removal of cut material and the installation of rock support. This Shaft Boring Roadheader ?SBR? is flexible in diameter and can be used in shafts with changing diameters and different shaft support requirements for depth up to 2,000 m. During regular excavation personnel are not required to access or work on the shaft bench. The boom used to cut the shaft profile is based on roadheader technology.

Alluvial deposits of major rivers often provide relatively uniform tunneling conditions. However, these conditions pose specific challenges due to the tunneling behavior of the granular soils as flowing ground, if unsupported. This paper describes the design considerations and construction experiences gained during the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) drives for the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the Vancouver, B.C. metropolitan area. Meeting the design criteria for connecting two (2) deep on-land shafts with an in-river riser manifold required advancing a 5-meter-diameter slurry TBM through the Fraser Rivers sands and at a tunnel invert elevation with a baseline hydrostatic head of 3.4 bar.

"High-grade concentrates are achieved in flotation columns primarily due to the use of thick froth layers and wash water, both of which facilitate the drainage of hydrophilic minerals from the froth. However, conventional columns employ tall, non-agitated recovery sections for bubble-particle attachment that require high headroom and special gas spargers as well as imposing particle size limitations. These disadvantages can be all alleviated by carrying out the recovery part of the process in a mechanical or pneumatic cell which generate froth more conveniently and efficiently.This paper describes the combining of mechanical and column flotation in a single unit and discusses the influence of various parameters on the performance of the system.INTRODUCTIONIn a flotation process, some of the minerals lifted up to the froth phase may drain back to the pulp due to various reasons such as weak attachment of particles to air bubbles, bursting of air bubbles, agitation of froth, etc. Weakly floating and entrained hydrophilic minerals drain at a faster rate than the strongly floating minerals, and effective exploitation of such differential drainage can lead to cleaner concentrates.For a given mineral, if the rate of flotation from pulp to froth is k1 (min·1) and the rate of drainage from froth to pulp is k2 (min""1), then the net (overall) flotation rate of the mineral, k (min-1 ), will be [Lynch et al., 1981 ]:"

Enargite (Cu3AsS4) belongs among refractory copper minerals with very low hydrometallurgical extractability of copper. An application of enargite leaching in acid solutions leads to simultaneous dissolution of copper and arsenic and the final leach solutions have to be treated for the separation of both elements. However, the alkaline leaching of enargite is selective. Arsenic passes into leach while produced copper sulphide represents the raw material suitable for pyrometallurgy. The hydrometallurgical processing of mineral can be influenced positively by mechanochemical route. We have shown that more than 80 % of arsenic can be extracted from enargite concentrate by atmospheric alkaline leaching at 95 °C when mechanical activation in an attritor is applied. The produced Cu2S can be further treated with elemental iron where mechanochemical intervention is applied in the second stage of enargite processing. The final product forms Cu/FeS nanocomposite from which copper nanoparticles can be easily separated. The illustrated concept of copper obtaining from copper sulphide is an example of so-called “dry” processing, as reactions in gas and liquid phases are excluded. This concept of environmentally friendly metallurgical processing can be classified as an impetus for novel technology to produce copper from enargite concentrates.

Blue dust is a high grade soft haematite material containing 96.14% Fe2O3 transformed into magnetite (Fe3O4), when it is subjected to planetary ball milling in the presence of iron powder as reducing reagent. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and Laser particle size analyser have been employed to characterize various samples collected at various milling times to know the phase evolution, particle size distribution and morphology of particles. X-ray diffraction studies reveal the formation of magnetite phase at the optimum milling time of 40 hours. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) study demonstrates, that sample obtained at 40 hours of milling time exhibits saturation magnetisation of 14.757 emu/g whereas the starting material used in this study shows only 1.0425 emu/g. Mechanically-induced chemical reactions between natural beach ilmenite (FeTiO3) and silicon (Si) have been examined by a combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) analyses. The effect of various milling time on the phase transformation, crystallite size, and lattice strain of a beach sand ilmenite with silicon, and on their leaching behavior in hydrochloric acid (HCl) has been investigated. For mechanically activated FeTiO3, the crystallite size decreased and lattice strain increased monotonically with time of milling. However, the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenite with silicon showed a relatively smaller crystallite size and greater lattice strain compared with the mechanically activated ilmenite under the same milling condition. In accordance with the elapse of milling time, the intensity of both pure FeTiO3 and mechanically activated FeTiO3 gradually decreased. However, in case of the mechanochemically synthesized ilmenitereduction of FeTiO3 by silicon resulted in formation of rutile TiO2 at the milling time of 20 h and afterwards. Additional leaching experiments were carried out at an HCl/ilmenite (wt%) ratio of 20:1. The concentration of HCl was 3 M and the reaction temperature ranged from 70 to 90 oC. Mechanical activation was observed to significantly enhance the dissolution rates of both iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti) in HCl. Particularly, effects of both milling time and silicon addition on the dissolution rates of titanium and iron were significant, while those of temperature were relatively minor under the conditions investigated in this study. Recent interest in complex aluminohydrides as potential near ambient, ultra-high capacity, solid-state sources of hydrogen (e.g., for fuel cells) calls for an improved understanding of the processes occumng in these hydrogen-containing materials during both the release and the uptake of hydrogen. Lithium aluminohydride (LiAlH4) rapidly releases 5.2 wt. % of hydrogen (i.e., nearly four times more than LaNis-based alloys) during mechanochemical processing at ambient conditions in the presence of transition metal catalysts. Using a variety of solid-state characterization techniques, the mechanochemical transformations in a series of LiAlH4 - metal catalyst systems have been examined and preliminary insights on the mechanism have been obtained. Surprisingly, the well-known hydrogenating-dehydrogenating catalysts, such as Ni and Pt, are practically inactive in the mechanochemical dehydrogenation of LiAlH4.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900?s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily-poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930?s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has world-wide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development program dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and pre-heater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

FRIENDS of the late Charles F. Rand presented in 1930 a sum of money from which the income is available to support various phases of the work of the Institute in which Mr. Rand was so deeply interested. At present the fund amounts to $10,400. The specific terms of the deed of gift are as follows: "The fund collected to establish a memorial to the late Charles F. Rand shall be placed in the custody of the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, to be set up as a trust to be known as the `Charles F. Rand Foundation,' the income of which shall each year be applied to a distinct purpose to be decided upon in that year by vote of the Board of Directors. This purpose shall be such as to promote the general welfare of the Institute and to constitute a permanent memorial of the usefulness of Mr. Rand, who for many years gave unstintingly of his time and talents in its service. "It shall be within the discretion of the Board of Directors to establish a medal to be known as the Charles F. Rand Memorial Medal to be awarded at such a time and under such rules as may be determined by the Board of Directors, for Distinguished Achievement in Mining Administration." The establishment of this medal was announced at the annual meeting in February, 1932, the term "mining" being defined in its broad sense to include metallurgy and petroleum. Robert Linton is chairman of the Charles F. Rand Foundation Award Committee.

"The Kuz-Ram model as originally proposed included an error in assuming that the mean fragmentsize predicted by Kuznetsov’s equation was actually the 50% passing size. In 2003 Spathis began discussions on this issue and recommended correcting the equation. The correction produced more fines in the predicted fragmentation, which had been a criticism of some users of the original model. Ouchterlony subsequently showed that the error had, if anything been beneficial, and that the Swebrec function adequately covered the fines. This author shows that the Spathis correction does not assist the fines correction in examples examined, but tends to underestimate coarser fractions. An intrinsic problem of communication between academics and engineers is a root of misunderstanding on both sides, and requires patience by both parties to enable value to arise."

Why is mediation being hailed as the wave of the future? The high cost of putting on a trial, over-crowded court calendars and long trial delays have resulted in what prominent attorneys and leading jurists are calling a litigation crisis. In no segment of the legal world are these pressures greater felt than in the trial of the serious construction case. Furthermore, the siege mentality of both the plaintiff and defense bar often leads to a reluctance by either side to make the first reasonable offer for fear of showing weakness. Attorneys operating in the serious construction case arena express concerns that there exist insufficient opportunities for the parties to meet, tell their stories, and negotiate settlement prior to the eve of trial. Mediation, by opening lines of effective communication and encouraging meaningful settlement negotiation, has proven to be a very effective antidote to the litigation crisis.
