Scenario reduction is designed for selecting a representative subset of geostatistical simulations out of a much larger set. Three steps are involved: measuring the dissimilarity between two simulations; finding a metric to measure the distance between any subset of k simulations and the full set of N simulations; and finding an efficient algorithm for selecting the subset that minimizes the metric. This paper focuses on the third question. We show that genetic algorithms are an efficient way of approaching the minimum when the population of subsets to be sampled is large. Two case studies based on the Walker Lake data-set are presented: firstly choosing k=4 simulations out of a total of 100, and secondly choosing 20 out of the same 100 simulations. In the first case it was possible to compute all possible combinations exhaustively and hence to demonstrate that the algorithm converges to the true minimum. This was not possible in the second case. Instead we demonstrate that it outperforms the random draw algorithm used in earlier work. A procedure for tracking individual selections during the iterative procedure was developed. This allows us to measure the evolution in the percentage of progeny resulting from crossing-over and from mutation that survived in the next generation. It gives valuable insight into how to choose the parameter values in the algorithm. Another key finding is that there is a trade-off between the number of individuals per generation and the number of generations required for the algorithm to converge.

In spite of its unique features and ability to treat gases without any prior drying, the WSA technology has had certain restrictions with regards to SO2 concentration in the feed gas, and the overall conversion of SO2 by catalytic means has been limited to approx. 99.7%. In commercial scale sulphuric acid production on the basis of elemental sulphur and metallurgical off-gases, there is a demand for higher SO2 conversion and treatment of gases with a higher content of SO2. Therefore Topsoe has further developed its WSA technology to cope with these demands. This paper will explain more about the principles of such new development and leave the delegate with a better understanding of the potentials of the new generation of the WSA technology from Topsoe.

Abstract: In order to develop non-destructive methods in studying physical and mechanical properties of rock and replacing them with difficult and expensive static methods, several ultrasonic tests were carried out on cylindrical rock specimens in accordance with the ISRM suggested methods and velocity of P and S waves were determined. Also, density, porosity, water absorption, uniaxial compressive strength and indirect tensile strength were determined for each specimen in accordance with ISRM suggested methods. According to above tests static and dynamic elastic constants were calculated After statistical analysis of data obtained from tests, the relationships between velocity of elastic waves and physical or mechanical parameters were determined and some equations were obtained. Also similar analyses were performed on static and dynamic constants and some equations were extracted. Using these equations, the physical and mechanical parameters of rock and also static elastic constants can be estimated by conducting simple and quick tests (i.e. ultrasonic tests). Außer der Dichtheit und der Porosität betonen Wasser Aufnahme und monoaxial Widerstand und dehnbaren indirekten Widerstand jeder Probe betreffend der erhaltenen Ergebnisse die atmosphärische Aufladung sind bestimmt worden und die dynamischen Faktoren der Steine sind kalkuliert worden. Nachdem statistische Analyse die Korrelation der Ergebnisse zwischen der Geschwindigkeit elastischer Wellen und mechanischer und physischer Eigentümer der Steine erhalten worden ist, und mehrere Verhältnisse sind vorgeschlagen worden. Eine ähnliche Analyse ist auf atmosphärischer Aufladung und dynamischen Faktoren durchgeführt worden und einige Verhältnisse sind erhalten worden. Mit Hilfe dieser Verhältnisse die physischen und mathematischen Eigentümer von Steinen und auch können die Statistik Faktoren durch einfachen und schnellen altrasonic Prüfungen erhalten werden. Mintek has been involved in the development of bioleach technology for many years, initially for refractory gold extraction, and more recently also for base metals extraction. Mintek, in collaboration with its Australian technology partner (BacTech), is the technology provider for the Beaconsfield refractory gold bioleach plant. At present Mintek, BacTech and Peñoles are constructing a demonstration bioleach plant for copper-zinc concentrate treatment. Bioleach liquors produced in all applications have to be neutralized. In the copper-zinc case, neutralization is required for bleeding iron from the circuit and for adjusting the pH value ahead of solvent extraction. In the refractory gold bioleach circuit, neutralization is required for producing a stable iron-arsenic residue. Some of the challenges encountered in each of these neutralization applications are discussed, and examples of results obtained are presented.

Automation of the conventional grinding circuits of Palabora Mining Company (PMC) required that adequate instrumentation and a control system had to be put in place, after which extensive testing had to be done to evaluate different grinding control strategies. The objective was either to optimize the particle size from the grinding circuit, or to increase milling circuit throughput while maintaining particle size at existing levels. Prior to automation of the process as described below the circuits were controlled manually. No on-line information on cyclone feed densities, cyclone feed flow or cyclone overflow particle size was available. This type of control relied heavily on interpretation of the process parameters by the operator and on his ability to make informed decisions on what the set points should be. An integral component of the automation process was the installation of a SCADA package (SysCad SDX) for implementing the on-line control strategy. A self-correcting model for prediction of cyclone particle size was developed and implemented on the SDX. The model is calibrated using values from the particle size analysers while they are operational. If the particle size analysers choke or fail for any reason, the model continues to provide a good estimate of the particle size. This technique ensures that a continuous particle size indication is available compared to the intermittent reading from the instrument. The continuous signal allows particle size to be used as a process variable for control purposes. A strategy was developed and implemented which allows for the production of a controlled grind size from the conventional milling circuit to the flotation circuit. The grinding control strategy allows for the control of particle size from the individual cyclone overflows. This strategy allows the operator of the process to increase or decrease production rate by specifying a coarser or finer grind size required for flotation.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of technology to stoping systems. Technology, because for the past 100 years the South African narrow reef mining industry has battled to control working costs in a labour-intensive industry. Stoping systems, because it is the stoping method and methodology which is at the heart of the mining system. Introduce a more efficient stoping system and the mining system will look after itself. The technology applied to stoping over the past 100 years can be categorized as follows: ?The introduction of pneumatic rockdrills early this century, the cumbersome rig mounted units being replaced by smaller, lighter hand-held units which were then made easier to use with the addition of an air leg ?Scraper winches to replace gravity and shovels to move rock both in the face and the gullies were first introduced in the late 1920s ?Hydraulic props as a support method arrived in the1960s ?Some people argue that tungsten carbide inserts were equally important. There have been a number of attempts to introduce different technologies into stoping, the most recent being trackless equipment. Where the stoping layout suits the technology it has been successful. There have been too many instances where a technology has been installed because it is fashionable. At the end of the day the outcome from change in the stoping systems has to be safer and more profitable mining systems. It is the contention of the author that change is only likely to be effective if it is supported by the introduction and application of appropriate technology.

In the latter part of the 1980?s Outokumpu Chrome in Tornio, Finland, was in a situation when its twenty-year-old ferrochrome plant was becoming inefficient to sustain economically sound production. The company made extensive studies on the then available processing methods to find out the best possible processing route. As a result the whole plant was practically rebuilt and expanded. When equipment was proven in practical operation an application for FeMn production was developed. Now when Tornio FeCr-plant is considering the expansion the same type of exercise is to be performed with today?s challenges, which will be discussed in the paper. These challenges include increasing costs or decreasing quality of raw materials, increasing energy costs, stricter environmental regulations and demand of better working conditions. The possibilities to respond to these challenges will be discussed in the paper. The future and continuing development with FeCr includes the better utilization of process dusts and a lower consumption of energy. By adapting the latest automation tools to better control of the process even higher efficiencies can be achieved with present technology. New processes are considered for development in the future and some possible technologies will be described.

The paper reviews the results to date of an integrated research programme currently being conducted by CSIR Mining Technology, aimed at impacting significantly on concentrated mining with face advance rates of up to 20 times faster than presently achieved. Consideration is given to the interplay between innovative technologies for continuous non-explosive mining or rock comminution underground and lateral hydraulic transportation in cross cuts, haulages and eventually hydro hoisting. Novel technologies for underground comminution of reef and development waste and an innovative pumping system suitable for the hydraulic transportation of coarse comminuted rock are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on South African gold mine reef and waste samples comminuted by electric shock wave comminution technology. The innovative TORE® pump system appears to be well suited for the successful hydraulic transportation of rock, produced by electric shock wave comminution, at solids concentrations between 45 % and 67 % by mass.

Bateman, like other engineering contractors, carries out or participates in many studies of potential projects in the Minerals Industry. This paper aims to explain the contracting approach to feasibility studies as practiced by Bateman, particularly where this differs from a traditional mining company approach. A brief description is provided of the usual phases of a project and the types of estimate needed to proceed from one phase to the next. Possible organizational structures involving different forms of association between owner, contractor and consultants are then outlined. The bulk of the paper then demonstrates that the cost estimates prepared stem directly from the mining plan, metallurgical process design and engineering design philosophy. The steps to be followed in order to prepare a credible estimate which accurately reflects the design constraints are described. The importance and the methodology of carrying out value engineering and of preparing contingency estimates based on a thorough risk analysis exercise are then discussed. Financial modelling techniques are described briefly. The paper concludes with short summary case studies of two recent investigations of potential projects in Africa.

Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Phd.(Process Engineering) degree Process modelling is an essential element in the development of advanced (model-based) process control systems, accounting for up to 80% of the cost of development. Often, models based on historic process data are the only viable option when dealing with processes that cannot be modeled cost-effectively from first principles. Despite major advances that have recently been made in the field of nonlinear process modeling, some basic idea of the dynamic behaviour of a process system is important prior to system identification. While many process systems seem unlikely to be linear, the possible nonlinear aspects of their dynamics are not necessarily supported by the data. This may have significant implications for subsequent system identification or interpretation of the data. For example, it is quite possible that an underlying nonlinear deterministic signal may be obscured by a high degree of measurement or process noise, to the extent that it may be critical in the choice of model to fit to the data. The method of surrogate data analysis has recently been proposed as a means to classify the underlying dynamics of complex systems, and in this paper the use of Fourier transform surrogates to classify process systems is explored. The accident at Unit No. 2 of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor (TMI-2) on 28 March 1979 was the worst nuclear accident in US history and crippled the nuclear industry. An international Vessel Investigation Project was formed to assess the integrity of the vessel. However, it was not possible to remove specimens from the lower head until January?March 1990. Fourteen of the fifteen specimens removed by electrical discharge machining were from under the debris pile that accumulated on the lower head due to melting of approximately 19 000 kg (45%) of the core. Specimens were previously cut from the lower head of a cancelled reactor of very similar size and design destined for Midland, Michigan. These specimens were subjected to controlled heating cycles with peak temperatures from 800°C to 1100°C for periods of 1 to 100 minutes. The initial study qualitatively compared the structures in the 15 specimens from TMI-2 to the control specimens from the Midland lower head. The writer used the same specimens and employed microindentation hardness traverses, electron microprobe analysis, and selective etching followed by quantitative metallography (by image analysis) to obtain a far more detailed description of the thermal exposure experienced.

Although many investigations of the deformation behaviour of rocks have been carried out, most of them are carried out in compression. In all rock engineering practice it is usually assumed that the deformation of rocks in tension is the same as that in compression. However, data from numerous researchers have shown that this assumption is not correct for some rocks. A new loading frame for testing rocks in compression and direct tension has recently been developed by the authors, with the capacity to conduct both compression and tensile tests on the same rock sample. The results obtained show that the ratios between the average Young?s modulus in compression (ECA) and in direct tension (ETA) are 1, 1.16, 2 and 6 respectively in four rock types tested. For Poisson?s ratios, analogous relations were obtained. It was observed that, in all cases, the tangent Young?s modulus intension reduces with an increase in the applied tensile stress, while the behaviour of Poisson?s ratio is similar, but shows greater variability. The difference between the Young?s modulus of rocks in tension and that in compression could lead, large errors in calculating induced stresses around underground openings, as well as in determining the Brazilian tensile strength of rocks. This may have a significant influence in rock engineering and therefore more investigation is necessary into the tensile deformation behaviour of rocks and its influence.

This paper reports hardness and abrasive wear resistance test results from a wide range of WC-Co alloys, varying in cobalt content as well as WC grain size. The results show that the abrasive wear resistance increases with increasing hardness and that the rate of increase is higher for larger WC grain sizes. The increase in abrasive wear resistance was found to be parabolic up to a critical hardness value and exponential above that value. The transition from parabolic to exponential behaviour was found to occur at the same contiguity value for all grain sizes, which suggests that at that contiguity value the WC skeleton becomes continuous in all WC-Co alloys.

[Zr(C9H6NO)4]?(HCON(CH3)2)?(H2O), where (C9H6NO) = 8-hydroxy quinoline (oxH), was synthesized and characterized. This tetrakis-coordinated zirconium complex crystallized in the triclinic crystal system (Pi, Z=2) along with water and N,N?-dimethylformamide(DMF) solvate in the asymmetric unit. The metal atom is surrounded by four N,O-donating bidentate ox-ligands that are arranged around the metal centre to give a square antiprismatic coordination polyhedron with a small distortion towards a dodecahedral geometry. Crystal packing is stabilized by intermolecular interactions of adjacent oxine ring systems in neighbouring molecules, as well as hydrogen bonding of the aqua and DMF solvate molecules, linking the molecular entities into a supramolecular three-dimensional network.

This paper discusses the principles and application of risk assessment and management as the basis for environmental management within the mining industry. Unlike in other industries, mines are required to obtain closure certificates in terms of section12 of the Minerals Act, which should ultimately release them from further environmental responsibilities. It is emphasized that the concept of environmental risk assessment and management, when applied correctly will mean that the mine will be identifying and managing environmental issues beyond those set by current legal requirements and management strategies. The focus shifts from conventional minimum legal compliance management to management of real environmental risks. The advantage of this approach is that the perceived ?shifting of legal and management goal posts? due to changing environmental laws or management principles, will not influence or dictate the mine?s short or long-term management objectives or actions, mine closure funds can be more accurately determined and mine closure should become a relatively simple procedure. The risk assessment approach has been applied to the planning of mine closure at Iscor?s Durban Navigation Collieries (Durnacol) in Kwa-Zulu Natal and certain key risk issues such as the long-term risk of water pollution from coal discard dumps have already progressed to fully quantitative risk assessment. This paper will discuss the process, which has been followed to date, with particular emphasis on the most recent phase, namely quantitative risk assessment and management of pollution from coal discard dumps. It is believed that the approach that is being pioneered at Durnacol and which overcomes some of the more obvious deficiencies of both the EMPR and the traditional IEM process will ultimately serve as the model for all responsible mines in South Africa. It is also believed that this approach will enable the authorities to issue closure certificates with the confidence that there will be no unforeseen surprises in the years after closure.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

This paper briefly describes the excavation procedure of a powerhouse, comprising of its incremental excavation, reinforcement measures, and the installed monitoring system. During the first phase of excavation, the data obtained from monitoring of the behavior of Mudstone layers were used to recommend extra support measures. These data are also used to design the support of the powerhouse during its extension phase.
