The Dizon open pit mine of Benguet Corporation in western Central Luzon, Philippines has yielded some 182 000 t copper, and about 26 000 kg gold and 48 000 kg silver as by products since it started operation in November 1979. The 140 million tonne orebody is associated with a small quartz diorite porphyry stock emplaced in volcanic rocks on the basal slope of a stratovolcano complex as stockworks, fracture fillings and disseminated sulphide mineralization averaging 0.43% Cu, 0.93 g/t Au and 2.5 g/t Ag. Intense hydrothermal alteration accompanied the mineralization that developed fairly distinct mineral assemblages within and around the intrusive. Post-ore volcanic activity later gave birth to an upward-flaring diatreme which broke out south of and adjacent to the orebody and partially destroying it. Subsequent volcanic activity buried the mineralized area along with the rest of the stratovolcano's surrounding slopes under a thick deposit of pyroclastic and laharic debris. Erosion eventually removed the volcanic cappings over Dizon and also exposed the quartz diorite porphyry stock which might have resulted in the truncation of a sizeable section of the Dizon deposit. The chain of stratovolcanoes that comprise southeastern Zambales range hugging the southeastern edge of the Zambales ophiolite is part of a west-facing volcanic arc that extends for some 300 km along the western margin of central and southern Luzon whose development has been correlated to the subduction in the Manila Trench located off the west coast of Luzon. Prominent WNW-trending lineaments that cut across the ophiolite appear to be splays of the Philippine Fault whose intersection with the Mt. Pinatubo stratovolcano complex might have localized the emplacement of a number of intermediate stocks along with the gold-rich porphyry copper mineralizations associated with some of them.

Located on the island of Mindanao in the Southern Philippines, the Tampakan copper-gold deposit represents a major high-sulfidation epithermal deposit superimposed on an underlying porphyry copper system. With a recent JORC compliant indicated and inferred resource estimate of 1104 million tonnes at 0.65 per cent copper and 0.26 g/t gold at a 0.3 per cent copper cut-off grade, Tampakan represents the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposit in Southeast Asia. Since its acquisition by Indophil ResourcesÆ affiliate Sagittarius Mines Inc in August 2002, the deposit is the subject of an ongoing preliminary feasibility study into project viability that is initially focused on a higher-grade copper zone in the north-central part of the deposit. The deposit is hosted by a sequence of subaerial andesitic flows (Tampakan Andesite Sequence) related to a highly eroded andesitic stratavolcanic complex of Pliocene age. Detailed mapping and geochronological dating has identified four volcanic cycles or centres that have been sequentially developed and eroded. This stratovolcanic complex is interpreted to lie on the northern extension of the Sangihe volcanic arc that extends from Northern Sulawesi in Indonesia. The Tampakan district is located within a complex tectonic setting dominated by WNW trending wrench faults that form part of the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The Tampakan deposit is located near the intersection of one of several WNW trending splay structures with a prominent NNE trending dilational structure, one of many that transect the host volcanic complex. High-sulfidation style copper-gold mineralisation at Tampakan is broadly associated with and central to a flat-lying tabular body of pervasive silica and silica-clay alteration developed within a district- scale lithocap of advanced-argillic and argillic hydrothermal alteration that extends over an area of 90 km2 within the volcanic complex.

Ever since it made its debut in 1962, in the form of a Robbins 31R, the raiseborer has become an accepted tool in the mining and civil construction industries. The first raiseborer to be used in the Witwatersrand goldfields made its appearance in 1968. This was a Robbins 42R which could raisebore 185m deep holes to 1,22m diameter. From 1968 to 1973 capability increased with the introduction of first the 61R, then the 71R and finally the 83R, which could raisebore 610m deep holes to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for larger holes but the cost of bigger, more powerful machines requiring larger, stronger drill pipe, cutters and other accessories was prohibitive. To avoid replacing existing models such as the 71R, and in order to increase their capability, the concept of reaming in two stages sequentially was developed jointly by a German drilling equipment manufacturer, Wirth, their South African subsidiary, Transbor, and a local contractor, Rocbor Raiseboring and Mining Contractors. The result, the Sequential Reaming Head, proved most successful and existing machines, normally limited to 2,44m diameter holes, could now ream to 3,66m diameter. This created a demand for even larger holes. In order to maximise the use of the sequential reaming head to meet this demand the HG330, and subsequently the HG330SP raiseborer were developed. Using a 4,26m/6,02m cutting head, these machines have raisebored holes 1000m deep in hard rock. The raise- boring of the first major hole to be excavated by this combination, the 484m deep x 6,02m diameter surface shaft at Premier Mine is described. Reference is also made to six other shafts which have been completed or are under construction.

The segment of the Upper Cenozoic volcanic chain (CVZ) located on the western border of South America (16-28¦S lat.) is constituted by an association of strato- volcanoes and ignimbrite sheets, with high K calco-alkaline affinities. Strata-bound volcanoes, mainly of andesitic and dacitic composition, present along the whole chain, and various hydrothermal alteration zones, on the slopes and in the cores of eroded volcanic structures. Some of these altera- tion zones bear epithermal precious metal ores and sulphur deposits, which at present are being exploited. The studied Salar de Gorbea area, located in the Andes of northern Chile (25-26¦S lat.) contains a numer- ous group of Miocene to Quaternary stratovolcanoes, with advanced argillic and extreme silicification hydrothermal alteration in their cores and on their slopes, favoring the formation of great volumes of alunite within altered zones and sulphur deposits in the higher parts of the volcanic edifices. Simultaneously, siliceous hydrothermal breccia of the phreato-magmatic type, with evidences of hydromag- matic explosions are recognizable, allowing, in some cases, the ascent towards the surface of rock fragments belonging to the Paleozoic pre volcanic basement. Radiometric ages obtained in some of the hydro- thermal alteration zones (K-Ar in alunite) are slighty young- er than the unaltered rocks which constitute the strato- volcano. Trace element (Hg, As, Sb, S, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo) patterns in orientative rock samplings show that the studied alterations zones correspond to high sectors of the cpithermal system, without evidences of metallic minerali- zation on surface. The weak erosive action due to the ex- tremely and climatic conditions in this segment of the Andes, has not allowed the cropping out of deeper areas of the hydrothermal alteration zones, in contrast to other Miocene more eroded volcanic edifices and Miocene vol- canic terranes of the Andean Range.

The Early Permian Aldebaran Sandstone is the main hydrocarbon reservoir in the Denison Trough. Contained hydrocarbon gas has a wet gas index (C1/CI - C4) of between 0.87 and 0.97 (N=10), and constituent methane has 813CPDB values ranging from -51.5 to -36.2% (N=10). These values clearly indicate that the gas is thermogenic rather than biogenic. Considering the predominantly humic nature and maturity of all organic source material for the gas, the methane 813C values are anomalously low, with typical values for humic methane present in natural gas formed at similar maturity levels significantly higher at -26 ¦ 5%o. This suggests that, in addition to disseminated organic matter in underlying marine mudrocks of the Cattle Creek Formation, methane substantially more depleted in 13C was derived from coal seams of the Reids Dome beds, a thick coal measure sequence which underlies the Cattle Creek Formation and, in the south, the Aldebaran Sandstone. This methane is likely to have S13C values of between -75 and -40 oo, based on the known isotopic composition of dry gas trapped in humic coals of similar rank in the Sydney Basin and elsewhere in the Bowen Basin. In addition to the low methane S13C values, the contribution of coal seam methane would explain the fact that, (1) methane S13C values do not show the normal increase with decreasing gas wetness, and (2)013C%o (ethane-methane) values do not show the expected decrease with decreasing gas wetness. The presence of co-existing, isotopically heavy CO2 (S13C = +2.0 to +3.4%0, N=3) in the Glentulloch and Merivale Fields is consistent with the view that natural gas in the Aldebaran Sandstone is in part coal seam derived.

GoldcorpÆs Musselwhite mine in north-western Ontario, Canada has in recent years become a world-class deposit. Initially discovered in the early 1960s by Alan and Harold Musselwhite, the then marginal mine eventually started production in 1997 and has to date produced 2.6 Moz of gold. Two million ounces of gold are currently classified as Mineral Reserve and a further 1.2 Moz of gold are classified in the Mineral Resource category for a total gold inventory approaching 6 Moz. Growth of the mineral inventory has been achieved through the successful implementation of strategic planning that sought to extend the mine life through discovery of additional economic zones and increased mined tonnages. Accelerated exploration activity commenced in 2001, at a time when gold price was at its lowest in decades. Focus was placed on building, developing and retaining a highly skilled geological team, maintaining purpose, conducting external reviews and developing a new geological model through research partnerships. Ongoing collaborative research between Lakehead University and Musselwhite mine has seen the development of new structural and geological models through post-graduate and academic studies. Research has included lithogeochemical, stable isotope and structural and metamorphic studies and has led to the evolution of a new mineralisation model (for the mine) and the recognition of brittle and ductile deformation regimes within the mineralised horizons. Exploration drilling continues to provide support for the new geologic model. Gold discoveries have extended known mineralisation 2.3 km along strike from mineral reserves and laterally into parallel zones. The exploration potential to further increase production rates, Mineral Reserves and Resources remains very positive and increases in overall gold inventory are likely. Musselwhite mine has significantly exceeded initial projections for a ten year life-of-mine and a marginal existence.

A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. Given this reasonable success, further testing of the method on other data sets and alternative forward prediction models is recommended.CITATION:Lawlor-O’Neill, M L and Spathis, A T, 2015. The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

The Mary Kathleen tailings storage facility (TSF) contains 7.1 Mt of uranium mill tailings. This waste repository was rehabilitated in the mid-1980s using a multibarrier dry cover. At the time of mine closure, it was predicted that acid mine drainage (AMD) generation would not eventuate and that uranium, heavy metals and radionuclides would be adsorbed within the tailings and not seep from the TSF into the environment. This study reports on the environmental status of the TSF. Gamma-ray measurements indicate an intact dry cover of the waste repository. However, seepage (~0.5 L s-1) of acid (pH 5.71), saline (0.31 per cent), high conductivity (8.8 mS cm-1), slightly oxygenated (DO 2.6 mg L-1), radioactive waters occurs from the toe of the tailings dam into the former evaporation ponds and local drainage system. Seepage waters are calcium-magnesium-sulfate rich with elevated Fe, Mn, Ni, U and Zn values. Oxygenation of tailings seepages causes the precipitation of Fe and coprecipitation and adsorption of other metals (Pb, U, Y), metalloids (As), rare earth elements (Ce, La) and radionuclides (U-235, U-238, Th-227). In contrast, Ba, Ni, Sr, Mn, P, S, Ca, Mg, Na and K as well as Ra nuclides (Ra-226 and Ra-228) remain in solution until pH neutralisation and evaporation lead to their precipitation in efflorescences and sulfate-rich evaporative sediments further downstream. Dry capping of Mary Kathleen uranium mill tailings has resulted in physical containment of the wastes. The dry cover shows no signs of erosion and radiation levels are within acceptable limits. However, the flow rate of surface seepage from the TSF occurs at a much higher rate than predicted. Also, the neutralising potential and adsorption capacity of the tailings and underlying aquifer were overestimated at the time of mine closure. AMD has developed mobilising metals, metalloids, rare earth elements, alkalis, radionuclides and sulfate from the waste repository into surface water seepages.

"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. An ilmenite ore from the Murray Basin was initially characterised using combined X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) techniques. XRF analysis showed the ilmenite sample contained 58.7 wt per cent TiO2 and 26.2 wt per cent Fe2O3. Major impurities included: Cr2O3 (4.5 wt per cent), Al2O3 (2.7 wt per cent), SiO2 (1.9 wt per cent), Mn3O4 (1.5 wt per cent) and MgO (1.1 wt per cent). Manganese and magnesium were present as solid solution components within the ilmenite lattice while the elevated Al2O3 and SiO2 levels were due to separate aluminosilicate gangue minerals. Chromium was associated with discrete chrome spinel gangue phases of variable composition, (Fe,Mg)(Cr,Al)2O4. Quantitative XRD analysis of the sample identified rutile (12 per cent), ilmenite (11 per cent), and pseudorutile (67 per cent) as the main titanium-containing phases and chrome-rich spinels (seven per cent) as the major impurity phase. Minor quartz, aluminosilicates, zircon and monazite were also present. The ilmenite was mixed with synthetic graphite, pressed into pellets and reduced carbothermally in nitrogen at 1200 and 1400°C with C/O molar ratio of 1.2. Titanium oxide in the ilmenite was converted to titanium oxycarbonitride. Iron oxides were reduced to metallic iron. The Changes of impurities as a result of reduction was examined by SEM and EPMA analyses. Iron and chromium oxides within Fe-rich chromite were reduced to form a Fe-Cr-C alloy. Mg-rich chrome spinels were partly reduced at 1200°C. Zircon particles were not reduced at 1200°C, but were significantly reduced at 1400°C, with the particles becoming porous and the silicon being removed.

Al2O3 in natural iron ores generally occurs in goethite, kaolinite, gibbsite, hematite and iron carbonate. When the content of alumina in sinter increases from 1.11 per cent to 3.50 per cent, the reducibility of sinter decreases with the addition of four different types of alumina. When gibbsite and kaolinite are added, the low temperature reduction disintegration (RDI+3.15 mm) of sinter increases with the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent. Furthermore, when adding pure reagent alumina, the increase of Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 3.0 per cent will increase the RDI+3.15 mm of sinter. The addition of ferric oxide–alumina spinel with the Al2O3 content in the range of 1.5 per cent to 2.5 per cent, also increases the RDI+ 3.15 mm of sinter. The influence difference is results from the change of the mineral composition and microstructure of sinter because of the occurrence state of Al2O3. Under the condition that Al2O3 content of sinter is 2 per cent, the porosity of sinter with kaolinite is 37.26 per cent, and the shape is irregular. When gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, the porosity of sinter is about 16 per cent, and the pores are round. When pure reagent alumina is added, the porosity of sinter is 17.49 per cent, and the pores are regular and small. When kaolinite, gibbsite and ferric oxide–alumina spinel are added, platy calcium ferrite is mainly formed in the sinter, and some of it is columnar calcium ferrite. On the other hand, when pure reagent alumina is added, in addition to platy columnar calcium ferrite, acicular calcium ferrite is also formed in the sinter.

The short process of electric furnace steelmaking with direct reduction iron (DRI) as raw material is an important process for smelting high-quality and special steels. In order to prepare high-quality DRI, the pellets with basicity of natural basicity and 0.4 were prepared from magnetite concentrate (MR=0.09, MR=0.4) and hematite concentrate (HR=0.02, HR=0.4). Based on the HYL method, the gas-based direct reduction experiments were conducted under the condition of rich hydrogen (H2/CO = 2.6). The reduction index (RI), reduction swelling (RSI), cold compressive strength (CCS), and phase changes of the pellets were systematically studied. The results show that the RI of four kinds of pellets is greater than four in the temperature range of 800~950°C. For the magnetite pellets, at a fixed reduction temperature, the RSI increases and then gradually decreases, reaching a peak between 50 per cent and 80 per cent. Moreover, the RSI enhances with the increase of the reduction temperature. In general, the RI, RSI, and reduced CCS of the MR=0.09 pellets are better than those of the MR=0.4 pellets. For the hematite pellets, the maximum RSI decreases from 23 per cent to 17 per cent during hydrogen-rich reduction, while the compressive strength increases from 500 to 1070 Nꞏpellet-1. The main reason is that the glass phase generated by the increase of basicity adheres to the surface of hematite grains, hindering the contact between reducing gas and particles. As a result, the apparent activation energy is reduced, which is not conducive to the reduction process. In addition, the glassy phase attached to the hematite reduces the migration rate of Fe2+/Fe3+, resulting in a difference in the reduction expansion rate of hematite in the inner and outer layers of the pellet. Thus, concentric cracks are formed inside the pellets, the RSI increases and reduced CCS decreases.

The production at First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM) Kevitsa Mine, located in northern Finland, commenced during the second quarter of 2012. Presently, the mine processes approximately five and half million tonnes of ore annually, producing nickel, copper and platinum group metal (PGM) concentrates. In order to support fast production ramp-up and optimise the performance of flotation thereafter, an extensive advanced flotation control solution was implemented by Outotec in collaboration with FQM Kevitsa.In addition to basic process instrumentation and process control, each of the 14 Outotec 300 m3 and another 26 cells, ranging from 20–160 m3, have been equipped with state-of-the-art systems providing froth image analysis and automatic froth speed control. Also, the flotation cell levels are stabilised with advanced feed-forward level control.The online analyser provides key feedback information of the process performance for the advanced process control (APC) system. Based on this information, APC system defines grades and recoveries according to rules defined by Kevitsa process metallurgists. This system executes the control strategies for optimising the production of concentrates.Throughout the implementation and support phases, specific and intensive attention was paid to ensure plant personnel gained full understanding of interacting with the system and how to incorporate their process experience and skills to optimise the APC strategy. This level of expertise is also a valuable asset in understanding the APC system’s contribution to the overall performance of the plant as well as providing the ability and confidence to define key performance indicators used for continuous assessment. Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. The æMountain Camp reefÆ at Alford's mine, Wakamarina,Marlborough, had no recorded gold production although assays of 5 - 26 g/t were reported, but it did produce c. l000 kg of scheelite. The lode consists of a lower massive quartz layer, and upper, cm-banded, ribboned quartz layers, and has a very low sulphide content. Within the massive layer, relict early fine-grained mosaic quartz with idioblastic scheelite is surrounded by recrystallised granoblastic coarse-grained quartz with calcite and plagioclase, in which an original ribbon banding texture is mimiced by strings of tiny inclusions. In both the banded and massive layers, rounded quartz grains, created by cataclastic milling of grain margins and along syn-vein fractures, have been partially annealed within later quartz overgrowths. Late fibrous quartz and calcite fill brittle cross fractures.   Deformation events D1 and D2 are associated with mid-late Jurassic metamorphism of the Pelorus Group, D2 producing the main regional schistosity (S2, and the earliest scheelite. D3 is an extensional mylonitic shear event that formed the dominant schistosity in Alford's mine (S3). The quartz lode was emplaced within the mylonite by a series of individual dilation pulses (D4). The D5 event caused crenulation of the S3 mylonite, kink banding and chevron folding of the S2 schist and S3 mylonite, and reverse faulting, rodding and cross-fracturing with late fibrous quartz-calcite veining of the D4 quartz lode.   Fluid influxes during successive dilations of D4 fractures progressively caused recrystallisation of earlier quartz bands on the footwall, annealing and recrystallisation of quartz along milled crystal margins and fractures, and deposition of minor sulphides. There was thus a dynamic interplay between fault dilation, lode fracture, fluid influx, lode band deposition, and lode recrystallisation. There are numerous individual gold deposits in the Archaean greenstone belts of Western Australia, but only 26 have productions and/or quoted reserves in excess of 10 tonnes Au. Most gold production has come from mineralization in shear zones, quartz veins or stockworks in volcanic or intrusive host rocks, particularly tholeiitic basalts or dolerites metamorphosed at sub-amphibolite facies (e.g. Kalgoorlie). Significant prod- uction has also come from BIF-hosted deposits (e.g. Hill 50), and large reserves are quoted for mafic hosts at high metamorphic grade (e.g. Big Bell). Most deposits have marked structural control, great depth extension, and are characterized by zoned alteration haloes of pyritization (with Au), K-metasomatism and carbonation. On the regional scale, most larger volcanic- or intrusive-hosted deposits occur in younger (ca 2.8 b.y.) rift-phase green- stones (Norseman-Wiluna Belt). These belts also have a high prospectivity (36 kg Au/km2 of greenstone belt). Younger (ca 3.0 b.y.) and older (ca 3.5 b.y.) platform-phase green stones of the Murchison and Sodthern Cross Provinces and the east Pilbara, respectively, are progressively less prospective (14 kg Au/km2 and 0.8 kg Au/km2, respectively) and also have progressively smaller deposits. The important regional- and local-scale characteristics of most gold deposits can be explained in terms of a metamorphic- replacement model. In this model, metamorphic H2O-CO2 fluids, focussed by faults and shear zones, infiltrated host rocks and deposit gold at 350 + 50¦C and 1-2 kb, largely in response to fluid-wallrock interaction. In many large deposits, gold precipitation was synchronous with sulphidation of Fe-rich host rocks, but the diversity and abundance of smaller deposits reflects the variety of reactions precipitating gold from ubiquitous, auriferous metamorphic fluids. Regional variations in abundance and size of deposits relate to factors such as tectonic setting, alteration styles and possibly source rocks.

"Characterisation of sulfide minerals (eg pyrite, sphalerite) in historic tailings can assist in determining whether there are economic benefits of reprocessing such materials using modern metallurgical practices. In addition, there are associated environmental advantages if the historic tailings are actively generating acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD). At the Old Tailings Dam (OTD), Savage River, Western Tasmania, 38 Mt of pyritic tailings were deposited from 1967 to 1982; consequently it has been recognised as an AMD source. Long-term management options considered for this site have included the establishment of either a water, hard-engineered or vegetation cover. However, due to geotechnical challenges posed and the lack of success demonstrated by previous pilot studies, these strategies have not been implemented. Instead, resolving the pyrite chemistry can allow for a first-pass assessment of whether reprocessing these tailings is a feasible option as part of a long-term management strategy for this legacy site.Tailings samples (n = 144) were collected across the OTD from up to 2 m depth from five facies (A–E), and four zones (1 to 4; defined by hydrological regime and grain size). These materials were subjected to acid-base accounting (ABA) and mineralogical evaluations to determine their geoenvironmental characteristics. Following this, 26 samples were selected for in-depth laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) investigations to evaluate pyrite chemistry across different tailings facies. The results revealed enrichment of Co and Ni in these materials. Specifically, Co content was up to 3.0 wt per cent, particularly within facies C to E, and Zones 3 and 4. Cobalt is recognised as a critical metal, therefore, reprocessing should be considered as a future rehabilitation option for the OTD, pending resource definition using established codes and practices.CITATION:Parbhakar-Fox, A, Fox, N and Jackson, L, 2016. This study assessed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composites with different height ratios. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted using an acoustic emission monitoring system and XTDIC three-dimensional full-field strain measurement system. The results showed that with the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the uniaxial compressive strength of composite samples increased from 5.26 MPa to 14.61 MPa. The evolution of the deformation localisation zone of the composite samples is closely related to the initiation and propagation of the primary cracks in the coal samples. At the moment when the main fracture of the coal samples occurs, there is a large drop after the peak of the stress-strain curve of the composite samples, and the height of the rock samples increased to varying degrees, which indicated that the failure of the coal samples induced the rebound deformation of the rock samples. With the increase in rock-coal height ratios, the rebound deformation amount of the rock samples decreased from 0.042 mm to 0.008 mm, and the rebound deformation rate decreased from 0.210 per cent to 0.010 per cent. Meanwhile, the rock samples’ rebound deformation releases part of the elastic energy to act on the coal sample, further contributing to the destruction of the coal samples. Compared with single composite coal samples, the coal samples of the composite samples have much more failures. In addition, with the increase in rock-coal height ratio, the input energy density, elastic energy density, post-peak release energy density, and residual elastic energy density of the composite samples increased, the dissipation energy density decreased, and the percentage of pre-peak elastic energy density increased from 98.56 per cent to 99.86 per cent. These results revealed the deformation failure characteristics of rock-coal composite with different height ratios and provided a theoretical reference for understanding the underground dynamic rock failures.

Xstrata CopperÆs Mount Isa Copper Operations is located in mineral rich north-west Queensland and is one of the largest sources of copper in the world. This world-class underground operation is planned to produce over 6.6 million tonnes of copper ore in 2007 from the X41 and Enterprise Mines. With an underground mining history of over 50 years and underground reserves of over 83 million tonnes at 2.6 per cent copper, mine planning for the future becomes an exciting challenge for the technical team due to the older nature of certain areas. The 1100 Orebody of the X41 mine was one of the first places that copper mining occurred, with its discovery in 1953 - 1954 and mining commencing in the 1960s. Sublevel open stoping mining methods have been employed since that time as the means of extraction, using a primary-secondary sequence to maximise stope turnaround time. Large Transverse Pillars within the 1100 orebody were not mined out in order to provide access for ventilation, power, orepasses and other services. The Panel Pillar, 4180XC and 4010XC pillars are three such Transverse Pillars in the 1100 orebody that will be mined as a final retreat. This paper discusses the technical challenges and issues associated with the extraction of Q390 stope, one of the stopes located in the Panel Pillar, and the design solutions to overcome these issues. Managing the exposure of backfilled stopes of variable fill strength, ensuring the stability of the crown, stope walls and drawpoints, managing vertical openings, re-establishing service networks, and stope filling are the critical issues given consideration for the final design of Q390 stope and other such stopes within a Transverse Pillar. Communication and coordination between the different departments in the mine are essential for the necessary work to be completed in a timely manner to bring pillar stopes into production.
