In some underground hard-rock mines, squeezing compressive ground conditions are influenced by the presence of rock foliation and high stress. In these cases, the orientation of the foliation with respect to the drift direction has a considerable impact on the magnitude of the resulting deformation. Irrespective of the reinforcement and support strategy, keeping drives developed sub-parallel to the rock foliation operational is difficult, and often requires excessive rehabilitation during the lifetime of the excavation. This study uses field observations and convergence measurements at the LaRonde and Lapa mines of Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd to provide guidelines of the anticipated squeezing levels at these operations.

In the experimental concentration of Vermont talc-magnesite ores, talc concentrates and tailings rich in magnesite were obtained. On account of the possible market value of the magnesite, the tailings are given consideration' in this report along with the talc. After some comments about the talc industry, the magnesite that accrued as tailings will be considered. Then the flotation results will follow.

Following extensive trials on a 100 000 tpa Research and Development facility at Kwinana, Western Australia, Hismelt Corporation (wholly owned by Rio Tinto) are confident of the future commercial success of this technology. The Hlsmelt process uses iron ore fines and non-coking coals to produce molten pig iron suitable for feeding to BOF and EAF steelmaking vessels. The unique process configuration combines direct injection of raw materials into the molten iron bath, high rates of metal and slag mixing, and effective post-combustion of the bath gases to achieve efficient coal utilisation. This is the key to the strong economic performance of the process.

The Gosowong epithermal Au-Ag deposits, located on the island of Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia, are owned and operated by PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals, a joint venture between Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (25 per cent).The Gosowong deposit was a greenfields discovery in 1994. Subsequent brownfields discoveries, most recently in 2009, have resulted in a total endowment of more than 6 Moz Au. The three main deposits include Gosowong, Toguraci and Kencana, and as of December 2013, production comprised 5.7 Mt Au at 24 g/t for 4.3 Moz with remaining resources of 4.2 Mt Au at 13 g/t for 1.7 Moz.Mineralisation primarily occurs in multistage veins, breccias and stockwork veins, with at least four texturally- and mineralogically-distinct vein events, including: banded crystalline quartz, quartz-adularia, quartz-chlorite and quartz-sulfide stages. Vein mode, texture and mineralogy are zoned around areas of maximum dilation, vein width and vein grade. Within banded quartz-chlorite, grades of >1000 g/t Au are common. Anomalous Au-Ag-Pb-As-Sb-K-Li geochemistry in rocks is commonly associated with the epithermal mineralisation. Four major types of hypogene alteration are recognised at Gosowong: silicification (quartz-illite-adularia-pyrite) within the immediate vein zone, argillic (illite-quartz-pyrite) alteration enveloping the vein zone, advanced argillic (dickite-kaolinite-quartz) alteration above and adjacent to the vein zone and within the overlying Kayasa Formation, and propylitic (chlorite-epidote-albite-calcite-pyrite) alteration within the footwall and distal to the vein zone.CITATION:Fitzpatrick, N, Harris, A, MacCorquodale, F and Wardiman, D, 2015. This paper presents the results of a study on cellular acclimation of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans to sulfur biooxidation in terms of cells growth and changes in surface properties and morphologies of both cells and sulfur particles. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells were grown faster and demonstrated higher concentration in the soluble thiosulfate substrate than in nonsoluble hydrophobic S0 substrate. The results showed that A. ferrooxidans cells acclimated to the sulfur biooxidation by actively expressing some extracellular polymers substance and maybe some outer membrane proteins that modified the surface properties of both sulfur particles and the cells themselves. In addition, the results showed that the A. ferrooxidans cells were able to dynamically adsorb to or desorb from the surface of sulfur particles. The cells aggregating onto the S0 surface enhanced the use of S0 substrate by the bacteria cells. This mode may be one of the most important characteristics for the better growth and propagation of the cells in solid sulfur-containing media.

O avanço tecnológico tem gerado demanda crescente por materiais que possam ser utilizados em alta temperatura e ambientes oxidantes, o que inclui ligas intermetálicas MR–Si–B (MR = metal refratário) com estruturas multifásicas. Assim, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a microdureza de ligas do sistema Hf–Si–B na seção isotérmica a 1600ºC, na região rica em Hf. Ligas Hf–Si–B foram fundidas com lâminas de Hf (min. 99,8%), Si (min. 99,998%) e B (min. 99,5%), em forno a arco e tratadas termicamente a 1600 ºC em atmosfera de argônio. As relações de fases nessas ligas foram identificadas por difração de raios-X e por contraste, em imagens obtidas via microscopia eletrônica de varredura no modo elétrons retroespalhados. As ligas tiveram sua dureza medida pelo método Vickers (microdureza) com cargas de 0,05 kgf e 0,2 kgf e tempo de aplicação de 20 s. Os resultados, obtidos da média aritmética das medições realizadas nas regiões heterogêneas de cada liga, mostraram uma dureza média de 11,08 GPa, com pequeno coeficiente de variação de 3,8%. Os boretos HfB2 (19,34 GPa) e HfB (11,76 GPa) apresentaram dureza mais elevada que os silicetos Hf2Si (8,57 GPa), Hf5Si3 (9,63 GPa), Hf3Si2 (11,66 GPa), Hf5Si4 (10,00 GPa), HfSi (10,02 GPa) e HfSi2 (8,61 GPa).

Modern production equipment has been designed with greater productive capacity and higher reliability to meet the rigorous operating demands of the mining industry. These improvements have also made the equipment more complex and challenging to maintain. Whether these equipment enhancements contribute to more effective mining operations depends on the overall quality of maintenance. Maintenance is not a stand-alone activity. Although its quality depends primarily on maintenance, cooperation and support from other departments, coupled with the skillful guidance of mining managers, greatly influence maintenance success. Therefore, maintenance risk management must look beyond maintenance itself. Successful maintenance risk management begins with an assessment of the maintenance-related interactions of all mining departments within the mine’s stated operating strategy.

The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. This paper reports studies showing the effects of delay scatter on the peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibration using a multiple seed wave (MSW) vibration model developed in recent years. The case studies also show the advantage of accurate delay timing on frequency control of blast vibration. The site parameters used in one of the studies are from a case in which the MSW model has been tested and confirmed to yield accurate predictions. This study uses an open pit blast design and a tunnel design in which blast vibrations using electronic detonators are compared with those from pyrotechnic detonators. Mean peak particle velocity (PPV) and the 97.5% upper bound PPV are compared. It is found that both these values increase significantly with the increase of the coefficient of variation of the site parameter. Using an open pit blast design, the modeling shows that electronic initiation shifts vibration energy to the expected frequency for a selected point of interest. However, for the same design of nominal initiation timing pyrotechnic detonators fail to shift vibration to the expected frequency due to its large scatter of timing.

The human race has been exposed to copper for thousands of years, as copper and gold were the metals first used by man (1). if According to Ramazzini (2), "of all the metals that man's ingenuity has contrived to dig out of the bowels of the earth, iron and copper are the most useful, far more so than silver and gold." Workings of copper in the oldest known copper mine associated with the smelting of this metal have been traced back to 4300 B. C. Facts revealed by archeological research in India, Austria, Hungary, France, Italy, and Spain indicate that the use of copper probably began about 5000 B.C. (3), and that about 4000 B.C. a copper age came intermediate between the stone and bronze ages (4). Copper ores are rather widely distributed and are found in nearly every country. Many of the copper minas of Europe have been worked since before the Roman Empire. The must important mines in Europe occur in the district around Huelva, extending into Spain and Portugal. The German deposits are located mainly about Mansfeld (Rhenish Prussia); they have been worked continuously for 1,000 years. Some of the mines in Africa have been worked by the natives for centuries, and China has produced copper from shallow pits for thousands of years. India also has many ancient mines worked in the early centuries (2).

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

Slope monitoring has been an important issue in static terrestrial lidar for some time. Several solutions for monitoring the progress of a slide have been devised over the years. All of these solutions have required users to be in the field operating the lidar equipment. This paper presents a new system developed using the Optech ILRIS-HD or ILRIS-LR lidar and the scripting language of PolyWorks to produce an autonomous slope monitoring system. This system has proven invaluable in detecting and alerting mine workers to potential danger within their mine sites. It has already been deployed in two mine sites and is scheduled to be installed at a third.

"SynopsisRotary drilling with rolling tricone bits is the most widely used method for drilling large-diameter blast-holes in large surface mining operations. This drilling method is applicable to a wide range of soft to hard rock materials. This paper presents a fuzzy model for predicting the penetration rate of tricone rotary blast-hole drilling. The model is based on data obtained during the drilling of blastholes in rocks with various uniaxial compressive strengths in the Veliki Krivelj open pit mine, Bor, Serbia. The model was developed using the fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB with the Mamdani inference system. The fuzzy model was tested with 23% of the total dataset. The results obtained show the high reliability of predicting the penetration rates. Although there are possible limitations in applying the model to other open pit mines because of differences in rock properties, the prediction methodology applied in this paper can be used in many other predictions of the penetration rates.IntroductionAccording to Tamrock, rotary blast-hole drill operations depend on four important elements:•,Torque in the drill string drive sufficient to turn the bit in any strata encountered•,A high bit loading capability (pulldown force) sufficient for optimum penetration•,An air volume sufficient to remove chips generated during the drilling and to provide cool air to the drill bit bearings•,The selection of the proper type of bit for the material being drilled (Tamrock, 1984).The effects of rock mass parameters on the choice of the type of tricone bits were investigated by Kricak (1997)."

Collecting the clay fraction of active stream sediment from a flowing stream for geochemical analysis i a difficult process. One either takes a sample of dry fine-grained sediment from the stream bank (dry weather and dry sample are uncommon in parts of New Zealand and Tasmania), or dredges up a sample of sand and mud out of the stream.The latter method produces a soggy ample bag full of mud and sand, with varying amounts of gravel, depending on the size of the stream. The water can be filtered from such a sample by means of a Buchner filter funnel, but is difficult to obtain a vacuum in the bush. This problem can be solved by using a small hand- queeze bellows such as used in priming petrol pumps on outboard petrol motors. The common laboratory hand bellows is not powerful enough.A 70 mm diameter two-piece polythene Buchner filter funnel (Fig. 1) can be used. A length of rubber tubing is fitted around the inlet valve of the hand bellows and this valve is then jammed into the pipe at the bottom of the filter funnel (the polythene pipe may be trimmed with a knife to fit over the inlet valve of the bellows). The vacuum is generated and maintained by squeezing the hand bellows.The technique of collecting a sample of the clay fraction is to dredge a sample of the fine-grained active stream sediment out of the stream with a container, such as a plastic mug. The sample is agitated to get the clay fraction into suspension and the muddy suspension is then decanted into the Buchner funnel. The desired clay fraction is obtained as a thin film on the filter paper.If the "fines" are also required, a filter of nylon bolting cloth (stretched across the mouth of a short length of 80 mm diameter polythene pipe and attached by rubber bands or a concentric polythene pipe) can be placed over the mouth of the Buchner funnel and the whole sample of stream sediment...

Although the occurrence of deposits of titanium minerals on Kenya’s present day beaches and adjacent dune systems has been well documented, the potential for older formations to host economically viable deposits had not been recognised until recently. The Magarini sands formation in Kenya has been found to contain deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon in quantities and grades that have the potential to be commercially exploited. Since 1995, Tiomin Resources Inc. has explored these deposits and has identified one deposit, the Kwale project, as being able to support the development of a mine producing some 300,000 tpa ilmenite, 75,000 tpa rutile and 37,000 tpa zircon. Tiomin plans to start production by late 2002. Construction of a US$137 million operation is set to commence in the first half of 2001.

"In the mineral processing industries, there is an increasing need to design thickeners which are able to produce high density underflows usually referred to as “paste”.The behaviour of a flocculated suspension in compression needs to be well understood in order to arrive at a reliable thickener tank configuration (i.e. diameter, cone angle and depth) for a required paste result.As a suspension approaches paste consistency, it’s fluid characteristics change markedly. It develops a high yield stress, and may have an increased tendency to form agglomerates, which lead to a phenomenon known as “rotating beds”, “donuts”, or “islands”. Applications such as Autoclave feed thickeners, paste backfill and some counter current washing (CCD) circuits are all examples of potential paste thickening applications. The principle of paste thickeners is that the compression zone is much deeper than on either high rate (HRT) or high compression (HCT) units; generally 3 metres or more. As the compression zone gets deeper, theunderflow density for a given flux rate (tph/m2) increases, as a result of two factors:1. Longer bed settling time. Settling flocs move relative to one another and release interstitial fluid when they are in compression. Increasing bed residence time achieves higher density underflow as more fluid is removed.2. The nett weight of the bed creates a compressive force on the settling flocs. This force increases with depth, so that the flocs at the bottom of the bed experience the highest compressive force. This represents the driving force to expel interstitial fluid and hence increase bed density."

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

The US$1,850 million EastLink project is a 39km tollway and includes twin 3-lane,1.5km long, undrained driven tunnels. The hard rock tunnels are being built to avoid passing the motorway through the Mullum Mullum Valley and so to help preserve the unique flora and fauna in the area. This paper describes several of the key issues in the tunnel design and construction, including: the integration of the temporary support design with the Contractor’s tunnel excavation and support procedures, including sharing of responsibility between the Designer and Contractor for support type selection and the production of a project specific rock mass classification system to enable more objective determination of ground conditions. detailed hydrogeological assessments during the design and construction phases to allow confirmation of design loads for the tunnel lining design and the various suite of waterproofing tools in order to meet the project inflow requirements. development of a pre-cast invert solution to the main tunnel secondary lining to enable faster lining construction and to minimize risks to the tunnel membrane associated with fixing reinforcement and construction traffic.
