Pyrite Bioleaching and Slag Neutralisation - Two Treatments in a Single Process for Recovering Valuable Metals from Both Materials Very often the production of copper sulfide concentrate yields pyrite concentrate as a by-product. This is the case at the Knre mine in northern Turkey. This kind of concentrate may contain low grades of valuable non-ferrous metals. Bioleaching of such pyrite concentrates is a processing technique to solubilise metals like copper, zinc or cobalt in a sulfuric acid pregnant solution. The pyrometallurgical processing of copper sulfide concentrate produces slag that still contains valuable metals in varying concentrations. Slag is used in many ways: as aggregates, ballast, pavement material, in cement production and glass making. Due to its relatively alkaline nature, it can also be used to neutralise acidic solutions. A preliminary study of the bioleaching of the pyrite concentrate (Co 0.28 per cent, Cu 0.56 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 42.6 per cent) produced at Knre has been undertaken with the assessment of the neutralisation of the acidic bioleach solution by using old slag (Co 0.29 per cent, Cu 1.70 per cent and sulfur as sulfide 0.89 per cent) stockpiled on the site. The main conclusions of the study were as follows: Knre pyrite was amenable to bioleaching at 40¦C. Cobalt solubilisation directly related to pyrite degradation reached a maximum yield above 90 per cent. Final copper recovery was limited to approximately 66 per cent not directly related to bacterial growth and pyrite oxidation. Slag could be used as a substitute for limestone as a neutralising agent in the bioleaching tanks. Cobalt and copper could be recovered from pyrite concentrate and slag simultaneously from both materials. A pre-feasibility study is underway to carry out a preliminary cost estimate of an installation for cobalt and copper production from these two materials processed in a single operation.

This circular deals primarily with the various methods of longwall mining used in some mines in certain districts of the Middle Western States. In some instances underground methods were considered comprehensively, and in others only the actual methods of mining and face advance were noted. Results obtained by the mines in output per man were compared only on the basis of an operating day, since idle time and number of men employed would not, be comparable due to the great difference between mines in different districts. Man-hours per ton per operating day are noted in a general way. Material and power costs are not included. ACKNOWLEDGMENT The information used in preparing this paper was obtained through the courtesy and cooperation of the presidents and other officials of the comparnies operating the mines described. The workshop will be presented in two parts. Part I will cover the COMPU-BLAST Blast Design and Timing Analysis Program. Part II will focus on the ALPHA-BUST Vibration Analysis and Waveform Simulation Program. The information presented in the workshop will show how these two programs can be used together to help plan blast designs and aid in the control of vibration effects.

O EOF é um forno básico a oxigênio caracterizado pelo conceito de pré-aquecimento da carga sólida baseado na energia da corrida anterior. Mesmo com um sistema supervisório, a operação era totalmente manual. O trabalho consistiu no desenvolvimento e implantação de modelos matemáticos, objetivando atingir a temperatura e composição química programada para vazamento. O sistema de equações consideram todas as entradas metálicas com as respectivas composições químicas e define a quantidade necessária de energético ou refrigerante, além da adição de cales conforme a basicidade e teor de MgO objetivados na escória. O desenvolvimento passou inicialmente por um conhecimento profundo do processo, dada a excelência e originalidade do forno EOF, que é diferente dos demais convertedores a oxigênio. A seguir, foram definidos padrões e práticas operacionais que garantissem a reprodutibilidade do processo, para, finalmente, permitir o cálculo através de modelos matemáticos. Com a automação do processo foram conseguidos expressivos ganhos de produtividade, redução no consumo de materiais, aumento do rendimento metálico e menor consumo de refratários.

A system to continuously measure the concentration of radon in mine ventilating air has been developed and tested in a uranium mine. In use, the air/radon mixture to be monitored is pumped through filters into a scintillation cell where nuclear decay of the radon produces flashes of light. These are electronically counted, giving a quantitative measure of the radon present. Air is continuously drawn from the mine atmosphere into the radon sensor box. This air sample passes through two filters into the detector cell as shown in the schematic diagram. A portion of the radon in the detector cell will experience nuclear decay, producing polomium 218 and an alpha particle. The alpha particles from the fraction that decays strike a zinc-sulfide coating on the inside wall of the cell and produce flashes of light. These enter a photo-multiplier tube which records each flash as an electrical pulse. An amplifier increases the voltage of each pulse, allowing electronic screening to remove noise and other undesirable pulses. The remaining pulses are counted by a conventional data acquisition system.

"In February 2018, drawn in part by the states’ proud mining heritage, SME took its Annual Conference & Expo to Minneapolis, MN for the first time. More than 5,000 people and 554 exhibitors converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center for three days of networking, exhibiting and technical sessions.The state’s mining legacy, one that continues today, is fueled in large part by its vast iron ore resources in the northern part of the state. The historical significance of the mines in the Mesabi Range, otherwise known as the Iron Range north of Lake Superior, cannot be understated. “Mining is a way of life here,” said U.S. Congressman Rick Nolan of Minnesota’s 8th Congressional District. A native of the Iron Range, the three-term U.S. congressman was one of the featured speakers of the opening keynote session. “We like to think we contribute enormously to the well-being of this country and the world. We were the source of the iron ore and steel that helped win two world wars. And we like to think that we are part of the progress that has taken place in the United States ever since.” Nolan kicked off the keynote sessionthat focused on innovation and its part in the mining industry. The session included Rene Aquilar, vice president of corporate affairs and sustainability, Antofagasta Minerals Group; Bob Anderson, vice president for research and development, 3M; Rolf Weberg, executive director, Natural Resources Research Institute, University of Minnesota-Duluth and Christopher Beck, executive vice president and president, Nalco Water. The panel session looked at U.S. and global minerals production, and the importance of the United States to maintain a major role in the minerals industry, both as a producer and as a technology leader. The panel also touched on the global mining industry and the issues that impact mining around the world. Sustainability, the use of water in mining and earning a social license to operate were among the topics discussed by the panel.Speaking of the importance of mining, Nolan conceded that talking about the benefits of mining to the crowded auditorium at the SME conference might be akin to a preacher speaking to the choir, but, following the adage that all politics are local, he continued to illustrate his point by emphasizing the importance of mining to the Great Lakes.“A study by Homeland Security concluded that 13 percent of the nation’s GDP comes out of Lake Superior through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie and most of that is iron ore,” said Nolan. “That study found that, if those locks fail, it would create a national depression. It would put millions of people out of work. That ore and those minerals supply the steel mills, the auto industry, the heavy industrials. They are the heart of our economy. The study concluded that if the states that make up the Great Lakes were a nation, it would be the fourth largest economy in the world.”"

New technology for on-line particle size analysis of mineral slurries has opened up new applications for particle size measurement. In some cases the particle size distribution of the final concentrate is an important quality issue. This paper discusses established on-line particle size analysis technologies and presents experiences on the use of a new technique employing laser diffraction in several minerals processing operations. The main innovations in the new instrument are a simple dilution system and multiple scattering correction algorithm, which allows wide solids content variations of diluted sample in the measurement cell. Representative sample for laser measurement is produced by a simple and reliable dilution system. The applications discussed are; Blaine number measurement of Fe concentrate before pelletizing, grinding of variable batches of ore and paste thickener control.

In, one stage of the purification sequence of the zinc sulphate electrolyte used at Risdon, cobalt is, precipitated as cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, which is separated from the solution by filtration. Owing to the method of conducting the purification the filter cake contains much gypsum, unconsumed calcium hydroxide, basic zinc sulphate, and entrained zinc sulphate solution, Small amounts of iron and copper that have escaped previous purification steps are also precipitated with the cobalt as nitroso-,B-naphtholate. Thisprecipitate, normally carrying about 18% cobalt, is the raw material for the production of cobalt oxide, cobalt sulphate and cobalt metal.COBALT OXIDEThe main problem in the preparation of a reasonable grade of cobalt oxide from the filter cake is the economic separation ,of the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate from the gypsum. This was solved by the application of flotation. It was discovered that the cobalt nitroso-,B-naphtholate, under correct conditions, would float without any addition agent, giving a relatively high grade concentrate. A plant, was built and has been in operation since 1936. The filter cake is pulped with water and pumped to one of two mechanically agitated tanks, eath capable of holding one day's output. Sulphuric acid is added until the free acid concentration reaches about 3 gm. per litre. Basic zinc sulphate is dissolved and calcium hydroxide converted to gypsum. The pulp, carrying about 2t lb. of solids per gallon, is pumped at a suitable rate to the first of a series of 10 flotation, boxes.. A general increase in employment prevailed in the stone-quarrying industry of the United States during 1941 compared with 1940. Likewise, more accidents occurred to men working in and about the quarries, with the result that the accident-frequency rate for the industry as a whole was higher in 1941 than in the previous year. Reports from operating companies to the Bureau of Mines, covering open and underground quarries, as well as rock-crushing and rock-dressing plants, cement mills, and limekilns at or near the quarries, showed a total of 86,123 men employed and a total of more than 22 million man-days of labor performed during 1941. The total working time of the industry averaged 260 days per man. Measured in man-hours, the volume of work equaled 173 million, an average of 2,011 man-hours per employee.

This report describes the feasibility of mining the oil-shale deposits of the Piceance Creek basin in Colorado by an integrated open pit system. The study is based upon a comprehensive analysis of pertinent environmental, economic, and engineering factors. Ten mining cases are investigated, and the mine design and cost estimates for each case are presented in this report. Nine of the cases represent three cutoff grades, defining oil shale ore as equal to and above 15 gallons per ton (gpt), 20 gpt, and 25 gpt, at three ore production levels of 500,000 tons per day (TPD), 1,250,000 TPD, and 2,500,000 TPD. The tenth case is an alternate design of the 500,000 TPD production rate at the above 15 gpt cutoff grade. The report consists of Volume I, a technical and cost comparison of the ten cases; Volume II-Part I, a detailed explanation of the estimating methods used; and Volume II-Part 2, a more detailed discussion of the technical and cost features of the ten cases than is presented in Volume I.

A fabricação de matrizes para forjamento a quente vem sendo estudada com maior atenção nos últimos anos devido à necessidade de fabricação das ferramentas com maior rapidez e menor custo, estudo do processo de usinagem, com melhores propriedades mecânicas a fim de aumentar sua vida útil. Para atender as atuais necessidades do mercado são utilizados softwares de CAD e CAM e principalmente de máquinas CNC, que além da rapidez garantem a qualidade da usinagem das matrizes. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar, através de um estudo de caso, as etapas para a fabricação das matrizes superior e inferior, para forjamento a quente. Foram utilizados sistemas de CAD e CAM, o SolidWorks para modelagem da peça e das cavidades da ferramenta, e o software Edgecam para a programação e simulação da usinagem. As facilidades obtidas com a integração entre os sistemas CAD/CAM e máquina CNC conferem a manufatura de ferramentas muitos benefícios, dentre eles destaca-se a rapidez com a qual se pode fabricar uma matriz.

THE Dawson coal-mines are owned and operated by the Stag Canon Fuel Co., of which Dr. James Douglas is President and E. L. Carpenter general manager. The property is situated in Colfax county, N. M., and the openings now in operation are in townships 28 and 29 N. R. 20 E., and township 28 N. R. 21 E., shown in Fig. 1. The mines are part of the southern end of the Raton coal-field, which extends north into Colorado and embraces many coal-camps of the Trinidad section. II. GEOLOGY. Geologically, the coal-measures, commonly known as the Laranmie series of the Cretaceous system, have a thickness of about 800 ft. in the vicinity of Dawson. The coal makes an excellent coke, and, according to some authorities, its coking properties are clue to the action of intruded sheets and sills of igneous rock, the sheets occasionally thickening into masses resembling laccoliths, at such places making nearer approach to the coal and sometimes producing small areas of natural coke. There are but few dikes through¬out the entire southern portion of the field and little or no faulting along the dikes. In some parts of this great coal-field the intrusive sheets are far removed in the green shales below the coal-measures, and are so much altered as to be difficult of identification. There is but little disturbance of the strata through¬out the Raton coal-field in as far as it extends into New Mexico. There has been a persistent need to forecast roof falls so that miner’s exposure to hazardous underground environments can be minimized. Several monitoring techniques have been developed and are used today with varying levels of acceptance in the mining industry. This paper examines the potential for monitoring microseismic emissions activity as a means of forecasting roof falls. The use of this activity to forecast roof falls has drawn only limited attention, resulting in a lack of published field performance data. This deficiency is being partially addressed by analyzing data obtained during longwall mining at Moonee Colliery in 1998. The Moonee data base contains a wealth of information concerning roof fall forecast parameters and the seismic alarm criteria used to develop these forecasts. Four seismic alarm criteria were developed and used by Moonee with varying degrees of success. Roof falls were forecasted 73% of the time with average forecast times of 54 minutes. Ninety percent of the predicted roof falls had a warning time, i.e., the time between warning and roof fall event, of greater than 1 minute. The fraction of forecasted roof falls decayed logarithmically as a function of warning time, until only 20% of events were predicted more than 100 minutes prior to roof falls. False alarms occurred in 50% of the warnings. Many of the false alarms were quickly followed by a cessation in mining which could have temporarily halted the on-going failure process. If mining had continued immediately after the false alarms, a roof fall may have occurred soon after. The microseismic activity collected from Moonee Colliery demonstrates that techniques to forecast roof rock instabilities in underground mines are possible.

"In December 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, the U.S. Department of Justice, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) and Alpha Appalachia Holdings entered into a nonprosecution agreement related to the explosion at the Upper Big Branch Mine (UBB) that killed 29 miners. This coal operation was owned by Performance Coal Co., an affiliate of Massey Energy Co., which was acquired by ANR in June 2011, more than a year after the UBB explosion. Pursuant to the agreement, ANR agreed to:• Establish a trust within 120 days.• Pay a total of US$48 million into the trust to be used solely to fund and administer research and development (R&D) projects to improve mine health and safety.• Administer the trust by three highly qualified individuals with academic and/or professional backgrounds in mine health and safety.In April 2012, the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health was created. The three directors - Michael Karmis, president; David Wegman, vice presidenttreasurer, and Keith Heasley, vice presidentsecretary - approved a plan to expend both the interest and principal of the trust, aiming at an 8-10 year research horizon. The foundation also appointed David Belden, an experienced manager of nonprofits and professional associations, as the first executive director of the foundation. The IRS approved the foundation’s tax-exempt application, as described in Section 501c(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, on Dec. 18, 2012. The board established guiding principles of the foundation, which are as follows:• Mission: to improve mine health and safety through funding R&D projects to qualified academic institutions and other not-for-profit organizations.• Vision: to enable miners in the future to be free of work related injury or disease by the implementation of the results of the projects funded by the foundation and undertaken by the best researchers from any discipline that can contribute. The use of scrapers in mining and earthmoving operations is not new, in fact they are one of the earliest methods of bulk earthmoving. A single machine which can load, haul, and dump material with a minimum of ancilliary support is a highly productive and cost-efficient method of earthmoving. In recent times scrapers have been unpopular due to perceived problems and operational limitations, but the last couple of years have seen a resurgence in the use of scrapers in the Bowen Basin as a primary prestripping tool. The main operational limitation of scrapers is the economic operating range. maximum productivity and lowest cost per bcm is achieved on short leads, as the lead distance increases the cost per bcm quickly reaches and then overtakes that of an truck-excavator fleet. The geometry of a ætraditionalÆ coal mine does not readily allow short leads for prestrip fleets due to the nature of dragline stripping operations. The strip arrangement means that material has to be taken around the end of the pit, meaning a longer haul distance than the actual point-to-point distance between load and dump. This can be alleviated by using pit bridges, however these can cause spoil problems for draglines if not properly planned and have been avoided by many mines. Due to the economic haul distance limitation of scrapers, truck-excavator fleets have become the normal method utilised. Currently more geologically complex mines are opening up, which do not allow traditional down-dip strip mining to occur. Cross-dip mining methods allow for short leads between prestrip loading and dumping areas, hence scrapers and bulk doze are realistic alternatives to a truck-excavator fleet in the prestrip environment. Keeping the lead distance to a minimum a fleet of 657Æs can move material at a very low cost. The other main operational limitation of scrapers is the type of material that can be economically excavated. Hard material can lead to damage to the bowl, free-flowing sand will not readily stay in the bowl leading to reduced load factors. Ripping the material with a dozer prior to excavating can lead to improved loading time, and greatly reduced GET consumption. When considering scrapers for prestrip operations a number of things must be considered: is the lead distance within the economic haul distance? should twin power (push-pull) or single power (dozer pushed) scrapers be used? do I need to rip, what should I rip with? what ancilliary support is required? is there another system already available on-site which is currently under utilised? This paper considers the parameters under which large twin power scrapers are the most effective way of undertaking prestrip operations.

In this report, the application of the PHU/MVS program is demonstrated through the use of a simple but realistic mine ventilation program. The report details, the problem description, the input data required and the various output features of the simulator. The PSU/MVS program is written in Fortran IV for use with IBM 370/168 computers. A version of the program that can be used in CDC computers is also available. A ventilation network consisting of 531 branches, 300 nodes and 5 fans took 48 seconds for solution on The Pennsylvania State University's IBM 370/168 computer. Appendix I of this report is the User?s Manual for the program. Appendices II and III contain the input data listing, and selected output listing for; the application. Appendix IV provides tables for leakage, friction factors and shape factors.
