This publication summarizes, for all interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration in-house projects programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1981 (October 1, 1980 - September 30, 1981) under its Minerals Health and Safety Technology program. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

"This paper had its origin in a panel discussion organized by the Canadian Uranium Producers Metallurgical Committee (CUPMC) at their Annual Meeting in Blind River in May, 1964. The reason for the panel was the formation of the National Uranium Tailings Research Program funded in the amount of ten million dollars by the Federal government. According to the bureaucrats in charge the program would seek to solve the perceived problems as well as any actual problems they believed existed with uranium tailings. Dr. Allan Ashbrook of Eldorado Nuclear chaired this panel and his summation of the panel's purpose was set out as ""Regulation and the Regulatory Process in the Nuclear Industry, Where Have We Been, Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going""?"" This paper will try to relate these questions to the whole mineral industry.The Canadian Mining Association has been telling us our natural resources are today required only if they are competitively priced with those produced in so called ""third world"" countries where labour rates are lower, environmental restrictions may be less and every effort is made by the local government to sell their product. It is in this hostile economic climate that the Canadian mining industry now finds itself. Before going further I want to stress these comments apply only to: a) Mines financed by private capital in a free enterprise society.b) Mining companies want to operate in an environmentally safe manner. However, they must earn a profit because no company financed with private capital can borrow money ad infinitum.WHERE HAVE WE BEENNone of us today would want to return to the days when the mill waste management system consisted of pumping the tailing to the nearest slope and letting nature's law of gravity do the rest. This was the way it was in early gold mines in Nova Scotia, tin mines in Cornwall, England or silver mines in Cobalt, Ontario and survives today in countries where climate, customs and methods of doing business are far different from Canada. As mill tonnage rates increased, more sophisticated systems evolved often designed for mining areas with different climates. Systems imported from arid climates such as south-west United States retained the solids but allowed bacterial oxidation of the sulphides promoting acid drainage. Environmental regulations were introduced and Canadian mines learned to handle tailings in our climates."

The lean, but extensive iron ore deposits of the Dunderland Valley north of Mo i Rana, Norway, is the raw material for the Rana Mines which is a division of the state owned steel mill A/S Norsk Jernverk. Activities for the exploitation of the orebodies were commenced in 1902 by the English Dunderland Iron Ore Company. During its operating period the company constructed a total of two large scale concentrating plants. The activities were strongly marked by technical problems and labor disputes. Thus actual production was limited to the years 1904-1908, 1928-1931 and 1937-1939. During these periods a total of 1.9 million tons of crude ore was mined and 0.6 million tons of concentrates produced for export. The present plant commenced operations in late fall of 1964. Up to and including 1976 about 26.6 million tons of crude have been put through the concentrating plant and about 10.7 million tons of concentrate produced.

The aerospace and automotive industries are facing a significant risk for cumulative trauma disorders from high-repetition, long-duration tasks. Additional risk factors such as shocks, vibrations and sustained uncomfortable postures oftentimes contribute to musculoskeletal, neurological injuries associated with the hand-arm system. The power tools used for the operation reduce the comfort and working efficiency of the operators, thus lowering their health and safety and the quality of operation. This paper investigates the fastening operation on the assembly line of a major aerospace company for quantifying hand-arm vibrations with the objective of developing a dynamic model of the hand-arm system. The model will be used to ascertain the effect of the various risk factors on the quality of the operation. Experiment Setup A system of three tri-axial accelerometers is used to collect vibrations entering the hand-arm system and their positioning follows the ISO-5349 standard. Reaction force during the operation is measured using a force sensor. The posture of the hand-arm system is measured using two goniometers and one torsiometer. The pilot study conducted has two subjects and one pistol-grip power tool. The experiment setup and positions of various sensors is depicted in Figure 1. "The geological features of a rock mass have a direct influence on its blasting characteristics. It has been observed that perimeter control techniques provide excellent results in massive crystalline formations but may give poor results in weak and or highly jointed formations.A field study was conducted with the objective of understanding the role played by the geological features of a rock mass in producing and controlling blast damage. The field work involved the assessment of blast damage at several operating mines and the blasting of drift rounds in a geologically dominant rock mass.The effect of rock strength, rock quality designation (RQD), joint parameters and hydrogeological conditions on blast damage is described below. The influence of number and thickness of weak layers on blast damage is also discussed below on the basis of quantitative data. In addition, critical particle velocity ranges for damage to different rock types have also been outlined in this paper."

Most of us are aware of the ever increasing use of underground space. At the Advisory Conference on tunneling in Washington, D. C. in June of 1970, the demand for construction oriented tunneling during the 1970s was estimated at some 21,000 Km of length with an excavation volume of 675 million cubic meters. Of this total, 11 million cubic meters were forecast for underground parking. Though this is a small portion of the total, it is significant to note it represents a 280% increase over the previous decade. Other areas of unusual increase were railroad tunnels, 150%, and rapid transit tunnels, 160% (1). Faced with this increasing demand, the need for improved excavating efficiency is obvious. Great strides have been made. In Japan, for example, several new long tunnels have been driven parallel to old existing ones at costs as much as 50; under those of the original tunnels (1). This is an impressive achievement. I am certain, however, that we would all agree that even greater improvement is required. Great emphasis is being placed upon sophisticated systems which include among others, mechanical borers, thermal fracturing, and various methods of rock weakening and softening. However, in hard rock excavation the fact remains that the drill-blast method continues to be the most widely used system. Undoubtedly it will continue to be one of the most important techniques in the forseeable future.

The conventional visualisation method of remote equipment is through the installation of one or more cameras on the machine, and sending a live feed to the operator’s flat display. However, the performance of the teleoperation can be enhanced using better visualisation through virtual reality (VR). This paper presents the process of the design and manufacturing of a robotic platform that will be used in the next phase of the project for a VR-assisted teleoperated excavator. The robot consists of a loading boom and arm arrangement installed on the undercarriage of a CAT300-9D. All hydraulic cylinders are replaced with electric actuators, and crawling motors are substituted by electric motors. The pieces of the boom and the arm, as well as the bucket were designed in Autodesk Inventor, and manufactured from aluminium sheets using a desktop and CNC machine. Parts are joined by pins and welding as needed. An Arduino-based control system is developed for the robot, and motor controllers are used to convert the power commands from the microcontroller to the high-amperage actuators. The control system is capable of communicating with a wireless Play Station controller to operate remotely. The manufactured robotic excavator is planned to be utilised in multiple autonomy research projects.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the U. S. Bureau of Mines describing mining and milling methods and costs at cement-plant quarries throughout the United States, end deals directly with methods and costs at the quarry and mill of the North American Cement Corporation at Catskill, N. Y. The process of manufacturing cement is described only as far as the final grinding of the raw materials. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers, as well as to the industry as a Whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding; of the scone of the cost tabulations may ensue.

INSTRUMENTATION in the process industries can no longer be regarded as a convenience, but rather an absolute necessity. Although many chemical processes must already be conducted with instruments, every properly designed application of automatic process control will improve operation: 1) the product will be more uniform and of higher quality; 2) the manual labor saved will reduce cost; 3) uniformity of flow and uniform control of process will increase production; and 4) surges will be eliminated, making it possible to operate equipment near ultimate capacity at all times. Industrial instruments fall into two general classifications—those that measure and those that measure and control. The cement industry has been using instruments for a number of years, particularly in the burning process, primarily for indicatlng and recording. Automatic process control makes additional use of these instruments, and others, to control variables. Assisted by the instrument manufacturers, engineers at Ideal Cement Co. achieved considerable progress in determining how well the usual recording instruments could be made to control various phases of cement-making. The results of these experiments were used to make the new plant at Houston as wholly automatic as possible. The original Houston plant, built in 1937 by Gulf Portland Cement Co., consisted of only one 8 x 220-ft kiln and the necessary grinding mills and accessory equipment and had a capacity of 900 bbl per day (300,000 bbl annually). Ideal Cement Co. purchased this plant in 1940 and almost immediately started plans to increase its production. In 1941 a 9 x 220-ft kiln was installed and grinding and storage capacity were increased. The growing demand for cement in the Houston area necessitated a third kiln (9 ft 6 in. x 250 ft) in 1947. This brought the plant up to its present capacity of about 1.3 million bbl per year. Calcium silicates in cement are produced in a burning operation at high temperatures from raw mix of argillaceous and calcareous materials that have been crushed, mixed, and ground to a fine powder. The composition of this mixture must be kept consistent within narrow limits. Raw mixing and grinding may be done either wet or dry, but in both instances the materials must be correctly proportioned, finely ground, and thoroughly intermixed before entering the kiln. The objective of this research is to develop a method for measuring the tensile strength at the interface between minerals in rock. These measurements reflect the strength of the attractive forces operating at crystalline interfaces in rock. Since these forces act in opposition to the forces set up in various rock fragmentation processes, measuring their strength may help in designing more efficient methods of rock fragmentation. The method developed for measuring the strength of intergranular adhesion in rock involves separating a bicrystal from the rock and determining the tensile strength at its solid-solid interface. This technique has been successfully applied to the study of quartz-feldspar interfaces separated from massive pegmatites, graphic granite, and the Rockville granite, yielding average tensile strengths of 5.86, 8.62, and 10.65 meganewtons per meter squared (MN/m2) (850, 1,250, and 1,524 psi, respectively). The data this technique provides indicate that the members of these bicrystals are strongly adherent. Examirtation of bicrystals broken at the crystalline interfaces indicates that the bonds responsible for this adhesion operate over only a portion of the interfacial area. This work conclusively demonstrates that tensile strength tests can be conducted on small selected areas; for example, grain boundaries in rock. The small-scale zones of strength or weakness determined in this way can be related to the overall strength of the rock.

Two analytical solutions for estimating the ovaling deformation and forces in circular tunnels are widely used in engineering practice, due to soil-structure interaction under seismic loading. This paper discusses the discrepancy between the two analytical and finite difference methods. A comparison of the two analytical methods shows that the calculated forces and displacements are identical for the condition of full-slip between the tunnel lining and ground. However, the calculated lining thrusts differ by an order of magnitude when considering no-slip between the tunnel lining and the ground. The analytical solutions are compared to numerical analyses of the no-slip condition using the finite difference method to validate which of the two methods provide the correct method. To achieve the goal, numerical modelling, field data of the Kuhin railway tunnel and Manjil earthquake characteristics are used. Numerical analysis results agree with one of the analytical solutions that provides a higher estimate of the thrust on the tunnel lining, thus highlighting the limitation of the other analytical solution.

Small-mine and contractor Fatal Incidence Rates have been a problem for over 20 years in the coal industry, and the rates persist as unacceptably high. This paper briefly retraces historical information and data on the continuing problem and recounts the many unsuccessful efforts and initiatives to address the problems effectively. Next the results of a review of international literature on addressing the problems are presented. After focusing on a method to pinpoint the trouble spots more specifically through a nested data analysis, suggestions are provided on how the problem may potentially be addressed more systematically and effectively in the U.S.

This summary of international mineral exploration activities for the year 2005 draws upon available information from literature, industry and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) specialists. It provides data on exploration budgets by global region and mineral commodity and identifies significant mineral discoveries and exploration target areas. It also discusses government programs affecting the mineral exploration industry and presents analysis of the mineral industry based on these data. Two types of information are reported and analyzed in this annual review of international exploration for the year 2005. They include budgetary statistics provided by Metals Economics Group (MEG) and information on regional and site-specific exploration activities in 2005 compiled by the USGS.

"Free gold particles occur in many base metal and precious metal mines throughout the world. Occasionally mine operators are unaware of the presence of free gold particles in their ores because they have not seen free gold hand specimens or at the working face of the mine.Due to the high density and malleability of gold, large circulating loads of free gold particles can build up over time in grinding circuits. This gold is often deposited in unintended traps throughout the mineral processing system.These unidentified free gold deposits represent a serious security risk as well as inaccessible inventory of gold. Deposits of free gold particles often remain undetected by mine management until they are accidentally discovered while repairing mill equipment. The trapping and subsequent release of gold particles can frustrate attempts to calculate accurate metallurgical balances.Nuclear tracers have been used to determine the free gold recovery efficiency of gravity recovery equipment, drills, and sampling equipment (Clarkson, 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and Walsh, 1986, 1992). In 1995, the author used radiotracers to locate and eliminate gold traps at La Mine Doyon (Clarkson, 1997). In 1998 and 2001, the author also salted mineral processing circuits at Royal Oak's Pamour Mine in Timmins (Clarkson, 1999) and at Gold Corp’s Red Lake Mine in Ontario with radioactive gold particles.The gamma and X-ray radiation from gold's nuclear isotope (Au198) were detected through steel, in pipes, and in moving equipment with scintillometers. The radiotracers proved to be a safe, rapid and accurate method of identifying gold traps, improving security, determining the recovery efficiency of Knelson gold concentrators and estimating retention times of gold particles in various processes."

In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

Introduction The South African Witwatersrand is the world's largest gold-bearing province and gold producing district. But the production capacity of the very big mines (Vaal Reef, Driefontein Cons., Western Holdings, Western Deep Levels, and others) is not as large as that of the Soviet Union's Muruntau gold mine. The Muruntau gold-bearing ore body was discovered in 1956-57, and has been in operation since that time. In the early 1970s, this mine produced 70 to 80 t/a (2.3 to 2.6 million oz per year) of gold. Within the last few years it has become the world's largest producing gold mine. Russian authors do not publish ore reserve or rate of production data. But it is very likely that the Muruntau mining complex, which involves several ore bodies, is currently producing about 143 t/a (4.6 million oz per year) of gold. Safety and health professionals from all sectors of industry recognize that training is a critical element of an effective safety and health program. A major concern in the mining industry is how to train both an aging workforce and the expected influx of new miners and mine managers as older workers retire. Thus, a review of some of the basic principles of adult learning may be helpful to mine trainers. This paper discusses the principles of adult learning based on research in education and psychology. It stresses the importance of taking a systems approach to training, focusing on the relationship between the environment and technology, and understanding how workers interact with both. The authors argue that the principles of adult learning and a systems approach are fundamental to the delivery of effective training in the mining industry. Examples of training programs developed by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are presented within two broad performance domains: routine and nonroutine skills. Basics of curriculum development are also briefly presented to provide the mine trainer with a template for program development.

San Juan es una de las principales provincias exportadoras de minerales en Argentina, cuya actividad minera le proporciona mayores recursos. Sin embargo, sus plantas de fabricación (molienda, trituración) producen polvos en el exterior que contaminan el medio ambiente. Por ello, los productores incorporaron nuevas tecnologías limpias que no afecten ni el desarrollo de la producción, ni el medio ambiente. En este sentido, el presente trabajo señala las aplicaciones que el Instituto de Investigaciones Mineras de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNSJ ha diseñado a nivel laboratorio, a través de un recuperador electrostático de polvo, el cual responde a las necesidades de los productores y cumple con el objetivo de vinculación y transferencia con el medio productivo. Asimismo, se describe el diseño de un método de recuperación de polvos y el filtro recuperador del mismo, reduciendo el nivel de polvo a un 90% y logrando un precio de venta en el mercado.
