Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. The Weibull distribution has three parameters that vary to fit the subsidence profile so well that the profile function derived from it provides a high degree of accuracy in subeidence prediction. MANY methods for the determination of gold or silver, or both, in cyanide solutions have been published, which with care in manipulation, and modification in some cases, will give results that are satisfactory. It is possible to classify or group these methods as follows: 1. Evaporating the solution in a porcelain or agate-ware dish containing litharge,1 or in a "boat" made of lead foil. 2. Forming a lead sponge containing the precious metals by means of zinc shavings,2 zinc dust,3 or a piece of aluminum.4 3. Decomposing the cyanide solution with an acid and precipitating the precious metals by the use of one or a combination of some of the following: Copper sulphate,5 sodium sulphite,6 hydrogen sulphide,7 cement copper.8 4. Precipitating the silver by zinc dust held in a Hooch crucible and determination with a standard solution of sulphocyanate.9 5. Electrolysis.10 6. Colorimetry.11

Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. The summit of L_ihi submarine volcano changed dramatically after seismic activity beneath L_ihi during the month of August 1996. Bathymetric re-surveys of the L_ihi edifice using SeaBeam, Simrad and deep-towed Reson-Focus multibeam systems showed the presence of new north-south striking fissures, normal faults and a new pit crater located at the site of a former 300-meter high volcanic cone. Comparisons between the pre-1996 SeaBeam data and the new bathymetry show a net loss of about 100 million cubic meters of rock volume on the summit. This loss is localized at a new pit crater -- the 300-meter deep by 1,300-meter wide Pele's Pit. Submersible observations with Pisces V show the northern edge of Pele's Pit to be bounded by a normal fault located north of the site of the former Pele's Vents cone that has disappeared into the new pit crater. A new hydrothermal field, the Ikaika Vents, extending from a water depth of 1,311 meters to 1,287 meters has formed at the northeastern edge of the floor of Pele's Pit. Submersible observations of these new Ikaika Vents during September 1996 showed vigorous venting at the site with extensive white-colored bacterial mats hanging off the rock face above the vents. Follow-up mapping and sampling of the vent sites during August 1997 showed vent temperatures of up to 198°C, dense populations of vent shrimps around the vents and a centimeters-thick veneer of fine-grained polymetallic sulfide mineralization along the rock walls above individual vents. The mineralogy of the sulfides shows a barite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite composition.

A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reactions between reactive metals and molten-salt mixtures at high temperatures. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity titanium metal and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined. The reaction is surface-controlled, and the heat of activation is 8.29 kilocalories per mole TiC13. An active site or reaction nuclei is created by adsorbing a TiC13 molecule at the metal surface. Reaction of the second TiC13 species forms an activated complex that decomposes into three TiC12 molecules.

In this paper, the authors attempt to apply a simplified non-homogeneous void diffusion model (NHVDM) to predict surface subsidence for longwall mining in Illinois. A generalized error function subsidence profile is derived from this model. The model validation indicates that the NHVDM approach appears to fit the observed subsidence data as well or better than the error and the trigonometric functions, particularly around the trough edge areas.

Primary cementing is the process of placing cement in the annulus between the casing and the formations exposed to the wellbore. Portland cement was first used in 1903 in the Lopoc Field in California for well cementing. Since then, the major objective of primary cementing has always been to provide zonal isolation in oil, gas and water wells, i.e. to exclude fluid(s) in one zone from another zone in the well. To achieve this objective a hydraulic seal must be created between the casing and cement and between the cement and the formations, while at the same time preventing fluid channels in the cement sheath. This requirement makes primary cementing the most important operation performed on a well. Without complete isolation in the wellbore, the well may never reach its full producing potential. The industry knowledge on cements relies heavily on empirical data, but the chemistry, physics and structure of cement are not fully understood yet. The strength of concrete can be increased essentially by reducing its porosity through optimizing the size distribution of its components and filling the residual porosity of the hydrated cement phase with inorganic fillers. This approach has successfully utilized in different ways and several technologies for placing high performance oil and gas well cements have been developed over the last few decades. There are reasons to believe that the next source of improvement will lie in the fine-tuning of the hydrates themselves and of the different parameters that drive short (ionic?covalent bonding) and long (ionic correlation) interactions.

The Cigar Lake uranium deposit was discovered in 1981 at the south western end of Waterbury Lake, approximately 660 km north of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan (see Figure 1). It is the largest undeveloped high grade uranium deposit in the world. It contains proven and probable reserves of more than 226 million pounds U3O8 at an average grade of 20.7%. The world average grade is less than 1% U3O8. [ ] The ore body is located about 450 m below surface at the interface between sandstone above and basement rock below (see Figure 2). The sandstone is fractured rock and saturated with water. This makes water inflow a real hazard at the mine. In fact there have already been two significant mine inflow events. The first of these occurred in October 2006 and resulted in the flooding of the mine. The second occurred in August, 2008 during mine recovery activities.

"The roasting and gas handling circuits of the Barrick Gold’s new Roasting Facility at the Goldstrike Mine in Nevada, USA incorporate well proven technologies in a unique combination. During the design of the plant, every effort was made to utilize the best available technologies from the perspective of capital, environment and operating costs.Product from the up-stream dry grinding circuit requires roasting to maximize gold recovery. The roaster utilizes Freeport-McMoRan whole ore roasting technology with pure oxygen as the oxidizing gas. This process was chosen based on its proven application on Carlin-type “double refractory” ores. Double refractory is indicative of the gold being difficult to direct leach due to a combination of pyrite encapsulation and the carbonaceous preg-robbing of the ore.A very extensive gas cleaning train follows the roaster and comprises direct cooling, dust scrubbing, indirect cooling, wet electrostatic precipitation, mercury scrubbing, SO2 scrubbing, CO incineration and NO, reduction before venting to the atmosphere.The roasted calcine is quenched, neutralized and then thickened before leaching in the carbon-in-leach-circuit.INTRODUCTIONBarrick’s strategic development plan integrated the production of gold from Goldstrike’s carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1 996. Processes considered included autoclaving followed by a proprietary ammonium thiosulfate leaching process, fine grinding/autoclaving as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by then Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike’s carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated."

The purpose of this study is to develop a mathematical model to describe the oxidation of cyanide with SO2as proposed in the Inco process. This research employed a direct method for measuring the change in cyanide concentration with respect to time as effected by varying concentrations of SO2, copper and pH. Developing this model may be applicable in determining optimum conditions in a process well known and used in the mining industry. It was determined that the reaction is first-order with respect to cyanide, SO2and [Cu+2].The reaction order is 0.15, or zeroth order with respect to [H+] at pH range from 8.0 to 9.5.The activation energy, Ea, is 21.6 kJ/mol. The Effect of Using Different Comminution Procedures on the Flotation of Platinum Group Minerals The use of High Pressure Grinding Rollers (HPGR) has been widely reported to have major benefits in the treatment of minerals such as iron ore and diamonds. To date there have been few investigations into its use in the treatment of ores containing Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs). HPGRs are known to reduce energy consumption and wear costs and improve the throughput in the circuit. In the present investigation the effect of the comparative use of HPGR and conventional crushing in combination with either dry or wet rod milling on the flotation of PGMs was studied using batch flotation. Previous studies of a base metal sulfide ores had shown that either HPGR or conventional crushing followed by dry milling produced the highest grades and recoveries. However in the present study it was observed that a similar treatment produced the worst results and the highest grades and recoveries were obtained for the case of conventional crushing in combination with wet milling. The HPGR showed no advantages in terms of flotation performance and dry milling produced particularly poor flotation results. The results were investigated further using various surface characterisation techniques in order to determine the reason for the decrease in grades and recoveries of platinum when using dry milling and HPGR as opposed to the case for base metal sulfides. The feed and product samples were analysed using ToF-SIMS, XPS and MLA. The paper will propose reasons to explain the different flotation behaviour of the two ore types following the various comminution processes focusing on the surface characteristics of the ores, the particle size distribution and the pulp chemistry.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the emission control methods, including the capital investments and operating cost, necessary for further reducing lead levels in ambient air at the Glover, Herculaneum, and Buick smelter-refineries in Missouri and the East Helena, MT, smelter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed more stringent lead in ambient air standards than those currently in effect. This report presents theoretically achievable lead emission reductions and estimated capital and operating costs. Lead emission inventories theoretically can be reduced from 1985 levels by 2,421 lb/d at the three Missouri operations by containing and filtering fugitive emissions within structural enclosures and baghouses. The aggregated capital and operating costs in 1986 dollars using conventional environmental and workplace technologies are estimated to be $250,014,100 and $18,507,800, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.063/lb as refined lead. Additional regulatory costs attributable to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSKA), U.S. Department of Labor, workplace standards are included since proposed environmental controls may otherwise degrade workplace conditions. Continuous drossing is evaluated as an alternative to conventional OSHA controls. Substituting continuous drossing for conventional work- place technology results in an estimated aggregated capital and operating costs of $258,344,800 and $15,719,600, respectively. Estimated total incremental cost is $0.062/1b as refined lead. For comparison, the average open market price of refined lead during the first quarter of 1986 was $0.184/lb.

In a companion paper on current hedging practices in the mining industry (Armstrong et al, 2009) we showed that contrary to popular belief, mining groups are still using financial derivatives to hedge against foreign exchange risk and interest rate risk, and more recently against adverse changes in energy prices, notably the oil price. This paper presents a case study on a hypothetical gold mine to illustrate the impact that hedging policies could have on its profitability by reducing the downside risk due to adverse changes in the exchange rate and increases in fuel prices. The characteristics of the hypothetical mine have been set to reproduce those of a real gold deposit, the Kisladag mine that is currently being exploited by open pit methods in Turkey. This mine was selected because its feasibility study was available to the public. Geostatistical simulations are used to reproduce the inherent uncertainty on the recoverable reserves û stochastic simulations are used to generate the variability of the other three key sources of uncertainty: the gold price, the cost of energy and the exchange rate. A simple strategy based on straightforward vanilla options (puts and calls) was developed for hedging the last two risks, on the assumption that the company sells its production at the prevailing spot price.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard- recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

"At the Sarcheshmeh copper mine 40,000 t of ore per day with an average grade of 0.9 % Cu is ground to 70% passing 75 microns. Grinding is effected in 8 parallel lines of 8 x 5 m ball mills in a closed circuit with cyclones. The make-up balls are 80-mm forged alloy steel balls and the average ball consumption is 750 gh of ore ground. In order to optimize ball size distribution inside the mill, based on the previous investigation instead of using only 80 mm make-up balls a combination of 80 and 60 mm (75% to 25% by weight) ball charge was used in one of the mills. To evaluate the performance of three ball types namely forged alloy steel balls (A), ductile cast iron (C), high chromium cast iron (D) and also a combined (80 and 60 mm) charge of forged alloy steel balls (B), four identical parallel mills were charged accordingly. These four mills were sampled during a period of six months. The amount of material finer than 75 microns of cyclone overflows was selected as a criterion for the performance evaluation. It was observed that in a mill with the combined make-up balls the amount of fine produced was 4% higher than the other mills. The consumption of ball types A, C and D were 730, 710 and 534 g/t, respectively. The results of laboratory flotation tests showed that due to an improvement in the production of fines an increase of 1.4% in the overall copper recovery is obtainable. Due to the promising results, the new make-up ball regime was implemented in all mills in the plant.INTRODUCTIONThe Sarcheshmeh copper ore body which may rank as third or fourth largest in the world contains 1 billion tonnes averaging 0.90 % copper and 0.03 % molybdenum. It is located southeast of Iran and has been processing 40,000 t/d of ore since 1982. The mine produces 100,000 tonnes of copper and 2,200 tonnes of molybednite concentrate per year. After three stages of crushing, the ore with a F80 of 12.7 mm is fed to 8 parallel ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones to produce a product 70% finer than 75 microns. The concentrate of the first stage of flotation is reground and the tailing constitutes the main component of the plant final tailings. A concentrate with an average grade of 31% Cu is obtained after cleaning and re-cleaning stages. Total recovery of the plant varies between 83 and 87 % depending on the operating conditions and ore type."

Introduction The Sydney coal-field extends for a distance of thirty miles along the northeastern coast of Cape Breton island. At a central focal point at the tip of the south arm of Sydney harbour, seven miles or so in from the Atlantic ocean, is the city of Sydney, with Port Morien to the southeast and Sydney Mines to the north . Mining centres along the ocean coast between these points include Birchgrove, Reserve, Glace Bay, and Waterford. The field is divided into three districts or 'basins', namely, Morien basin to the south, Glace Bay in the centre, and the Lingan-Sydney Mines basin to the northeast. The eastern and western portions of the latter are known as the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basins, respectively. Six distinct coal seams are described as existing in the Morien basin, nine in the Glace Bay basin, and six in both the Lingan and the Sydney Mines basin. Although known by different names in the several basins, a definite continuity of the seams has been established.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton's model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn't made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton's model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn't an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. "The treatment of water is required at many mining operations to remove metals and prevent the discharge of contaminated water to the environment. In other cases, water treatment is used to provide better quality water for recycle to the processing plant, or to process bleed streams in hydrometallurgical operations in order to prevent deterioration in metallurgical performance or process equipment. BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has developed and commercialized the BioSulphide® Process which can provide an alternative for these treatment needs and which can also be used for profitable metal recovery, particularly in cases where conventional metal winning techniques are not economical. The BioSulphide® Process is a high rate anaerobic biotechnology for on-site production of H2S from sulphur species, although for smaller flows and metal loadings, the use of chemical sulphide reagent might be more cost effective. Both new projects and existing commercial operations, used for removal and/or recovery of copper, nickel, and zinc, and which range in sulphide generating capacity from 50 kg/day to 3.7 tonnes/day, are discussed. Particular focus is placed on the results of operations at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec where dissolved nickel is removed from contaminated water at a high efficiency through the precipitation of nickel sulphide. Plant effluent is discharged directly to the receiving environment and the high-grade nickel sulphide product is combined with the nickel flotation concentrate produced at the mine. The plant at Raglan will replace the existing conventional water treatment plant and will eliminate the need for on-site storage of treatment plant sludge.INTRODUCTIONThe BioSulphide® Process, which produces low cost H2S for use in selective metal precipitation, offers a low capital cost alternative which can operate efficiently and cost-effectively within a wide range of flows and solution grades. Since the technology can be used to recover metals from solutions with low flows and metal grades, the technology is also applicable to environmental applications for water treatment, with the sale of recovered metals providing an offset to treatment costs. For environmental control, the technology has a distinct advantage in being able to meet strict effluent discharge criteria due to the very low solubility of metal sulphides. To date, BioteQ Environmental Technologies has designed and constructed three plants for metal sulphide precipitation, with another three projects in the advanced development stage."
