The Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Illinois Mine Subsidence Insurance Fund, is monitoring the response of two foundations to ground movements induced by subsidence from high extraction mining in southern Illinois. The objectives of the monitoring program are to study the inter- action between the ground surface and a foundation during a subsidence event and to determine the capability of the tiltmeter to detect and monitor subsidence movements. Tiltmeter data were obtained on two foundations constructed near Sesser, IL. One of the 30-by 40- ft foundations was constructed with a typical poured concrete footing, the other with a rein- forced-concrete footing poured on top of pol yethylene sheeting placed over a compacted layer of sand. Soil-filled bins were placed on the perimeters of both foundations to simulate superstructure loads. Monitoring pins and tiltplates were installed on the corners and midpoints of the footing. Additional survey points were established on the five-acre site to track the mining advance. This paper describes the monitoring instrumentation and techniques as they relate to the mining and site conditions. The capability of a tilt- meter to detect and follow the tilt of the foundations is demonstrated.

But only after repeatedly encountering this fact in befit open-hearth and air-furnace, as well as cupola metal, was I led to regard variation in the total carbon as the principal cause of disturbance; and I resolved to determine the total carbon as well as the sill on ill every heat, and by a carefully prepared test piece to gauge the approximate degree of chill. Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

Managing a highwall failure risk in an open pit mine by controlling and mitigating the impact of vibrations produced by blasting operations is key to achieving safe and cost-effective operations. The impetus behind this study was the risk of multiple bench failures in an open pit mine that was detected by Slope Stability Radar (SSR) following blasting at the foot of a highwall. The unstable high wall was over 140 meters(459.3 ft)high and 200 meters(656.2 ft)wide. The quantity of associated material was estimated at 3,000,000 metric tons(3,306,934 US tons). The overall slope angle was 44 degrees. In order to continue mining without causing the highwall to fail, this study was initiated as part of a risk management plan to mitigate this major risk by identifying mitigation measures related to blasting operations and assessing the response of the rock mass to each blast. Identifying blasting mitigation measures consisted of optimizing blasting parameters to avoid failure of the highwall. First, a signature hole operation was carried out to obtain seismic records that were georeferenced and associated with known single charges. The method used made it possible to determine the propagation velocity of the P-waves associated with the various lithologies studied and to calculate, from the geomechanical properties of the rock masses, the maximum peak particle velocities to be respected. Subsequently, the targeted area of operation was modelled with the I-Blast software in order to optimize the firing sequences to be used according to the different lithologies present. The model also made it possible to optimally predict the particle velocities associated with each blast and ensure compliance with the previously determined peak particle velocity limits. The assessment of the rock mass’s response using SSR consisted of defining alarm thresholds and an intervention plan for various possible alarms as well as quantifying the damage to the highwall from blasting. Controlling the impact of blast vibrations on the highwall’s stability was successful, as the mitigation measures used during mining did not accelerate the highwall’s movement. No upward trend in the stabilization time of the rock mass was observed by the SSR after each blast. Post-blast geotechnical inspections and analysis of post-blast deformations in the highwall also did not reveal significant damage to the highwall as a direct consequence of the blasting.

This paper is based on a project conducted at Khomanani 2 shaft, Anglo American Platinum Limited. The main objective was to find an alternative support element in stopes to address the falls of ground (FOG) problem experienced at this shaft. Literature review was the major method used in the investigations. Resin bolts or any 1.5 m in-stope roofbolts were considered. The shaft was making use of 0.9 m long friction bolts, and these could not prevent the FOG experienced. Observations indicated that the FOG resulted in fall-out thicknesses averaging to 1.1 m, which is greater than the supported length of the friction bolts. The implementation of 1.5 m long bolts was recommended as a result of the project. These bolts will be able to address the fall-out thickness and provide sufficient support resistance to mitigate FOG. The chosen support element will result in a relatively small increase in support costs.

The West Coast contains one of the world's giant placer gold deposits with production since the 1860s totalling some six million ounces (present day value NZ$ 3.6 billion). The deposits have been worked variously by hand, ground sluicing, hydraulicking and/or elevating, blocking out, deep leading and bucketline dredging. Since the sharp gold price rise of 1979 - 1980 gold production has increased steadily (in spite of the closure of the Kaniere dredge) to some 30 000 ounces (933 kg) in 1984. Production is primarily from some 100 medium scale mining, operations treating 50 - 200 000 m3 of auriferous late Pleistocene fluvial gravels year. In spite of their economic value the deposits remain only poorly investigated and many fundamental questions relating to the origin and formation of the deposits remain unanswered. This paper attempts to describe the geology of the deposits and outline a genetic model for their formation, and then discusses some of the economic aspects and current limitations and opportunities of the growing alluvial gold mining industry of the region.

The purpose of the given research was to investigate the possibility of high-carbon ferrochromium refining to remove harmful impurities as a result of metal treatment by slag mixtures on the basis of the CaO-MgO-SiO2system. The final conclusions were drawn from experimental results. It was shown that the treatment of high-carbon ferrochromium by SiO2-MgO-CaO slag mixtures with additions of chromium sinter or iron-ore concentrate removes carbon, sulphur and phosphorus from the metal. A mechanism of phosphorus removal from a melt to a gas phase is proposed.

South African is a repository of significant deposits of a variety of minerals. The Citigroup confirms this assertion with an estimate of in-situ valuation of US$2.5 Trillion. The mining sector plays an important role in the South African economy. In addition to the mineral resource base South Africa has other comparative advantages. Firstly, South Africa retains major mining companies that participate globally, including Anglo American, Goldfields and De Beers. Their global involvement offers much to the local mining sector and the broader economy. Secondly, government established research councils. The Council for Geoscience (CGS) was established to manage the Geological Survey of South Africa, including the reduction of geo-scientific investment risk. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) promotes industrial development, including mining technology development. Mintek undertakes mineral research from mineral examination of ores, to extraction and refining technologies and manufacture of end products. Thirdly, South African universities teach and conduct research along the mineral value chain. They have increased their minerals graduates? capacity, thus advancing knowledge and skills. Knowledge and technical progress are behind productivity growth and emergence of competitive advantage. The research and development (R&D) capabilities of industry, science councils and universities, working in unison, will enhance the competitiveness of the South African mining industry. The National System of Innovation (NSI) requires multi-disciplinary, collaborative research. Key R&D elements, including skills and expertise, funding and facilities, must be available to implement a long-term national strategy or programme. Improved international collaboration and partnerships between government, academia and industry driven human resource development (HRD), ultimately develop the critical mass for inter-generational skills requirements. This trend requires an expansion of research collaboration programmes. Decisions involving investments and collaborative actions pertaining to R&D in the sector necessitate an analysis of the South African mineral value chain R&D capability. This paper analyses the evolution of R&D capability from exploration to refining, tertiary education, science councils and industry. The political economy of the evolution of this capability is analyzed in relation to the central role that the South African government plays in creating an appropriate supporting environment and related initiatives to enhance R&D and innovation. ABSTRACT: The paper describes the characterisation studies of Tectonised Clay Shales at laboratory and in situ scale. The interest relates to tunnelling under squeezing and swelling conditions, in Italy, along the Apennines. The results of monitoring during full face excavation are presented in conjunction with numerical modelling. RESUME: Cet article présente la caractérisation, à l'échelle du laboratoire et in situ, des Argiles Chaotiques. L'attention est portée sur le creusement, dans ces milieux gonflants, des tunnels, dans les zones montagneuses des Appennini, en Italie. Enfin, on présentera les résultats de la modélisation numérique et la comparaison de ces derniers avec les mesures effectuées in situ. KURZFASSUNG: Die Arbeit beschreibt die Charakterisierungsstudien von tektonisierten Schiefertonen, sowohl im Labor als auch vor Ort. Rock property tests were performed on NX-size diamond drill core from the roof, floor, and coal from the longwall mining section of Federal No. 2 mine, West Virginia. The purpose of these tests was to determine the engineering properties of the various strata as part of a ground control study of the longwall operation. The following tests were performed: 1. It was with humility that I accepted the invitation of the Board of Directors of our Institute to deliver the Twentieth Howe Memorial Lecture. Many previous lecturers could speak from personal experience of the great work done by Professor Howe. It was not my privilege to be one of his students but, indirectly, I came under the influence of his work many years ago. My mentor in Metallurgy at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Prof. Fred Crab tree, was an ardent admirer of Professor Howe and his work. Professor Crabtree taught me early to appreciate Professor Howe's love of truth and keen desire to find a scientific reason for every metallurgical phenomenon. In this early search, Professor Howe encountered many unexplainable facts. Nevertheless, in the classic text, "The Metallurgy of Steel," published in 1891, he indicated that he believed Research could light the way. Under the heading of "The Treachery of Steel" he said: "In the early use of Bessemer and Open Hearth Steel, many then unexplained and hence mysterious failures occurred. With our present knowledge, an easy explanation of most of them would probably have been seen. But even today certain unexplained and apparently inexpli- cable failures occur in steel; inexplicable in spite of full and intelligent investigation." Then Professor Howe continued to talk about "the trustworthiness of steel" in the following manner: First, the steel-maker has learned by experience. He knows today far better the effects of a high percentage of carbon or of phosphorus; of cracks, pipes and blow-holes; of segregation and imperfect mixing; of over-heating; of finishing too hot or too cold. Knowing, he guards against them more effectually, and keeps at home much steel that he would formerly have sent into the market. Those who would not, or could not learn and do, have been driven out of the business; the conditions necessary for producing good sound steel by the acid Bessemer and the acid Open Hearth processes have been mastered. By and by, the basic process came along with new conditions, new liabilities to unsoundness, a great hue and cry about mysterious fractures followed, and Lloyd's register provisionally forbade the use of basic steel. Much basic steel was irregular and brittle throughout; too much carbon, too much phosphorus, too cold teemings—imperfect mixing. Still there was little doubt that, with further experience, these difficulties of the basic process would be mastered as those of the acid process had been. This shows that Professor Howe could not take anything for granted. Believing that careful research would find the answer to all mysterious phenomena, he was several generations ahead of the practical acceptance and adoption of this principle.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

Since zinc was first deposited at Risdon in February, 1917, provision of the most economical cathode assembly has been a subject of extensive research, the major problems being corrosion and efficient use of power.From the corrosion viewpoint, a perfect cathode is one in which the life of the headbar and the deposition sheet are the same. However, corrosion usually concentrates in a narrow zone across the face- of the sheet, resulting in breakages which, before the advent of argon arc welding, meant a loss of a 'complete assembly.Attempts to extend sheet life included use of thicker sheets, multitudinous protective coatings applied with varying degrees of success, re-rolling, and for a time, aluminium consumption was reduced when broken sheets found re-use as protecting strips. This latter economy became impracticable when electrode spacing was reduced for greater efficiency in power utilization.As an integral part of the electrode, the headbar was modified accordingly. Copper headbars, although more corrosion resistant, were replaced by aluminium due to a possibility of dissolved, copper promoting deterioration.Thicker electrodes and regulated spacing reduced internal shorting, whilst provision of knife-edge type supports on both contact and insulator ends of headbars aided in electrode centralising and continuous electrical conduction.After much experimeIitation, an assembly has been evolved which, with the aid of argon arc welding and tbe use of minimum additional aluminium, permits comparable headbar and sheet lives, combined with good electrical conduction throughout the life of the cathode.INTRODUCTION Over 300 tons of zinc are produced daily at Risdon from a purified zinc sulphate solution by electrolysis, the zinc being deposited upon all-aluminium (except for copper contact) cathodes. It is stripped in 72-hour cycles from the cathodes, melted and cast into the customary rectangular slabs.

The aim of this paper is the construction of models of systems with ionic and ionic-covalent bonds (molten salts) using experimental diffraction data and the calculation of their structure and thermodynamic and transport properties. Modelling was performed using algorithm BELION, in which the non-coulomb part of interaction potential between ions in the model was determined by the method of iterative simulation which targeted agreement between calculated and experimental partial pair correlation functions (PPCFs). The ionic charges in salts, which can be fractional, were determined by minimization of internal energy. In this paper, the algorithm BELION is applied for chlorides of alkaline-earth metals. Pair potentials, PPCFs, atomization energies, self-diffusion coefficients and electric conductivity are calculated. The charge of alkaline-earth metals was in the range of 2.0-2.1, slightly increasing from Mg to Ba. Partial pair correlation functions and atomization energies of models agree well with experimental data for MgCl2, SrCl2and BaCl2. Automated multi-sensor core loggers (MSCL) measure petrophysical properties of diamond drill cores, including gamma density, P-wave velocity, electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility. A Geotek MSCL system has been used to record petrophysical data on archival drill core from Cadia East Au-Cu porphyry deposit, New South Wales, Australia, for correlation with metallurgical parameters. P-wave modulus, calculated from density and P-wave velocity, exhibits a correlation with small-scale crushability (A*b) test results, and hence offers a means for æcontinuousÆ characterisation of ore crushability at Cadia East. Magnetic susceptibility has proved to be a good indicator of alteration styles, and is a possible indicator of crushability.

The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

TRANSVERSE rupture tests have been commonly used in mechanical investigations of brittle materials. The specimens are simple, easy to prepare, and loading presents no difficulty. Owing to the complexity of stress distribution in bending1 one can determine stresses rigorously only for the elastic range. The bend-test results, however, are at times converted into tensile-strength data, determined as maximum fiber stress. The assumption is made that for small plastic deformations the linear stress-strain relation applies. This problem was experimentally investigated by Bach3 who tested cast iron in bending and in tension and found that the maximum fiber strength obtained in bending exceeded the experimental tensile strength by a factor depending on the geometry of the tested piece. The factor varied from 1.57 for a rectangular cross section to 2.12 for a circular cross section of the tested beam. Since this work was carried out 60 years ago, the cast iron used could be expected to have been highly brittle, thus the extent of plastic deformation prior to fracture very small. We have therefore carried out a number of tests on magnesium-modified cast iron with an average elongation of -5 pct. It was hoped that the data obtained from the tests would serve as a guideline for comparing data obtained in tension and bending for brittle materials. Mechanical properties were measured at room temperature on an Instron tensile machine at a crosshead speed of 0.05 in. per min. The three-point bend test employed cylindrical bars 0.20 in. in diameter with a 1.0-in. span. For the tensile test, cylindrical tensile specimens with a gage length of 0.85 in. and a diameter of 0.160 in. were used. Results are summarized in Table I. This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation into the removal of gate road chain pillars in conjunction with longwall retreat mining. The research objective was to determine, through evaluations of the loads imposed on the gate road pillars and supplemental support elements in the entries, how the pillars, supplemental support, and entries were affected by the longwall abutment pressure. To achieve this goal, vibrating wire stressmeters and hydraulic flatjack pressure cells were installed in the support elements to monitor stress change caused by abutment pressure as a function of longwall face advance. The findings documented in this report are the result of information collected from instrumentation and observation at the mine. Pillar and support loading measurements and stability observations revealed that the roof and the sup- port elements remained stable during panel retreat, while the face progressed at a normal rate of advance. The ability to safely and efficiently mine chain pillars during panel retreat increases resource recovery and can provide several other benefits described in this report.
