The behaviour of iron ore granules in the feeding process of sintering is significantly influenced by the material properties of the granulated mix. Therefore, the measurement of key material properties of the iron ore granulated mix is indispensable prior to the simulation of the sintering process based on the discrete element method (DEM). In this paper, three key property parameters of the iron ore granulated mix, apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient, were measured in laboratory-scale experiments. For different sintering processes, the moisture content of the granulated mix normally varies according to the specific requirements for granule size distribution and operating conditions. Therefore, understanding the effect of moisture content on the property parameters of iron ore granules is very helpful in accurately determining the property parameters for DEM simulation work. In this paper, six groups of iron ore granule samples with six levels of moisture contents were prepared through granulation and the trends in apparent density, elastic modulus and rolling friction coefficient with the increase of moisture content were plotted and analysed based on the measurement results. The results show that as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent, the apparent density decreases from about 3000 to 2800 kg/m3. With moisture increasing within the same range, the elastic modulus first decreases from over 200 MPa to below 100 MPa and then reaches a relative constant value of about 40 MPa at higher moisture contents. Rolling friction coefficients are measured using two methods with both indicating a similar trend, with the rolling friction coefficient first decreasing and then rising as moisture increases from 6.9 per cent to 9.1 per cent. A new minerals engineering education programme is being developed in Australia which aims to provide tertiary institutions with a package of educationally sound, high quality courses for undergraduates, postgraduates and professionals. The programme is jointly funded by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) and the Department of Education Training and Youth Affairs (DETYA) and brings together academics from a number of leading Australian universities, each developing modules in their particular area of expertise. The University of Queensland (UQ) and the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre(JKMRC) are jointly responsible for modules in several areas including comminution, physical separation and circuit design and optimization. Other modules are being developed by the University of South Australia (with the Sir Ian Wark Centre), Curtin University and Murdoch University. The major challenge of the programme is to provide a high standard of education that is accessible to students who may be located at several different institutions and some of whom maybe a long distance from the primary course leader. Rather than taking existing course material and putting it ‘on the web’, the programme aims to improve on past teaching practice through creative pedagogy and the development of interactive multimedia learning resources. Communications technology is used in an unobtrusive way, and the World Wide Web is used to create a flexible, user-friendly learning environment rather than to facilitate delivery of content. This paper describes the instructional design template currently being used and results of early implementation trials with groups of local and remote students.

It is a far cry from the small and uncertain mining efforts of 50 years ago to the splendidly equipped and solidly financed organiza- tions that now handle thousands of tons of ore per day. The old mining was largely speculative; the new is practically on a manu- facturing basis. In the old days of mining the aim was, chiefly, to find comparatively rich ore; modern practice looks more toward efficiency in mining and milling, so that vast tonnages of low-grade material may be worked at a profit. The old operators had faith and hoped for good returns; the new ascertain with a fair degree of precision what the available tonnage is, what the cost of mining and treating the ore will be, the time necessary to exhaust the deposit, the capital required, and the net profits to be made. The old mining was financed on a highly speculative basis, and the value of mining stock was largely controlled by the imaginations of the promoters and of the individual holders. In the new régime the financing of mines is often as conservative as the financing of manufactures or railroads, and the value of stock, quoted on the leading exchanges, is controlled by the carefully estimated profits in sight. Of course, with every legitimate industrial enterprise go certain business risks, and mining is not exempted from these. Then, too, valueless mining as well as valueless industrial stocks are sometimes offered for sale by the intentionally dishonest, or the ignorant. However, the prospective purchaser of a mine nowadays, if he is willing to pay for the services of reputable mining engineers, can obtain information on which to base an opinion as to the quality of his investment. The relatively recent development of cheap and efficient methods of mining and of ore dressing has given value to low-grade ore bodies that a few years ago were almost valueless. The iron mines of northern Minnesota have been fruitful in developing efficiency in mining methods, notably the open-cut methods in which steam shovels strip off the overburden and then load the ore directly into railroad trains for transport to the furnace. In 1907 open-cut mining was applied to the low-grade copper ores of Bingham, Utah, with splendid results, and since then it has won a most important place in the min- ing of large masses of low-grade ores in several other mining regions, especially at Santa Rita, N. Mex.

To the industrial geologist, as wen as to the general or historic geologist, the possession of a reliable key to the true order or sequence of the stratigraphy or position of the various upper rocky envelopes of the earth's crust, is, equally, a desideratum of the utmost importance. Of similar value to the two groups of students is the possession of facts which throw light upon the relationships which subsist between the puccessive rock formation of different countries, especially between countries lying close to each other, or within the same great geographical division.But there is necessarily a fundamental distinction which marks the respective limits of the field of observations of the industrial geologist, and the purely historic interest of the general geologist. The former has a more definite though less extensive scope. The scope of the latter is wide and indeterminate. In short, the observations of the industrial geologist are, 'from a commercial or economic point of view, of a more practical character, and are, therefore, intentionally restricted to the study of all geological questions which throw light upon the rocks which yield products of economic value and only include the study of the character and history of other rocks, in so far, as they afford aid to the more perfect comprehension of the best manner in which materials of economic value are likely to be sought, and the best means whereby these products may be secured for the material advantage of the community. The motive of the general geologist-in most cases-is a love of the study of some particular branch or province of the geological field, and the fascination of opening a new volume in nature's library, and the hope of extending the realm of knowledge, however slight, are often sufficient, as a motive, to enlist the energy and life's devotion of the true brethren of the hammer, irrespective of considerations regarding the commercial utility of the pursuit.

The silver deposits of Rockvale near Armidale, N.S.W., occur in fissure veins in epi-Permian granite. The ore is fine grained, mineralogically complex, and contains twenty-seven different minerals including eleven silver minerals. The ore is characterized by a unique multiple unmixing from a sphalerite solvent. The following minerals have exsolved from solid solution in sphalerite: pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, cubanite I, cubanite II (chalcopyrrhotite), valleriite, "brown" stannite, "olive" stannite, argentian tetrahedrite, pyrargyrite, and an unknown grey-white mineral. Several of these minerals derive from a second-stage unmixing, the immediate solvents of which are the products of earlier exsolutions.INTRODUCTIONSmall silver-rich base metal deposits occur at several localities near Armidale in the New England district of New South Wales. Chief among these are the Tulloch Mine and the Rockvale Mine at Rockvale, 27 miles SE. of Armidale, and the Tait's Gulley deposits some 15 miles NE. of Armidale.At Rockvale (Kenny, 1928), irregular lenses of lode material, principally quartz and calcite, occur along a zone of shearing in biotite granite and altered sediments. The orebodies had a maximum width of 6 ft but averaged 2 ft 6 in. The largest lens was 150 ft long and 50 ft high. The Rockvale deposits were worked for both arsenic and silver; 2,897 tons of arsenic were produced but no figures are available forsilver.Little is known of the Tait's Gulley deposits which occur in folded arenites containing small but rich veins of pyrargyrite with base metal sulphides.The sediments in these localities are possibly Silurian.

The CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines (MRMR Best Practice Guidelines) were prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) to update an earlier version that was accepted by CIM Council on November 23, 2003 (CIM, 2003). These 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines supersede and replace the November 23, 2003 version of the MRMR Guidelines. These 2019 MRMR Guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive and are not intended to provide detailed and exhaustive instructions for preparation of Mineral Resource and/or Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. Rather, they are intended as general guidance to assist professional geoscientists (or equivalent) and engineers (or equivalent) in preparing high quality estimates of MRMR that incorporate sound geoscientific, engineering, evaluation and design practices. They are based on well-established estimation and mine planning principles and are designed to provide general guidelines of best professional practices employed in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Although the 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines are intended for use by Canadian-based mining/exploration practitioners, many of the concepts and practices presented herein are in general agreement with current industry practices in jurisdictions with membership in the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). For this document, persons preparing MRMR estimates are called Practitioners. Preparation of MRMR estimates should be carried out by Practitioners who either hold the status of Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent), or who prepare the estimates under the supervision of a Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent). For the purposes of this document, all references to reporting describe such necessary reports and related documentation that are created as part of the normal-course work flow of preparing MRMR estimates for internal purposes. For clarity, all public disclosure of MRMR estimates made by, or on behalf of, an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time. At least one Qualified Person (QP) must take responsibility for each part of the estimation process when publicly disclosing the results of MRMR estimates. The intended audience for these 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines includes Practitioners at all levels of skill and experience, government agencies, academic institutions, and the public.

THIS IS a progress report on a study of the application of statistical practice to mine and mineral sampling undertaken by the Federal Bureau of Mines to provide sound theoretical and practical data for use of the mineral engineering professions. One of the problems in mine sampling is determining the reliability of the results. For certain types of sampling data (random data) the reliability of the results can be stated mathematically. For other types of data there is no known means of quantitatively expressing reliability. In applying measures of reliability to a set of random data, some knowledge or assumption of the characteristics of the particular data is necessary. In many fields these characteristics are well known. However, in mining, where the data are in assays, these characteristics are not well known.

Some major mineral deposits in northern Australia are found in preconsolidation slump disturbances in the sediments.In the retransported marine sediments at Tennant Creek, breccia beds and disturbances are found which have localized later mineral deposits such as the Peko copper orebody. These disturbances are thought to result from slumping, turbidity flow and various types of "semi-fluidized" subaqueous slides intermediate between slumps and turbidity currents.Movements are found to ~ause widespread disturbances in the sediments such that subsequent mineralization can spread through a large volume of rock giving rise to orebodies greater than those localized by tectonic structures.A similarity is noted between the sedimentary disturbances at Tennant. Creek and those at Mount Isa and Mary Kathleerr. It is suggested that disturbed beds which are host rocks to ore minerals in these mines may also be due to movements of the sediments before compaction.Certain characteristics of the slumped rocks can be recognized and limited generalizations can be made about the shape, extent and habit of these host rocks and the orebodies they contain.INTRODUCTIONSubmarine slumping and· turbidity current retransport are almost entirely responsible for some types of deep marine sediments.However, little attention has yet been drawn to slump deposits and associated disturbances bedded in the sediments as features localizing later mineralization.A study. has been made by the writer of the slump and associated phenomena of the ,Tennant Creek field where many mineralized bodies, including some gold and copper orebodies, occur as replacements of coarse fragmental slump...

An approach of geological mapping and descriptive criteria has been used to identify hydrothermal eruption breccias, named the Onemana Breccia. These in part mantle a gold bearing fossil hydrothermal system located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand. Whilst eruption breccias are documented from active and recent geothermal centres within the Taupo Volcanic Zone and in Northland their recognition at Onemana is the first confirmed discovery for this lithotype within ancient hydrothermal systems of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone. At Onemana the widespread occurrence of silicification, sinters, volcanic lake sediments, eruption breccias and advanced argillic alteration allows classic hot spring epithermal modelling. The geological setting, distribution, lithological characteristics, hydrothermal alteration and trace element geochemistry of the Onemana eruption breccias are described. These breccias are closely comparable with hydrothermal eruption deposits elsewhere, particularly those in active ore forming hydrothermal systems. Consideration is given specifically to the role of the Onemana Breccia in an exploration strategy for discovering epithermal gold-silver deposits.

Jointed micropiles were investigated to support bridge foundations where shallow rock was present. In this application, micropiles would have some amount of unsupported length, and would be subject to nominal lateral loads. Five lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles to demonstrate the impact of casing joints and rock socket embedment on lateral behavior. Load tests were simulated with FB-Multipier, a hybrid-finite element program for analysis of deep foundations, for proper design of the loading apparatus and instrumentation. The micropile sections were 2 m (6.56 ft) long, 273 mm (10.75 in) in diameter, 13 mm (0.5 in) thick walled, with a 50-mm (2-in) long threaded joint. Micropiles were made of one to three casing sections and were embedded 0.3, 0.6, 1.5, or 3.0 m (1, 2, 5, or 10 ft) into rock. In each test, two identical micropiles were pulled together using a simple frame until the weaker pile failed. All micropiles were instrumented with inclinometer casings while two contained strain gages at 0.76 m (2.5 ft) intervals. Load and displacement were measured at the pile heads. Tests showed the embedment of 0.6 m, 1.5 m, and 3.0 m (2 ft, 5 ft and 10 ft) sufficiently carried lateral loads over 180 kN (20 tons). The piles embedded 0.3 m (1 ft) were not able to maintain lateral load. In general, all micropiles tested to failure exhibited a brittle failure mode where there is small lateral deflection followed by a sudden failure at the casing joint. This was demonstrated in three of the load tests. In most cases, the micropiles were stiffer and stronger in the load tests than originally predicted numerically. The final test, where piles were not loaded to failure, verified that embedding vibrating wire rebar strain meters in the grout captured the bending moment profile of the micropile. The results showed the maximum moment in this case being carried directly across the threaded joint as predicted by the preliminary models. The results of these tests were used to calibrate the FB-Multipier numerical model. Using a load test that included bending strain measurements for a match, the soil properties were adjusted to produce reasonable matches for all of the load tests.

The Triassic Ipswich (SE. Queensland) coals are of bituminous rank. The more exact rank of individual samples was determined by measuring the reflectance of the vitrinite. While in general the rank of the coals increases with stratigraphic depth, minor reversals, probably related to igneous intrusions, occur.The Ipswich coals form a coherent group so far as petrographic type is concerned. All are comparatively rich in vitrite and clarite, cutinite being the common maceral of the exinite group. The mineral contents of all the coals are comparatively high, clay and quartz being most abundant. The coals appear to be of essentially autochthonous origin, and to have been formed under conditions of fairly rapid subsidence.While the use of the coals is at present restricted to combustion, most have pronounced coking properties, as would be predicted from their petrographic composition and reflectance. However, the high mineral content of the coals would be a limiting factor in their use for coke-making.INTRODUCTIONDuring the last ten years, the Division of Coal Research, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization has carried out an extensive investigation of Australian coals, providing a wide range of analyses of most of the important of them. Special attention has been given in recent years to Queensland coals.Most seams were sampled as a number of subsections, enabling the internal variations, as well as the overall properties, to be assessed. Thermodynamic properties of the solutions of hydrogen in metals and carbon in austenite were investigated and it is possible to predict the interstitial solubility in these systems over relatively wide ranges of temperature and solute activity. Monte Carlo methods were used to compute the arrangements of interstitial atoms on the tetrahedral sites in body centred cubic metals and the octahedral sites in face centred cubic metals. It was shown that the non-configurational entropies of solution of hydrogen in metals can be interpreted as being principally vibrational and on this basis the potential value of the isotopic solubility ratio theory in indicating the compositional variation of these non-configurational entropies was discussed. The need for future work along these lines is pointed out.

The Tertiary channel gravel deposits in northern California were selected Or detailed investigation by the U. S. Bureau of Mines as part of a national program to locate potential sources of gold that might be developed rapidly by large-scale mining operations. Five bureau research centers representing mining and metallurgy subsystems coordinated their efforts in a team operation to identify and investigate possible solutions to the problem area, that long have discouraged the resumption of large-scale mining in the deposits. This report summarizes the individual investigations, conclusions and recommendations conducted and prepared by all mining subsystems research groups after the completion of two years of field work at the deposits on San Juan Ridge in Nevada County, California. The studies indicate that modern mining technology can cope with the environmental problems that closed the immense hydraulic mines in 1,884. however, they also indicate that mining can be conducted with only marginal profits its unless the price of gold remains substantially above $70 per ounce or unless sufficient by-products can be recovered and sold to place the average value per cubic yard of gravel into a positive commercial range. The by-product potential of the Tertiary gravels remains to be investigated in more detail.

In High Pressure Die Casting a molten metal is injected through a thin gate into the cast cavity. High injection pressures and high gate velocities create atomization phenomena which can negatively affect the final quality of the cast. In order to control atomization process it is essential to understand the atomization patterns and the two-phase flowfield that exist at the gate exit. In the present work, 2D numerical simulations of the flow of molten Magnesium through a high aspect-ratio rectangular gate are performed using a water analogue for an open and closed cavity. The numerical simulations made use of VOF-type (Eulerian) physical models and Lagrangian models. Further, a sub-grid scale model was implemented that, in conjunction with VOF-type equations can efficiently predict the general atomization pattern without the need for high-resolution grids. The numerical results were compared to experimental data for validation.

An underground wet shotcrete trial was completed last year to determine the effectiveness of wet shotcrete as an alternative support mechanism to dry shotcrete in the kimberlite environment. The wet shotcrete was manufactured at the underground batch plants, transported to site using an agiecar and transferred to the shotcrete pump. The wet shotcrete is pumped to the nozzle where compressed air at 7 bar and an accelerator, Meyco SA 160, is added and enables the shotcrete to be placed successfully onto the tunnel wall. No tunnel guard was previously placed on the sidewall and hangingwall. Geotechnical testing indicates that the Grace fibre performed extremely well with the energy absorption tests at 7 kg/m3and 8kg/m3where both achieved over the mine requirement of 750joules. The Grace fibre and wet shotcrete mix also achieved a compressive strength in excess of 55 MPa, well above the 45 MPa requirement for Premier Mine. In South Africa there are two suitable wet shotcrete machines available for the mining industry, the Spreymec, manufactured by Tamrock and the Fermel/Meyco wet shotcrete machine. The Spreymec is a fully imported machine. The Fermel component is manufactured in South Africa and the Meyco shotcrete components are imported and supported by MBT (Master Builder Technologists) in South Africa. The Fermel/Meyco machine is assembled in South Africa. Premier Mine has allocated some R2, 100,000 towards the implementation of the wet shotcrete system. If implementation is successful there should be an internal rate of return gain of 76% with regard to this project.
