The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

"We will attempt to explain the basic workings of a modern seismograph and how the recorded data can be interpreted, not only for determining compliance to the regulations, but also in determining whether or not a seismograph record is accurate and valid. We will discuss some parameters that should be included in all seismographic recordings. We will give examples and use overhead slidesto show examples of both accurate and valid recordings, and tampered and inaccurate seismograph recordings. Much of the information presented will be basic in nature, and will reflect the opinions and personal experiences of the author. We ho'pe the listener will gain valuable information concerning the use and interpretation of seismographic data, as well as find interest and sometimes humor in the examples shown."

Blasting is often required in urbanized areas to allow for economical execution of construction, demolition, and mining. Several examples of operations that require blasting in built up areas include: rock blasting for foundation and utility excavations; surface and underground mining for mineral extraction; and explosives demolition. Although explosives demolition is an engineering discipline, not at all like rock blasting, it still uses explosives for the felling of structures that have outlived their usefulness. Through the use of modem technology and implementation of extra safety precautions, explosives are used safely in congested areas to make the performance of critical work economical and feasible. This paper discusses several precautions required when undertaking various types of rock blasting and explosives demolition in congested areas. It also presents the adverse effects that must be considered when blasting in congested areas. The effects identified include flyrock, vibration and airblast, fumes, and non-elastic (permanent) ground deformations/overbreak. Measures for mitigating and controlling these adverse effects to provide on-site and public safety are presented.

SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. O laminador a frio de inoxidáveis LB1 da Aperam South America é um laminador Sendzimir reversível que produz materiais alta exigência de qualidade superficial destinados a aplicações nobres como baixelas, mesas de fogão e portas de geladeira de alto luxo. O rendimento físico destes materiais passou a ser comprometido com a identificação de um defeito caracterizado por pequenas marcas, sem presença de óxidos ou inclusões que ocorrem ao longo da bobina, nas duas faces e na borda do lado de acionamento do laminador. Nos anos de 2009 a 2010 o defeito ocorria em 45% da produção de materiais finos de aços 430 processados no LB1. O defeito passou a ser codificado como S163 – Marca Mecânica Laminada. Para abordagem ao problema foi reunida equipe multifuncional com representantes das áreas de Operação, Manutenção, Metalurgia, Inspeção, dentre outras, utilizando a metodologia de Domínio Integrado do Processo (DIP). Após a análise das causas e a implantação dos planos de ação do projeto, houve o decréscimo acelerado da ocorrência do defeito. A causa fundamental do defeito foi caracterizada como o desalinhamento da desbobinadeira, provocando um efeito de empeno lateral no material durante a laminação do primeiro passe. Em Agosto de 2012 houve a primeira intervenção de correção na desbobinadeira do LB1, reduzindo os índices de ocorrência do defeito para 11% no mês de Setembro de 2012 e posteriormente reduzindo para percentuais inferiores a 1% a partir de Janeiro de 2013, superando as metas propostas para o projeto.

Traditionally, fuel oil or diesel was the collector of choice in coal flotation, but in recent years these materials have come under increased scrutiny because of concerns about the toxicity of some components. In response to these concerns, Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC has commercialized a patent pending coal collector (Talon® 9400 reagent) that is 100% derived from the pulping of trees. This study presents a comparison of yields and recoveries for different coal collectors, including the one derived from the pulping of trees.

Despite the media's use of the mining industry as a whipping boy over its perceived attitude towards the environment, the facts remain that the only legislated requirement in the SA Statute Books for any form of environmental impact-assessment prior to development is to be found in the Minerals Act in the form of an EMPR. Not only is our industry complying with this requirement, but moves are afoot to set up environmental management systems for existing operations in preparation for seeking accreditation under ISO 14001 when published towards the end of this year. On how broad a front are we advancing? ? Is the industry equipped to handle these challenges? ? Does it have the determination to overcome its problems? ? Do we realise that failure may mean the loss of markets overseas to competitors who can meet the international standards? ? Where are the shortcomings and when must our efforts be focussed?

A soldagem de peças de aço por arco submerso é um dos processos mais tradicionalmente usados na fabricação de componentes estruturais. A microestrutura do metal de solda é importante na definição das suas propriedades mecânicas, sendo a ferrita acicular um microconstituinte capaz de conferir à solda altos níveis de resistência mecânica e tenacidade. A nucleação da ferrita acicular depende da presença de inclusões não metálicas no metal de solda. No presente trabalho fez-se a caracterização microestrutural do metal de solda preparados com diferentes aportes térmicos. Lâminas finas foram observadas por microscopia eletrônica de transmissão, que possibilitou determinar alguns parâmetros morfológicos e químicos das partículas e a sua relação com a nucleação das ripas de ferrita acicular. Verificou-se que partículas irregulares com maior tamanho, mais ricas em titânio quando formadas com maior energia de soldagem, apresentam maior probabilidade de servirem como sítio preferencial para nucleação da ferrita acicular, se comparadas às partículas mais lisas e menores.

This paper briefly describes the principal known commercial and near commercial deposits of gold-bearing gravel end the principal placer mining operations of Idaho County, Idaho. It is one of a series of similar papers on western mining districts. The data used in writing this paper were gathered during the summer of 1937. Information concerning gold-bearing gravels was obtained from prospectors and operators, while operators supplied most of the data on mining operations. No attempt was made actually to test the gravels. The principal object of the examination was to indicate placer areas worthy of further investigation by prospective operators.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo adequar às características superficiais e mecânicas dos perfis ASTM A572 G60 para atender uma solicitação específica das indústrias de fabricação de torres de transmissão. A solicitação consiste em um ensaio do “achatamento”, que proporciona ao produto um tensionamento e uma deformação com um ângulo de aproximadamente 150º. A metodologia utilizada neste trabalho foi DMAIC (definir, medir, analisar, melhorar e controlar). Esta ferramenta é utilizada para melhoria de processos. Através desta ferramenta foi possível identificar as principais variáveis de processo de Aciaria e Laminação, o que possibilitou a determinação de um plano de ação direcionado às causas raízes. Com a implementação do plano de ação, obteve-se melhorias significativas na qualidade superficial e interna do material, como por exemplo a redução no nível inclusionário da classe 4 para a classe 3.

Geoscan is used for multi-elemental analysis of conveyed bulk materials in real time. It has been used for coal analysis since the 1990s, in the cement industry, and since 2003 for measuring mineral ore quality. Geoscan-M has proven performance and demonstrated paybacks of weeks or months, in iron ore, manganese, copper, zinc-lead and phosphate industries. Geoscan-M measures continuously through the full bed depth and is unaffected by belt speed, particle size, layering and dust levels. Increments of two minutes (typically one to five minutes) are accurately measured and provide the plant operators with tonnage weighted results of each element within seconds.A Geoscan installed after crushing is able to measure quality shortly after mining. The analysis results can be used to divert the increments based on composition, such as diverting waste for disposal and diverting marginal material to a stockpile for processing at a later date. The bulk sorting process allows different qualities to be placed into relevant stockpiles for subsequent blending. Material meeting product DSO (Direct Shipping Ore) quality can bypass a beneficiation circuit to prevent unnecessary treatment costs. An analyser in a blending application enables proportioning of different quality feed materials from multiple stockpiles to achieve a desired compositional consistency for process feed. The parameter used for decisions may be; a) primary metal content, e.g. Cu, Fe, P, etc. b) deleterious component content, e.g. Mg as an indicator of talc content, c) process parameter content, or a combination of these. Process parameter content may be the elemental ratio between critical components, e.g. Cu:S ratio, Fe:Si ratio, basicity, Lime Saturation Factor, etc. or the content of an “indicator” element, e.g. Si as an indicator of material hardness or grindability.Measurement of the composition in real time enables prompt feedback to the mining operators and also feed forward to the process operators. Compositional variability can be critical in the process and advance warning enables appropriate reactions prior to processing. This may include modifying the feed rate, changing the feed blend (through additives), or modifying reagent dosing in anticipation of a change in feed quality. Benefits include, but are not limited to; reducing waste processing, improved feed grade stability, reducing energy, water and grinding media consumption, producing less tailings, increasing process efficiency, higher metal recovery, better plant utilisation, reducing plant downtime, better utilising mined material, all achieved using the same process plant throughput capacity.CITATION:Kurth, H, 2015. EDWIN W. KEMMERER, professor of international finance at Princeton, in a speech before a banking conference at Urbana, Ill., on Nov. 26, stated that the increase in the store of gold held by the United States is not so alarming as it appears on the surface. Excerpts from his address, as reported by The New York Times, follow: "It is significant . . . that the value of gold as expressed in its purchasing power in the United States during the last half-dozen years has been higher than at any other equivalent period since our records began 140 years ago. Our so-called 59-cent dollar today buys about 25 per cent more goods at wholesale than did our old dollar in the prosperous year 1926, and an ounce of gold will now buy considerably more than twice what it did then. This present high value of gold is one reason for its recent large production.

The bene?ciation of most massive sul?de ores from the Iberian Pyrite Belt requires extremely ?ne grinding to liberation sizes of K80= 15 µm to 25 µm. For several deposits, mapping of the ore types and metal zoning pat-terns has shown that the different ore types are distributed as ore lenses within the massive sul?des. Mineralogical, textural, and metallogenetic studies have provided an understanding of the distribution of both the vertical and the horizontal metal zonation in the orebodies. Because the ef?ciency of ore processing is affected by ore textures, and because the same mineral commonly has different textures and varies in chemical composition, a relationship between textures of the feed and the middlings must be established for all ore types de?ned at the deposit scale. Quantitative mineralogical methods have been developed to provide, on a timely basis, the information needed to optimize the concentration processes for the massive sul?de ores at the Aljustrel and Neves-Corvo deposits, Iberian Pyrite Belt, Portugal.

One of the more difficult topics to address concerns the effects of vibration on historic structures. Not only blast induced vibration, but also vibration from other transient and semi-continuous sources like, traffic, human activity, and environment forces. A common question might be, “What level of blast-re l a ted PPV is considered safe?” A review of some of the papers available from the ISEE Explosives Reference Database on CD ROM shows that 0.50 inch per second was often used. It was not clear on what basis this value was selected except that it represents the low frequency limit for plaster developed by the United States Bureau of Mines in RI 8507. In another case, a limit of 0.20 inch per second was mentioned, apparently simply because it was ten times less than 2.00 inches per second.

SEVERAL years ago, I estimated the total stock of gold in the world to be about a thousand million ounces, of which rather over one-third was available for monetary uses. Robert H. Ridgway has estimated the world's production from 1493 to 1927 as slightly over this amount. Of this total, 1.5 per cent was produced between 1493 and 1850 (before the Californian and Australian goldfields began to flood the world with gold), 331/2 per cent from 1851 to 1900, and 511/2 per cent from 1900 to 1927. Allowing for loss by attrition and permanent consumption in the arts, and for loss of buried treas¬ure, my first-mentioned estimate is perhaps not far from the truth; but my estimate of the monetary stock was certainly too low. Of the total production stated by Rid-way. 28 per cent came from North America. 26.9 per cent from Africa, 1.6.8 per cent from Australasia, 12.4 per cent from South America, and 11.2 per cent from Asia. Excepting that from the African conglomerate beds, the ultimate origin of which is still the subject of controversy, by far the greater part of the total production was derived from alluvials. Weighing all contingencies, it is improbable that any such production as has been made during the last forty years will be repeated in any similar period, if the present price level is maintained. The gold standard today seems firmly established except for temporary digressions. Nevertheless, no well-informed mining engineer will venture to assert the probability that the material for its maintenance throughout future generations can be furnished.
