The local geology, the lack of recorded mining activity, and our field investigation and associated sampling indicate a low potential for mineral resources. Claim records and the literature review failed to show any lode or heavy mineral placer mining claim locations that are definitely in the area or anomalous mineral concentrations in the study area. Field investigations revealed no claims, prospects, or mineralized areas.

In response to increased aluminum demand, U.S. producers have begun reactivating primary aluminum capacity which was shutdown during the 1974-1975 recession. Reynolds Metals Company started up almost 80,000 tons per year of idled capacity at Listerhill, Alabama, and Jones Mills and Arkadelphia, Arkansas plants. Howmet Aluminum Corporation and Alumax announced that the operating rate at their jointly owned facility at Frederick, Maryland was being increased from 75 percent to 100 percent, equivalent to a 44,000 ton-per-year increase in output. Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. expected to restart one of the two idled potlines at its Mead, Washington facility in May raising its production rate by 27,000 tons per year. ANTHRACITE - The anthracite market for the larger sizes continues at a good level, and although the demand for industrial sizes has been weak, the current trend indicates an increased demand for industrial fines by the steel, auto, and other industries.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. The old fatalistic idea that industrial accidents were a necessary part of industry and that little, if anything, could be done about them has been succeeded by realization that a majority of the hazards causing these accidents were man-made and that if they could be recognized most of them could be eliminated and the accidents prevented. Recognition of these facts has brought about substantial reduction of accidents in many coal dines, as well as in other industries. Knowledge of the hazards and their elimination has been obtained largely through a study of individual accidents and the causes which led up to them. With this thought in mind tae available data on coal-mine explosions in Illinois were studied.

Abstract: In recent years, probabilistic approach with the calculation of probability of failure instead of a factor of safety against failure is emerging in practice. The main objective of the paper is to discuss a probabilistic approach in rock slope stability analysis for Himalayan conditions. Due to the fragile geology brought about by the tectonic movements along the hill slopes, dramatic variations of the topography and intensive surface runoff during every monsoon season, serious slope failures occur frequently in Himalayan region. Slope failures have also been triggered by seismic activities. The probabilistic approach is applied to stability analysis for a road cut along the Desander back slope of the Kali Gandaki hydropower project in Nepal. It is concluded that the probability approach offers a more accurate grasp of the actual condition than any factor of safety. Zusammenfassung: In den letzten Jahren ist es mehr gewöhnlich geworden, ein stochastisches Verfahren und eine Berechnung von der Wahrscheinlichkeit eines Zusammenbruchs statt einer Berechnung von Sicherheitsfaktoren zu verwenden. Das Hauptziel dieses Artikels ist das stochastische Verfahren in Stabilitätsanalyse von Gebirghängen, welches an Himalayische Verhältnisse angewandt worden ist, zu diskutieren. Wegen der spröden Geologie die durch tektonische Bewegungen entstanden ist und den dramatischen topographischen Variationen sowie viel Oberflächenwasser während des Monsuns, kommen in der Region des Himalayas oft mehrere erhebliche Abhangszusammenbrüche vor. Abhangszusammenbruche ist auch von seismische Aktivität ausgelöst worden. Das stochastisches Verfahren ist auch benutzt worden, um die Stabilität von einem Wegschnitt in dem Desander Gebiet von dem Kali Gandaki Wasserwerk-Projekt zu analysieren. Die schlussfolgerung ist, dass die Ergebnisse eines stochastisches Verfahren die wirkliche Verhältnisse eines Abhangs besser beschreibt als der Sicherheitsfaktor. Résumé:- Ces dernières années, une approche probabiliste basée sur le calcul d’une probabilité de cassure au lieu d’un facteur de sécurité préventif d’une cassure est de plus en plus utilisée. L’objectif principal de ce papier est de discuter une approche probabiliste de la stabilité de versants rocheux en himalaya. Due à la fragile géologie causée par les mouvements tectoniques sur les versants de collines, aux dramatiques variations de topographie, ainsi qu’au lessivage intense du relief à chaque mousson, de sérieux glissements de terrains se produisent fréquemment en Himalaya. Les glissements de terrain sont aussi déclenchés par l’activité sismique. Cette approche probabiliste est appliquée aux analyses de stabilité d’une section de route le long du versant arrière Desander du projet « hydropower » du Kali Gandaki au Népal. On en conclut que l’approche probabiliste offre une estimation plus précise des conditions actuelles que n’importe quel facteur de sécurité.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

"Sulphur is apparently a normal Constituent of crude petroleum, but in most crudes is present in percentages of less than one-half of one per cent. Some crudes, however, contain more, and occurrences have been reported of heavy asphaltic oils with as much as five per cent of sulphur.Occurrences of Sulpher-bearing CrudesIn North America, the fields rest of the Mississippi River are almost entirely free from sulphur oils, the time oil from Northern Ohio and Indiana, and the Potrolia crude in Ontario, being practically the only ones which contain sulohur in amounts over 0.5. per cent. In the Mid-Continent district the production of high sulphur crude in general is small and unim¬portant. The two main excentions are the Healdton field in Oklahoma and the El Dorado field in Arkansas, both of which produce oils with considerable sulphur content. In the Wyoming field, one sand, the Ember Sandstone, pro¬duces a crude of high sulphur content, and it is probable that this crude rill be of considerable importance as production increases. At present, however, very little crude is produced from this formation. In the Gulf Coast conditions are irregular, some crudes being low in sulphur and others comparatively high. The same is largely true of California. The crudes of Mexico contain notable amounts of sulphur, and as they have been of great commercial importance in this country, a typical sample of light Mexican crude was selected for the present study. It is probable that the results obtained poly also (but to a lesser degree) to other sulphur-bearing oils. An analysis of this crude will be found in Table 3, also analyses of other typical sulphur-bearing crudes from different sections of the United States."

The design and operation of the Koppers powdered-coal gasifier and its auxiliaries at Louisiana, Mo., are described. This unit was designed to convert 1 ton of coal per hour with oxygen and superheated steam into synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The first run was made on May 4, 1949. After this, 44 short runs (less than 8 hours each) and 1 long run (lasting 11 days) were made. Total gasification time was 420 hours. The gasifier was not cooled down during the year when these runs were made. After an initial period of test operations and equipment proving, during which 12 runs were made, the effect of numerous variables on gasifier performance was studied. The long run was made primarily to check the equipment in sustained operation. Detailed data from these runs are presented.

Over the last few years, and especially the last few months, issues relating to Corporate Governance in industry in general, and the Minerals industry in particular, have become increasingly topical, as a result of a number of scandals and failures. The development of International and National Codes for the reporting of Mineral Resources and Reserves began some years ago, and has been followed by more stringent Listing Rules for the Securities Exchanges, as well as more standardised formats and protocols for financial reporting of assets and activities. More recently, some countries have adopted Codes for the Valuation of Mineral Properties, which have focussed on standardisation of valuation approaches to be adopted, and the qualifications of people deemed competent to sign off such valuations. This process has not been without criticism, the main criticism being the proliferation of local standards and regulations, which are often difficult to apply and regulate, or which are too prescriptive for multinational mining companies to deal with. In South Africa, these concerns have been recognised, while at the same time a need has been identified to establish a Code which could be applied to South Africa, and the African continent as a whole. Such a development would necessitate that the Code satisfies the needs of the continent, but in a global context. This global context has already been set by the activities of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions, the International Valuations Standards Committee and the International Accounting Standards Board. This paper explains the progress and process that has been established in South Africa for this purpose, and highlights the key issues which are open to public debate, so that the process is inclusive and transparent, whilst at the same time it is consistent with international time frames, and provides a deliverable product that meets the desired objectives.

"Automatic flotation control in varying degrees of sophistication is practiced at a number of concentrators throughout the world. Practically, the variable conditions in the flotation circuit and the difficulty in maintaining accurate instrumentation information all add to the complexity of automatic control.Further development at the Kidd Creek concentrator has resulted in a 3075 mtpd copper flotation circuit capable of running twenty-four hours a day under the direct control of an optimizing supervisory computer.Three main streams, continuously monitored by an XRF analyser, supply circuit information to the optimizing computer. Circuit efficiency calculations (from smelter contract terms) and target setpoints allow the computer to determine the economic optimum direction to move the circuit based on the grade/recovery relationship. Circuit manipulation is accomplished by precise pumping of collector and frother reaqents together with accurate control of flotation bank pulp levels. The former uses computer controlled diaphragm pumps and the latter is achieved by control loops utilizing a float type level transmitter, variable position dart plugs and a process computer working to setpoints determined by the optimizing computer.The development of a fully automated flotation circuit is by no means complete, but increased knowledge and major hardware improvements have allowed its progression to a higher level of sophistication."

The investigations carried on at the fuel-testing plant of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1904-1907 included tests of the steaming and gas-producing qualities of many coals and of the possibilif3 of their improvement by briquetting, together with washing and coking tests and tests of some of the resulting coke in the cupola. These tests were part of a general inquiry into the manner of utilizing most efficiently each of the coals under investigation. The equipment used in the cupola tests of coke, the manner of conducting the tests, and the essential results have been described in publications of the Geological Survey," and only the more important conclusions to be drawn from the tests are mentioned in the following pages. The tests were made to show the fitness of the cokes for foundry purposes, but an incidentlll result was to show foundry men and the coke producers the advisability of studying the conditions of foundry practice. The present bulletin, published by the Bureau of Mines because the analyzing and testing of fuels have been transferred from the Gilological Survey to the Bureau of Mines, briefly reviews the status of the coke industry, some features of practice in the use of coke in the foundry, the probable happenings of a cupola heat, and the reasons for modifying charging practice so that a particular coke can be used to best advantage.

We consider the Grubbs estimation of the precision of an online gauge. Typically, this type of estimation involves independent results from two or more reference instruments (sampling and laboratory analysis operations). The properties of the estimator are then independent of the product variability. However, the use of more than one reference instrument entails significant additional costs. The two-instrument Grubbs estimator, which is based on results from a gauge and a single reference instrument, has the disadvantage that its standard error is heavily dependent on the degree of product variability. We propose a new estimator that has a variance that is more or less independent of product variability. In fact, the variance is typically less than that of the Grubbs estimator based on the use of two reference instruments. In order to function successfully, our methodology requires some prior knowledge of the extent of product variability and of gauge precision. In practice, such prior knowledge is often available and it is a weakness of the traditional two - and three-instrument Grubbs methods that no use is made of such knowledge. The efficacy and robustness of the new method is illustrated by Monte Carlo simulation.

THE use of small substations for the supplying of 275-volt energy to the locomotive and cutting machines in coal mines is a well-established practice. A few years ago, when labor costs were lower, these substations were located as near to the load as possible, and an operator was provided for each station. This practice has now become so expensive that substations are being located with reference to other mining machinery, such as hoists or pumps, so that one operator can look after both. Some-times the substation is operated by one whose duties make him traverse quite a large area. In such cases the interruption of alternating-current supply may produce a long interruption in the direct current, as the station cannot resume service until this man reaches it. Such interruptions interfere seriously with production and may easily counterbalance the supposed saving gained by such operating methods. The grouping of substations for convenience in operating may also result in excessive copper loss and consequently poor trolley voltage, with its attendant evils of low locomotive speeds and increased locomotive motor maintenance. The speed of the coal-cutting machines will also be reduced. By relieving the substation of its, burden of the operating labor cost, the most economical location, from an electrical standpoint, may be chosen. The matter of machine insurance should also be considered. If an attendant is caring for several kinds of equipment, he cannot watch the machine continually for signs of trouble; therefore, continued overload, phase failure, low alternating-current voltage, bearing trouble, etc. may result. Some partly automatic equipments have been installed; these have protection against low voltage, reverse current, and bearing trouble and are provided with automatic reclosing circuit breakers. This is a step in the right direction but it does not go far enough to give first-class machine insurance.

As a part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report The inherent suitability of coal for metallurgical purposes depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, Be well as the amount of available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. The selection of coal beds in Harlan County, Ky., for coking tests was based, in part, on recent studies of coal reserves by Wallace,3/ who estimated the recoverable reserves in beds 28 inches or more thick, in tons, as follows:

This is the final article in a three-part series on microcomputers and application software in the mineral industry. The first article covered microcomputer terms and concepts. The second discussed exploration and mining software. This article will examine plant, administrative, and geotechnical software. Every effort has been made to be current in the latest software developments. Rapid change, however, is a fact of life in the computer world and any omission is inadvertent. Introduction Geotechnical disciplines have received considerable attention in software programming. Calculations are repetitive and the formulas needed to solve them are not extremely complicated. These programs are ideally suited to the microcomputer and the microcomputer is ideally suited to the consulting geologist or engineer, due to its low cost and reliability. In fact, the advent of the Apple (a registered trademark of Apple Computer Inc.) and, more recently, the IBM personal computer has caused an explosion of inexpensive software programs available to the microcomputing public. Another area that has benefited from computerization, although not in the same way, has been mineral beneficiation. Here, process control for start-up or phase-down operations has been used in newer plants for some time. Programs to perform various calculations are becoming more common as micros increase in number. Tappi Journal has a section with solutions to handheld-calculator and microcomputer problems. Process Modeling Most process modeling is still done only on mainframes. One such program is called ASPEN PLUS (a registered trademark of Aspen Technology), and a one-week course is recommended so the user can best use the program. This program is available through timesharing from University Computing Co. Programs to find an optimal solution using Linear Programming (LP) have been around for some time. Also, plant process simulation has been possible using simulation programs. Both simulation and LP are expensive to program and run. Although there are LP programs available for some micros, the user must be fairly knowledgeable about how to set up the problem. This is because each problem must be set up as a unique program that typically requires custom programming. There are some programs that can handle blending of mine crudes and examine economic parameters over the life of the mine. Plant Applications Areas relating to mine and plant applications with programs available for micros are maintenance, production reporting, inventory, accounting, and personnel scheduling. Maintenance Maintenance typically requires that certain jobs be performed in a particular sequence and parts be ordered with enough lead time for maintenance to take place on time. There is, therefore, a critical sequence of tasks that must be performed or the scheduled maintenance will not take place. The residues from mining and processing ores can often be considered as secondary raw materials. However, the material is only available in the form of fine particles (< 3 mm). In order to recycle these wastes, it is necessary to agglomerate it for transportation prior to reprocessing. The resulting agglomerates need to mechanically resist the stress of transportation and loading into the furnace. X-ray computed tomography (CT) is an established method for characterisation of internal structures in material science. This non-destructive technique can provide information on size and distribution of particles and grains. However, the information is not limited to the size, but also can yield structural features like orientation and position of cracks and fractures, which are important features indicating potential for deteriorating the agglomerates. Furthermore, deduced features such as contact conditions of inclusions or boundary surfaces can also be calculated. We studied binder-free tablets of manganese-oxyhydroxide, bentonite, kaolinite and slag powder using micro-CT. Inclusions of highly absorbing particles were identified using a watershed transformation with automatic segmentation by Otsu thresholding. Subsequently, the resulting data was analysed regarding their volume percentage, distribution in size and location within the sample. For the slag agglomerates, the volume fraction of iron could be determined. Furthermore, visible cracks were investigated with the goal to determine the long-term durability. It was shown that the data provided by micro-CT is reliable and helpful for the characterisation of industrial waste agglomerates. BM37 is a bonanza-grade (&gt;30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;Au (ave. 52 wt per cent&nbsp;Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent&nbsp;Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

The calculation of the dose to the bronchial epithelium, lungs and other body tissues from exposures to airborne radon and thoron daughters requires a knowledge of the pattern of deposition in the respiratory system and clearance from it. Exposure to radon or thoron daughters is measured in units of Working Level Months (WLM), which is independent of the aerosol particle size, the fraction of daughters that are attached to the aerosol and the degree of disequilibria between the daughters, and age and breathing rate of the subject. These factors will influence the deposition and clearance, and hence dose. It is therefore of interest to find the relationship between WLM and calculated dose as a function of aerosol size, unattached fraction, and disequilibria, and of age and breathing rate, and to define ranges for these parameters for which WLM is an acceptable measure of the risk. This presentation briefly reviews the two dosimetry models being considered by a current Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) Working Group, and using these models, defines limits on parameters for which the WLM is applicable.

The U.S. Geological Survey has conducted an assessment of the Nation’s coal deposits that potentially could be mined during the next 30 or more years. For the Gulf Coastal Plain region, the assessment includes reviews of the stratigraphy, coal quality and resources, and coalbed methane potential of the Cretaceous, Paleocene, and Eocene coal deposits in the region. The results of these efforts are a series of digital maps, text, and tables published in CD-ROM format. Although abundant coal resources are available in the Gulf Coast region, coal quality issues may limit large-scale development in the future. Additional data are required to better evaluate the coalbed methane resource potential for the Gulf Coast region.
