A problem has always existed in deep and fast drilling situations such as coal overburden drilling, or when drilling with a tight annulus, such as 9 7/8" bits and 8 5/8" pipe. This problem is the difficulty experienced by blasthole bit and blasthole drill rig manufacturers to attain large jumps in bit and drill rig productivity through bit and rig design, when drilling in these specific situations. In other drilling situations, these large jumps in productivity have been easily attained.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature, and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68 °C and 141 °C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system, and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature, and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

"The Key Lake uranium mine is the largest single uranium producer in the world. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco Corporation and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining. Cameco is the operator. Current production is fourteen million pounds per year of uranium oxide (U308).The mine's location is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca Basin approximately at latitude 57° 11 'north and longitude 105° 34' west. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.The mill was commissioned in 1983. A molybdenum plant was constructed in 1989 in response to increasing molybdenum content in the yellowcake or final product. Early test work had showed that the first ore body to be mined, the Gaertner deposit, would present few problems with regards to molybdenum in the product. However, the test work also showed that the higher molybdenum content of the Deilmann ore, the second Key Lake orebody to be mined, would result in increased molybdenum concentrations. Without the molybdenum plant, penalties would become excessive and some product might not accepted by the refineries.This paper will describe the current Key Lake mill process with emphasis on the molybdenum solvent extraction process. It will cover the chemistry of the process, process development in the mid 1980's, and current operating practices.The Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants, crushing and grinding, leaching -counter current decantation (CCD), solvent extraction, yellowcake/crystallization and bulk neutralization (Figure 1. Simplified Mill Flowsheet). A detailed mill flowsheet can be found in the appendix."

[The purpose of this paper is to present type: of charts adapted to aid in the graphic solution of fan-performance problems of selection and operation, and to urge the adoption of similar charts by the National Association of Fan Manufactures as standard forms for presenting fan-performance data. Research and testing in a small scale equivalent of a commercial flota-tion plant was completed on four low-grade, iron-bearing materials from the western Mesabi range. Closed circuit-flotation of calcium-activated silica with fatty acid collector developed data for comparison with the batch process and highlighted problems not evident from previous bench testing. The four ore samples contained from 27 to 39 percent Fe and were equally represented by nonmagnetic taconite and semitaconite type materials. Iron concentrates containing 6.0 percent, or less, SiO2 were made 5, all four samples. Of the two material types, the semitaconite was the ore amenable to treatment, yielding iron recoveries of about 90 percent as cc pared with 70 to 80 percent for the other. Pilot plant tests showed that concentrate grade made in batch tests could be duplicated in the closed circuit and demonstrated that the amount of recoverable middling iron varied considerably between ore samples. The continuous tests also showed that water temperature strongly influenced results in the treatment of one ore but apparently was of indifferent consequence in another. Progress in thickening and filtration of flotation concentrates was made through introduction of tapioca flour to serve the dual role of iron mineral depressant and flocculant.

The Unit of Toxicological Risk Assessment of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is conducting a 'Health Risk Assessment for Metallic Chromium and Trivalent Chromium' under the sponsorship of the International Chromium Development Association (ICDA) and the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF). This risk assessment will be conducted in accordance with the current European Union legislation in force (Council Regulation 793/93/EEC, Commission Regulation 1488/94/EEC, Dir. 67/548/EEC), but also to meet the regulatory obligations as set out in the European Commission REACH legislation proposal (Consultation Document, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restrictions of CHemicals). Further aims include outlining the criteria for the setting of occupational exposure limits for metallic chromium and trivalent chromium compounds. Human Health Risk Assessment according to the current legislation shall entail hazard identification of the toxic end points (acute toxicity, irritation/corrosivity, sensitisation, repeated dose toxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity) including, as appropriate, dose (concentration) - response assessment, and derivation of the N(L)OAELs (No (Lowest) Observed Adverse Effect Level) and/or DNELs (Derived No Effect Level). Exposure assessments for workers, consumers and humans exposed via the environment take into account all the known intended uses. Risk characterisation will compare the typical and/or reasonable worst case exposure estimates to the N(L)OAELs or DNELs to determine Margins of Safety (MOS) for all human populations by each exposure scenario and type of effect, followed by conclusions about the presence or absence of risk. Although all of the key elements of existing legislation remain in REACH, the principal change is that, the burden of proof will be transferred from the member state authorities to industry. The new proposed format of Chemical Safety Report (CSR) will include Risk Management Measures (RMM) as an essential part of the report in addition to the risk assessment. The RMM plays a role in the evaluation of further testing needs and advocating reasons for possible waiwer of requirements. The research programme started in March 2002 and will be completed within the time frame of two years.

Tantalum is a rare element ; estimates indicate that there is less tantalum than gold in the earth's crust . After remaining a laboratory curiosity for many years , it was used to a limited extent and for relatively few years (1903- 1911) for incandescent electric-light -bulb filaments . Another wave of interest in tantalum appeared when its electrolytic-valve action was taken advantage of in charging storage batteries , especially for radio work . Tantalum chargers were eventually displaced by other types of chargers , but for a time they were manufac tured in sufficiently large numbers to create a demand for the metal and to bring about its production on a commercial scale in the United States . As tantalum became available in larger quantities and at substantially lower prices , and as high prices for platinum encouraged the employment of tantalum as a substitute , the metal was put to many new uses . Ferrotantalum was made and sold before the World War , and patents have been taken out for a number of special alloys for industrial purposes , but probably the largest use for the metal to-day is in vacuum tubes .

Plastics recycling has become an established national industry in Korea. However, it is still in its infant stage and experiences growing pains. In Korea, mixed plastic wastes generated from households after hand picking and/or mechanical sorting processes amount to 1,700,000 ton per year in 2005, and most of these waste are finally end up with landfill and/or incineration due to lacks of separation technologies and economical reasons. These plastic wastes can not be used as raw materials for chemical and/or thermal recycling because of their high content of PVC (upto 4.0 wt.%). In the present work, gravity separation system has been developed to remove PVC from the mixed plastic waste and recover the individual plastics. The separation system mainly consists of air classification, crushing, feeding system at fixed rate and wet-type gravity separation system. The gravity system based on centrifugal separation also consists of mixing, precleaning, separation, dewatering, recovery system, wastewater treatment system, etc. The main objective of this process to be developed is to achieve high separation efficiency of polyolefins (PE, PP, PS) with less than 0.3 wt.% PVC content and less than 10% moisture content in the final products. The system with a capacity of 0.5 ton per hour is developed and operational results are presented.

Bench scale and pilot plant research was conducted using dolomites (CaO,MgO) lime as the basic additive in the preparation of self-fluxed pellets from a typical magnetic taconite concentrate (5.57 S_2). The specific objective of this investigation was to ascertain the viability of the magnesia lime pellets in high temperature oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Pellet basicity and induration temperature were major parameters affecting fired pellet quality; temperatures ranging from 1,200° to 1,250" C appeared to be the most favorable for production of self-fluxed pellets with basesities (B) above 1.0. Comparison of the mechani¬cal and metallurgical properties of regular (acid) and self-fluxed pellets (B 1.55) produced under similar conditions in a modified grate pelletizing machine showed that the self-fluxed pellets were more resistant to abrasion and to high and low temperature reduction disintegration, an important consideration in commercial application. The Plus 3 mesh Linder index increased from 68 percent (regular pellets) to over 90 percent (self-fluxed pellets). The reducibility and swelling indices of the self-fluxed pellets were found to be comparable to the regular pellets.

The BIOX® culture, aiding liberation of arsenopyrite/pyrite occluded gold, is inhibited by thiocyanate (SCN > 1 mg/L); precluding the recycling of tailings water up-stream of the bioleaching circuit. The activated sludge tailings effluent remediation (ASTERTM) process is a biological process that was developed to facilitate water recovery and treat waste water on-site (to achieve a SCN concentration < 1 mg/L) to be recycled or disposed of. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changing temperature and SCN loading on the SCN degradation ability of the mixed microbial population clue to seasonal temperature changes and fluctuations of SCN concentration in the waste water.

ThePike River coal field is located between 700 and 1000 m above sea level on the West Coast of the South Island. The area contains a resource of some 60 million tonnes of coal in a single coal seam and is part of the Paparoa mountain range that receives between 6.0 and 6.5 m of rainfall per annum. The area has been isolated and has received no on the coal plateau but has been extensively logged in the lower 3.5 km of Pike Stream. The PRCC development proposal recognises this and calls for an environmentally benign development that includes underground development of this resource. The coalfield abuts and is partly overlain by the Paparoa National Park. The underground development will enable a number of environmental goals to be readily achieved: it will be out of sight of the public,it will not impact the national park,noise will be mostly absent,there will be absolute minimal disturbance to the land surface,coal will be transported from the mine to a dewatering complex on PRCC land in a slurry pipeline thus obviating the need for trucks and noise in Pike Stream valley,all water draining from the mine will be collected, treated if required to consent standards and discharged from a single point,the road into the area will allow for an effective predator control programme to be undertaken enhancing native bird life,an environment suitable for the reintroduction of Whio (Blue Duck) will be created, andthe net effect of the mine development on the environment will be positive.

"The tungsten (WO3)-rich ores from King Island Scheelite (KIS) Mine, Australia, containing scheelite(CaWO4) were previously recovered by gravity separation and flotation of fine scheelite (1978-92) with an overall recovery of 76% when both circuits were operating. Recently extensive test work has been conducted both in China and in Australia on KIS ores, assaying from 0.50%-1.34%WO3, and tailings assaying 0.2%WO3(GZRINM 2009; 2011a; 2011b). A new approach, which aimed at improving both recovery and grade of concentrate by means of an innovative all flotation route WOF (Whole Ore Flotation), achieved excellent results: 90%-92% recovery to concentrate grade of 66%-70%WO3for the ores. The process is characterized by the use of selective reagents in flotation, including a newly developed collector for scheelite, GYWA. The WOF process also embraces the "Improved Petrov Method" in the cleaning of scheelite rougher concentrate. Earlier investigations found that the removal of sulfides by flotation prior to scheelite flotation was not necessary. It was also found that recycling of process water did not influenceresults. Two main ore types were tested as well as tailings from 2009to 2001(0.20%WO3). In addition a flow sheet using wet high gradient magnetic separation (WHGMS) in tandem with flotation was also investigated for the tailings."

This paper describing the milling practice of the Hecla Mining Co. is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The concentrator of the Hecla Mining Co., which utilizes combined gravity and flotation methods, is located at Gem, Shoshone County, Idaho, about 2 miles south of the Hecla mine at Burke. It has a maximum capacity of 900 tons per day and all ore treated is drawn from the company&apos;s Hecla mine. Milling ore for 1910 contained 9.7 per cent of lead, 1.2 per cent of zinc, and 4.77 ounces of silver per ton.

Some months before taking up work on black powder the Survey had resumed work on an interrupted investigation of explosions in coal-mines, a subject which is engaging the attention. of numerous investigators. An unusual number of serious disasters has directed to. the subject a study which discloses the disquieting fact that, in the. United States, the ratio of lives lost per ton of coal mined has been on the increase. Methods of coal-mining have changed to some extent with the great increase of output, attained in, comparatively recent years. These changes involve the working of very extensive mines, with increased difficulty of ventilation, increased accumulation of coal-dust, and. a very great increase in the amount of explosive used.. . This last point assumes truly startling proportions when it is carefully observed. In the fields of the Middle. West it is not now uncommon for a miner to use six ,kegs (150 lb.) of black powder in a "pay" of two weeks, while within the memory. of men still active, one keg (25 .lb.) would last two men for a " pay." So. great has . the use of explosives become in some fields that the skilled coal-miner is hard to find, and the coal is not mined, but blasted. Hecla?s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d?Alene mining district of northern Idaho. Main access into, and production from, the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk by J.S. Redpath to an original depth of 1,890 m (6,200 ft) in the early 1980s. The shaft is divided into four compartments (Fig. 1), with sets made of 225 mm x 175 mm (9 in. x 7 in.) hollow structural section (HSS) steel buntons and 150-mm x 150-mm (6-in. x 6-in.) HSS dividers spaced every 4.5 m (15 ft) down the length of the shaft. Two skip compartments on the east side of the shaft are equipped with 125-mm x 150-mm (5-in. x 6-in.) HSS steel guides and 9-t (10-st) skips with three deck trailer cages for men and materials. The west side of the shaft is divided into a manway, and a fourth compartment that was originally designed for a service cage. Shaft services consist of a 250-mm (10-in.) a compressed air line and 150-mm (6-in.) sandfill line along the south side of the shaft, and 250-mm (10-in.) discharge (gray) water and 150 mm (6 in.) fresh water lines on the north wall. The mine?s primary 13.8 kV power lines, as well as communication lines are located on the west wall of the shaft. The production hoist is a 3.7-m (12-ft) diameter, double drum, double clutch, 2,238 kW (3,000 hp), direct current unit equipped, at the time, with thyristor drives. The 30-year-old drives would prove to be problematic during the rehabilitation project, leading to an upgrade to modern ABB drives later in the project, after the shaft rehabilitation was complete. The shaft had been subjected to the typical wear and tear of 30 years of operation, including intermittent sandfill and muck spills, and, in the lower areas, some corrosion. During those 30 years, the west compartment, originally designed for the service cage, could only be accessed from a work deck on top of the skips or from the manway.

lmenite is a primary ore feed to the DuPont chloride process for the manufacture of titanium diox-ide pigment. We seek to determine ilmenite geochemistry as a function of original source and as-certain which ilmenites have chemistry most amenable to upgrading via iron-leaching (leucoxenization) and that have favorable, with respect to pigment manufacture, trace element content. Ilmenite geochemistry is a function of its primary origin and of subsequent alteration. Heavy mineral sand deposits may contain ilmenite from one or several dominant source rock(s). In addition, ilmenite may alter in the weathering environment, changing the major element compo-sition (iron-leaching) and certain of the minor element content. A primary objective is to classify ilmenites in relation to origin in order to fingerprint source rocks in provenance determination. The changes in trace element chemistry during alteration are also investigated. A “decision tree” is developed to classify ilmenite types and source rock origins. Ultimately, with those methods and by amassing a database of ilmenite types from worldwide locations, it should prove possible to determine ilmenites (and their sources) more susceptible to iron leaching in the weathering en-vironment. Such ilmenites, enhanced in their titanium content, are the preferred ore targets. The method used is electron microprobe analyses at elevated conditions of voltage, cur-rent, and counting time to enable higher precision. In-situ ilmenites from igneous, metamorphic, and altered rocks (saprolites) are analyzed. Initial foci for sedimentary ilmenites are restricted provenance (approaching monogenetic, examples from Spain, Portugal) and polygenetic prove-nance (Denmark). Altered ilmenites, including the DuPont Florida ore, are used to characterize the chemistry of leucoxenization. Trace element concentration, detectability, and cost considera-tion, led to focus on Mn, Mg, V, Cr, and Nb to develop a classification scheme validated by dis-criminant analysis and “classification-regression trees”. Results show a high degree of success for restricted provenance study and an acceptable one for polygenetic provenance.

"An introduction to the metallurgical requirements of the Flin Flon concentrator reveals the magnitude of ore blending which is required in its operation of three flotation circuits. The resulting variability in flotation heads which has in-creased the separations complexity justified the development of an on-line analysis system.This paper provides a summary of the development and operation of that system. Particular attention is devoted to the problems encountered and where possible their solutions; as the requirements of accurate information and minimum downtime of the sampling system and x-ray analyzer are considered essential. The addition of a recess central computer has provided information in a more easily understood form and as well has allowed the start of automatic reagent control.An indication of the on-line analysis system's value to the concentrators' operation is provided by an examination of the plant in metallurgical data and reagent costs in previous years.The metallurgical plants of Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting lie adjacent to the city of Flin Flon on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. Plant operations commenced in 1930 treating copper-zinc ore from the local mine. In recent years ore bodies near Flin Flon and in the Snow Lake area, about seventy-five miles east, have been brought into production.By the beginning of 1973 the number of producing mines had increased to nine; with all the ore being handled by the Flin Flon concentrator. An assessment of potential groundwater movement beneath the tailing impoundment at the Red Dog Mine was performed, and has indicated a unique aquifer situation within sub-permafrost groundwater at the site. The aquifer was shown to be isolated from both vertical recharge and a real discharge, and is characterized as a virtually no-flow system. The permafrost resulted in a deep aquifer with high tidal efficiency, meaning that variable surface loads are easily transmitted to the fluid. The tidal efficiency has been characterized through analysis of water level fluctuations that respond to earth tides, barometric pressure loads, and loading from the pond.
