The workshop on "Cyanide Effluents from Mineral Processing' was held on February 2-3, 1982, at the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Salt Lake City Research Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. The workshop was sponsored by the minerals industry, supporting industries, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines through the Utah Mining and Mineral Resources Research Institute, College of Mines, University of Utah Prior to the workshop, a Working Paper was prepared and delivered to the participants. This paper was used as a guide during panel discussions and forms the basis for this proceedings document. The workshop focused on use of cyanide as it relates to the gold and silver mining industry and the froth flotation processes employed by mineral mining companies. Its intent was to discuss "state of the art" technology and provide information pertinent to cyanide use in the minerals industry. No attempt was made to advocate regulatory limits or set policy governing the use of cyanide. The principal topics of discussion included- (1) the chemistry and use of cyanides; (2) control and treatment of cyanide mining wastes; (3) toxicity of mining wastes; (4) fate of cyanide in the environment; and (5) the analytical chemistry of cyanide.

Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action to correct the problem. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality leading to a less efficient grinding operation. A dynamic simulator is used to assess rules for the diagnosis of hydrocyclone faults from the trends produced by sensors.

Sampling and analyses of deep waters from Wairakei and Rotokawa geothermal systems indicate a wide range of precious metal concentrations (<0.1 to 23 ppb Au; 6 to 2400 ppb Ag), suggesting that eastern ôandesiticö TVZ geothermal systems (eg Rotokawa) have higher aqueous gold and silver than western ôbasalticö geothermal systems (eg Wairakei); this interpretation is consistent with known occurrences of high grade precipitates in wells from eastern systems. The fact that the deep waters are undersaturated in gold further suggests that the aqueous gold concentrations of deep waters are limited by metal availability. The flux of gold for the two systems ranges from ~1 to 50 kg Au/yr, and the flux of silver ranges from 65 to 6900 kg Ag/yr. At Rotokawa, it only takes ~600 years to flux one million oz of Au and >100 million oz of Ag. The supply of hydrothermal gold and silver is obviously important during genesis of an epithermal deposit, but ore formation also depends on the existence of a suitable ôtrapö that efficiently extracts metal from solution in a small volume of rock. Such traps seem to have been poorly developed until geothermal drilling in the TVZ.

System simulation is an increasingly popular technique for analyzing and improving existing as well as newly designed underground mining operations. An engineering firm that specializes in simulation helped a major metals producer build a long-range planning model of an existing underground mine. Subsequently the team adapted this model to assess technology alternatives in the design of a new mine. The two models differ in the level of detail used for modeling the development process. This paper discusses the differences in approach between the models along with the experiences gained and challenges faced during the construction and use of the models.

The direct method test was developed for general mine safety applications by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the early 1970's to measure the gas content of coal samples obtained from the relatively shallow depths of eastern U.S. coal mines. Over time, applications for gas content data evolved which required increasingly accurate desorption values. It became evident that some of the inherent weaknesses in the original direct method test could best be addressed by abandoning the water displacement based desorbed gas volume measurements. The ideal gas law based modified direct method (MDM) and associated desorbed gas volume measurement apparatus was developed to provide the most accurate desorption values possible for rock samples obtained from any gas-bearing strata. The MDM has a number of significant advantages, including: (1) increased accuracy, especially for low gas content samples, (2) a test apparatus with an integral sampling port to facilitate the collection of uncontaminated gas samples, (3) an inherent head space effect correction in the periodic MDM desorbed gas volume calculations, (4) measurement of positive and negative desorbed gas volumes, (5) elimination of differential gas solubility effects as a source of error inherent in the water displacement methods, and (6) a compact and rugged test apparatus that along with the elimination of the ?glassware? required for the water displacement methods, facilitates its use in the field.

"Rubber liners at Denison Mines Limited are used in 10 1/2x 24' low discharg0 pebble mills. These were originally 10 1/2 x 13 Dominion overflow type ball mills. Experience here shows that the wear of rubber and ni-hard lifters is approximately the same in the feed end half of the mill, while the wear of rubber lifters is much greater in the discharge half. The wear of rubber plates is considerably less than white iron in the feed end half of the Mill and slightly more in the discharge end half of the Mill. Rubber components are lighter to handle but their installation is time consuming. This leads to the conclusion that a combination of ni-hard lifters a~~ rubber plates is the most economical compromise in Denison's case, for the Mill. A technique was devised for measuring the rate of chemical reactions between reactive metals and molten-salt mixtures at high temperatures. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction between high-purity titanium metal and titanium trichloride in molten sodium chloride was determined. The reaction is surface-controlled, and the heat of activation is 8.29 kilocalories per mole TiC13. An active site or reaction nuclei is created by adsorbing a TiC13 molecule at the metal surface. Reaction of the second TiC13 species forms an activated complex that decomposes into three TiC12 molecules.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing gypsum mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation so that there may be no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulation. This paper deals specifically with the mining and crushing methods employed by Victor Plaster, Inc., Victor, Ontario County, N. Y. The maximum annual production capacity of this company is 150,000 tons of crushed gypsum. The methods and practices employed arc typical of those followed in the gypsum mines in western New York State. The shaft is, perhaps, the deepest and the thickness of the gypsum mined is above the average for the section.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

Due to operational conditions and locations, BOF suffers variations in important parameters whose effects on the liquid bath are usually neglected. The present paper investigated two aspects: inner BOF pressure and oxygen temperature in the stagnant reservoir. The results have shown that oxygen temperature changes properties like density and velocity but has small influence on jet penetration. The BOF inner pressure has significant influence on jet penetration and creates a new challenge regarding nozzles dimensions considering overexpanding and underexpading jets.

Several areas at the DOZ haulage were observed for the crusher’s location. Initially the new crusher designed position was west of the crusher 1, but due to concerns of the mine crack zone (deep MLZ) the crusher position moved to the south. The new crusher location is situated in a diorite rock massive between 3053 – 3079 levels, with the overall excavation of 2500 cum and dimension of 14m long, 14 m wide and 14 m high. Main Crusher chamber itself excavated by development jumbo in three lifts. Development of access to the bottom crusher was developing the same time as chambering the top crusher. The pocket of the crusher mined with vertical crater retreat system which is initiated in one time after middle slot raise. Collaboration between production and perimeter blast holes to be obtaining in control the actual cuts as per the design shape.

Portable communications equipment is becoming increasingly important in underground mining. Proper selection of microphones and hearing devices to be part of these communication systems is essential if the messages are to be transmitted intelligibly. In this program a thorough study of the requirements for these transducers was made with respect to intelligibility, mechanical configuration, human factors and safety. A computer analysis was made to predict how several combinations of transducers would perform at typical mining noise levels. A survey has been made of those microphones and hearing devices on the market today that might be applicable to the miner communication system. Several systems are proposed and evaluated.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, NV. The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. In De Re Metallica, Agricola reviewed practical means of finding ores, methods of surveying and mining, the assaying of ores, types and uses of mining machinery, smelting, mine administration and more. The Pseudo Static Pile Load Test, PLT, is a rapid method for determining pile capacity. Pile design is usually based on theoretical calculations of ultimate load capacity using soil data from a field investigation. The pile capacity is confirmed during construction by analysis of blow counts using dynamic formulae, dynamic pile monitoring, and load testing. Load testing is the most direct and reliable method of determining the actual capacity of a pile. Conventional load testing procedures, however, are time consuming and expensive. A typical load test requires installation of two to four reaction piles, construction of a high-capacity steel test frame, hydraulic jacks, and dial gauges, and will typically take one to three days per pile. Costs for load tests range from $10,000 to $20,000 per test. The Pile Load Test machine features a 25-tonne weight mounted on a mobile test frame. PLT load tests can be performed in a matter of minutes once the equipment has been mobilized to the site. This paper examines three test sites where the PLT test method was used and compares the results to conventional load test results and theoretical capacity calculations.

In 2001, 14,623 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This was an increase of 210 mining operations compared to 2000. Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone (29%), coal (15%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).

After an unsuccessful transfer from the laboratory to the pilot plant of galena flotation technology which used sodium metabisulphite and ethyl xanthate, laboratory flotation tests were conducted to identify any unusual variables which had a deleterious effect on the position of the lead rougher grade recovery curve for Hilton and Mount Isa silver-lead-zinc ores. Two variables (pulp temperature and contact time for ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite) had important deleterious effects.The findings allowed a successful transfer of the laboratory process to a pilot plant scale process. The effect of temperature was important because the higher temperature (40°C) in the pilot plant pulp increased significantly the rate of reaction between ethyl xanthate and sodium metabisulphite. In the laboratory process at 20 to 25°C, the reaction rate was lower and did not interfere significantly with the process. The contact time for the two reagents was also important in the pilot plant scale process because of the higher reaction rate at 40°C.To employ ethyl xanthate in the pilot plant process, special precautions were required. Further, a collector (Aerofloat 241) from the dithiophosphate family was used successfully in the pilot plant process.

Condusions. From the work on aluminum powder, the following general con clusions can bc drawn: I. The physical properties of aluminum compacts, such as density. strength and ductility, increase with increasing pressure, up to the practicable pressure limits. 2. Good properties ill aluminum con pacts can be secured only by the use of high pressures, because it is neccssary to rupture the refractory oxide film on aluminum powder. 3. Considerable softening of the specimens occurs upon sintering. regardlers of the pressure used. General Conclusions 1. For relatively short-time sintering. molding pressure is a very important factor in the final physical properties of the sintered specimens. 2. The effect of pressure. is difierent for each metal, so that few general rules can be drawn that would apply to all metals. 3. In many cases, fur a particular metal powder and sintering temperature there is a critical pressure at which the best physical properties can be obtained. 4. The principles of cold work and in nealing and their effect on grain structure applied to massive metal also holds true for sintered metals. 5. The Mitsubishi Process is the sole pyrometallurgical process for the continuous production of blister copper from copper concentrates. Continuous converting originates from the application of the proven technology of a lime-ferrite slag (CaO-FeOX-Cu2O) on the Converting Furnace (C-furnace). Recent improvements on the C-furnace operation have included increasing the processing of recycled materials and the investigation of alternative fluxing agents. However, some minor oxides adversely affect C-furnace operation, with respect to magnetite behavior of the slag, with the most significant impact having been observed with the silica content of the slag. This paper will quantify the impact of silica on the lime-based slag, and discusses the controls that have been identified to sustain continuous converting operation.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.
