The contract objective is the development and in mine testing of an Automatic Fire Control System (AFCS) for mobile underground metal mining equipment. The effort described by this report covers the period from June 21,1975 through June 30,1976 and accomplished the following tasks: ? Preparation of Data Handling Plan and data acquisition which included visits to twenty mine sites in eleven states, visits to Bureau and MESA facilities, and a literature survey. ? Data analysis which determined the most hazardous type of vehicle for use in the demonstration, and design requirements for the AFCS, ? Development of recommended design concepts for the AFCS. ? Design and development of the AFCS including tests on a full-scale mock-up of a load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle. ? Underground fire tests on an ST-2B-LHD vehicle at the Hecla Lakeshore mine Casa Grande, Arizona.

Conventional Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) installations for monitoring CO, CH4, O2 and air-velocity throughout underground mines are usually relegated to a modest 3-5 mile extent and with data communication speeds confined to a ponderous 1-5K baud range. New US-MSHA and state regulations require fast reporting of unsafe conditions, and the old 20-30 minute updates are no longer acceptable. To communicate farther and faster has always been a problem, because data reliability degenerates with excessive distances and high speeds. Because of this, very large mines often resort to costly optical-fiber media, using expensive OF cables and repeaters to obtain the necessary coverage. This entails high initial cost, as well as high maintenance and downtime costs to repair or replace broken optical fibers. Rel-Tek has pioneered with its DX-Bus communication data highway, which uses inexpensive twisted-pair telemetry cables, which can now communicate well into the 20-mile extent of the largest mines -- normally a brick wall for low-tech AMS systems. This extended range, enables the use of twisted-pair cables and provides a low cost alternative to OF systems. This paper discusses the DX-Bus, and its latest accomplishment, the ?B-LINK,? a unique high-speed communication repeater that maintains the 19.2K-Baud data rate. On-going innovations to our workhorse Millennia-DX computer software have kept pace with this extra speed/distance phenomenon, resulting in a dually-optimized AMS package: both hardware and software. Cost savings are substantial, and at no sacrifice of reliability ? nearly always at 100%. Sensor updates are measured in seconds, not minutes and hours. Twisted pair copper cable is cheap to purchase and install and a breeze to maintain. Rel-Tek uses the B-LINK's wide branching capabilities to enable the AMS to extend 20-miles both far and wide. Actual experience in large US coal mines -- both longwall and continuous mining operations -- confirms the large mine performance. The ventilation and safety benefits to the mining industry are immeasurable.

During the second year of its existence, the Ore-Testing Section has actively prosecuted work in the standardization of testing methods, in conducting routine tests and analyses for other Government agencies, and in the determination of recommended processes for the treatment of representative ores from mining districts. Close cooperation has been maintained between the members and units of this Section and those of other Sections, J. A. Woolf and J. B. Clemmer have continued to act in an advisory capacity and R. E. Head has contributed valuable assistance in the microscopic examination of ores and metallurgical products that did not respond readily to standard treatment methods.

The stripping of iron-laden solvent with hydrochloric acid in the iron-removal step of the clay-hydrochloric acid process for the extraction of alumina from calcined kaolinitic clay results in a loaded ferric chloride stripping liquor. Treatment of this stripping liquor at boiling with calcined kaolin to form insoluble Fe203(s) and a dilute A1C13 solution was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to characterize process problems and to aid in sizing of solids-liquid separation equipment. Variables identified as important in the chemical reaction were calcined kaolin particle size, ratio of calcined kaolin to FeC13, and reaction time. These parameters were tested for significance and their interactions investigated. Fine calcined kaolin (-65 mesh) at a greater than 1:1 mole ratio of contained acid-soluble A1203 to Fe203 equivalent of the FeC13 in the stripping liquor required less reaction time than coarser (-16 mesh) material. Solids-liquid separation of the reacted slurries by both settling and filtration requires flocculation.

Treatment of Gold-Bearing Oxide High-Clayish Ores The analysis of modern state of treatment technologies of gold-bearing oxide high-clayish ores showed that the main method applied both in Russia and abroad is sorption leaching and heap leaching with preliminary granulating. The use of any of these processes depends on many factors including average gold grade, site and area of a deposit, clay content and etc. The two processes are often used at the same deposit. In this case, rich ores are treated according to a plant technology, poor ores and ores with cut-off grade are treated with heap leaching. Both technologies possess their own advantages and disadvantages. A plant technology is characterised by high recovery with higher capital and operating costs at the same time. Lower recovery during heap leaching can be attributed to an unstable quality of ore granulating due to both technological and weather conditions. In case of poor high-clayish ores, the use of a combined ore treatment is possible and profitable. It includes the ore disintegration and a clayish fraction treatment by using a heap leaching. In this case, capital and operating costs reduce in comparison with a plant technology and the recovery increases in comparison with heap leaching. Sometimes it reaches a plant recovery. These ores possess special features. As a rule, gold is associated with ore fraction, so it liberates readily from the association with ore ore-forming minerals even with relatively coarse grinding explain their high solution velocity in a hydrometallurgical cycle. Clayish ores are characterised by high sorption activity to gold cyanide complexes as well as extremely low velocity of filtration and thickening of slimic pulps at the same time. The paper describes the options of oxidised high-clayish ores treatment, such as, a plant technology (PIP and CIP process), heap leaching and a combined technology (disintegration, heap leaching of a crystalline fraction and sorption cyanidation). The obtained results were used when selecting a treatment technology and during construction of a plant for oxidised high-clayish ores treatment.

The The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) is continuing to investigate the behavior of fully grouted roof bolts in the weak roof rock of the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM). This paper describes the results of three studies: • A series of 24 pull tests of bolts installed fully grouted and overcored to leave 12 inches of grouted bolt. The tests compared the pull-out performance of offset-head roof bolts with that of standard 5/8-inch bolts; • A second series of 24 tests that compared the pull-out loads obtained by bolts installed with 1 ft of resin (a Short Encapsulation Pull Test or SEPT) to that of fully grouted bolts overcored to leave only 12 inches of grouted bolt, and; • An investigation into the pressures generated during the installation of fully grouted resin bolts. All of the bolts installed and pulled were overcored and removed from the roof after the pull tests to allow inspection of the resin. The first study found that there was no significant difference in pullout load between the offset-head bolts and the standard bolts. The second study, comparing the SEPT bolts and the partially-overcored fully grouted bolts, indicated that SEPT can significantly underestimate bolt anchorage grip factor, suggesting that the SEPT is a conservative measure of actual bolt performance. Significant loss of resin to cracks in the roof was observed in the bolts overcored in the SRCM. The third study explored one possible explanation for the resin loss, high pressures generated during bolt installation. These tests employed bolts installed in strain gauged steel tubes. The results confirmed that significant pressures (greater than 4,000 psi) can be generated during bolt installation. The results of the pressure tests, combined with the observations of resin loss in bolts installed in the SRCM, suggest that under some circumstances resin loss and under-encapsulation could take place and lead to degraded bolt performance. Glove fingering was observed in all recovered bolts to various degrees. The limited comparative data suggested that the effect of glove fingering ranged from slight to moderate. Complete mixing of the resin was observed on all of the 40 bolts recovered (28 fully grouted and 12 SEPT). Australian and U.S. resins were compared and the Australian resins were observed to have much smaller catalyst compartment areas and lower resin viscosities. These differences are suggested as potential explanations for occasional resin mixing problems noted in Australian resin bolt installations.

"The major Archean gold deposits in the Red Lake greenstone belt, which have produced over 374 million grams of gold since 1930, occur near the top of the lower komatiitic to tholeiitic mafic to ultramafic metavolcanic sequence. The upper calc-alkalic mafic to felsic rocks form three discrete and separate ediftces overlymg this lower sequence.The gold deposits are classified according to their stratigraphic or lithologic associations into:1) mafic-volcanic-hosted deposits;2) felsic-intrusive-hosted deposits; and3) stratabound deposits.Group 1 and to a lesser extent Group 2 deposits occur within zones of alteration several square kilometres in extent. The nature of this pervasive alteration can be characterized by comparison of petrochemical data from the altered rocks and their fresher equivalents some distance away. The altered rocks have substantial addition of SiO2> CO2, K2O, As and Sb and subtraction of Na20, CaO, MgO and total Fe. Cr, Ni, Co and Zr appear to have been relatively immobile. Hydrothermal alteration and gold deposition probably accompanied early fumarolic activity and continued during subsequent deformation the metavolcanic sequence, with gold eventually being mobtltzed and concentrated into major vein structures to form the present orebodies. The smaller Group 2 deposits formed by emplacement of felsic intrusions into already altered, anomalously gold-bearing mafic metavolcanics, with the heat from the intrusions setting up parasitic hydrothermal systems which mobilized the gold and deposited it along with minor sulphides in fractures in the cooling intrusions."

The Dirtlow Rake vein deposit, which is up to 12 m thick, contains a range of paragenetically linked replacement mineralisation styles typical of many Mississippi Valley-type deposit environments. The main ore zone lies within the solution collapse breccia domes, the more southerly of which has recently been well exposed, allowing its relationship to the associated mineral-hosting structures to be studied. The domes were largely formed during early silicification, propagated by dissolution collapse and infilled by subsequent fluorite-barite mineralisation. The location of pipes and pervasive replacement was also controlled by early silicification. Structurally controlled bow tie shears were formed as a result of fluid access at fracture-bedding plane intersections. The nature and distribution of the mineralisation styles indicate that the degree of fluid access, residence time of solutions in contact with the wallrock and susceptibility of the limestone to silicification each played a major role in dictating mineralisation

Ore-pass hazards are a significant safety problem in US underground metal mines. From 1975 to 1995, nearly 75% of injuries during pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes were related to falls of broken rock or the use of hand tools. Risk assessment methods are being used to identify the most probable causes of ore-pass failures and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning or safety reduction. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in the laboratory and by field testing, with data from test ore passes compared with mine data to characterise true system behaviour. Computer modelling using closed-form solutions, finite element analysis and a newly developed particle flow code are being use to predict loads from ore and waste flow and impact. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts may be much less than expected, as a result of damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics

This paper discusses the geotechnical condition of bedding shears and small- and large-scale faults and shears in Archean banded iron formation (BIF) bedrock, based on observations of core and televiewer images. Information that can be collected includes the orientation of defects, infill thickness, strength and material type, defect shape and surface roughness.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may be critical to slope design where performance is structurally controlled with bedding dipping out of a wall. The intensity of development of the bedding shear is a useful indicator of the amount of shearing a bedding surface has been subjected to. This can allow for engineering judgement to be used in adopting peak or residual shear strengths along defect surfaces when developing the design.The spacing and continuity of bedding shears may also contribute to the blockiness and degradation of a rock mass where the structural orientation is otherwise favourable. Additionally the condition, thickness and strength of infill of major fault structures can affect slope design and performance, depending on orientation.Comparison of the condition of structures observed in core with the corresponding in situ televiewer image has been made to assess what characteristics are most accurately captured by each technique and whether the additional information gathered from using the televiewer technique is justified by the cost. The question of whether the data collected by a televiewer is sufficient to ultimately replace the need for core is considered.CITATION:Baxter, H and Eggers, M, 2013. There are a number of hurdles that must be negotiated in order to design an effective gold ore treatment facility such that the expectations forming the basis of project economics are valid and can be achieved in practice. Selecting samples based on geometallurgical context, performing and interpreting testwork relevant to the selected process flowsheet are essential considerations towards achieving this aim. This circular is the second of a series presenting methods employed in solving the technical problems encountered in the production of sand and gravel. The first paper3 discussed the methods use in prospecting and exploration. This one teals with the problems involved in bringing a raw prospect to the production stage and considers the various methods of development and the Factors affecting that development. Later publications are planned to present and discuss methods of recovery and treatment. The recovery of sand and ravel from natural deposits and their preparation for market involve a progressive sequence of operating steps or processes. Each step or process presents its own peculiar problems which require different angles of mental approach, methods, and tools, but all are more or less dependent on the step or process which precedes or follows.

Mineral sands dry plants consist of a large number of repetitive unit operations with significant transport delays, in the form of stream pipes, conveyors and elevators. As part of the P255 mineral sands sponsorship and using the JKMRC developed conductor/non-conductor (CNC) gauges, control loops have been implemented at the multi-duty dry plant of Cable Sands Limited at Bunbury. This paper describes the loops for kV control on a rougher high tension roll machines (HTR). The options available are product grade control and ratio control using the JKMRC CNC gauges, which measure the percent conductors in a stream. The purpose of control is to stabilise the circuit operation against disturbances such as atmospheric and feed disturbances.

[An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. "Drilling and blasting are fundamental operations in the mining cycle and constitute an important component of the mining costs. Problems associated with improper drilling and blasting practices can create losses of several millions of dollars per year. For this reason, a Blasting Technology program was initiated in 1984 at the Noranda Technology Centre (NTC). In this paper, advances made at NTC in drill and blast technology are reviewed. Impacts of drilling and basting for Noranda are assessed in terms of dilution and ore losses. Future challenges are addressed. IntroductionUp to 1997, Noranda was a diversified natural resources company that operated in three sectors: mining and metallurgy, forest products, and oil and gas. The company employs more than 33 000 people in operations and sales offices around the world. Today, Noranda has returned to its roots in mining and metallurgy. This paper reviews the existing and state of art knowledge for electronic waste (e-waste) recycling. Electrical/electronic equipments (EEEs) which are unwanted, broken or discarded by their original users are known as e-waste. The main purpose of this study is to provide a review of e-waste problem, give e-waste management strategies and introduce various physical e-waste recycling processes with special attention towards extraction of both metallic values and nonmetallic substances. The hazards arise from the presence of heavy metals (e.g. Hg, Cd, Pb etc.), brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and other potentially harmful substances in e-waste. Due to the presence of these substances, e-waste is generally considered as hazardous waste and may pose significant human and environmental health risks if improperly managed. This review paper describes the potential hazards and economic opportunities of e-waste. First of all, an overview of e-waste/printed circuit board (PCB) components and substances are given. Current status and future perspectives of e-waste and waste PCB recycling techniques are described. E-waste characterization, dismantling, liberation, classification and separation processes, are also covered. Manual selective dismantling after desoldering and metal-nonmetal liberation at −150 μm with two step crushing are seen to be the best techniques. After size reduction, mainly physical separation processes employing gravity, electrostatic, magnetic separators etc., which are commonly used in mineral processing, have been critically reviewed here for separation of metals and nonmetals. The recovery of pure metals from e-waste after physical separation can be performed by pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical or biohydro metallurgical routes, which are not covered here. Suitable PCB recycling flowsheets for industrial applications are also given. E-waste recycling will be a very important sector in the near future from economic and environmental perspectives for both developing and developed countries. Recycling technology aims to take today’s waste and turn it into conflict-free, sustainable polymetallic secondary resources (i.e. Urban Mining) for tomorrow. Recycling technology must ensure that e-waste is processed in an environmentally friendly manner, with high metal/nonmetal recovery efficiency a lowered carbon footprint. Taking into consideration our depleting natural resources, this Urban Mining approach offers quite a few benefits; it provides a substantial secondary resource, while also ensuring that the environment is kept free from harmful toxins in e-waste. This results in increased energy efficiency and lowers demand for mining of new raw materials.

Waitemata Tectonic Event(25 Ma ago) created a subduction system from the northeast of Northland, causing: (1) the emplacement of the Northland Allochthon (24-23 Ma) which provided argillaceous limestone and serpentine to Northland, and minor copper to both there and East Cape (located off Northland then); and (2) Northland volcanism (from 22 Ma), which lacked economic mineralisation. The Kiwitahi Tectonic Event (1714 Ma) caused: (1) a realignment of volcanism - from coastal western Northland, to west of the Hauraki Plains (Kiwitahi); (2) a start to the migration southwards from Northland of (a) the Alpine Fault System towards Marlborough today, (b) subduction towards Cook Strait, and (c) volcanism towards Taranaki-to-Bay of Plenty (initially through Coromandel, Kiwitahi, and offshore west coast); and (3) a start to rhyolitic volcanism & associated hydrothermal activity. The latter caused epithermal mineralisation, providing in Coromandel the best known North Island metalliferous deposits. Andesitic volcanism has been active in both of these two contrasting, subequal belts since 22 Ma. Rhyolitic volcanism and hydrothermal activity was wholly restricted to the eastern Marshall Belt, with an abrupt limit to economic mineralisation at the Volcanic Divide (within Hauraki Plains) and a major change there to basaltic volcanism of the western Searle Belt. The Kaimai Tectonic Event (5-1.5 Ma) caused: (1) a temporary reversal in volcanic migration in the Searle Belt, and a duplication of rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity at Waihi (Marshall Belt); (2) the rotational rifting of both the Central Volcanic Region (by 30¦) and the Hauraki Rift (10¦), causing major curvature of the North Island and New Zealand, and the transfer of the offshore subduction system from Coromandel to East Coast; and (3) an effective end to Coromandel mineralisation. Post-Kaimai Volcanism (1.5-0 Ma) included: (1) andesitic volcanism in the Searle Belt, yielding the western coastal titanomagnetite deposits; and (2) andesitic, and rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity in the Marshall Belt - the latter providing geothermal energy, sulphur, and pumice/perlite deposits. Post-Subduction (Intraplate) Volcanism (10-0 Ma) developed in a steadily expanding northwest region of relative tectonic quiescence, as subduction and its volcanism migrated southwards. Intraplate volcanism was predominantly basaltic, providing excellent aggregate; but less common rhyolitic & hydrothermal activity provided geothermal potential and mercury at Ngawha and at Puhipuhi, and halloysitic clays of extreme brightness elsewhere in Northland. This volcanism has reached as far SE as Mayor Island, providing an early New Zealand mineral resource - obsidian.
