Professionals, technical and non-technical, working in the mineral and metal commodity industries need to understand the concept of sustainability and its implications for the industry. Undergraduate courses have not done this well in the past. Much has been written in this field, and there have been great advances in understanding. However, much of what has been published is superficial and sometimes misleading, and there is as yet no coherent, single account that can serve as an introduction or overview for mineral industry graduates. This paper presents an outline which can guide readers in developing an understanding of the topic and its relevance to their work. Key references are provided, particularly those accessible on the internet, which will serve to introduce the reader to the important principles and understandings. The guide should also be useful to academics preparing students to work in the minerals and metal production sectors.

In the light of the discovery of the new super-conducting YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO), reactions in the Y2O3¬CuO-BaO system at 1300°C was investigated. The search was for any new phase that may be formed in the system at 1300°C (only 950°C reactions are known so far). 35 mixtures of different compositions were prepared and heated at 1300°C. No new phase was obtained. It was found that YBCO is decomposed at this temperature and Y2O3 and BaCO3 are the major components in the solid obtained after firing in air. However, on cooling the melt slowly and annealing at 950°C YBCO reforms. Such reactions on cooling might have implications on processing of the superconductor YBCO for practical applications as well as on its crystal growth by flux method.

Research into potential applications of spouted bed electrowinning (SBE) in the zinc industry was conducted, in a collaboration between our two organizations. The main system investigated was zinc from acidic sulfate electrolytes. However, SBE can be extended to other electrolytes, or recovery of other elements. Electrolytic tests were carried out at the 0.01 to 0.1 m2 scale. Spouting behaviour has been studied at a larger scale, approaching a size suitable for an industrial unit cell. Much of our work was carried out using a micro-porous separator (Daramic®). However, we have also shown that ion exchange properties can have a controlling effect on the process chemistry, electrochemical efficiency, and plant flowsheet. In initial 0.1 m2 scale electrolytic tests, design and engineering issues for scale-up were identified. We review the major achievements, promising areas for application in the zinc industry, current status, and remaining barriers to development of SBE technology.

Fused salt electrolysis is used extensively in the primary extraction of metals (electrowinning), in the refining of metals (electrorefining), and in the formation of coatings (electroplating). In the case of rare earths, fused salt electrolysis competes with nonelectrochemical processes to make the same products. However, fused salt electrolysis has the potential to produce these metals in a variety of technologically useful forms: thin films and epitaxial layers, powders, and a variety of nonequilibrium structures. The theory and practice of fused salt electrolysis as it applies to the extraction, refining and plating of rare earth metals are described. The potential of fused salt electrolysis to synthesize advanced materials containing the rare earth elements is assessed.

The design of the economically most profitable and technically most feasible smelter process gas handing and treatment as an integrated part of the total metallurgical process is discussed and exemplified, with alternative flow sheets including material and energy balances, investment and operating costs. Retrofitting and de-bottlenecking of existing gas handling lines wil1 be described and exemplified. Methods of increasing total gas handling line availability will be described.

Clean processing of copper converter slags for reclaiming cobalt and copper could be a challenge. An innovative and environmentally benign approach for recovering metal values from such a slag was developed in the present work. Curing the slag with sulfuric acid, without re-smelting or roasting as currently practiced in the industry, made it amenable to leaching, and more than 95% of the cobalt and up to 90% of the copper was extracted, together with iron, by water leaching, leaving silica behind in a residue. Copper in the leach liquor was recovered by cementation with iron, and the dissolved iron crystallized as ferrous sulfate monohydrate. Cobalt in the pregnant solution rich in iron was recovered by either cementation or sulfide precipitation. Chemical and mineralogical characterization of the slag and its products were examined and compared to determine the nature of the changes occurring during curing and leaching. Operating variables were also investigated and optimized.

Experimental rheology data are needed to produce design criteria for mass and energy transfer processes. Large throughput plants operate under continuous flow mode. The capital cost is determined by the accuracy of the rheology data used for design. The operating cost is dictated by the energy required to sustain the flowing conditions of various process slurries. Typically, rheology investigations are carried out during the final stages of metallurgical testwork, which is too late to set the design criteria for the pilot plant. This leads to increased testwork cost, and sometimes lowers confidence in the quality of the data produced. In addition, the engineering and feasibility studies are often delayed because of the lack of pertinent rheology data. One of the objectives of this paper is to emphasize the importance of timely planning and execution of the rheology study, which is shown to be a critical component of the overall testwork program. Various applications are discussed, including elaboration of process and equipment design criteria. In this paper, the emphasis is placed on gold and nickel laterite hydrometallurgy applications.

Emission of sulfur-containing gases causes most adverse impact on the natural environment in the process of nonferrous metals production. Under the conditions of Arctic regions, in particular in the region of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex (Russia), this problem requires a special approach taking into account potential economic and socioeconomic consequences. By reducing the iron sulfide content of flotation concentrates by using new flotation reagents inhibiting pyrrhotite flotation and by applying advanced process flowsheets for flotation it is possible to increase the nonferrous metals content of flotation concentrates by 5% or more along with a corresponding reduction in SO2 formation during their subsequent pyrometallurgical processing. The ways used to resolve the environmental problems in the Norilsk region in the process of nickel and copper production, are based on the improvement of methods for elemental sulfur recovery from metallurgical off-gas by non-conventional techniques, the sulfur recovery from metallurgical gases by production of liquid sulfur dioxide and the technology for pyrometallurgical treatment of sulfide concentrates without SO2 formation. Another opportunity is the development and commercial introduction of hydrometallurgical technologies for treating copper-nickel sulfide ores.

The major problem with the Nd-Fe-B magnet is its low operating temperature, i.e., the coercivity decreases so rapidly with increasing temperature that the practical maximum operating temperature-is only 100 °C. Meanwhile, it has been reported that nitrogen addition can drastically increase the Curie temperature of both R2Fe17 and RTiFe11 (R = rare earths). A reasonable question is, then, can one see a similar effect in Nd-Fe-B system? Experiments have been conducted to examine how magnetic properties of Nd-Fe-B magnet are affected by the nitrogen addition. Our results show that part of Nd2Fe14B maintains its original crystal structure and no substantial change in To, due to such N2 treatment is found. However, part of the sample decomposes into a-Fe and, possibly, Nd nitride as a result of nitrogen treatment.

This paper aims at presenting numerical results showing the impact of different parameters on the limitation of entrained slag from ladle to tundish during the ladle drainage. These parameters are process parameters, slag properties or external actuator acting directly on ladle slag behaviour. Numerical simulations based on the use of the CFD Fluent software illustrate the vortexing and non-vortexing phenomena appearing during the ladle drainage. This numerical tool validated by experimental data acquired on water model has been applied to industrial configurations. It shows that the slag properties (viscosity, surface tension?) or some modifications of parameters (slide gate opening, geometry of the ladle bottom?) have a positive effect on the slag entrainment and also on the decrease of the ladle heel. Finally, the modelling of the behaviour of an external actuator injecting some gas in the region of the nozzle reveals interesting possibility for reducing slag entrainment from ladle to tundish during the final steps of the drainage.

Among the methods proposed for spent activated carbon regeneration, the most acceptable is, thermal reactivation, because in this case the existing equipment for manufacture of activated carbon can be adapted for this purpose. In order to conduct the process of thermal re-activation of spent activated carbon directly at gold mills, a full-scale drum-type furnace with external electric heating has been developed, i.e. EPV-300 model with a throughput rate of 50 to 120 kg/hour. Its use ensures restoration of the adsorption properties of carbon up to the level of fresh activated carbon with an insignificant (by 0.7%) decrease in strength and with a high (95% to 97%) yield of reactivated carbon. During the recent years, activated powder carbon has been extensively used in flotation processes for treating polymetallic ores at ore treating plants to improve recoveries of main metals (copper, lead, nickel, etc.). Especially large volumes of activated powder carbon are used at the Talnakh concentrator of the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Complex in Russia for absorption of residual flotation reagents from recycled water in order to ensure efficient selective separation of minerals with similar physical and chemical properties.

Recovery of gold from thiosulfate leachates can be accomplished by adsorption of the gold thiosulfate complex by a strong base resin. Two of the most significant impurities that can decrease this gold adsorption are tetrathionate and trithionate, which are produced as oxidation products of thiosulfate during gold leaching. This paper investigates gold adsorption on a strong base resin (Purolite A500C) as a function of the concentration of these impurities. It is shown that concentrations of tetrathionate and trithionate as low as 150 mg/L can decrease gold loading by an order of magnitude, and that of the two ions, tetrathionate has a stronger detrimental effect. The resin and solution gold concentration profiles were successfully fit using a Freundlich isotherm, which further shows the strong effect of tetrathionate. To counteract the decrease in gold adsorption by tetrathionate, a novel process was proposed. Sulfite was added to the solution to oxidize tetrathionate to trithionate, and a nitrogen blanket was added to ensure that no further oxidation of thiosulfate could take place. It is shown that by incorporating this process, gold adsorption was doubled from both synthetic and real gold thiosulfate leachates.

Creating technology, securing patent rights, and managing a patent portfolio are time-sensitive and dynamic activities. Agreements should be in place with technology partners (employees, contractors, joint venture partners), prior to embarking on research and development projects, so as to mitigate future disputes over patent rights. Technology partners should be educated on patent law basics so as to be mindful of patent bar triggering events. Accurate records must be maintained to capture information relevant for preparation and filing of patent application, including subject matter, names of inventors, and invention date. Developed inventions should be evaluated for whether to file for patent protection, delay patenting until technology is further developed, maintain trade secrecy, or effect deliberate public disclosure. Once decision is made to file for patent protection, time is of the essence, and application for patent protection should be filed as soon as possible, as many countries award patents on a "first-to file" basis. Decisions on where to file are made having regard to potential competitive advantages versus cost considerations, and can be delayed by taking advantage of priority rights recognized in patent legislation of most countries. Once patents are granted, competitors must be policed for potential patent infringement, and legal action may be necessary to prevent patent infringement.

The great potential of Brazil for the agricultural production makes our country a generator of agro industrial residues. In this context, the solid-state fermentation appears as a technology that shows alternative ways for those residues, adding values to these raw materials, through the production of substances of industrial interest, besides reducing the possible environmental problems. The main objective of this study was to apply the bovine fat residue associated to the garden grass for the fungal lipase production. Initially, 75 microbial cultures were isolated from garden grass samples after incubation of the mixture with bovine fat. From these cultures were selected the filamentous fungi, whose lipase production abilities were evaluated. The isolation and the selection were accomplished by using a differential culture medium containing Tween 80 as inducer substrate of lipase production. The colonies with lipolytic potential were detected by the presence of white precipitation haloes on the agar. With agro industrial residues the best lipase producer fungus was identified as Penicillium sp in 6 days of solid state fermentation. The crude enzyme obtained was tested in transesterification process for the biodiesel production.

Human health risk assessments can be used in mine permitting, and are frequently used to investigate areas of potential contamination and as a basis for remediation decision making. While some states and US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Regions have their own guidance for the conduct of human health risk assessments, USEPA Headquarters guidance and the underlying science are changing and advancing rapidly. Even outside the US, USEPA guidance can affect risk assessment costs and conclusions, which in turn can affect cleanup costs or permitting options. This paper summarizes recent USEPA guidance and scientific evidence related to human health risk assessment for mining sites. This paper is designed for non-risk assessors, and so focuses on the potential applications and implications of the new guidance rather than the mathematical and theoretical details.

In the blast furnace, the reduction of iron oxide and gasification of coke occur simultaneously. It is well accepted that the gasification reaction controls the simultaneous reaction. Therefore, it is important to develop highly reactive carbonaceous materials. It is also known that the reaction is accelerated catalytically with the addition of some materials. In the present work, the catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the gasification of graphite and coke was examined. The catalytic effect of iron, nickel and CaO on the reaction rate of graphite was noticed The effect was larger at lower temperature. At 1373 K, the effect almost vanished. The effect was larger in the order of CaO, iron and nickel. The reaction rate of de-ashed coke increased by the addition of iron and nickel. The effect of iron was larger than that of nickel. The effect was larger at higher temperature, which was contrary to the case of graphite. The reactive surface area increased also by the addition. Therefore, the catalytic effect on reaction rate might be attributable to the increase in the reactive surface area.

In the Mitsubishi smelting furnace, copper concentrate, silica sand and water granulated slag from the converting furnace are injected through the process lances, together with oxygen enriched air, into the melt. Because bath smelting is used, the rates of particles/melt and gas/melt reactions are high enough and therefore tine grinding of the solid materials is' not necessary. Among these reactions, the dissolution rate of silica sand is the slowest and limits the overall reactions in the smelting furnace. Information on the dissolution rate of silica sand plays an important role for design of a new furnace. Theoretical calculations of the dissolution rate .of silica particles have been reported elsewhere. The authors conducted cold model experiments and could verify the calculation. In this paper, the dependence of dissolution rates of particles on the gas blowing rate, particle size and solid penetration depth in the bath is discussed.

Mineral processing plants typically procure a range of industrial services from contractors. Their satisfaction and value received is directly affected by how the services are procured, rationalized and delivered. Conventional purchasing strategies often focus on price rather than on optimizing the service relationship between supplier and customer. The nature of this relationship may have the greatest potential to reduce costs and enhance production. It has been documented that a service involves simultaneous production and consumption. A high degree of customer involvement is often necessary for a successful outcome and the expectations and attitudes of the customer can positively or negatively affect delivery of the service. This indicates that the customer can enhance or diminish their own satisfaction and value received and the supplier cannot act alone for best results. The Optimax? Program for industrial services is a service delivery framework whereby a customer and supplier work together to raise the efficiency of the service exchange. The Optimax? Program is intended to help the customer optimize costs and maximize production by connecting the customer and supplier through shared information and objectives. This paper will review the basic nature of services, provide a couple of examples of conventional procurement strategies for services and outline the features of the Optimax? Program. A Case Study showing recent results from implementing the Optimax? Program will be included.

Nowadays, hard carbides have found various industrial application in the manufacture of cutting and drilling tools as well as metal forming devices. About 60% of the world tungsten production is consumed in the manufacture of hard carbide pieces. Regarding the high economic value of hard carbide components, i.e., Ni, Co, TaC, TiC, and WC, their recovery from scrap species is attracting much interest. In the current research, the cobalt and tungsten content were recovered from scrap cemented carbide pieces through the application of high voltage electrolysis in nitric acid media. By this method, cobalt and tungsten were initially recovered as cobalt nitrate and tungstic acid, respectively. The precipitate of tungstic acid was calcined at 800ºC after being washed twice with distilled water. A pure tungstic oxide was obtained. The effects of current density, electrolyte concentration, speed of agitation, and the surface area of the anode on the efficiency of the electrolysis process were investigated. The optimum conditions of current density of 1500 A/m2, an acid concentration of 1.5 M, and a cell temperature in the vicinity of 60 to 80ºC were obtained. At the optimum conditions, an acceptable rate of collapse for the anodic carbide pieces of about 3.1 g/h was achieved, which remained constant up to the completion of the recovery process without any passivation .

The Demag Electric Slag Cleaning Furnace installed at the Asarco Smelter in Hayden Arizona is one of the few rectangular electric furnaces now operating. The long transition times from charge to tap allow exceptionally clean skims (high recovery); however, the furnace design is complex. Additional Asarco requirements for rapid installation and commissioning further complicated the design. When operating and wear effects accumulated after two years of use, steps were taken to rebuild the furnace with enhanced durability based on the design parameters experience in actual use.
