"This paper gives the overview of different alternatives to recycle the following wastes: slag, dusts, wastes of electric and electronic equipment (WEEE) and auto shredder residues (ASR). Based on modified Bogue calculations, steelmaking slags were combined in order to produce a belite-rich clinker activated with sulphoaluminate. The EAF dusts containing significant amount of metals can be recycled in different ways: The carbothermal treatment and INTECT process are reported. The results obtained from the model of Auto Shredder Residue injection into blast furnace show that ASR can be used as reducing agent in the BF process if certain conditions are met. The particle size of this material must be controlled to ensure optimal gasification of the material in raceway. The non-ferrous contents may affect the pig iron quality, which is difficult to rectify at a later point. It seems the pyrolysis is the most attractive process to handle ASR. The BRGM flow sheet of WEEE treatment is also reported.I. Introduction The activities of human been may generate wastes and by their accumulation during several years, these wastes may have an impact on the environment and on the human health. These wastes can be generated in the forms of solid, liquid and gas. A variety of industrial wastes can be recycled for use as products. There are three ways in which industrial waste recycling occurs: at the facility itself (on-site recycling), at commercial facilities that gather waste streams from several companies (off-site recycling), and at a company that uses as inputs in its production process the waste products of another company. The industries producing iron and steel may generate different solid wastes which are classified in three main categories: 1. Ferrous material (mainly dusts and sludges from gas cleaning), 2. Slags (these by-products are generated from different process stages), 3. Others by-products (including refractories and material generated from engineering activities). According to this review, the most quantity of the metallurgical wastes is deposed. Currently, the public opinion opposes the creation of new sites. This leads to the growth of the waste disposal costs. Such situation reduces the enterprise competitiveness and decreases their market share on regional and/or national and/or world scales. TiO2 and Ti/TiO2 thin films were deposited on a quartz substrate by laser ablation of TiO2 and Ti targets using Nd:YAG pulsed laser. After sulfurization of the TiO2 film in H2S or CS2 gas at 1273 K for I hour, the surface atomic structure was changed. Furthermore, the Tirri02 film was successfully prepared by the subsequent ablation of Ti and Ti02 targets. The morphology and structure of the films were characterized by XRD, XPS and AFM analyses.

Natural rubber/organophilic clay nanocomposites were prepared and characterized. A brown bentonite from Paraiba’s State, Brazil was modified with a sodium salt and treated with quaternary ammonium salt hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The clay in its natural state, after cation exchange with sodium and after organophilization was characterized by XRD, IR, SEM, thermal analysis. Nanocomposite samples were prepared containing 10 resin percent of organophilic clay. The vulcanized samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM. The nanocomposites obtained showed improvement in their mechanical properties in comparison with samples without clay.

This paper initially gives a brief overview of Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited (Zincor). The original design parameters of the Zincor roasters are compared to the current operation, and the requirements for efficient roasting are listed. Roaster operational problems experienced during the early to mid 1990's are outlined. A description of the investigation and the outcome to increase overall roaster availability are given. The history and the development of the use of oxygen at the Zincor roaster operation, with an account of the associated operational experiences, are explained.

The changes that are happening in the world of metallurgy, and with it university education, are generational and require generational responses. Some of the key issues facing metallurgical education and ongoing professional training are explored. What will be required of metallurgical engineering professionals in the coming decades? What knowledge and skills will be needed? How to provide the educational and learning pathways, and how to attract smart young people into this profession? These are issues more readily addressed by tertiary institutions in conjunction with industry; perhaps the greater challenges lie in building and maintaining competencies post-graduation. There is a need to establish and maintain a system that supports graduates and enables them to develop further into competent expert engineers able to successfully address complex engineering challenges.

Also, the future of processing technology will be emphasized.IntroductionThis talk will center on the role of technology as an important component of a business plan for mining companies. I'll attempt to explain how I see technology development as an underpinning of a successful mining company. We will examine an example of a technology that has resulted in a re-birth of segments of the industry, examine a technology life cycle and discuss technology as it relates to ore reserve replacement. Also, we will touch on technology in today's mining company and propose some food for thought for those designers of corporate organizations."

"Product design engineers select from a wide range of materials and combine them into multimaterial product designs. These include various materials (metals and non-metals) which are complexly integrated (e.g. welded, glued, alloyed, layered). The recycling/recovery rate of consumer products are determined by the different materials and alloys used, but also by the particle size and multi-material particle composition after shredding (combination of materials due to design). Eco-design (for recycling) and Design for Recycling (DfR) can only be conducted if the interconnectivity of material/metal in various unliberated materials is accounted for and its effect on material and energy recovery can be linked back to design. This paper will discuss the basic principles of these DfR models and it is shown how these tools (i) are linked Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) software, (ii) affect conceptual design specifications of products, (iii) integrate the complex detail of the recycling system and recyclate quality and hence (iv) make recycling an integrated part of the product system. Furthermore, it is shown how these assessment tools and models can be applied for benchmarking of the recyclability and environmental damage created by the recycling of end-oflife consumer goods in order to e.g. (i) provide the (original) equipment manufacturer with knowledge and solutions to support product stewardship and Extended Producer Responsibility; (ii) create awareness of the consequences/benefits of design, products and recycling systems to manufacturer, designer, legislator, recycler etc.; and (iii) assist the consumer in their choice of consumer goods from an end-of-life point of view.IntroductionA first-principles basis is required in order to be able to simulate and predict the recycling/recovery behaviour of products facilitating Design for Recycling (DfR) and Eco- Design. An integrated copper production complex includes mining, milling and smelting facilities which are usually at or near a common site, and sized to complement one another in capacity. There may also be an electrolytic retlnery serving the complex, but not always totally dedicated to its production. Mines and mills without co-owned smelters are not usually considered integrated. The first marketable product of an integrated complex is blister, or in some cases electrolytically refined copper. The nature of integrated operation brings together all of the environmental issues associated with copper production, but currently operating and newly planned facilities are required to anticipate these issues and meet stringent regulations. Older complexes, however, may have legacies of 50 or more years of operation unencumbered by current levels of environmental strictures: nevertheless, they must be remediated. Using examples from closure and remediation of the mining and mineral processing facilities in the Upper Clark Fork River Basin of Montana, the authors review some of the problems encountered since CERCLA's1 enactment in 1980, and the solutions to those problems, bearing in mind that not all of the problems and solutions were technical. Much has been written about the mines of Butte -the "Richest Hill on Earth" as it was known in its day and the mills, smelters and refineries they spawned. These facilities comprised an archetype of the integrated copper complex: from ore to metal in facilities serving and depending on one another. Many great stories of technological innovations and business triumphs have been told about Butte and Anaconda's mining history and the place The Anaconda Company occupies in that history. However, relatively little has been written about the final days: 25 years during which the once-great complex was closed, and the remnants of past glories were remediated after nearly a century of operation. This paper offers some insights from the real world affecting similar complexes still operating, and, hopefully, lessons for others just starting down the path to final closure.

Pyrite ore concentrate from the Meggen mine (FRG) , which contains about 0 300 400 ppm thallium, is roasted in a fluid bed furnace at 1000 -1100 C to form sulfur dioxide and ash consisting mainly of hematite. Subsequently, the sulfur dioxide is separated from the ash or dust during several steps while cooling to about 250oC. The pyrite ash fractions show decreasing grain size down to 5 pm, a pH-decrease down to 2,4 and a marked enrichment of arsenic and thallium by a factor of 12. In the final fraction, the hot electroprecipitator dust of the dump (EGR), minute crystals of thallium-containing jarosite can be detected by analytical transmission electorn microscopy (TEM). Under oxidizing, acid conditions, jarosite may be a possible "reservoir mineral" for immobilizing thallium.

Electrochemical capacitors are charge storage devices. They bridge the gap between dielectric capacitors and batteries in terms of energy and power density. Electrochemical capacitors are classified into two types, electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) and capacitors based on pseudocapacitance. In EDLC, charge is stored at the interface between electrode and electrolyte. Carbon is considered to be prime electrode material for EDLCs due to its many favorable characteristics. In this study carbon materials are derived from thermal decomposition of catechol- formaldehyde polymers and are studied as electrode material for electrochemical double layer capacitors. Carbon electrode surface is characterized using NOVA 1200 gas sorption analyzer. It is also characterized using XRD and SEM. Carbon electrodewaselectrochemically characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV). A highest capacitance of 110 F/g was observed in 30 wt% H2SO4.

Electrocrystallization studies were conducted in a concentrated acid-copper electrolyte to determine the influence of chloride ions and glue on copper nucleation and on the structure of thin copper layers. Electrochemical experiments allied to SEM and XRD examination were performed to characterize the mechanism of nucleation in the presence of additives at 65°C. Results indicated that most of the copper nucleation from a 83 g dm-3 Cu2+ solution, with 140 g dm-3 of H2SO4 is achieved in a matter of milliseconds, Although the presence of chloride and glue, at the concentration levels tested, does not seem to substantially modify the nucleation mechanism, the morphology, nuclei density and the copper film structure and orientation are changed by the presence of additives and by electrolyte stirring.

"In this paper, the chemical composition, the content and the leachability of heavy metals in dredged sludge are tested and analyzed. It is shown that the leachability of Pb and Cr exceeds the leaching toxicity standard, and so the dredged sludge is considered as hazardous waste and must be solidified. The effect of solidifying the dredged sludge by the hydraulic ash-slag cementitious composites is studied, and it indicates that the heavy metals can be well immobilized if the mass fraction of the dredged sludge is appropriate. The heavy metals are immobilized within the hydraulic ash-slag cementitious composites hydration products through either physical fixation, substitution, deposition or adsorption mechanisms.IntroductionDredged sludge is classified as a hazardous waste because it usually contains concentrated heavy metals and chlorinated organic compounds, as well as soluble salts, and is also composed of very fine particles. Moreover, inorganic pollutants are typically associated with soluble compounds, which are, therefore, highly leachable from dredged sludge when dredged sludge is contacted by a liquid medium[l1. Thus, dredged sludge must be stabilized in order to reduce its environmental impact on the final disposal site. The frequent means of dredged sludge disposal used include(!) Chemical stabilization (2) acidic extractionChemical stabilization is translating mobile heavy metals into low dissolution and low toxicity form through chemical reaction. The commonly chemical medicaments are sodium hydroxide, soldium sulfide, thiourea, EDTA. But Zhao et al [ZJ found sodium hydroxide is not fit for Pb stabilization, the other three are effective, but the chemical properties of sodium sulfide are not stable, thiourea and EDTA are very expensive, and so it is very difficult to apply them. Moreover, because of the complexity of heavy metal conformation and dredged sludge composition, it is very difficult to find a cheap and prevalent stabilization medicament in point[31 ."

Copper and cadmium metal has been recovered from dilute (3 X 10-4 mol/dm3 ) chloride solutions by ion flotation with dodecysulfate, followed by electrolysis. This approach should facilitate treatment of effluents too dilute for effective direct electrolysis. . The adsorption density of metal dodecylsulfate complexes on bubble surfaces was estimated from surface, tension data, and compared well with experimentally-observed metal removal kinetics, and ultimate recoveries. Copper and cadmium were recovered by electrolyzing the foamate, using steel wool cathodes and a graphite anode. The stability constants of the copper and cadmium dodecysulfate complexes are estimated, and used to analyze the thermodynamics of electrolysis. Dodecysulfate was unaffected by the electrolysis process, and hence could be recycled to ion flotation. A conceptual flowsheet for an overall effluent-treatment process is presented.

"Gas-stirring ladle treatment of liquid metal has been pointed out for a long time as the processing stage mainly responsible for the inclusion population of specialty steels. A steel ladle is a complex three-phase reactor, where strongly dispersed inclusions are transported by the turbulent liquid metal / bubbles flow. We have coupled a population balance model with CFD in order to simulate the mechanisms of transport, aggregation, flotation and surface entrapment of inclusions. The simulation results, when applied to an industrial gas-stirring ladle operation, show the efficiency of this modelling approach and allow us to compare the respective roles of these mechanisms on the inclusion removal rate.IntroductionThe reduction of the weight of high performance materials together with the improvement of mechanical properties and the increase of the recycling of used metal are new challenges which emphasize the importance of metal cleanliness. Ladle treatment of specialty steels has long been described as the secondary metallurgical process mainly responsible for the non-metallic inclusion derived from the deoxidation process. The treatment is accomplished by blowing argon through one or more porous plugs for the purposes of desulphurization, minor composition adjustments, and inclusion removal. Gas injection is applied on routine basis to achieve both the stirring of the liquid bath (thermal and chemical homogenization) and the entrapment of the inclusions by the bubbles (flotation). Furthermore, the turbulence produced in bubble swarms enhances the probability of inclusion collisions and makes aggregation the first mechanism for particle removal. The physical processes involved in gas stirred ladles are numerous and complex owing to the three dimensional and multiphase (metal-gas and inclusions) nature of the reactor. Despite these difficulties, the population balance equations can be implemented in CFD code11'21 and combined CFD-PBM (computational fluid dynamics - population balance method) models are investigated for steel ladle processes13'41 and produce very promising results in terms of inclusion removal efficiency."

"The pyrometallurgical method of recycling car batteries suffers from a potential for air pollution violations, which prompts the desire for a viable hydrometallurgicaJ alternative. Several Processes have been proposed, including leach-electrowinning routes using HBF4 and/or HzSiF6 based electrolytes, along with anodes of PbO2 on inert substrates.A study has been carried out to evaluate the proposed systems, with the intention of demonstrating a six month life of an electrolyte-anode combination. The work, which focused on the use of HzSiF6, has indicated that there was no acceptable anode, and has lead to the development of a technique to produce smooth, glassy, adherent coatings on graphite, and to the development of an anode composed of a series of copper cored graphite rods.The paper will present results on leaching and electrowinning experiments, as well as the description of a flowsheet for a pilot plant that will be used to produce one tone per day of refined lead from spent battery paste."

"The principal objective for finishing surfaces is to protect and/or to decorate them. This can be achieved by adding or removing material from the work surface. The addition of aggregated material is called coating or recovering. In this work, mecano-chemical techniques are investigated for surface finishing. For these techniques, barreling or polishing by the friction method will be used. These are the cleaning or finishing processes most used for great volumes of small pieces. These methods improve the surface finishing by eliminating burrs, sharp pointed, tool marks and crusts of casting. They are used to clean metallic pieces, ceramics and polymeric materials. The process is based on rubbing or friction by abrasives. The pieces are arranged in the barrel with an abrasive and an additive (water or chemical additive). The machine produces a rotating movement on the pieces. When the abrasive passes against the surfaces of the pieces, it produces an action of rubbing and impact that cleans the surfaces. The rubbing action is developed when the upper layer of the charge slides to the lower extreme when the barrel rotates. The barrel can be hexagonal or octagonal to facilitate the sliding of the charge. The barrels can be between 15 to 120 cm in length and they can have almost any diameter and velocity of rotation. There are several types of barrel: individual, multiples, and multiple compartments. The barrels are rotated using a wheel spindle or rolling pins, that the can ride horizontally or be tilted to produce an additional movement of the charge.IntroductionShot penning is a cold method in which compressive effects are induced on an exposed surface of a metallic piece, by the impact of a rain of shots directly on the surface of the metal, at great speed under controlled conditions. This differs from cleaning with the help of air, because even when shot penning cleans the surface of the metal, this function is incidental. The main purpose of shot penning is to increase the resistance of the piece to fatigue. The process has other applications: raises the tensile strength and decrease corrosion fracture."

"The major source of environmental pollution in urban areas is the transport sector and its impact on human health and the greenhouse is preoccupying. In many works of literature is monitored the pollutants in urban cities, however in specific areas such as universities, they are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this work is to monitorate the gaseous pollutans in a bus terminal at Santa Cruz do Sul University-UNISC and to develop a control framework of the air quality. Six points were selected for monitoring, being one of them inside a bus. The monitoring of CO, HC and CO2 were carried out on arrival and departure of the bus. Preliminary results conducted in a day of spring showed that the most critical condition was during the night shift, where the concentration of CO (200 ppm) was the highest, caused by the vehicles increase, due to the larger number of students.IntroductionThe first major global assessment of climate change science in six years has concluded that changes in the atmosphere, the oceans and glaciers and ice caps show unequivocally that the world is warming. The report released on February 2, 2007, the first of four volumes to be released this year by the IPCC, also confirms that the marked increase in atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases is the result of human activities.The transport sector has become by far major source of environmental pollution in urban areas. The continual traffic growth has raised concerns over the impact of traffic emissions on human health and urban environmental quality, and has fuelled the demand for a coherent regulatory framework for the management of traffic, air quality and emission at urban level, as well as at regional and national scales.In Greater Metropolitan São Paulo, Brazil, fossil fuel combustion in the transportation system is a major cause of outdoor air pollution (Miraglia&El Kouri, 2007). In China several studies on gaseous emissions are being conducted by F. Costabile&Alegrini, (2007), developed a study on the pollutants in the city of Beijing suggesting methods for the control of pollution.The results obtained from the estimation of the atmospheric pollutants emitted monthly in Campo Grande/MS, Brazil, by buses and minibuses, which employ diesel, biodiesel or natural gas as fuels showed that the substitution of diesel by biodiesel would diminish the emissions of pollutants (Kozerski&Hess, 2006)."

"The paper contains the results of studying about modification of pyrite and arsenopyrite specific surface and porosity at their thermal decomposition. The studying of specific surface was carry out by B.E.T. – adsorption of nitrogen at his boiling-point. In our work were using the electron-microscopical, X-ray structure analysis and chemical analysis. There was established that the decomposition of pyrite and arsenopyrite accompany by increasing of pores volume from 0.303 · 10-3 to 1.23 · 10-3 at increasing of pyrite degree of decomposition about 41 % and then decrease about 0.131 · 10-3 m3/g at degree of decomposition near 100 %. The surface area of pores increase from 0.31 to 1.085 m2/g with following lowering due to enlargement and confluence of minor, small pores. Increasing of porosity accompany with increasing of particles windage that appear the result of heightened dust-furnace partially decomposing pyrite and arsenopyrite particles by air flow from furnace reaction zone. This explains heightened contention of sulfide sulfur in roast dust of sulfide concentrate. 1. INTRODUCTION As a result of ore base exhaustion of ferrous and nonferrous metallurgy at metallurgical treatment are involving more complicated and less qualitative ores. Magnetiting ores content considerable quantity of pyrite complicative the technology of iron extraction. At the same time the pyrite concentrates wining at dressing content different nonferrous metals in industrial quantities. Extracting ores of nonferrous metals are contenting considerable quantity of arsenic at the present time. Extraction of base metals from complicated raw materials demands new technologies. Arsenic contenting in ores is necessary to utilize (waste burial) in more ecological compatible form. Arsenic on acting metallurgical and chemical enterprises from technological cycle is withdrawing in the form of arsenate – arsenite cakes, burial of their may lead to seriously ecological problems as times goes by. In Kazakh National Technical University is carry out the cycle of researching by pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenate – arsenite cakes treatment with the object of arsenic withdrawal in sulfide form – in more ecological and safe form and with the object of preparation of initial ore raw materials to following pyro- and hydrometallurgical treatment. As a result of sulfidizing of arsenate – arsenite cakes by pyrite are forming the volatile arsenic forms and pyrrhotite of variable structure."

During the last years, Chile has been the largest copper producer, either as concentrates or cathodes. Copper obtained via pyrometallurgy is produced by seven smelters, which have carried out modernization plans to increase smelting capacity or to achieve environmental regulations established in the Chilean legislation. Thus, the present work updates technological innovations in smelters, environmental regulations and presents solutions for S02 handling, particulate matter and arsenic. Also, the authors emphasize the important role of CODELCO Chile, the most important state-owned copper company, in developing technologies such as El Teniente Converter and El Teniente Slag Cleaning Furnace.
