The utilization of computer based monitoring systems for fire detection in underground coal mines has grown significantly in the past seven years. In 1984, an annual MSHA survey identified a total of 38 systems being used in U.S. underground coal mines, while a 1990 survey indicated the number has risen to 112. The applications for mine monitoring have also changed according to the annual surveys. From April 24 to June 21, 1990, investigations were conducted by personnel of the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, in cooperation with Coal Mine Safety and Health, concerning the installation and operation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines. These investigations were conducted to gather information concerning the ability of the AMS to detect fires and heatings, false and nuisance alarm frequencies, information related to system maintenance, and information related to employee training on system operations. This paper addresses current applications of the systems, fire and heating identification rates, application of systems in dieselized coal mines, system maintenance, and employee training requirements. While deficiencies were identified in some applications, results of the studies and survey indicate the use of atmospheric monitoring systems can be effective in identifying mine fires and heatings.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

Since startup of the Syncrude Canada Ltd. (SCL) oil sands facility in northern Alberta 15 years ago, numerous improvements have been made in the ore conveying system and equipment. The unique nature of the material conveyed coupled with the wide range of environmental conditions encountered results in a number of unparalleled challenges. Most of the improvements have been brought about through the use of detailed field evaluation. Numerous publications are available that detail the various aspects of conveyor technology, and a significant list of papers are presented each year adding to the knowledge in this field. In the area of power formulae in the mid- 1970s, there were two major sources for use in the design of the SCL conveyors: the Conveyor Equipment Manufactures Association Handbook, 1988, and DIN Specifications 22101: Belt Conveyors for Bulk Materials, 1982. These sources were supplemented by the knowledge of the belt and conveyor equipment vendors and from the general literature. The SCL design was based on the CEMA formula. Hecla Mining's Lucky Friday Mine, located beneath the town of Mullan, ID, has been shaken since the 1960s by many deep underground rock bursts. The largest rock burst carried a magnitude of 3.5 on the Richter Scale. It occurred in 1969 when all of the stopes on a level approached an upper level at the same elevation. After that, a stair-step pattern was used to give the mine's levels more of an "arch." The article is an account of one of the more ferocious bursts to hit the miners of the Lucky Friday. I say "miners" instead of "mine" because I was there and it was a very personal experience for me. I had been working at the Lucky Friday for six years. During that time, I had heard and felt thousands of air blasts. In fact, in the early spring of 1986, the mine was experiencing as many as 1000 air blasts an hour, of different intensi¬ties, of course. Most of them sounded like popcorn popping. During the 1980's. the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed new regulations for the use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen", and that reductions in exposure to exhaust pollutants would reduce excess risk. During the same time, the Bureau of Mines tested new emission control technology to minimize diesel emissions. The objectives of this paper are to discuss the major issues regarding diesel exhaust emissions. especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) , and to highlight emission controls that will be available. DPM is a potential health threat because it is respirable in size and is composed of nonvolatile carbon with adsorbed or condensed compounds. These compounds include potentially mutagenic or carcinogenic hydrocarbons such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfates. DPM contributes to the degradation of air quality in mines with typical mean concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 mg/m3. In addition to adequate ventilation, control of DPM can be achieved by implemention of improved work practices, regularly scheduled engine maintenance, and emission controls.

If the emission of methane into any particular area of an underground coal mine remains constant, then the calculation of ventilation requirements is relatively simple. This is also true if the ventilation system is recirculatory. However, the emission of methane into a working area can vary considerably. There is always a risk that the ventilation will not be able to dilute the emission of methane to acceptable levels, because there are often short-lived peaks of emission which are very large. The ventilation design must therefore consider what is an acceptable level of risks and calculate the airflow requirements to meet this level. The acceptable level of risk can be calculated by examining the historical variation in methane emission into the area to be ventilated. For example, consider that an acceptable level occurs when methane emission peaks only exceed the capability of the ventilation one day in twenty. Then, from the history of methane emission, it is possible to calculate the necessary ventilation requirements. This method has been used since the early 1980s for conventionally ventilated districts. This paper examines the application of this technique to districts ventilated by recirculatory ventilation.

The Indian Mining sector is subjected to a number of trends including call for global transition towards the route to sustainable development. Several regulations were enacted by the Government departments, from time to time, in order to identify the problems faced by the mining industry, including small-scale mining operations and to suggest appropriate mitigation measures in the form of environmental standards and certifications. During this process, a pursuit of sustainable development is regarded as an important area responding to socio-economic conditions, priorities and thus guides eventually corporate policies and practices. Thus, there is a need to formulate strategies for sustainable development. Based on these strategies some environmental indicators were developed in order to track down the progress and to evaluate its success. A case study pertaining to a group of iron ore mines in North Goa and Chromite mines in Sukinda, Orissa was selected for this study. Base line environmental data has been generated in the respective study sites. A core set of environmental indicators monitoring environmental progress based on the P-S-R model pioneered by OECD is linked with indicators for assessing the integration of environmental concerns.

The development of a successful restoration strategy for any drastically disturbed site is dependent upon a thorough understanding of the chemical properties of the spoils or mining wastes that need to be stabilized. The majority of revegetation research in the USA has been conducted on coal mining spoils and coal preparation wastes, and this paper will focus on these two materials and their modification for plant growth and water quality protection. Potential acidity derived from the oxidation of pyritic (FeS2) materials is the most important chemical factor that must be estimated and managed, but physical properties such as severe compaction or excessively low water holding capacity are also very limiting. Conventional soil fertility tests are very difficult to interpret for mine soils because of their tendency to extract elements from fresh, unweathered surfaces that are soluble in the extract, but not plant-available. A wide array of waste products such as sewage sludge biosolids and coal fly ash are readily available for use as mine soil amendments, but their utilization must be carefully matched against the needs of the post-mining plant community and their potential water quality impacts.

From the surface mines of Ptolemais basin 48 samples of Pliocene lignite were collected. The samples were analysed using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INNA) and Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) for determining the concentrations of 39 trace elements. The contents of sulphur and ash and the loss of ignition were also determined. The chemical affinity of these trace elements was estimated based on 40 correlation diagrams between the elements concentrations and the ash content of the collected lignite samples. According to the obtained results, 18 elements have inorganic affinity (Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Sc, Th, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Yb, Lu, ?n, Ba, ?, Sn, ?r) and 10 elements have inter-mediate affinity (As, U, ?r, Pb, Cu, Sb, Sr, S, Ni, V). The remaining 12 elements (Au, Ir, ??, Rb, Se, Ta, W, Tb, Ag, Cd, Bi, Be) exhibited concentrations below the detection limit. Thus, they were impossible to be classified in a specific affinity group. Based on the classification of these trace elements and sulphur in inorganic and intermediate affinity groups some useful conclusions are drawn regarding their behaviour during lignite combustion and lignite ash utilization and disposal processes.

INTRODUCTION Los Angeles is one of the world's largest cities in area with a span of 70 km between its north and south limits. The population in the Los Angeles Basin exceeds 11 million people. Los Angeles is second only to New York City in density of U.S. urban population and it operates one of the largest city bus fleets in the world, 2,500 buses. After many years of planning and many consultants' reports, it is planned to initiate a 30 km (18.5 miles) starter line subway -- the "Wilshire Corridor" (Figure 1). Construction is to start in 1985. In several locations, subway routes ultimately will skirt or cross old oil fields, which may cause gassy tunneling. Of particular note are the La Brea Tar Pits, which overlie a part of the old Salt Lake oil field. Tunneling through tar sands for about 3 km will be unique for subway construction and will occur on the starter line. Experience with previous gassy tunnels in the greater Los Angeles area shows that tunnels can be completed safely if precautions are taken. Abundant ventilation is the main solution, although other precautions are discussed herein.

The operational paradigm of mining industries is shifting from ?optimal profit for the financial stakeholders? to a new concept compatible with sustainable development ethics: ?maximize economic and social returns at the local, national and global levels, while avoiding negative environmental impacts?. The number of stakeholders concerned by mining companies has grown significantly over the last few decades, and the role of local communities and civil society is now acknowledged by the mining companies adhering to the sustainable development ethics. ?Involve me? is becoming a key to maximize the returns the mining industry can provide to sustainable development. As the world?s major importer of many mineral commodities, several coming from developing countries facing severe short-term problems, the European Union (EU) is an important stakeholder and has a responsibility in supporting actions to strengthen corporate and public governance capacities. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the drivers leading to the development of sustainability indicators and to propose, within the 6th European Framework Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration Activities (FP6), an European-level initiative to develop sustainability indicators adapted to the mining industry and its population with relevant data.

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

A geophysical investigation can provide valuable geologic information needed to characterize sand-and- gravel deposits and can be an attractive complement to more common characterization methods such as drilling. Although such investigations have been conducted already, a comparison of the different geophysical methods used in these investigations apparently has never been done. For this reason, a study was initiated by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the advantages and the limitations of different geophysical methods when used to evaluate alluvial sand-and-gravel deposits. The study is focused on those geophysical methods that are commonly available, because these are most likely to be used by industry. Furthermore, the study is focused on surface geophysical methods. Heretofore, four different methods have been evaluated. Three of the four methods-time-domain electro-magnetic (TEM) soundings, frequency-domain electro-magnetic profiling, DC-resistivity soundings-are similar in that they all measure the electrical resistivity of the ground with depth. Ground-penetrating radar, however, maps changes in the dielectric permittivity and for the electrical resistivity with depth. For all, four methods, the objective is to relate the measured physical quantity to the stratigraphy of the alluvial sediments.

GENERAL BACKGROUND The first mention of the presence of bauxite in the mesozoic series of north-west Sardinia (fig. 1) is owed to Oosterbaan, a Dutch geologist, who carried out a geological survey of the area in the ninetten thirties. A more detailed study of the mesozoic series was attempted in the fifties by Pecorini and other, who concentrated particularly upon the stratigraphy of the bauxitic horizons, through examination of the various outcrops. In the sixties a pining company, Monte Amiata S.p.A., turned its attention to a section of the deposit outcropping near Olmedo and, considering it to be of some promise, carried out prospecting works consisting essentially of various trenches, some bore holes, a few adit and a. layout plan for the preparation and execution of trial exploitation. The results, although positive, did not convince the company's shareholders to continue the exploration. This report, which is intended as a new contribution to knowledge of the Sardinian bauxite deposit, takes into account the information acquired not only from a drilling prospection begun in 1979 in connection with the SOMIT-PROGEMISA joint venture, but also the results of structural studies and numerous chemical, mineralogical and

Demand for nonfuel minerals depends in large measure on economic activity, which rose in each quarter of 1985. However, despite 1.7 million new housing starts and a 7% increase in motor vehicle production, many domestic metal mining operations experienced continued difficulties as a result of import competition, greater use of newer engineered materials, emphasis on multi-unit housing, and downsizing of motor vehicles. Recognizing the continued difficulties of the domestic metal mining industry, many corporations made major efforts to retrench and rationalize - selling, closing, or spinning off less profitable operations, renegotiating labor contracts, and inviting increased participation by foreign firms. About 15% of US energy was imported in 1985. This included $52 billion worth of crude oil and refined products, adding significantly to the overall merchandise trade deficit of $149 billion. With the exception of a few large-bulk, low-value raw materials, most minerals move relatively freely in world trade. The strong dollar encouraged imports and made exporting more difficult US nonfuel minerals trade deficit totalled $17 billion. The US continued to rely on imports for many important strategic minerals in 1985 (see accompanying Table). Increased pressures for protection included major mineral products such as steel, ferroalloys, and copper. But President Reagan, in his Feb. 1986 "Economic Report to the Congress" stated: "Our international trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets." He also stressed the need for fair trade and more open markets internationally. The National Critical Materials Council, created by law in the latter part of 1984, was activated in the latter part of 1985. Its first public hearing was held in January 1986. The Council is to review the nation's materials posture and advise the President on such matters. Compared with 1984, the value of US raw nonfuel mineral output rose 2%, to $24 billion. This supported the production of $244 billion worth of processed materials of mineral origin. Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - fell 4% to 81 Mt (89 million st). Consequently, domestic iron ore production fell to 49 Mt (55 million st), about 97% pelletized. Iron ore imports fell 7% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity fell 4% to 117 Mt (129 million st). Pacts with 16 leading steel exporting nations have been negotiated in an effort to reduce import penetration of the domestic market. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about 40% capacity. The US mined no manganese or chromium. Only a small quantity of ferronickel was produced from domestic laterite mining in Oregon. Molybdenum production increased slightly to 49 kt (54,000 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, also fell slightly to 1.1 kt (1200 st) of contained metal. Even the domestic aluminum smelting industry suffered reverses as high stocks and low prices reduced production 16% to 3.5 Mt (3.8 million st). Similarly, imports of bauxite fell 7% and alumina 10%. Production of magnesium metal fell 6% to 136 kt (150,000 st), while titanium metal production remained unchanged at 22 kt (24,000 st). Copper mine production was unchanged at 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Copper refinery production fell slightly to 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st). Lead mine production rose 24% to 400 kt (440,000 st). Zinc mine output was down 10%, to 225 kt (250,000 st). Refined lead production increased 28%, to 510 kt (560,000 st). Primary slab zinc production fell 5% to 240 kt (260,000 st).

"Name your poison," wrote Forbes, Jan. 3, 1983, in an article describing the plight of much of the mineral industry as it entered the new year. "To ask which (mining) segment is better these days is almost like asking which of several stones would make a better life preserver." "The scene has seldom seemed darker or apparently less promising," said the Mining Journal in June 1982. And the Northern Miner described the year as the third in a "3-year drought which has completely dried up (company) coffers." Thus, 1982 became the worst year for much of the mining industry since the Great Depression. Low prices, commodity surpluses, output reductions, layoffs, temporary and permanent closures, and financial losses made headlines as the general recession continued to hurl blows at an industry facing strong foreign competition, increased government regulations, and plummeting market demand. At fault were tight US monetary policies and the resulting high interest rates that, while forcing inflation to slow, also threw the economic wheels of the country into reverse gear. Automobile production, housing starts, consumer durable sales, and capital spending all fell dramatically. US industrial production fell about 8.5% in 1982, with the GNP dropping by 1.7%. Production Value Not a single mineral escaped this recession. According to the US Bureau of Mines, US nonfuel production value dropped for all but four out of 21 metals and 14 out of 44 nonmetals. Production quantities increased for only gold, lead, and zirconium among metals and for only six nonmetals. Total nonfuel mineral production value dropped a whopping 21% from 1981 levels, the largest decline since 1938 and the first since 1971. Production value was estimated at $20 billion. Metal commodities showed heavier losses than nonmetals-37% vs. 12%-because of their link to depressed automobile and construction industries. Prices From peaks in early 1980, prices of precious and base metals, ferrous and nonferrous metals, and virtually every mineral dropped to 30-month lows in June 1982. Gold dropped to $9.64/g ($300/oz) compared to a high of $27/g ($850/ oz). Silver was quoted below 164/g ($5/oz) versus a $1.61/g ($50/oz) high. Copper was offered at a five-year low of $1.22/kg (55.5¢/lb) compared with a high of $3.30/kg ($1.50/lb). Lead went for 53¢/kg (24¢/lb) versus $1.21 (554). Nickel begged for buyers at $4.19/kg ($1.90/lb) compared to a high price of $7.72/kg ($3.50/lb). Molybdenum was available at or below $8.82/kg ($4/lb), down from a high of $44/kg ($20/lb). Cobalt went for $11/kg ($5/lb) versus $55/kg ($25/lb). Adjusted for inflation, increased currency costs, and currency devaluation, many of these prices are the lowest reached in decades. Financial Profits & Losses Low prices severely impacted companies' earnings, turning profits into sometimes disastrous or fatal losses. Robert Norton, director of the US Bureau of Mines, noting there has been a recession in the mineral industry for years, said, "Profit rates as related to invested capital have been considerably lower (for mining) than those of other industries. Many factors must be considered when performing engineering and construction work for a major minerals project. Dravo's Afton copper smelter in British Columbia illustrates some of the E&C factors considered when setting up this new operation. In March 1978, Afton Mines Ltd., a Tech Corp. subsidiary, began blister copper production at the world's first integrated copper ore mining, milling, and smelting operation to use Top Blow Rotary Converter (TBRC) process smelting technology. This key TBRC smelting element is licensed by INCO Ltd. to Dravo Corp. The TBRC process uses a single vessel of modular design. It rotates for mixing and provides complete processing capability, from concentrate through blister copper. The Afton facility is about 16 km west of Kamloops, a town in south-central British Columbia. To make its operation as economic as possible, Afton officials considered several options for the copper smelter, the first in modern times in the province. Inability to extract precious metals-primarily gold-from the concentrates ruled out hydro-metallurgical processes. The final choice was between a conventional electric furnace/ Peirce-Smith converter combination and the TBRC process. The TBRC process was chosen for its versatility in processing the various Afton concentrates and grades and its 40% lower capital cost compared to the electric furnace converter system. The TBRC smelter -including concentrate slurry receiving, drying, storage, smelting, off-gas cleaning, and copper casting-had an installed cost of about $25 million. In December 1974, a pilot program was conducted by Teck, Dravo, and INCO at INCO's Port Colborne, Ontario, research facility. The pilot program demonstrated the TBRC's ability to smelt, convert, and clean copper slags. After the successful pilot effort, Dravo performed additional research to find an effective fixation system for high grade, intermittent SO2 gases. Once the go-ahead was given, design and procurement for the Afton copper smelter was provided by the Denver Division, Dravo Engineers and Constructors. Commonwealth Construction, Vancouver, constructed all Afton facilities. Afton's single furnace smelter is designed to produce 25-kt/a blister copper in 363-408 kg cake form. The product is sold to England for electrolytic refining. The TBRC process is only one of several innovations proposed by Dravo and chosen by Afton to insure the most modern smelter in North America and meet all British Columbia's environmental restrictions. Conventional smelting methods use a separate furnace for each process step. The TBRC process employs but one furnace. The Afton TBRC vessel measures 6.4 m in length and 4.3 m in diameter. The furnace is supported on a set of motor-driven rollers. These permit the vessel to rotate at variable speeds to 40 rpm. Rotation provides good mixing, high reaction rates, and effective heat transfer from the refractory sides to the molten bath resulting in a low thermal gradient. The furnace can tilt through a full 360° for charging, firing, and pouring. Smelting at Afton is accomplished in sequential fashion. Flotation concentrate and limestone flux are initially charged to the hot, empty vessel. Using the water-cooled, oxy-fuel lance, the initial charge is smelted. Once sufficient molten bath is obtained and slagging completed, the metallic concentrate is charged. INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. A stream sediment (minus 80-mesh and minus 60-mesh panned concentrates) and lithogeochdcal survey for gold did not locate any Triassic-age placer deposits in the northern Wadesboro and southern Sanford basins in North Carolina. A stream sediment geochemical program for uranium funded by the North Carolina Energy Institute did identify one and anomalous site (8.5 ppm U; 5 ppm Th) near Covenington, North Carolina and eighteen possibly anomalous sites (1-1.6 ppm U) . Five of the eighteen samples with uranium levels in the 1-1.6 ppm range have high thorium levels (112-853 ppm) and may indicate a monazite source for the uranium. Gold values as high as .83 ppm in the stream sediments and 9.3 ppm in the panned concentrates were obtained during the survey. Small (<.5mm) flattened grains of gold (1-4 grains) were observed along with coarse kyanite and/or monazite in some of the panned concentrates. A distinctive pattern of high gold values in the sediments was observed in the vicinity of Mangum, N. C. where Minard (13) reported values as high as 2.1 ppm £ram a Triassic lithology. Follow-up gold analyses on over 400 rock samples from twenty-eight exposures near Mangum failed to obtain any high values (<55 ppb). The presence of coarse kyanite, monazite and gold in panned concentrates may be from a source younger than the Triassic lithologies that the streams currently drain or adjacent Paleozoic rocks.

Rend Lake is an Army Corps of Engineers reservoir located in Franklin and Jefferson Counties in south-central Illinois. The lake consists of 20,000 acres of water and 19,000 acres of public access land. The site attracts over two million visitors a year and is surrounded by campgrounds and other recreational facilities. The lake overlies the largest tonnage of low sulfur coal in the state. Coal is being removed beneath the lake from five mines operated by three coal companies. Currently high extraction mining operations are approaching low-lying, environmentally sensitive, and high-use recreational areas. Advanced planning to maximize coal extraction and minimize potential effects of subsidence requires the development of procedures to assess the impact of high-extraction mining on the land use of the area. The Bureau of Mines, the Corps of Engineers, and the coal companies have initiated research to assess the following proposed planning steps to ensure the maximum recovery of the coal resources while minimizing impacts to surface land use: 1) Establish a dialogue between the surface and mineral owners; 2) develop a geographic information system to aid in assessing existing land use and potential changes; 3) assess the potential effects of subsidence on drainage, wildlife habitats, and changes in land use prior to mining; 4) coordinate the mining displacements with surface activities to minimize disruption; and 5) develop appropriate mitigation plans before mining occurs.
