Comminution methods for base metal and precious metal ores have had considerable attention from mine operators, equipment suppliers and design engineers for many years and much of their work has been well reported. This interest derives from a healthy concern with the costs of comminution, often the largest single cost factor in ore dressing of hard ores. Many imaginative innovations have resulted. One notices a trend toward autogenous and semi-autogenous methods, combined with a trend toward very large equipment. Unfortunately, there has been less obvious cost incentive to experiment with softer ores. This is unfortunate because the consequences of inappropriate comminution methods can have an important effect on overall economics by influencing down stream processing and salability of final products. This paper concerns some of the factors to be considered in the selection of comminution methods for potash ores, and gives some specific examples to illustrate some of the principles involved.

Coal cleaning with traditional magnetic separation usually yields unsatisfactory results because minerals associated with coal, such as quartz, clay, pyrite and calcite, are weak-or non-magnetic. Magnetic reagent technology is a new mineral processing technology with the capability to enhance the magnetic property of minerals selectively. This reagent can be adsorbed selectively on minerals through the control of surface chemistry and, thus, result in selective magnetic enhancement. The application of this technology on coal cleaning has been experimentally demonstrated. Good separation results can be obtained at low to medium magnetic field strength. Comparison with other processing technologies is included.

According to Darcy's law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

The selection of the lining profile and the lining material has a great impact on over-all grinding cost and mill throughput. The cost of the lining itself is minor in comparison with media cost, energy cost and the value of the material produced in the mill. The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

This presentation will be a general overview of the Cerrejon Coal Project being developed jointly by Carbocol, an entity of the Colombian government, and Intercor, an Exxon affiliate. The word "Cerrajon", by the way, is simply Spanish for a small hill. There is a distinctive hill near the mine site, and it's the only landmark of any significance. It's shown in Figure 1. So the locals call this area "El Cerrejon", "the little hill." Let me start with some of the highlights of the project, summarized in Figure 2, and then go into more detail later. A four-year feasibility study covered the geology, quality, engineering, construction operation and marketing of coal from this region. This study led Exxon to declare the project as commercial in July of 1980. Then in September of 1980 the president of Colombia gave the government's okay to proceed.

In simpler times, construction was a cooperative undertaking. The frontier tradition of barn-raising is the construction equivalent of the academic ideal of a single student seated on a log with Horace Greeley. In a more complex world, ideals become more elusive. Still, it was only a generation ago that toll revenue bond financed projects generally involved a team composed of investment bankers, engineers, and construction contractors, who all shared a common objective -- to create something useful, at minimum cost and in minimum time, with fair compensation to all involved. In an increasingly contentious public climate, the team has too frequently been splintered into separate camps of owners, engineers, and contractors, who have lost the old objective of creation and have, under the guidance and control of the lawyers, substituted two new primary objectives: 1. To protect one's own skin. 2. To detect and punish culpable negligence of one of the other parties. This process has become so ludicrous that a number of thoughtful observers from all of the camps (including even some lawyers) have come to recognize that there must be a better way to undertake construction works than to use them as wrestling arenas. The road to improved contracting methods starts with mutual understanding of each other's problems and viewpoints. To this end, discussions such as this RETC session make a useful contribution. To

Primary autogenous grinding has been in general use for somewhat over 20 years. During this period there have been many highly successful plants built on this principle, while some others have had problems such as: 1. Not performing as predicted from test work. 2. Highly fluctuating tonnage rates. 3. Mechanical problems. 4. High liner wear. Many of the problems with commercial autogenous mills have resulted from improper sampling and testing of the ore during the development period. It is recognized that the fully autogenous mill is very sensitive to any changes in grindability which may occur in the feed to such a mill. The semi-autogenous mill is somewhat less sensitive, but large swings in grindability of the feed require adjustment of ball charge and this cannot be easily accomplished in a short period of time.

Field criteria are needed to help the prospector recognize a potentially expansible shale, clay, or slate. Certain criteria have proven useful in California even though the physical-chemical mechanisms of expansion are not thoroughly understood. Three conditions must be satisfied before expansion can take place, The raw material must partially fuse at a low temperature (1800-2000°F.), Concurrently a gas must form. The raw material must be sufficiently impermeable to trap the gas within the particle. Low temperature melting, which is controlled by bulk chemical composition, is difficult to assess in the field but most common shale, clay, and slate is suitable in this respect, The presence of organic carbon, the most common source of an expanding gas, is indicated by dark color of the rock, A large proportion of clay-sized particles promotes impermeability; fine grain-size is indicated by conchoidal fracture, The shape of the expanded particle is commonly indicated by the texture of the raw material. Rocks with well-developed slatey cleavage produce accordion-shaped particles; massive rocks tend to form rounded particles. Undesirable materials commonly present with expansible shale include: weathered shale; sandstone and other coarse-grained sediments; and limestone, Weathering, which is indicated by color, reduces or eliminates expansion; therefore, surface samples seldom are representative of the shale found at depth. Sandstone does not expand and will increase the average weight of the finished product, Limestone or particles of carbonate minerals can be actively harmful because they are converted to free lime (CaO) during the firing process, If free lime is present in concrete, hydration will cause expansion of the lime particles which result in surficial ?popouts.?

It will also give you some idea about who Luzenac America is and from where it came. Luzenac America was formed in July, 1992 as a result of the acquisition of the talc assets of Cyprus Minerals by RTZ of the United Kingdom. Cyprus Industrial Minerals was then merged with the other RTZ talc interests under the Luzenac name. Luzenac is a town in the Pyrenees of Southern France -and the home of Talc de Luzenac, RTZ's first talc acquisition. The Luzenac Group is the largest talc producer in the world.

Compared to coal or many metals industries, talc must be considered a small, specialty market catering to niches and dependent primarily on the physical attributes of the mined and processed mineral rather than the chemical attributes with copper, lead or uranium concentrate, the primary objective is the percent metal that ultimately is refined by the smelter, as opposed to the brightness, particle size distribution, trace impurities or morphology. The latter constitute the important determinants of where, how and why talc and similar industrial minerals are used. This paper addresses the talc market-place: where it is, how much of a market there is, who the producers are, available capacity, market growth, and marketing techniques.

"Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives – HydroStar® 4208, DXG-F7® and Cyquest® N-900 – using a potentiostatic technique. The current–time data obtained at 0.16V versus the SHE were analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A/m2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current–time data from the electrolyte without organic additives, and confirmed by SEM images, indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional growth under diffusion control. None of the organic additives studied at a concentration of 2.5 mg/L with 20 mg/L chloride changed the nucleation and growth mechanism, but the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei, leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.IntroductionElectrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high-purity copper metal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O’Keefe, 1992).Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents – traditionally, guar products – are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper nodules and lead to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth and dense cathodes.Recently, the use of polysaccharides, such as HydroStar 4208 and DXG-F7, and polyacrylamides, such as Cyquest N-900, has been reported in commercial electrowinning tankhouses as replacements for guar (Ashford, Clayton and Sandoval, 2012; Robinson et al., 2013; Sandoval, Morales and Bernu, 2010). However, little information has been published on the effect of these new organic additives, especially regarding the nucleation and growth mechanisms of copper electrodeposits in their presence."

"The European aluminium industry, through its member organisation the European Aluminium Association (EAA), initiated a program on sustainable development for the aluminium industry in 2001. The first step involved the development of a set of sustainable development (SD) indicators for the industry, taking into account of the different interests involved and also the different existing conventions. The indicator set was developed during 2001 and 2002 with the assistance of recognised partners, including Wuppertal Institute from Germany and Versailles University from France. As well, both internal and external stakeholder groups were involved in order to validate the indicators. This has resulted in a set of thirty-four indicators used in the first survey exercise. In the survey the EAA, together with the national aluminium associations, attempted to cover all European plants producing alumina, primary aluminium, rolling ingots, extrusion ingots, foil and recycled aluminium -covering approximately 800 plants. The survey used two points in time, 1997 and 2002, in order to start developing a trend for the individual indicators and to measure progress over time. The industry response to the survey was very positive, with a total industry coverage based on tonnage reported of over 80% for 2002 data and 70% for 1997 data. The results also show a solid progress for most indicators and particularly for social indicators such as training performance, community involvement and employees health programmes. The EAA is committed to conducting this as a regular exercise and is engaged in a number of stakeholder workshops in order to present the survey results, to review the indicators used and to also consider adjustments of these based on feedback from stakeholders and experiences from the first data collection."

INTRODUCTION The small mining company faces the dilemma of how to finance the development of its properties because it doesn't have the financial resources to pay for the development costs from its own funds and doesn't have the financial strength which will enable it to borrow the money needed for development. However, with a little imagination and the right set of circumstances, a financing can be arranged for the small mining company. This paper is an attempt to describe the fundamental steps on how such financing can be obtained --in other words--what is required to provide ad- equate capital at a low cost for developing and bringing a mining property into production. Innovative financing follows from this. The basic keys for building and maintaining a successful mining company are "the four M's": Management, Market, Mine, and Money. The writer believes their order of importance is as presented and each is a building block required in order to obtain the type of financing that best suits the borrower and lender. MANAGEMENT Management must be experienced, highly organized, realistic, able to take advantage of opportunities and fulfill promises. Mine financing requires a variety of skills and concentration on the part of management. Management should have a thorough understanding derived from experience in geology, construction, mining and metallurgy and environment, marketing, and financial matters. Management must realistically visualize what will be produced at what cost and truly evaluate the risks associated so the proper security can be correctly designed. Since risk cannot be eliminated, the objective of management is to identify the risk which will be present in a given venture and assess the level of that risk which will be acceptable to the firm. Generally the risk which is present is subject to little or no modification. After management identifies and measures the acceptable risk the firm will proceed in a way that it will be least exposed. Management must determine its long-term objectives and strategies within the context of a constantly changing world. This question must be addressed before examining the sorts of risk which affect the development and operation of a specific property. The compilation and interpretation of "hard data" by competent people is good to a point but the experience and instinct of seasoned individuals are the important factors in management choosing a long-term direction for the corporation. The attitude towards risk greatly affects the goals of the corporation. Major risks in a mining project can be placed in four categories: 1. Market - Price, demand, substitution. 2. Costs - Capital, operating, financial. 3. Regulation. 4. Taxation. The feasibility study for a project is the fundamental tool used in the management of risk. Management should employ an experienced team with an established and well-understood set of ground rules for the preparation and assembly of a feasibility study. The necessary degree of realism is built into all levels of the study and if the project is technically feasible, the company's hurdle rate is then used to discount the base-case project cash flow in order to determine its financial viability. Understanding the geological significance of the mineral deposit is critical. There should be strong interplay among the pure regional geologist, the detailed mine geologist, the mining engineer, and the metallurgical engineer. The collaboration among these different disciplines will yield a feasibility study that is more reliable. The essence of this work must be appreciated and understood by the executives planning the financing. It is vital that they thoroughly understand the risks and make the proper risk assessments to cope with our rapidly changing market environment. Projecting future revenue values is paramount and is subject to much estimation. One way to mitigate fluctuations and the risk of falling prices is by selling production for future delivery. MARKET Since mining is a worldwide industry it is mandatory that bankers be aware of what is occurring in the marketplace, both foreign and domestic. Solvent Extraction (SX) technology has undergone significant refinements including outright process changes to achieve greater copper production rates with lower organic entrainment levels. LIGHTNIN has completed a detailed study aimed at improving on the conventional Holmes & Narver and Davy Power Gas type impeller designs1 by optimizing the mixing through the use of high efficiency pumper turbines instead of making system changes as others are doing. Since each individual installation requires a different design head and flow, LIGHTNIN has developed the R320 "family" of high efficiency, curved blade pumper turbines. These impellers are designed to maximize head and flow while reducing entrainment through lower power consumption, less shear generation and turbulence, elimination of air incorporation, production of the optimum droplet distribution, and lower tip speeds. These improvements also maintain the required mass transfer and copper recovery of the traditional impeller designs. The R320 impeller benefits have been quantified using Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) and proven in multiple domestic and foreign installations at flow rates exceeding 15,000 GPM. Design comparisons of this improved impeller type versus traditional technology impellers in head, flow, power and entrainment are presented for review. In addition, the inherent benefits of axial flow, high efficiency impellers like the A3 1 0 and A6000 in auxiliary mix chambers will be discussed. The high flow, low shear characteristics of these patented impellers provide the necessary dispersion stability for mass transfer while speeding phase disengagement in the settlers due to low power and low shear input.

This paper presents an analytical technique for prediction of the damaged rock zone (DRZ) around a circular drift subjected to an anisotropic stress field (analytical solution exists only for the case of hydrostatic stress field). The method can readily be adapted to micro or personal computers. Stress concentrations around the drift are calculated at the centers of small rock elements, using the analytical solutions for a hole in an infinite plate. Potential failure of a rock element is assumed to be governed by the Coulomb failure criterion. When the failure condition is exceeded for an element, the excess shear stress is transferred to the neighboring elements. Progressive failure is allowed to occur until convergence is obtained. The final configuration of the damaged rock zone so obtained can be used to assess rock support requirements, as well as modified modulus and permeability of the DRZ.

The rocks exposed in the phosphate district are of Neogene age and consist of clayey quartz and phosphorite sands overlying phosphatic dolomite. The Bone Valley Formation is redefined as a marine phosphorite containing primary phosphorite and abundant terrigenous sediments. It contains a Middle Miocene vertebrate and invertebrate fauna and conformably overlies the Hawthorn Formation containing similar invertebrate fauna. A new, unnamed formation, with Pliocene and Pleistocene fauna and containing reworked phosphorite, overlies the Bone Valley disconformably. Its phosphorite is derived from the subjacent Bone Valley by post-Middle Miocene erosion and deposition in stream channels and marginal marine environments. The Bone Valley contains two main types of primary marine phosphorite. Orthocbemical phosphorite, a direct precipitate of microcrystalline phosphorite (microsphorite), occurs as a cement or binder in thin beds. Allochemical phosphorite consists of clastic phosphorite particles that were originally formed as microsphorite on another part of the shelf. Microsphorite was deposited in a very shallow open marine environment which had an abnormally high phosphorous content caused by upwelling currents. The mechanism of deposition is still in doubt, but organisms probably were a major factor. Soon after deposition, microsphorite was indurated, periodically torn up, and the resulting fragments transported and deposited elsewhere on the shelf. These processes account for a great portion of the clastic phosphorite in the Miocene deposits of Florida. The primary fossil skeletal material is of minor importance.

"INTRODUCTIONOne of the key drivers for the selection of a mechanized tunneling method in good quality rock masses is a good excavation advance rate. In order to achieve satisfactory advance rates, a good geotechnical performance of the rock grippers in main beam open tunnel boring machines (TBM) is required, besides other factors related to ground support and the performance of the cutter head.One well known potential issue of main beam gripper TBM is associated with the bearing capacity of the tunnel side walls while crossing fault zones or poor rock masses in general. Such a mechanism is similar to that of footings on rock and perhaps the most common problem associated with gripper performance. Depending on the quality of the rock, the rock under the gripper contact may experience significant damage and crushing (Figure 1), eventually affecting the TBM advance rate due to a lack of tunnel wall reaction/support. Such a mechanism is primarily dependent on rock quality, applied loads and gripper size.In the case of large diameter TBMs (e.g., D > 12 m), a second potential failure mechanism may arise associated with the loss of confinement within a rock pillar between twin tunnels, even in good quality rock but particularly in bedded sedimentary strata. Punching of the rock pillar may develop due to excessive shear along bedding partings and sub-vertical joints (Figure 2), particularly under a low stress environment. As a result, this mechanism is dependent on both the rock pillar width between twin tunnels and stress conditions around the tunnels, in addition to the previous factors described for the first failure mechanism."

The worldwide talc industry has experienced significant changes since the 1980's. Consolidation of companies and operations in Europe, Australia, and North America has altered the face of supply and distribution. Imports of Chinese and Australian crude have increased competition and product options. The number of processing operations without local mines has moved competition closer to the market area. Quality controls related to ISO certification and tighter specifications demanded by the customers have altered the way our mines and mills operate. Ceramics, coatings, and paper applications continue to consume the majority of processed talc.
