Two of Peabody Western Coal Company's mine operations are the focus of this paper ... Black Mesa Mine and Kayenta Mine, both located in Northern Arizona. These two locations are unique for a variety of reasons. ? The two mines have only two customers, both power plants, one the Southern California Edison's Mohave Generating Station near Laughlin, NY, the other the Navajo Generating Station near Page, AZ. Close in proximity, these two locations ships nearly 12 million tons of coal per year. ? Material is shipped to these customers two ways: via a 273 mile underground slurry pipeline, which by the way is longest in the world, and by a 17 mile long conveyor to four storage silos. Product is then shipped via train from the storage silos to the plant sites.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

The study investigates the effects of high-velocity impacts of common mine materials on a reinforced mine seal rated to 120 psi. It found that materials propelled during an underground explosion could generate enough stress to crack or damage seals, even with little visible damage. This highlights the need for careful evaluation of mine seals after any impact or high-pressure event.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, ranging in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µm), -100 mesh (150 µm), and -400 mesh (37µm) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the three coals tested, pyrite and ash -forming minerals were usually rejected best at -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µm) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

If you don't know a gauss from a grasshopper, you may be better off than you, think, particularly if you're an ore dressing engineer charged with the responsibility of selecting magnetic equipment for minerals separation and beneficiation. Gauss is a unit of measure for a magnetic field. It indicates the number of imaginary lines of force per square centimeter or per square inch radiating from a magnet. In discussing the strength characteristics of a magnet, we have come to speak of a magnetic field of 800 gauss, for example, meaning 800 lines of force per square centimeter. Gauss became the standard for selecting drum type separators many years ago under an arbitrary set of circumstances. The standard has continued to this day even though magnetics applications engineers have long considered it inadequate. The configurations of the older gauss meter were such that the most accurate and convenient readings on a drum type separator could be made at distances greater than one inch. So, an arbitrary distance of two inches was established and that two inches became the standard. Since then, it has become commonplace to specify magnetic strengths for drum separators according to average gauss readings at two inches; for example 500 gauss average at two inches, 750 gauss average at two inches and so on, even though gauss readings at two inches have much less to do with the separating and beneficiating function of a given application than was formerly believed. The standard was adopted as a means of gauging the strengths of electromagnetic drum type separators, for they were the only ones around at the time. These machines were usually designed with no magnetic considerations other than that the material to be separated should be agitated vigorously and the magnetic fields should be deep and strong. Drums built this way performed well enough, so it seemed logical to measure their magnetic strengths. Hence, gauss at two inches. Now, new improvements in magnetic techniques have made average gauss measurements at 2 inches positively obsolete.

The important carboxylic acid components of tall oils were tested individually as phosphate flotation reagents. These included C18 unsaturated fatty acids and C10 to C18 saturated fatty acids and resin acids. These experiments were conducted to evaluate such factors as the degree of unsaturation, hydrocarbon chain length, isomeric form, side-group modification, and cyclic structure. The effects of mineralogical characteristics on flotation response also were considered. The results of this systematic evaluation provide guidelines for selecting efficient substitute reagents and also provide fundamental data for further research on improved flotation technology.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

Kwanyin Tunnel is presently the longest (7.7 km) railway tunnel in Taiwan. Due to heavy railway traffic, a pass-by station will be built inside the tunnel to increase the traffic flow. Since the concentration of toxic gases released by the locomotives may reach dangerous levels, a research program was conducted for the purpose of designing a ventilation system which could dilute and/or remove the toxic gases to maintain an acceptable pollutant level. The program consisted of two parts. The first part was field measurement during which the concentrations of pollutants and wind velocities were measured at various points inside the tunnel to acquire basic data regarding ambient air quality, piston effects for the different types of trains, and existing ventilation conditions. Weather data (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind direction and velocity) were gathered at many stations, both on the surface and inside the tunnel. The amount of pollutants released by each type of locomotive for various conditions were also measured. The second part of this study involved establishing mathematical models for predicting the air quality of the various proposed ventilation systems. Three different models were used for this work. The first one is a piston effect model which assumes that the gases and air undergo immediate mixing inside the tunnel. The second one is also a piston effect model which assumes that the diffusion ability of the gases is zero. The third one is a conventional ventilation model which was used for natural and mechanical ventilation conditions. From the result of field measurement and mathematical model studies, a ventilation system was chosen with consideration of both ventilation effects and construction costs.

An overview of the history of mining technology, both past and present, shows that some of the new concepts being successfully applied have changed the reserve categorization and are having an overall impact on production. Past coal mining operations in the eastern coal fields, and especially in Appalachia, extensively utilized stripping with the predominately applied contour method. As a result, vast mountainous areas have abandoned benches left behind by past mining operations. While thicker seams previously stripped were usually mined by underground or mountain top removal methods, thin seams beyond technical or economical limits were left intact after contour mining had reached the ultimate height of the wall. These thin seams quite often contain high BTU, low ash and sulfur coal that makes them attractive for a secondary recovery due to the market requirements. Secondary highwall recovery has obvious potential and is economically attractive; however, with the present state of industrial experience and lack of analysis of site data, a trial and error approach is used by operators.

Introduction Very little attention normally is given by the experts, or the public at large, to the fact that the majority of the oil that has been or will be discovered within the U.S. remains in the ground. The inherent limitations of oil production through surface wells, either by primary or secondary techniques, will result in a total of over 300 billion bbl of oil left in the ground after completing production by standard petroleum techniques in currently producing or producible fields. This reserve represents some two-thirds of the original quantity of oil discovered in place. Recent work by a number of groups has shown that there is strong economic justification for extracting this remaining oil by mining and processing techniques. Table 1, taken from 1977 API reports, demonstrates the oil left in place at the end of the conventional petroleum production cycle in then-known fields within th’e U.S. Possible targets for oil mining operations include (1) oil remaining in place in fields and pools that have reached economic depletion by current petroleum production methods and that are not amenable to economic recovery by conventional petroleum industry techniques; (2) oilor bitumen-saturated rocks not normally considered by the industry to constitute producible reservoirs, such as shales and diatomites; and (3) asphalt- and bitumen-impregnated rocks. Economically Depleted Fields A more detailed examination of the depleted fields shows that estimates of oil remaining in place after primary, secondary, and nondestructive tertiary recovery can vary widely. There is significant evidence, however, that more than half the estimated original oil in place (OOIP) remains in the reservoir after all petroleum extraction techniques have been applied. If one compares the sum of past oil production and estimated remaining producible reserves with the API estimate of total discovered OOIP as of 1975, it becomes apparent that for the U.S. as a whole, 67070of the 00IP will remain in place at the end of the

In open pit mining every effort is made to maintain as steep a pit slope as possible. Pi t slope angles are influenced by numerous factors some natural that are amenable to limited or no control at all and other mining technology related where a greater degree of influence can be exerted by the engineer. One such area where control is possible is the method of drilling and blasting in the pit. This paper discusses the influence of blasting techniques on the economics of pit slopes and demonstrates how balanced blasting can be used with advantage to pit wall control and improve fragmentation (thus reducing material handling costs). Microprocessor based instrumentation to monitor drill and blast performance has also been described.

Cobbing, as used in this; paper, refers to coarse dry magnetics separation. It is applicable when, by its practice, plant cost can be reduced or the value of its products increased by the removal of a barren or lean reject or a high grade final product. This paper attempts to describe cobbing as it is now being practiced, and also the problems that are of concern to the operator and design engineer. In preparation, 16 plants were contacted, all of which were very cooperative with their time and data.

In Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking, dust emissions are collected in a baghouse to prevent their escape to the Environment. This fine dust, predominantly iron oxide, also contains oxides of various other metals introduced into the EAF from the scrap charge. For example, mixed or galvanized scrap brings with it zinc, lead, and small quantities of cadmium which preferentially accumulate in the collected off-gas dust. Stainless steel scrap brings chromium into the charge, some of which also makes its way into the baghouse dust as hexavalent chromium-containing oxides. Because many of the contained heavy metal oxides are water-leachable, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has listed EAF dust as a hazardous waste which, as of August 8, 1988, cannot be 1andfi11ed without first being treated. Moreover, beginning August 8, 1991, all dusts with zinc concentrations of 15% or greater will be required to undergo high temperature thermal treatment to remove the heavy metals prior to any further disposal. This deadline represents several EPA-granted time extensions to the original requirements; extensions which were granted to allow for further development of process technologies.

The Carr Fork mine is located approximately 50 kilometers southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Bingham or West Mountain District, adjacent to the Bingham open pit copper mine. Applied geology at Carr Fork, by Anaconda Minerals Company personnel, includes detailed geologic mapping and sampling of underground workings, logging and sampling of drill core and cuttings, and the preparation and posting of geologic maps and cross sections for geologic interpretation, ore reserve calculation, mine operations, and long range planning. Accurate and easily understood graphic recording of Carr Fork geology is essential for optimum use by operating and engineering personnel. The design and implementation of exploration, development and definition drilling programs, research into geological spatial relationships, and analysis of structural complexities of the Carr Fork deposit are also integral parts of the applied geology program.

INTRODUCTION The flotation process, in the real industrial complexes, is characterized by the existence of the significant number of the close reciprocal interrelationship between the input and output Darameters. Traditional complexity is appeared with regard to absence of the suitable a priori information for the physico-chemical characteristics of the flotation process. It’s led to needful of taking of consideration about the undefinition which have got the place in the real conditions and application of the statistical methods. The identification of the flotation process through statistical methods is conception of the more-stages procedure, including the collection and previous analysis, the choice of the model structure and valuation method, the estimation of the model un- known parameters and the results interpretation. The essential concept for the subject of this paper belongs to the empirical models ("black-box") and deals with optimizing in constant industrial plant process. The offered method envisages the application of process operation data in order to improve the work process or constant accomplishment of better results for the target function in relation to the former achievement. The optimum process solution isn't afixed value under the influence of various factors, but "a moving point" along the response surface and deviates from the scheme solutions. The evolutive planning method constantly "investigates and approaches" the optimum solution for the selected target function. As a matter of fact the expert operates the plant without interrupting the normal work process. The essential concept of method is to attain changes in the standard conditions, but so limited that they will not effect either production or the product. This method is based on statistical concepts and availability of following the risk of error. The possible influental factors for the flotation process (m=l, 2, 3) is following: the metal content in the feed ore; production level (t/h); grinding fineness in the flotation pulp; pH-values; the consumption of collectors and modifiers The possible target functions are: the recovery of plant capacity, metal recovery in the concentration process and concentration quality. The application of the evolutive operativity method in the chalcopyrite flotation- Bucim concentrator, combines the statistical data and the operator's experience in the interpretation and making a decision which adds up to the precise automatic performance of the process. The advantages of this method in relation to the existing procedure for the flotation process are the following: • The method is unexpensive and losses are reduced to the time necessary to collect the data and record them in the computer. This method provides a constant process control and a quality decision which is better than those brought by an ex- pert with great experience ("hit-and-miss method"). • The method also provides incidental data about the effects. • The method should not be considered as a procedure for solving an incidental problem ("crash program"). • The obtained results must be interpreted by an appropriate expert in order to be considered instructive. MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS Taking into consideration the complexity of the enrichment processes it's necessary the application of "black-box" and mathematical modelling. The presence of the indefinite elements compel us towards the both theory of the probability and mathematical statistics. The mathematical statistics by the mineral processing investigation of the valuable raw materials in the last years has had greater signifance and widely spread application. The application of the mathematical statistics methods for the technological pro- cess analysis and the construction of the mathematical models is bound up by the task putting of the automatic control system de- sign (Fisher R. A. 1941, 1949). The statistical analysis in the enrichment processes is applied formerly, especially in the sampling estimation. Contemporary, in the last years is imposed the tendency of mathematical statistics application for the obtaining of quantity characteristics and quantity valuation from the individual influental factors. Above mentioned tendency in the significant level is based by the mathematical statistics development as a mathematical discipline close connected with the technical cybernetics general joining to the investigated object as a "black-box". Another essential factor in the mathematical statistics development is appeared the created mathematical theory of experiments as a new, to some extent, autonomous statistical domain. The theory of experiments has demonstrated exclusively importance for the investigation of the complex more-factorial processes in the chemistry, mineral processing, metallurgy etc. The investigation by the enrichment processes of the valuable raw materials and their management is possible by the statistical method application. In the same time, it's possible to use the wide-spread traditional methods of the statistical analysis, such as the methods of the dispersion, correlation, regression etc. Also, it may be mentioned above all the methods of the statistical planning of the extreme experiments. The more perspective are representatived some cybernetic methods which are based by the probability as an approach in the process analysis, for example, the identify of the ways and forms, the graph application as an additional instrument in the correlation analysis, the dynamic programming etc. The mathematical statistics application in the laboratory investigation scale is connected above all by the experimented material analysis and the compact representation of the obtained results. Jurist, educator and historian Neil Reynolds will be the keynote speaker at the National Mining Hall of Fame's 11th annual induction banquet on Sunday, Oct. 11,1998 at the Pointe Hilton Resort in Phoenix, AZ. Reynolds is Municipal Court Judge for the City of Leadville, CO, home of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, and a fifth-generation resident of the community. His family staked mining claims on nearby Mount Massive in 1862. Judge Reynolds is a fulltime faculty member at Colorado Mountain College, Chairman of the Lake County Historic Preservation Advisory Board and practices law in Leadville. In announcing the speaker, Board Chairman Richard Moolick said seven inductees into the National Mining Hall of Fame will join 138 mining greats previously honored in the annual ceremonies. This year's inductees will be enshrined by Thomas Falkie, president and chief executive officer of Berwind Natural Resources of Philadelphia, PA. Moolick also announced that Jeffrey Clevenger will be the master of ceremonies for the induction banquet. Clevenger is executive vice president of Cyprus Amax Minerals, Englewood, CO and president of Cyprus Climax Metals, Tempe, AZ. Ore at the Magmont Mine in southeast Missouri is extracted by the room and pillar method on two and sometimes three horizons. In 1991, an innovative plan was formulated for recovery of high grade ore in pillars using cable bolts to accommodate spans of more than 27 m (90 ft). A test area was subsequently selected and a recovery plan developed. A cooperative rock mechanics study effort by COMINCO METALS, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the University of Utah was later established. When initially opened in 1968, the planned production rate was about 1,000,000 tons per year. Due to declining reserves, the production rate was decreased to 630,000 tons per year in November 1992. Pillar recovery now accounts for approximately 40%-50% of the mined tonnage and plays a vital role in allowing Magmont to continue to operate.

California's Surface Mining and Reclamation Act (SMARA) was passed in 1975 to identify and protect mineral resources in areas of high land-use conflict and ensure reclamation of mined lands. Under SMARA, aggregate resource availability is quantified and compared to forecasted demand in specific market regions. Fifteen regions studied thus far cover 20,000 square miles and contain 50 billion tons of high-quality aggregate resources which have been legally designated as ?regionally significant?, providing a measure of protection previously unavailable. SMARA reports and State testimony at local hearings have supplied objective information and helped reduce conflict in mine-permitting decisions.

Aiming at characteristics of the soft coal roadway engineering geology and deformation, the exposure research of the soft coal seam, theoretical analysis, numerical calculation and program design were carried out. First of all, according to the disclosure, soft coal seam engineering characteristics and geological conditions in Xinxing coal mine were expounded. Meanwhile, the soft coal roadway bolt supporting axial effect, the bolt supporting transverse effect, the anchorage body mechanics strengthening mechanism and problems such as supporting strength have been analyzed. The paper pointed out that the soft coal with very small cohesive force can form a composite anchorage body under the combined action of the anchor cable group, the W-type steel band and the metal net. The soft coal body in the plastic damage area formed anchorage balance arch with a certain bearing capacity and adapted to the rock deformation, and which played an effective support role in the roof outside the balance arch of the roadway. Therefore, the full-cable support technology was proposed. And then, numerical calculation and comparative analysis were conducted on three schemes of the roadway with non-support, with combined support of “anchor bolt and cable” and the full-cable support. The results show that when the roof is supported by anchor cable, it not only controls the continued increase of the subsidence value of the roof, but also effectively suppresses the convergence amount of the floor heave value and the amount on the sidewalls of the roadway. Whether it is from the stress distribution situation, or the viewpoint of plastic zone scope, the combined support of full-cable is more reasonable than that with non-support and that with the combined support of “anchor bolt and cable”. Finally, based on the features of soft coal seam in No.2265 work face of Xinxing coal mine, the relevant support schemes were put forward, and its specific support parameters and cross-section designs were drawn as well.

A salt dome appears to provide the basic medium requirements for the excavation of the 315 foot diameter, unsupported spherical cavity at a depth of 2700 feet required by the AEC in a proposed "decoupling" experiment. Tatum Salt Dome was a natural choice for a site because more geological and hydrological information has been accumulated on Tatum than any other salt dome on the Gulf Coast. The Tatum Dome is a mile in diameter, roughly flat topped, nearly cylindrical in shape and has some overhang at the top. The salt stock has nearly vertical layering of alternating bands of salt and anhydrite. In the vicinity of the dome, adequate fresh water for solution mining is available in surface streams and in subsurface aquifers. A saline aquifer is available for brine disposal. A tentative cavity location was selected near the center of the dome which meets the design criteria established by the AEC.
