A first principle flotation model has been derived from the basic mechanisms involved in flotation. The model consists of a series of analytical equations for bubble generation, bubble-particle collision, attachment, detachment, and froth phase recovery. The model can predict flotation from both hydrodynamic and surface chemistry parameters such as bubble size, particle size, energy dissipation rate, ?-potentials, contact angles (?), etc. The model has been validated in a series of laboratory batch flotation experiments, in which mono-sized glass beads are used as feeds. The experimental results are in good agreement with model predictions both in terms of grade and recovery.

This research developed and simulated a novel multi-indicator Fatigue Detection and Alert System (FDAS) designed to enhance fatigue detection accuracy in mining environments. The system integrates a comprehensive set of inputs: eye blink rate, eye closure duration, yawning frequency, distraction levels, Pre-shift Check-in Scores (Self-report) and Electroencephalography (EEG) Levels. Using MATLAB’s Fuzzy Logic Rule Viewer (FLRV) and Simulink, simulations demonstrated the FDAS’s robust ability to process these diverse physiological and behavioural indicators accurately. It effectively classified operator fatigue into low, moderate, and high fatigue levels, consistently providing appropriate outputs and corresponding intervention recommendations across various mixed-signal scenarios. The system achieved a calculated accuracy of 85.19% across 27 test entries, with a standard deviation of approximately 1.8459, confirming its reliability for real-time fatigue monitoring. These findings highlight the significant potential of this fuzzy logicbased approach to proactively identify early signs of fatigue, substantially enhancing safety and operational efficiency in demanding mining operations.

After accepting the invitation to make this appearance today, it occurred to me that the subject matter which had been assigned to me, namely, the purpose and role of an advisor, was, contrary to what; some people might think, a controversial subject. In my brief lifetime, I have discovered that the world is full of advisors; that is to say, there are many people who undertake to render advice concerning subject matters upon which they may, or may not be qualified to speak. It shall be my purpose today to set forth what now appears to be the function of the members of the Advisory Council to the U. S. Public Land Law Review Commission; and, in so doing, I hope that I do not offend the Commission or any other-member of the Advisory Council with whom I serve. It has always been my personal conception of the role of an advisor that he should tender advice when it is requested, and then only if he has prepared himself concerning the matter upon which the advice is being given. I am sure it was the Congressional intent at the time the Public Land Law Review Commission was established indeed it was the hope. of Congress--that those of us who were to become members of the Advisory Council were informed upon certain particular subjects and then at the proper time express our opinions upon these subjects-and, by the same token, not attempt to enter opinions upon problems with which we have no experience in theory or in actuality. Some wag once said that if Columbus had had an advisory council, he would still be waiting at the dock in Spain, and there is more truth than fiction in that statement. With this problem in mind, let us examine the purpose of the Advisory Council itself.

The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar» filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product. Lab and pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70\ -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20\ are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press. Currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 Series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50\ to achieve these results.

INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The nondimensional form of equation 1 is given by Vd = DP dpp(3) V dr+ where Pp = Pp/ Ppb(4) By integrating equation 3 from the rough wall stopping distance, S , to the center of the pipe, the deposition velocity can be obtained. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. Introduction The geological processes that form coal can also concentrate trace elements in the coal. For example, the average concentration of arsenic in bituminous coal (20 ppm) is ten times the average concentration found in all the other rocks that make up the earth's crust (2 ppm). Similarly, other elements, such as antimony, cadmium, mercury and selenium, are more concentrated in coal than in the earth's crust. When coal is burned, trace elements can be further concentrated. Although no new constraints on trace clement emissions were placed on the power generation industry under the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, the act does mandate a three-year study of air toxics. Any new regulations aimed at electric utilities as a result of this Federally-mandated study will almost assuredly be very costly-an estimated $1 billion per year. Many trace elements in coal are associated with mineral matter. For example, arsenic is commonly associated with pyrite, cadmium with sphalerite, chromium with clay minerals, mercury with pyrite and cinnabar, nickel with millerite, pyrite and other sulfides, and selenium with lead selenide, pyrite and other sulfides (Finkelman, 1980). There are also cases in which some of these elements are organically bound. Just as both organic and pyritic sulfur can be found in the same coal, the same trace element may be both organically bound and present as part of a mineral in the sane coal. Physical coal cleaning techniques are effective in removing mineral matter from coal and can potentially remove at least some of the trace elements associated with specific minerals, thereby reducing the release of these elements into the atmosphere. Conventional coal cleaning to remove trace elements As part of a project funded by the Electric Power Research Institute, CQ Inc., a wholly-owned EPRI subsidiary located in western Pennsylvania, has demonstrated that large reductions in the concentration of many trace elements are possible if conventional coal cleaning techniques are properly applied. Four examples are given in Tables 1 to 4. In each example, the results shown were generated by cleaning the coal at CQ Inc.'s commercial-scale cleaning test facility. Cleaning results for Upper Freeport Seam coal from Northern Appalachia are provided in Table 1. Data are presented in the table in two ways: as a weight-based concentration (parts per million) and as a concentration per heat unit (grams per billion Btu). Grams per billion Btu is analogous to pounds per million Btu, but avoids the use of numbers with many decimal places. The heat-based concentration provides a better measure of boiler impacts, because the increased heating value obtained through coal cleaning reduces the number of tons that must be burned to produce a given thermal output. Reducing the quantity of coal burned reduces the quantity of trace elements entering the boiler. This raw coal is relatively high in several trace elements of environmental concern, including arsenic, cadmium and chromium. Cleaning provided large reductions in the quantity of arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluorine, lead, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc. The results for tests with a Powder River Basin coal, Rosebud/McKay, are presented in Table 2. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, fluorine, mercury, nickel, selenium and zinc were observed with cleaning. The concentration of chromium increased with cleaning, while lead concentration increased in one test and decreased in another. Table 3 presents test results for Croweburg Seam coal from Oklahoma. Large reductions in arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium and zinc were obtained with cleaning. Smaller reductions were obtained with lead and nickel, while chromium, fluorine and mercury increased in at least one of the tests. Table 4 presents cleaning test data for Kentucky No.11 Seam coal. In this case, large reductions were obtained with all elements measured. In general, these data indicate that physical coal cleaning is effective in reducing the concentration of many trace elements, especially if they are present in the coal at relatively high concentrations. The degree of reduction achieved is coal-specific, relating in part to the degree of mineral association of the specific trace element and the degree of liberation of the trace element-bearing mineral. INTRODUCTION Probably the most important family of chemicals used in mineral processing today is a category of basic commodity chemicals loosely denoted as pH regulators. Typical chemicals which are referred to as pH regulators include lime, magnesium hydroxide, soda ash, caustic soda, ammonia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. These chemicals are often used in very significant amounts in almost all of the major mineral processing operations such as flotation, hydrometallurgy, etc. (in dosages up to ten pounds per ton of feed ore treated). While cheaper in cost per unit weight of chemical than more specific chemicals such as collectors, frothers, extractents, etc., the overall cost to the mill operator is generally higher with pH regulators per ton of ore processed than with any other given processing chemical. For example, a rough rule of thumb in sulfide mineral flotation is that the cost of lime is double that of the collector(s) used. The symbol pH is used to designate hydrogen ion concentration. When acids, salts, and bases are dissolved in water, individual molecules are dissociated into their constituent radicals or ions. The strength of an acid or a base increases with the extent of such dissociation or ionization. An alkaline solution is one in which the number of Qydroxyl ions (OH ) exceeds the hydrogen ions (H ). In an acid solution, the hydrogen ions predominate. In either case, both ions are always present as water itself ionizes to a limited extent, that is: [ ] The pH scale is logarithmic and the pH value is the negative of the logarithm (base 10) of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter of solution. For example, a pH of 5 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 0.00001 (1 x 10-5). Likewise, a pH of 9 means that the molar concentration of hydrogen ions per liter is 1 x 10-9. Normally, the relationship between hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion concentration is based on the relationship: Concentration of H ion x concentration of OH- ion = constant. Eq. (1) In dilute and/or moderately concentrated solutions that are normally used in mineral procygsing processes, the constant at 25°C is 10-14. On the pH scale, the value of pH equal to 7 represents the hydrogen ion concentration of a neutral solution. pH values lower than pH 7 indicate increasing acidity and higher values than 7 indicate alkalinity. Table 1 shows the nature of the pH scale at 25°C. Temperature affects the extent of ionization of dissolved acids, salts, bases, and water so that the hydrogen ion concentration (hence pH) of a solution is also affected by temperature. As a means of demonstrating this dependency, Table 2 shows the change of the exponent of the constant (base 10) in Eq. 1 and the pH value corresponding to neutrality as a function of temperature. It is also important, for example, that alkalinity or acidity expressed by pH not be confused with total alkalinity or total acidity. For example, total alkalinity is commonly determined by titration with a standard acid solution (usually HC1). pH is a measure of the hydroxyl ion concentration of an alkaline solution, whereas titration is a measure of an alkaline solution's acid neutralizing capacity. Thus, if one takes a series of various alkaline solutions prepared using different chemicals but all of exactly the same pH (and temperature) and then subsequently carries out a titration on each solution with a standard acid, it would be observed that the various alkaline solutions would neutralize entirely different amounts of acid. As an example, 0.08 grams of caustic (NaOH) , 6.32 grams of soda ash (Na2CO3), and 8.17 grams of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) all have a pH of 11.3 at 25°C. One liter of each of the above solutions neutralizes 0.073, 4.348 and 8.496 grams of HC1, respectively. Floor heave can be a major problem in large open pit mines. Unrestrained floor heave can lead to flooding, equipment destruction, slope instability and subsidence. It is particularly troublesome in coal mines where the floor is frequently relatively flat, and is often underlain by major water Searing units. This paper examines methods of analysis used in computing floor stability, and sets out a simple rational method of evaluating the required level of water pressure control to maintain acceptable floor stability. The approach is illustrated by reference to the stability of the floor of the Morwell open cut lignite project in Southeast Australia, where this approach has been used successfully for over a decade.

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

The floor-heave and no-floor-heave phenomena at a western U.S. coal mine could not be properly simulated in numerical models using conventional shear-dominant failure criteria. Although the previous numerical study using FLAC3D very reasonably demonstrated these phenomena, 3DEC modeling in conjunction with the discrete fracture network (DFN) technique was performed to better understand the true behavior of floor heave associated with underground mining in an anisotropic stress field. As a result, the latter models predicted floor heave that agreed with relative amounts of observed heave from each gateroad system, but the cause of heave was mainly related to the degree of anisotropy instead of the size of the pillar.

It has recently been discovered that the pH at which gold can be extracted from cyanide solution with primary, secondary, and tertiary amines can be increased 2 to 5 pH units by the addition of modifiers. Under these circumstances gold can be extracted at pH values from 9 to 11, commensurate with the pH range found in cyanide leach liquors. The selectivity of the amines and amine/modifier combinations for AU (CN)[-2] over other metal -cyanide complexes is presented and discussed. In addition, potential applications for the solvent extraction of gold from cyanide solutions are discussed.

Gold is very important to support the financial system, and to be used in industries of the jewelry, high-tech fields such as electronics and aerospace, etc. Gold is mainly extracted from three types of ores: primary ore (vein gold), placer (alluvial gold) and associated ore. Cyanide was widely used in gold ore flotation to depress gangue minerals and leaching/cyanidation. The process of extracting gold from gold ore, its separation and flotation concentrate, specifically through a technique called cyanidation or cyanide leaching. This method, which has been dominant since the 1970s, utilizes a dilute solution of cyanide to dissolve gold from the ore. While effective, the use of cyanide raises environmental and safety concerns due to its high toxicity. Cyanide spills can have severe environmental consequences. This has led to the exploration of alternative, environmentally friendly reagents. This paper discusses processing results using the alternative flotation depressants such as sodium sulfite (Na2SO3), etc. to produce a goldrich flotation concentrate for sale to a smelter or as feed to an alternative leaching agent. and methods to extract gold from ore without relying on cyanide.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

History of the feldspar industry in the United States has been summarized by DuBois (I)*. The earliest production of feldspar in the United States is reported to have been from Mitchell County, North Carolina, about 1744, with the product shipped to England, In about 1825 several pegmatites were worked to a limited extent in Connecticut, with the production shipped to England. The first feldspar grinding facility was constructed about 1850 in Connecticut, with chaser mills used. Feldspar has been produced continuously in the United States since about 1870. Feldspar is produced from the following states: North Carolina, California, Georgia, Connecticut, South Carolina, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, Virginia, Arizona, and Wyoming. Total United States production for 1969 will amount to approximately 900,000 tons. The most current published figures for world production is 1966, at which time 2,165,000 tons was produced. It is estimated that world production of feldspar for 1969 will amount to 2,410,000 tons. Historically, feldspar has been produced by hand sorting and hand cobbing of coarse block feldspar obtained from the intermediate and wall zones of zoned pegmatites. In the United States the reserve of known block feldspar, recoverable by hand sorting is nearing depletion. More emphasis is now placed on feldspar sources contained in finer grained rocks, especially coarse granites or fine-grained pegmatite and beach, dune, and river sands from which the feldspar is obtained by beneficiation.

The application of automatic control to mineral processing operations has been gaining momentum during recent years. Many strategies are being developed for controlling crushing, grinding and flotation circuits, however, their implementation in industrial plants is being slowed down because of the costs and difficulties in evaluating these strategies in a systematic manner. An interactive computer simulation package, developed at the University of California, provides the capability of analyzing the process dynamics of mineral processing circuits. This paper presents an overview of the simulator and its application to the case studies of grinding and flotation.

With the exception of sublevel caving, the most common method of underground mining in Sweden is the "cut-and-fill" method. It is normally used for mining non-ferrous metals , and' is used extensively in the complex sulfide ore mines of the Boliden Company in north and central Sweden as well as the mines of the STORA and Vieille Montagne Companies in central Sweden. All in all, the cut-and-fill method is used in 13 of Sweden's 45 mines. As the mines are relatively small, the volume of ore mined by this method represents only about 5 % of the total ore production in Sweden. The commercial value, however, is much large than this percentage would imply. The production volumes and grades of some typical mines are shown in Table I. As seen, when rated internationally, the grades are comparatively low. The prices are set according to ?international metal prices? as dictated by the London stock exchange, and in lieu of governmental support, rational management methods are critical in order to achieve satisfactory profit.

Profitable marketing of most minerals is dependent upon the total delivered cost to the user. Transportation costs are often greater than the value of the mineral f.o.b. the mine or processing facility. In some cases, transportation costs are three to five times the mineral cost. For many years, transportation costs were controlled by a complex system involving the transportation companies and supervised by regulatory agencies. This paper will deal with the effects of deregulation on rail costs and outline the major changes in transportation economics.

Our programs are oriented to serve the conservation objectives of the Johnson Administration and of the Nation by seeking out the most efficient and best uses for coal. We believe that even if only a portion of our program is successful, the coal industry and the Nation will benefit far out of proportion to our expenditures. Operating with a budget of $7,220,000 in Fiscal Year 1966, OCR sponsors contract research which offers potential for achieving benefits to the coal industry in the form of new production and new markets. This directs us into many areas of research activity: in coal combustion, in advancements in mining methods and coal preparation, in new uses for coal, and in associated economic and marketing research.

This study aims to identify individual elements and to gain an understanding of the surface reaction mechanisms, as well as the properties of precipitated pyrite particles observed during the hydrothermal formation of an ore deposit. A combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), air annealing in a furnace, scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was applied to investigate the crystal structure and identify the individual elements, permanence, transformation and chemical/electronic properties of such pyrite.
