This paper is a brief review of the recent history, and the present status of, of the program designed to develop practical new processes for producing pipeline quality gas from coal. Clean synthetic pipeline-quality gas from coal became a major objective during 1971. Agreement was reached with the American Gas Association, Inc., to cosponsor a $120 million, 4-year program to be funded $80 million by Government and $40 million by American Gas Association. The program was first announced by President Nixon in his Energy Message on June 4, 1971, and a portion of the additional funds needed for the program was approved by the Congress in the December 1971 supplemental budget action. A natural gas shortage has developed in the United States and every indication is that it will worsen. Many transmission and distribution companies have already been forced to curtail sales because of the shortage. Large sums are being committed to systems needed to bring liquefied natural gas from abroad and to plants to manufacture synthetic natural gas from petroleum--also largely imported. On the other hand, there is sufficient domestic coal to supply all of the needed gas through the next century. This accelerated program is designed to provide processes for making gas from coal at costs, including security costs, below the imported alternates. As outlined in the President's Energy Message, OCR and A.G.A. have accelerated the coal gasification program to make it possible to construct and operate a "demonstration plant" (semicommercial size) after 1975. Several processes, in various stages of development as will be described later, are being supported. Concurrently, the overall program will be constantly monitored and evaluated with the assistance of an independent, unbiased contractor. C F Braun of Alhambra, California, was selected for this task and has been actively engaged in it for the last several months. Through continuing studies of the various processes and subprocesses as the pilot plant program continues, optimums will be discerned. These will serve as

Transitioning from diesel-powered loading and hauling machinery to battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) responds to the need for deepening underground mines as regulations become tighter. When using BEVs, exhaust gases and diesel particulate matter (DPM) emissions can be eliminated, and the energy required for the machines is used more effectively. Unlike their diesel counterparts, which are refueled, BEV loading and hauling machines — specifically, load haul dump (LHD) machines — can use battery swapping. This brings additional aspects to the operation that need to be considered, which have not yet been studied extensively. This study used discrete event simulation (DES) to analyze how the different numbers of BEV LHDs affect queueing and productivity when using different numbers of batteries and different swapping times in an underground block cave mine. The results identified the formation of working groups, where the machines swapped their batteries concurrently within each group, and their relation to the queueing time. Additionally, the minimum number of batteries per machine was identified to maximize productivity while minimizing queueing time. This study demonstrates DES as a powerful tool to assess and analyze conceptual systems and identify their underlying structures, which can enhance the deployment of BEV LHDs in underground block cave mine operations.

Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous volcanic rock. A distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands 5 to 20 times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of 2% to 6% combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated above 1600°F (871°C) crude perlite pops in a manner similar to popcorn. The combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles in the heat softened glassy particles. It is these tiny glass sealed bubbles which account for the amazing lightweight and other exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite. The bulk densities of the expanded perlite generally range from 3 pounds per cubic foot (48 Kg M3) to 10 pounds per cubic foot (160 Kg H3).

At the close of World War II Germany said if they had gone underground one year earlier with more of their operations, the war could have lasted four years longer with perhaps much of Britain devastated. The protection of the home front no longer rests with the soldier in actual combat. The battle will be won at home with the most careful kind of protection against missiles. After Nagasaki-Hiroshima Sir Winston Churchill said in substance "Up to now the Almighty has mercifully withheld from man the knowledge of these terrible weapons of destruction."

A hydrocyclone is a piece of equipment commonly used as a classifier in mill circuit operations. Traditionally, hydrocyclone performance is characterized by the classification efficiency parameter, such as cut size (d50c), sharpness of separation () and bypass (Rf ). A plethora of endeavors have already been made to develop parametric models to determine hydrocyclone performance that correlate design and process variables. In contrast to those studies, we made an attempt to develop an approach to derive required design parameters purely from hydrodynamic principles that provides a platform to optimize the operation of a hydrocyclone for a given application. In this selection methodology, we calculated the differential pressure at the air core, as well as the tangential velocity at the boundary of the air core from the vortex principle in a confined geometry at different operating regimes. A series of experiments were conducted using Weir’s Cavex® hydrocylone where process variables—such as solids concentration and feed flowrates—were experimentally studied to determine the key classification parameters. For the validation of the current approach we used the same process variables to derive design parameters and compared them with the existing design. The current approach can provide insights towards the selection of design parameters and can be useful for mining industry professionals to optimize different operating parameters of hydrocyclones to achieve the best performance.

For the desulfurization of weak SO2 gas streams, Degussa developed a process using dilute H2SO4 solution containing H2O2 instead of conventional gas scrubbing with all solid absorbent medium (limestone, MgO). The process is based on fast reaction of H2O2 with SO2 yielding H2SO4 up to 70% strength, depending on off-gas tem­perature. Compared to the conventional systems with typically < 95% efficiency, independent on the raw gas SO2 concentra­tion, residual SO2 concentrations of less than 20 mg!Nm3 can be easily achieved, corresponding to nearly 100% removal. These features render the H2O2 process a very attractive, low capital cost technology to retrofit existing conventional desulfurization plants.

The Columbia Slough Consolidation Conduit Project is a 12 ft. 0 in. inside diameter—15 ft. 4 in. excavated diameter tunnel, 8,300 lf. in length. The tunnel is divided in two parts a 4,460 lf. reach to the West and a 3,770 lf. reach to the East separated by a flow regulation structure in the middle. The project was built for the City of Portland, Oregon Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) by the Frank Coluccio Construction Company (FCCC) Seattle, Washington under a $22,600,000.00 contract starting in 1998 and completing the contract in 2000 at a total cost to the City of $25,448,000. An increase of 12.6% from the original contract. The tunnel was constructed in an alluvial sediment that ranges up to 1,500 feet thick. The sediment varies from ?ne silty sand and sandy silt (SM-ML) to coarse sand and gravel (GP-GM) with varying quantities of cobbles and boulders. Most of the tunnel was constructed above the water table although one reach of almost 1,000 lf. had water to above the tunnel crown. The contractor, FCCC, used a Lovat 15 ft. 3 in.900 hp shielded TBM with multiple doors (4) of variable opening to excavate and support the tunnel. Tunnel supports were 5 in. WF 16 lbs. per foot at 4 ft. spacing and4 in. Douglas Fir lagging. Tunnel excavation was worked in 10 hour shifts with additional equipment maintenance and repair on the off time. The original Geotechnical Design Summary Report (GDSR) established a baseline for contractual purposes of slightly over 5 boulders (between 12 in. and48 in.) per foot of tunnel. (Table 1) At the pre-bid conference, three test pits were excavated to approximately tunnel invert, one at each end of the project and one in the middle near the flow regulation structure. The test pits encountered a few boulders but did not seem to support the five boulders per foot (varied from one boulder per foot of tunnel to eight b/lf.). Subsequent to the pre-bid meeting and the test pits, BES issued any addenda which changed the baseline boulder quantity in the GDSR to 1.7 boulders per foot of tunnel (varied from0.2 to 3.5 boulders per foot) a reduction of 67% from the original baseline. It is interesting to note the two separate tunnel reaches and how they were evaluated in the GDSR. Originally the Eastern portion of the work was projected at5.08 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 5.30 boulders per foot of tunnel for a variance of less than 5%. In the revised quantity the Eastern portion was projected at 2.01 boulders per foot of tunnel and the Western portion at 1.42 boulders

The requirement for large diesel equipment to be certified for operation in potential gassy mine conditions in western oil shale mines motivated a design engineering project to develop a dry exhaust conditioner system to replace traditional wet scrubber technology. A dry exhaust conditioner for a 600 hp diesel engine was designed and fabricated for retrofitting into a 600 hp underground haul truck. The engine conditioner package was taken through a simulated certification process at the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Approval and Certification Center to refine test procedures and to uncover any flaws in the dry exhaust conditioner technology. The engine/exhaust system was then installed in an underground haul truck to demonstrate mine-worthiness of the system. No inherent features were discovered that would prevent the system from meeting test requirements. However, the tests did point out several deficiencies in the prototype design.

"Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of an open-pit mine has several challenges. A good quality mesh of the model domain is a pre-requisite for convergence in solution. Good quality tetrahedral meshing and insertion of prism layers in faceted open-pit mine geometry is complicated due to presence of numerous vertices and ridges. Presence of vertices and ridges result in poor quality tetra elements and holes in prism layers, which cause instability in the model. Good quality pit bottom prism mesh elements significantly improve the formation of velocity boundary layer and thermal boundary layer at the pit bottom. This results in an expected temperature dependent micrometeorological buoyancy flow in the pit. Whereas, model geometry without a prism layer, results in abrupt temperature gradient near pit bottom. Buoyancy flow and recirculation have significant effect in lifting mechanism of fugitive dust particles generated near pit bottom. Representative initial and boundary conditions and selection of appropriate turbulence model have significant influences on the simulation results. In this paper, three-dimensional models of open-pit mines are developed using commercial CFD software (CRADLE-CFD). Important constraints and various consequences in modeling complex open-pit geometries are presented. INTRODUCTION Application of Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to model an open-pit mine to predict fugitive dust and pollutant concentrations in and around a mine is relatively new. In former Soviet republic (USSR), Baklanov [1] and Belousov [2, 3] presented numerical models of pollutant transport in open-pit mines in Arctic regions. In recent years, advances in mathematical and computational fields have enabled better modeling of pollutant dispersion phenomenon around mines using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Several CFD software packages have been used by various researchers to model the pollutant transport in open-pit mines. Works by Alvarez et al. [4]; Lowndes et al. [5]; Silvester et al. [6]; Torno et al. [7]; Choudhury and Bandopadhyay [8]; Collingwood et al. [9]; Raj et al. [10] and Flores et al. [11]; are examples of application of various commercial and open source CFD packages (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model pollutant transport in open-pit mines. These researches provided a strong background for additional research involving CFD modeling of open-pit mines. Due to the limitations of computational times and capacity, 3D modeling and various aspects of fugitive dust dispersion in open-pit mines remained unexplored."

The sandstone type Devladivske uranium deposit is located within the limits of Eocene pale-ovalley filled with alluvial sediments. Mineralization with uranium content up to 0.1% forms several ore beds divided by redox barriers. In the period 1962-1983 the deposit has been exploited over an area of 918000m2 by in situ leaching (ISL) using drillholes with a depth between 35 and 100m. During mining operation about 200,000 t of H2SO4, 6,300 t of HNO3, and 15,000 t of NH4NO3, have been pumped in the ore body. In 1983, the groundwater pollution aureole had a length of 4.5 km and a width of 400-600 m. There is a hydraulic connection between the uranium-bearing aquifer and both the upper and lower ones. The technological solutions used for ISL caused partial contamination of these horizons. After mining completion, dilution of the residual technological solutions with "pure" natural waters took place through gaps in impermeable sediments between aquifer horizons. Calculation of self-purification process kinetics shows that the sulfate ion pollution aureole will disappear approximately after 120-150 years at a distance up to 2.0-2.5 km from the western margin of the deposit. This means that there is no risk for contamination of the river Saksagan? that flows at a distance of 17km from the deposit.

Introduction The Harzwasserwerke, a public body of the Federal State of Lower Saxony, supplies drinking water to an area bordered by Braunschweig, Bremen, the Northern and the Western edges of the Harz-Mountains. From the very beginning in 1928, the Harzwasserwerke have been systematically constructing reservoirs in the western Harz which have the function of collecting and storing the frequently occuring flood waters as well as providing drinking water. The Grane-Reservoir with a capacity of 45 Million cu.m., the last of the big reservoirs, was built in 1968-1970. A system of connecting tunnels effectively enlarges the natural catchment area of this reservoir and the surplus waters of the Oker and Radau valleys - where floods occur particularly during the spring - are being conducted to the reservoir. By building the 4.800 m long "Radau-Tunnel", the waters of the Radau valley will now also be used more efficiently and its surplus waters will pass to the Grane Reservoir via this new tunnel and the Oker-Grane-Tunnel which was finished in 1970. The Project The Radaustollen has been planned and put out to tender by the Harzwasserwerke as a conventional "Freispiegelstollen". The horseshoe profile has a cross-section of 8 m2. Lining was required only in disturbed rock areas; lining of the whole tunnel was not necessary. The gradient of the tunnel is 4 % 0 rising = 25 m over the total length of 4.800 m.

INTRODUCTION Early in the morning of July 16, 1979, there was a breach in the earthen retaining dam of a tailings pond at the United Nuclear Corporation&apos;s (UNC&apos;s) Church Rock uranium mill. The acidified liquid and tailings slurry spilled through the damaged portion of the retaining wall into an arroyo that is a tributary to the Rio Puerco river system. The Rio Puerco runs through Gallup, New Mexico, and eventually crosses the New Mexico-Arizona border (Fig. 1). On its way to Gallup, the Rio Puerco and its tributaries pass through land with a checkerboard pattern of ownership, with portions owned or leased by the Navajos, individuals, the Bureau of Land Management, and the State. In terms of tailings liquid volume (3.6 x 108L; 94 million gal), the UNC spill ranks as one of the largest. The mass of solids released in the slurry (10.0 x 105 kg; 1 100 tons) appears to be close to the median for accidents of this kind, however [U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), 1979]. The UNC first opened its Church Rock uranium mill in 1977 on land adjacent to acreage belonging to the Navajo tribe. The mill, which is next to the UNC Church Rock mine, is located approximately 16 km (10 miles) northeast of Gallup, New Mexico (Fig. 1). Gallup, a town of 18 000 people, is the closest population center. The region surrounding the plant site is sparsely populated by Navajos, at a density of approximately 5.8 persons/km2 (15 persons/sq mile). The UNC mill and mines employ approximately 650 persons, and the adjacent Kerr-McGee uranium mine employs about 300. The UNC mill normally processes 3.2 x 106kg/day (3 500 tons/day) of uranium ore, depositing the acidified tailings slurry in a series of three earthen holding ponds. The tailings ponds are located east of the pipeline arroyo that feeds into the Rio Puerco approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) from the southernmost tailings dam. The liquid portion of the tailings slurry evaporates in the ponds; hence, under normal conditions, there is no surface flow from the holding ponds to the arroyo. Both runoff from the plant site after heavy rains and possible seepage from the tailings ponds may deliver radionuclides to the arroyo-river system, however. The dam across the southernmost tailings pond was considered to be in keeping with the state of the art. However, the New Mexico Environmental Improvement Division (NMEID) had warned UNC about dangers of locating the pond over a heterogeneous geological formation. The state Engineer&apos;s Office approved of the site only after UNC agreed to strict design criteria. Others have pointed to dangers of constructing earthen dams for impoundment of uranium mill tailings (Carter, 1978). Causes of the dam break were multiple: the UNC mill filled the tailings pond to a level that exceeded permit criteria; the tailings pond was lined improperly; the dam was constructed using clay that was compacted excessively, resulting in cracking and subsequent seepage; and the unstable substrate beneath the dam permitted differential settling. The UNC Church Rock mine has continuously released dewatering effluent into the pipeline arroyo at a rate of 88.3 L/sec (1 400 gal/min) since 1968. Before 1975 this effluent was not treated; after 1975 it received precipitation treatment for removal of Ra-226. Radionuclides are also released into the river system through the dewatering of the Kerr-McGee uranium mine 1.6 km (1.0 mile) north of the UNC mill. During usual mining operations, approximately 227 L/sec (3 600 gal/min) are released into the pipeline arroyo and subsequently into the Rio Puerco. The Kerr-McGee mine began continuous release of dewatering effluent in January 1972. In 1974 Kerr-McGee began Ra-226 precipitation treatment of its dewatering releases, but NMEID data indicate that treatment has often been incomplete. The effluent from both mines has been responsible for transforming the downstream portion of the Rio Puerco from a sporadically dry riverbed into a continuously flowing stream and has contributed to the current levels of background radiation along the river system (Table 1). This paper will summarize the postspill monitoring efforts and relate the assessment of this spill to the general question of evaluating the health effects of nuclear fuel-cycle wastes. The data pertaining to the measurement of radionuclides in the Church Rock environment and the radionuclide concentrations in animals will appear in forthcoming reports. CHURCH ROCK HEALTH EFFECTS ASSESSMENT APPROACH The initial health effects evaluation involved identifying the radionuclides that were released into the river system from the tailings pond. Table 1 lists the State of New Mexico maximum permissible radionuclide concentrations for liquids released to unrestricted areas, the typical tailings liquid concentrations, and postspill river water concentrations. The tailings liquid contained comparatively high levels of Th-230, Ra-226, Pb-210, and Po-210--all of which, according to postspill river water samples, had exceeded the state maximum permissible concentrations (MPC) at one time or another. After the radionuclides in the tailings were identified, pathways through which humans could be exposed were clarified. In most industrialized countries, the largest element of the mining industry in physical volume is that devoted to the extraction and processing of materials for use as construction aggregates. Required for all developments in industry and commerce, power and transportation, and housing and public services, their use is so widespread that possible sources are exploited throughout all geographic regions, as close as possible to the point of use. Thus, it is also the most frequently encountered form of mining throughout the world. These materials come from four main sources:- (a) Excavation of unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel (b) Stone quarrying. (c) Processing of slags and other mineral wastes. (d) Manufacturing from clays and shales by heat fusion. The major uses are in: (a) Portland cement concrete, that most versatile of construction materials, including the many concrete products in current use. (b) Asphalt cement concrete; widely employed for paving roads, parking lots, airfields, etc. (c) Foundation materials, such as road base, granular backfills, railway ballast, etc.

INTRODUCTION Bumps are among the most dangerous hazards in the Polish copper ore mines. Their occurrence is the result of the dynamic processes in the rock mass caused by natural factors connected with the deposition of strata and, to some extent, by technological factors resulting from the process of exploitation. In this connection, in order to ensure worker safety and choose such a technology that allows an achievement of high technological and economical parameters, a detailed knowledge of the phenomena occurring in the rock mass is required. In copper mines the basis for forecasting and control of bumps is obtained by continuous measurements and observations of the symptoms of rock mass pressure, the analysis of which ensures the accuracy of forecasting and points toward preventive means that must be applied to prevent bumps. The methods most often used for preventing bumps in copper mining are discussed in this paper.

In the real world of coal mining, the bottom line for almost every support project decision is economic (i.e., what is it going to cost?). Up to this point, I have discussed the methods to improve the performance of typical support projects by better installation, materials, and techniques, thus lowering the impact of the bottom line cost. In this chapter, 1 shall explore what costs are relevant in mining construction, and how these costs are developed. The chapter centers around two major discussions: (I) developing cost accounting techniques, and (2) cost-estimating procedures for support construction. Each focuses on the fundamentals of practical cost considerations necessary for decisions on construction projects underground. Since cost accounting, economics, and investment planning are all subjects which warrant complete discussions on their own, this chapter will focus on distilling the important concepts required by a planning engineer into an easily understandable presentation.

In China, an enormous amount of Au-Ag bering calcines, residues and tailings are produced each year from various sources in mining, metallurgical and chemical industries. For a long time, these materials have been either stored up in dumps or disposed of into rivers, resulting in not only waste of resources but also severe environmental pollution. It is therefore of great significance, both from economical and public welfare points of view, to recover efficiently and make full use of the metallic values from these miscellaneous materials. In this paper the physical and chemical properties of these Au-Ag bearing calcines, leached residues and tailings are described and the current status of their utilization are briefly outlined, followed by a more detailed description of some innovative processes now in practice. Lastly, the potential prospects of gold and silver recovery from these materials in China, particularly in the Hunan province, are envisaged.

The recovery of P2O5 from a 90-95% minus 45 microns phosphate slimes sample was carried out in a 5.08-cm internal diameter and 549-cm high flotation column cell. The influence of the feed rate, feed percent (%) solids, and frother dosage on the recovery was investigated following a truncated cubic 3 level by 3 variables experimental design. Two three-variable interactions of feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (+l)/frother dosage (-1) and feed rate (-l)/feed percent solids (-1)/ frother dosage (+I) gave the region of optimum column performance: recovery (52.60-74.50%), mass yield (15.68-18.80%), and concentrate grade (22.87-31.2196). The collector dosage also showed a significant influence on the column performance. The high reagent consumption relative to the current plant levels points to the need for the removal of ultrafine particles (<10 µm).

Knowledge of the amount of time material spends in a continuous mill in a closed grinding circuit is essential for circuit performance analysis and scale-up design. A convenient method for acquiring this information involves the use of pulse tracers in residence time distribution (RTD) experiments. In typical grinding circuit experiments, RTD measurements are done by injecting a pulse tracer into the mill inlet and detecting it in the circuit exit. In this article, an easy mathematical method for calculating mean residence time and the degree of mixing of material in a mill present in a closed grinding circuit is developed. There are no restrictions on the location of the tracer injection or detection points with this method. Any convenient location in the circuit can be chosen without affecting the residence time distribution measured. The analysis of impulse response data obtained from several commercial grinding circuits using this method is presented.

The objective of any business is to maximize the value derived from the commodity produced. There is a point where additional expenditure does not return a value sufficient to justify the additional expense. The treatment of high acid consuming copper ores is a perfect example of this principle in which the relationship of acid consumed to the percentage of Copper extracted is vital to the economic value of the final product. This paper describes a method of evaluating column leach test data to determine the economic optimum conditions for leaching high acid consuming copper ores. The effect of acid consumption on the net economic value of the Copper extracted is very significant in the case of high acid consuming ores. The focus of this paper is the relationship of acid concentration in the raffinate, and acid cure dosage to the economic value of a leach cycle.
