Roofbolts with expansion anchors have been used at White Pine for more than twelve years, but always with an understanding that their performance was not entirely satisfactory. Some bolts fell out, some were obviously loose, and, when roof failures did occur, very few bolts actually broke. Obviously, there was an anchorage problem. A program was started in May, 1967, to define the problem and to solve it. This paper describes briefly those parts of the program which led to the development of a roofbolt assembly which performs much better in the medium-hard rocks at White Pine. As a result of the changes, significant improvements were found in the torque:tension, tension loss, and pull tests.

For achieving bulk economic excavation, large dump trucks are being used in majority of the earth moving operations resulting in high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) which exposes the operators to high levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). As the truck ages, hydro-pneumatic suspension struts loses their capability to effectively attenuate the vibration. A system is required to monitor and predict the performance of the suspension struts in real time. Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) has been applied for modeling and predicting the suspension system performance for lighter/smaller vehicles. However, no work has been done to implement machine learning or AI for modelling and predicting the performance of hydro-pneumatic struts in large dump trucks. Therefore, current work is going to be a pioneering effort towards developing machine learning and AI models for solving this problem. Support vector machine (SVM) and regularized dual non-linear regression has been implemented in order to achieve the goal. 3D virtual simulator for CAT793D was used to conduct experiments in MSC.ADMAS environment. The two main recorded outputs were the RMS accelerations in the vertical and horizontal directions at the operator seat for characterizing the performance of the suspension system. During the development and the training of the models, eighty percent (80%) of the total experimental data was used and the remaining 20% was used during the testing and validation of the developed models. SVM model showed the desired accuracy in terms of hydro-pneumatic suspension system performance prediction for large dump trucks. These models can be implemented in the dump truck controller which can then be used to monitor the performance of the suspension system in real-time, and with that proper maintenance and/or replacement can be scheduled by the maintenance personnel. Workplace safety, operator’s health and the overall system efficiency can be greatly improved with an implementation of such an intelligent system. INTRODUCTION Large capacity dump trucks are being employed in any earth moving operation throughout the world for achieving bulk economic excavation [1, 2]. A large dynamic impact force is produced with large capacity shovels dumping material weighing 100 tons or more in to the dump truck under gravity. This dynamic impact force generates high frequency shockwaves which travels throug0068 the truck body, chassis and reaches the operator’s cabin and thus exposes the operator to severe levels of whole body vibrations (WBV). Recommended safe limits have been listed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in sections 1, 2, 4 and 5 of ISO 2631 (1997, 2003, 2001 and 2004). An operator can got through a long term back, shoulders, arms and neck disability and disorders if exposed to the WBV levels beyond those limits. The dynamic impact force generated as a result of the high impact shovel loading operations (HISLO) was modelled by Ali and Frimpong [2]. Furthermore, the complete methodology for optimizing the dumping process and reducing the impact force has been provided by Ali and Frimpong [1]. The vibration attenuation system present in the dump truck requires improvement in addition to the dumping process optimization. The vibration attenuation system in the dump truck commonly consists of hydro-pneumatic suspension struts. As the dump truck ages, its suspension system deteriorates and therefore loses its capability to effectively attenuate the shockwaves and the resulting vibrations produced by the dumping process. The deterioration tales place due to the contamination of the hydraulic oil or oil and nitrogen mixing or due to the gas accumulator diaphragm rupturing. The monitoring of the output vibration levels can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of any suspension system. This paper presents and compares characteristics of aggregate / quarrying software packages currently on the market, each product having strengths beneficial under different circumstances. To be successful, the developers must confront the limitations of their packages under a variety of situations, address the unique characteristics of the aggregate industry, and pay particular attention to the applicability of their products in real situations.

Procedures are presented for determining the hourly production rate, mechanical and physical availability, utilization, use of availability, and global performance factors for the bucket wheel excavator (BWE) itself, as well as for the system composed for the BWE, conveyors, and stacker. An example demonstrates the flow of calculations. Using available data from mines that use BWE technology, the ranges of values of the BWE performance factors are presented in tabular form. They can be used as a guide during mine planning as well as to evaluate existing systems.

There are few organic ligands that can adsorb effectively on noble metals, especially gold, in aqueous media. Ligands containing sulfur and nitrogen donors are known to be the most effective. Dithiophosphorous acids, for example, are known to adsorb on gold under certain conditions and these, along with xanthates, are used traditionally to recover gold values by flotation from ores. These compounds, however, are not necessarily selective for gold since most of the associated sulfide minerals are also floated. Monothiophosphorous acids, on the other hand, were recently discovered to float gold values selectively from sulfide-containing ores in a mildly alkaline medium; thus the dicresyl monothiophosphate is now used commercially in a gold flotation operation in the U.S.

To help solve problems associated with the optimization of complex coal preparation systems, a mathematical model has been assembled which can simplify calculations pertaining to the core of the plant, i.e. the coal cleaning section. It uses algebraic expressions, derived by fitting hyperbolic equations to Mayer curves, to calculate optimum settings for a specified array of coal cleaning units and feeds. This is done without search procedures, and with usually only minor iteration of a simple calculation to specify optima within 0.02% of specified product ash contents. The key to the calculation is a relationship derived via the analytical geometry of conic sections facilitating easy application of the incremental ash theory of separations. The model has been assembled in a generalised form to cater for N processes in parallel, each giving M separations to produce P final products. Examples are given involving assessment of some complex circuit options.

Acidic drainage has been long recognized to be the largest environmental liability facing the Canadian mining industry and to a lesser extent the public through abandoned mines. The Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) Program was the first initiative formed in 1989 to develop scientifically-based technologies to combat acidic drainage. This 9-year volunteer program reduced the liability by several hundreds of million dollars and established Canada as the recognized leader in research and development on acidic drainage for metal mines. MEND 2000 is a three-year program that started in 1998. The key to MEND 2000 is technology transfer- providing state-of-the-art information and technology developments to users. MEND-developed technologies are being verified by long-term monitoring of large-scale field tests. Maintaining linkages with a number of foreign government and industry-driven programs is also important to the successful completion of the program. Through these efforts a further reduction of the environmental liability associated with acidic drainage will be realized.

Coal froth flotation cells typically receive little attention in coal preparation plants. They process only a small portion of the total coal feed (perhaps 5-1 0% of the total plant feed in the United States), they are viewed as a way to take the load off the refuse thickener, and their operation is not well-understood by cleaning plant operators. Operating parameters are set based on the equipment supplier information, and reagent dosages are set at the recommendation of the latest chemical vendor. The cells then operate day in and day out, recovering coal and producing a product that may not meet ash or sulfur specifications or that may be the wrong percent solids for downstream dewatering operations. If improvements can be made to this circuit, then the whole plant will benefit. Paying attention to rate and residence time and the wealth of data from the literature or from a series of targeted laboratory tests can give operators the key to improving the performance of froth flotation cells AND overall plant performance. This paper provides an overview of froth flotation rate and residence time data and gives practical suggestions for specifying and using laboratory tests to improve froth flotation performance. Suggestions for improving froth cell performance are also given based on available literature data.

"Groundwater with elevated sulfate and metals was treated using a sulfate-reducing pilot PRB consisting of a series of six 55-gallon drums filled with ZVI (Fe0), wood chips, brewer’s grain, limestone, and emulsified vegetable oil (EVO). Sulfate was reduced from >3000 to <250 mg/L and Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, and Zn concentrations declined up to 3 orders of magnitude in 2 months. After 6 months of operation at a 7.5-day retention time, sulfate broke through. The system was then rejuvenated by injecting EVO in each drum and operated for 5 more months at a 9-day retention time. Sulfate-reducing bacteria in the pilot system grew by 3 to 4 orders of magnitude in 2 months. Some cementation of the PRB media was observed in the first 2 drums after processing 25 pore volumes of water, due to preferential upstream precipitation of sulfides; this can be avoided through operational modifications. Resulting permeability losses were estimated at 0.1% to 1% per year. Absorption/desorption was tested at bench scale to evaluate the use of various oil-soaked sorbents as a slow-release source of dissolved carbon. The tests show that oil sorbents can increase the useful life of a PRB between oil refills to over 100 pore volumes. INTRODUCTION High sulfate concentrations, low pH, and dissolved metal exceedances are common characteristics of mining-influenced water (MIW). Above-ground such MIW is commonly treated using biochemical reactors (BCR). In a BCR, water generally flows vertically downward through a layer of biomass, such as wood chips, manure, etc. The dissolved organics resulting from the decay of this material are oxidized first by microbes using oxygen; when oxygen is exhausted, other bacteria can use nitrate, and then sulfate to oxidize organics. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) reduce sulfate to sulfide, which quickly reacts with metals to form largely insoluble and stable metal sulfides. These reactions can be summarized as follows:"

The metallurgical response of the Point Leamington deposit has been studied. Two series of bench tests were conducted and various ore samples and flotation products were examined using image analysis techniques. The majority of sphalerite and chalcopyrite grains in this texturally complex ore were found to be smaller than 10 micrometers. Copper recoveries were low with losses mainly as fine inclusions in pyrite. Sphalerite recoveries were somewhat better due to a generally coarser habit. Gold and silver recoveries were also low and only solid solution silver was identified in the ore. The deposit shows poor economic prospects unless additional tonnage of high grade zinc ore can be delineated.

"In Crossrail’s Farringdon station, compensation grouting was successfully utilized to mitigate the surface settlements induced by the tunneling works. The main focus of this study was the platform tunnels, which were approximately 300m long each and were enlarged to platform size using sequential excavation method (SEM) from the existing TBM running tunnels, initially supported using sprayed concrete linings. The rear grouting injections were carried out at a typical distance of minimum 5m above the completed, fully strengthened shotcrete lining hence inducing some additional stresses. In-tunnel monitoring using surveying targets was performed systematically to ensure that no excessive distortion of the initial shotcrete lining occurred. 3D finite element analyses were utilized to back calculate the actual “effective” pressure that was imposed on the completed shotcrete rings against the additional measured in-tunnel displacements due to the compensation grouting episodes. Additionally an assessment of the theoretical, “maximum” allowable grouting pressures that would lead to overstressing of the lining is presented. INTRODUCTION As part of the back analysis performed for the SEM tunnels in Farringdon station, an investigation of the effect of compensation grouting on the two constructed platform tunnels was undertaken. The platform tunnels were 10.6m high by 11.4m wide and approximately 300m long each. They were enlarged to their final shape from the existing TBM tunnels using SCL methods. This study utilized 2D and 3D finite element (FE) analyses in order to back calculate the observed tunnel crown displacement, assessing the equivalent grouting pressures during the rear injection episodes of the concurrent grouting operations. The results provide a useful reference for the order of magnitude of the grouting pressure load cases that can be applied in the numerical simulation of similar cases. Part of the results presented in this paper, were derived by the second author as part of his Master of Science thesis in Technical University of Graz."

The amount of hydrophobic materials constituting the mineral froth strongly influences the froth viscosity. Higher froth viscosity on the other hand can retard the drainage of physically carried over hydrophobic particles. In phosphate flotation tests a direct correlation was observed between froth viscosity and recovery and an inverse correlation between froth viscosity and grade. Phosphate flotation tests in the presence of a silica depressant indicated that higher froth viscosity is an effect rather than a cause of silica particles reporting in the froth.

Cement raw materials used in southern California and Arizona cement plants occur in a wide variety of geologic environments. Limestone, the primary material making up 75-80% of the raw materials mix used in cement manufacture, is mined solely from Paleozoic Era deposits. During this time, 570-245 million years ago, vastly more limestone was formed in California and Arizona than at any other time (continent was in southern latitudes). The general geology of each limestone deposit associated with the eight southern California and two Arizona cement plants will be reviewed. Many of these deposits are geologically complex, having been subjected to Mesozoic deformation, metamorphism and instrusive events, along with Cenozoic uplift and deformation. All of the cement plants in this region require the use of secondary additives in order to meet the chemical requirements for cement. The kinds of additives vary greatly, depending upon the chemistry of the limestone deposit, cement specifications, and the cement manufacturing process. In some cases, clay deposits with suitable chemistry on or near the limestone sources are utilized. Where alkali limitations or need for alumina-rich materials exist, then specialty clay deposits are used. Iron-rich sources in the region include iron ore deposits and slag or mill scale from local steel mills. The geologic setting and location of these additives, along with gypsum and silica-rich deposits presently in use, will be mentioned.

Given: the process tonnage, performance objectives, and plant floor area, the paper will outline the metallurgical and machine hydrodynamic scale-up procedures for translating the lab flotation test results to the design of a full size flotation machine installation, including the machine number, size, and arrangement. Machine selection considerations for rougher, scavenger and cleaner duty, and special considerations relative to specific applications, will be summarized where appropriate. The value of kinetic modeling in quantitative metallurgical (lab to full size machine) scale-up will be reviewed considering a coal installation, and design information for additional applications such as copper, molybdenum, iron, phosphate, and potash will be discussed.

A specialized Pore-Fluid Array sampler (PFA) was designed to collect and store pore-fluids to monitor temporal changes of ions and gases in gas hydrate bearing sediments. We tested the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry records hydrate formation or decomposition events and reflects local seismic activity. The PFA is a seafloor probe that consists of an interchangeable instrument package that houses OsmoSamplers, long-term pore-fluid samplers; a specialized low-dead volume fluid coupler; and eight sample ports along a 10-meter sediment probe shaft. The PFA was deployed at Mississippi Canyon 118, a Gulf of Mexico hydrate site. A 160-day record was acquired from the overlying water (OLW) and 1.3 meters below seafloor (mbsf). Fluids were measured for dissolved chloride, sulfate, and methane concentrations and dissolved inorganic carbon and methane stable carbon and deuterium isotope ratios. Chloride and sulfate did not change significantly over time, suggesting the absence of gas hydrate formation or decomposition events. Over the temporal record, methane concentrations averaged 4 mM at 1.3 mbsf and was thermogenic in origin (d13C-CH4 = -32.4±3.4?). The timing of an anomalous 14 mM methane spike coincided with a nearby earthquake (Mw=5.8), consistent with the hypothesis that pore-fluid chemistry reflects seismic events. Glass is one of man&apos;s most versatile creations. ---The earliest glaze known---is about 12,000 B.C. ---The oldest pure glass is a moulded amulet of about 7,000 B.C.---. Indicative of a knowledge of properly-proportioned, quality raw-material, means were found for producing the first relatively clear, transparent glass at about the beginning of the Christian era. The fundamentals of almost all the modern, technical processes of manufacture were established during the 3rd Century. (1) Glassmaking, practiced in Colonial America, was moved toward the Ohio Valley in response to increasing demands for fuel. This move, beginning in the 1860&apos;s resulted in the use of the glass sands contained in the Oriskany (and St. Peter) sandstone. (2) Glass sand,(3) virtually pure, fine-to-medium-grained quartz sand(4) is the principal raw material used in the manufacture of glass; it constitutes proportions which range to a maximum of about 72% and seldom is glass made without it. However, acceptable glass sands are, invariably, those which most nearly fit the glass-producer&apos;s economic needs and any method used to evaluate a raw material&apos;s potential must finally prove equatable with such needs. As used in the United States, source-rocks of glass sand include sandstone, unconsolidated silica sands, quartzites and vein-quartz. Admixtures of silica sand and other (principally clay and feldspar), readily separable components have been proven viable. However, the silica sand, refined by nature to a high degree of purity, is the desirable product of exploration. If the term, standard, is justified by long-continued use, the Oriskany - and St. Peter sandstones are, together, the nonesuch of the glass sand industry they provide the principal tonnage of melting sand. According to Grimsley,(5) Ottawa, Illinois, glass-sand is considered the standard glass-sand of the West and the analyses of Berkeley Springs sand (Oriskany) compare most favorably with this sand.
