A coupled solid and rock fracture mechanics model is used to analyze the blast driven fracture propagation phase, predict propagation rates, and directly measure shockwave and particle velocity. The study incorporates quasi-static pre-stress conditions for different depths below the surface. The scaled experiments include dynamic material properties and quasi-dynamic fracture mechanics which are shown to significantly affect the fracture propagation. The study was performed using three-dimensional cube-type laboratory models fabricated from Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). The test cubes are loaded with explosives and resulting fracture networks are studied. The dynamic evaluation of the spatial crack system is monitored using a high speed image camera. An experimental model set-up is designed to indicate the pre-stress effect on deep borehole blasting and is shown that the pre-stress conditions have a decisive influence on fracture profiles and orientation. It is found that shockwaves rapidly exceed the slower dynamic fractures and a majority of cracks occur due to detonation pressure. Experimental testing using different parameters validate that explosive fracturing can predict the outcome of fracture and crack propagation in any rock type with known material properties. This can be accomplished under great stress conditions deep below ground surface. The experimental study results can be applied to a variety of industries such as mining and quarrying, tunneling, oil and gas, and construction.

In another situation, Dave Zegeer, the Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, whom all of you know very well, would have taken the opportunity to talk with you. In his absence, however, I would like to reference some of his recent comments which may help us to see the issue of mine safety in historical perspective. Dave pointed out that this year is the eightieth anniversary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco. The whole world heard about that disaster--it and the 452 people who died in it. In that same year, nearly five times as many people died in coal mines, but no one particularly noticed.

Fine Coal Cleaning Processes including froth flotation, aggregative flotation or oil agglomeration, depend upon the wettability of coal particles in the aqueous solution. The wettability of coals of various ranks, hydrocarbon oil treated coals and oil-agglomerates have been measured using film flotation, induction timer, and froth flotation. Various hydrocarbon collector dispersion techniques are used to alter the surface wettability of coal particles. Change in wettability behaviors, measured by flotation responses, due to various ranks with or without of hydrocarbon collector modification are explained in terms of surface chemistry modifications as analyzed by induction time, film flotation as well as DRIFT Spectroscopy. The relationship between the wettability of coals and collector treated coals, and floatability are discussed.

Dwindling economic deposits of rutile (TiO2) prompted research on recovering it from secondary sources. One such resource is in Southwestern Turkey feldspar mining rejects that contain 5%-6% TiO2 mostly rutile. Previous studies could only upgrade the TiO2 to 36% TiO2 grade, claiming that the leftover flotation reagents on the surfaces of rutile and host minerals detrimentally affected upgrading of the rutile. As a potential remedy to this concern, a laboratory sample (from an operating feldspar mine in Milas, Turkey) was first caustic scrubbed, then air calcined at 400°C to evaporate the oily reagents. Subsequent physical separation of rutile included wet screening, gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation technologies. Such processes indeed improved the grade of the rutile concentrate up to 83 % TiO2 Low recovery of the TiO2 (<20%), was attributed to lack of full liberation of rutile, even at 125x44 micron range; interference with impurity minerals such as sphene and zircon; and simply the process inefficiency in upgrading the fine grains through conventional separation technologies for heavy minerals.

The practical and effective pulp distributor here presented is believed to be of a completely new and innovative design. It was developed at the San Nicolas Plant of the Marcona Mining Company in Peru, where it has been thoroughly plant tested using iron ore slurries of a particularly abrasive nature. It has proven to be superior to the apparatus originally installed, or to any observed in operation elsewhere. In plant practice the capacity and efficiency of many process units such as screens, magnetic separators, and jigs are strongly affected by the loading pattern, and for better results the flow of pulp must be proportioned across the receiving lip in equal quantities per unit width. The distributors originally installed on the drum magnetic separators in San Nicolas proved to be unsatisfactory, and several trial modifications failed to show any improvement. As is usually the case, feed rates were being steadily increased, and appreciable losses to tailings resulted. A check of the distributors on the market discloses no reasonable substitute, so efforts were directed toward devising an entirely new type. Required was a positive type of action which would guarantee that the pulp flow be spread equally along the length of the drum. Discussion As indicated, the motivation for development was simple necessity. The plant in San Nicolas crushes, grinds, and concentrates magnetic iron ores of a particularly abrasive nature, and depends largely on magnetic separation to obtain a marketable product. Feed to the numerous drum magnetic cobbers and finishers varies from rod mill discharge at a nominal minus ten mesh to a ball mill fine grind of seventy percent minus three hundred and twenty-five mesh. This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

TBM (TBM) mining in urban areas particularly under low overburden is a big challenge to design and excavate. During excavation of the Lucknow Metro project, in Uttar Pradesh, India the metro authorities encountered a design stretch where the TBM had to cross a sewer canal crossing of 15 m length under overburden of less than 1 m. Not only the stability of TBM due to uplift was of concern but also the stability of both banks. Most structures on the canal banks were non-engineered structures whose stability due to vibration of TBM was also of concern. Due to these risks, a method was proposed that met stability requirements for both ground and superstructures. The design was practical and cost effective to construct, and a collaborative exercise between the client, contractor and designer that took approximately 18 months to implement.

Cement copper is ordinarily converted to marketable metal by processing in a conventional smelter and refinery. Because of rapidly increasing cement copper production and limited excess smelting capacity, other techniques were investigated for preparing marketable copper products. One route was to make copper powder for industrial use. The process scheme employed flotation for rejecting the bulk of the impurities, acid leaching to remove residual iron and aluminum, reduction sintering to eliminate oxygen, and grinding to obtain powder. Another route was to sinter the floated and leached copper into the form of anodes and electrolyze these to yield refined copper cathodes. At a current density of 30 amperes per square foot, power consumption for electrorefining was 185 kwhr per ton of copper. The feasibility of preparing commercial-size anodes by sintering is still to be assessed.

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy&apos;s program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

The G2 real-time expert system, a commercial product since 1988, is widely deployed in process, manufacturing and other industries. A number of innovative applications are installed or under development in the mining and metallurgical industries. These include: ? A chemical reagent control system for a mineral concentrator, at a mining company; ? A supervisory control system for a product dryer, at a surface coal mine ? A training system for equipment operators, at a steel mill; ? A scheduling system for furnaces at a hot rolling mill; ? A simulation system for mining operations; ? Several graduate-level research projects in materials handling at a university Realized and projected benefits will be discussed. In addition certain applications installed or under development in other industries will be proposed as applicable in mining and metallurgy. For example, applications for the management of vehicular traffic may find use in mining and shipping.

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

This paper, in its first part, compares the profile and economic weight in the extraction of industrial minerals and aggregates to the so called conventional mining activities (metals, coal, gas and oil extraction) in Brazil. In its second part, a descriptive analysis of the present situation of the education in Brazil is made, emphasizing the graduation and post-graduation formation especially in engineering. The curricular structure of the schools that prepare the mining workforce is discussed and the presence of specific subjects in industrial minerals is evaluated. Finally, considerations are made on the actions being taken in the main universities and companies, aiming to improve the formation of the specialized workforce. The Brazilian mining production, comparing 2010 to 2011 showed an expansion of more than 3% (IBGE, 2012). Not bad, but nothing to do with the 13% growth between 2010 and 2009 (influenced by a recovery effect from the 2008 commodities? nightmare). The commodities that had a rising behavior were titanium, gypsum, nickel, graphite, bauxite, phosphate, chrome and chrysotile. All of them were eclipsed by the impressive growth of iron ore production. Some decreases could be noticed, eg. in zinc, kaolin, magnesite and salt production (DNPM, 2012). In fact, the mining activities followed the positive growth of the country these last 5 years. The commercial balance (exports against imports) was not spectacular (positive in US$ 30 billion in 2010). It is important to notice that the mineral commodities balance was US$ 35 billion, representing 27.4% of the total exports and 15.6% of the total imports of Brazil (DNPM, 2012). In this positive environment, the workforce in Brazil showed progress in number of formal jobs and average revenues.

Presentation of the project Underground civil works to be performed They include two single track running tunnels and a service tunnel of a length of fifty kilometers . Many cross adits (180 adits) : to link the tunnels (53 cross passages), to relieve air super pressure from one tunnel to the other (87 piston ducts), to install technical adits (40 electrical rooms). Two cross-overs located at one third of the whole length, allow trains to shunt from one tunnel to the other so as to ensure one way traffic in case of emergency. Pumping stations allow water to be collected at the lowest point and pumped out. 1 Main features of the tunnels 1.1 The service tunnel This 4.8 m inner diameter gallery allows During civil works - front probing operations of the geological layers encountered (front and vertical probes). - lateral soil grouting that may be necessary to facilitate the boring of the two running tunnels . It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, CWP and silicosis are major concerns. While there have been many studies aimed at understanding total dust concentrations and silica content associated with different mining conditions (e.g., locations/occupations within a mine, cutting methods, geologic strata), little research has been completed to more comprehensively characterize respirable dust (i.e., by particle composition, size distributions, shapes). This preliminary study sought to characterize dust from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX). Respirable dust samples were collected from various locations in the study mine, and individual dust particles were identified and classified by mineral type. A continuous personal dust monitor was also used to estimate total respirable dust concentrations during sampling. Here we report initial results of this work, and discuss advantages and challenges of particle-level characterization of mine dusts in terms of occupational health research.

Anthracite mine refuse, or culm dump material as it is sometimes called, is the waste material resulting from the sizing and cleaning of run-of-mine deep and strip-mined anthracite coal. It may also contain mine rock, carbonaceous shale, pyrite, and other debris from mining operations. This material is generally stored in piles or banks, some of which are over 100 years old. Many of the older banks contain a considerable amount of good coal, particularly in the finer size ranges, since these sizes did not have any particular economic value in the early days of anthracite mining. Today, the refuse material from a cleaning operation must be piled in an orderly fashion and in such a way as to minimize the tendency to ignite. There are well over 400 of these banks in the anthracite region containing over 1100 million tons of refuse located in the north-eastern part of Pennsylvania. Fire accident is one of the most classic safety concerns in underground mines both in the USA and abroad. It may occur from pool fires due to leakages in hose or pipes, vehicle fires, or fires in tires and conveyor belts in the underground mines. It may also result from the storage of flammable materials such as gasoline, diesel, and explosives in the underground. When fire occurs in an underground mine, it releases heat, smoke, and other toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, and methane to the surrounding thereby making life unbearable to the miners. Furthermore, smoke greatly impact visibility in the underground which makes evacuation even more onerous and challenging. To this end, a thorough investigation of fire behavior and spread of toxic gases in a practical underground mine is imperative to develop a reliable emergency evacuation plan in an event of fire disaster in the underground mine. The objective of this study is to investigate temperature variation and CO spread along mine airways by conducting full-scale fire experiment in the underground mine. The results presented from this study are crucial to developing evacuation plans in underground mines. In addition, the findings from this study could be used to validate existing evacuation models.

Coal quality control in mining and mine planning has always been important and has become even more essential in recent years due to environmental considerations. The primary consumers of the sub-bituminous coals found in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming are electric utilities that require low sulfur coals to meet government air quality regulations. Electric generating plants are designed to burn coal of a specific quality, and the supplier of that coal must be able to guarantee shipments within specified quality tolerances. Over the past several years, Exxon Coal USA and, more recently, The Carter Mining Company, a division of Exxon Coal USA have established an evaluation and development program to accurately define the geology and quality of their coal properties. This requires an adequate drill hole density so that detailed correlations of the coal seam and the lithologic sub-units, of the coal seam can be made. These units must be recognizable in the core and also on geophysical logs.

Constant improvement in stripping machines and techniques of using them is needed to offset rising costs and to increase production in mines that are now operating, and to make it economically possible to work deeper or thinner deposits.

Virtually all fluorine consumed by the aluminum industry is as the electrolyte of the Hall-Heroult process for producing primary aluminum. A small amount of fluorspar is used but most fluorine is consumed as either aluminum fluoride or cryolite. Some fluorine- containing materials are used in secondary aluminum production, but the amount is negligible compared with primary production requirements. Any analysis of the future of the primary aluminum industry must take into account two powerful and closely related driving forces which are shaping that future. These factors are increasingly stringent restrictions on the emission of pollutants and the continuing cost-price squeeze. Nowhere do these factors combine more forcefully than in the area of fluorine consumption. We can safely assume that industry efforts to reduce fluorine consumption will be intensified and that these efforts will be fruitful. This paper will attempt to identify and quantify the factors and trends of fluorine consumption during the next decade. We will be concerned primarily with the demand for new fluorine. Sources of new fluorine will not be treated.

Plans for a large industrial development in the Upper Ohio Valley between Moundsville and New Martinsville, West Virginia, were announced in the Fall of 1955. This development consisted of a large aluminum plant to be .built by Olin-Mathieson; a 675,000 KW power plant to be constructed by the American Electric Power Service; and a large coal mine adjacent to the power plant to be developed by the Hanna Coal Company Division of Consolidation Coal Company. The Ireland Mine was designed to efficiently supply fuel for the power plant, and this was the first consideration in the location of facilities, design, and development of plant and the selection of the equipment. The first problem was to find a suitable area for the surface facilities. A level bottom area south of the power plant was reserved for future industrial plants and this area was also blocked off from the coal reserves by an old abandoned and flooded mine. The coal storage facilities of the power plant were on the north side of the plant and it was decided to locate the coal mine preparation plant on-the shoulder of a hill above the power plant. This location required the excavation of 70,000 yards of rock but permitted the driving of a belt slope from the plant at an angle so that the haulage roads underground would miss the abandoned Cresap Mine. This location also permitted the plant to be located at an elevation so that the conveyors leaving the plant were horizontal and had sufficient clearance above the highway and railroad tracks. The other surface facilities consisting of air shafts, supply slope, supply yard, office, bathhouse, shop and warehouse were located in the valley some distance north of the preparation plant. This location placed these facilities one mile nearer to the working area. Plans for design and development of the mine were started in November 1955; grading and clearing of surface area was started in January 1956; the air shafts and slopes were started in the Spring and Summer of 1956; and the first coal was produced from the supply slope in October 1956. The preparation plant was put in operation in March 1958, and by July 1959 was producing 8,000 tons per day.
