And the verdict is — If the manufacturer’s recommendations have been followed, good. If not, owners/operators should begin periodic service work on equipment, to help minimize equipment downtime and extend engine life.

The Construction Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers recently published the second edition of a 1997 publication on geotechnical baseline reports. The new publication, called Geotechnical Baseline Reports for Construction, Suggested Guidelines, represents a 2-year effort that adds three new chapters to the original publication, as well as capturing practitioner commentary through two industry workshop sessions. The paper will overview the contents of the new publication, particularly the three new chapters.

It is particularly challenging for the mining industry to create and implement an efficient and adaptable mining innovation model to secure the continuous improvement of processes and products via technology. Human resource departments must play a vital role in shifting the mining culture, enabling these new classes of digitally skilled professionals to manage the mining operations of the future. This paper proposes the implementation of a concept based on the 5S mining innovation model ((a) Nieto, 2019), in a coal mining project in Central Asia, Mongolia. Practical and empirical evidence suggests that the model could serve as a roadmap to developing technologies and methods for the mines of the future.

Any mining or engineering-construction excavation that extends below the water table must be dewatered. In many situations, the ground is of low permeability or the workings extend only a short distance below the water table. So water removal can be handled easily and economically by using mobile centrifugal pumps. However, there is an increasing number of mines that have a continuous high flow of water into the workings. Controlling this flow can significantly increase the cost of ore production. Successful implementation of any major dewatering scheme will ultimately rely on a clear understanding of the local geology. This understanding is necessary before an interpretation of ground water conditions can be made. It will dictate which dewatering methods are feasible. Once the geology and the ground water system are known, the scope and timing of the dewatering measures can be varied with the mine plan. Ground water modeling can assist in optimizing the dewatering system, though the precise objective of each model should be clearly defined. Production wells must be sited and drilled so that individual well efficiencies are high. Any lost efficiencies will translate into higher operating costs. Each well must be designed for maximum long-term control of the water table, and pumps sized to operate under continually changing heads. Finally, the investment in each production well must be protected during the mining process.

The Expert System implemented at the East-Malartic mill controls a copper flotation circuit while taking into account the profitability of the operation. Treating a copper gold ore, the flow sheet integrates a flotation step followed by cyanide leach circuit. The Expert System calculates the actual net smelter revenue of the flotation circuit, accounts for the operating cost of the cyanidation circuit and defines optimal metallurgical operating targets to optimize the overall economics. To be realistic, probability factors and circuit diagnostic analysis are integrated in the operating target selection. The Expert System has proved to be successful, robust and flexible. It resulted in a copper concentrate grade increase of 1% while maintaining recovery. The use of the expert system also gives plant personnel good training procedures and promotes interaction with mill operator.

For most industrial minerals, the color is directly associated with economic value. In terms of physics, the principal property that defines the term ?color? is the intensity of light reflected (or transmitted) by an object over the visible band, comprehended between 400 and 700 nm. This reflectance spectrum serves as the starting point for a variety of color-describing factors, the most common in the mineral industry being the brightness (TAPPI, 1977 and 1986) and the L*a*b* system (HunterLab, 2008). Quality specifications for mineral products are usually based on these colorimetric parameters. This market is becoming increasingly more selective and demanding over the quality of raw materials and alongside the traditionally controlled characteristics, such as particle size distribution and chemical composition, a trend exists towards the establishment of increasingly more strict specifications for the optical properties of these materials. This is due to the fact that most plants consuming these industrial minerals incorporate them into products in which the visual appearance is controlled. For these plants, most of them being the manufacturers of plastics, paper, paints, and ceramics, variations in the color of mineral materials result in difficulties to achieve the right color in the final product. Therefore, these plants set strict specifications for colorimetric parameters such as whiteness and yellowness, as well as colorimetric coordinates like L*, a*, and b*. For the manufacturer of industrial minerals, this translates into difficulties simply because many of these parameters are usually alien to the tradition of the mining industry. The main quality parameter in the kaolin industry is brightness, which is a weighted average of reflectance values over the range of 400-510 nm (TAPPI, 1977). Due to the lack of a better property, producers tend to use brightness to also assess the quality of the in situ ore and along the processing operations. However, the unprocessed kaolin is often accompanied by ?contaminant? minerals. For Brazilian kaolins, which are the object of this study, the most important contaminants are hematite (Fe2O3), goethite (FeOOH), and anatase (TiO2). Each of these contaminant minerals has a distinct color and behaves differently during the processing of the kaolin ore. Hematite and goethite in particular are particularly strong pigmenting agents and at concentrations as low as 100 ppm they can make the difference between a high-quality white pigment product for paper coating and waste material. As each Fe-bearing contaminant has a different color and responds differently to processing operations (for example, magnetic separation, chemical bleaching, selective flocculation, and/or flotation in the case of kaolin), the in situ brightness tends to show a poor correlation with the brightness of the final product. Brightness measurements are sometimes complemented with X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of Fe and Ti, but the total oxide content provided by XRF is also poorly correlated with product quality because Fe may be in the form of goethite, hematite, or inside the crystalline structure of kaolinite. Thus, a more robust technique capable of distinguishing each mineral phase is desirable. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has been used to analyze iron oxide/hydroxide content both qualitatively (Torrent and Barrón, 2003; Liu et al., 2011) and quantitatively (Jiet al., 2002 and 2006). These authors correlate slopes and inflection points at characteristic absorption bands with oxide/hydroxide content in natural soils. The approach presented here involves the extensive use of the Kubelka-Munk (K-M) theory, which has been used for color matching (Schabbachet al., 2009 and 2011) and particle size determination (Otsuka, 2004) in a simplified version. Unfortunately, the scattering constant S is very difficult to measure for dry powders, because the equations require a thin layer of material. Attempts have been made (Gonçalves and Petter, 2007, and Gonçalves, 2009) but the experimental errors tend to be high. Thus, this paper aims to develop a tool for the quantification of contaminant minerals in kaolin based on the K-M theory without resorting to measurements over thin layers. This tool is based on a new two-constant approach, which takes into account differences in scattering between materials over the whole measured spectrum. The experimental dataset consists of the reflectance spectra of mixtures between a bleached kaolin and synthetic Fe pigments.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. The underground ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant provides unparalleled ability to ensure safety of the workers, public and environment. Although small spatially, it can vary the airflow from 66,000 acfm to 460,000 acfm. It can automatically incorporate HEPA filtration in the event of radioactive contamination. Remote-capable regulators individually control the four main splits, and can be adjusted from the surface if necessary. A ventilation remote monitoring and control system provides real-time information. Future areas of concern include DPM compliance, system psychrometry, logic-based-real-time mine ventilation simulation and automation using PLC technology. This paper discusses the evolution of this system.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. Particle motion in fluids is a subject of considerable practical importance to engineers working in fields such as hydraulics, river mechanics, chemical engineering and mineral processing. Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict the terminal settling velocities of particles in a fluid medium. The selection of an appropriate mathematical model has, therefore, become a challenging task for practicing engineers. This paper reports on an attempt to identify some of the useful models found in the literature for predicting particle-settling velocities in a fluid under free- and hindered-settling conditions. From this study, it was concluded that there is no well-accepted model validated by experimental data available for predicting particle hindered-settling velocities in a suspension of polydisperse and polydens particles. Collective efforts should, therefore, be made towards developing a hindered-settling model, as this is an absolute prerequisite for many model structures in mineral processing and other engineering disciplines.

As global energy demands increase, there will be a critical need to employ fuels that have minimal environmental impacts. While hydrogen is considered the ultimate fuel for that purpose, hydrocarbon based fuels will be in use for a considerable time and will probably be the first major source of hydrogen for next generation power systems. The best fuel for this transition will be natural gas because of the high hydrogen to carbon ratio. Natural gas hydrates have the potential to meet the global energy needs for the foreseeable future. The amount of energy stored in natural gas hydrates is significantly more than that of all the other fossil fuels combined. However, most proposed techniques for recovering the natural gas from the hydrate require too much energy input, raise safety concerns or can only recover a fraction of the gas. This paper discusses the technical feasibility of a novel method of gas production in hydrate reservoirs. The method is an in-situ process that creates a point heat source in the hydrate formation. This method not only significantly reduces the energy input, but also has the potential to sequester as much or more CO2 than would be produced from combustion of the natural gas produced, thus making this in-situ methane production technique virtually carbon neutral. Simulations using FEMLAB™ show that the method offers an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce natural gas from hydrate reservoirs. Preliminary results indicate that it is possible to have an energy efficiency of nearly 90% for land based reservoirs for hydrate loadings of 20%. The simulation results also suggest that alternatives to a point source can be employed which may improve the process efficiency.

Today’s mining occurs in a dynamic world of conflicting objectives. Mining companies have to look further than a traditional cash flow analysis to determine the potential value of developing a mine. In particular, proposals for new mine developments undergo rigorous scrutiny by a variety of stakeholders including regulators, NGO’s, and the local communities. From a business risk perspective, how mining companies address stakeholder concerns can have a dramatic impact on the success of the project. In today’s mining environment mining companies must continue to ‘walk the talk’ to stay in business, particularly during downturns in the business cycle. Falconbridge’s Raglan Mine is an example of a project that was successfully developed in a region that is sensitive from many perspectives, including environmental, socio economic, and regulatory. Close working relationships with local stakeholders along with strong environmental management systems are necessary elements of continued success for the project.

"THE MINES OF THE FUTURE The mines of the future present a host of challenges, which may appear exciting or daunting depending on one’s perspective. Whether some sectors of the public recognize it or not, the demand for raw resources is not going away any time soon. In fact, it is rising as global population grows, urbanizes and attempts to steadily increase quality of life. Yes, at the same time that much of the highly developed world is calling for greener goods, reduced consumption, and cleaner production, in other areas there are cries for clean water and sanitation, consistent energy supply, access to health care and education, personal security, and support for basic human rights. The balancing act for sustainable development of our global society is indeed precarious, and the mining community is necessarily a key player. Fortunately, many industry members have accepted this role and the responsibility to provide leadership and a solid foundation for progress. Looking ahead, we need new generations of leaders, many of whom will be mine engineers, which are ready to tackle all sorts of complex problems. There are tremendous needs just for technological innovations. Increasingly tough deposits will require that we continue to expand scale toward “super” pits and “deep” underground mining fully develop unconventional recovery techniques like in-situ leaching and gasification or deep-sea extraction, and seriously consider off-earth endeavors. Such work will take entirely autonomous equipment; novel separations, processing and recycling methods; and systems that can withstand extreme physical conditions – just to name a few. It will also take a level of systems integration never-before seen in our field, complete with big data issues, sophisticated analytics and modeling efforts, and cyber-security challenges. Moreover, increasingly complex environmental problems will require creative solutions. Addressing issues like pollution control across multiple media, emerging contaminants, optimal management of wastes, selective mining, and shared use of resources between mine operations and surrounding communities and ecosystems are among top priorities. Really, a complete paradigm shift must occur, such that our focus is on overall improvement of environmental conditions, rather than minimization of impacts. A similar shift will be required in the social realm. How can we make miners safer and healthier on-site and off? How can we contribute to communities such that they are better off, now and long-term, for having a mine next door? How can we help transform artisanal mining practices to also contribute to sustainable development? How can our work be a factor in increasing economic and political stability? How can we improve the public understanding of raw resources and the need for mining enterprises?"

? The economic health and national security of the U.S. depends on the continued availability of, and access to, reliable and affordable energy and mineral resources. However, America is hindered by a costly, inefficient and often redundant regulatory structure that thwarts domestic investment, expansion and job creation. The annual cost of federal regulations in the U.S. increased to more than $1.75 trillion in 2008; averaging $8000 per employee.(The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Finns, SBA, 2010) ? The complexity, uncertainty and delays within the current permitting system places the U.S. at a competitive disadvantage with many other countries that have both abundant mineral resources and a more welcoming business and regulatory climate. As a result, American and international mining companies often move overseas or across borders to invest capital, create local employment, and produce the critical minerals America must then import at higher cost, while sacrificing employment and economic stimulus. ? According to Behre Dolbear, the U.S. is ranked lowest globally due to the lengthy permitting period required before mine development can commence. (Where not to Invest, 2010).

Environmental self-monitoring is one of the advanced approaches for industrial sustainability programs. Organization for Economy Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines self-monitoring as ?the system of organizational and technical measures put in place and financed by [the] regulated subject? in order to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements?1. Self-monitoring is beneficial for industrial operators, communities, and governments. Industrial companies use self-monitoring as a central element of their compliance management that allows them to fulfill their duties, obligations, and to avoid citations. When industries control their emissions and ensure workers are not exposed above the regulated limits, communities are better. It is impossible for an EPA, OSHA, or MSHA inspectors to be close to every emission source or workplace full-time. It is much more effective for industries to self-monitor, under due supervision. Occupational conditions are a very important part of industry and health and safety self-monitoring should be highly prioritized. In this paper we will research the regulatory basis and best practice of occupational self-monitoring. We will show that not only is self-monitoring a vital element of an occupational health & safety management system, but that you need a management system for affective monitoring.

Grate discharges historically outnumbered the overflow type of industrial wet ball mills. However, overflow discharge mills now strongly dominate. In order to understand their comparative advantages and disadvantages, Corem carried out a broad review of this topic. Where the data made it possible, the Functional Performance Equation was used to separate circuit classification from mill grinding effects. Batch tests were conducted in a torque-metered mill at different slurry levels. This paper presents the outcome of these investigations, which is a very strong case for the industry to once again consider grate discharges.

During the 1920's, approximately 11,000 small gasifiers were in operation in the United States. They converted about 15 million tons of coal per year into low Btu gas. In some cases, hot raw gas was used for applications such as firing open hearth furnaces or brick kilns. In other cases the gases produced in the gasifiers were cooled, cleaned and desulfurized for various utility and industrial purposes. The steel industry was by far the largest user. The most important fact was that the conversion of coal to a usable fuel gas was demonstrated to be commercial. During the late 1940's and early 1950's, this form of energy was largely replaced by natural gas as the pipeline net work was expanded. Producer gas was no longer economically competitive. Over the past twenty-five (25) years, government controls on the interstate price of natural gas have maintained this situation. At present only three commercial small coal gasifier plants are still in operation in the United States. These facilities are operated by the Glen-Gery Corporation which is located in eastern Pennsylvania; the National Lime and Stone Company which is located at Carey Ohio; and Holston Defense Corporation which is located at Kingsport, Tennessee. There are, however, numerous operating gasifiers in other parts of the world. Recent events indicate that this situation is changing. The quantity of domestic natural gas available to the interstate market has been declining at the same time that demand for all forms of energy has been increasing. The current potential market for gas with a heating value ranging from 100 to 500 Btu per cubic feet has been estimated at sixteen (16) quads (16 x 1015 Btu) per year. This is expected to grow to twenty (20) quads by the year 2000.

AMAX Coal Company's Belle Ayr coal dryer is the first industry attempt to commercialize sub-bituminous coal drying which has been the subject of laboratory and pilot plant tests for almost two decades. This paper presents the historical background, construction, start-up and operation of this adaption of fluidized bed coal drying technology to Powder River Basin coal. The flowsheet and operational problems encountered during plant start-up are discussed together with general material balance and product quality.
