INTRODUCTION Coal gold agglomeration (CGA) is a new concept in gold processing. It involves the recovery of oleophilic (oil-loving) gold grains by causing them to adhere selectively to the surfaces of coal oil agglomerates. Under optimum conditions very high recoveries of gold. can be achieved. The agglomerates are recycled to build up gold loading to typically 1000 - 5000 g/tonne. Bullion can be produced by burning the loaded agglomerates with subsequent recovery of gold from the highly loaded ash either by dissolution/electrowinning or smelting. A wide-ranging programme of laboratory testwork has been performed to investigate the response of different ore types to the process. This has shown CGA to be most applicable to ores in which the gold is liberated or easily liberatable, relatively coarse (ca 500 µm) and fine (<5 µm) gold grains being recoverable with equal ease. The best opportunities for CGA seem to be: • placers containing fine gold not recoverable by gravity concentration • low grade gravity concentrates to avoid multiple magnetic/gravity separation stages and amalgamation • free milling ores where the gold can be liberated at a reasonable ore particle size eg >d80 50 µm • tailings past or present from gravity concentration plants. CGA testwork ranging in scale from laboratory to pilot plant on tailings produced by gravity concentration in the 19th century Australian gold rush has already been reported (Bonney, C F, 1988; House, C I, Townsend, I C and Veal, C J, 1988). An economic appraisal for a Canadian free milling gold ore has also been published (Buckley, S A, House, C I and Townsend, I G, 1989). This paper describes results of a detailed laboratory programme to assess CGA as a means of recovering gold from a beach sand deposit in New Zealand. The area from which the samples were taken consists of quarternary interglacial marine, lagoonal, fluvial and eolian deposits. The heavy minerals present are predominantly ilmenite and garnet and small concentrations of gold. In certain locations the sands and gravels are consolidated by a limonitic cement. In the 19th Century some parts of the deposit were mined and the ore processed using stamp milling and gravity concentration. Gold recoveries were low, probably below 50%, due primarily to the fine size of the gold grains, the flaky nature of the gold and also imperfect liberation by the stamp mills. Our laboratory testwork was divided into three parts: i) Preliminary studies on an initial sample to assess the feasibility of treating the ore by CGA ii) Extended studies on further samples from various locations in the deposit to confirm predictions from (i) iii) Conventional gold recovery techniques. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES All CGA tests were performed by agitating a slurry of ore in water in a 0.6 dm3 pyrex beaker fitted with four vertical baffles. When required, potassium amyl xanthate collector was added and the slurry conditioned for 5 min. Coal (ex BP Coal Australia&apos;s Tahmoor Colliery) previously ground to a d80 50 µm was added followed by a commercial grade of gas oil (density 840 kg/m3). The agglomeration time was 30 min. The agglomerates were separated from the tailings by screening, both were then dried and analysed for gold by fire assay. This test procedure provides a reasonably accurate estimate of gold recoveries that might be expected from our 1 tph pilot plant. INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. The movement of air from the surface, through the workings and then back to the surface, is the most important consideration in the ventilation design. The purpose of mine ventilation is seen as the maintenance of acceptable atmospheric environments wherever men work or travel underground; and acceptability is related to the risk of harmful biological responses associated with exposure to atmospheric environments in mines. In mine ventilation, a design engineer often has to contend with a number of problems not experienced to the same degree in other industrial situations; i.e. the vast extent of many workings - offering continuously moving work locations; the difficulty of predicting. inflows of contaminants to the airways which contain the micro-environment; and especially, the effect of mining activity within the duct system (e.g. mine roadways) carrying the airflow. Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported from the mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits very from area to area and between different mines. 1 In uranium mining, in addition to eliminating noxious gases from blasting, diesel equipment exhaust, and the control of dust, it is also necessary to dilute and remove radon, the gaseous element in the uranium chain and its decay products. Long term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia have confirmed that there is an association between excessive ex¬posure to radon daughters and an increased risk of lung cancer. The common practices for controlling these airborne contaminants are: (1) the circulation of large volumes of fresh air from surface to dilute these contaminants to a permissible concentration, and (2) the sealing of worked-out areas to prevent ingress of radon into ventilating air. 2 The sealing of worked-out areas can be easily and effectively accomplished, but the contaminants intro¬duced from the workings may raise the concentrations in the airways despite a good ventilation system and use of the maximum available amount of fresh air. The ventilating air can be strategically filtered to reduce dust and radon daughters to acceptable levels, and reused prior to final discharge. This strategy properly applied, will decrease the air colume requirements in certain marginal areas of the mine and thereby avoid an overall increase in the mine airflow. This is particularly advantageous in the cold climates of Canada, where the incoming fresh air must be heated in the winter months to a comfortable temperature, Thus, an economical and technically feasible air filtration system, strategically placed, can improve the underground mining environment and reduce the overall cost of ventilating the mines. In addition to affording flexibilty to the venti¬lation system, a potential saving of $1,500/m3/s/year would be realized if air is successfully cleaned and reused when compared with the conventional methods of generating an air current. 3 Denison is justly proud of its achievements in the air filtration technology development. This paper limits itself to an examination of the radiation control aspect of the air filtration strategy.

Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn&apos;t "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark&apos;s Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today&apos;s dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

The South African mining industry currently installs about 6 km per month of plastic pipes for conveying compressed air and water. Plastic pipes have a number of desirable properties and are favoured by many mining engineers because of their low mass, which facilitates ease of erection and assembly, and their excellent corrosion resistance and durability. However, they are combustible, and if involved in an underground fire can contribute to the overall toxicity of the combustion gases emitted. Furthermore, plastic pipes have the potential to conduct a fire from one part of a mine to another, and, by so doing, exacerbate an already hazardous situation. The limitations of small scale tests and the need to establish a large facility where underground conditions could be simulated was recognized by the South African mining industry. This paper briefly describes the Industry&apos;s full scale fire test facility and presents the conclusions drawn as a result of a number of full scale combustibility tests conducted on pipes manufactured from unplasticized Poly Vinyl Chloride (uPVC) and High Density Polyethylene (HDPE). Based on these findings, some practical solutions to prevent the spread of fire along the length of pipe columns of various pipe diameters and suspension configurations are presented. Recently some new and exciting developments in the field of intumescent coatings have occurred which are proving effective in minimizing the incidence of fire underground on South African mines. The potential benefits of these coatings are briefly discussed. INTRODUCTION Plastic pipes used underground on mines are predominantly in the form of protective cladding on insulated chilled water pipes and as service pipes for the conveying of water and compressed air to the workings. Plastic pipes have found wide use in the aggressive environmental conditions encountered underground due to their favourable properties relative to steel; these include being lightweight, easily installed and virtually immune to corrosion. However, plastic pipes are inherently combustible and can contribute to the overall hazard in three ways: (i) they are easily ignitable and can provide the initial fuel for a fire. (ii) once ignited, they can propagate a fire along their length and by so doing ignite other combustibles in their path, thereby contributing significantly to the overall conflagration. (iii) they can contribute to the overall heat, smoke and toxic gas emissions from a fire. While conscious of the value of small scale fire tests, the South African mining industry recognized the need for full scale testing to determine the combustion characteristics of plastic pipes under conditions closely approximating those underground and, as a consequence, a full scale fire tunnel test facility was commissioned with the objective of being able to (a), accurately evaluate the potential hazard of the various types of the plastic pipes found in mines, (b) use this information to suggest suitable fire engineering practices to minimize the hazard and (c), to practically verify the efficacy of the practices suggested. THE FIRE TUNNEL The fire tunnel is situated on a mine in the Western Transvaal and is 40 m long with a cross section of 3 m x 3 m which is typical of many haulages currently in use in South African gold mines. The ventilation drawn through the tunnel is provided by a 110 kW centrifugal exhaust fan and air velocities can be varied from 0 to a maximum of 5,8 m/s.

There are many reasons why the US mineral and primary metals industry is in its present state. Undoubtedly, a flood of imported goods in all sectors is playing a major role in the plight of our raw materials industry. Domestic industry is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of its international competitiveness. And we are beginning to wonder what is happening to our technological edge. A number of factors affect the international competitiveness. Engineers cannot do much about some of these factors - labor costs, tax policy, government relations, interest rates, dollar strength, and labor-management relations. Something can be done about technology, however. Some say technology is so easily transferable today. But I would like to believe that we have the ability to apply it better than others. Not too many years ago, "made in Japan" meant cheap and shoddy products. Today, Japan has completely changed its image. The US is beginning to feel the threat from Japan&apos;s low-cost, defect-free products with dependable delivery. With worldwide recession and the strength of the dollar, we were shocked at the sudden weakness that developed in America&apos;s industries, not only in the international market, but domestically as well. What went wrong and what can we do about it? Senior executives from 300 large American manufacturing companies were surveyed. These executives believe US companies must: • invest in more efficient plants and equipment (27%); • invest in more research and development (23%); • improve the quality of service to customers (23%); and • adopt more aggressive marketing tactics and strategies (14%). Are we not doing enough research? The US has nearly four times as many people engaged in research and spends four times as much for research as Japan (Fig. 1). There is little doubt about the excellence of the US performance in basic science as indicated by the number of Nobel prize recipients. Japan has produced only four winners since World War II. Look at technology trade of five countries (Fig. 2). Again, US performance has been remarkable. An interesting observation here, is that the United Kingdom, another country with economic woes, is also in the black, West Germany and Japan, both with trade surpluses, are net technology importers. It is apparent that the US&apos; performance in the commercialization of new knowledge is much more in question. Japan had $50 billion of trade surpluses with the US last year, which led to some friction between Washington, DC and Tokyo. Comparing the technology trade of Japan and the US in more detail, Japan imports disproportionately large amounts of technology from the US and Europe. This data is rather old, 1978, but the general trend is not too different even today. It is generally believed that scientific research leads to innovative technology, then to economic payoff. But, after seeing the current technological challenge by Japan, we are forced to change this traditional view. Investment in research may eventually lead to economic payoff, but not directly. There is a middle ground between new knowledge and its commercialization. This is an area where the Japanese have been successful. Until the 1970s, many western companies licensed patents to Japan for quick profits. But, in recent years, these companies have become more discrete about the terms of technological transfer. As a result, a number of scientists and engineers are expressing deep concern over the future of technological developments in Japan. A survey was conducted on 450 research managers of private industries in Japan on how they viewed the level of breakthroughtype original research in Japan as

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau&apos;s research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. Introduction The Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt in California extends from Mariposa north for more than 420 km (200 miles). It includes the Grass Valley and Alleghany districts in the zone of Northern Mines and the famous Mother Lode to the south. The gold belt has produced more than 3.1 kt (100 million oz) of gold since its discovery in 1848. This remarkable production, at the present gold price, would be valued at more than $40 billion. The Law of Gambler&apos;s Ruin supposes that averages are based on systematic rather than random variations. It emphasizes the vast differences between finite and infinite probability. By applying this Law to this figure, it can be seen that the belt has produced an average of 15.5 t (500,000 oz) of gold per running mile. Many geologists believe, with some justification, that less than half the gold in this belt has been mined. Sixty per cent of the past production has come from lode deposits, the balance from Tertiary and Recent placer gravels. This paper will concern itself with the developing lode mines along the Sierra Nevada Foothill Gold Belt. As a further and final note regarding placer mining along this belt, Mark Twain suggested that placer miners, having lost their senses, had contributed liberally to the population of California&apos;s insane asylums. After a 40-year lull with little or no gold production, the lode mines of this famous belt are showing signs of renewed activity. Two open pit mines, the Sonora (Jamestown) and Carson Hill, are now in operation at substantial scales. Two others, the Goldenbell (Pine Tree-Josephine) and the Royal-Mountain King, are being readied for production on equally impressive scales. All are in the southern part of the Mother Lode. Exploration farther north, at Sutter Creek, Drytown, and Georgetown, is showing encouraging results in developing deeper lode deposits. This new activity has been sponsored to a large extent by junior Canadian mining and exploration companies. Most of the established American mining companies have looked the other way, not participating in this important development. One major reason for domestic disinterest in this opportunity is there is little chance for heap leachable open pit ore in this belt, excluding Carson Hill. And heap leaching has become fashionable with American mining companies today. Also, this great old gold belt must have been worked out, for why else is there so little activity here - Catch 22 logic. Another reason is that if a new deposit of size and grade similar to the mines in the past was found, high costs would preclude a profitable operation. And, finally, California environmentalists would not permit mining, even if a rich deposit were found. These may all be pefectly valid reasons not to explore for gold along this belt. But a look at the history of gold mining in California may suggest that the future for exploration and development of the gold resources in the Sierra Nevada Foothills can be greater than the past. It was during the Depression of the 1930s that this gold belt saw its maximum activity, with more than 3000 mines in operation. Some were father and son operations producing only a few tons of ore a day. Other mines employed hundreds of miners to hoist more than 900 t/d (1000 stpd). Some ores were of marginal grade. A total transportation system providing for delivery of finished products to customers and raw materials to the plant is one of the key elements contributing to Dravo Lime Co.&apos;s success. Dravo Lime operates one of the largest noncaptive lime and limestone plants in the US at Maysville, KY, where products produced can cost as much to deliver as they do to manufacture, depending on the product itself, its destination, and mode of transportation. With delivery costs comprising a significant portion of total costs for its products, Dravo Lime has made total transportation services an integral part of its business strategy. Prices for most products produced at Maysville are quoted f.o.b. destination. In short, Dravo Lime&apos;s Distribution Department relies on the approach that says to customers: "Leave the delivery to us." The 0.9-Mt/a (1-million stpy) Maysville facility, located about 121 km (75 miles) east of Cincinnati, OH, on the Ohio River, primarily produces sulfur-absorbing Thiosorbic lime used by coal-fired electric utilities as a scrubber reagent to remove SO2 from stack gases. The product is currently supplied to eight power plants in the Ohio River valley region which extends through portions of Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The plant ships approximately 907 kt (1 million st) of lime and a comparable amount of limestone fines each year. In addition, it arranges for delivery of about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal to the plant. Lime is transported by covered hopper barges, covered rail cars, covered dump trucks, and pneumatic trucks. It is transferred from barges to storage silos and trucks at a terminal on the Ohio River near Marietta, OH. At another terminal near Aliquippa, PA, lime is transferred from barges to silos, trucks, and rail cars. Future plans call for rail-truck transfer terminals. To produce lime from limestone at the Maysville plant, about 181 kt (200,000 st) of coal is burned annually in three coal-fired kilns. In transporting this coal from the mine to Maysville, Dravo takes maximum advantage of opportunities for reloading carriers with limestone for outbound backhaul movement. Coal, shipped from southeastern Kentucky mines in rail cars, is transferred to barges at a river terminal in West Virginia. After it is unloaded at Maysville, the barges are cleaned with a front-end loader and then reloaded with limestone. Limestone also is backhauled in connection with truck deliveries of coal. The economics of using backhaul shipments has permitted Dravo to enter into markets in which Maysville limestone otherwise would not be competitive. The company plans to backhaul limestone in empty open hopper cars in the future. As part of its ongoing assessment of the distribution system that supports the Maysville operation, Dravo Lime recognizes that a new environment has developed between shippers and carriers because of regulatory changes in the railroad and trucking industries. Although dry bulk shipments by barge to and from Maysville have always been unregulated, other forms of transportation have not. With railroads and motor carriers now approaching varying degrees of deregulation, contracts and agreements are replacing tariffs, and rate negotiations are becoming a daily activity. Dravo Lime plans to take advantage of these transportation changes, all of which may be beneficial to both its plant and its customers.

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. The use of electrical energy to induce thermal stress was studied by the General Elec¬tric Co., in cooperation with the Montana School of Mines, under a research grant from the Anaconda

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. The accessory minerals are mainly cubanite, arsenopyrite, molybdenite, and native gold and silver. The two largest ore bodies being exploited at pres¬ent by Outokumpu Oy are the Vihanti mine, which pro¬duces zinc, lead, and copper, and Pyhäsalmi, which con¬tains copper and zinc. Introduction Diesel-powered vehicles are used extensively in underground mines throughout North America. The bulk of the diesel vehicles found in underground mining operations are used for loading and ore haulage, as well as for transportation of personnel and supplies. Along with the advantages of using diesels underground is the disadvantage associated with diesel-tailpipe particulate-matter emissions (DPM). The concentration of DPM in the ambient air of US underground metal mines is not now regulated by the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). However, recent studies have shown DPM to be mutagenic (National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, 1988), and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has recommended that the exposures of per¬sonnel to DPM be limited to an 8-hr time-weighted average concentration (threshold limit value or TLV) of 0.15 mg/m3 (Anon., 1995). The authors, while making measurements in a number of US underground mines that use diesel haulage equipment, found mine air DPM concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 2.36 Mg/M3 (McCawley and Cocalis, 1986; Watts et al., 1989; Cantrell et al., 1991; Haney, 1992; US Bureau of Mines, 1992; Watts, 1992; Watts et al., 1995). If the proposed DPM TLV were to be adopted as a permissible exposure limit (PEL) for US underground mines, the proposed limit of 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would be lower than any of the concentrations measured in the earlier studies and would represent more than a 15-fold reduction from the maximum 2.36 mg/m3 concentration. A 0.15 mg/m3 PEL would also represent a 4.5-fold reduction from the average 0.68 mg/m3 measured mine ambient air DPM concentration reported in this paper. Other diesel tailpipe emissions that are now regulated underground include carbon monoxide (CO), with a PEL of 50 ppm; nitrogen dioxide (NO,), with a PEL of 5 ppm; nitric oxide (NO), with a PEL of 25 ppm; and sulfur dioxide (SO,) with a PEL of 5 ppm. Because the concentrations of these gaseous pollutants and DPM are affected by the state-of-maintenance (Waytulonis,1992), it is important that a means be developed to measure emissions from engines that are now in service to determine when maintenance is needed. The current study was the result of an inquiry by mine¬maintenance personnel who had been receiving complaints about high concentrations of diesel soot (DPM) in mine headings from load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicle operators. Mine-maintenance personnel were searching for an objective test to determine if the diesel tailpipe particulate emitted was excessive. The mine was also evaluating electronically controlled, two-cycle, naturally aspirated, direct-injection diesel engines on some of their JCI (John-Clark Inc.) load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles. These LHD vehicles were used to haul freshly blasted ore from mine headings to a feeder breaker. The feeder breaker breaks down the larger chunks and feeds the broken ore onto a conveyor. Michigan Technological University, in past studies, developed an emissions-measurement apparatus (EMA) ca¬pable of measuring diesel vehicle tailpipe pollutant concentrations (Chan et al., 1992; Chan et al., 1993; Carlson et al., 1994). At the time of the study reported here, most of the mine&apos;s LHD vehicles used a 12-cylinder, four-cycle, naturally aspirated prechamber diesel engine. The study was undertaken in cooperation with mine maintenance supervisors from late 1992 through July 1993. The objectives were to compare diesel exhaust emissions between the 6-cylinder, two-cycle, electronically controlled, direct-injected diesel engine and the 12-cylinder, four-cycle, prechamber diesel engine and to, then, use the data collected, in conjunction with mine ambient air measurements, to demonstrate the application of the "deterioration factor" (Chan et al., 1992), which is a measure of the state-of-maintenance of mine-vehicle engines that are now in service. The information would be used to identify vehicles that need maintenance to reduce emissions. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Since the beginning of operations, with the exception of a small tonnage mined by slushing, ore extraction has been by full gravity caving. Formerly, a checkerboard sequence of block undercutting was followed with the even-numbered blocks in one panel and the odd¬numbered blocks in the adjacent panel being mined. As these blocks were depleted, the intermediate or pillar blocks were mined (Fig. 1). Following this checker¬board, the mining sequence went through a number of changes, finally evolving into diagonal retreat panel cav¬ing by blocks (Fig. 2). The numbers in Fig. 2 indicate the sequence in which blocks were undercut. Gaps in the numbering sequence indicate undercutting on the level outside the illustrated area. Geology The ore body is a low-grade deposit of chalcopyrite mineralization disseminated throughout structurally weak, highly fractured, strongly altered granitic host rocks. It takes the shape of a gently dipping elliptical cylinder consisting of an ore shell of variable thickness surrounding an interior waste core. Major and minor axes of the mineralized cylinder are 1524 m (5000 ft) and 762 m (2500 ft), respectively, and length approximates 2438 m (8000 ft). Ore is sufficiently fractured to break readily into medium-coarse size. The igneous rock complex containing the ore body is covered by a wedge-shaped blanket of Tertiary con¬glomerate which was brought into place by faulting along the major regional structure of the San Manuel fault. Thickness of the conglomerate cap varies from only 9 m (30 ft) at the east end of the ore body to more than 610 m (2000 ft) at the west. Structurally, the con¬glomerate is much more competent than the igneous host rocks and, when caving, it breaks into massive chunks. Conglomerate boulders seen in drawpoints underground are very coarse. The total rock column over the initial mining area of the 1415 grizzly level was 354 m (1160 ft) of which 122 m (400 ft) was ore, 79 m (260 ft) was leached igneous capping, and 152 m (500 ft) was conglomerate above the San Manuel fault. Diamond Drilling: From 4572 to 7620 m (15,000 to 25,000 ft) are drilled annually from underground workings to delineate the ore body. MINE DEVELOPMENT Haulage Level In the south or main ore body (see Figs. 3-6), with the exception of the draw and transfer raises, all the extraction openings are concreted (Seaney and Tobie, 1965). The haulage panel drifts, which are 18 m (60 ft) below the grizzly drifts, are first driven with pre¬concrete ground support. The drift, which has an arched section, then is concreted using mobile collapsible steel tunnel forms. The haulage drifts leading from the pan¬els to the hoisting shafts are not concreted. After the panel drifts have been concreted, the raise stations from which transfer raises will be driven are constructed and the raise-station ore-drawing chute is installed. The chute is prefabricated of A-36 steel with undercut guillo¬tine gates made of abrasion-resistant 2.5-cm (1-in.) steel plate powered by 20-cm (8-in.) air cylinder installed on each side of the raise station. Transfer Raises The transfer raises are lined with 15 x 20-cm (6 x 8-in.) cribbing and are 1.22 m (4 ft) in the clear. Each cribbing is protected from wear by a high carbon steel angle which is nailed onto the cribbing. The transfer raises are driven from each side of the raise station on an angle of 1.1 rad (63°). Each raise con¬sists of a main and a backover branch. The transfer¬raise driving crew consists of two men working one shift only. Grizzly Drifts After the transfer raise reaches the grizzly level, the grizzly drift can be driven. The grizzly drifts are spaced at 10.6-m (35-ft) centers and are driven parallel to the long axis of the ore body (see Fig. 2). This drift is driven by a two-man crew working on one or more drifts at a time using feed-leg machines. The eight grizzlies in the 42.7-m (140-ft) long drift are spaced at 5.3-m

Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America&apos;s premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada&apos;s Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km&apos; (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont&apos;s exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont&apos;s Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont&apos;s Post and Barrick&apos;s Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

INTRODUCTION The United States Uranium Registry (USUR) tissue program was funded in 1978 by the United States Department of Energy (DOE) through its Human Health and Assessments Division, and registrant enrollment began in 1980. It is operated by Hanford Environmental Health Foundation (HERF), Richland, Washington, with support provided by Pacific Northwest Laboratory (PNL).** The USUR tissue program is the first systematic effort to contact and gain assistance of workers occupationally exposed to uranium and to seek and study uranium deposition in human tissue. This paper describes the program objectives, populations selected for study, procedures for enrolling workers in the program, types of tissue to be studied, and analytical procedures to be used. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES The objectives of the USUR tissue program are to: 1) Determine the distribution and concentration of uranium, if any, in the tissues of occupationally exposed workers. 2) Compare bioassay measurements of exposed individuals with the results of analyses of tissues obtained at autopsy. 3) Seek evidence of histopathologic changes related to any uranium deposition that may be present. 4) Conduct analyses of whole bodies, when available, to obtain more precise data on the uranium burdens, if any, in the body and organs, and especially the distribution in parts of the body, such as the skeleton, that are not usually accessible for sampling. 5) Develop data that will assist in evaluating a) the accuracy of current in-vivo measurement techniques, b) the propriety of existing regulations, and c) the adequacy of current protection programs. SELECTION OF POPULATIONS FOR STUDY Selection of the populations for the USUR tissue program was based on studies of the United States Uranium Registry described elsewhere (0c81). Potential populations for study were quite varied because of occupational exposure to different chemical forms of uranium, different levels and eras of exposure, varying ability to identify populations exposed in the past, and the general interest and cooperativeness of the populations. Nevertheless, certain identifiable populations emerged that were both willing to participate in the study and likely to provide useful information. Among the targeted populations are individuals who were exposed to uranium prior to the existence of modern exposure standards. These individuals are presently being enrolled by the USUR. The reliability of concentration and distribution data and the demonstration of effects are more likely in such individuals than in those who have received less exposure. However, the targeted groups also include individuals who Have been exposed to permissible levels of uranium, and reference employees in uranium plants who have not worked with uranium. The lesser exposures are of immediate interest because of the rarity of heavy exposures under current standards. The sampling of potentially exposed individuals with negative in-vivo measurement results may serve to check the adequacy of in-vivo measurements in the detection of deposition. [ENROLLMENT PROCEDURE] The enrollment of participants follows three patterns. 1) Presently employed workers are enrolled by the cooperative efforts of USUR staff with the medical, industrial relations, and/or health physics personnel of the uranium facility. Volunteers may be enrolled by medical personnel at the time of their physical examination or by health physics personnel at the time of a bioassay or lung counting procedure. Based on the mechanical essence that large-scale plastic failure zone appears in all or part of surrounding rock in soft rock roadway, the numerical simulation method is used to study the rectangular roadway in layered rock strata. It is clarified necessary conditions must be met for soft rock: firstly, the strength condition is that the maximum confining pressure is greater than the uniaxial compressive strength of rock strata. Secondly, the stress environment condition is that the ratio of maximum confining pressure to minimum confining pressure is greater than 3. Thirdly, the angle condition is that The direction of principal stress action enables the plastic zone of weak rock layers to fully develop. At the same time, the quantitative description method of soft rock is given, and the soft rock roadway is redefined. Soft rock roadway refers to the roadway that meets the strength conditions, stress environment conditions, and rock structure angle conditions under certain surrounding rock conditions and in-situ stress environment conditions. It provides a theoretical basis and engineering analysis method for the identification of soft rock roadway, and the research results have engineering value Soft rock tunnel engineering in coal mines constitutes a vital aspect of soft rock engineering. This field broadly encompasses rock engi- neering concerning large plastic deformations, e.g., soft rock slope engineering and soft rock tunnel engineering. The intricate geological conditions encountered in soft rock tunnel engineering present a significant challenge to support, which has harmed coal production in China. China leads global raw coal production with the annual output of 4.6 billion tons. Annual tunnel excavation supporting this production spans approximately 11,000 km, with over 10% of these tunnels classified as soft rock formations. Soft rock is commonly associated with soft rock tunnels due to their prevalence in engineering projects. However, reaching a consensus on the definition of soft rock has long been an enduring challenge for scholars and engineers. Numerous definitions have been proposed, includ- ing descriptive, index, and engineering definitions. For instance, the International Society for Rock Mechanics defines soft rock based on its uniaxial compressive strength σ ranging from 0.5 to 25 MPa. China's Engineering Rock Body Standards, established in 1994 (GB 50218-94), take a qualitative and quantitative approach to classifying rocks. Rocks are categorized as hard or soft based on criteria such as hammering sound, fragmentation, water immersion effects, and weath- ering degree. Additionally, the integrity of rock bodies is assessed across five categories intact, relatively intact, soft fractured, fractured, and extremely fractured. This classification considers factors like the number and spacing of structural planes, their combination, and the types of structures. Descriptive and index-based definitions fall under the category of geological soft rocks, providing a comprehensive geological perspective on the surface features or strength characteristics. However, these definitions have limitations in engineering practice, which leads to contradic- tions. For instance, rocks with uniaxial compressive strength less than 25 MPa may not exhibit soft rock characteristics if the tunnel is shal- low with low horizontal stress levels. Conversely, rocks with compressive strength exceeding 25 MPa at sufficient depth and high horizontal stress may exhibit soft rock characteristics. Definitions originating from engineering practice have emerged after realizing the inadequacy of discussing soft rocks without considering engineering. For instance, Dong's loose circle theory defines soft rocks as rocks with a loose circle thickness exceeding 1.5 m, which chal- lenges conventional supports. This intuitive definition, widely accepted by engineering professionals, emphasizes the difficulty in supporting tunnels due to extensive damage. However, various tunnel damage poses a challenge in relying solely on the loose circle thickness of tunnels for determining soft rocks. He introduced the concept of engineering soft rocks, which are defined as rock formations exhibiting significant plastic deformations under applied engineering force. The idea of automatic or remote control of the mine ventilation process generally, and methane concentration particularly, attracts the attention of mining engineers more and more. The advantages of introducing mine ventilation control systems are breaking traditional reluctance. The change of attitude is not only because of the requirements of modern exploitation technology, but it is also due to the recent progress in development and successful introduction of reliable monitoring systems and actuators in the form of controlled ventilators and doors [1]; [2], [3], [4], [5], [6]. Many &apos;years of theoretical and experimental studies of the dynamics of mine ventilation processes created the needed base for a proper design of an automatic control system [7],[8],[9], [10]. From these studies must, however, be drawn a fundamental conclusion, which may be regarded as the motto of this paper: An automatic control system for mine ventilation ill-conditioned or improperly designed is capable of creating hazard situations in response to random disturbances, much more, severe in consequence than a traditional ventilation system without any automatic or remote control! This statement is easy to prove if the dynamic properties of the ventilation process are taken into consideration. The ventilation process, as a matter of fact, is described by non-linear equations, and it must be expected that the process has more than one state of equilibrium. In other words, in the ventilation process may exist not only one but also more than one steady-states of flow, of which some are stable and others unstable. In certain circumstances, there may be no steady-state at all, and the process will oscillate [8], [11] , [12] . The state of flow in a network tends towards a steady-state and the actual steady-state established will depend on the initial conditions or disturbances in flow (fire,. etc.), which steady-state from the total number that will be . We frequently observe jumps from one steady-state to another. Disturbances in flow conditions which may cause such transitions are events of random character, occurring very rarely. Concluding, it must be stressed that there has to be a control system adjusted to the ventilation process in order to avoid situations mentioned above. There is only one alternative available and suitable for examination or study of the dynamics of a given mine ventilation problem: either by continuous monitoring of the real process, or numerical simulation of the process using a mathematical model. The advantages of the second method are obvious. This method allows consideration of every possible case very quickly and cheaply in relation to the first method. The aim of the paper is to show again that the simulation of the mine ventilation process and particularly a methane concentration process, separately or combined together with a control system, are real possibilities. A simulation method requires precise specification of the problem under consideration. For example, if we intend to examine a methane-concentration control system, the following items have to be specified: - expected target function of the control system. - structure of the control system. - mathematical model of control system, including sensor system, data preparation system, controllers, decision routine, regulators, etc. - structure of mine ventilation network. - mathematical model of ventilation process, including air flow and methane concentration processes. - pattern of disturbances which may occur in the controlled process as well as initial conditions on a &apos;start-up&apos; of the system. Using typical computer programs for numerical solution of equations in the mathematical model of the problem involved, we are able, within the adequacy of the model, to simulate every case specified by the disturbances and initial conditions. As a result of simulation, it is expected that the following parameters could be defined: - transient flow in the network. - transient state of methane concentration in working areas. - stability of flow and methane concent¬ration. - stability of the control system. - range of control. - efficiency of control, etc. It is obvious that simulation methods readily allow for modifications to existing systems such that desired results will be obtained. The reliable quality assessment of grouting operations is one of the key issues in establishing impermeable grout curtains around shafts, drifts and tunnels. Reliable opera¬tional information on the decrease in the permeability of rock during the grouting process facilitates the assessment of the effectiveness of the completed curtain and assures production quality. Quality control and assurance also fa¬cilitates the early detection and elimination of possible de¬fects in the grout curtain. Thorough control of the grouting process provides the capability to evaluate decreases in the permeability of water-producing fracture zones prior to the beginning or the continuation of excavation of the shaft, tunnel or drift. In order to achieve this objective, post¬grouting hydrodynamic investigations are conducted prior to the initiation or re-initiation of work on the underground workings to measure the decrease in the permeability coef¬ficient of aquifers during grouting operations. 8.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL OF THE ISOLATION OF ROCK BY GROUTING THROUGH HOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Quality assurance and control are based on measuring the decrease in the permeability coefficient of water-pro¬ducing horizons as a result of injecting grout into the drill¬holes. For this purpose, the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient is calculated beforehand based on the acceptable value of ground water inflow into the shaft, drift or tunnel as specified by the "construction norm and integrated practice (SNIP)" (Anon., 1976). Having ob¬tained the values of aquifer thickness, permeability, and head distribution for each aquifer from flowmetric data (dis¬cussed in Chapter 3), the average value of the permeability coefficient of all aquifers intersected by the shaft is calcu¬lated as [ ] where Ki is the permeability coefficient of the "ith" aqui¬fer; Pi is the pressure of the "ith" aquifer; and M; is the thickness of the "ith" aquifer. The total expected inflow of ground water into the shaft is [ ] where RK is the radius of the contour of influence; RCFB is the radius of the shaft; and p is the coefficient of dynamic viscosity of the ground water. The necessary reduction of the coefficient of permeabil¬ity of the aquifer [ ] where Q is the expected inflow of ground water into the shaft from eq. 8.2; Q.-fin is the acceptable inflow of ground water; and a is the safety factor. By knowing the average permeability value of the rock and the permeability reduction coefficient, it is possible to determine the value of the acceptable residual permeability coefficient for all the aquifers [ ] The values of the permeability coefficient, pressure, and thickness for each aquifer are determined from the data gathered during the hydrodynamic investigations conducted in grout holes prior to beginning the grouting operations as discussed in Chapter 3. After injecting the grout into the first of the holes, the injection into each of the following grout holes is preceded by repeated hydrodynamic investi¬gations. Using the data obtained for each water-producing zone, a graph is constructed where the numbers representing the grout holes in their order of grouting are placed on the abscissa, and the values of the aquifer permeability coeffi¬cient are placed on the ordinate (Fig. 103). This curve char¬acterizes the change in permeability of the given hydro¬stratigraphic unit as grouting operations are completed, one hole at a time. The results of grouting operations are considered to be positive when each sequential observation records a steady decrease in the permeability of the aquifer. The permeabil¬ity measured prior to the injection of the grout into the last hole must be lower than or equal to the acceptable perme¬ability as determined by the application of eqs. 8.1 through 8.4. Table 8.1 presents illustrative data on the hydrogeo¬logic properties of aquifers at a mine shaft prior to the initiation of grouting operations. Data also are presented on the reduction in the permeability coefficient during the in¬jection of the grout. The shaft in question intersects eleven aquifers. Based on data concerning aquifer pressure, thick¬ness, permeability, and the expected inflow rate of water for each of the strata, the average permeability coefficient is calculated according to eq. 8.1 as K = 0.2 x 10-12 m2. "For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures.
