1. The investigation shows that the Sewanee coal bed is the most important bed in Grundy County arid is the only bed that has had any sustained production. There is no production, at the present time, from any of the other coal beds in the county. The Richland (Lower Sewanee or Coke Oven) coal bed has been prospected but has never been developed extensively. The Angel coal bed has been worked to a very small extent near Beersheba Springs, Tenn., for local consumption. The Battle Creek coal bed has been worked sporadically near Monteagle, Tenn. 2. Known measured and indicated reserves in the Sewaneee coal bed, based on a minimum thickness of 14 inches and on 1,800 short tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated to be 15 millon short tons as of January 1, 1953. Of this total, 10 million tons represents coal 28 inches and more thick. Areas in the bed were omitted from the estimate where available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager for making an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these areas, such reserves should be added to the total estimated reserves.

Premature blasts of charges of explosives have caused many deaths in anthracite mines, and the causes of many of the blasts were not determined satisfactorily. Investigators often found fairly high potential differences between such metallic objects as rails, pipes, conveyor lines, or sheet-iron chutes in the working place where an accident had occurred. At one mine where a premature blast occurred in a rock tunnel, one workman was killed and two others were injured, and several days later a potential difference large enough to explode an electric squib was detected between the compressed-air pipe and the track rail; the voltage fluctuated and appeared to change with the movement of a locomotive. At another mine, a. workman was killed when a primed cartridge that he was about to load in a blast hole exploded in his hand. During the investigation, a potential difference was found between the conveyor line and the sheet-iron chute. During a 5-year Period, 61 fatalities and 771 nonfatal injuries were caused by explosives accidents in anthracite mines, and one of the chief causes of these accidents was premature blasts.

Steel liner plates, which are bolted together to form a shell, are commonly used to provide temporary protective linings in the tunneling industry to ensure the stability of the tunnel and safety of the workers until more permanent ground reinforcement can be installed. As the ground deforms to try and close the opening, the liner plate is radially stressed, and by deforming redistributes these loads back to the surrounding insitu earth. Grouting behind the plates is done to fill any voids and ensure uniform contact to the strata around the back of the plates. Another function of the liner plate in some applications is to act as a platform or structure for the mining machine to react against in order to develop the necessary forward thrust to be able to excavate the face. In this case, the liner plates are loaded axially as a horizontal column of bolted liner plate rings, creating a jacking force against the liner plate assembly. In general, the buckling strength of the plate sections determines the jacking force capacity. Historically, the jacking force capacity of tunnel liner plates has been theoretically determined by some simplistic equations developed from tests of single liner plates. Recently, full-scale tests on a complete circular section of bolted liner plate ring segments have been conducted in the NIOSH Safety Structures Testing Laboratory using the unique Mine Roof Simulator to apply controlled loading in a manner that simulates the real world environment. Due to the unique size and capacity of the Mine Roof Simulator, these are believed to be the first full-scale tests conducted on the jacking force capability of tunnel liner plate rings. These tests indicate that the previously used theoretical equations tend to over predict the jacking force capacity of these tunnel liner plates. Unanticipated deformations in the field have been observed at loads below these theoretical design loads, therefore, a more accurate determination of the jacking force capability was needed. This report summarizes the full-scale test results, examines design parameters that impact the jacking force capability, and develops new mathematical models to improve the prediction of design loads.

2. Preliminary Study - Initial Probing 2. 1 Introduction Initial probing of the mine passage is required prior to the emplacement of the sealant material or deployment of the seal checker system. Factors which are of interest in sealing and checking include a. size and condition of the mine passage b. location of the borehole with respect to the ribs c. the presence of water flows d. the proximity to an intersection The importance of each of these factors depends strongly on the sealant material. Because the sealant material had not been selected at the time of the initial probing study, a broad survey of probing techniques was conducted. The capabilities and limitations of each technique as they applied to probing through the borehole were identified. To facilitate this comparitive evaluation, Table I was prepared which lists all passage conditions which might affect the emplacement of sealant material in the passage. The most satisfactory techniques for observing each condition of interest are listed together with the effects of the observation on the sealing operation. High-grade synthetic rutile has been produced in the laboratory from domestic ilmenite concentrates by a new carbonyl process. The ilmenite was first reduced to convert the iron oxides to metal and then treated at temper-atures over 1000 C in high-pressure carbon monoxide (CO) to convert the iron to the pentacarbonyl. Rapid carbonylation was achieved in the presence of small quantities of selected promoters. Maximum iron removal occurred at temperatures between 110° and 130° C at CO pressures from 1,000 to 1,400 psig. Iron pentacarbonyl appeared as liquid and vapor in the reactor and could be removed by gravity flow and vapor transport. More than 90 pct of the iron was extracted in 2-hr experiments at pressures of 1,000 psig and above. The Ti02 product is porous owing to the removal of the iron, has the rutile crystal structure, and is suitable for chlorination. Waste disposal problems associated with the process would be minimal because the iron pentacarbonyl can be decomposed to produce iron powder or pellets for sale and CO for recycling.

In 1935 , Brown and Yant / described a microprojector ( microscopic arrangement for projecting images on a screen ) for use in counting and measuring the size of dust particles in Owens - jet dust - counter and simila dry samples of dust collected from the air . In 1938 Brown and others , described a modification of this microprojector that could be used also in counting dust in impinger samples . Microprojectors of this second type have been set up by many mining companies and others and have been made commercially available . Hamly and Pullen5/ described a modification of this microprojector for use in making rapid comparative estimates on konimeter samples and other determinations . This report contains information on still another modification named the "midget microprojector " because of its small size .

Bulk carriers, freighters, and tankers are the three classes of marine vessels engaged in transporting mineral commodities. However, vessels in each of these categories are not devoted wholly to mineral commodity transport. Bulk carriers move agricultural products as well as crude minerals and mineral fertilizers, as ore/bulk/oil carriers also do. Freighters, owing to their great variety, can be devoted wholly to hauling mineral products or wholly to moving nonmineral goods, as well as carrying mixed mineral and nonmineral cargoes. They include general cargo carriers, full containerships, partial containerships, roll-on/roll-off ships, and barge carriers. Tankers, although largely engaged in moving crude oil and refinery products, also transport liquid chemicals, molasses, wine, liquefied natural gas, and other fluids. Although physical characteristics of vessels, such as sue, draft, crew requirements, and type of propulsion system, as well as fuel costs, have an undeniable influence on shipping industry performance, problems of and changes in the quantity and quality and types of material moved also significantly affect the shipping sector of the world economy. Unfortunately, comprehensive data in this regard are not available.

Synopsis Underground stone mining Is an emerging sector of the U.S. mining industry. As this expansion takes mines under deeper cover, and as more efficient mining methods are utilized, effective stone pillar design methods will become even more Important. Current design practices are examined and a discussion of safe mine layouts is presented as a first approach towards weighing the demands for increased production against increased risk. Risks to underground stone-mine workers include rib Instabilities, pillar failures and roof falls. Seventy-two stone-mine pillar designs were examined. Pillars with width to height ratios of less than 1.5 appear more likely to fail when subjected to excessive stress levels. When width to height ratios fall below 1.0 defects in the pillars, such as through-running discon¬tinuities, can have a significant influence on stability. Discontinuity persistence, dip, material properties and orientation are also important determining factors in pillar strength. During the past three years the number of active underground stone mines in the U.S.A. has ranged between 90 and 100. This number is expected to increase as the crushed stone industry responds to growing demands for its products.1 As more of the industry moves to benefit from the advantages of underground mining production from underground stone mines is expected to increase above its current level of approximately 66 000 000 r/year. Parker2 identified four advantages of underground mining operations: (1) surface developments, zoning laws and environmental concerns are often less of an issue; (2) stripping and restoration requirements are eliminated; (3) additional reserves are often available beneath the quarry floor, under pit slopes or under an adjoining property; and (4) space is created for secondary use. Underground mines enjoy the added benefits of work in a constant underground climate, rather than in the variable surface climate, minimization of community concerns by placement of the crushing, sizing and stowing operations underground and reduction of surface vibration concerns through smaller blasts. The drawbacks of underground mining include added health and safety hazards for the stone miners, whose health can suffer from increased exposure to falls of ground, airborne contaminants and fog in large underground openings. Injuries from falls of ground in stone mines have occasionally exceeded the incidence rates for other mineral resources mined underground. 3 Existing underground stone operations, by comparison with stone operations a decade ago, mine more stone at a faster rate and with larger equipment. Because of high demand mines face increased pressure to yield more stone per production blast. A majority of the miners use the V-cut blasting pattern, which limits the depth or pull for each shot to about 4 m. Therefore, to produce more stone, either the mines must work more faces or existing faces must be enlarged. The enlargement of underground openings poses problems in the maintenance o€ strata stability, First, the widths of the mine entries partially control the amount of sag or deflection that any given roof beam can withstand before failure. This deflection can take pi ace quickly after an opening is excavated or much later as weathering processes form additional, thinner beams. Because increased deflection increases the potential for roof beam failure, there is a limit to how wide a room can safely be made. These limits depend on local geological and stress conditions and, to some extent, the cost effectiveness of roof-bolting. Given these room width limitations, underground stone mines have placed more attention on expansion of production through benching where mining thicknesses permit. The heights of rooms partially control the strength characteristics of adjacent pillars: as the room height increases for a given pillar width the pillar width-to-height ratio (w/h) decreases. In general, stone pillars are very strong, but when the width-to height ratio diminishes the potential for pillar rib instabilities and pillar failures increases (see Fig. 1). [ ] In the underground environment the desire to utilize wider rooms, higher benches and multi-level mining results in the potential for unstable ground conditions. Although the number of failed pillars is currently very low, the potential for additional failures will grow if more slender pillars are developed, especially under deeper cover, with wider mining sections and in multi-level operations. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and built an inexpensive, weatherproof, temperature-controlled cabinet to provide temporary housing for analytical instrumentation. The cabinet consists of an inverted Styrofoam ice chest, an electric fan for air circulation, and a proportional temperature controller equipped with a thermistor sensor and a light bulb as the heater. The cabinet provides a constant-temperature environment for a moisture analyzer and a strip chart recorder when outside temperatures range from -SO to 21° c.

The Bureau of Mines is making a survey of petroleum products manufactured on the Pacific Coast from California crude oils . California crude petroleum is known to differ in some characteristics from the crude oil produced in other parts of the United States , and the claim has been made that the present Federal specifications are unduly severe when applied to the products made from California crudes . The main purpose of the present survey is to determine whether these claims are justified . This report deals only with California gasolines . Other products , such as burning oil , fuel and lubricating oils , will be taken up later . The samples reported were furnished in most cases , by the four large refining companies located on the Pacific Coast , although a number of samples of motor gasoline were purchased in the open market . In Los Angeles , samples of motor gasoline were obtained from service stations representing as many different refineries as possible . Inasmuch as San Francisco is one of the cities covered by the regular semi -annual motor gasoline survey conducted by the Bureau of Mines , it was not considered essential that the set of samples obtained from this city be as comprehensive as would otherwise have been necessary . The gasoline consumed in the States of Washington and Oregon is furnished for the most part by California refineries , and no effort was made to procure samples from these States .

Underground coal mining operations in the United States continue to increase productivity as mining equipment and practices are improved. Unfortunately, increased production also results in the potential for increased respirable dust generation and worker exposure. In response, US operations are applying basic controls at elevated levels and looking to emerging technologies in an effort to better control respirable dust levels. Ventilating air and water sprays remain the basis of dust control strategies for both longwall and continuous mining operations, and the level of application for these controls continues to increase. In addition, new technologies are emerging that have the potential to further reduce dust levels. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research into methods to optimize existing control technologies and evaluate emerging control technologies. This paper will summarize control technologies routinely being used in underground coal mine operations, as well as provide a review of new controls that are being pursued.

As an integral part of the investigation of critical and essential minerals in Alaska , the Bureau of Mines examined the lead deposits in the Slana area . Four examinations were made during June , July, and August 1945 in the 200 - square -mile area immediately northwest of Slana . The settlement of Slana lies near the conflux of the small Slana River with the mighty Copper River less than 60 miles southwest of Tek Junction on the Alaska Highway . Travel through the area and the examination of the properties were conducted by a three-man crew consisting of the author , a caterpillar operator , and a laborer . An RD6 caterpillar , equipped with blade and winch , was used in breaking trail and freighting through the country . Supplies and equipment were loaded on a 7- by 14 -foot , double - end , go -devil , which was hauled by the tractor .

Many significant events that began in 1990-91 continued to have a profound impact in the world minerals economy in 1992. The dissolution of the U.S.S.R. and the formal breakup of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) had significant effects far beyond the geographic boundaries of Europe and Central Eurasia. CMEA's network of economic interdependence had relied on central planning, a variety of subsidies, and barter agreements that allowed its members to function without the pressures of productivity and efficiency. In the mineral sector, many decisions had been made based on the need for military planning and technology competition with the market economy world. Because of inexpensive oil available through subsidies and technology assistance from the former U.S.S.R., industries III CMEA member countries had been able to function and maintain production to supply minerals and materials required to support the policies of the central plan. In 1992, most of the former CMEA countries decreased their output of many minerals. In some cases, the network of production that had been in place was severed. Political and economic instability, destruction of infrastructure, and new priorities were affecting other mineral industries in the area. In late 1991, 15 independent countries replaced the U.S.S.R. and in early 1991 the former CMEA countries found themselves trying to adjust to the realities of economic independence and the need to compete with former allies for survival. Although 11 of the 15 former Soviet republics joined in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in December 1991, in 1992, individual economic needs exceeded the needs of the Commonwealth III importance. As a result, new mineral trade patterns emerged as minerals were used as a source of much needed capital.

The heats of formation at 298.15° K of calcium tungstate, calcium molybdate, and magnesium molybdate were determined by solution calorimetry. For the heats of formation from the elements, the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -402.4 ± 0.5 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -369.5 ± 0.3 kcal/mole, -334.8 ± 0.2 kcal/mole. For the heats of formation from the oxides J the values obtained were calcium tungstate, -49.2 ± 0.4 kcal/mole, calcium molybdate, -39.6 ± 0.1 kcal/mole, and magnesium molybdate, -12.9 [ ] 0.1 kcal/mole.

The Bureau of Mines studied the penetration of a slender cylindrical tube into a sand bed, simulating seafloor material under the application of a static load. The factorial experimental design was based on three factors: tube diameter, geometry of penetrating bit, and seawater saturation of sand, all of which were found to be significant in influencing the depth of penetration. The geometry of the penetrating bit, or shoe, is of major significance in the mechanics of penetration and should be considered the most important factor for additional study. Linear regression analyses of the load-penetration data show that the relationship is linear.

Research by the Bureau of Mines includes efforts to devise means for maximum recovery of critical and strategic metals from primary and secondary domestic resources. As part of that effort, the Bureau developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Co, Ni, and Cu from Missouri lead-smelter matte. The process includes leaching with H2S04 plus Mn02 as an oxidizing agent, liquor purification, selective precipitation of CuS, (Co,Ni)S, and MnC03, and crystallization of Na2S04&apos; This report is concerned primarily with liquor purification, in which As and Fe are removed from the leach liquor by pH adjustment and filtration. Two variations of the purification step are described. One variation provides liquor containing <1 mg/L As and Fe but requires two solid-liquid separations, The other is achieved with only one solid-liquid separation but leads to a lower degree of purification.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducratory and field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of dust collector bags for reducing dust liberation and operator exposure from a roof bolter’s dust collection system. The laboratory tests evaluated the bag’s effectiveness to contain dust and the effect on canister filter loading in both a bag and bagless condition. The dust emissions from the collector’s exhaust were also measured in each condition during laboratory testing and show that nearly 100% of the test dust fed into the collector was captured by the dust bags. Loading and pressure drop on the dust collector’s canister filter is greatly decreased when using the bags, enabling longer periods of drilling without filter removal/cleaning. The field results showed that, even though dust standards were met, respirable dust in exhausted emissions was reduced around the bolter. Laboratory and field results show that benefits from use of the bags are realized in all areas of operator exposure.

The Bureau of Mines recently tested a sideboard device that is designed to act as an extension of conventional brattice, thus improving face ventilation of developing room-and-pillar-type coal mining. In these laboratory tests, an 8-foot-long rigid sideboard was mounted vertically along the left fender of a full-scale-model ripper-type continuous mining machine, rising to the mine roof to provide an air seal. It extended from the auger support frame pivot point outby along the fender. A novel water spray manifold was used to form an air seal between the sideboard and brattice. Tests showed improvement in face ventilation with the prototype device, and also demonstrated that water sprays can form an effective air seal over a fairly wide pressure range. Based on this preliminary study, subsequent improvements may make the sideboard concept much more effective, thus affording a simple, inexpensive technique to improve the effectiveness of face ventilation.

The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines&apos; requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. Nevertheless, these measurements are important since the same perturbations would also affect a receiving loop oriented to receive the vertical magnetic field. Dr. Rankin pointed

Subsidence was monitored by the U.S. Bureau of Mines over the ends of longwall panels operating in the Pittsburgh, Kittanning, and No. 2 Gas Coalbeds of the northern Appalachian Coal Basin. The final subsidence over the finishing ends of three panels in the Pittsburgh Coalbed are compared with the subsidence measured over the rib at these panels. The characteristics of subsidence are different. At Mine A, data over the start of a longwall panel shows similar characteristics to the subsidence measured over the rib. Subsidence over the fmishing ends of panels in the Kittanning and No.2 Gas Coalbeds are also different from the subsidence over the rib. The use of a subsidence prediction model based on data gathered over the rib of a panel will not yield accurate results if it is applied to the finishing end of a longwall panel. Acceptable results may be obtained along the centerline over the starting end of a panel.
