For many years there have been small scale tests available for evaluating the toxic fumes production by capsensitive explosives (DOT Class 1. l), but these could not be used with blasting agents due to the large charge sizes and heavy confinement required for proper detonation. Considering the extensive use of blasting agents in construction and mining, there is a need to determine the quantities of toxic ti,tmes generated by blasting agents. At the International Society of Explosive Engineers Twenty Third Annual Conference on Explosives and Blasting Technique in 1997, the authors reported on a facility for detonating large (4.54 kg), confined blasting agent charges in a controlled volume that had been constructed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Pittsburgh Research Lab’s Experimental Mine. Since 1997, this facility has been used to collect data on toxic fumes produced by the detonation of various ammonium nitrate/fuel oil (ANFO) mixtures and several cap-sensitive explosives. ANFO composition ranging from 1 to 10 percent (pet) tieI oil have been studied. As expected from previous studies, with an increase in fuel oil content the carbon monoxide production increases, while nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production decrease. The detonation velocity varies from 3,000 to 4,000 m/set for the 1 to 10 pet range of fuel oil content, suggesting that ANFO mixes with improper fuel oil content may appear to detonate properly, while their fume production differs significantly from optimum. The study also considers such factors as degree of confinement, water contamination, and aluminum content on blasting agent fume production. Results indicate that water contamination of the ANFO has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but causes significant increase in nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Decreasing confinement from Schedule 80 steel pipe to 0.4~mm thick sheet metal also has little effect on carbon monoxide production, but significantly increases nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide production. Adding 5 and 10 pet aluminum to the ANFO had no clear effect on carbon monoxide, nitric oxide, or nitrogen dioxide production.

This study evaluates the effects of both short inter-hole and intra-hole delay times on rock fragmentation and throw. Full-scale test blasts were analyzed at a granite quarry in Talbotton, GA. This analysis provides a representative understanding of timing effects on fragmentation in the field, different from previous lab scale studies that negate the effect of geology. Inter-hole delay times between 0 ms and 25 ms were tested on a series of 4 bench blasts and subsequently examined using photographic fragmentation analysis methods.

Testing Stations Abroad At the Seventh International Congress of Applied Chemistry, Drs. Mente and Will communicated a paper on the above subject. All large coal-getting countries employ testing stations of some kind, in order to safeguard, to the highest possible extent, the lives of the men employed in this industry. Most countries employ galleries of considerable diameter, and fairly short length; but within recent times, long galleries, with drives and other accessories approaching as closely as possible the actual conditions of mining have been installed. Initial planning called for 3 separate drop shafts and 3 separate vent shafts to be pulled back from the excavated tunnel with a large diameter raise bore machine. With time constraints and the raise bore machine already in high demand on other shafts, a more “traditional” drill and blast approach was taken on a few of the larger drop shafts. This decision proved to be not only cost effective, but also reduced schedule impact as the shafts were excavated simultaneously with the other raise bores.

Underground mining is the most feasible method after extinction of shallow depth ore deposits. Longhole stoping method is the most technically advanced method for the faster excavation. In this method, the holes are drilled in the form of ring pattern and explosives are used for the rock breakage. During blasting, the explosive energy sometimes also breaks the non-ore material. The non-ore material gets included in the extracted ore and enhances the ore dilution. Few uncontrollable factors which affects the ore dilution are ore body characteristics, rock quality, insitu stress condition etc. Apart from uncontrollable factors, explosive energy and blast design also plays an immense role in ore dilution. In the blasting practice, the purpose is to effectively utilise the explosive energy for rock breakage. The optimum delay is required so that the blast holes attain adequate free face before the blasting. This paper deals with the optimisation of blast design parameters to reduce ore dilution in underground hard rock mining having narrow vein. The study was carried out using numerical simulation. The explicit dynamics based modeller of Ansys was used for this purpose. The parametric variations in the models were done to optimise the parameters. The burden has been optimised first by varying the width of the narrow vein. The blasts of a ring consisting of single hole were conducted in the model by varying the width of the narrow vein. The damage contour under different parametric variations were analysed. The experimental trial has been also carried out at Zawar Group of Mine, Rajasthan, India. The optimum parameter was decided based on the result of experimental trial and numerical simulation model. The output of the model shows that optimum burden for 3.5 m narrow vein width is 1.12 m and for 1.0 m, it is 1.54 m. This shows that the optimised burden is higher in the vein having lesser width as compared to the greater width. The presence of joints/changed media/interface (between the sidewall and narrow vein) is the major reason behind this. The wave gets reflected back very fast on coming in contact with joints in a 1.0 m narrow vein as compared to a 4.0 m narrow vein. This will quickly convert the compressive wave into tensile wave giving rise to tensile slabbing. Hence proper utilisation of explosive energy will take place for the breakage of rock mass when the width of the narrow vein is smaller. The burden obtained from the experimental trial and numerical simulation models is less than 2.0 %. Hence the numerical simulation based approach can be used for the assessment of the optimum burden for ring blasting in narrow vein under different geomining conditions. This helped in reducing ore dilution and maximization of ore recovery. In the future, empirical relationships may be developed by considering different geological discontinuity, the strength of the rock mass and explosive parameters.

United Taconite is an iron ore mine operated by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (Cliffs) located near Eveleth, Minnesota. The mine, originally known as Eveleth Taconite Mines, was purchased in December 2003 by Cliffs (70%) and Laiwu Steel (30%). The mine site, known as the Thunderbird Mine, produces taconite ore for delivery by rail to the company’s Fairlane plant, located approximately 10 miles to the south near Forbes, Minnesota. At the plant, the crude ore is ground, concentrated and processed into pellets for steel industry customers. Total pellet production capacity is about 5.4 million long tons (Ltons) per year.

Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

The Nitrogen Dioxide Cloud: After one year of testing it can be stated that we do know and understand a great deal about why the nitrogen dioxide formation is exacerbated in cast blasting. Picture 1 is an example of how concentrated the NOx can be from a cast blast. It has long been felt that 300 or more milliseconds of timing needs to be put between each row of detonations to allow the rock a maximum time of flight so the cast percentage is high. Our experiments have found that higher cast percentages can make with timing between 150 to 200 milliseconds between rows. Picture 2 show a definite improvement in nitrogen dioxide concentration and most of that was the result of shooting a previously shot end of the cast pattern that had not been dug, thus no confinement of the powder columns.

The drilling and blasting process is the starting point of any aggregate or mining process. Many people refer to it as the “Primary Crusher” as it will always be more efficient to crush rock with explosives energy than it will be mechanical energy. It is the more efficient use of this energy that is addressed in this paper.

The Department of Defense Strategic Environmental Research & Development Program (SERDP) awarded funding for evaluation of procedures to mitigate peak pressures and energy flux density in the water column from ordnance being detonated on the ocean floor. The research purpose was to conduct scaled testing to resolve whether a theoretically-viable covering technology was operationally effective in reducing blast effects and the impacts of shrapnel. An additional objective was testing effectiveness of this method for hard-bottom units (rock or coral) and (unconsolidated) sediment substrate.

"This paper presents a critical review of the fragmentation data obtained from some large open pit copper and gold mines. Database ncludes 35 mines with Uniaxial Compressive Strength values ranging from 19 MPa to 227 MPa (2756 psi to 32923 psi). Variation in the fragmentation data and the causes are discussed in detail. Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) in drilling and blasting was shown to have significant impact on fragmentation. In addition, controllable blast design parameters including drill pattern, powder factor, blast timing, stemming length, etc as well as the large blast sizes havesignificant potential to improve fragmentation. Feed size requirements of crushing and grinding circuits were discussed in detail. The paper discusses the effects of different size fractions (top size, 80 %passing size and % passing 10 mm (0.5 in)) on the downstream processes and the role of the fragmentation model in the mine to mill process. Blast domains based on rock strength and structure canbe established by using a fragmentation model which is calibrated using measured fragmentation data. This allows the blast engineer to compensate for changing rock characteristics and stabilize the ROMfragmentation size and result in increased crusher and mill throughput. Two case studies were presented to demonstrate the benefits achieved in downstream processes. Main benefits were reduced downtime at crusher circuits, improved mill throughput as well as reduced total operating cost. A simple relationbetween uniaxial compressive strength and powder factor was proposed using the database for the optimized mines as a guideline to allow site engineers to compare their sites against the other sites."

The problem of predicting damage in densely developed areas due to incidental or malicious explosions is one of considerable importance to local, state, and federal governmental bodies. The difficulty of making such a prediction is confounded by the urban canyon phenomenon as the shock wave intensifies or rarefies depending upon the particular arrangement of buildings. The specific method detailed herein used a Computational Fluid Dynamics solver, ANSYS AUTODYN, to operate on Geographic Information Systems data, ArcGIS, which captured the geospatial relationship between the various buildings in downtown Oklahoma City, prior to the Murrah Building bombing. The model of Oklahoma City was first developed using the building footprints and elevations provided by the ArcGIS database. Due to the sheer size of the problem, the model was then subdivided into annular zones of increasing distance from the center of the blast. Each subsection was then solved using an Euler model in a cascading fashion with the output of the preceding model forming the input of the present model. To further reduce computational time, the size of the Euler nodes was increased at each stage as the section area increased. Due to the loss of precision in capturing peak pressure values when using larger size nodes, it was necessary to perform a transformation on the results using one dimensional wedge calculations with higher precision. The Murrah Building bombing event was an excellent case study due to its available ArcGIS data and the level of documentation of damage to surrounding structures due to the blast. The results from the staged CFD calculation were then used to develop a damage potential contour map. The documented incidents of damage in the area surrounding the Murrah building were then compared to the model generated damage potential contour map. Copyright ©

Westslope Cutthroat trout have declined in distribution and abundance across their range and currently occupy about 59% of their historic habitat. Due to hybridization with non-native species such as rainbow trout, genetically pure populations persist in only 10% of that range. A westslope cutthroat trout population with relatively high genetic purity (97%) and conservation importance persists in less than two linear stream miles in the headwaters of the South Fork Madison River in southwest Montana. The relative purity of this population has been maintained through the presence of a downstream intermittent reach. However, spring flows fill the intermittent reach, creating a connection between occupied westslope cutthroat trout habitat in the headwaters and the habitat of competing trout species downstream.

In-hole detonation pressure measurements are unusual in the production environment of a mining operation, partly owing to the hostile conditions to which recording equipment and pertinent probes must be subjected and, partly by the constraints of the production cycle. In recent decades, detonation pressure measurement techniques have been developed using low carbon resistors (LCR)-based gauges. They are cheap, relatively easy-to-operate, robust and with a high percentage of success in both open-pit and underground mining. Detonation pressure measurements are extremely important when carrying out numerical modelling to simulate explosive induced vibrations, since simulation results are highly dependent on the pressure-time history applied on the blasthole wall. Analytical equations have typically been used to model the pressure-time history; however, they usually do not adequately represent the behaviour of the explosive in terms of: peak pressure reached, rise time, mean frequency, decay and shape of the signal. Experimental records may be directly used instead of utilizing synthetic signals if they are available. In this work, (LCR)-based gauges are used to measure detonation pressure inside a production blasthole. The operation principle of the gauges utilized and the instrumentation layout is described in detail. A flexible resolution USB oscilloscope with high sampling rate has been used to catch the elusive pressure peak event. Measurements were carried out in production blasts fired with ANFO (0.86 g/cm3) in an underground mine––this also includes velocity of detonation (VOD) records––. A procedure based on the shock impedance matching has been developed to calculate the detonation pressure due to the characteristics of the gauges prevent its direct measurement. Detonation pressures obtained range from 1.71 to 2.97 GPa (248.01 to 430.76 ksi) which are in line with pressures calculated from the VOD records. Mean frequency and rise time analysis shows that 2 of 3 signals cannot be described using typical analytical equations.

This paper discusses the challenges encountered in drilling and blasting of a small diameter shaft underneath a parking garage in historic Gastown, Vancouver, BC. This project involved drilling in a restricted headroom area, blasting in a confined space environment, and excavating using a novel vacuum technique. The 1.2m x 1.2 m x 8.5m deep shaft was required for installation of a hydraulic piston for a show lift. The project called for very accurate drilling through inter-bedded sandstone and siltstone within the water table. Development of a unique blast design was required for blast vibration control on a historic structure located just 15.8 meters away. The shaft was successfully completed without damage to any of the surrounding structures.

Explosives have been used to demolish many unsafe structures around the world. However, it is unlikely any demolition job has ever involved destroying buildings already buried 40 feet (12 meters) into the world’s largest ice sheet. That is what happened to the original research station at the geographic South Pole, built back in the 1950s, following a series of discrete explosions between 2011 and 2013.

A highwall blast vibration project was carried out to quantify the level of blast vibrations produced from a trim blast in soft rock and a combined production and trim blast in hard rock. Combining production and trim blasts could be performed without exceeding the mine’s vibration limits.

Development of methods to calculate presplit blasthole pressures through simplified models, namely the Empirical Model and the Detonation Pressure Model. These models can be used with variations in explosive type and diameter, along with borehole diameter. All models have been validated with test data and shown to have minimal error.

The blasting industry is now well into its second decade of commercial use of electronic detonators. As an increasing number of blasters are introduced to the technology, the benefits are becoming more widely monitored and accepted in many surface blasting operations. However, their use in underground applications is not yet as widely established. This is primarily due to the distinct cost dynamics and processes associated with underground lasting.
