Over the past several years, the Hercules Technical Service Group for the Explosives Department has produced a series of programs for the TI59 programmable calculator dealing with explosive application problems. These programs have been made available to both our internal staff and to the Hercules explosives distributor organization. Several of these programs have found good acceptance and wide usage.

The Bureau of Mines has recently completed a contract study of the hazards associated with surface mining.! Part of this effort involved an analysis of surface mining accidents associated with blasting activities. For this purpose, 71 reports of accidents investigated by the Bureau of Mines or the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), covering the period from 1962 to 1976, were collected and analyzed. In addition, blasting accident frequencies for the period 1973-1976 were extracted from the central computer files maintained by the Health and Safety Analysis Center (HSAC) in Denver, Colorado. This paper presents a preview of the findings, which are treated in more detail in the final report.

SEE is a dynamic organization composed of people from all facets of the explosives industry who are truly interested in the advancement of that industry. I had been a miner at the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, SD for 12 years when I decided to obtain a mining engineering degree. The mental and economic consequences of that decision were more severe than we had imagined. The joint scholarship program of the Northern Plains and Black Hills Chapters of SEE provides assistance to several college students each year. I was fortunate enough to receive scholarships from this program twice and this assistance helped me and my family with both monetary and psychological support during times of need so that we could stay focused on the goal of obtaining a degree.

In construction and mining work, situations occasionally occur where hard rock or concrete must be excavated at locations near critical structures or utilities. Fearing damage from blasting, contractors and engineers often explore the viability of using mechanical methods or expansive concrete to facilitate the excavation work. However, for moderate to large excavations, the prolonged duration and high cost of using these methods is often impractical. In these situations, under the right conditions, controlled blasting and blast-management methods can be used to speed up the work and lessen costs. The process of determining whether or not blasting is practical is often complex, particularly when risks are high.

Construction of the $200 million Riverchase Galleria Mall in Hoover, Alabama was started in early 1984. The construction area consists of about 70 acres. The extensive building complex requires heavy concrete foundations which have to be poured during the early stages of construction and on a nearly daily situation so that contractual agreements can be met on a timely basis.

In the Kansas City metropolitan area, mineable Bethany Falls Limestone occurs 80 ft below river level under the 700 acre Park College Campus on the north bank of the Missouri River at Parkville. For 20 years prior to this project various firms passed over this opportunity to mine this property for construction aggregate because of uncertain costs, financial risk, and the difficulty of constructing an entry tunnel. This paper describes the drill and blast construction, rock bolting, and shotcrete lining of a 750 ft. long, 15% declining grade, truck tunnel through several Pennsylvanian limestones and shales.

The blast casting technique of removing overburden is an innovative technique which was successfully used in the mining of certain surface coal and quarries. This method was found to be efficient in minimizing the labor and equipment cost while accelerating mining operation with safety. During the past few years, high-speed cameras, laser surveying equipment and photogrammetry have become standard tools for recording blast geometry and results. While laser profiling yields accurate 3-D measurements, most cameras capture only two-dimensional images. Attempts to extract 3-D information from photographs have been unsatisfactory. Recent advances in electronic imaging and computer programming have made it possible to develop a 3-D computer based analysis system which can capture and measure 3-D images quickly and accurately. This paper describes the technology to create 3-D images and to analyze blast geometry before, during and after the blast.

An electronic delay detonator (EDD) consisting of a digital-base electronic delay module and a conventional instantaneous detonator module, designed for series connections with a special adjustable-output blasting machine, is described and shown to provide a delay time accuracy some four to twelve times higher than that of pyrotechnic millisecond and decisecond delay detonators, together with the other performance characteristics necessary for practical use. Also described is a blasting design system which allows effective reduction of ground and air vibration, through the use of EDDs with optimum delay times as determined by accurate computer simulation based on wave form and other data obtained from an on-site single-shot test blast.

Just one year ago at the 1986 Annual Meeting of the Society of Explosives Engineers, Dr. Calvin J. Konya presented a paper entitled "Presplitting Granite Using Pyrodex, A Propellant.'' Since that time more evidence has been developed to support the concept that "...gas energy can be the principal splitting force and that the stress wave or shock wave is not necessary to cause the presplitting action to occur." Work done in Vermont and Georgia is presented, and the ability to split granite without causing radial cracking of the bore holes is demonstrated.

A system for contour blasting with a linear shape charge principle has been studied /10/. In one operation the charge creates two notches along the bore hole wall and breaks the rock mass. The built in notching capability makes it possible to reduce the specific charge and the bore hole pressure to 1/3 of what is used in conventional contour blasting and to ensure that cracks are initiated and propagated only at the notches and nowhere else. The notching capability of linear shape charges has been studied experimentally and the bore hole pressure calculated to aid in optimization of a charge for future field experiments in bore holes with a diameter of about 50 mm.

The realignment of Highway H in the proximity of Crystal Cave (Springfield MO.) required the development of a blasting program that was both economical and efficient for construction, yet ecologically safe for the cave. Three component seismographs were strategically placed underground near prominent and sensitive cave features and the vibration levels from the construction blasting continuously monitored. Peak particle velocity (PPV) values were found to obey the square root scaling law and a peak particle velocity value of 0.3 in/sec was chosen as the safe maximum limit. This value proved adequate in preserving the integrity of the cave and its features. Scaled distances for the maximum and lower values enabled blasting personnel to select explosive charge weights per delay for given distance to the cave. Delays were determined from the dominant frequencies recorded underground.

Blasting techniques and protective measures exist that can mitigate risks associated with flyrock and the nuisance of vibration, and overpressure. However, these are often misused or not used because there are no prescriptive regulatory requirements and typically urban blasting guidelines do not exist. The relationship between the increasingly negative publicity that the urban blasting industry receives and the existing state of regulatory control on blasting in urban environments is presented.

Practical procedures that have been developed for pre-split blasting and smooth blasting in common rocks are reviewed systematically. Topics covered include shothole spacing, charge weight per unit length of shothole, decoupling ratio, adjustments for explosive type and rock type, and weight of explosive per unit face area. Relevant properties of frozen rocks, frozen soils, and ice are compared with those of common unfrozen rocks, and appropriate adjustment of blast design is discussed. Interim relationships for the design of controlled perimeter blasting in frozen soils and massive ice are put forward, recognizing that additional experimentation is required. Special problems in controlled blasting of ice are discussed. These include effects of wet holes, delayed removal of burden, and submerged burden. Special attention is given to the cutting of ice islands and icebergs. An Appendix describes an operation in which the face of an ice wharf at McMurdo Sound was trimmed by pre-split blasting.

Pumpable emulsion explosives have been available to surface and underground massive mining operations for decades and through their unique properties offer significant advantages through improved safety, reliability and performance. Despite their advantageous properties, the benefits of pumpable emulsions have been unavailable to narrow reef mining operations due to the void in technology necessary for their successful implementation within the challenging environment. Despite efforts to promote and enhance the safety and performance of bulk emulsions for narrow reef stoping, little research has been undertaken to advance the pump technologies required for their implementation. This has resulted in a gap in knowledge and technology and as a consequence the successful implementation of a pumpable emulsion system has consistently eluded the narrow reef environment.

The aim of this study was to understand clearly how VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives is influenced by parameters such as nitrate salt composition in the oxidizing phase, product density, blend composition, gassing rate, type of sensitization, etc. Also some VOD testing was performed on watergel-based gassed explosives in order to compare the results with those obtained for emulsions. VOD measurements were conducted in the surface blasting facility at the Research and Development laboratory of ENAEX SA (Calama, Chile). Despite the fact that the influences of some parameters on VOD of emulsion-based gassed explosives are easily predicted, there was found to be an unexpected correlation. Although it is commonly believed that the VOD of gassed explosives depends on the density, this study found that the VOD depends on the both size and the amount of gas bubbles incorporated into the product as well as type of sensitisation, regardless of whether the explosive was straight emulsion or a blend. Density is just a consequence of the incorporation of voids into the explosive. Future work in this area may examine variation of other parameters, in order to obtain a greater knowledge of detonation properties and therefore to design more efficient explosives.

Bardon Trimount Inc., a large producer of aggregate, crushed stone, and concrete, was experiencing significant public opposition to its five quarries in the Boston area. It was believed by the authors that this opposition could be significantly lessened if the total number of blasts per week were reduced. Although the blasting company at these quarries, Austin Powder Company, contended that this could easily and safely be accomplished by increasing the size of the blasts, regulations precluded this alternative by limiting the total amount of explosives that could be used per blast.

The increasing costs and problems associated with transporting and safely disposing of used engine oils from remote mine sites have caused mining companies to consider other ways to consume their used oil. One practical method of disposing of these used oils is to blend them with the diesel component of ANFO and Heavy ANFO type explosives.

Wadi Limestone Quarry is one of the largest captive mines of Associated Cement Companies Ltd, India. The mine management wanted to extend the excavation as close to the plant as possible for maximum exploitation of the deposit. The National Institute of Rock Mechanics and the management of Wadi Limestone Quarry carried out comprehensive investigations to evolve a methodology to control vibration and flyrock within safe limits.
